PROFILE I’m an ambitious young woman ready for the next chapter in her life. I enjoy exploring farmers markets or new hiking trails with my loved ones. Traveling to new places is something I hope to do more of in the future. Learning about how other people live and how their culture thrives is extremely rewarding to me.

OBJECTIVE I’m looking for a full time design position with a local studio. I recently moved from Ohio to Arizona specifically to find work. I find my design process and style to align with how many firms in the area operate. I am seeking a design firm with a strong company culture and values. Being able to collaborate with my colleagues is important to me and something I’m looking forward to.

WORK CAFE

SHOES OFF CO-WORKING OFFICE 15 WEEK DESIGN PERIOD 11,000 SQFT My senior thesis project was focused on the urban revitalization of Youngstown, OH. Urban revitalization is an initiative aimed at restoring vitality and giving new life into existing urban neighborhoods in decline due to social, economic and environmental reasons. Shoes off Co-Working is an office environment for start up businesses and entrepreneurs, small established businesses and free lancers. Making a space like this available will bring jobs to the area and help form a more tight knit community.

The concept and driving factor behind my design is “shoes off ”. When I began brainstorming how I wanted my space to feel and be perceived, I imagined it user friendly, very homey, and over all, a space that occupants would feel comfortable spending a lot of their time in. The space I tend to have these experiences in is my home. Whenever I go to visit my parents for the weekend or drop in for a quick visit, my mother always says “Kick your shoes off and stay awhile”, and thus my concept was born.

In addition to my design concept, I implemented a design theory to help guide my process. The 5 work modes (Focus, Collaborate, Learn, Socialize, and Rejuvenate) create zones in my design for specific uses. The work modes are implemented to help create a functional space that is well suited to all user needs.

ALLEVIATE CENTER BASIC NEEDS HOMELESS SHELTER 3 WEEK DESIGN PERIOD 5,000 SQFT Alleviate Center is a basic needs center for the homeless with a focus on personal hygiene. The center is designed to reduce pressure from the outside world. It minimizes the users’ stress and pain by giving them a space to cleanse and rejuvenate. The center is open 24/7 to give people in the community a constant opportunity to take advantage of the amenities available to them. It is a relaxing and uplifting space that enables the users to be themselves. It allows them to associate with others who may be going through the same hardships as them. The calming aesthetic and general space plan will allow users to feel comfortable and safe, thus generating the release of pressure.

The name of the center is derived from the design concept, alleviate, meaning to make pain, or a problem less severe. People who experience homelessness are in a constant state of mental and emotional pressure. The center is designed to alleviate that pressure from the inside out. This can be seen in my floor plan. The administration area acts as the main pressure point(where they begin). As they experience the space, pressure is alleviated.

04

NEEDS The users spend their days living outside tside with no necessig of safety and privacy ties. This space gives them the feeling they are constantly looking for. It gives them a place to shows, and have down time er, do laundry, communicate with others, indoors for a while before going back out into the elements.

PRIVACY User privacy was a difficult challenge to o resolve because of the need for sight lines and safety concerns. ns. To resolve this issue, I implemented partition walls to give the illusion of space separation. Seating with separators give people e privacy as well, while still allowing them to be involved in the community around them.

EGRESS & WAY

FINDING NDING

Curved walls and furniture positioning informs the users’ way around the space. Due to this placement, a clear path of circulation on can be seen from the plan view. The penetration tration of daylight through h the north and south walls can be used as a beacon to navigate. e.

SAFETY Safety was a big concern during the design process. In order er to accommodate this key feature, the administration/staff dministration/staff area areas eas s were positioned in the middle of the floor or plan. All the adminis adminisistration areas connect for easy access. Large picturesque win winin-dows line the staff area walls so sight lines can be maintaine maintained ned d at all times. Staff can access all sides es of the building swift swiftft-ly and easily because of their position in the building. Tension on e rest of the space be beand pressure are alleviated through the cause of this centralized area. It’s ideal for all parties involve involved. ved. d.

TRAINING ROOM SECTION

The floor plan is designed to help customers as well as the workers find their way around the space easily. The maple hardwood creates a clear path of circulation from the Cafe entrance to the back of house where the training and counseling rooms are. The carpet tiles indicate static movement, idea for sitting and enjoying a cup of coffee in the cafe or calming down in the sensory room after too much stimulation. The cafe and back of house are separated by a door, so customers know not to continue on the circulation path. A sensory room is conveniently located in both areas of the building, 5 6 the cafe and the training center, for easy access during a sensory overload fit. The space was designed with the users needs in mind.

One of the requirements the YWCA asked of us when designing was to create a space that was multi purpose. To achieve this, I added a stage in the bar area for local performers to showcase their artistry. The fissure in the second floor allows the sound to flow into the upstairs space, connecting the two floors. The split in the floor was inspired by the fissures of kinsugi mended pots and vases, thus tying back into my concept.

SECOND FLOOR

To further enhance the use of the food hall, the bar area and the second floor will be open from lunch to late evening. The other side of the lower floor, will be open from breakfast to lunch, closing for the dinner rush. This gives the space the opportunity to be rented out for private parties. This can include a work party, cooking classes, vendor shows, etc. A flexible space like this can be very useful in bringing the community together.
