TABLE OF CONTENTS

To the Graduating Class of 2020,

The Class of 2020 ................................6

How does one even begin to write a letter of encouragement to a group of people that have had their senior year turned inside out and upside down in ways that were unimaginable just six months ago. No one could have anticipated witnessing the entire world practically shutting down in just a matter of days. One minute you’re on spring break and the next you’re being told to “stay at home,” and “socially distance yourself” from your classmates, friends and neighbors. Next, you learn that you won’t be going back to high school but instead you will finish your senior year via online instruction. Spring sports are cancelled. Social events are cancelled or postponed. Graduation ceremonies are up in the air higher than mortar boards thrown by an exuberant senior. What a roller coaster you have been forced to ride. But ride it out you have. You have carried on and you have perservered. You have made it to the end of your senior year even during these unprecedented times. Oh, the stories you will have to share with your future children as they prepare for their senior year. Use this experience to help you navigate the roller coasters of life that are yet to come. When you are blindsided by life events, look back on these days and remember that even the worst situations are usually temporary and that they too will pass. Have courage and press on, just as you have done the last two months. Remember you are a part of a special group of people. You are the Class of 2020 and you are Lee County Strong!

Class of 2020 overcomes COVID-19 challenges

T

he 2019-2020 school year had been a fairly normal one for students around Lee County, and at the beginning of March, area seniors had their sights set on one of life’s greatest stepping stones: high school graduation. However, a new Coronavirus, commonly referred to by many as COVID-19, had other plans. All schools in Lee County, both public and private, made announcements from March 13 through 15 that school would be put on hold until at least early April as the virus began to make its presence known around the state. Nearly two weeks later on March 26, Gov. Kay Ivey and Alabama State Superintendent Dr. Eric Mackey announced that all K-12 public schools around the state would

have to move to “alternative methods of instruction.” That ruling applied to the Lee County School System, along with Auburn and Opelika city schools. The county’s private schools, Glenwood, Lee-Scott Academy, The Oaks and Trinity Christian, soon followed suit, resulting in the cancellation or postponement of traditional spring festivities including field trips, proms, sports seasons and, most importantly, graduation. Graduation ceremonies around the county will be held, albeit, in new and creative ways. Smiths Station has plans to do a drive-thru ceremony with graduates queing up in line and driving up to receive their diplomas. Opelika High School planned multiple small group commencement activities allowing a small number

of students and up to six members of their families to participate a time. Longtime followers of the Observer may notice a different format for this year’s Graduation publication, which was made with seniors in mind. As you flip through the pages of this magazine, you’ll see and read about 34 of our area’s seniors. These seniors volunteered to represent the more than 1,700 high school seniors in Lee County that make up the Class of 2020. This will certainly be a senior year that many will not soon forget. To those featured and to all of our area seniors, we wish you the best as you begin charting out the path for your life and make a difference wherever you are planted. Sincerely, The Opelika Observer Staff

I

want to congratulate our four seniors from Lee County on their graduation and success as students at the Alabama School of Mathematics and Science. Although our academic year did not end as we anticipated, graduating from ASMS is a reflection of the dedication, resilience, and excellence these students have exhibited throughout their time at our institution. When you look at their accomplishments, indeed, it is remarkable. I am so grateful to see these students achieving at such high levels, and I am confident they will continue to do so throughout their pursuit of higher education and into their career. They will be ASMS alumni who transform their communities, states, and nations through their scholarship, innovation and leadership. Congratulations again to our ASMS Lee County graduates. We are proud of you, and we celebrate with you! - Dr. John Hoyle, President

1

How long have you been attending/going to ASMS? I’ve (been) attending ASMS since my sophomore year of high school, so three years in total.

2

What activities/groups/ sports have you been involved with? I’ve had the wonderful opportunity to be the president of the Movie Club, treasurer of the Key Club, chair of the Student Judiciary Committee, co-head of the Marketing Team, Biology Laboratory Assistant, member of the Animal Rescue Foundation of Mobile and The Math League.

3

Going into your senior year, what were some goals you had for yourself? College, career etc.? Were you able to realize any of those before the virus hit and caused school to be taught remotely? I wanted to enjoy my senior year and take time to establish what I wanted to do going into adulthood. I wanted to finish

out strong with straight A’s and try to take as many classes that were interesting and aligned with my future goals. It always seemed to be a feat to juggle the present and the future, so I just wanted to make sure I had a strong foundation when applying to college and for any future endeavors. The virus hitting was definitely a shocker however, as many students have never taken online courses (including myself), and many ASMS faculty and staff have never had to make such a large transition. I was thankful however to have lots of professors and fellow peers get me to my goals. I was able to take all of the classes that I wanted including molecular biology, oceanography, B/C calculus, organic chemistry and many more. I also was able to finish out my college applications and kept up my grades along with them, along with discovering true passions with them. It has certainly been a challenge, but the virus has definitely not put a damper on any of my dreams and future plans as I move forward.

Alabama School of Mathematics and Science

4

What were your emotions when you found out that you’d have to study from home the rest of the semester? I was definitely upset, mostly because of leaving friends behind on such short notice. Since this is occurring in my senior year, lots of things have been taken away from us, but quality time with friends back in Mobile being the hardest to overcome. School work has also definitely left me with its own plethora of challenges. I’ve grown accustomed to the wonderful way that the ASMS professors teach, and the hands-on learning and discussion really enriched the learning environment. The online learning environment

is definitely harder to gain insight from, and has taken time to fully grasp the style that online teaching brings to the table. While it is not ideal, I’ve learned to appreciate everything that my teachers are doing to make the online platform as smooth as possible, all the while trying to ease the emotions that so many of us are feeling.

5

What is your plan moving forward? My plan moving forward is definitely finishing college with degrees in biopsychology and chemistry. I plan to attend a MD-PhD program in the hopes to gain my doctorate in psychiatric medicine and become a clinical research scientist in behavioral science. I hope to use college and the general future to hone my skills and knowledge so I can jump into the world of research and science overall.

6

When you look back on your school years at ASMS in the future, what do you think you’ll remember most? I will remember the people who really drove the community aspect for me, which is majority of the students and teachers. These people have taught me so much more than I could have possibly imagined and I’m so grateful for them. The wonderful friends that I have made and grown to love. The teachers who were always there to make sure that I was feeding my intellect and always engaged into something new. Those are the things I’ll never forget.

How long have you been attending/going to ASMS? Three years, ever since my sophomore year!

What activities/groups/ sports have you been involved with? Sophomore year I was a part of Key Club, but I mainly took it easy that year. However, junior year, I participated in my school’s Spanish Cultural Exchange program and was able to go to Seville, Spain for three months! I was inducted into both the National Honor Society and the National Spanish Honor Society. During my senior year, I was an RLST (Residential Life Support Team), President of Spanish Club, and the Head of Equipment for Science Bowl. Going into your senior year, what were some goals you had for yourself? College, career etc.? Were you able to realize

3

—14—

any of those before the virus hit and caused school to be taught remotely? This year, I had really only hoped to enjoy my senior year. I was excited to finally get to experience what I had seen those older than me experience for the past few years. I was excited to be with my friends as we got accepted into colleges. Then, the virus hit, and we were sent home. Although this meant that I wouldn’t have senior prom or a Senior Tea, I still think that my high school experience isn’t that empty.

4

What were your emotions when you found out that you’d have to study from home the rest of the semester? When we first were being sent home, it was supposed to be temporary. Still, I think we all knew that we were not going to be coming back. I was obviously very sad, and I

cried with my friends during our last day together. It was hard to come to terms with the fact that I was leaving school, a place that had become my home for the past three years.

5

What is your plan moving forward? If the virus calms down by August, I will be pursuing a degree in Psychology at Swarthmore College. Currently, though, I’m working on finishing my work for my classes.

6

When you look back on your school years at ASMS in the future, what do you think you’ll remember most? ASMS has been a life-changer for me. I have friends scattered all over Alabama, and being apart after being together for so long is strange. I’m going to miss walking off to Starbuck’s with my friends, running through downtown Mobile, and sitting on Front Lawn. These past few years have served me well, and I have grown so much as a person.

CONGRATS TO

AUBURN HIGH’S Class of

2020

Though this school year did not end as planned, it has not changed the spirit that is Auburn High School. I want to convey my admiration for the resilience of this particular group of Auburn High graduates for having faced unprecedented times, rising to the occasion, and now earning a diploma. It is always bittersweet to see yet another talented crop of graduates go out into the world to do great things, but now is the time for these young people to take the next step in their lives and make a positive impact. - Dr. Shannon Pignato AHS Principal

Photos by Robert Noles

} Brock Hughes How long have you been attending/going to this school? High school since beginning at AHS 10th to 12th - in Auburn (my) whole life.

1

2 3

What activities/ groups/sports have you been involved with? Involved with baseball.

Going into your senior year, what were some goals you had for yourself? College, career etc.? Were you able to realize any of those before the virus hit and caused school to be taught remotely? Try to find a college where I'm gonna end up after high school, and want to find that out early. I was able to recognize that goal. I’m going to UT at Martin for undergrad and I want to go to a law school afterwards. } Anna Louise Wages How long have you been attending/ going to this school? All the way through, all three years 10th thru 12th.

1 2

What activities/groups/sports have you been involved with? Varsity basketball, vice president of student council and co-council of Auburn High Ambassadors.

3

Going into your senior year, what were some goals you had for yourself? College, career etc.? Were you able to realize any of those before the virus hit and caused school to be taught remotely? Didn't really know where I wanted to go all throughout senior year, still haven’t decided yet. My goal was to find a school that best suits me and my goal of being an attorney, and preparing me for law school. Senior year was about having fun with friends… I’m not going to Auburn, so keeping those relationships that I've made throughout Auburn is important to me. They’re the best friends ever and we Facetime every day. I’m deciding on which school I’m going to in the upcoming weeks.

4

What were your emotions when you found out that you’d have to study from home the rest of the semester? Can’t lie, kind of happy about studying from home for the rest of the semester, virus impacted baseball season though. Kind of sad about prom and senior skip day, etc. Didn’t get the chance to do many things, been to a few other dances, but these were specifically more senior events.

Auburn High School } Will Sorrells How long have you been attending/going to this school? I’ve been attending Auburn High School for three years now, 10th all the way through 12th grade.

3

What is your plan moving forward? Come August, I’m packing up and moving to Martin, starting baseball and focusing on school.

When you look back on this part of your life years from now, what do you think you’ll remember most? Probably remember the impact of the virus, be one of those things in history that kids will be learning about in the future.

What were your emotions when you found out that you’d have to study from home the rest of the semester? I’ve been done with high school since there’s a block system.. I finished in December. I’m not taking classes online, but had a lot of events planned for April/May. It’s a season of loss… I've been excited for those things since I was a freshman in high school. It was basically finding out these events were but canceled. My dad works at EAMC, and I want to do whatever possible to help lift stress from him and the COVID-19 situation. Even if that means missing senior skip day to keep everyone healthy and safe.

5

What is your plan moving forward? Study politics, philosophy and economics for undergrad and then law school for grad school, work in politics.

6

When you look back on this part of your life years from now, what do you think you’ll remember most? I’ll remember spending time with family. My siblings are my best friends and my parents are my biggest role models. I haven’t had time to spend together in years, so this quality time has been super fun and super rewarding.

—19—

What activities/ groups/sports have you been involved with? I was involved in football all three years, along with National Honor Society and National Technical Honor Society. I was also in Key Club and HOSA. Going into your senior year, what were some goals you had for yourself? College, career etc.? Were you able to realize any of those before the virus hit and caused school to be taught remotely? Some of my main goals were to maintain my 4.0 GPA and score high enough on the ACT for scholarships for college. I also plan to try and become a Physical Therapist. And lastly compete and have fun during the football season.

4

What were your emotions when you found out that you’d have to study from home the rest of the semester? It was kind of a shock at first and it stung obviously that my high school career had to end like this. However, I’m adjusting pretty well and will be happy to continue my education in college.

5 6

What is your plan moving forward? My plan is to attend UAB in the fall to become a physical therapist.

When you look back on this part of your life years from now, what do you think you’ll remember most? I think moving forward, I will remember all the football memories during practice and the games with my teammates and friends for life. But I will also remember all the hard work I did for my grades and all the studying and effort put into that side. I will remember all the lunch table conversations and arguments over sports with my friends. Overall my high school experience because it was unforgettable and fun.

While the end of this semester was not what you or any of us wished, we want to congratulate you on staying the course. You adapted to changing circumstances and stayed strong to finish your high school career. As you embark on the next chapter in your life, be sure

to take with you all the things you’ve learned during your time in our community. From the power of knowledge that your educators have instilled in you to the character and skills you’ve garnered outside the classroom, carry each lesson with you and continue to build on that solid foundation. Never stop learning, but

remember to stop, reflect and cherish where you came from. Some of you may be heading off to college or to start a career, and others may be beginning this next chapter right here at one of our community’s fine institutions. Either way, we hope that you take with you fond memories of a community that supports you fully and believes you have what it takes to excel.

} Isaac Clark How long have you been attendinggoing to this school? I have been attending Auburn High School since the brand new school opened in 2017.

2

What activities/groups/sports have you been involved with? I was involved primarily in E.D.U.C.A.T.E. As a queer trans man, having a supportive community at the school was really nice.

3

Going into your senior year, what were some goals you had for yourself? College, career etc.? Were you able to realize any of those before the virus hit and caused school to be taught remotely? To be honest , going into my senior year I didn’t have any goals. I was extremely depressed and suicidal, I had no goals for the school year let alone graduating. Before the virus hit the states, I had plans to graduate. Walk with cap and gown, the whole thing and get my core classes done at Southern Union. All in all...no. I

Aristotle once said “the roots of education are bitter, but the fruit is sweet.” I hope you look back on your pursuits in high school here in Lee County as a sweet success. Congratulations to each and every one of you, and I wish you the best, Class of 2020. Sincerely, Ron Anders, Jr. City of Auburn Mayor

definitely wouldn’t say I was able to realize my goals before the virus hit.

4

What were your emotions when you found out that you’d have to study from home the rest of the semester? I had none! I had my senior year online so it was no issue. The only difference for me was my twice-weekly in person work being stopped.

5

What is your plan moving forward? My plan is to go with the flow. With everything going on right now, having a set plan just gets tossed whenever you look at or listen to the news.

6

When you look back on this part of your life years from now, what do you think you’ll remember most? Gosh... most likely how stressful it was. The panic, grocery stores being cleared out, masks being a household essential like having toilet paper. Not to mention the memes too! Most likely about the toilet paper chaos.

as I could, like senior activities and stuff. I was trying to hang out with my classmates more. I ended up winning homecoming queen. The last few weeks of high school is when you really gotta figure stuff out, and we’re not getting to be around our teachers or our classmates to help us with that. As far as college plans, scheduling college visits and all that. Finding scholarships to apply for… it’s hard when you’re not able to talk to your teachers for real. They text us through Remind to keep us updated, but we can’t really just have a one-onone conversation with them. Working online is stressful because it’s better to have one-on-one with teachers in the classroom. self? College, career etc.? Were you able to realize any of those before the virus hit and caused school to be taught remotely? My main goal was to get more out of my shell and to get to know people I didn't, that one worked. Another was to get a baseball scholarship, and now I'm going to Bishop State Community College on one. I wanted to win the area championship in baseball again and we sadly couldn't finish the season.

4

What were your emotions when you found out that you’d have to study from

It’s just on a computer screen. I had an online class and that didn’t go too good for me, I actually had to take a class at Southern Union. I’m better hands-on than with computers.

4

What were your emotions when you found out that you’d have to study from home the rest of the semester? At first, the last week we were in school, we thought that it wasn’t really going to happen - everybody always talks about things, people overhype things, so we were just joking around, like ‘school might be out,’ we were getting happy and stuff. Then it actually happened, and we didn’t think it was going to happen like that. I didn’t know that was going to be my last day of high school. We didn’t get to enjoy our last week of high school, didn’t get to do a senior prank or anything like that.

5

What is your plan moving forward? Trying to finish up through high school and see how everything goes after graduation, and hopefully keep on getting my plans ready for college and stuff. Just decide on that and get

stuff ready for that. When you look back on this part of your life years from now, what do you think you’ll remember most? Well, for Beauregard, our high school, ever since freshman year… freshman year we had the killer clown threats and the bomb threats. Beauregard has been on lockdown, as you’ve seen on the news, a bunch of times. The tornado happened last year… the seniors have been through a lot since our freshman year, so I feel like we’ve missed out on a lot of school because of all that. It’s been tough for real. We really just have to all keep our heads up; we still have college to look forward to, we’re still gonna go out there and meet new people, it’s just… even though we didn’t get to enjoy the last days of high school, we can still, after all this hopefully blows over, we can get together and make some last memories with each other. Everybody just needs to keep their head up. There’s better days in the long run.

6

home the rest of the semester? I was confused as to how we will do it at first, but now it's just knowing I have to put my head down and work harder to focus.

5

What is your plan moving forward? I'm going to Bishop State Community College to play baseball and study in math and secondary education so I can teach and coach.

6

When you look back on this part of your life years from now, what do you think you’ll remember most?

—30—

I think it will be to never take anything for granted. It could be gone the next day, so you have to enjoy the moment you're in and treat it like it will be gone in seconds.

Dear Beauregard High School Class of 2020,

O

ne of the writing assignments that I used to give students in my history classes was to list historical events that occurred during their lifetimes. In my 46 years, I have witnessed some significant events, some which stand out more for personal reasons than historical ones. My senior class, the Class of 1991, thought that we had experienced an eventful two years with the fall of the Berlin Wall and Operation Desert Storm. With the exception of the classes in the 1940s, however, I am not sure that any other class in the history of our school has witnessed anything like what your young lives have experienced. You were born into the world of September 11, 2001; you have experienced a war on terror, an economic recession, and the demolition and rebuilding of our high school; you have lived the tragedy of March 3; and, now, a world pandemic, the likes of which none of us have seen. Former NBC news anchor Tom Brokaw christened the generation of

Americans who were born in the first few decades of the 20th century as the greatest generation. They experienced a global pandemic of their own in 1918-1919 and the hardship of two world wars, but that same generation also firmly established our country’s economic and political prowess. Maybe years from now, when the history of your generation is written, it will be a story akin to that of the greatest generation – one of Americans who overcame numerous hardships and tragedies to positively change the course of U.S. history. I hope that is the case, because selfishly, someone has to take care of my generation! We’re not getting any younger, you know! Please know that we have not forgotten you. We miss you! We are proud of your accomplishments, and we look forward to celebrating with you in the coming months and years. We hope and pray for your health and safety as well as that of your family. Sincerely, Richard L. Brown, Jr.

he Beulah High School Class of 2020 is comprised of a group of resilient young people who have seen firsthand the challenges and hurdles that life can present. No matter the circumstance, this fearless and innovative group of students will soar to new heights and achieve greatness. I am proud to have served as their principal. Congratulations!!! - Love, Dr. P

Beauregard Beulah High High School School my school's clubs. I have been a part of the Student Council, Beta Club, Health Occupations Students of America, Spanish Club, FCA, Chemistry Club, Prom Committee, the yearbook staff and I am also the secretary of my senior class. I have always found it very important to be involved in your school and community.

}Erin McKernie

1

How long have you been attending/going to Beulah? I have attended Beulah since kindergarten.

2

What activities/groups/ sports have you been involved with? I played recreational soccer for five years and I played tennis for two years in junior high. Ever since seventh grade, I have been very involved in

3

Going into your senior year, what were some goals you had for yourself? College, career etc.? Were you able to realize any of those before the virus hit and caused school to be taught remotely? My parents have always held very high standards for me, especially when it came to my grades in school. I was awarded when my grades were where they should be, and disciplined when they weren’t as high as my parents thought that they could be. I have always held

myself to these standards because I know that if I am doing the best that I can, I will be able to achieve a lot of great things in my life. With that being said, I started my senior year back in August with the goal of staying heavily involved in school activities while also maintaining all A’s throughout the year. Achieving this goal would allow me to maintain my high GPA and graduate in the top ten percent of my class. Before school was canceled, I was right on track to graduate in the top 10 of my class, I had held A’s in all of my classes, including the advanced placement ones.

4

What were your emotions when you found out that you’d have to study from home the rest of the semester? Your senior year and gradu-

—34—

ation is something you look forward to your whole life, and when I heard the news that my senior year was being cut short and there was a chance I would not even be able to have a graduation, I was heartbroken. I left school that last Friday thinking that I would be back at Beulah High on that following Monday with all of my friends and favorite teachers. Thinking about not being able to say those final goodbyes, not being able to live out that last day of high school, or even walking those halls one last time brings me to tears. There were so many things that I looked forward to my senior year such as getting to walk through the halls of my elementary school in my

cap and gown while all of the teachers that helped me and my classmates get to the places that we are today cheered us on, getting to attend my last awards day where my classmates and I would be recognized for the scholarships that we earned and given the cords that we had worked so hard for, and even the simple things like getting your last yearbook and letting all the people that have been by your side throughout all these years of school sign it. Having all these things taken away hurts more than I can even describe. There were so many more memories that were to be made that we seniors will not get the chance to live out. However, the memories that my class and I were able to make in the time that we were given at Beulah High will never

be forgotten and forever cherished.

5

What is your plan moving forward? Even though I am saddened by the events that have taken place, I will not be able to reach my goals if I dwell in the past. With that being said, I plan on accomplishing the goals that I set for myself from the beginning of the year and finishing my senior year strong. After I have completed my senior year, I plan on moving to Mobile this fall where I will attend The University of South Alabama and major in exercise science. After earning my bachelor’s degree, I will then move on to physical therapy school and earn my Ph. D, in hopes to one day open my own clinic.

Band. I also was apart of Beta Club, and Spanish Club where I hold the title of president. My senior year, I was able to join Student Council where I was a student representative for my class and was able to help my community.

3 }Naylin Cruz

1

How long have you been attending/going to Beulah? I started a month into third grade, nine years total.

2

What activities/groups/ sports have you been involved with? I was a majorette for the Pride of Beulah Marching

Going into your senior year, what were some goals you had for yourself? College, career etc.? Were you able to realize any of those before the virus hit and caused school to be taught remotely? 6

When you look back on this part of your life years from now, what do you think you’ll remember most? I feel as though in the future when I am reminiscing on my time at Beulah High, I will always be able to remember the memories that I made with my announcement group in my multimedia class. There were some days where we did not feel like making content or where we were frustrated with Coach Butz because he always held us to such a high standard, but those days were outweighed by all the good times and laughs that we had in that class. I am so thankful that I was able to be a part of the Bobcat Broadcast and I will always thank my group and our amazing teacher for such great memories.

home the rest of the semester? I was shocked. Although some days I dreaded going to school, it’s been in my daily routines for years, and having it suddenly stop was definitely something strange to get used to.

5

What is your plan moving forward? In the fall, I will be moving to California to attend John Paul Catholic University for a degree in business advertising and management. #C/O2023!

6

When you look back on your school years at Beulah in the future, what do you think you’ll remember most? The main thing I will remember is being apart of the band, and marching down the hill to a Friday night home football game. I’m definitely going to miss that the most.

Going into your senior year, what were some goals you had for yourself? College, career etc.? Were you able to realize any of those before the virus hit and caused school to be taught remotely? My goal was to graduate with good grades.

4

What were your emotions when you found out that you’d have to study from home the rest of the semester? Sad, because I miss my friends and teachers.

5

What is your plan moving forward? To start my career working at Kia Motors and eventually making my way up to the top just like my dad.

remotely? Going into senior year, I was very determined to make it that best year possible and I was shooting for valedictorian or salutatorian. I changed my career goals a few times throughout my junior year, but since then, I’ve been pretty set on pursuing a degree in elementary education. I recently committed to accept scholarships and admission to Auburn University at Montgomery. Thankfully I was able to realize these things before the virus hit, because I can’t imagine how stressful that would be right now. goal was to learn more about the career I’m planning to go into and the experience it gave me was amazing. Everything was hands on, I learned to take X-rays, suctioning, proper sterilization of instruments. I’m sad it had to end so soon. Through the internship program I did realize that I had chosen the right career path and I couldn’t wait to start!

4

What were your emotions when you found out that you’d have to study from home the rest of the semester? At first I didn’t believe it, I was thinking it would never come to this and I had no idea of the severity of this virus, but once it finally registered that I wasn’t going to finish the rest of my senior year with my friends, I was devastated. I would much rather be in a classroom than

4

What were your emotions when you found out that you’d have to study from home the rest of the semester? The first thing I did when I found out that we wouldn’t be returning to campus was text my friends because I was very upset. It really hit me hard because going into your senior year, everyone tells you not to wish it away and to savor every moment you have because it flies by and this kind of took the last moments of senior year away. I was very overwhelmed by my emotions because I went to school for the very last time and didn’t know it. The last day I went was the day before prom, so a couple of friends and I took a half day. I didn’t get to see all my teachers or all my classmates that day, and thinking back it just kind of sucks that it was my last day. It would have been so different if I had known.

5

What is your plan moving forward? Moving forward, once the virus has calmed down, I hope to be able to still get to say

learning through a computer.

5

What is your plan moving forward? My plan moving forward is to just try to continue as I would have before the virus hit, get my diploma and start college. Everything happens for a reason and I believe something good will come out of this for the class of 2020.

6

When you look back on this part of your life years from now, what do you think you’ll remember most? Looking back, I’ll mostly remember sports and being on a team. Being on a team is

—36—

goodbye to all my teachers and classmates and I hope to get those final moments and the ceremony we were all hoping for as seniors. This has taught me to not take anything for granted, even in frustration, because I never would have thought i would be wishing to go back to school. I am, however, excited for the future and getting to do all the college freshman things like dorm decorating and shopping and getting a fresh start.

6

When you look back on this part of your life years from now, what do you think you’ll remember most? When I look back on Beulah, I think the thing I will remember most is the people. Living in such a small community, it’s very easy to get attached to people and form relationships with them, and I think a lot of people in Beulah are closer than they think. I have become very close with many teachers, underclassmen, classmates and members of our community whom I know I’ll miss so much when I go off to college.

more than just participating in something. It creates a bond like no other, it’s almost like a second family who you can depend on and know that they will have your back. It’s very uplifting when you’re sharing a sport that you love with the people you grow to love. I’ll also remember all of our success such as volleyball, we were area champs, holding the best record Beulah’s volleyball team has seen in over 10 years, and I made the Class 3A Area 6 All Tournament Team. We had a great season to say the least.

Going into your senior year, what were some goals you had for yourself? College, career etc.? Were you able to realize any of those before the virus hit and caused school to be taught remotely? Baseball is a big thing (for me), I wanted to compete in a state championship. Academically, I was able to realize the goals I had set for myself.

What activities/groups/ sports have you been involved with? Baseball, playing football until I tore my ACL… I never

enough research about my desired career path to make sure it’s really something that I want to do, and making sure I spent every moment I could with classmates to make as many memories with them as I could. I was able to realize my goal of deciding where to attend college. After increasing my ACT score by four points in the Fall, I received a good scholarship from AUM, so that is where I plan to attend college. I am still able to research my desired career at home to make sure that it’s what I really want to do, but I’m almost certain that Computer Science is what I want to study. As for making as many memories with classmates as I could: the virus did cut it short, but I still believe that I made the most out of the time I was given.

What is affecting my emotions is quarantining and the fact that I no longer have the opportunity to see the familiar faces that I’m used to seeing on a daily basis. Being able to see the people that I grew up with and have been around for the last 14 years of my life in person ended earlier than expected, and I wish I would’ve done more with them throughout my senior year.

4

What were your emotions when you found out that you’d have to study from home the rest of the semester? Finding out that I had to study at home for the remainder of the semester didn’t actually affect my emotions.

What were your emotions when you found out that you’d have to study from home the rest of the semester?

5

What is your plan moving forward? My plan moving forward is to keep my head in the books and constantly give myself around-the-house tasks in order to stay distracted for the time being. I’m cutting out all of the fluff people are posting on social media about the current situation, but still paying attention to what’s important.

First, I was down because of baseball, but... God is in control and he has a plan for everything, so no need to worry about anything and he’s got it under control.

5

What is your plan moving forward? I plan on going to Auburn University and studying pre-med.

6

When you look back on this part of your life years from now, what do you think you’ll remember most? I will remember spending more time with family. My senior year was really busy, so now there’s nothing to do besides hang with family.

our graduating class aside from others and made us different. I’ve had an innumerable amount of people reaching out to me and other classmates reassuring us that we are not forgotten. This is something the Class of 2020 is definitely going to have to push through, but once it’s all said and done, I think it will definitely make us stronger. Some of us might be struggling with seeing a bright side to this, but in order to know what happiness really feels like, you have to experience sadness first.

What activities/groups/ sports have you been involved with? Fishing, cross country, track.

Going into your senior year, what were some goals you had for yourself? College, career etc.? Were you able to realize any of those before the virus hit and caused school to be taught remotely? Win AOY (Angler of the Year), Qualify for the high school National Championship, catch 200 pounds in a season, win a tournament, and win big fish in a tournament. I was able to accomplish four of these goals before school was taught remotely and right now I’m still trying to accomplish my last goal which is to catch 200 pounds in a season. I’m already halfway there but it is a lot harder now since I’m fishing against adults.

year was to have all A’s and B’s. Keep myself busy with schoolwork. Apply for as many scholarships as I could. I wanted to be able to know what plans I had for myself college wise and what path I would take to achieve it. To stay focus on my work regardless on how close I was to graduation. I’ve always wanted to be veterinarian so no matter what any of the teachers, counselors, or my parents said to me I never changed my mind, it always stuck with me. Yes I was, when the virus hit I actually had everything already planned out so nothing really changed for me as far

as having to send scholarships myself because I’m use to having my counselor do it for me. What were your emotions when you found out that you’d have to study from home the rest of the semester? I had mixed emotions mostly happy but sad because I know doing work and studying at home was already hard for me before the virus hit. ear OHS Class of 2020, On behalf of the Opelika High School faculty and staff, I want to congratulate you on reaching this milestone of high school graduation. This year has been unlike any other and you have displayed character and leadership throughout this experience. While historians will look back on this time and analyze the different medical and social aspects of COVID-19, my reflections will likely be different because of you. During this entire disruption to your senior year, my observations are that this entire senior class has embraced this time and found ways to make this a positive experience — focusing on the betterment of others, continuing to work hard in your coursework and sharpening leadership skills that will undoubtedly contribute to our community, state and world in a positive way. In this time of celebration, I urge you to reflect back on your high school experience — not just the last few months. I ask that you take the lessons learned, the content gained and most importantly, the relationships fostered, to shape the future in a way that represents you, your family and Opelika, in a powerful way. I can say, without reservation, that I am excited to see what the next chapter holds for you all. I encourage you to work hard in every endeavor you pursue and to seek opportunities to encourage others along life’s path. Please know that the Opelika High School family will always be here to help and will encourage you along the way. Go Dawgs! - Farrell Seymore

Letter from the Mayor Dear 2020 Graduates – “By facing our challenges and overcoming them, we grow stronger, wiser and more compassionate.” – John Templeton. Sir John Templeton was a businessman, a philanthropist and was deeply religious. He was an optimist, a believer in progress and a relentless questioner. And for that, he was hugely successful and lived a fulfilling life. You have now faced what is probably one of the BIGGEST challenges in your life – COVID-19. I know that your world has been turned upside down. What was to be your final year of high school was brought to an abrupt halt. Prom was cancelled. Athletics brought

to an end too soon. Testing for college applications cancelled. And most importantly, one of the biggest days of your life, high school graduation, will not take place. Through this, many of you may have felt ill-equipped to handle a sudden shift to online learning. You may have experienced a sense of isolation and frustration. Most definitely you missed your friends and family members. And, I’m sure you’ve heard incredibly sad stories about loss and despair. But because you’ve now been through this life altering situation, you are better suited to face life with strength, wisdom and compassion. Disappointment hurts. I ask that you accept how it feels and let it hurt for a while. Then refocus and start planning for your future. It’s here.

—56—

It’s now. There is a great big world out there waiting on you to join it. I know, without a doubt, that our school system and its incredible teachers have prepared you to do great things. Whether you move directly into the workforce, go to a two-year community college or jump right into a four-year

college, you are going to make your Opelika community proud. I wish you all the best. God bless you and your family. Best wishes, Mayor Gary Fuller

CONGRATULATIONS to the Opelika High School

Class of 2020!

We are so proud of you! www.opelikaschools.org "Educating Every Child, Every Day"

Opelika High School

we got paid for it - but I really enjoyed it and it was fun filming those.

3 }Amy Lowery How long have you been attending/going to Opelika High School? I’ve attended Opelika High School all four years. I went to Opelika Middle School (in the) seventh grade, (and) I’ve been at Opelika since.

1

2

What activities/groups/ sports have you been involved with? Freshman year, I was a majorette, and then sophomore year through senior year I filmed the football games… we have a school news, “the Kennel,” and I did that my junior year as well. I also filmed the football games, which was kind of like a job -

}Alexis Lawson How long have you been attending/going to this school? Four years.

1 2

What activities/groups/ sports have you been involved with? Art Club, HOSA, National honor society and the “Earn and Lear” program.

Going into your senior year, what were some goals you had for yourself? College, career etc.? Were you able to realize any of those before the virus hit and caused school to be taught remotely? One of my biggest things was just making sure that I keep my grades up and everything. Just get through it so I can go to a good college; I was still trying to figure out what I wanted to do after high school, but my biggest goal was with one of my classes: I loved the TV production side of [The Kennel] and I wasn’t in part of the school news for my senior year, but I did take a class — “Advanced Photo Editing” — and I just really wanted to do some cool photo projects with that. We did do a lot of cool stuff with it, it was very fun. We can’t continue with the TV-Photo editing class, we really haven’t got any information about it. It’s not too bad, I had a wonderful time in that class; it was just a semester or two, but it was a fun class, I enjoyed it and wish it could still be going on. But there’s

before the virus hit and caused school to be taught remotely? I was going to graduate May 22nd and have my last summer before I’m off to college and fulfilling my dreams of being into the health care system. I was going to become a manager at my part-time job when I graduated, which now I cannot because we don’t know when graduation is, which is heartbreaking.

4

What were your emotions when you found out that you’d have to study from home the rest of the semester?

—63—

nothing I can do at this point. I don’t think there’s anything we can do with it, like online classes, because it was pretty much hands-on.

4

What were your emotions when you found out that you’d have to study from home the rest of the semester? To be completely honest, my mom called me and my sister downstairs [and told us]. I legitimately ran upstairs and cried; I was really upset by it. I called a couple of my friends who were juniors, and then we had the senior group chat, so I got in that and was like “guys… um, who’s heard the news?” and we all talked about it.

5

What is your plan moving forward? I’ve already been accepted to AUM; I’ve already toured the outside, I haven’t been able to go in, but I’m

working with the admissions office to figure out about scholarships, and I’m also talking to Troy University and UAB. My big plan is just to be where I want to go and just try to figure out what is next, because it came so abruptly and faster than we thought. I’ve debated exactly what I want to do, but I know I want to do something within the psychology field.

6

When you look back on this part of your life years from now, what do you think you’ll remember most? I think I’ll honestly remember this time, but I mean, I’ll understand that I worked through it and that that made me cherish my time in high school a lot more, because it helped me realize nothing can last forever, I guess. You have to take the time that you have and honestly make the most of it.

I was devastated. I liked going to school every weekday and seeing faces that I’ve known all my life and I loved interacting within the community but now all it seems like we can do is stay home.

5 6

What is your plan moving forward? I will study hard and look forward not backwards and make the best of things. When you look back on this part of your life years from now, what do you think you’ll remember most? Not graduating on time.

Graduating Class of 20 20

2

What activities/groups/ sports have you been involved with? I’m President of Student Government Association (SGA), President of National Honor Society, 2019 Homecoming Queen. I’ve been involved with the varsity volleyball and basketball programs all four years of high school.

3 }Claire Worth How long have you been attending/going to this school? I’ve been attending Opelika City Schools since fifth grade!

1

Going into your senior year, what were some goals you had for yourself? College, career etc.? Were you able to realize any of those before the virus hit and caused school to be taught remotely? My goals for senior year included getting a full scholarship to play basketball, making all A’s, and winning a state championship in basketball.

Fortunately, I ended up getting a full scholarship to the University of Mobile and making all A’s. My team fell short in the final four this year but the virus did not affect our season.

4

What were your emotions when you found out that you’d have to study from home the rest of the semester? For the first week, I was pretty excited. I work at a local pharmacy in Opelika called Bubba’s Medicine Shop and with it being an essential business, we got to stay open. Therefore I got to work a lot of hours. When the school system announced that prom and graduation was up for grabs, it really made me sick to my stomach. And it made me realize how much I took for

—64—

granted while in high school. I really miss my peopleteachers, administrators and students.

5

What is your plan moving forward? My plan moving forward is to take online classes during this crazy time and get ahead for my future at Mobile.

6

When you look back on this part of your life years from now, what do you think you’ll remember most? I’ll definitely remember how this situation made me feel. I’ll remember the almost “fake” graduation we are going to have. I’ll definitely remember missing my senior prom, awards day and my signing day for college.

3 }Angel Chisolm How long have you been attending/going to this school? All four years.

1 2

What activities/groups/ sports have you been involved with? Basketball manager for senior year.

}Kaitlyn Goodman How long have you been attending/going to this school? I have attended Opelika City Schools for my entire life, and I wouldn’t have it any other way!

1

2

What activities/groups/ sports have you been involved with? I have been a part of the OHS Varsity soccer team since seventh grade. In high school, I joined the OHS majorette line and the Opelika High Theatre Society. My senior year, I had the privilege of being selected to serve as an OHS emissary and also served as one of our soccer captains. I am also a member of a variety of honor societies, including National Honor Society, Science National Honor Society, Spanish National Honor Society, Rho Kappa, and Mu Alpha Theta. During my years at OHS, I was involved with Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA), Key Club, Anchor Club, Spanish Club, Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA),

Going into your senior year, what were some goals you had for yourself? College, career etc.? Were you able to realize any of those before the virus hit and caused school to be taught remotely? Always wanted to go to the military, Navy specifically. Going to college under the military - main goal was to strive to make A’s and B’s. want to make my momma proud. I was able to meet these goals. I met with an officer recruiter and I ship out soon.

4

overwhelming. Over spring break, the virus got worse and we were out for the remainder of the year. I didn’t get to say goodbye to my favorite teachers and I didn’t get the full senior experience I wanted.

concerns with COVID-19, the initial thought was relief. It seemed to be an extended summer. However, once I started to consider the length of the break, I understood that I may not have a graduation ceremony or a senior prom. I won’t have a senior night for soccer or have the opportunity to lead my team to playoffs. I won’t get to hug some of my closest friends again. I don’t get to tell my favorite teachers the tremendous impact they’ve had on my life. And after considering all the things that would be lost with the school cancellation, I was overwhelmed with sadness and hopelessness. However, I believe the school cancellations were essential to ensure the health and safety of students, staff and the community.

What is your plan moving forward? For now, probably going to get a job and work for

3

Going into your senior year, what were some goals you had for yourself? College, career etc.? Were you able to realize any of those before the virus hit and caused school to be taught remotely? Luckily, I’ve had my plans for life after high school planned out for quite some time now. In the fall, I plan to attend Auburn University to pursue a degree in Nursing. I also have the honor to perform as a Tiger Eye with the Auburn University Marching Band as I was selected as a member of the Flagline. Although the coronavirus put a halt to my soccer season and high school studies, I am hopeful that all fall festivities will still get to happen.

What were your emotions when you found out that you’d have to study from home the rest of the semester? When I first found out that what was supposed to be Spring break turned into a semester break due to

5

—65—

What is your plan moving forward? Going into this summer, I hope to get lots of hours in at work. College is expensive, so I’d like to have as much money saved up as possible. I also in-

When you look back on this part of your life years from now, what do you think you’ll remember most? I’ll remember the virus the most. It ruined senior year. I’ll remember the teachers and late nights working hard.

tend on staying in shape and practicing for flagline.

When you look back on this part of your life years from now, what do you think you’ll remember most? When I look back on this stage in my life years from now, I hope that I will remember the memories made through my many years of OHS. Highfiving Coach Battle in the hallway everyday. Having lunch with my best friends. Leading the prayers prior to soccer games. I hope to reminisce on every hug, every laugh, every smile experienced at Opelika High School.

Graduating Class of 20 20

T

o the 2020 graduating class of Smiths Station High School You are a class of overcomers, survivors and thrivers. You have been through more than a class should have to go through, and yet you have come out on the other side as a group of individuals ready to take on the world. You have big dreams and goals. Nothing can stand in your way. This school year ended abruptly and not at all how we planned; however, you will become stronger from this just like you always do. It might not be the story you wanted, but it is YOUR story. So remember the good times; grow from the bad times. Go out and do the big things and know that your parents, teachers, family and friends are cheering you on. We are all so very proud of all you have accomplished and will accomplish. 1

How long have you been attending/going to Smiths Station? I have been a student of Smiths Station since kindergarten, which would be 13 years now.

2

What activities/groups/ sports have you been involved with? Throughout my years at Smiths Station, I have been heavily involved in school activities, sports. I have been on the yearbook staff at Smiths Station for the last six years and have been the editor-in-chief of the staff for four years. I am the president of Areophagus (the English Honor Society), the secretary of the National Honor Society, and the public relations officer of the Science National Honor Society. I am also a member of Rho Kappa (Social Studies Honor Society), Beta Club, Panther Athletics Leadership Organization, Quill and Scroll (Journalism Honor Society) and an FCA Leader (Fellowship of Christian Athletes).

This year, I was nominated to represent Smiths Station as the Journalism Candidate for Page One and the Young Citizens Awards which encouraged me to begin a website/blog for the city of Smiths Station. I am also a starting varsity defender for my high school soccer team. I have been playing soccer for nine years now; I played club soccer with CFC Red Star on the National level and have been playing for my high school soccer team for four years now.

3

Going into your senior year, what were some goals you had for yourself? College, career etc.? Were you able to realize any of those before the virus hit and caused school to be taught remotely? Going into senior year, I had multiple things on my to-do list that I wanted to complete. First and foremost, my grades were my top priority. With four advanced placement classes on my schedule along with being editor-in-chief of the yearbook staff, I knew I would spend a lot of time doing homework, studying, and editing pages while juggling both club and school soccer throughout the year. My goal was to maintain all A's throughout the year, which I was able to achieve with a 4.2 GPA. My second goal for the year was to produce an awardwinning yearbook, which I believe our staff accomplished despite the challenges we faced. Another priority/goal for myself was finding a col-

lege where I could further my education. I have decided to attend Troy University in the Fall of 2020 on a Chancellor's Scholarship where I plan on majoring in Graphic Design with an advertising minor. Although my senior year was cut short by COVID-19, I was able to accomplish many of the goals I had set for myself, including successfully creating a website for my hometown and winning the Young Citizens Awards Scholarship.

4

What were your emotions when you found out that you’d have to study from home the rest of the semester? When I had heard the news that school would be taught online for the remainder of the year, I could not believe it. The thought of not being able to spend the remainder of my high school "career" with my classmates, teachers, and teammates upset me. Not being able to say "good morning" to my two favorite teachers Mrs. Lee and Mrs. Hackney for the remainder of the year hurt me. We left school on a Friday afternoon thinking that we would all see each other that following Monday not knowing that it could have been the last time we saw each other. No formal goodbyes or farewells were said to one another, no lastminute hugs or pictures were taken. I will miss high school, as it was the best four years of my life, but I know it is part of a bigger plan.

—68—

5

What is your plan moving forward? From this point forward, I will continue to study for my A.P. exams which are coming up very soon. I am still hopeful for a traditional graduation ceremony, a friend-oriented prom, my senior trip that was unfortunately canceled due to these unprecedented events and prepare for college in the fall.

6

When you look back on this part of your life years from now, what do you think you’ll remember most? When I look back to my school years at Smiths Station, I think I will remember the friendships that were created and the teachers that mentored me into the person that I am today. I will forever be grateful for growing up in the Smiths Station community because I have friendships now that I know will last after I graduate. I had teachers that prepared me to live a successful life and who will stay in touch with me years after I have received my diploma. The family formed at Smiths Station has been through unimaginable events and still been able to bounce back stronger than before. I will remember the people the most; the ones who comforted each other during the death of students, the ones who came together to support each other after a tornado destroyed the community, the ones that would pray together in the mornings and the ones who can overcome anything when they stand together.

}Jackson Armstrong

What activities/ groups/sports have you been involved with? I have always been involved with football and played for Smiths Station ever since seventh grade.

3

Going into your senior year, what were some goals you had for yourself? College, career

Dear Graduates,

etc.? Were you able to realize any of those before the virus hit and caused school to be taught remotely? A major goal was to graduate, of course! But, I tried for A-B Honor roll and wanted to take my ASVAB to be able to get into the Coast Guard.

4

What were your emotions when you found out that you’d have to study from home the rest of the semester? I was really bummed due to the fact I would not be able to see some of my favorite people and teachers.

5

What is your plan moving forward? I was able to graduate early so now I plan to work hard to be prepared for basic training for the Coast Guard.

6

When you look back on this part of your life years from now, what do you think you’ll remember most? All the morning car jam sessions with Kaitlyn Davis and Bailey Banks. Also I’ll remember always laughing and having fun with my best friends at Sonic or at one of our fires.

Letter from the Mayor

There is no way to truly encapsulate the happenings of 2020 and the impact it has made on the lives of everyone, including our graduating seniors of Lee County. Seniors, I’m sure each and every one of you like myself at your age looked forward to the accomplishments, memories and happiness that this final chapter of your high school careers would bring. Thanks to COVID-19, many of those opportunities were stripped away from you all. However, even a worldwide pandemic cannot take away this tremendous accomplishment from you. Think of the numerous parents, principals, teachers and classmates who helped you get to this point and all the

hours of hard work and dedication you poured into your studies to help you earn this diploma. Those are memories that can never be taken away. Readers, as you flip through the pages of this publication, I hope you take that into consideration with all of the seniors pictured and listed here. They all have a story to tell, and each in their own way and timing are poised to go out into the world and make a difference for good wherever they are planted. My thoughts and prayers are with all of our county’s graduating seniors during these unique and challenging circumstances. May God lead each of you the chosen path that He has for you. Sincerely, F.L. “Bubba” Copeland

Trinity Christian School

}Rebekah Brown How long have you been attending/going to this school? I’ve attended Trinity for seven years. I started in sixth grade.

1

2

What activities/groups/ sports have you been involved with?

I’ve done volleyball, soccer, I’m a yearbook editor and I do Singer’s Choir… I’m in the Honors Society…

almost perfect it. But this year has kind of put a dent in that plan [laughs] so I haven’t been able to fully accomplish that goal. The yearbook was due April 3, so it was really crazy having to do Zoom meetings with my staff. It was insane, but… we’ve had to change a bunch of things, that’s not normal. The other one was soccer: I’ve been on the soccer team for a while now and I wanted this to be my best season; but, that’s over. Yeah… it’s crazy.

4

Going into your senior year, what were some goals you had for yourself? College, career etc.? Were you able to realize any of those before the virus hit and caused school to be taught remotely? Well, I think one of my biggest goals, there’s two of them: one was with the yearbook; I’ve been a yearbook editor for two years and last year, at the end of the year, my goal was to make the yearbook even better. As a leader, just trying my hardest to

What activities/groups/ sports have you been involved with? I have been involved in TCS Drama, Trinity Singers, Yearbook, and Honor Society.

3 }Lucy Ward How long have you been attending/going to this school? I have been attending Trinity since Kindergarten.

1

Going into your senior year, what were some goals you had for yourself? College, career etc.? Were you able to realize any of those before the virus hit and caused school to be taught remotely? Going into my senior year, my goals were to graduate high school and then pursue higher education at Auburn University.

What were your emotions when you found out that you’d have to study from home the rest of the semester? For right now, Trinity has not cancelled school altogether, I think they’ve extended that to April 30, but right now, I have friends in other schools and I know what they’re going through, being seniors too. I’m holding onto that hope that we’ll be able to go back and just have a normal end of the senior year, but I’m already feeling like this is bigger, I guess. Just sadness that… I feel like we lost a lot

What were your emotions when you found out that you’d have to study from home the rest of the semester? I was pretty disappointed when I found out the news. I felt like I was being robbed of my last moments with my class before we graduated and parted ways.

5

What is your plan moving forward? My plan moving forward is to enjoy this summer to the best of my ability while also preparing for college in the fall.

6

When you look back on this part of your life years from now, what do you

—74—

in this senior year, and it’s hard to find that happiness and joy.

5

What is your plan moving forward? I’m attending Southern Union and I’m going to major in early-childhood education. My dream career is to be a stay-at-home mom; I know that sounds kind of crazy, I just want to be a homemaker.

6

When you look back on this part of your life years from now, what do you think you’ll remember most? I think one thing that I want to remember is, whenever I look back, I want to see that I did not waste this time. It’s hard not to complain a lot, but I just want to look back and see how God actually moved in my life and used this opportunity to make me grow and be intentional with other people, with my friends and with people I haven’t talked to in years. I think that’s what I want to remember the most — I want to make this time count, make this moment count. think you’ll remember most? I think I’ll probably remember the quality time that I am getting to spend with my family the most.

}Juliet Nell How long have you been attending/going to this school? I began attending Trinity in third grade. Before that, I was homeschooled by my mom.

1

2

What activities/groups/ sports have you been involved with? I have been a part of the tennis team, Honor Society, and the concert and jazz bands.

3

Going into your senior year, what were some goals you had for yourself? College, career etc.? Were you able to realize any of those before the virus hit and

caused school to be taught remotely? One of the biggest goals I was able to reach was adequately studying for my standardized tests and getting my target ACT score, because that had to happen before anything else in the college application process. I was able to finish all of the college-related goals I had, like applying and being accepted to Auburn and applying for scholarships. There are some fun senior traditions that the pandemic has caused me to miss out on, but thankfully all of the requirements for going to Auburn I either had done already or can do remotely. A goal unique to Trinity seniors is the rhetoric speech we give near the end of the year, and even though our rhetoric day looks different this year, being quarantined at home has allowed me to put more time and effort into my speech than I would have normally. My last big goal was to give it, and our teachers figured out a way for us to do that while still practicing social distancing. I’m thankful that all of my important senior goals could

happen at least in some way or another.

4

What were your emotions when you found out that you’d have to study from home the rest of the semester? I was pretty glad for the more relaxed schedule and opportunity to do personal things that I couldn’t do during a regular spring semester, but there were definitely some things I was sad to miss. I knew I would miss my class especially and all of the small senior things that we wouldn’t get to do together. It was definitely surreal to think that the day before spring break was the last day I’d ever wear a Trinity uniform, and I wished that I could finish out my senior tennis season and perform the last band concert. But pretty soon into quarantine I told my friend how sad I was about missing those things, and she surprised me with a great quilt she made with Trinity t-shirts from over the years, which helped me feel a lot better about everything!

5

What is your plan moving forward? My plan is to finish out the semester as best I

can in the next couple of weeks and just see where the summer takes me. I’ll be doing final college preparations like Camp War Eagle remotely but I hope that I’ll be able to spend some time with friends before everyone goes to college, if social distancing lets up a bit. I know it won’t be a normal summer, but I plan on enjoying it as best I can and making it as normal as possible. I’m definitely hoping for a normal freshman year, but that’s not guaranteed at all, so overall I just plan on staying safe and making the best of whatever has to happen.

6

When you look back on this part of your life years from now, what do you think you’ll remember most? I think I’ll remember the lessons I learned about selfdiscipline and using my time well, because that really has been a blessing of social distancing. Probably most of all, and I’m sure this is true for a lot of people, I’ll remember to value face-to-face interaction and all of my everyday freedoms that I normally take for granted.

I have been homeschooled since the fourth grade.

What activities/groups/sports have you been involved with?

I have been involved in the East Alabama Children’s Choir and the East Alabama Youth Chorale for the past five years. I also took piano for seven years. I have also served in many church events such as VBS and other children activities and various volunteer activities. I was also involved in many bible studies and small groups. 3

Going into your senior year, what were some goals you had for yourself? College, career etc.? Were you able to realize any of those before the virus hit and caused school to be taught remotely?

Going into senior year, my goals were to complete my dual-enrollment classes at Southern Union and have at least a 3.5 GPA. My other goals were to go to senior prom and have a great senior choir concert. The virus has greatly impacted every goal that I had. It took away going to the Southern Union campus and seeing my friends almost

go look at the college due to the virus.

Homeschool Seniors

What is your plan moving forward? My plan moving forward is to work over the summer and fall. Lord willing, I will be able to attend Highlands College to get a degree in ministry in the spring.

5

When you look back on this part of your life years from now, what do you think you’ll remember most? Looking back, I will definitely remember my high school years the most. I grew a lot in my relationship with Jesus over the last four years. I have experienced God’s miraculous power and love in so many ways! I have also made some wonderful friendships that I hope last for years to come! everyday. It also has taken away senior prom and a senior choir concert. I had also planned to go to a preview day at Highlands College in Birmingham in April but the virus also stopped us from going to that as well. The virus has also prevented me from hanging out with my friends before everyone goes to college.

4

What is your plan moving forward?

I plan on completing my basic academic classes at Southern Union while I am trying to decide what career path I want to take. I am praying and waiting for God to show me what He wants me to do with the gifts that He has given me. I also plan on getting a job somewhere this summer.

5

When you look back on this part of your life years from now, what do you think you’ll remember most?

When looking back at high school, I hope to remember all the fun memories. Not just the big moments but also the little ones. The countless game nights and movie nights I had with my friends. Staying out late and eating Cook Out or Chick Fil A with my fellow choir members to celebrate a great concert. The great relationships that
