Publishers Note Hard to believe it’s been four years already but here we are. For everyone who has been with us from the beginning and even those that joined us along the way, I want to start by saying Thank You! Amazingly our little magazine, which happens to be built on the intersection of two ailing industries (Music and Publishing), continues to flourish and grow each and every year. We’ve come a very long way from that first black and white, four-paged newsletter. Together we’ve transitioned into color, then later to full gloss. We’ve expanded our page count and then our distribution, until Makin’ It Magazine could be found in over 100 markets across North America. Throughout all this growth our staff has re-

mained pretty much a one-man (sometimes two-man) operation. So understand that when I refer to Makin’ It Magazine as “We” that I’m not referring to a Peachtree St. office staffed with writers, photographers and receptionist. I’m referring to YOU. Makin’ It Magazine is more than a company and it’s far more than a magazine. At the risk of sounding clichéd, it is in fact a movement. Every artist, producer, DJ, manager, entrepreneur and industry professional that has ever purchased a magazine or subscription is a stockholder. Our investors are our advertisers. Our promotions department is led by your Retweets, Likes & Shares. Our marketing strategy is fueled by the burning desire to answer your questions and solve the problems that you face. Our mission state-

ment is not to help you get a deal but to help you make a living doing something you love, whether that’s DJing, Producing, Writing, Singing, Rapping or something on the business end of the spectrum. In an industry where so many people expect something for nothing, we’ve thrived by adhering to our motto, “Support those that support you.” It is my belief that any resource that could be given away would be better spent over-delivering to those who actively support and have nurtured our growth. For me, it’s not about doing something big; it’s about doing something GREAT. So, here’s to year number five. Thank you for your support and may we continue to grow together! -- Kelby Cannick, CEO

Bigg Page by C. Whitfield

Since breaking out success of his 2009 single, “Still Fly” featuring Drake, Bigg Page has been penning songs and slaying every track that is laid in his path. Hard at work in the studio for his new project, Things Young Ppl Do (#TYPD), He explains that his music is about chasing a dream; It’s about being locked up in the prison of our computer screen; It’s about rollin’ with gangster girls and rockin’ out at parties with bottles of whatever.

York, LA, Atlanta, and Miami, he has logged hours in the studio with the likes of Max B, Brisco, Bobby Valentino, and Poe Boy to deliver what he deams to be real and honest new school hip hop. Though 2010 saw Page nominated for a Juno Award alongside Drake and U.G.O. Crew for their collaboration on the still Fly Remix, Page takes even greater pride in the work he is doing to coordinate his non profit organization, Turn the Page. Fabolous Vs. @MyFabolousLife by C. WHitfield

With his newest single “You Be Killing Em” racking up over 3,000 spins a week at radio, Fabolous always manages to stay relevant in Hip Hop. But even with a string of successful singles under his belt that span over the past decade and a discography that boasts nothing but Gold and Platinum plaques, it just seems that Fabolous never got the media attention you would associate with an artist of his calibre. Maybe it’s something about his cool mellow demeanor that never made most associate the word “megastar” with his name. It could just as easily be that he’s too laid back in pictures or too soft spoken with he spits. I’ve even heard the argument in idol barbershop coversation that “He makes dope records but who wants to see him on an episode of Cribs.” Whatever it is, I probably would’ve been prone to agree until I met @MyFabolousLife. Better than any other rapper, I feel Fabolous has leveraged twitter to become more than just another dope MC. It has made him entertaining, humorous and someone that you’d like to kick it with because they’re cool not because they’re famous. Twitter has exposed a personality not seen in his lyrics nor even tapped into by a major label public relations staff. With over 900,000 followers and dozens of trending topics to his credit, his tweets have ended up as headlines on blogs across the internet. Unlike other internrun, celebrity twitter accounts where every other tweet is about selling their product (liquor, clothes, CDs, etc) Fabolous has done an excellent job at selling his brand. With the impending release of Loso’s Way 2, I believe his brand will do an excellent job at selling some CDs. @MakinItMag: @MyFabolousLife Hope to see you at #1 on the Billboard Charts. RT #MakinIt

Sean Kingston: Young Mogul by C. WHitfield

Since being discovered on Myspace back in 2007 by Tommy Rotem (VP of A&R for Belugah Heights), Jamaican singer/rapper Sean Kingston has been grinding non-stop. Soaking up the business at a very young age, he started his own label, Time Is Money Entertainment, alongside brother Kirk Kingston. In 2008 Sean discovered and signed R&B/Reggae singer Iyaz through MySpace. In less than 3 months of its release, Iyaz’s debut Single “Replay” shot to the top of the charts and was shortly after certified as tripple platinum. When not busy penning hits for stars like Ciara, Rihana, Ke$ha or Jason Derulo, you’ll catch Sean on tour, recently spending a lot of time in Canada rocking sold out concerts with Justin Bieber. At a recent Toronto show featuring Danny Fernandes and the UGO Crew, Sean introduced the latest addition to the TIME family, Toronto native, Tory Lanez. Having already made a few waves of his own in the industry, Lanez has already been dubbed as Justin Bieber’s unofficial hip hop coach! Having just released his first mixtape project, “King of Kingz”, as a free online download featuring B.O.B., Justin Bieber, Soulja Boy, Akon, and Flo-Rida, Sean enlisted the help DJ Drama and DJ Ill Will (Co-founder Hot New Hip Hop) to host the project. A young mogul, Sean celebrated his “Super Stuntin’” 21st birthday presented by MTV at Club Play in Miami with special guests: Akon, Soulja Boy, Lil Twist, and many others.

I AM PRYZE by C. WHitfield

Riding a wave of regional success garnered from his premiere mixtape effort, The King of Carolina, North Carolina rapper, Pryze, has been busy in the lab working on his first official studio album, “Happy to be Here”, which will be released later this summer. “When we started this project we had over 500 producers that submitted tracks,” Pryze explains, “After weeks of listening through beats, conference calls and studio sessions, we narrowed it down to a solid seven producers that I had great chemistry with. All I can say is... If you liked that mixtape, you’re going to love this album!” Over the past six months Pryze’s stock has risen dramatically, with artists and producers from across the region reaching out to him for features and collaborations. Constantly back and forth between Atlanta and Carolina, he says his next move is to build a good team of DJs that can help shape the sound of the project as he enters his second phase of recording. His goal is to connect with DJs that are feeling the direction of the project and can contribute to the artistic vision. With his target markets being The Carolinas, Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia and Northern Georgia, he feels it is important to connect with DJs that are in tune with those markets. If you’re a DJ that is interested in an opportunity to help A&R an actual album, visit www.IAmPryze. com/AnR and apply for the regional A&R Team. Drake: Apples to Apples by C. WHitfield

Without a doubt, Drake has taken the game by storm. His first album, Thank Me Later, has already sold more than 1.3 million units and landed him endorsement deals with major brands such as Sprite, Virgin Airways and Kodak. In addition, he’s been tapped for features by some of the hottest names in the music industry, including artists such as Trey Songz, Rihanna, Rick Ross and even Jay-Z. Drake is definitely one of the hottest artists in Hip Hop right now but for all of his hard work and perseverance, it always amazes me to hear independent artists compare their marketing strategy to an oversimplified version of Drake’s own success story. If I had a nickel for every-time a rapper told me that they were just going to release a free mixtape online “like Drake” and let the deals come to them, I’d have enough money for a new MacBook Pro and a Mabach to leave it in.

contributed to Drakes success, that assuming you will see the same results by just putting out a free mixtape is like expecting two houses with the same square footage to have the same value even though one is in Hollywood, California and the other is in rural Mississippi.

This line of thinking bothers me for two distinct reasons. First and foremost, it understates all of the hard work, dedication, planning and money that Drake invested into his own career while down playing the adversity he overcame to get where he is. Second it creates a totally unrealistic comparison. There are so many other factors that

2) Did your second mixtape have beats by J-Dilla and 9th Wonder on it? Did it have features from Little Brother, Dwele, Trey Songz, Rich Boy and Kardinal Offishall? Did the video for its single debut on 106 & Park as the New Joint of the Day? Hmm... Ok.

When I hear artists compare themselves to Drake the first question that pops into mind is, “Are you Drake?” For the sake of argument, let’s just say you rap 10 times better than Drake. Now lets look at the rest of the stats for a true Apples to Apples comparison. 1) Was your first mixtape hosted by DJ Smallz? Did it have tracks by Boy-1da and features from the Clipse, Lupe Fiasco and Trey Songz? Did you SELL 6,000 units of it? Hmm... Ok.

3) While working on your third mixtape were you invited to go on tour with Lil Wayne? Did the resulting mixtape boast features from Lil Wayne, Bun B, Omarion, Lloyd and Trey Songz? Did it receive over 2,000 Downloads within the first 2 hours on your official website? Do you even have a budget to invest into yourself an official website or are you sending everyone to a Myspace page? Hmm... Ok. 4) Do you have the budget set aside to invest into your own project? Do you already have an established fanbase from being on a toprated television show that averaged 600,000 viewers per episode? Hmmm... Ok. Every year someone breaks into the industry and every independent tries to recreate their formula. Just think of how many rap groups released a youtube video with a dance. The moral of the story is this: You can’t be successful following a path that is not your own. There is no universal, one-size-fits-all strategy for succeeding in this industry. While there is much to be learned from those who have preceded us, you must ultimately stop and evaluate your own strengths, weaknesses, and resources.

Juno Awards 40th Anniversary by C. WHitfield

Now celebrating its 40th anniversary, the Juno Awards can best be described as the Canadian Grammys. What started in the mid 60’s as nothing more than a reader poll in the December issue of Canadian based RPM Magazine, has grown into one of the most presigious awards that can be bestowed upon any Canadian musician. In 1970 RPM Magazine founder, Walt Grealis, and record label owner, Stan Kless, collaborated to present the first official awards ceremony, then called the Golden Leaf, in Toronto, Canada. It would later be renamed to the Juno Awards in honor of Pierre Juneau, the first head of the Canadian Radio-Television Commission. Winners were announced each year in RPM Magazine prior to the actual awards ceremony until the awards were formally taken over by a music industry advisory committee later to be known as the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences. Long gone are the days of simple reader polls. With today’s nominees being determined by a combination sales figures and jury voting, winners are decided by academy votes and specially selected juries. However, in staying true to the events roots, the covetted Fan Choice Award is always bestowed by the votes of the general public, reminisent of those days of RPM Magazine. Hosted by Hip Hop Superstar, Drake, who is also nominated for six awards, this year’s Juno Awards return to Toronto with more performances and an extended broadcast that will be one for the record books.

AK Tha Razorman

by C. WHitfield

With Tip incarcerated and major restructuring going on at Grand Hustle, AK has put P$C on his back and hit the ground running with his latest solo project, Evolution. “Being signed to one of the hottest labels from Atlanta with one of the most historical artists in the game, it would be easy for anyone to get comfortable,” AK Explains, “But now with Tip being out of the picture, I feel it’s my responsibility to build on this foundation that I already have. Its a lot of hard work but I’m having fun with it. It feels good being back in the streets and on the road kicking it with these artists, promoters and DJs down in spots like Athens, Georgia ; Columbia, South Carolina and Birmingham, Alabama. The love that they’ve been showing has been ridiculous.”

Having just completed the video to his latest street single “Like Uhh…” AK has set some big plays in motion spanning from his new project which will be available Nationwide through Best Buy to positioning himself at the forefront of the 2D Barcode code revolution. Together with RFG Consulting Firm and UpCode USA they plan to give fans the opportunity to access exclusive content directly from marketing materials by turning Upcodes (Such as the one seen above) to the distribution channels of the future. Many may have first heard of U.G.O. Crew following the success of Still Fly, their 2010 Juno nominated collaboration with Drake and Bigg Page. More recently, U.G.O. Crew was also nominated for a 2011 Canadian Radio Music Award for their 2010 pop hit Change featuring Sean Kingston. Fresh off a North American tour with Hip Hop icons, Digable Planets, which boasted sold out shows in Portland, Seattle, Vancouver, Colorado, Arizona, New York and Los Angeles, The U.G.O. Crew has been busy working with renowned celebrity video director Paul Boyd to shoot the new video for their acoustic remix of Change. Though the group may seem to be a collage of cultures and influences, somehow their varied backgrounds and styles blend together seamlessly like spices in a hearty stew creating music that is not just flavorful, but filling to the soul. After hearing Stevano’s stinging rhymes and DJ Karina’s emotive voice layered over the Rock inspired, Latin-flavoured bass guitar melodies of Arturo, you will quickly understand their appeal.

Stevano is a razor-sharp MC residing in the streets of Jamestown, Toronto, whose distant childhood memories of an intermittent father from Nigeria opened a window of curiosity to the African language and a world yet to be seen. Weaving both interests liberally, he packs a wicked bi-lingual flow to form precise rhymes. Focused and resolutely opinionated about the political landscape of our times, he can shift effortlessly between dazzling bravado and indictment of national and international policy.

80’s classic rock legends. Diogo rounds out the Under Ground Officials Crew as master of the drums.

DJ Karina’s angelic rock/pop vocals betray the gravely road she’s traveled from her spiritual Canadian roots, to a tour of duty as a Ms. Toronto top finalist. She continues a self-described spiritual journey from which she has emerged more driven and committed to pursue her love of music on the Canadian scene and internationally.

Stevano and the U.G.O. Crew have also performed as support for P-Diddy, The Fugees, Ice Cube, KRS-1, Nas, Plantation Boyz, 2Face, Black Eyed Peas, Jay-z, Snoop Dogg, Beyonce, Digable Planets, Lil Wayne, Akon, Keyshia Cole, T-Pain, T.I., Sean Paul and Young Jeezy, Connect with U.G.O. Danny Fernandes

by C. WHitfield

Danny Fernandes could easily be considered Canada’s Justin Timberlake. The pop singer, who got his start dancing at just six years old, would soon be appearing in commercials, music videos and taking home numerous gold medals at Dance competitions by the age 16. Crediting his parents with much of his success, Danny states, “I’m fortunate that my parents have always been incredibly supportive. When I told them at a young age my desire to pursue music and dance as my career, not just a hobby, they said, “Let’s do it, but you’ve got to work hard.” Soon after, he hit the road with the likes of Aaron Carter, Blackstreet, Deborah Cox and his brother Shawn, with whom he toured the world for an entire year, even playing the NBA All-Star game in Atlanta. Upon returning to Canada he made that pivotal transition into the lane of Singer/ Songwriter and in 2003, his hit single “Curious” leaked its way into the European club scene and immediately made Danny a star. Four years later in 2007, Danny sent the song to New York, for a feature from Juelz Santana. The new version of the record immediately began climbing up the radio charts. Later in 2008 Danny signed his first record deal with CP Records, an independent Canadian label with a major distribution through EMI Music Canada. After inking this deal, Danny released his debut album “Intro” which shot to #1 on iTunes and boasted two Gold singles , “Private Dance” and “Fantasy”. The success of the project brought him a ton of accolades, including several Juno Award nominations and the opportunity to tour with artists such as Akon, Flo Rida, Sean Kingston and Girlicious. Danny is currently busy promoting his recently released sophomore album, AutomaticLuv. For information, booking, features or any business matters contact manny@cpmanagementinc.com

Justin Bieber Michael Jackson 2.0?

20 | Makin’ It Magazine

Justin Bieber was undoubtedly one of the biggest pop stars of 2010. With over 8 million fans following him on twitter, 23 million “likes” on FaceBook and close to 305 million YouTube views, he could easily be considered a modern day Michael Jackson. However, unlike the former King of Pop, young Bieber’s life is practically an open book, available for all the world to read. One could write this off as merely a sign of the times. We live in an ever-evolving, always-connected world and today’s fans demand not only information but access. From tabloids and reality shows to FaceBook and Twitter accounts, celebrities have practically become accessible 24/7; which leads us to ask, “Is all this access a good for the longevity of an artist’s career?” I am probably one of the biggest advocates of artists using social media to connect with their fans on a more intimate level. I love what artists like Fabolous have done to build their brand through authentic engagement of their fanbase. While there are a few shining examples of artists who are doing it right, I believe as members of the entertainment industry, many of our timelines are polluted with a greater number of those that are doing it horribly. In exploring the possibility of Justin Bieber ascending to the status of a Michael Jackson, I considered the following adverse side effects of all this accessibility on today’s artists. Where’s the mystery? Michael Jackson was a persona larger than life. I’m sure many can remember rumors of him purchasing the elephant man’s bones, sleeping in hyperbaric chambers or a ton of other outlandish story headlines. Living a life shrouded from the public’s prying eyes created a mystique so great that no matter how implausible the headline, in our minds it was entirely possible. There is no greater tool in publicist’s arsenal than

the public’s imagination but where there is too much information there is no room for mystery and where there is no mystery there is no room for imagination to take root. Burning bright and fast! The viral nature of social media has the ability to accelerate stardom at an exponential rate. Some would argue to say that super stardom is not measured in how brightly one burns but for how long. In a quest for immediate gratification have we placed a priority on quick success over the longevity of an artist’s career, reducing the industry down to a cycle of plucking “disposable talent” off the internet and rushing them to market without truly investing in development. The question we must ask is whether an artist will be like the brush fire that starts small and slowly grows consuming all in its path, or an explosion that can be seen for miles but quickly exhausts all of its fuel before fading into the dead of night. A world without filters. It’s a delicate balancing act regulating public exposure, giving the people just enough to see an artist’s humanity without tarnishing the public persona that has been delicately crafted over years. But when sex tapes, STD tests and mug shots go digital, all control is lost. Ironically, the most damaging content floating through the cyberspace often comes from the artists themselves: sexting pics, irate updates or blog posts, Tweets soliciting sex that were thought to be DMs (Yeah… remember that one!?) and I’m sure there are plenty worse. So while direct access to fans is a beautiful thing, we must also acknowledge that it severely limits the ability for a publicist to save an artist from themselves, as they so often need. As my father taught me, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!” While I’ve used some extreme examples for illustrative pur-

poses, it doesn’t always have to be a career crippling faux pas. More often than not, it’s the simple contradiction between the artist and how their fans perceived them. Who wouldn’t be disappointed to find out the MC that you thought was so deep is in fact a dunce or that R&B singer whose voice cuts right through the women’s clothes is a womanizing, deadbeat dad. I think these small losses can be much worse because they go on silently eroding an artist’s fan base with no immediate symptoms. Over exposure! We live in a consumer economy in a country where 34% of the population is considered overweight I would wager to say that moderation is not our strong suit. I feel this may have less to do with diet than with how we consume. Whether its food or information, we want it all and we want it now. With that being said, it has always been important for PR professionals to RATION an artist’s exposure to the public, not just how much they’re seen but with whom and where. Blogs and social media sites greatly reduce the ability to control media exposure leaving the door open for consumers to Consume, Consume, Consume! No matter how tasty the dish ... If you eat to much at once you will surely get SICK. Jumping back to our original question, Is it possible for Justin Bieber to become the next Michael Jackson or has the landscape changed so dramatically as to make it impossible for anyone to ever achieve such a level of success. This past November, Atlanta once again played host to the Core DJs semi-annual retreat. Where we were first introduced to a fresh new record label out of Rockford, Illinois that had the whole conference buzzing about their single “Fast Lane”. After the retreat, we got a chance to sit down with Yung Meech CEO of All In Entertainment to talk about Atlanta and the success of the new record. Being based in the midwest, he explained

How far would you go to follow your dream? If you ask new artist Metafortae how far he would go, he’d be sure to tell you ‘wherever the Navy may take him.’ Born in Fontana and raised in Ontario California, Brandon “Metafortae” Hoskin hit the music books in 2004 with a strong love of hip-hop instrumentals. He soon began making his own beats and recording at lightning speed. Well on his way, he experienced a huge set back when his computer experienced crashed. Determined to still pursue his dream he decided to join the navy as he found his place in music. With well over 400 pieces published on SoundClick, two albums under his belt, and another ten in the works, he has a work ethic truly to be admired.
