Merrick Chamber Invites Resident To Help Keep The Lights On!! The Annual Fall Festival brought out many residents to enjoy the magnificent weather. This is always a special time of year to renew old friendships and catch up with the neighbors with whom you haven’t seen in a while. This year’s festival opening ceremony, began with the Calhoun Concert Choir singing the National Anthem. Followed by the Chamber announcement of their new community resident membership. The fee is just $25.00 per homeowner and residents may learn more and sign up on the chamber website www.merrickchamber.org. The Chamber hosts two festivals, a Halloween Parade, Santa’s visit and annual Holiday Lighting Ceremony. “There are several projects which the Merrick Chamber must undertake
in order to beautify the town,” said Chamber President Femy Aziz. “The sign at the LIRR trestle, needs replacement as well as the ‘Welcome to Merrick’ sign at the corner of Merrick Avenue and Sunrise Highway. Two major expenses. Our Board has been toying with a difficult decision. Grants from
the elected officials have been slow in coming, and the Chamber’s budget cannot afford both as well as the Holiday Lights Program. [CONT. ON PAGE 8]

One For The Record Books By Randi Satnick
erusing the newly painted, cataloged and expanded North Bellmore Library, one quickly notes its remarkable transformation. The once ramshackle structure in need of repair and bursting at the seams is now, post renovation, a spacious beacon of information, inspiration and entertainment to an excited and proud community. The community at large showed its support with a standing room only attendance at the library’s Bellmore Chamber of Commerce ribbon cutting ceremony. Many came to also bid farewell to the library’s esteemed and beloved, long-time director, Thomas Bazzicalupo who completed 28 years of service.
dent, Barbara Cavuto, began using the old library when her daughter was 3 years old. Now, twenty-five years later, Jenna Cavuto has purchased only 1 book since she sources the library so frequently. Barbara and her now adult children, Jenna and Jimmy found Tom always ready with a greeting and eager to help. Fiorella Ferranti and her 5-1/2 year old daughter, Giuliana are ecstatic that the new children’s section houses all her favorites including the complete Elephant & Piggie series, which is recommended for pre-kindergarteners. “This new library has them all,” Fiorella marvels. Tom highlighted the expanded space in the children’s room including an activity room for story-time and
Known to loyal staff and the greater community as Tom, the veteran director beamed with pride as he pointed out various areas of the multi-level and multi-functional space. Tom was an integral part of bringing the dream of a new library to life since it’s inception during library board meetings that began in 2013. Barbara Fillios, the library board’s longest standing member, credits the director for doing a lot to make it happen. “Tom is a team player,” said Barbara. “He is also a great listener and an all around nice guy. We were very lucky to have him for as long as we did. We’re going to miss him,” she added. Thomas Bazzicalupo, who always thought he’d be a school teacher, began children’s story-time at the library in 1991. One of his greatest joys was to have an attendee return years later as an adult to visit. North Bellmore resi-
crafting as well as a screen for movies. He notes the addition of Ipads and the creation of a designated area for children with special needs including a place for parents to sit, read and observe. Tom and his wife, also a librarian, just celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary and will move to North Carolina with their now grown family of three children. He joked that while at work he was always complaining of being cold and yearned for warmth. His complaints were substantiated once his old office walls were demolished and a lack of insulation validated his woes! He also joked that he hadn’t yet been shown how to adjust the air conditioning in the renovated space. So, despite newly insulated walls, he was still freezing! Coworkers, like Jessica Tymecki, interim Library Director, hope his move to the

south will provide the warmth the respected director seeks. Tymecki notes the legacy Tom leaves behind. “He has the kindest heart and a true respect and love for the staff and community of the North Bellmore Library. He worked many years to make this renovation happen,” she explained. Jessica was raised in North Bellmore and was a student of the Newbridge Road Elementary School, located right next door to the library. As a child she attended story time at the library and participated in the Summer Reading Club every year. For the past twelve years she has been Head of Young Adult Services. Jessica instituted a SEPTA collection to support patrons with special needs and a video game collection for teens. The latter is one of the largest collections in Nassau County and appeals to the demographic she serves. Like Tom, Jessica is elated that her targeted audience has a designated area in their new home, which includes a study room and a hangout space. Tom, Jessica, staff and the board credit Ray Beeler, architect of the new library, for listening intently and creating an edifice that houses more than just books. It is truly a community center. Michael Reed oversaw construction and worked closely with staff to create a space with south facing windows that bathes the inside with light. The new library, with its additional 4,500 square feet, boasts the latest technology, an elevator, IT room, storage room, book mending area, musical CD’s, DVD’s, large circulation desk, projection room, 10 public computers, innovation room with 3-D printers and a sewing machine. A community room with a capacity of 158 will host outside groups and shows. A fireplace was installed as a focal point in the adult section, behind which a marketplace room of snacks invites patrons to stay a while. “I now want to come and stay,” said one such patron, “rather than
get a book and leave!” Despite the challenges, since the board first accrued a bond for the renovation in 2015, the new library has exceeded everyone’s dream. Prominently featured in the entryway are showcases that are a proud nod to the building’s history. Original floor plans and pieces of an old mural are just a few of the relics displayed. Tom Bazzicalupo contributed items to the time capsule found within the demolished walls. An old iphone was added along with a library newsletter for future generations to discover. However, Tom Bazzicalupo’s,imprint is as much a part of the
present library as the brick and mortar and books within. Bazzicalupo’s parting words thanked everyone for their support. “You always seemed to find us somehow. Lakeside Students’ Service Shines Bright at the ‘Glow of Hope’ Students from Levy Lakeside School in Merrick who participate in yearlong service projects through the school’s service learning program were recently invited to share their experiences at the Nassau County “Glow of Hope” reception. The event served as a special kickoff to Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Lakeside students spoke about past and future efforts. Several of their service projects focused on the 1 in 9 Hewlett House, while others helped children with terminal illnesses. One grade level worked to ensure that Lakeside’s own incoming Kindergarteners were welcomed with open arms. The audience included Nassau County Executive Laura Curran, Hewlett House Director Geri Barish, Lakeside Principal Libby Trencheny and Assistant Principal Justin Gabrus. Hundreds of family members and friends were present to support the Lakeside Lions– the students who provide service to help others. Also in atten-
dance were many of the Lakeside teachers including, student council adviser Soo Becchina. These teachers provided the support students needed in order to carry out their creative service projects. Hewlett House is a community learning resource center for cancer patients and their families that has served tens of thousands of cancer patients and their families. Last year, Lakeside Students created inspirational tissue boxes for the patients of the Hewlett House, and student council members also beautified the grounds and nurtured the vegetable garden there, an annual tradition.

Fran Eckman Salt and pepper your meat. Brown 2 lbs stew meat in cast iron skillet. Put meat in crock pot or regular pot. Add one onion to pan after meat comes out. Stir for a few minutes. Put in pot. Deglaze pan with red wine and add to pot. Cut up 4-5 carrots and potatoes and add to pot. Then cover with 4 cups stock or beef broth. Also add 1/2 can tomato paste,1 bayleaf, about 1 tsp sage. Stir and cover. Cook for 6-7 hours in the crock pot on high. The last hour throw in some frozen green beans and peas. I used 1/2 bag of each. Thicken with flour last 1/2 hour if needed. If you are making this on top of the stove simmer 3 hours until meat is tender. Crock pot is easiest.

Add onion and sautée until golden. Add carrots, celery and green pepper; saute 3 minutes longer. Stir and blend in flour. Add broth, pumpkin and parsley. Bring to a boil Stir until smooth. Cover and simmer for 30 minutes. Season to taste.

• Vanilla sugar 10gr • Baking powder 10gr packet • Apples 4( depending on the size) • Powdered sugar Use mixer to beat 3 eggs and sugar until fluffy consistency then add sour cream, oil, vanilla and mix it again with the hand mixer. Then add flour and baking powder sifted into the mixture and mix gently by hand so there is no knots. Peel and core 2 to 3 apples, cut into small pieces and add to mixture. Mix in well. Prepare spring form line with paper and grease the sides. Pour mixture in the form. Take another couple of apples and just core them and cut into slices and decorate the top. Bake at 365F for about an hour. Sprinkle powdered sugar on top once it is cooled off.

Meet St Francis New Pastor Chris McNabb By Br. Chris McNabb
I
’m delighted to have been named the new pastor of St. Francis Episcopal Church in North Bellmore. St. Francis is a merger between Christ the King (East Meadow) and St. Mark’s (North Bellmore). You might know us as the home to the Garden at St. Francis, which provides fresh, local and healthy produce. Veterans, Senior Citizens, and WIC recipients can receive vouchers through the State of New York to receive free fresh veggies! Any extra produce is donated to local folks who struggle with food insecurity. Prior to serving here at St. Francis, I attended seminary in New York City and served as a priest in Princeton, NJ. In addition to my responsibilities at the parish, I began a ministry to paramedics/EMT’s and worked with immigrant communities & refugees. I take seriously the belief that we are all made in God’s image and likeness – as such, I
believe that every person deserves dignity and respect. As an expression of this belief, we are an open and affirming congregation, meaning we accept all members of the LGBTQ community. We also encourage leadership from all members of our congregation. In fact, our Vestry (church board) is entirely female! You’re always welcome to worship with us on Sundays at 9:30am or come visit our farm stand from 11am-2pm from June-October. We’re also always looking for volunteers in our garden! Kennedy Sisters Make School History
T
he John F. Kennedy High School cross-country girls team in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District made school history on Oct. 10 when two female athletes broke 20 minutes in the same 5k race. Sisters Marissa Spottiswood and Maya Spottiswood both came in under 20 minutes, taking first and second place, respectively, with a big personal best for Maya at the league meet. Coach Chris Mammone said, “it has been so much fun” watching these two compete in every race.“They are two of the top girls in Nassau County and anytime they toe the starting line, there are big things to come,” he added.

Port Authority Officer Runs For Town Council
C
hristopher Carini has been named the Republican, Conservative, Independence and Tax Revolt candidate for the 5th Councilmanic District in the Town of Hempstead. Carini is a Port Authority police officer, and will be retiring from the Port Authority Police Force to dedicate all of his energies to help the communities that comprise the south shore council district. Carini was selected to replace former Councilwoman Erin King Sweeney on the ballot after the former town official resigned her position as a result of her husband’s business relocation out-of-state Carini will challenge Democrat Lora Webster of Point Lookout. Christopher Carini is the vice president of the Wantagh-Seaford Homeowners’ Association and has spearheaded a host of community enhancement and neighborhood safety initiatives. He persuaded the LIRR and MTA to remediate graffiti at the local train
stations and successfully advocated for more policing at the stations, repair of broken escalators as well as enforcement of quality-of-life issues at the commuting centers. Carini also helped establish a community watch to combat neighborhood burglaries and other crimes. He assisted in bringing about safety and security enhancements in local schools and serves on the Nassau County Police Commissioner’s Community Council. “I have really enjoyed serving my community and working to maintain it as a safe and desirable place in which to live, work and raise a family,” stated Carini. “Working to help area homeowners is something to which I am dedicated, and as a Town councilman, I will be able to do even more.”
