2022-23 IMPACT REPORT

THANK YOU for your support!

MESSAGE FROM THE CEO DEAR MAKING WAVES COMMUNITY, Welcome to the Making Waves Academy Impact Report for the 2022-23 academic year. 2022-23 was the second full school year of in-person learning following the year of remote instruction. Overall, we saw some improvements while experiencing some persistent challenges. The aim of this report is to highlight areas of success, growth, and impact.

RESILIENCE AND ROUTINES Of the five school values, Resilience stands out as the overriding theme for 2022-23. Strengthening Routines, Expectations, and Procedures was a critical goal in helping to support an effective in-person learning environment. We aimed for the school year to be as “normal” as possible – hosting dances and community meetings, having spirit week, and having 12th grade graduation and 8th grade promotion ceremonies on campus.

HERE ARE SOME GROWTH HIGHLIGHTS • Attendance: We saw material increases in our average daily attendance. • Academic growth: Some class cohorts showed very strong growth on the state tests. • Seniors and college admissions: This was one of the strongest years of any senior class in terms of cumulative GPAs and college admissions.

LOOKING AHEAD Coming out of the pandemic, we are looking to be strategic and opportunistic in evolving our model. Examples include critically examining our instructional practices and the levels of investment in some of our approaches. We will have medium and long-term success by focusing on strengthening our foundation in the areas of talent, leadership, family partnership, and fidelity to instructional best practices. We will look back on the 2022-23 school year as a pivotal year during which Making Waves Academy began to “turn the ship” toward an even stronger and more impactful future.

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT

“ “ “

My time at Making Waves Academy was full of growth,” shared Juritzy Mata.

Juritzy enrolled at Making Waves Academy when she was in 5th grade and credits the school with helping her build her leadership skills as a part of student government and with setting her on an early path of exploring her college and career options.

Making Waves also gave me a community I could always count on.”

The first in her family to graduate from college, Juritzy went on from Making Waves Academy to earn her degree from Cal Poly Pomona in 2023 with scholarship and coaching support from Making Waves Education Foundation.

My goal has always been to return to my community and recycle my success, like Making Waves taught me.”

I am excited to pursue a career that combines my passion for creative marketing and my desire to make a positive impact.”

Juritzy, who recently completed a marketing internship at Making Waves, is also excited to see her brother and three of her nephews follow in her footsteps at Making Waves Academy.

I am truly grateful for everyone who donates to Making Waves.”
