HOLD ME CLOSE

Design by Yarn by Verena Cohrs L‘Échappée Laine

A cardigan with set-in sleeves, a shawl collar and lots of texture; one that would work no matter whether you prefer it close-fitted or oversized; that‘s what Verena set out to create with Hold Me Close. It comes two button band options and - as with all our garments - instructions on how to modify the length to your liking. We‘ve photographed it on both Malte and Verena in the same size to show you how it could look like - but obviously, it‘s entirely up to you to determine how you want your finished piece! The sheepy and warm L‘Échappée Laine yarn we‘ve used in this design shows off the twisted cables beautifully, and keeps you warm, no matter whether you‘re wearing it over PJs or out and about.

NEAR AND FAR

Design by Hanna Lisa Haferkamp

Yarn by Triskelion Yarn

A pair of socks to wear in sturdy shoes, to pull on after a long day at work, to peak out from boots. A pattern engaging enough to steer us away from second sock syndrome, yet easy enough to memorize to make for good Netflix or knit night knitting. This idea led to the Near and Far socks for this collection: A center panel of reverse stockinette provides the background for a large-scale cable that expands and contracts along the length of the foot. It‘s framed by two smaller cables, and leads seamlessly into the cuff‘s ribbing. Triskelion Yarn‘s Scylfing DK provided the perfect sturdy and warm sock yarn for this pattern. At a DK weight they knit up quickly, and will keep your feet extra warm, no matter whether you‘re wearing them out and about or inside on a cold night.

TRUST ME

Design by Clare Mountain

Yarn by Echoview Fiber Mill

A textured crewneck pullover with set-in sleeves - that was our design brief for Clare‘s Trust Me sweater, and just look at the beauty she came up with! All-over garter rib is combined with undulating cables both on the front and the back of the sweater. The cable is repeated in the sleeves, running down their sides before ending in a classic ribbed cuff. Echoview Fiber Mill‘s Fair Isle Merino shows off both cables and texture beautifully, and comes in a range of colours that - we think - will help you create a pullover that works with everything in your wardrobe.

MEMORIES

Design by Yarn by Marie Greene Fleece & Harmony

A hat to keep you company through the ups and downs of friendship, of life, really; a hat that serves as a memory keeper and memory creator; a hat that keeps you warm, day in and day out. Marie Greene‘s Memories with its all-over textured pattern that gently twists into the crown decreases and its slouchy shape surely delivers on all these fronts. It‘s designed for Fleece & Harmony Light Fingering, a very special farm yarn from Canada, and plays beautifully with the light tonal variation in the colorway shown in the sample.

COMMON GROUND Design by

Jessica Gore

Yarn by O-Wool

Texture for days, proportions that work incredibly well no matter which fit you prefer, and extremely thoughtful details - that sums up Jessica‘s Common Ground cardigan quite accurately, we think. She combined a deep V-neck with an all-over stitch pattern for both the front and the back of the cardigan and close-fitting ribbed sleeves. The top-down raglan construction makes it easy to customize body and sleeve lengths, and O-Wool‘s light grey yarn provides the perfect backdrop for all of these elements to come together in a wardrobe staple.

KEEPING YOU WARM

Design by Hanna Lisa Haferkamp

Yarn by Garthenor

For her first sweater design, Hanna Lisa was inspired by Art Nouveau lines and the desire to create a modern, geometric colourwork yoke. The neck shaping used in Keeping You Warm lets the neckline sit slightly higher at the back, while the top-down construction allows you to knit it exactly to the dimensions you prefer. Garthenor‘s DK-weight yarn was a match made in heaven with its excellent properties for colourwork and beautiful natural shades - a joy to knit with!

OPEN ARMS

Design by Rebekka Mauser

Yarn by Abundant Earth Fiber

Scarves evoke a lot of memories for most knitters: Chances are, they‘re how we learned to knit, so many of us have very fond memories associated with long lengths of fabric, created by the steady back and forth on, most likely, straight needles. Rebekka took our idea for a modern, super wearable scarf and twisted it on its head: Knit horizontally, her design combines subtle stripes of different textures, keeping it interesting to knit and fantastic to wear. Add a bit of fringe, and the saltand-pepper tones of Abundant Earth Fiber‘s Josef & Anni base, and you got yourself a new wardrobe staple!

BASELINE Design by Yarn by Verena Cohrs The Fibre Co.

Baseline, Verena‘s second contribution to Making Stories & Friends Winter 2018, was inspired by the wish to design a pullover that could serve as as a trusted companion, a stable part of your wardrobe that works well with all fit and style preferences. Two-coloured stripes are set off by wide bands of ribbing at the cuffs and hem, and a corresponding neckband that sits just a tiny bit wider than a crewneck. The Fibre Co.‘s Arranmore Light that we used for this design lets the fabric drape beautifully, and with their striking range of colours, we‘re sure you‘re going to find a combination that‘ll make knitting Baseline an absolute joy.

GROWING CLOSE

Design by Yarn by Sari Nordlund Knitting For Olive

For the times when you a) want to knit a slightly smaller, yet incredibly engaging and fun project, b) want to keep your head warm and make a tiny bit of a statement, c) just want a beautiful hat in your life, might we suggest Sari‘s Growing Close? Bobbles, diamonds and cables meet a squishy folded brim and thoughtful details such as a tubular cast-on and an optional pompom in this design. Knitting For Olive‘s yarn make the design elements on the hat stand out even more with its excellent stitch definition. Plus, pompoms made out of it are among the squishiest we‘ve ever touched!

CROSSING PATHS

Design by Yarn by Verena Cohrs Blacker Yarns

Verena‘s third design for this collection is a riff on one of her favourite clothing items: A turtleneck sweater! Garter lines, rib and broken rib textures work together in Crossing Paths to create a beautiful all-over textured garment. Thoughtful details are Verena‘s trademark, and she implements them beautifully here: The raglan lines flow seamlessly into the sleeve‘s texture, and the fact that you work the turtleneck last allows you to make it however long you want it. (Same for the body and sleeves, thanks to the topdown construction!) Blacker Yarns‘ Swan is a wonderful backdrop for all of this squishy texture and we can‘t wait to see your version!

HOLDING HANDS Design by

Claire Walls

Yarn by Swans Island Company

As the temperatures drop in the Northern hemisphere, we keep thinking about mittens. Mittens that can keep our hands warm, yet allow for flexibility with our fingers, for pulling out our phone when we need to, for tightening shoe laces and paying at the grocery store. Our friend Claire Walls took this desire and molded it into the three variations of her pattern: One is a classic mitten, another a pair of fingerless gloves, and the third a mix of both with a buttoned flap. A thumb gusset, two cuff lengths, and a swath of garter stitch ensure that no matter which variation you knit, they‘ll fit you perfectly and will keep your hands toasty warm all winter long. Swans Island‘s All-American Sport Yarn is both soft and sturdy, and will make sure that your mittens make it through countless winters to come. Holding Hands
