PERSONAL PROJECTS

- Tenshi and the GIANT -

Excerpt from: Tenshi and the Giant: The Miserable Meet-cute Date: April 2017 // Type: Comic // Medium: Watercolour, Photoshop

INTRODUCTION 'Tenshi and the Giant' is a love story between Tenshi, a winged forest dweller and Vishaal, a tree giant. The scene pictured above is my idea of their 'Meet-cute'. The couple first meet when Tenshi takes a nap on a Hawthorne tree, which in reality, is Vishaal in his tree avatar. This is a work in progress, with multiple chapters planned out for the future. 1

TENSHI AND THE GIANT

From my bedroom window, directly in my line of sight lie two trees that absolutely captured my imagination. From the silhouette of the two, I clearly saw a pair of lovers, swaying back and forth in the wind - A phenomenon called ‘Pareidolia’. This inspired the creation of two woodland characters - Tenshi and Vishaal. One a sprightly winged creature, and the other a massive tree giant.

INSPIRATION

(View from my balcony window)

(A close up of the trees)

The idea for these characters came from two trees outside my window, which resemble a pair of star crossed lovers, one a massive giant, and the other a winged woman.

This sketch here was a cleaner, more fleshed out rendition of my ‘Pareidolia* project’ - the initial working title of this work.

* (Pareidolia is a psychological phenomenon in which the mind responds to a stimulus by perceiving a familiar pattern where none exists.)

TENSHI AND THE GIANT

FIRST DRAFTS

Here are the first few scenarios I drew out to give myself an idea of the dynamic between the characters, and to establish the general environment of the story. [6]

Here Vishaal tries to amuse Tenshi with his special abilities as one of the Tree folk, but she is quite obviously not impressed. [7]

This situation sprung out of the realization that a woman flying in a dress, in a forest is not practical. Hence, I made a change in character design, dressing her in tights and a top.

Excerpt from: Girl on Autopilot (Page 1) Date: Jan 2017 // Type: Comic // Medium: Ink, Markers, Photoshop

INTRODUCTION A study into the self, 'Girl on Autopilot' is an 8-page long, allegorical mini-story, following the characters ‘Manual’ and ‘Autopilot’. They are two opposing personalities within the same person. The story focuses on the inner, emotional struggle faced by most artists. ‘Manual’ initial character sketch 9

GIRL ON AUTOPILOT

INSPIRATION The Title and basic idea for the story comes from a personal blog of the same title. Here Autopilot is characterized as being the part of you that is best suited to mindless tasks and interferes in the way of actual progress, dissuading any hard work in favour of mindless escapism.

PROCESS

Journaling is an integral part of my process. It helps me focus on the intended message of the narrative.

Sample layout plan for the comic with basic sketches, placement of dialogue and colour sampling.

Each page in the story was both, drawn and coloured on a single sheet of A4 paper.

PROFESSIONAL PROJECTS

INTRODUCTION Fabiia Middle East is an interior design firm in the UAE. As a content writer I wrote and published articles for their online inspiration page. I was also approached to design the cover layout. CLIENT BRIEF We want a magazine cover for our online inspiration page. It must give customers the feeling of going through a professional design magazine akin to Elle Decor, Good Homes, Interior Design etc. Our demographic is a mature, working woman, late 30’s and older. It should look clean, and allude to the given title - ‘Inspiration’. INSPIRATION Inspiration by Fabiia* Date: February 2017 // Type: Magazine Cover // Medium: Adobe Illustrator

In the cover I wanted to add an element of wonder and bring out themes of creativity, renovation and design. On the right hand side of the cover I also incorporated a swatch of colours, made to resemble the Pantone colour strip with their number codes. A dreamy, far-away look was given to the woman, denoting a vivid imagination taking over as she sits to plan her interiors.

The Dare (Story by R.J. Fox) Date: Feb 2017 // Type: Illustration // Medium: Markers, Ink Plot: A writer suffering from a bout of writer’s block and with a marriage on the rocks, dallies with the idea of having an affair with his muse - a barista at his local coffee shop.

Lines that inspired the illustration: ‘. . . He then headed out into a snowfall so dense; it was as though he were trapped in a snow globe. . . .’ ‘ . . . As he drove away, he felt a deep contentment he couldn’t recall ever feeling at any point in his adult life. For once, he didn’t care what the future would bring. Nor, did the past really matter anymore. The only thing that mattered was the present and a full awareness of what his next piece of writing would be about. . . .’ 24

POETRY & PROSE

www.girlonautopilot.blogspot.ae I started this blog in January of 2014 in order to publish stories, rants, poetry and general musings on life and its eccentricities. With each piece I wrote, I featured an artwork by different artists/illustrators/photographers who I admired, some world famous (Picasso, Dali etc.) and some who I discovered on the internet (Darren Cools, Begona Toledo etc.) There were a few instances where I made the art myself such as follows: Fragments 2 (Bottled laughter) Date: April 2014 // Type: Illustration // Medium: Watercolour, Ink '' You are the stars that govern my destiny Light years into the future that Is yours to mould As long as You mould me To you. --------------------------------------------------I have left a whole lot of laughter bottled up For the times I have yet to spend with you. --------------------------------------------------I dwell on you constantly For I am curious by nature. Curiosity that grows warm with anticipation Under the pillow upon which You lay your head to dream. --------------------------------------------------Just because I can't see the wind Doesn't mean you don't exist. Just because I can't sing the words Doesn't make you any less melifluous. Just because I don't feel you now Doesn't mean the future lies far from your embrace. Just because you are a reality Doesn't make you any less magical. '' 29

MY BLOG: GIRL ON AUTOPILOT

Show Up Date: July 2014 // Type: Illustration // Medium: Ink, Water-colour This is a bit of prose that deals with the difficulty of falling in love in today's day and age. The illustration is a humourous, over-exaggerated take on the following lines in the post: ' . . Walking down a street and staring off into the distance, I am constantly aware of my being, of how tall my stance appears, how schooled my expression. I regard each and every individual in the periphery of my sight, not concentrating on anyone, but allowing them to accumulate into a mass labelled as ‘strangers’. Now I wouldn't say I'm a sight for sore eyes, but I do manage to turn a few heads, . . .'
