The project is envisioned as a 33-storey office tower with a total above-grade building area of 61,000 square meter. The tower consists of multiple, stepping volumes which culminate in a angled metal and glass crown. Juxtaposed to its surroundings in the skyline, the tower massing distinguishes the building and adds to the excitement of the view, while the vertical volumes fit comfortably on the site and in its surrounding context. At the ground level, a vaulting glass lobby is recessed from the volumes allowing the tower walls to hover above the ground plane, adding architectural interest at grade.

1133 Melville will provide a significant contribution to the public realm through the introduction of a major mid-block thoroughfare, improved Melville Streetscape, and a significant amount of at-grade retail. The thoroughfare will contain a water wall, public plaza area, planted green wall, seating for the envisioned cafÊ, and a generous walkway designed to meet community goals for accessibility and connectivity. The project will achieve a high level of sustainability and will fully comply with the Rezoning Policy for Sustainable Large Developments. The project will achieve LEED Gold and target LEED Platinum and will support the City’s objective for carbon neutrality for new buildings.

LE LYCÉE DE L’ILE DE NANTES NANTES, FRANCE

RESPONSIBILITY : INTERIOR , FACADE DESIGN, ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES

“The high school of the future”, proposed by the region of Loire, is a new center for teaching the next generation of Nantes. The school is a prototype to break the boundaries of rigid traditional education and increase the multi-lateral exchanges between systems as well as within the institution. The design expresses such ambitions through its form and sustainable technologies. In this scheme, energy will be provided mainly by solar, wind power and the national distribution grid. Energy consumption is additionally reduced by combining natural ventilation and passive energy design. During the summer recess, the school programs are limited, the produced surplus energy will be fed back through the main grid. The building’s architecture is sculpted with subtlety and elegance, adding a unique landmark to the urban space.

ACADEMIC WORK

ENERGETIC SURFACES

In northern Sardinia, the importance of the coastline was augmented with an increasing number of tourists, in addition to the Mediterranean oil routes which brought the island economic independence. Porto Torres has become an industrial city, with chemical and petrochemical plants served by a port with a turnover of 2.6 million tons annually. However, a crisis in the energy sector led to a gradual mobilization of workers. Situated in between major resort areas, the port is undergoing an expansion to welcome passenger ships, commercial vessels, and the marina. The project began with research on current trends in various renewable energy resources and the concept of microgrids, small scale power generation networks to supply electrical or thermal output on demand. Incorporating climatic data, the formal investigation focused on the creation of parameterized networks in which various topological intensities demonstrate the idea of decentralizing, multilateral relationships among nodes to reflect the idea of rejuvenation in parts of an industrial area that is no longer in use.

ACADEMIC WORK

GRADIENT PRESSURE

First objective of this project is to develop an interstitial form which manifests the gradient of various environmental pressures existing in both global and local scale. At a global level, our research focuses on how land use is related to the urban heat island effect. The site proposed is an old Sugar Factory, located on the East River bank in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. The area has changed from a forgotten industrial area to a progressive art scene in late 80’s, and very quickly become an affluent homogeneous residential area. Formal investigation continued through particle simulations in which two sets of populations find their balance by changing each others behavior, numbers and life spans. The proposed scenario anticipates the functions of two remaining buildings to be the catalysts for revitalizing production, commerce, and exchange between cultures at the water front. Solving all the social and environmental issues is somewhat out of our scope; however, collected data directly feeds into morphology of a form. Techniques such as scripting, computer modeling, laser cutting, analysis of solar load etc. – were used to test the form and results were visualized with the form itself and surface tessellations.
