E KOMO MAI! Malama Maui Nui welcomes you to the 2022 Art of Trash and Trashion Show!
The Art of Trash and Trashion Show is an annual juried art exhibition that showcases the reimagination of previously used materials
as elements for creative composition. All entries must be original works made from recycled and/or reused materials. Natural
elements may be incorporated, but may not be used in abundance or as the main feature. Selections are judged based on the
transformation of materials, quality craftsmanship and overall creativity.
Congratulations and many thanks to the artists who submitted pieces.
You continue to inspire us.
Due to the global pandemic, this year's event is presented in the form of this magazine.
Thank you for joining us.
Enjoy!

WE MISS YOU! We miss Sargenti’s Junk Yard God’s opening set filling Maui Mall with magical music created with uniquely crafted instruments made from old gas cans and surfboards and such. We miss Samba Maui’s youthful drum procession that so energetically kicks off the Trashion Show. We miss Trashion Show participants' stage walks and real live community audience reactions and interactions. We miss the highly anticipated annual grand opening of the Art of Trash exhibition and experiencing the physical, dimensional presence of the magnificent pieces of art. Most of all, we miss you—your smiling faces, your supportive hugs and your joy and enthusiasm for the annual Art of Trash and Trashion Show. While you all were busy reimagining materials into dazzling pieces of art, we worked vigorously to reimagine the Art of Trash and Trashion Show during a global pandemic. We got to make and share virtual art galleries, an epic little Trashion Show film and this year we’re excited to present to you the Art of Trash and Trashion Show magazine! Thank you for hanging with us virtually while we haven’t been able to spend time in person. We couldn’t be more grateful for your support, especially during such a challenging time. These digital platforms have been fun to explore and we are grateful that they allowed us to continue to showcase our community’s talent for turning discarded materials into art. However, there is no substitute for your presence. We love you. We appreciate you. WE LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING YOU AGAIN IN PERSON FOR
THE 2023 ART OF TRASH AND TRASHION SHOW!

ON THE COVER
HULEA CLOAKACLE BY TRACY CRAIG AND LEA LEVY
"We had a birthday party where we were talking about the Trashion show and decided to use everything there as our
inspiration: the hat was a plastic food tray from Miss Arepa food delivery, the party decorations and grocery bags were
recycled into the hat and skirt.
We rescued the old headband and laces from trainers that were about to be thrown out. The bubble wrap was from a
furniture delivery last year which we had kept for storing furniture. The velcro was washed and recycled after it was
initially used on mermaid tails.
Even though we are 56 and 10 years old, respectively, we feel the same way about recycling and wanted to collaborate to
create something together that would reflect this. Showing that it doesn't matter what your age, you can come together
to help pass on the message of reuse and recycle."

APRÈS SHOPPING
BY SOPHIA GALLEGOS
"I WANTED TO EXPERIMENT.
I didn't want the dress to look as though it were
plastic. Mostly I used packaging materials, and
though I do love to shop, it was frustrating to
realize how many plastic bags my family had in
our house from various shops. It felt really
unnecessary. This was mainly an experiment to
see if I could successfully transform the
materials into a cute dress, but has the subtle
message to remind people to
bring your own bag!"

BY SKYE OKITA
"My inspiration for
this outfit was a
book that we read
in school. We need
to STOP polluting
in the ocean." 16

"IT WAS SO AMAZING TO SEE
PRODUCTS THAT ARE
USUALLY DISCARDED
TURNED INTO SOMETHING
BEAUTIFUL AND
FASHIONABLE. IT REALLY
PUT INTO PERSPECTIVE HOW
MANY ITEMS WE THROW
AWAY WHICH CAN HAVE
MULTIPLE DIFFERENT USES."
WEAVING A SOLUTION BY RAYLEE RIBUCAN
"The inspiration for this
piece was working
together. The world has
so many issues with the
trash that it will take
everyone working
together in order for us
to make a difference. As
we all live here we need
to all work; it is our
responsibility."
OCEAN LIFE
BY RYNLIE HANSEN-CAPITANO

MERMAID
HAIR AND
I DO CARE BY NATALIE CAPITANO
"AS STEWARDS OF
THE LAND IT IS OUR
RESPONSIBILITY TO
TAKE CARE OF IT.
Not only was this a great mother-daughter
bonding time but also very eye-opening to
wanting to continue in making a difference
in keeping Maui beautiful."
"The achievements we had in this
creation were adaptability. We
had to change our materials part
of the way to better suit our art
piece. Time restraints were
difficult with such a detailed
piece, but we learned to move on
and do the best we can. While
using recycled and reused
materials we had to change the
original plan to use the materials
we have. We also learned about
our team's strengths. Some
members were better at making
than designing our outfits."
DON'T BURN FOSSIL FUELS
BY KEALA AWONG
RECYCLE WEAR BY ANELAOKALANI HAFOKA
"Trees are cut down every day to make paper
and other wood items. My dress is made of
newspaper to rescue the trees. If more people
reused the paper instead of buying new paper
then they will cut down fewer trees.
EVERY LITTLE BIT COUNTS."

WE MUST PUSH ON
BY JARED LONGGAY
"I LET THE TRASH TELL ME WHAT TO DO."
"This was a fun and interesting activity. At first, I had so many ideas that I wanted to do. I never thought
that making clothing would be this difficult but once everything was done I was proud. Using these
materials was difficult at times, but I let the trash tell me what to do.
Did you know that glue gun burns through plastic?
LEARNED THAT QUICKLY!"

OVER
DRESS IN A
MESS OF
MESH
BY OLIVIA COLETTI
"The mesh was very pliable,
yet still stubborn, which
reminded me a lot of my
own personality. It was also
fun to create the dress
within the walls of the Mill
where it was once going to
be used but then left to rot.
Life After Death is a
common theme in my art.
This dress
is no different.
EVERY SCRATCH WAS WORTH IT!" 39
QUEEN OF STUFF THAT MATTERS
BY DEYBRA FAIR
"I’m in the middle of moving my
home and studio of 36 years.
It has been an overwhelming
process dealing with the daunting
task of what to keep and what to
discard. My whole life I’ve held on
to treasures, collecting things
that most people would throw in
the trash. This self portrait
reflects my present state of mind.
ADORNING MYSELF WITH A FEW OF MY FAVORITE THINGS."
CURATORS CHOICE
SCARAB DRESS BY RUTH WADDY
MODELED BY CARAH CHAFIN
"IT AMAZES ME HOW ENTHUSIASTICALLY PEOPLE
WILL COLLECT THINGS ON YOUR BEHALF WHEN
THEY FIND OUT THAT YOU ARE MAKING
SOMETHING FROM TRASH." 43
"THE SCARAB BEETLE IS THE ULTIMATE RECYCLER.
Deified by Egyptians for its Sisyphean instinct to
perpetually roll balls of dung; they symbolize the sun's
crawl across the sky and the dawn of a new day. By
using waste for regeneration, they both clean their
environment and perpetuate their species. This piece
was inspired by their determination and iridescent
shells.
I meticulously bent in the edges of each bottle cap,
hammered them flat, and punched holes into them. I
then cut used bicycle inner tubes into strips and wove
the caps onto them. My husband's aunts gave me a
collection of costume jewelry which I used to
embellish the neckline and bodice. I'd saved an old
tent whose poles were beautiful shades of copper and
crimson. By cutting them into segments, I was able to
string them like beads on the hem and sleeves. I
finished the piece with the molted feathers from our
beloved chickens that I'd been collecting over the
years. The end result is a kind of lovely time capsule
of things discarded and dear to me."

"THE AE'O HOLDS A SPECIAL PLACE IN MY HEART. One of my duties as a conservation technician was to monitor, protect
and observe the daily habits of this endemic bird. We host regular
beach clean-ups on our island and felt compelled to bring more
awareness to this magical bird and our beach plastic problem. It
was quite easy to locate the materials since our beaches have so
much debris. Once I collected the right colors, it was just a matter
of gluing the colors in place. The gray front legs sticking out in the
front came from a picture I took of the mother bird holding the chick
inside its chest for warmth and safety."

be fun. It takes a community to
collectively adopt and put into
practice everyday recycling.
The teacher is in us all to set
examples and continue to
strive for zero waste. I am
always happy to do my part to

THE KANAHĀ FISH BY NIKA ANGELL
"MY EXPERIENCE USING
REUSABLE TRASH TO CREATE
ART WAS VERY GOOD. I did this same kind of project last
semester, and this semester I went
on a completely different path,
which I am happy about. It was so
much fun going around and having
to look for materials. Having to
really think and be creative was a
challenge, but it was worth it when
you would find the perfect piece.
I would definitely do this again and
probably do something completely
different again, just to try
something new."
