ONE WISH AT A TIME Aloha Kakou! This has been an extraordinary year of wishing with our keiki. We are so grateful for you - our local community - that has helped make these wishes possible. From islandwide treasure hunting to learning the cultural art of canoe building, wish kids across our state continued to dream big this year because of you, and lives were transformed. Although it is sometimes difficult to see the impact of a wish as it unfolds, from our wish alumni families joining us at Jingle Rock Run to our wish parents who have become wish granters, we continue to see how one wish not only lives on but continues to impact others. This is the heart of our mission - creating magical wish experiences one wish at a time. AL AN AND MARILEE MATTSON The wish child dreamt of being a princess for a day. Every detail was planned out and handled with such compassion and care. It was an honor to be present and see firsthand the excitement and joy this brought. There were no dry eyes that day. My wife Marilee and I have been involved and supported Make-A-Wish since 2005 when I became an active Board Member but we continue to support the organization throughout the year because we truly believe in this mission.
Everyone engaged with Make-A-Wish has their own personal story to tell or connection to the mission that speaks to them personally. The mission resonated with us so deeply that we made the decision to adopt Make-A-Wish as our own personal nonprofit. We are committed to engage in any manner that we can support through our businesses and personally. Having the power to make wishes come true well beyond our lifetime resonated with us. Knowing that we are able to balance our financial goals and create a legacy that will impact wish kids is important to us.

5 01 S T L E G I O N It may be one of the few times you hear of “bad guys doing good” but this legion of heroic volunteers continue to help us say YES! to wishes here in our community. From escorting a wish mom at our gala to battling visiting wish kids at the movie theater, the Pacific Outpost of the 501st Legion enjoy sharing their passion with our wish ohana.
We raised our light sabers high at this year’s gala in support of wish kids across our state, but the 501st Legion are our local warriors waving their light sabers for local kids all year long. In the last year alone they helped with three different wish experiences and our signature event. Mahalo to this amazing group of volunteers for their love of Star Wars and of course… our wish kids.
CARTER’S
ONE WISH Carter is the ultimate adventurer. His love of climbing, running and going fast led to his outdoor scavenger hunt exploration wish! Inspired by his love of and security in holding cans of Spam, Carter had the adventure of a lifetime riding ATVs, horses and a helicopter all while searching for his beloved Spam strewn across the beautiful North Shore of Oahu.

Carter’s mom was overwhelmed by his wish experience. She could not get over how happy and willing Carter was to try so many new things. Though he is non-verbal, you can always tell when Carter
is happy by his exuberant yell. To his family, his squeals of happiness bring a smile to their faces however in public they’re not always sure how that is received. It has unfortunately made Carter’s family wary of going out. His step-dad put it all into perspective telling their wish granters that they appreciated the opportunity to take Carter to places they would never have taken him before for fear of how he would react. The wish opened new doors for Carter and his family. Because of his amazing wish experience, Carter’s parents have even taken Carter back for therapeutic horseback riding lessons!

Dylan, 13 I wish to be a soldier

Wish Kid Dylan’s courage defies all illness. He has always dreamt of joining the U.S. Army, wanting nothing more than to be just like his uncle. However, due to his heart condition he is ineligible to join as an adult. When he was asked to wish big, he immediately answered, “I wish to be in the Army!” And that is exactly what Dylan got! On his wish day, Dylan was welcomed by his entire Army unit at the gate and presented with his own uniform and military orders. Knowing his limitations, he persevered through his training and was eventually promoted to Major. The comradery and support of his unit was the wish moment that Dylan had dreamt of. For all of the soldiers that participated that day, it was a heartwarming experience that also served as a reminder to them what an honor and privilege it is to serve in the Army. Lifelong friendships were formed during Dylan’s wish experience. Bonds were created that will carry Dylan and help strengthen him as he battles his medical condition.

AN INFINITE WISH… The Infinite Wish Award is Make-A-Wish America’s highest honor for one special wish that involves widespread and impactful community participation, generates collaboration, creating synergies to transform communities… 15-year old Kaimana from Waianae asked for a wish unlike any we’ve ever granted and the true definition of this award, which his wish won in October of 2016. Not only did his wish have the power to unite an entire community, becoming a canoe builder continues to bring meaning to Kaimana and evoke aloha every day. Through his personal bond with his Hawaiian ancestry and his desire to share his wish with his community, Kaimana’s wish continues to impact everyone each time he launches his canoe out of Nanakuli Harbor. His love of the ocean and connection to the aina continues to inspire us all.
