By Jeff Mann It hasn’t even opened yet, but Greenpoint Avenue’s Búðin (pronounced booth-in) is already struggling with its identity. Coffee Shop? Bar? Boutique? Any and all fit this Nordic-themed space with its well-planned coffee, beer and spirits programs, chosen to be enjoyed while searching through a selection of carefully-curated Nordicdesigned products. “We’re trying to bring an authentic experience to Greenpoint,” explained co-owner Crystal Pei. “We have a lot of Scandinavian and Nordic friends living here.” (Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Iceland, Finland, Greenland and the Faroe Islands make up the Nordic countries, only Denmark, Sweden and Norway make up Scandinavia, in case you were wondering). Pei fell in love with the region while working there on a film project. The design plans (the anticipated completion date is mid-December) call for an environment representative of the Nordic regions, with simple intricate designs and a clean cozy feel. Unlike many of its North Brooklyn peers, the Búðin plan, designed by Kevin Oliver, is neither minimalistic nor crammed vintage looking. It’s also not meant to be a workspace with people spending the day, eyes glued to their laptops. “It’s a place for people to have conversations or interact with us so we can explain our products,” said Pei. Then there’s the coffee menu. Curated by Pei’s See Budin Coming to Greenpoint Page 4

A Tale of Giving Thanks in Greenpoint How A Band of Locals Lovingly Prepares A Feast for 700 Needy and Homeless By John J. Ricco It was the Tuesday before Thanksgiving 2011. The Greenpoint Lions Club was holding its bi-weekly meeting at the 3 Decker diner on Manhattan Avenue. I was being installed as a new member of the club along with their new chaplain, Father John Merz, the newly minted Minister at the Church of the Ascension, one of Greenpoint’s oldest and most respected churches. As the meeting progressed, Father John announced, “I’ve got a problem.” I was eager to show what being a Lion was about and to honor my deeply ingrained Catholic upbringing, so without hesitation, I asked “What’s wrong Father J?” He explained that he had more than 20 turkeys to serve the homeless for Thanksgiving, but nowhere to cook them. Of course, my reply was, “problem solved!” Little did I know what I had gotten myself into. I told Father John that at my restaurant, Grandma Rose’s, I have a huge pizza oven which I was sure could handle the volume. “Great!” he said, just before expressing his wish to make a few side dishes as well. “Sure no problem padre,” I replied, convinced I could feed over 300 people with the ease of making a TV dinner. Boy did I learn a lesson that year! Not being satisfied with feeding only 300 people I decided to reach out to the local Veterans post. My cousin Steve Cirone is active there and I asked him to contact the Veterans shelter in Long Island City to see if we could provide them with Thanksgiving dinner. So Steve calls the woman in charge there, who responded “Wow that’s great! We’d love you to do that for us…Oh and by the way, we have about 300 guys here on any given day.” When Steve called me back, he excitedly explained to me how grateful they were and I was thrilled! I figured how many guys could there be, 60? 80? I almost fell over when Steve responded, “About 300,” and I realized I had just doubled down on Father John’s commitment. As my panic eased, I called Father John to share the good
The real Grandma Rose and John Ricco
news. Needless to say he almost fainted too! I think he might have even hyperventilated some and then he said to me, ARE YOU NUTS??? I replied simply with a yes and we both knew we were in for quite a ride. Thankfully, the neighborhood has people like Pastor Ann Kansfield from the Greenpoint Reform Church, a wonderfully powerful force in our community feeding the needy year round. I had met her that year, and she was instrumental in helping us obtain some of the necessary supplies we needed to complete this now massive undertaking. Even with Pastor Ann’s help we were still well short of what we needed to accomplish our mission. Enter Neil Sheehan, who has dedicated his life to helping those fighting the battle of recovery. Armed with my two angels, Pastor Ann and Neil, we ended up bringing in a combined 55 turkeys. The Lion’s Club foot the bill for supplies, so once we had all the raw materials we got to work. Our grocery list read like this; 55 birds, 18 hams, 400 pounds white potato, 300 pounds yams, 2 pallets of white bread, 5 cases of eggs, 2 cases of butter, 5 cases of chicken stock, 400 pounds of onions,
200 pounds of carrots, 200 pounds of celery, 2 cases of mozzarella cheese, 2 cases of marshmallows and 6 cases of fresh cranberries. The next problem: how to break it all down and get it cooked. The people of Greenpoint answered Father John’s and my call en masse! I felt like George Bailey at the end of “It’s a Wonderful Life,” with people calling me and rushing in to volunteer and make this a reality. We had at least 25 people at Grandma Rose’s chopping, slicing, cutting and prepping all night. At least 50 more were at the Church of the Ascension doing the same. Even my pickle vendor, Brooklyn’s Ba-Tampte Pickles (America’s BEST PICKLES EVER!!) came to my aid with 50 food grade buckets and water tight lids which made prepping and storage and delivery of the massive amounts of food possible. (Side note: I had been introduced to a young woman named Cindy the month before, who joined the volunteers at Grandma Rose’s. She stuck around all night, helping to finish the work just in time for the Thanksgiving morning pickup. I never thought I would see her again after she witnessed the lunacy at Grndma Rose’s, but
we ended up falling in love and were married this October 12th.) When I look back to that day in the 3 decker, having an opportunity to forge a great friendship with a man like Father John, and subsequently Pastor Ann and Neil, as well as
all the amazing volunteers that answered the call of service, I can only say that God is alive and well in Greenpoint. To the people of Greenpoint and Williamsburg: the Grandma Rose’s family wishes you a happy, healthy and blessed Thanksgiving!

PS 196/M582 Bask In Co-Lo Victory Continued from Page 1 (DOE) to co-locate a second middle school within the building already housing PS 196 and MS 582. Last month, hundreds of students, their parents, teachers and supporters assembled on Bushwick Avenue to voice their resistance to the co-location, and then attended a public hearing on the proposal. But the gathering in the auditorium wasn’t another protest rally; it was a victory celebration. On October 30th, the DOE announced the cancellation of the co-location, much to the pleasure of the schools and their allies. Many of the community leaders and elected officials who spoke on Friday credited the parents as the main factor in overturning the proposal, pointing specifically to the huge turn-out during the street rally. “It gave us so much energy,” said PS 196 Principal Janine Colon, who has helped guide the elementary school to an A rating for the past 10 years. “You were the biggest voice out there.” Rob Burstein, an ESL teacher who has worked at PS 196 for over 20 years, singled out the efforts of parents Jessica Rosa (who also serves as PTA President), Maria Brunson, Yaritza Saucedo and Evelyn Rivera. “Not only did they call and email, they came up with amazing ideas,” said Burnstein. “They visited around 100 local businesses, and got them to sign a petition.” Other speakers at the event included District 14 Community Education Council President Tesa Wilson, 1 st Vice President Mario Aguila and Member Elaine Manatu,

Reyna, who originally called for a meeting between PS 196 supporters and the DOE, was serenaded with an impromptu “Happy Birthday” upon reading the podium. Blushing, she thanked the parents and school leadership, and proposed that their latest success be the first on a checklist of future achievements. “We need a STEM program

to create the future engineers of this district,” urged Reyna. “The school also has a piece of underdeveloped land, and there’s no reason not to create a full green roof farm.” Reyna also advised the PS 196 community to continue working closely with the CEC and elected officials, including their former
chief of staff and Assemblymanelect Antonio Reynoso and Mayor-elect Bill de Blasio. Interspersed throughout the speeches were rousing performances and poetry readings by PS 196 students grades 2 -5. Those who sang were Gabriel Gomez, Jayda Hakeem Ali, Steven Heredia, Tyrese Lucas,
Huascar Pabon, Natalie Ramos, Cindy Reynoso, Kasandra Santos, Edward Vasquez, Monique Woods, and Skarlett Marin. Those who read poems were Bianca Baez, Joel Corona, Karen Pastor and Isaac Perez. PHOTO Michael Cesarczyk

Búðin Coming to Greenpoint Avenue This Christmas Continued from Page 1 partner Elliot Rayman, Búðin will offer a rotating assortment of the best of the Nordic region as well as some roasted in the Nordic tradition, which is “a little lighter and with some different tastes than you may not have had before,” Rayman explained. “It’s a subtle difference from what people are used to. Accessible but with a lot of options you may not have had before.” In the evenings, a carefully selected beer program takes over, with unusual offerings from Nordic microbreweries, curated by Beer Street’s Lorcan Precious. The accompanying spirits program features Aquavit cocktails, Finnish moonshine and Scandinavian bitters on the rocks along with other rarely highlighted spirits from the region. Pei and Rayman anticipate opening Búðin just ahead of Christmas, giving their customers a shot at some unique, last minute Nordic designed gifts. Organized by Búðin’s third partner, Iceland / Norway-based Rut Hermannsdottir, the store will feature goods from Nordic designers, many of whom are being featured the very first time in New York. Along with the approval, the committee recommended that Two Trees reinforce its commitment to providing 660 units of affordable housing, suggested they consider a different mix of affordability and make commitments to local businesses and hiring. “We are extremely grateful for the CB1 Land Use Committee’s support, and the many, many hours they have spent with us and the Williamsburg community during this yearlong public dialogue, said Jed Walentas, Principal of Two Trees Management. “We will carefully review and consider all of the committee’s recommendations and do as much as possible to meet them. Next steps in the Domino land use process are full Community Board vote (Tuesday, December 10th), followed by reviews by the Borough President, City Planning Commission and City Council.

MADD New York Announces 2013 Legislative Champions
Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) New York announced its “2013 Legislative Champions,” this week, recognizing State Senators Martin Dilan and Chuck Fuschillo, Assembly Member Harvey Weisenberg and Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver for their leadership within the Legislature to stop drunk driving, by improving Leandra’s Law in 2013. Leandra’s Law (Child Passenger Protection Act) is named for Leandra Rosado, an 11 year old girl killed on the Henry Hudson Parkway in October 2009, when her friend’s mother, Carmen Huertas, flipped
the car they were traveling in, while allegedly under the influence of alcohol. Six other children were also injured during the incident. The law made it an automatic felony, on the first offense, to drive drunk with a person age 15 or younger inside the vehicle. The bill was unanimously passed by the Assembly and Senate and signed into law in November 2009. The 2013 Leandra’s Law improvements went into effect on November 1st, closing loopholes which hindered implementation of the ignition interlock aspect of Leandra’s Law. Among the improvements, Leandra’s Law now extends the
period of interlock restriction to one year (from the six month minimum), allows interlocks to be installed pre-sentence and requires any claim that a defendant won’t own or operate a car during the one year license suspension to be made under oath, potentially subjecting the offender to additional charges if he or she lies. “Leading up to the initial passage of Leandra’s Law and working to strengthen certain provisions since, I’ve had the privilege to work with a group of unbelievably dedicated people,” Dilan said. “It’s truly an honor to be recognized by MADD, an organization that has
been a driving force behind tougher DWI regulations nationwide.” “Tragically, drunk driving has cost the lives of far too many of my fellow New Yorkers and it is essential that we continue to ensure that offenders are caught and punished,” added Silver. As part of its “Campaign to Eliminate Drunk Driving,” MADD advocates for laws requiring ignition interlocks for all convicted drunk drivers for at least six months, like Leandra’s Law. Today, 20 states including New York require ignition interlocks for all convicted drunk drivers. Leandra’s Law
made New York one of only four states that makes driving drunk with a child passenger in a vehicle a felony. “Thanks to their leadership, New York’s DWI law is more effective in stopping repeat offenses and rehabilitating DWI offenders,” said MADD New York Executive Director Rich Mallow. For more information on ignition interlocks, please visit madd.org/interlock. For information on DWI child endangerment laws, please visit: http:// www.madd.org/laws/child-endangerment.html.

Brooklyn Calling: London’s Rough Trade Opens in Williamsburg By Jeff Mann North Brooklyn’s position as the center of the music world was reaffirmed Sunday with the official opening of Rough Trade NYC, the iconic British music company’s third record store. Housed in a Broadway Stages-owned, former film prop warehouse on North 9th Street, the 15,000 square foot space, with its Rock ‘n’ Roll muraled walls, features scads of records and CDs, musical equipment, a café, bar, bookstore and an art exhibition. A performance space, holding around 250, complete with balcony seating, will showcase both local and established musicians. Designed by New York City-based Cycle Architecture, Rough Trade NYC is a far cry from the Village’s Tower Records of the 1980s, its closest New York comparison. Visu-

a monthly exhibition, curated by Rough Trade, which provides record labels and book publishers the opportunity to
tell a story and create an experience around a release. And the bookstore offers an eclectic mix, from Neil Young’s autobiography to the dark comedy, “All My Friends are Dead,” by Avery Monsen and Jory John. According to co-owner Stephen Godfroy, the build-out is far from done. “It’s just a starting point,” he said. “There’s lots of construction still underway, lots of product to put out in the
racks. It will take many weeks for us to be up to speed.” Rough Trade NYC is open from Monday to Saturday, 9:00AM – 11:00PM and Sundays from 10:00AM – 9:00PM. A complete listing of upcoming Rough Trade NYC performances is available at hƩp://www. roughtrade.com/events/2013/11.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Your Arian penchant for impatience shows, as you consider passing a problemprone project on to someone else. Best advice: Stay with it and work out those snarls yourself. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Even patient Bovines can be frustrated when carefully made plans go awry. But crank up that “stick-to-it-ivity” you do so well, and you’ll soon find that your schedule is back in sync. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Your aspect favors using more resourceful means in dealing with a workplace situation. Some discreet checking around could help shed light on the root cause of the problem. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) You show an unusually strong streak of stubbornness in rejecting suggestions from friends and/or family members early in the week. But you become more receptive by the week’s end. LEO (July 23 to August 22) The Big Cat might find a gentler approach more effective when dealing with those who resist needed changes. Remember, the word “persuasion” starts with the sound “purr.” VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A disappointing experience with someone you felt you could trust can be painful. But there just might be more to this situation than you’re aware of. Press for an explanation.
LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Changing your views about something you believe in isn’t easy. But you might reconsider as the facts come in. Keep your mind open, even if you’re uneasy about what you might learn. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) You might have to do some serious shifting of gears to get your project back on track. But cheer up. Your hard work starts to produce some positive results by the week’s end. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) An unsettling mood at the start of the week soon lifts and gives way to a more positive attitude as you find fun and friendship beginning to dominate your aspect. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A delay in firming up holiday plans could work to your advantage. Use this time to scout out possibilities that might be more in line with what those close to you would prefer. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Some people might question some of the new friends you’ve welcomed into your life. But your ability to see beyond the obvious helps you recognize how special they are. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Financial matters can be especially tricky this week. It’s best to follow a conservative investment path for now, and wait for a more fortuitous time to take a bolder approach. BORN THIS WEEK: Your warmth, your humor and your genuine concern for others make you someone people love to keep close to their lives. © 2013 King Features Synd., Inc.
