23 & 24 May 2018 The Old Truman Brewery, London The Only 100% British Sourcing Event

1

Welcome Welcome to Make it British Live! I can’t believe that we are on our fifth edition of this trade show, the only 100% British sourcing event dedicated to UK manufacturers and British-made brands. You will find many new and varied exhibitors at the show this year, displaying a diverse range of fashion, accessory and homeware products. Amongst those new for 2018 we have a blocked hat manufacturer, a yarn dyer, Britain’s only natural button makers, an holistic skincare brand and a saddlery company. But what never ceases to amaze me is the heritage behind some of the firms that exhibit here. Many of the companies are over 100 years old, with one even dating back to 1795. When you hear that there are century-old firms that have never exhibited at a trade show before you realise just how much the industry needed a platform like this to promote what they do. Whether a company is 100 years old or brand new, most of them are facing the same challenge at the moment finding skilled staff. A lack of young people coming into the industry effects everyone attending this show in some way, which is why I wanted to make sure that skills and training were high on the agenda this year. We’ve teamed up with the UKFT to dedicate Hall T4 to a manufacturing skills exhibition which highlights the work being done to support a new generation of talent. It includes a skills consultation area with UKFT’s skills and training specialists. Do make sure you visit it before you leave. I’m more enthusiastic than ever about UK manufacturing, and I hope that you share this enthusiasm and that this event inspires you to Make it British!

Symposium “It has been inspiring for me to see so many great British firms so keen to be involved with this year’s Make It British Live! Symposium. From textiles to footwear, from men’s shirts to maternity dresses, we have a huge variety of sectors covered to reflect the brilliant diversity of UK manufacturing. From finding investment to winning overseas customers, we will be exploring a number of key themes across our busy schedule, but underlying everything will be a celebration of the skills, craft and dedication of factories in all four countries of the United Kingdom. Perhaps the most important challenge we will be discussing is the pressing need to attract a young generation to see UK manufacturing as a viable, rewarding and attractive career. It’s going to be a fascinating two days and I am delighted to be chairman of the event.” Eric Musgrave Symposium Chairman @MusgraveEric

Eric Musgrave has been observing and commenting on the industry since 1980. Twice named business media editor of the year while in charge of Drapers, Eric’s journalistic career has given him an unrivalled overview of the textiles, clothing and footwear sector. His view on UK manufacturing is “use it or lose it”.
