North Brooklyn May Lead Charge on Solving City’s Trash Crisis By Tanay Warerkar

North Brooklyn is on route to pioneer a solution to at least one of New York City’s trash problems. And Waste Management, one of the nation’s largest private trash collection companies and environmental solutions provider, is looking to be that change maker. Working in coordination with the city’s De-

partment of Sanitation (DSNY) and Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), Waste Management of New York (WMNY) is seeking to establish a pilot program to recycle Brooklyn’s food waste. The organization has applied to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) to alter its permit to allow it to operate source separated or-

ganic (SSO) equipment –essentially the processing of food waste – at its Varick Avenue solid waste transfer station. Currently, close to 30 percent of the city’s waste is eligible for source separated composting, according to the DSNY. “New York City has efforts under way to divert this material from the waste stream for composting and generation

of renewable energy,” said George McGrath, a spokesperson for WMNY. “WMNY is installing the SSO equipment at the Varick facility as part of a demonstration project to test the effectiveness of this technology in converting food waste to a renewable energy source.” For Waste Management, it will be the first time it tests the SSO equipment in the New

York City area, and based on the success of the pilot program, it will seek to implement it elsewhere as well. Well known to North Brooklynites, this community, along with the South Bronx and Southeast Queens processes over 70 percent of the city’s trash. 40-Mile Bike Showcases Best of Green Brooklyn By Tanay Warerkar

Close to one thousand people will mount their bikes on July 27 to make the 40-mile journey between the Newtown Creek Barge in Greenpoint and Rockaway Beach. The aptly titled, Epic Ride, is returning for a sixth year running. The annual event invites cyclists to ride along the currently-underconstruction, 14-mile long Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway that is being developed along Brooklyn’s waterfront between Greenpoint and Bay Ridge. Five miles of the project are already complete, and this year riders will get a glimpse of some of the newest additions to the Greenway including naval cemetery landscape at the Brooklyn Navy Yard, the completed first phase of the Columbia Waterfront Park, new infrastructure along Van Brunt Street in Red Hook, and post-Hurricane Sandy repairs along the Shore Park Greenway in Bay Ridge. “The Epic is the quintessential mid-summer bike ride around the entire Brooklyn waterfront and ending up on the

beach where many riders cool off with a plunge into the Atlantic,” said Milton Puryear, one of the three founders of Brooklyn Greenway Initiative (BGI), the non-profit organization behind the bicycling event as well as the creation of the Greenway. “The feel of the ride is relaxed and collegial and ‘of the people’. Riders get to move at their preferred pace with a fast and a moderate group starting sequentially at the beginning.” BGI has worked for the past decade with public agencies, private owners, local community boards, civic organizations, and elected officials, stewarding the project, and spearheading the construction. Making this year’s Epic Ride unique is that BGI is seeking certification from the Council for Responsible Sport, which certifies events that have a strong social value while reducing their environmental impact. The TD 5Boro Bike Tour, and the Chicago Marathon have received similar certifications. If approved, The Epic Ride will be the first sustainable Brooklyn-based sporting event, according to BGI. “We are excited to

put into motion this new dimension of ‘green’ practices for The Epic Ride this year,” said Brian McCormick, one of the other founders of BGI. “Through these efforts and by example we have a renewed commitment to reduce our carbon footprint.” Once complete, the Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway will serve as a landscaped route for pedestrians, runners and cyclists. BGI was able to get $20 million in federal funding for the project, and at present the city’s Department of Transportation has identified 23 capital projects ranging in budgets from $1 million to $20 million to build along the Greenway. The five miles of the Greenway already in place include Kent Avenue, Flushing Avenue, Brooklyn Bridge Park, and the northern end of Van Brunt Street. Four new segments of the Greenway are currently under construction. The Epic Ride also allows riders to see the potential of what the combination of the Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway and the Jamaica Bay Greenway might look like, the latter of which covers areas beyond Bay Ridge and parts of Queens. Riders not quite committed to make the 40mile can also participate in alternate routes of 26 miles, and 14 miles respectively. North Brooklyn May Lead Charge on Solving City’s Trash Crisis

Continued from Page 1 processes close to 7,000 tons of trash each day. The pilot program would be yet another solution the city is exploring, especially in the aftermath of increased protests to equally distribute the burden of trash among the boroughs. The problematic implementation of the Solid Waste Management Plan (SWMP), which would have allowed for such a distribution, means that the solution being explored by WMNY might be one of the ways to go. WMNY will host a public meeting next month for the community to raise its questions and concerns regarding the project. The State will then review those comments before making its decision on WMNY’s application. At present, WMNY’s Varick Street facility accepts residential waste collected by the DSNY in Brooklyn, and then transports it in sealed rail cars to be taken to

disposal sites outside the city. WMNY has assured that the new technology will not pose any health risks to the community. “SSO processing involves food waste and does not pose any health or environmental risks,” said McGrath. “All of the SSO processing takes place within Waste Management’s

Varick solid waste transfer station, within a fully enclosed building with environmental controls to protect air quality and minimize impacts from noise and odors.” WMNY Meeting for SSO Equipment Installation, August 7, 2014, 6 p. m., 211 Ainslie Street, for more information contact Joanne Persad with WMNY at 718–533–5267

Memories Etched On Wood: The Newest Medium for Photography

By Tanay Warerkar

Williamsburg is focusing its innovative lens on a new art form – printing pictures on wood. Your memories no longer need to be relegated to film, and that’s thanks to the artistic genius of Dan Visel. PixiWood, as his company is titled, allows people to have their photographs printed on American Birch. “A year ago I didn’t even think this was a business,” said Visel, who officially launched last summer. “But then I started experimenting with several surfaces like metal and cardboard but wood grain was the one that came through. My friends started asking about it, and a lot of what I do is word of mouth,

so it sort of took off from there.” Visel is originally from Michigan, and moved to Williamsburg for a job. He has more than 20 years of experience in the printing business and the arts. But the idea for PixiWood came from a more practical reality. Visel’s picture frames were destroyed during his move to the neighborhood, and not wanting to spend money on frames, he began experimenting with different materials ultimately settling on wood. He tested his work out at local markets. It was an instant hit. Then there was the question of turning it into a business. Visel got in touch with his childhood friend, J. D. Fiscus, a web design-

er, to put together a website for the new business. Customers can submit pictures online in various formats, and select a variety of sizes for their finished products that range anywhere between $55 and $250. Visel uses a threestep process to create his pieces. The wood is sanded and treated, and then the environmentally friendly ink is placed on the surface, where it becomes a photograph just like any other – only more rustic and sophisticated to look at. “The biggest obstacle has been getting my name out there and getting the product out to people,” said Visel. “I’ve got a really cool product and when people see it they really love it.” And Visel’s influ-

Dan Visel

ence is rapidly spreading across the States – including a regular customer based in Hawaii. But he has no plans for expansion just yet. At present he just wants to focus on the work at hand and continue to innovate. His work orders have increased significantly since he launched his website, and Visel

wants to build on that momentum. He said his work fits in perfectly with the entrepreneurial spirit of the neighborhood. He’s encouraged by the largely young demographic of the neighborhood, who are always excited to try new things. Visel holds a full-time job apart from running

PixiWood, but the success of the business will allow him to pursue his passion full-time come September. “Technology is changing the way we do everything,” he said. “I want to continue to do more custom made work and collaborate with artists and photographers in the neighborhood.”

Lyft Courts Community Support After Legal Letdown By Rolyne Joseph and Tanay Warerkar

Following a Manhattan Supreme Court judge’s decision forcing Lyft to comply with heightened operating criteria or face a potential shut down, the company continues to seek support for its ride-sharing app in public-transportation starved neighborhoods like Greenpoint in hopes of ultimately launch the model it successfully operates in over 65 US cities. In an agreement reached last Friday, Lyft will allow the Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC) to test its app and approve how drivers are dispatched before a contract is signed.

In addition, the Manhattan Supreme Court asked Lyft to show TLC that its drivers have the requisite insurance coverage required for them to continue providing service in Rochester and Buffalo. Lyft has until Friday to comply, but the organization is continuing to work at a grassroots level to find a solution. On Tuesday, Lyft sponsored an event hosted by the Greenpoint Chamber of Commerce at Charlotte Patisserie on Manhattan Avenue. The organization used the occasion to raise awareness of its app, and the benefits it brings to a community terribly underserved by public transportation, and which

L-R Michael and Magda Lechowicz and Chamber President Jeff Mann

starting this week will be affected by a iveweek shutdown of the G-train. “That’s one of the problems we are trying to solve,” said Paige Thelen, a spokesperson for Lyft in regards to underserved neighborhoods. “The event at Charlotte gives helps us in our goal of bringing community members together. In fact several small business owners in other cities work as drivers for Lyft to supplement their jobs.”

Assemblyman Joe Lentol, Chamber Chair Elaine Brodsky and President Jeff Mann, Charlotte Patisserie’s Magda and Michael Lechowicz and the Lyft team

Representatives from the organization encouraged potential supporters to sign a Change.org petition, which has already received closed to 10,000 signatures from the city’s residents for the app to move forward as it has in other cities. In cities where the ride-sharing app is fully functional, interested drivers can sign up to participate; customers contact drivers directly through the app, and payment is made as a donation for the service received, as opposed to a fixed rate. TLC has expressed concern that this might

compromise safety. But at Tuesday’s event, Lyft representatives once again stressed the thorough and rigorous nature of their screening process including strict background checks, maintaining high customer approval ratings, vehicle inspections and a $1 million insurance, which is $700,000 more than the city’s minimum requirement for taxis. Greenpoint business owners and residents at least were eager for the app’s launch in its entirety. “We’re not car owners but we’re considering using the service,” said

Greenpoint Chamber member Timothy Mullins, one of the attendees at Tuesday’s event. “The fact that it is internet based is kind of cool. Subway is a hassle and using Lyft would be less of a hassle.” “I like the option that you actually contact a driver and the person can come to you,” added Lauren Lawson, another attendee and a Chamber of Commerce member. There is no official date for the launch in the city yet, but Lyft representatives at Tuesday’s event were hopeful that it would be within the next couple of months.

New Tasting Room Offers the Latest in American Wines, Beers, and Cheeses By Tanay Warerkar

Staying true to Williamsburg DIY and “Growing Local,” character, Humboldt & Jackson, named for the intersection on which it’s located, opened its doors on July 11, adding yet another unique culinary experience to neigh-

borhood’s growing list of cutting-edge restaurants. The restaurant, essentially a tasting room, offers a wide variety of carefully curated wines, beers, meats, and cheeses. And what’s more – they’re all crafted entirely in the States.

Humboldt & Jackson is the vision of Bill Reed, the man behind the southern-inspired tastes of Brooklyn Star on Lorimer Street. “The vision was definitely to create a neighborhood American tasting room,” said Reed. “The best part is

serves as a multi-purpose space for the restaurant – some of Reeds ideas include a pop-up chef space, an art gallery, and hosting cooking events. Opening night featured a jazz performance – just a small taste of the neighborhood hangout Reed is envisioning. Reed, who lives close to the restaurant, said the space was occupied for

that I get to work with some amazing chefs, and we have a steady collection of wines from places like Arizona, Idaho, and Michigan, and I’m really excited to be able to show the potential of American farming.” On this venture, Reed worked alongside his wife Pamela, and sommelier Sam Nahid. A black and white board listing the day’s specials greets customers as they walk through the doors at the establishment. Stools are lined along a wood paneled bar that seat around 30 people. An American flag hangs proudly at the center of the room at the back of the restaurant. The room can seat up to sixty people, but it also

several years by an Italian catering hall, Cozy Royale, at which he happened to stop by one night before it closed, for a family style meal. The owner was interested in moving her business, and offered to let Reed take over, and after months of careful planning, redesigning the space, and crafting a menu, Humboldt & Jackson was born.

“The response so far has been great,” said Reed. “We are not on a busy street and we want this to be a place that will be frequented by people living in the surrounding areas.” Humboldt & Jackson, 434 Humboldt Street, 718–349– 3355, Open Mon-Thu 4 p.m. to 12 a.m., and Fri-Sun 4 p.m. to 1 a.m., for more info email humboldtjackson@gmail.com

Nitehawk to Return to Williamsburg Waterfront By Tanay Warerkar

On Sunday evenings, as the crowds dissipate from the Williamsburg waterfront and the food trucks and vendors have pulled away, the area between North 11th and 12th Streets on Kent Avenue transforms into an outdoor movie theater. It’s all part of the 7th annual 50 Kent Festival that kicked off in May, which has featured a music concert series organized by the Northside Media Group, an open-air market provided by Brooklyn Flea, a community bike education center with bike skills classes for children and adults, a monthly pop-up roller rink with classes offered by the Gotham Girls Roller Derby, and a craft fair that will conclude the festival in September. This month and next, Nitehawk Cinemas brings back its popular free

outdoor summer movie screening series for three weekends. “This year we expanded the series beyond just concerts to include more variety of free community programming, including the outdoor movies for which we partnered with local operator Nitehawk Cinema,” said Ed Janoff, the Executive Director of the Open Space Alliance for North Brooklyn, the organization behind the 50 Kent Festival. “Their history of producing exciting cinema events such as signature series, films with live music, food pairings and brunches, as well as their North Brooklyn roots, made them a natural choice to complement all the other activities OSA and its partners are bringing to 50 Kent this summer.” The three films featured this year in Nitehawk’s outdoor line up are the Coen

Brothers’ 2000 adventurecomedy, Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?, starring George Clooney; The James Bond classic, To Russia with Love, with Sean Connery at the helm; and finally the western-comedy, Three Amigos, starring Steve Martin, and loosely based on Akira Kurosawa’s seminal 1954 film, Seven Samurai. A number of food vendors will also be present for the screenings including Brooklyn Soda Works, Luzzo’s Group, and Mario & Sons. Short musical performances kick off at 7 p.m., and the screenings begin at sundown. Attendees are encouraged to bring blankets and chairs, and since the screenings are free, spaces run out quickly, but for $12 Nitehawk seats you in the VIP section, which gives you easy access to the bar, a free beer and popcorn. “The best part of these

events for us is translating what we normally do at Nitehawk Cinema on a larger scale,” said Matthew Viragh, the founder and executive director of Nitehawk Cinema. “We pair each movie with a local band that plays an inspired musical performance related to each movie be-

forehand. And we tailor our food offerings to relate to the movie too. This year’s screenings would not have happened without the support of Open Space Alliance and they’ve done a great job throughout northern Brooklyn protecting our parks and curating unique partners and

programming throughout the public spaces.“ For detailed information on the film screenings visit http://www.nitehawkcinema.com/series/ nitehawk-outdoors/ and for more information on the 50 Kent Festival visit http://osanb.org/50-kentfestival-to-begin-may-4th/

ExxonMobil Supports Greenpoint Youth

E

xxonMobil is committed to improving the quality of life in the communities where our employees live and work. Our three corporate focus areas are education, health and improving economic opportunities for women. In Greenpoint, we seek to further these objectives by supporting a number of schools and other worthy organizations in the community. At PS 110, ExxonMobil supports the annual Green Science Week where students participate in hands-on science projects. And beginning this year, we expanded our support for local schools, helping to support PS 34, PS 110, IS 318, MS 126, and the Williamsburg High School for Architecture and Design. Our focus is to support the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) education of Greenpoint youth. We also continue to support the SYSTEM program together with NYU and the Greenpoint YMCA. This paid summer internship offers local high school students intense, hands-on exposure to STEM fields while also helping them develop a direct connection to Greenpoint through ExxonMobil congratulates the Greenpoint teens who worked with Groundswell to create this beautiful Welcome to Greenpoint mural. community service. ExxonMobil is also a proud supporter of the Groundswell Mural Program. Groundswell was founded in 1996 by a collection of New York City artists, educators and activists based in the belief that “there is something unique and powerful about the collaborative art making process.” Groundswell programs bring together artists, young people and community organizations to develop mural projects to help beautify local neighborhoods, promote youth self-expression and help advance social change and underrepresented perspectives.

Open Letter to Residents Welcome to the sixth issue of the ExxonMobil Greenpoint Progress, a newsletter designed to keep you informed regarding the accomplishments of the Greenpoint Petroleum Remediation Project and ExxonMobil’s support for the Greenpoint community. We have made solid progress with remediation over the past year, and have expanded our support for local schools and other charitable organizations. It has been an exciting year, and as your community liaison, I would like to extend our thanks for your patience, encouragement and support of our remediation work. In 2013 we saw excellent performance from our product recovery systems and equipment. Our on-stream time, a measure of the time our equipment was in operation recovering product, was an incredible 95%. This level of reliability is considered top-notch performance in our industry, and resulted in a cumulative total of approximately 12.5 million gallons of product recovered, while at the same time treating a total of 4.7 billion gallons of water to federal Clean Water Act standards, and returning it to Newtown Creek.

Sincerely, Kevin Thompson

COMMUNITY LIAISON

We continue to operate the ExxonMobil SYSTEM program together with NYU and the Greenpoint YMCA, to support Science, Technology, Engineering and Math education in our community. Here, 2013 SYSTEM teens take aquatic samples in Black Rock Forest.

All Hype and Little Strife for Starbuck’s First Williamsburg Outpost By Rolyne Joseph

The chain store influx into North Brooklyn continued this week with the opening of Starbucks, on Union Avenue, on Monday, which follows the opening of Dunkin Donuts and Urban Outfitters in Williamsburg in the last few months, with the opening of J-Crew,

Whole Foods and New York Sports Club soon to follow. But most residents seemed unconcerned with the hoopla and/or angst surrounding the coffee chain’s opening. “I won’t have to go all the way down to Manhattan Avenue to buy a cup of coffee,” said Moshey Roth, 23, a Starbucks reg-

ular who stopped in for a Passion Fruit Tea Lemonade. “Starbucks right here is definitely a good idea and it’s going to be really packed.” In fact, he said he trusts it more than most places. “I’ve given so many chances to coffee stores,” he said. “I want to have good coffee. So I always

An employee behind the counter prepared a white chocolate mocha frappuccino with java chips and peppermint, and topped it off with whipped cream, as she finished. It was just another day at a regular, neighborhood Starbucks. Coffee shops adjacent to Starbucks like Atlas Café and The West Coffee Shop seem unperturbed

by the potential threat to business. “We offer completely different drinks from Starbucks such as craft beers on tap, cocktails and wine,” said Sarah Madges, 24, a manager at The West. “We have people that come in and they still order our home-brewed lattes. They [Starbucks] have fake-ordering drinks and we have people working together to prepare fresh coffee and drinks.” Back at the Starbuck, the curiosity was reaching a crescendo. People walking along the street

stopped to peer through the tinted windows. “I think it’s great,” said Frank Rossetti, 54. “They’re modernizing and I think they should open up one or two more. I’m surprised they didn’t open one here a long time ago.” Starbucks did not respond to a request to comment on the story. AddressReport Knows What’s Lurking Beneath Your Home By Tanay Warerkar

Think you’ve found your dream apartment? Better get an AddressReport to make sure. Popular New York City apartment search engine Rentenna is now AddressReport – and is providing a comprehensive database not just for renters, but for buyers and brokers as well. Since crafting their Green Score in 2013 – identifying the amount of green coverage in each neighborhood, and their playful map on the city’s celebrity residents broken down by neighborhood, Rentenna’s reach and demand has grown rapidly. This led its founders to use the resources available to them to craft a new website and a more comprehensive search tool. “We shifted our focus because we had so many people coming to us and

asking for that additional information,” said Alicia Schwartz, the co-founder of Rentenna, and now AddressReport. “It got us thinking about all the information that was publicly available through government agencies, and we thought it would be interesting to present that information in this format.” Typing a city address on the AddressReport website gives you information on the building – whether mixed-use, residential, or commercial, and provides information about the closest subway stop and/ or public transportation, nearby grocery stores, gyms, Laundromats, and pharmacies. And just in case a landlord or a sketchy roommate decides to take you for a ride, AddressReport also provides information on the violations issued against the building, lists the crime statistics for the

surrounding streets, and provides similar information in regards to noise, filth, and air quality complaints. They even cite rat reports. But it’s not just restricted to the surrounding streets, AddressReport gives customers a brief overview of the neighborhood as well highlighting the buildings that have been demolished and the new ones that have sprung up in the neighborhood. In fact, AddressReport’s study of Greenpoint revealed several interesting and vital findings. Out of the 240 neighborhoods identified in the city, Greenpoint ranked 104 in regards to green streets. This does not take into account the parks in the neighborhood, but looks at green coverage for every square meter of land. For Greenpoint that number is 0.00142 trees compared with Carnegie

Hill, the highest, at 0.00528 trees. The average rent for a studio in the month of July is $2,125, $2,325 for a one bedroom, $2,750 for a two bedroom, and $3,650 for a three bedroom. And those rents are certainly a reflection of the wealth of the neighborhood. Part 360 Permit Modification Application Number 2-6104-00010/00002-0 To Permit the Installation and Operation of Source Separated Food Waste Processing Equipment

Solicitud de modificación del Permiso de la Parte 360 número 2-6104-00010/00002-0 para permitir la instalación y operación de equipo de procesamiento de residuos de alimentos separados según su origen

Project Location: Waste Management of New York, LLC 215 Varick Avenue Brooklyn, New York 11237

Ubicación del proyecto: Waste Management of New York, LLC 215 Varick Avenue Brooklyn, Nueva York 11237

Waste Management of New York, LLC (WMNY), has made an application to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) to modify the existing Part 360 Permit for its Varick I solid waste transfer station at 215 Varick Avenue in Brooklyn, New York.

WMNY is proposing to install and operate source separated organic (SSO) processing equipment at the Varick I solid waste transfer station to support a food waste recycling project. Food waste will be delivered by DSNY collection vehicles and commercial collection vehicles to WMNY’s Varick Avenue Transfer Station. WMNY will use the SSO equipment to homogenize and liquefy the material, and transfer the resulting Engineered Food Waste Product (EFW Product) by sealed tanker truck to the Newtown Creek waste water treatment plant operated by the NYC Department of Environmental Protection (NYCDEP). The Newtown Creek plant will introduce the EFW Product to its anaerobic digestion facilities to recover energy inherent in the EFW Product.

The goal of this project is to capture organics for recycling by diverting additional materials from the waste stream and increasing renewable energy production, to help New York City achieve its sustainability goals. WMNY will hold a public information meeting in Brooklyn Community Board (CB) District 1 to explain the Part 360 Permit Modification application and process and to offer the public the opportunity to ask questions and comment on the permit application. The meeting will take place on August 7, 2014 at 6:00 PM, at the Swinging 60’s Senior Center, 211 Ainslie Street, Brooklyn, New York, 11211 (Corner of Manhattan Avenue). Documents related to this application are stored at: Brooklyn Community Board No. 1, 435 Graham Avenue, Brooklyn, New York 11211, and will be available to view online at: http://www.wm.com/NYCMA/ For further information, contact: Joanne Persad, Waste Management of New York, LLC, 123 Varick Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11237, telephone 718-533-5267.
