Municipal museum Idrija preserves and exhibits the rich cultural heritage of the regions of Idrija and Cerkno as well as manages the important monument of the local immovable heritage. Within the Gewerkenegg castle there are over 1,000 square metres of exhibition showrooms to present the visitors the five hundred years long history of the town, the mercury mine and the exceptional and world-famous Idrija lace. In the town itself you can, accompanied by a guide, get to know and admire the Miner’s House and the life-style of miners’ families, the Kamšt – a mine pumping device from the 18th century with the largest wooden water wheel of its kind in Europe, as well as a rich collection of museum’s Technical Department that is situated in the building of the Francis’ Shaft and includes mining machines and devices, and locomotives. The museum is also in charge of the Slovenia Partisan Printing Shop in Vojsko, which bears witness of the people’s ingenuity and resistance during WWII. The only daily newspaper of the resistance movement in Europe was printed here and upon your visit the caretaker will print you a souvenir leaflet on the old printing press. Municipal museum Idrija was awarded The Best European Museum of Industrial and Technical Heritage in 1997. It’s open every day throughout the year.

A part of the Francis’ Shaft entrance building is dedicated to the Technical Department of the Municipal Museum Idrija. 26 mining machines and devices originating from the late 19th and the early 20th century are on display to visitors in three rooms. The exceptional collection also includes a steam piston machine and a steam boiler of the Czech factory E. Skoda Pilsen, both dating from 1882.

The mine pumping device with a wooden water wheel (diameter of 13.6 m), the largest of its kind in Europe, was constructed 1790. The pumps had a pumping capacity of 300 liters of pit water per minute and it took the wheel 13 seconds to turn. Behind the Kamšt building there are 4 renovated locomotives which used to transport ore from the Joseph’s Shaft to the smelting plant.

The printing shop operated from September 1944 till May 1945 on the steep slope under the Vojsko plateau, hidden in the forest. Accompanied by the caretaker you will visit the facilities with original equipment and exhibits. What you will see, will leave you astonished by the ingenuity of its constructors. Especially interesting are the composing room, the engine room and the electric plant. The legendary printing press is still in operation. During WWII the daily newspaper Partizanski dnevnik was printed on it.

During the decades a special type of Slovenian dwelling houses was developed in Idrija – the Miner’s House. The building situated at the address Bazoviška 4, which is nowadays reconstructed into a museum, was built in the second half of the 18th century. In 1910 there were 18 people living in the house. With its exterior it makes a mighty impression. It is surrounded by gardens and on the first floor you can see a typically furnished miner’s apartment dating from the first half of the 20th century.

OPENING HOURS: Between 15 April and 15 October daily from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

OPENING HOURS: Visits are possible every day, accompanied by a museum guide.

With its collections, exhibitions and other activities, the museum is enabling visitors to recognize the cultural identity and heritage of the Cerkno region. Two permanent exhibitions are presently on display in the museum. Photographs, documents and exhibits comprising the exhibition The Cerkno Region Through the Centuries represent separate segments of the administrative, economic and cultural life in the region and the every-day life-styles of the local population. Authentic items put on display grant insight into the peculiarities of the life in this region. Very important and unique are the laufars, carnival figures with masks cut from the wood of the linden tree. The costumes, masks, the old custom and the ancient beliefs that have remained alive through their annual ceremony, are presented in the exhibition PUST IS TO BLAME! – A Story about the Cerkno Laufarija. The life-style of the previous inhabitants of the region can also be traced when visiting the homestead of the writer France Bevk in the village Zakojca, where beside his works the dwelling environment is presented, too. Our most remarkable object within the museum is the Franja Partisan Hospital, a monument of the WWII times, which has been added on the tentative list of the Unesco World Heritage and is one of the European Heritage sites. Unfortunately, during the catastrophic floods on Tuesday, 18 September 2007 the Hospital was demolished. Wild flood waters have ruined the access path and most of the cabins. The reconstruction will be conducted according to the plans of an expert commission and will last over a long period of time. All visits have been cancelled. OPENING HOURS: every day, except Monday, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.

The visitors to the tourist mine are first invited to watch a multi-vision slide projection about the second largest mercury mine in the world. After that, having put on protective overcoats and helmets, and accompanied by a guide who presents the exceptional story of the mine visitors enter the extraordinary underground world and are shown the hidden places with precious cinnabar ore and drops of native mercury, and the unique underground chapel. The process of winning the ore throughout the centuries is also explained and shown. OPENING TIMES: Mondays to Fridays at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.; Saturdays, Sundays and on holidays at 10 a.m., 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. Groups can book other times upon prior arrangement.

The Crypt is the only piece remained of the Hl. Barbara Church that once stood on the location of the presentday main square of the town. It was built mainly with the money donated by the miners, who wanted their patron saint to be watching over their safety in the pit and above the ground. During the allies’ bombings the church was severely damaged and then pulled down completely in 1951. The crypt was reopened to the public in 2007 after the total reconstruction of the square according to the plans of the architect Boris Podrecca. On 22 June, the name day of the Hl. Acacius, there is a church service in the crypt. In front of the crypt itself there is a gallery. LOCATION: The gallery and the crypt are located under the main square Mestni trg in Idrija.

The water barriers were a part of the system for drifting wood and timber used by the mine and the town from the forests around Idrija. They operated between the late 16th century and the year 1926. In 1770 the initially wooden klavže were replaced by built constructions on the rivers Idrijca, Belca and Zala; the constructor was a local expert Jožef Mrak. In 1813 the stone klavže on the river Kanomljica were built. Nowadays you can visit the klavže on the Idrijca, the Belca and the Kanomljica. Due to the highly aesthetic construction, extraordinary dimensions, age and their operation principles klavže rate among the most important monuments of the remains of the Idrija Mercury Mine. They are a unique cultural, historical and technological monument of international value.

SACRAL HERITAGE – CERKNO

EXHIBITION OF OLD FARM TOOLS

The archaeological sites Grad (castle) near the village Reka and Gradišče (site of an ancient fort) near Cerkno date back to the 1st century BC. The remains give evidence that the Roman army used to besiege the strongholds of combative settlers of the region, probably the Carnian. Both sieges were part of an extensive military invasion and probably took place at the beginning of the Illyrian wars. Numerous iron nibs of catapult missiles, spears and various arrows, as well as lead missiles to be used with slings and nails used in the soles of Roman soldiers’ footwear, have been found in an area of 20 hectares. The archaeological findings of the remains of Roman siege in the region are of extremely valuable due to the fact they are one of the few to give evidence about the historic event. Some of the finds can be seen in the National Museum of Slovenia.

Near the village Zakriž there are well preserved Italian military underground strongholds, typical for the border area between Italy in and the ‘old’ Yugoslavia between the world wars. The inhabitants of Zakriž have been using one of these strongholds situated on an easily accessible location. Every year at Christmas time they use it as the venue for their Live Christmas Crib event which attracts many visitors to their village. In Zakriž there is also an old fruit drying house which still functions and every autumn there come sweet scents of dried fruit out of it. The tower Miklavžev turn (picture) in the village Labinje is actually the ruins of an old miners’ church from the Middle Ages. The oral tradition claims there is a treasure hidden under the ruins.

The baroque style parish church St. Anna in Cerkno dates from 1717 and was built by the local architect Gregor Maček. Two altar paintings and three wooden altars have the most artistic value among the interior equipment. The church of St. Jost in the village Trebenče (picture), dating from 1595 has well preserved gothic elements despite the 17th century reconstructions in baroque style. During renovation works frescoes from the 15th and 16th centuries were discovered. Church of the Birth of Virgin Mary in the village Police represents typical lategothic architecture with a baroque-style nave and a bell tower separated from the nave. Frescoes made by Jernej from Loka, and dating from 1536 are the most valuable art pieces in the church. St. John’s church is located on the brink of the plateau of Šebrelje. Between the 4th and the 1st century there was a Roman military stronghold there and later it was changed into a Christian church from a previously pagan sanctuary.

OFFER: The archaeological park Divje babe is a paleontological site, a Karst cave in the steep rocky slope above the river Idrijca under the Šebrelje plateau. The finds include many remains of cave bears and traces of Ice Age man, his fire places and stone tools. The most famous find of all is the Neanderthal’s bone flute, the oldest musical instrument in the world. About 55,000 years ago a Stone Age man, a Neanderthal, the predecessor of the homo sapiens, drilled three equal holes into a young cave bear bone and used it to produce a simple melody. The sound he produced represents crossing the limit between the pure instincts and the first traces of conscious delight in the world of beauty. LOCATION: Outside Cerkno in the direction to the villages Reka and Šebrelje, on the slope under the St. John’s church. OPENING TIME: From 1 April to 30 September daily between 9 a.m. and 5 p. m.. Upon prior arrangement as visits are only possible with a local tour guide.

At the Čemažar homestead you can visit an interesting exhibition of old farm tools. The householder will be pleased to show you how old-time crafts (spinning of wool, making ropes, making straw roofs, etc.) and work were done in the past. Here it is also possible to see the famous Novaki Bow Ski, which you can buy either as a souvenir or as real skis. OPENING TIME: Every day upon agreement with the owner.

First, it was just an ordinary wooden ski with metal bindings for shoes in the middle of it. Italian soldiers used them, however the skis tended to break in half at the binding and therefore soldiers would throw them away. The inhabitants of the region discovered that the front part of broken skis could be reused. They sawed them through the broken part and in the middle of them a strap for boots was nailed. However, skiing with such skis was not easy as they were too short and the strap for holding shoes was not appropriate for managing skis. Therefore, an additional part - a bow - was fitted to skis in order to increase the manageability of skis. By redesigning the skis, skiing balance of skiers was improved.

“Cerkno laufarji” are one of the most famous carnival masks in Slovenia, famous for outstanding wooden masks (“larfe”) and outfit made of natural materials. The carnival event “Cerkno laufarija” has for centuries been organised according to the unwritten rules, only orally transmitted from generation to generation. The mask characters symbolise the bad and the good of different inhabitant groups. The major figure is “Pust”, accompanied by a range of other characters forming a family of 25. Among all the typical Slovenian masks the “laufarji” have to follow the most tragic scenario of all. “Pust” is blamed for being guilty of everything bad that happened in the previous year and is sentenced to death with a lumberjack hammer called “bot”. Numerous visitors come to Cerkno every year to admire the popular carnival events.

The brook Poreznica runs through the gully Zakojška grapa on the west side of the Porezen, the highest peak of the Cerkno hill range. It has created numerous waterfalls, rapids and pools in this steep region. Till the flood in 1926 mills and sawmills had been in operation on the brook. Today fish farming is cultivated here, whereas the gully Zakojška grapa is accessible to visitors and can be visited on horseback, too. For trips contact the tourist farm Pri Flandru. NATURAL HERITAGE

THE POREZEN, THE WALKING PATH TO THE KOPA

THE ARAGONITE CAVE ‘RAVENSKA JAMA’

THE LANDSCAPE PARK ZGORNJA IDRIJCA

LAKE ‘DIVJE JEZERO’

The peak of the 1,632 m high Porezen can be accessed by several marked routes leading from different directions. The peak, which offers a charming view of the Julian Alps and other pre-Alpine peaks and extends to the seaside on clear days, is part of the Slovenian Mountain Path. Paragliders use the top of the hill as a starting point, whereas the winter time enables telemark skiing on the steep slopes. While hiking up the hill one can follow the walking path to the Kopa passing the Cimprovka in the village of Gorenji Novaki (1,050 m). It leads to the 1,360 m high rock on the slope called ‘Kopa’ (heap) due to the resemblance of the rock with the charcoal heaps. The parking lot is equipped with an information board; the path is marked with signposts and trail labels in the form of the Novaki bow ski.

The area of the park covers 4,230 hectares with forests extending over 4,105 hectares of colourfully varied landscape. The park was founded to preserve the typical landscape of the region as well as for education and sports and leisure activities. It extends from Idrija including the headwaters of the rivers Idrijca and Belca to the peaks of the Golaki. The park represents a wellrounded set of natural features at the border between the Dinaric and preAlpine regions. Sport activities in the park include mountain biking and swimming at the natural baths Lajšt. Sightseeing of the lake Divje jezero, the water barriers Klavže on the rivers Idrijca and Belca and the famous dell Smrekova draga is recommended.

Divje jezero is a Vaucluse-type of lake situated in the Landscape Park Zgornja Idrijca. The lake is a museum in the nature, in 1967 it was recognised as a natural monument. The mysterious lake siphon descends into the unexplored Karst depths. During heavy rains the lake fills up with large quantities of underground waters from the area of the plateau of Črni Vrh, Godovič and parts of the Notranjska region. A 100-metre high overhanging rock ascends over the lake. The lake with the surrounding boasts rich flora (e.g. cowslip – Primula Veris) and fauna (e.g. proteus anguinus). LOCATION: The lake is situated 2 km south of Idrija in the direction of Idrijska Bela. The lake can also be reached by the walking path along water canals named Rake.

Fossil prints known as Dinosaurs’ Footsteps were discovered in the surrounding area of Godovič. Six footprints of the size 12–14 cm have been preserved. They belong to the predecessor of dinosaurs which lived in this part of Europe 220 million years ago and were the size of a man.

This over 9-metre high pine with branches rolled like snakes is an important natural sight of Godovič. The longest branches are over 4 metres long. According to biologists the unusual shape of the pine can be contributed to a rare combination of genetic base. The pine was proclaimed natural monument in 1987.

The way from the Landscape Park Zgornja Idrijca leads to the forest Trnovski gozd past the dell Smrekova draga, which is part of the forest reserve Golaki. The spacious dell is a Karst phenomenon renowned for a temperature inversion due to which vegetation strata are distributed in the inverse direction: Beech forest on the top is followed by the pine forest whereas at the bottom of the hollow dwarf bushes, mountain grass and moss grow.

INFORMATION: TIC Idrija Vodnikova 3, SI-5280 Idrija T: +386 (0)5 374 39 16 E: ticidrija@icra.si J. A. Scopoli was the first miners’ doctor in Idrija and an important European natural scientist who accomplished the best of his work in Idrija. The botanical knowledge of the former region of Carniola originated mostly from Idrija. The town gained its place in botanical history due to Scopoli. The following names from the botanical world are also strongly connected with the town: Hacquet, Hladnik, Freyer, Dolliner, Dežman, Glowacki etc. As these historical facts were not appreciated enough, a botanical garden presenting the plants, discovered or first described by these botanists, was founded. LOCATION: Above the famous Kamšt beside the Joseph Shaft in front of the entrance to water canal Rake.

The cave Ravenska jama is a natural monument consisting of a 352-metre long net of pits on three levels and it is famous for the rich decorative aragonite. Gentle white crystal covers of aragonite form stalactites and stalagmites, calcareous sinters and needle like formations of different shapes and sizes. Most fashionable looking among the latter are groups of more than 10-centimetre long needles forming the so called little hedgehogs, which represent the ornament crown of the cave Ravenska jama. LOCATION: In the village Ravne near Cerkno. OPENING HOURS: The cave is temporarily closed for the public.
