Makena Ninete

Interior Design Portfolio

Hello!

My name is Makena Ninete and I am a fourth-year Interior Design student at the University of NebraskaLincoln.

I have wanted to be an Interior Designer since the third grade, when my notebooks were full of dream house floor plans. Through my education, my love for design has only grown. I am a lover of big ideas, and out-of-the-box solutions. I am constantly creating, whether it’s schoolwork, crochet, drawing, or anything else I can get my hands on. That being said, I thrive in collaborative, hands-on environments.

As I move into the Interior Design industry, I look forward to starting a career where I can create spaces that both innovate and inspire.

01. Indian Cave

The intent of this project is to create an adaptable space that shares the natural and cultural history of Indian Cave State park with its visitors through a minimalistic, sustainable form. Our group was able to work with Nebraska Game and Parks over the course of the semester to deliver the best solution for the Indian Cave team.

A feeling of transparency was implemented through building voids and materiality. As a user approaches the building they can see right through to the exterior view. From the back looking forward, a felt mural inspired by the shadows cast by native trees greets the user and creates a heightened sense of immersion.

02. Walt Disney Animation

spring 2022 | 6 weeks

The intent of this project is to create a space for Walt Disney Animation that fosters collaboration and encourages adaptability. Theming each team to an important time period in the company’s history, users will work in a space that reminds them of where they came from and encourages them to push forward into the future.

To give the teams a sense of community, each one was assigned a color, a motif, and an notable era within the company’s history. The colors and the motifs help distinguish each space. Along with fostering community, this also aids way finding for visitors and employees alike.

The furniture selection focused on adaptable pieces that could serve multiple functions throughout the day. This further strengthens the flexibility of the plan as company culture shifts and changes.

03. Roots

The intent of this project is to create a space for a community to learn and grow together through food gardening and education. The space will foster curiosity, community, and creativity for those in under served communities and without equitable food access. To accomplish this, the space will push the boundaries between indoor and outdoor spaces and give every space equal importance. This will break the barrier between the community and nature, as well as show the beauty and importance of diversity.

04. HomeWORK

spring 2022 | 3 weeks

HomeWORK is a home office for a working parent with 2 high school/college aged kids who shares a home office with their partner. Their working schedule is unpredictable, so flexibility is key. Their office will provide a comforting and professional retreat, useful for both work and decompression. The kids will get their own space for lounging, and a workspace that is adaptable for use beyond their school years.

When the kids aren’t online for classes, the workspace quickly and easily transforms back into a living room. This adaptability will be useful with older kids and is sustainable for the longterm. As they move out, the director and her partner will still have a functional space to enjoy without need for further renovation.

Living/Kids Workspace

With functionality and craftsmanship being strong themes for this project, I felt creating a physical model and exploring the space in that way better helped me to interpret the space. It also allowed for some experimentation with rendering style.

06. Ruby June

I picked up crochet at the end of 2020 and by the end of 2021 had made more things than I could ever use. I registered Ruby June as a small business and set off to sell at my first vendor market, Junkstock. Ruby June has been a great process of creating, taking critique, and adapting. I have learned how to sell myself and manage money, inventory, and more. I also get to share everything I work on when I’m not designing for class including crochet, punch needle, and block printed work. I look forward to continuing this journey of learning and growing.
