Hillyard’s Ekklesia Church of God Churches throughout the Inland Empire share their resources and personal support to meet needs in their community and beyond. One of these churches is the Ekklesia Church of God in the Hillyard area of Spokane. When resources are available, the members of the church help people with food or clothing. The church provides marriage counseling and officiates at weddings. They have an outreach with “Heaven’s Children grief counseling especially for families who have lost infants, toddlers and children. Occasionally funds are provided for gas or food. Through the year the church gathers toys, games, books and other Whoever shall call on the name of the

things of good useable quality for both small children and youth. When enough donations are collected an event is held for low-income families to select toys/books etc. for $1-5 to fill a bag. They also collect gently used clothing and charge $3 per bag. In addition to helping the community, the funds raised help cover the church expenses, youth group and rental of the building they use. Ekklesia Church of God was established in 2006. Anton J. Donier is an ordained Pastor. The name Ekklesia is Greek and means “called out of this world. It is a Freewill Church of New Covenant Saints. The church is small with 22-24 attendees including men, women Through the grace of the

The members open at noon to set up with worship services at 1 p.m. Saturday afternoons. The service includes prayer and praise, announcements, and the main message. Children sit quietly with parents playing quietly or napping in church. Everyone is asked to bring pen/pencil/paper and a Bible, or a Bible will be provided. After worship is a fellowship time with kosher snacks or a potluck. No pork/shellfish or other “unclean meats as described in the Old Testament of the Bible are served. Children

are encouraged to sing and to help serve in special areas. Men and women are encouraged to serve and at times speak as the spirit moves them. Everyone is encouraged to use their God-given talents and gifts. The church is in the process of attracting new members, especially youth. Members of the church teach using the King James, the New King James and The Contemporary English Bible. One or two other versions are used occasionally for clarification. The church is planning to hold Spokespersons meeting once a month where men, women and youth learn to speak well and to address public audiences. Specials such as singing,

The church holds numerous celebrations throughout the year even though they do not observe Christmas, Halloween, Valentine’s Day, or Easter. They do observe birthdays, national holidays, and anniversaries. They observe the Lord’s Supper in the spring with a special dinner followed by the symbolic foot washing and taking of the broken bread and fruit of the vine. People are baptized when they are sure they are ready and understand the meaning of baptism. In June or July is a “Blessing of the Little Children with children’s day. An Hallelujah party this year will be held Oct. 30, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Eight

days each fall the church celebrates “The Feast of Tabernacles depicting the millennial rule of Christ and his coming Kingdom. September 22, there will be a silent auction and regular auction at 2524 E. Queen Ave. 6-9 p.m. In November an Arts and Craft Bazaar and Bake Sale is planned. Vendors will pay half in advance for a table or space. In the December or January months a “Winter Fest party with games, maybe small gifts, or a movie or a dance is held. Stevens County Fire District 12 Marine Safety Program The Inland Northwest just got safer!

S

tevens county emergency response volunteers and fi refighters have worked for years to develop a marine fi re and rescue program that can respond to the unexpected water emergency. The entire western border of our county is waterfront, containing miles of hard to reach, remote access along Lake Roosevelt National Recreation Areas shoreline, and extending into the Columbia and Kettle rivers in the northern part of the county. The diverse outdoor recreation available along our waterfront attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors to vacation and visit during the summer months. These guests bring economic prosperity to the area, but also this rise in population brings the potential for a proportional increase in the amount of unfamiliar emergency, or water rescue situations. Washington state has experienced more fi res in the last few years, motivating and reminding us to be prepared for the unexpected emergency. The District 12 volunteers have worked for over 10 years to produce a marine fi re rescue boat to assist and access the Stevens County western border. The retired 24-foot Coast Guard “Sea Arc was purchased from federal surplus equipment lists and then transported from Sitka, Alaska to Seattle by ferry. District 12 volunteers picked up the boat from the Seattle ferry terminal and delivered it to its new home at the Rice fi re department. The local fi refighters have worked for hundreds of hours to repair the boat and trailer. This time was also used to improve training opportunities for our volunteers, prepare SOP’s for the county EMS, and develop a program to work with cooperating agencies. After almost a year of preparation the District 12 fi re boat is available now for limited response to a variety of fi re and water/ rescue emergencies by just calling 911. Capabilities will include: fi refighting on shore and on water water rescue and emergency response Transfer of fi re fighters, and medical response teams Fill fi re trucks and drop tanks from lake Hazmat and/or chemical spill support Law enforcement support Border Patrol Support Support Public Ferry at Gifford, which crosses Lake Roosevelt 60 times a day for 51 weeks a year

Support Colville and Spokane Reservations United States Coast Guard Department of Natural Resources FEMA and Homeland Security Support National Park Service Support U.S. Forest Service3 Sheriff and tri-county dive teams Support county and state wide EMS The waters of northeast Washington bring together, and join many diverse cultures and communities. The fi re / rescue boat may serve this multitude of agencies and work across many jurisdictions. Over the next few years we will continue to modify the boat with specialized equipment and new technologies that will assure an effective and capable addition to our fi re preparation. We will continue to develop a comprehensive marine safety program that includes all cooperating agencies. We will continue to provide new training opportunities, and practice to improve the skills and capabilities of our volunteers. This will assure that we effectively meet the needs of 421' $118$/ our communities and partst ners in marine safety for many years to come. arming was not the plan when Pete and Joan Thompson moved their family of eight to Chewelah in 2008. Falling in love with the beauty of the country and charm of the town, they sought a slower lifestyle with enough space to plant a garden and raise a few animals for their own meats and eggs. That changed the day Joan spotted “Salad Bar Beef” by Joel Salatin on the library shelf. It was the first step in discovering new possibilities in raising quality, healthful meats and eggs and nurturing the land itself with minimal artificial inputs. Figuring God’s design is best, they decided to try to provide as natural environment and food for the animals as possible. And, thus, Burnt Valley Farm, was born. As described in his book, farmers like Joel Salatin use a model built upon the principle of literally building a farm from the ground up. Salatin asserts that healthy soil is the foundation of healthy food. The method is based on creating productive pastures through careful management and intensive, rotational grazing of cattle followed by egg-laying hens and meat chickens. This way a farmer is simultaneously nourishing the soil and producing healthy meat. The farming is done without conventional practices like annual plowing, disking, or using chemical fertilizers. This philosophy is partly what attracted the Thompsons to pursuing this lifestyle. Pete works as construction project manager in Spokane, but loves to farm: the land, the space, the animals, the creative problem solving. The family owns 22 acres and leases extra pasture from neighbors. In addition to Pete and Joan, four of the Thompson’s six children live and work on the farm. Becca, 17, is responsible for the egg operation. She cares for the 200 plus Red Star layers who provide the eggs for Burnt Valley Farm customers. From spring through fall the chickens free-range on open pasture. Let out during the day, they enjoy the grass, sunshine and bugs, but they are also doing their part in replenishing the pas-

ture. By scratching in the cow-pies, they distribute the manure, which fertilizes the grass (along with their own direct nitrogen contribution). At nightfall, they instinctively come home to the “egg-mobiles”, which are chicken coops on wheels. These chicken homes contain roosts, nesting boxes, and the water and feed supply. The floor is slatted so that chicken droppings end up on the ground below. The meat chickens live their lives in “chicken tractors”, protective cages that Robbie, 15, moves across the pasture. These tractors have no floors which allows the birds access to fresh grass and lets them to do their part in pasture fertilization! For butchering, the CADC Community Agriculture Development Center (CADC) has designed and built a mobile processing unit to bring a chicken from the pasture to the freezer. Burnt Valley Farms processed about 600 meat chickens this year. Noah, 19, takes care of the 20 cows and the 5 pigs. He is finishing up his AA and also works at Zips. Isaac is 21, keeps everything mechanical maintained, works several jobs and is learning the welding trade. Two daughters do not work on the farm. Susanna, 24, is an EMT and ER tech and is taking college classes. Isabel, 23, lives in Spokane with her husband, Zach, and son, Liam. She has one more year at EWU and is passionate about health and fitness and helping others feel their best. In addition to the grass and bugs all the chickens and pigs at Burnt Valley Farm eat a custom feed the contains no soy, corn, hormones, antibiotics or GMO’s. The beef is 100 grass-fed and finished. Joan had a cancer scare in 2007 and became an avid researcher about health and diet. A product of that research is the whey protein they have added to their business. The whey protein shakes from grass-fed cows have helped Joan lose weight

and Pete maintain energy for his work in construction and on the farm. Since 2012, Joan has brought Burnt Valley Farm meats and eggs to the Chewelah Farmers Market, held every Friday at the Chewelah Park, mid-May to mid-October. Check chewelahfarmersmarket.com for the latest events and vendors. Burnt Valley Farm eggs are also available at Meyers Falls Market in Kettle Falls, Front Porch Farm store in Arden, The Bread Box Market and Bakery in Chewelah and at the Front Porch Farm stand at Spokane’s Fairwood Farmers Market. Recommended books which most influenced the Thompsons are “Nourishing Traditions” by Sally Fallon and “Salad Bar Beef” and “Pastured Poultry Profits” by Joel Salatin.

airwood Farmers’ Market is a newer market in North Spokane which offers an intimate neighborhood setting within the Fairwood community north of Whitworth University. A vision of Rob Allen and refined with other community partners, the mission of the market is to revitalize and complete the Fairwood District in North Spokane, with new shops, mixed use residential and commercial development, a sustainable farmers market, and bicycle friendly trails-making it a connected, pedestrian friendly community. Rob and his committee work together to provide small local farm producers and crafters from places like Green Bluff, Deer Park and Chewelah the opportunity to sell their products. This affiliation is vital for these smaller businesses all while providing a neighborhood connectedness to nearby residents of all ages. This market is growing with 33 vendors. “We hope to increase the size of the market to at least 50 vendors”, states Rob Allen. Artisan Foods include delicious breads, cinnamon rolls, flavor infused butters, premium cow’s milk and goat cheeses, locally made seasons, cooking oils, fresh fruit pies, authentic Italian pasta sauces. Farm produce varies with Greenbluff berries and beers, fresh eggs and naturally raised beef, fresh seasonal fruits. Arts and Craft booths display Pendleton wool products, hand crocheted tops and accessories, locally crafted woodwork, chair massages, and quality candles. It all sounds wonderful and patrons return each Tuesday afternoon to see and experience new vendor participation.

Lincoln County Sheriff Wade Magers on the Hart Road Fire

I

wanted to personally thank everyone who worked so hard this past week on our local Hart Road Fire. This was the worst single fire event I have personally been associated with from the standpoint of property and residential loss in over 27 years of public safety that I can remember. Of course those of you that lost property, structures and houses sacrificed the most by far. It is truly a blessing that no injuries or deaths occurred involving our residents, home owners, volunteers, public safety personnel and fire fighters during an event of this size. During this tragic fire event I observed a lot of significant effort and true caring heroism by so many. Our local volunteer Fire District 5 personnel did an “OUTSTANDING” job, as did the rest of Lincoln County Fire Districts. Resources from every single district responded to assist with this fire. I cannot commend you enough for your hard work,

sacrifice and dedication during this fire storm. I would also like to recognize our local businesses that stepped up to assist behind the scenes with water trucks, supplies, and those who brought dozers and heavy equipment to aid those in the trenches. The outside emergency fire personnel who responded from throughout the region and beyond were a pleasure to work with and Incident Management Team 7 was very professional and effective. The air support group was very impressive in their attacks on the fire line. Thanks to the Davenport school personnel, D.N.R. representatives, N.P.S personnel, Red Cross, Lincoln County fairgrounds crew, and all those who helped with food and donations to assist those in need. This reflects what a terrific team we have locally and beyond and is a true testament to life in a small community, where every-

one steps up when called upon! There are far too many people to list individually, however please know it did not go unnoticed especially by those in need. Lastly I would like to recognize our “Dispatch and Road Deputy Team.” I greatly appreciate you being true professionals and dedicated to public safety. The dispatch team fielded hundreds of phone calls on both business lines and 911 lines. They handled radio traffic 24/7 for much of this event while logging, organizing, dispatching and managing many of the needed resources. The road deputies provided evacuation notices, traffic control and jumped right into the safety and security aspects of their duties. It is always a pleasure to work with the men and women who are on the front lines of these types of large scale events and watch them do their jobs and do them well. Good Job Team!

FRESH CHUCKLEBERRIES! Warning! Not to be taken internally, literally, or seriously!

“ is the shLaughter betwee ortest distance n tw ~ Victor o people.” Borge

“You don’t stop laughing because you grow old, you grow old because you stop laughing.” -- Anonymous I show up at the beginning of each school year with a full pencil box and an empty head.

Kate: Why? Nate: Because there was no history to study!

I love school supplies. If only there were some other place we could use them besides school.

Joe: What’s the king of all school supplies? Moe: I don’t know. What? Joe: The ruler.

I have never let my schooling interfere with my education. - Mark Twain My school days were the happiest days of my life; which should give you some indication of the misery I’ve endured over the past twenty-five years. - Paul Merton I took a test in Existentialism. I left all the answers blank and got 100. - Woody Allen My school was so tough the school newspaper had an obituary section. - Norm Crosby Q: What did the buffalo say to his son when he left for college? A: Bison. Nate: Why was school easier for cave people?

Teacher: Daniel, I’ve had to send you to the principal every day this week. What do you have to say for yourself? Daniel: I’m glad it’s Friday! Phil: What makes a Cyclops such an effective teacher? Cheryl: I don’t know. Phil: He has only one pupil.

In elementary school, in case of fire you have to line up quietly in a single file line from the smallest to the tallest. What is the logic? Do tall people burn slower? - Warren Hutcherson Mother: How did you find school today ? Daughter: I just got off the bus and there it was! Mother: What did you write? Son: I don’t know. They haven’t taught us how to read yet! Teacher: What’s big and yellow and comes in the morning to brighten a mother’s day ? Pupil: The school bus!

Teacher: Why did you eat your homework, Joe? Joe: Because I don’t have a dog.

How do bees get to school ? By school buzz!

Knock Knock! Who’s There? A Broke Pencil A Broken Pencil who?! Nevermind! It’s pointless…

What do little astronauts get when they do their homework? Gold stars.

Why did the little vampires stay up all night? They were studying for a blood test. WATSON: What school did you go to, Holmes? SHERLOCK: Elementary, my dear Watson! It was the first day of school. As the principal made his rounds, he heard a terrible commotion coming from one of the classrooms. He rushed in and spotted one boy, taller than the others, who seemed to be making the most noise. He seized the lad, dragged him into the hall, and told him to wait there until he was excused. Returning to the classroom, the principal restored order and lectured the class for half an hour about the importance of good behavior. “Now,” he said, “are there any questions?” One girl stood up timidly. “Please, sir,” she asked,

I’m not going to buy my kids an encyclopaedia. Let them walk to school like I did. - Yogi Berra

“may we have our teacher back?” Mrs. Jones brought her son Elmer to register at school. However, Elmer was only five, and the required age was six. “I think,” said Mrs. Jones to the principal, “that he can pass the six year old test.” “We’ll see,” replied the principal. “Elmer, say the first thing that comes to your mind.” “Do you want logically connected sentences,” said Elmer, “or purely irrelevant words?” The first day of school is always special to me. It’s the only day of the year when I’m not behind in my homework. The first day of school wouldn’t be so bad if it weren’t followed by the second day of school, and the third day of school, and then the fourth day of school . . .

Teachers always seem

Show me a kid who likes the first day at school and I’ll show you a kid who likes to get his lip caught under a manhole cover. There’s one good thing about the first day of school. When it’s over; you’re one day closer to the last day of school. Some kids enjoy buying school supplies. To me, it’s like buying your own dental instruments. One of my classmates gets carried away. He shows up for the first day of school each year with a smiling face and three pack mules of school supplies. If there were no schools to take the children away from home part of the time, the insane asylums would be filled with mothers. - Edgar W. Howe MOTHER: What’s wrong with the new clothes I bought you? They’re indestructible. SON: So is a Sherman tank, Mom, but I wouldn’t wear it to school.

The Easy Way to Tasty Dinners

2 6 3 4

At Burnt Valley Farm (aka the Thompson family) we enjoy:

Sometime in the morning, pull whole chicken (or roast beef or pork) from the freezer (as in frozen, not thawed!). Turn oven on to 275 degrees. Put chicken/roast in roasting pan with your choice of onions, garlic, spices. We love fresh rosemary on chicken. Pour water over roast…about 2-3 inches deep in pan. Cover. Pop pan in the oven and know that dinner is on the way! All afternoon, enjoy the wonderful, cozy aromas filling your kitchen. Approximately 8 hours later, take from oven. (Time is flexible, but be careful to not go too long. No dry chicken!) Enjoy your dinner! SAVE the broth, bones and meat tidbits. I like to simmer on low overnight. Adding ½ cup of vinegar will help draw nutritious minerals from the bones into the broth.

Next day:

HUCKLEBERRY COUNTRY SUDOKU! 2 1

recipe to cook a tasty free ranged chicken from Burnt Valley or any local farm. We hope you enjoy the wonderful “real chicken” flavor and the knowledge that it is so good for you. Keep in mind that pastured chicken has less fat than store-bought, so be careful to not overcook. A meat thermometer might be helpful.

Strain out the bones and skin. Pick out the meat. Admire your beautiful, HEALTHFUL broth. Add meat, veggies, herbs and spices. Simmer for an hour or two…or all day. Enjoy and let your body feel the goodness!

Long, slow cooking pulls out nutrients from the meat, bones and cartilage. When you use pastured or 100% grass-fed meats, you know you’re getting maximum nutrients and no toxins. For instructions on making chicken stock, see the Burnt Valley Farm Facebook page or e-mail Joan at info@burntvalleyfarm.com.
