Welcome to

our April edition

D ear All, Well done to everyone who were involved in

organising the recent French Farmer’s market and Family Fun Day. I go to press before the events happen but am crossing fingers that the weather improves! Hopefully there will be more treats in store for Worcester Park residents in the coming months and we will bring you more news as we get it. As ever, I’m delighted to see that our “Clubs and What’s On” pages are still getting so many submissions. If you run a group or a regular event (or are perhaps thinking of starting one) then please do get in touch. As long as it’s held on a not-for-profit basis, the entries on our community pages are free of charge. So if there are events happening in May and June email them through to me jenny@wplife.co.uk Thank you to all my lovely readers who’ve been encouraging me on my recent running ‘journey’. Last week I completed my first 5km run – without stopping or falling over! As you may have read, I started a beginners running group in January run by The Sheen Shufflers in Richmond Park (as well as using a training app on my iphone a couple of times a week). The plan is that from running in just one minute intervals (a struggle at the beginning, trust me) your body is gradually trained to run 5km. And believe it or not, it actually works! So if you’ve been deliberating

On the grapevine Aret kapetanovic @ The Vin Bin

Ieach t’s at about this time year that I start

feverishly planning my escape to exciting places, far away food and wine destinations and hotter climes. Longingly, I stare at holiday brochures and develop an unhealthy obsession with A Place in the Sun, Home and Away. I think it’s the uncertainty of the not quite there season, not quite winter (although it’s doing a good impression!) and not quite summer but always, always wet. Unfortunately, reality bites and I am painfully aware that work commitments and life in general will not be conducive to long, leisurely breaks away this year, and so it’s time to plan my staycation and hope upon hope that we are actually blessed with some decent weather. In the lead up to the ‘hotter’ months I always forget how much London and indeed the UK has to offer. If you are inclined to, you can fill your calendar choc full of interesting experiences and outings whether your first love is culture, food and drink, nightlife or music. I’ve only just started to put together my summer wish list of events and already I’m feeling pretty good about the months ahead. There seems to be some really interesting things going on not too far from Worcester Park and one in particular is top of my agenda. May is shaping up to be a great month for events with the Foodies Festival coming to Hampton Court on May 25th, 26th and 27th or if you can’t make those dates pop along to Clapham Common on June 7th, 8th and 9th. I missed this event last year and it had such great reviews that I don’t intend to make the same mistake twice! Full to the brim with star chefs, informative masterclasses and lots of delicious food and drink, this festival is well worth a visit. If you are a budding photographer who loves their culinary pleasures and the organisers like the look of your previous work, you could even bag yourself a free 3 day pass and exclusive backstage access. All children under 12 go free and Tickets are a bargain at £15 for a 1 day adult pass, £25 for three days or go all out and treat yourself to a VIP ticket with a glass of Champagne on arrival, VIP access, reserved seating for masterclasses and a taster meal, all for £48. If you feel brave enough to take on the London crowds in the summer then you’ll have plenty to

6

choose from, don’t miss the Chelsea flower show (for the more cultured and sensitive souls), the Itunes Festival (if you’re young and hip and actually know who Tinie Tempah and One Direction are!) or if like me you enjoy really good food and drink, head to Taste London in Regents Park from the 20th to the 23rd of June 2013. The choice is yours. Now lets just pray for a summer! WPLife

Worcester Park History Cheam Common Cottages This month we look at the cottages in Cheam

Common Road close to the double-bend leading into Central Road. By the mid-19th century there were about a dozen cottages facing the main stretch of road, and a few more on the double bend; the area was known as North End Place. In 1861 the cottages were mainly home to agricultural labourers, although in a sign of the changing times the householders and their families also included bricklayers and a navvy (perhaps working on the railways). By 1901 there was much more diversity: householders in this part of Cheam Common Road included a law wigmaker’s assistant and a ‘money till maker’, who may well have been commuters. The North End Tavern had been established here by 1871; the present building dates from the early 1930s. Among the surviving cottages, beyond the Tavern, is no. 235, where the Chamberlain family were in business for over fifty years, latterly extending into the former greengrocer’s at 237. The late Fred Chamberlain recalled that his father was “bombed out of South London and came here during the war. He

was mechanically minded, always interested in motor cycles etc. He joined the local civil defence, and people said they couldn’t get their bicycles repaired, and he started repairing their bicycles when he was on duty at the civil defence. It blossomed from there: he decided to open a shop; when I came out of the army in 1946 I joined him in the cycle business.” In addition to repairs, the Chamberlains “did sales: we had Raleigh, Rudge, Coventry Eagle, about a dozen agencies.” For many years the shop was noted for the penny-farthing bicycle standing outside: “I said to my father, ‘We want a bit of a gimmick outside’, so I put an advert in Exchange and Mart for a penny-farthing bike, and a chap wrote to me from Egham. I went down there, and I said ‘How much do you want for it?’ He said ‘Oh, one pound ten.’ I said ‘Oh, there’s some broken spokes in it.’ He said ‘Well, give us a pound for it.’ I brought it back here, and it was out the front for ages. The tyre had rotted, but we got over that easily enough by pram tyring: we used to buy pram tyring in big coils and make our own tyres up according to the diameter of the wheel. And the broken spokes: by coincidence on the old roller-lever brakes there was a

long brake rod, and the thread and the diameter of the metal was exactly the same as them spokes. I wrote to Phillips and I said, would they make me these brake rods, 2 dozen, 2 foot 8 inches long, and they must have wondered what I wanted them for.” On one occasion Mr Chamberlain included the penny-farthing in a display at Cheam Charter Fair, and a camera crew urged him to ride it. “To my utter amazement I rode it well: they showed it at the Granada Cinema, and there’s me coming down as if I’d been doing it all me life. “About the 1960s the cycle trade slumped, so I decided to go back to what we used to do before the war, which was light transport. My wife used to run the shop when I was out; I did a lot of house clearing work, so we started selling secondhand goods. Freddy Smith used to work round the corner where they were making garden ornaments, and then went to Mark Tapley [whose garden

ornaments shop was at 54 Central Road]. About the 1970s Fred said to my wife ‘Shall I put a couple of my stone ducks in your window?’ By lunchtime she’d sold the pair of them and from then it just multiplied.” After his wife’s death in 1999 Mr Chamberlain closed the light transport business, but continued selling garden ornaments into the 2000s, from his shop in which he also displayed items he had acquired in house

clearances, from Marmite cubes to a Charringtons’ coal price card. Although the shop has now closed, I am sure that many of you, like me, have at least one garden ornament from Mr Chamberlain’s shop, and I suspect that they have probably travelled around the country, if not further afield, as local people have moved house. Our illustrations this month show the frontage of the shop at 235 Cheam Common Road, and Fred Chamberlain on his penny-farthing. You may like to know that I have been asked to give a talk, ‘Old Malden and Worcester Park, old and new’, telling the story of our district and illustrated with slides of old photographs and corresponding modern views, at St John’s Hall, also known as the Malden Institute, at 411 Malden Road (between Downfield and Forest Side) on Saturday 20th April at 7pm. Tickets (£3) should be reserved in advance by ringing Pat Lovegrove on (020) 8942 7699, and proceeds will go towards repairs to the hall, originally built as a village institute for Malden and Cuddington to mark the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria. Ruth Jemmett Writes

Robert Browning, Salisbury Road and me R uth Jemmett’s salute to April I have always loved poetry, and at this time of the year I am particularly reminded of when I was a pupil at St. Andrew’s Convent in Leatherhead many years ago. A severe looking nun asked our class to learn a poem entitled “Home thoughts From Abroad” by Robert Browning”, the first line being “Oh to be in England now that April’s there ….”. It was the first piece of poetry I had ever learnt by heart, and to this day I can rattle it off at a moment’s bidding. The words encapsulate an image of idealised countryside in the England of 1845 when they were written. Browning transports us to a place unspoilt by the ugliness of the industrial revolution that covered hitherto rolling fields in concrete and tarmac. His reference to a chaffinch is timeless, as over a century

since the piece was written I saw that very bird in my garden today. It’s colourful feathers were an uplifting sight as they contrasted against the grey sky above them, and it was cheering to think that spring is on its way. Naturalists constantly tell us that many varieties of birds are in danger of extinction, and yet here in this enclave of suburbia we are blessed by living amid the remnants of ancient forest, which provides homes to many squirrels and birds that start to breed at this time of the year. The planners who erected our bungalows in the 1930s had the imagination and foresight to build our homes in between many towering trees, and thankfully many of them remain here to this day, despite dreadful effect of the dreaded Dutch Elm Disease in the 1970s, a very unexpected hurricane in 1987, and the endeavours a variety of enthusiastic amateur lumberjacks in this area! As the weather warms up we are starting to see more birds in our road, including nuthatches and all varieties of woodpecker. We should never take the beauty of our surroundings for granted, and many people in Salisbury Road help nature help itself by feeding wildlife when the weather is harsh.

Foxes - like the poor - are always with us. They give birth to their cubs in the middle of winter, and as the days start to warm up we begin to see them with their parents. Foxes want to survive and nurture their young as much as we do. They have visited our garden regularly since we moved here thirty years ago. They have received quite a negative press recently, owing to literally a couple of unusual incidents - compared to domestic dogs, who are to blame for inflicting literally thousands of bites on humans every year. I see many foxes in my garden on most evenings throughout the year, and have never known any of them to be aggressive. They live happily side by side with local cats. A fox did indeed wander into our drawing-room one summer’s evening a few years ago, but it appeared not to like what was on the television, and promptly wandered out again! When they kill chickens they are following the instinct to grab food while they can - just as WE do when we stack our supermarket trolleys with frozen ones! Foxes are acknowledged as being much more intelligent than most dogs, and indeed can be taught to sit on command very easily. We have had foxes here that can be hand-fed, and I would swap them any day for some of the snarling un-muzzled dog breeds that one sees dragging their owners round the park! If people don’t like foxes they really shouldn’t choose to live on the edge of The Green Belt. This area belonged to foxes long before we humans

invaded it! The changing seasons remind us that we are all getting older. When my family and I arrived here all those years ago, we were ‘the new kids on the block’. It is hard to believe that we are now becoming ‘golden oldies’! Each season of the year - like each season of our lives - has its attractions. When we are young we doubtlessly look better - and how! - ( someone pass me a giant bottle of Oil of Olay urgently please!) - but age has its compensations. As the April in our bodies tugs us reluctantly towards September, we find different pleasures. Like the “blossomed pear tree” that Robert Browning spoke of in his poem, we may have passed our full-flowering beauty, but we bear the sweet fruit of experience, and hopefully wisdom. The late French singer and actor Maurice Chevalier once famously sang “I’m Glad I’m Not Young Any More”. When I WAS young I thoughts that such a sentiment was strange. After all, I reckoned - who WOULDN’T want to be young? Now that my seventh decade is a handful of years away I appreciate the lyrics more. Ageing bodies and minds make us slow down, and we learn to literally ‘stop and smell the roses’, in a way that we never did in our youth. As our time in the garden of life runs down, we savour things and people more, truly appreciating each moment we are here. As we survey our April gardens in our road we might envy the animals and birds just a little bit, for they have no concept of time, or fear of death. Their days are merely filled with a biological imperative. They live for the moment. Our well-developed human brains make us painfully aware of how we must literally make hay while the sun shines. On balance, a flower or a mouse is pretty lucky not to fear the future or regret mistakes made in the past! April is traditionally the month when we play an ‘April Fool’ trick on those around us. I am ashamed to say that the naughty little girl in me still delights in thinking up a silly trick on the first day of the month! I have worked my way through most of favourites at one time or another, including stapling curtains together, sticking coins on the floor and the like, but I think my favourite prank was to make a huge Velcro spider and place it in the bathroom sink. It was worth the effort of making it just to see my normally laid-back husband sprint down the hall at a warp speed that would have shamed The Starship Enterprise! This month is usually the one when the first cuckoo is heard. Many superstitions are associated with its arrival. One of them is that on hearing the cuckoo’s first call, you should jingle the money in your pocket to ensure prosperity for the rest of the year. So, you Worcester Park residents, let’s hope you will be jingling that money soon, and that the noise you are making isn’t drowned out by the sound of too many heavy April showers! WPLife

Meanwhile, heat the butter in a heavy-based pan until melted and foaming. Add the rice and garlic. Fry gently for 1-2 minutes, stirring until the rice is translucent. Pour in the stock. Add the saffron and bring to the boil, stirring. Cover the pan with a tight fitting lid. Reduce the heat to the lowest setting and cook for 15-20 minutes without removing the lid until the rice is tender and all the liquid is absorbed. Remove from the heat. Fork through to separate the grains. Add the sultanas, flaked almonds and pomegranate seeds. Carve the lamb racks into individual cutlets and serve immediately with the fragrant rice and roast onion wedges. Beauty

Pucker Up - Make-Up Tricks for Kissable Lips

Snoticed oft, plump, kissable lips are guaranteed to get you - but if mother nature hasn’t blessed you with them, don’t despair, because we’ve compiled a clever guide that will help you to fake a full-on pout.

Soften Up Before you even think about applying lipstick to your lips, it’s essential to spend a bit of time creating the right base for your product. Exfoliation is key in keeping your lips looking luscious as well as smooth and free of flakes, so it’s important to do this once a week. Start by applying a generous amount of lip balm to your lips to soften them, and then gently remove the top layer of skin using a soft wash cloth or toothbrush, in circular motions. Smother your lips in balm every night so that they are super soft for the next morning, when you apply your make-up. Line Up Although lip pencil probably isn’t high up on your shopping list of beauty must-haves, when used correctly it can be an essential tool. It allows you to shape and define your lips, and helps to stop your lipstick from ‘bleeding’. Choosing a neutral and natural shade of lip liner is key for creating a modern look. Lining just outside the coloured part of your lips provides the fullest effect. Many women don’t do this, and tend to line inside the lip line, but this makes your lips appear thinner because the natural lip line generally extends further than the coloured part of your lips. Be sure to choose a soft lip liner and ‘round off’ the tip by smudging it on the back of your hand a few times - a sharpened point will look unnatural and harsh - before you apply. Define your ‘cupid’s bow’ by drawing a V in the centre curve of your top lip, bring the line round and down using soft feathery strokes. Line the curve of the bottom lip with the same light movements, and soften by lightly blending with your finger. Complete with Colour It’s best to choose a natural shade of lip colour for two reasons: firstly, light and bright hues look youthful and secondly they make the lips appear fuller, unlike dark shades which have the opposite effect. Use a lip brush to paint the product onto your lips for a neat and even application - ensure that you take the colour right up to your lip liner line.

Get The Gloss Lip gloss is every girl’s best friend because it offers a lovely finish to otherwise dull lipsticks and can modernise your entire make-up look. Apply a shimmery gloss to the centre of your lips and blend gradually outwards to make your lips look really full. And, if you really want to make an impression with your pout, try one of the plumping glosses that are on the market. Using menthol, cinnamon or even chilli as active ingredients, these lip glosses create a mild irritation on contact with the lips causing them to temporarily increase in size. The tingling sensation lets you know it’s working and the results last for a few hours, so to keep the look you’ll need to re-apply regularly. By Helen Taylor WPLife

The Better Life Village Life

O ur village is a society in miniature. There are

helpers and hinderers, alliances, conflicts and the occasional historical feud, all in a state of flux. Think Emmerdale, minus the glamour. But also, in amongst the intrigue and entertainment, for the dedicated Better Lifer there is a wealth of knowledge, experience and produce. It’s less to do with any formal notion of exchange, and more about sharing what you know and whatever surplus you have. I like to think it helps that we are incomers and get on with everyone – a little like Switzerland, but with chickens instead of cuckoo clocks. Out the gate go butternut squashes, the occasional session of occasionally successful computer-related support, green beans, plant cuttings and spare eggs. (I should declare here that, although I love having the

chooks, I can take or leave eggs – don’t tell Anne though.) Back through the gate, at various times, come flowers, leeks, marmalade, gooseberries aplenty, different plant cuttings and apples. When our tiny greenhouse needed to come down because the supporting wall required structural work, we asked around and found a good home for it. Well, a good garden actually. Three of us carried it up the lane in sections and two of us returned with rhubarb, fresh flowers, beetroot, runner beans, chard and the most delicious raspberries imaginable. Living greener, the value of a thing is not financial; it’s the use someone can make of it. Only once did we slightly blot our village copybook. Invited up to a carol service at the nearby chapel, we arrived late (mea culpa) and sat in the annexe close to the open door. Someone stuck their head through and politely insisted, as we were the only ones in the room, that we joined the throng next door. Unfortunately, the only seating left was up in the pulpit. Judging by the sea of faces below us, it was a mixed reception. It didn’t help that Anne had forgotten her glasses and I have a habit of singing too loudly at social occasions. We’ve cried off every year since as a mark of community respect. That ‘blip’ aside, our fellow villagers are very supportive of our endeavours – being green is nothing new after all, especially in the countryside. Wearing wellies to the shops, as you prefer to cut across the fields, and carrying back armfuls of kindling because it was too good an opportunity to waste, barely raises an eyebrow. And who doesn’t enjoy the sound of chickens in the morning? (Next door’s dog - that’s who.) Even our local builder got in on the act, turning up at 8am with a bag of mackerel, fresh off the boat, so he could teach me how to gut it. The cat really enjoyed the lesson, but I soon wished that I’d let my breakfast porridge settle a bit first. One villager, a carpenter, came to our rescue after the coat rack fell out of favour with the wall. It turned out that I’d managed to somehow miss both raw plugs when screwing it in – a personal best in DIY incompetence, which no doubt I will supersede at some point. “Well, we’re all good at something,” he told me, in a voice that suggested I really ought to find out just what that is. Definitions: Lead – to direct the way ahead or, Lead – a dead weight “Inspiration” – to stimulate (a person) to activity or creativity. Surely this must be the key word for any Chancellor when presenting his Budget to the nation. Good policies, ideas and concepts are all very well, but if they are not effectively communicated to the real audience (us) then they will fail in their intention. So for the Budget this week, it is obviously too late for any further lobbying, but it is not too late to call for it to be delivered in such a way that it can attempt to

create the most important word for any economy and its Chancellor – confidence. Let’s be clear, it has been nearly half a decade since the financial crisis started and the economy still remains no larger than it was in 2006. We see an economy which, according to the official statistics, is seemingly flat lining - other than the odd nudge up or down. However, I would also contend that these statistics are not measuring things effectively and that there is in fact far more going on than is currently being evaluated. From start-ups to employment there are some very interesting trends, but little seems to filter through to the popular news and headlines. The Chancellor had hoped by now that the economy fireworks would at least be fizzing on the fuse, if not actually going off. After three budgets he was hoping for 7% growth by now, but unfortunately it’s only 2.4%. So standing around a wet firework with a packet of

damp matches doesn’t seem to be working very well. Time for a new firework and some new matches. Some of us of a certain age will recall the last time we so heavily relied upon monetary policy – in the earliest days of Mrs. Thatcher. Popular history is that the “lady was not for turning”, but of course she was, and she did. The difference then was that she was able to argue and lead her party and most (depending on how you counted them) of the voting populace in the right direction. I think it’s called leadership. So, time for a change? Well leaving political blushes aside, you could still do more than just doggedly stand on the barricades whilst the troops sweep past you. From tax reform to infrastructure, there are many actions that can be taken, but they also need to be made to be inspirational and aspirational -not just political. Wake up - it’s our country too! Clubs

New Malden Jazz Club W ho said Traditional Jazz is dead? It most certainly is not in New Malden

- or perhaps more accurately in Old Malden, where the New Malden Jazz Club holds its weekly meetings at The Manor, which is next to Malden Manor station. The club has been in existence for many years, starting life in the Railway Tavern (now The Glasshouse), moving to the Brewster (now The Willow Tree), and thence to The Berrylands Hotel in Surbiton before moving to its current home, where it has been comfortably established for several years. The regular band is the Magna Jazz Band, which has had a long and varied career since its formation in the middle 1950s by clarinettist Brian White. The band is

hugely experienced and has featured countless American musicians as guest stars during the lifetime of the club, and its members are known all over the world, thanks to personal visits and the many recordings they have made. They enjoy themselves so much that they would almost play for nothing, but of course they do incur expenses and so there is an admission charge. You will find that drinks are at normal pub prices. There is a warm atmosphere at The Manor, and the club members are always happy to welcome new friends into the family. The sessions are every Thursday, with the band kicking off the music at 8.30. Leisure

Be Poles Apart in Nonsuch Park

Picture a green wide-open space, sunshine

glimmering through trees, chatting and laughing with friends while exploring new places, stopping afterwards for a spot of refreshment. Does this paint a picture of the way to get slimmer, healthier and happier? Could this be the way to that elusive trim waist, peachy bottom or toned arms? Does this describe your typical exercise class? Not to most. But it does to a Nordic Walker. Here’s a few facts about a Nordic Walking class; You won’t: - Be expected to get your ankle around the back of your neck (or deal with the embarrassing side effects of the compromising position); - Have to drop and give me 20 (press-ups, pull-ups or any kind of ups); - Need to be super fit already - Be asked to wear Lycra, grind your hips, shake you’re booty or make some noise;

You will: - Burn Calories (up to 46% more calories than ordinary walking) and get fitter - Give your whole body a workout (as well as your motor skills); - De-stress – Green activities boost your mental health www.mind.org.uk/news/1795_go_green_to_beat_ the_blues); - Accessorize your outfit with a pair of Nordic Walking Poles (‘they are so now daahhhrling!’); - Get a healthy ‘Glow’; - make your heart healthier and beat faster (but I’m afraid it won’t be because George Clooney/Scarlett Johansson are attending); So what is it? Nordic Walking developed from cross-country skiing, it can be done on any terrain, flat or hilly, grass or tarmac. Although it uses similar movements and muscles as cross-country skiing, and similar poles, it isn’t skiing and doesn’t require ski’s or snow, not one flake! Nordic walking poles are placed behind you and used for propulsion (unlike Trekking). The poles effectively switch you to 4-wheel drive mode utilising your upper body to drive you forward whilst giving you a springy lengthened stride. By spreading the workload across the body often people don’t realise how hard they are working.

DO LIKE TALKING & WALKING? THEN TRY NORDIC WALKING AND MAKE YOUR WALK A FULL BODY WORKOUT Reasons to try it

Following a session I received an email from a Lady who was curious why her muscles were aching when she ‘hadn’t been working very hard’. I loved informing her that she’d been working really hard but hadn’t noticed because she was busy chatting, enjoying the surroundings and concentrating on perfecting her Technique. Nordic walking is a superb way to tone-up, lose weight, enjoy local Green Space and make new friends. It’s effective because it’s an all-round workout (it uses 90% of the skeletal muscles). It’s unusual because such a spectrum of people are seeing the benefits from those with medical problems to Athletes. It can be done by almost anyone, whatever age, fitness level or goal, because you can start at the level right for you and progress at the pace you choose, enjoying every stage. Tree care Bogus Tree Surgeons

In neighbouring areas there has been a spate of illegal “tree surgeons” accessing customers by cold calling on your doorstep or via mass leafleting. This article may help you in ensuring that the arborists you employ are legal, safe and proficient for the task in hand. A simple checklist is advised so you can screen the possible illegal operators:1. All tree surgeons must have licenses that are less than 5 years old. The main authority to train and issue the licenses are NPTC and LANTRA, for ground treeworks you must see CS30 and 31 licenses. Most treeworks require some climbing so higher level CS38 and 39 licenses are needed. If these cannot be shown to you then it is likely that

the operator is not insured or skilled to do any treeworks. I liken this to you employing a gas fitter at your home with no Gas Safe registration. At R J Tree Services we employ graduates that have a formal arboricultural qualification such as an Advanced Diploma in addition to these licenses. 2. Insurance cover for both public and employers liability must be presented to you. This covers you for any damage or injury that could occur on your land during the procedure. We have seen several instances of trees felled across fences etc where the “tree surgeon” could not climb the tree so took the risk of a straight fell rather than dismantle a tree in pieces. 3. A reputable company should be able to correctly identify your tree species and the appropriate time of the year for surgery, quite often we split works through the year in a garden so it maximises the health and vitality of a tree following surgery. A well informed website can confirm just how knowledgeable the advice given to you really is. 4. For surgery to trees the range of options should be explained to you with the benefits of each described clearly. This can range from crown lifts, crown thins, pollarding to crown reductions given

in percentage blocks of usually 10% . I dislike the term “lopping” which can often mean cutting off the top to a tree leaving no shape to the remaining crown!!! 5. Never accept a doorstep quote to be done the same day, this type of pressure selling is a form of bullying. The consequences of treeworks can last years so you need time to consider options and seek additional advice. 6. Never pay a deposit in advance of works or a part payment during works. Upon completion of the job a proper invoice should be presented to you. 7. Check that the workers on the day are properly equipped with the correct safety gear. This should include chainsaw trousers and boots, a helmet with ear muffs and a visor; if anyone appears in jeans and a ladder to access your tree the warning light should be on! Some recent scams in Berrylands have included a bogus tree surgeon taking the top out of a leylandii conifer and throwing the branches into a neighbours garden then collecting a cash payment before the angry neighbour turned up on the doorstep! A second example with a pensioner involved demands for extra cash payments after the job had been started because of “unforeseen circumstances”. My basic advise is for you to take your time in deciding works don’t be pressured on the doorstep by people you cannot verify can do the job, try to follow a recommendation and check all the licenses and insurance.

Voice for Wildlife by Carol Williams

P ut simply, ecology is the study of ecosystems. An ecosystem is any space that supports of variety

snap will have badly affected the spawn success rate. Such is Nature, which is why it is so very important that we do our best not to add further pressures to those that wildlife already faces from climate change and urban sprawl. The pond is the central feature of a small ecosystem which is a work in progress. Nature will rapidly move in and colonise a space as soon as the tiniest opportunity is offered, so it is not hard to begin, and, as you interact with the space, you learn -you become an amateur ecologist. An open compost heap is an ecosystem. It will be a place where a whole ‘civilisation’ of interdependent life forms co-exist, each one thriving because of the presence of the others. Larger animals, such as birds, hedgehogs and foxes will appreciate the food sources these heaps provide. Many nestlings need insect food, even if , as adults, they are seed eaters. This is because of the moisture content in invertebrate bodies. The young birds will dehydrate, and die, if fed only dry foods. So, a space which does not supply a good

of wildlife. Biodiverse ecosystems are those which are rich in plants and animals, such as a rainforest or coral reef. Anybody who cares about conservation or the environment is an amateur ecologist. Amateurs are those who love the thing that interests them. Often they are very knowledgeable in their subject, just not paid for working at it! All conservation charities and wildlife trusts rely heavily on volunteers - amateur naturalists and ecologists who are keen to ‘get stuck in’. Those few of us who care for the ecosystem that is the pond and surrounding area in Shadbolt Park are amateur wildlife enthusiasts. Early in March, during a brief mild spell, the frogs turned up at the pond to breed. The water was alive with their antics and croaking. Then came some bitter cold. At the time of writing I have no idea if the cold

variety of insect food - from compost heaps, hedges, leaf litter, trees and flowers -is rather sterile - it isn’t a thriving ecosystem. If you feed birds in your garden, offer mealworms during Spring. These will help breeding success when insect food is scarce or hard to find, due to frosts or drought. One very significant pressure on fledgelings is cat predation. Cats do not belong in the natural ecosystem of the UK. Their numbers mean they cause the deaths of about 8 million songbirds every year. On Springwatch last year, cat owners were asked to at least keep their pets in at night, because most of fledgeling kills occur in the early mornings. My own personal view is that cats should be kept indoors all the time, since they are pets, not wildlife. In today’s traffic, many are killed on the roads anyway, so perhaps a loved pet is best cherished indoors, exercised in an enclosed outdoor area or taken out on a lead. Our birds, frogs and small mammals would certainly benefit from this change. Understanding our own place in the ecology of this planet is key to our attitude to the other living organisms which share it with us. We need to realise that we depend on Nature for our survival. To be healthy,so it produces an abundance of food for us, it needs to be worked with, not against.Plants rely on insects for pollination, and the soil needs a constant recycling of organic matter, by microorganisms and useful creatures like worms, to remain productive. Poisons and other contaminants are a type of biocide and find their way into our own bodies via water, air and what we eat. Tidying up Nature, removing hedges, trees and flowers to make way for structures and leaving not the tiniest space for other creatures to find food and homes is something people do, thoughtlessly, all the time. And then we wonder where the bees and butterflies have gone, why there are so few sparrows now and why hedgehogs no longer visit our gardens. Ecology means understanding our connectedness to all that is, and respecting the value of the natural world around us. From picking up litter (which injures wildlife) to creating compost heaps and planting trees, each of us impacts on the environment. To be an ecologist is to realise this and act accordingly. I attended a workshop recently on Ecospirituality and one of the ideas suggested was a ‘sit spot’. You choose a place in a park, or your garden, and you sit quietly in it for about 15 minutes a day. All you do is sit, still and quiet, paying attention to the Nature around you. You will blend in, be a part of the place and you will begin to feel your connection. Hopefully it will inspire you to do that bit more to help the local wildlife. WPLife

Grow Your Own Veg by Pippa Greenwood A s the new gardening year is upon us, why not have a go at growing your own veg because it

doesn’t need to be difficult and has the potential to be one of the most productive and fun things you’ve ever done. Home grown food tastes better, uses little if any air miles, can save you a packet and is enormously rewarding because you’re getting the top end of the market produce. Remember to grow what you like and what your garden can grow well - this may take some experimenting, but don’t be afraid to admit that some things are trickier than others in your plot. If you’re an organic gardener or you simply want to produce pesticide free vegetables, you might need to spend more time thinking about what to grow and how you can best nurture it so that pests, diseases and other problems take a back seat. *Seed and plant catalogues are now more likely to let you know which varieties are relatively pest or disease resistant. *You can also encourage some of the naturally occurring insects that parasite or predate upon the garden pests, or bigger animals such as frogs, toads, hedgehogs and many birds. Insects include: Ladybirds: The larvae and the adults both consume huge numbers of aphids. Lacewings: The young or larvae are brilliant predators, eating mainly aphids, but also eating other pests such as thrips and eggs of moths. Hoverflies: The soft-bodied yellowy grey larvae are great aphid eaters, a single one eating up to fifty in a day, nearing 1,000 in its lifetime. Ground beetles: Often seen scuttling off at speed when you move pots, low-growing plants or loose slabs, they are mostly black and often shiny and are brilliant predators of many pests including slugs, vineweevils and some insect eggs. Solitary wasps: Some feed their larvae on aphids, weevils and other insects. Some of these may already be in your garden, but by growing some suitable plants you can really build up their numbers. On the whole the simple, non-double varieties are the most insect friendly, so try some of these: *Phacelia: A hardy annual with bluish perfumed flowers, perfect for direct sowing. *Limnanthes douglasii (the poached egg plant): This yellow and white flowered hardy annual is loved by hoverflies. *Eschscholzia (the Californian poppy): This pretty yellow, orange and cream flowered plant can be direct sown and thrives in sunny well-drained sites.

56

*Iberis (candytufts): One of the easiest hardy annuals, it has readily available pollen and nectar, perfect for many beneficial insects. The rewards are plentiful - a regular supply of superbly tasty vegetables, picked when ripened to perfection (not just to make them last longer on the supermarket shelf), gathered as and when you need them and in the quantities you need (cutting down on wastage) plus you can choose the varieties you find tastiest. Why not grow some great vegetables in 2013? Go to www. pippagreenwood.com and sign up for ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ – choose from a fantastic selection of vegetables sent to you at just the right time for planting and each week you receive an email from her telling you all you need to know to ensure great results. You can also sign up for Pippa’s newsletter and receive a free e-book on organic gardening, and buy a hand-picked selection of garden products. WPLife

Dad’s Diary by Ian Duncan “You know you are getting old when it takes too much effort to procrastinate” Anon Busy Doing Nothing So sorry there was no Dad’s Diary last month, that was the month when I was going to write it in good time but I kept putting it off, making cups of tea, toasting crumpets or doing something equally important. Apparently I’m not alone, there have been not one but two surveys recently that show that we Britons are really really good at procrastination. The results are really interesting and if I get around to it I’ll share them with you next month - the average Briton spends more than three years of their lives putting off tasks. Trying To Find Lots Of Things Not To Do The activities we are most keen to avoid are DIY; other domestic chores such as laundry, ironing and cleaning; as well as dealing with bills and household admin. Popular delaying tactics included having a cup of tea, having a smoke, pausing for a bite to eat and trips to the bathroom. In a survey of one thousand men and women, eighty seven percent said they regularly put off tasks until the last possible moment. It is further claimed we procrastinate for an average of one hour and seventeen minutes each day - or just under nine hours a week. That means we each spend more than nineteen full days each year avoiding essential tasks, which over a lifetime stretches out to one thousand, one hundred and forty days. We’re Busy Going Nowhere It would appear that as a nation we are world class at putting jobs off until the very last minute and it’s quite ingenious how we are able to come up with excuse after excuse to convince ourselves we are too busy. Shockingly, we priortise of tea, cigarette and lunch breaks over the job that needs to be completed. Suddenly other non-essential tasks such as watering plants and sorting out the sock draw became urgent priorities ahead of the essential task we should be concentrating on. We’d Like To Be Unhappy Psychology Today identifies three basic types of procrastinators: 1. Thrill-seekers, who wait to the last minute for the euphoric rush. 2. Avoiders, who may be avoiding fear of failure or even fear of success but in either case are very concerned

58

with what others think of them; they would rather have others think they lack effort than ability. 3. Decisional procrastinators, who cannot make a decision. Not making a decision absolves procrastinators of responsibility for the outcome of events. But We Never Do Have The Time. I’m not sure which of these three applies to me but I do know that I’m going to check my emails and make a cup of tea before I decide – tomorrow. WPLife

Safer Neighbourhoods by PCSO Gary Weaving

Cannabis factories can be set up in literally

ANY dwelling. With the correct equipment and knowhow they can be up and running in no time and remain undetected for a long time. We all have a part to play in helping to protect society (and ourselves) from the people who cultivate and supply drugs. Drugs can ruin lives and inhibit the productivity of our countries work force. Cannabis factories inflate our utility bills. They require a very large electricity usage and those who initiate them usually bypass the electricity meter and tap straight into the mains. This is highly dangerous and the cost of this practice will eventually be passed down to those of us who pay our bills. They can cause hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of damage to people’s properties, as the factories are usually set up in rented accommodation. Large holes are made in walls and ceilings to accommodate the ventilation, heating and lighting that cannabis plants require,

so if you are renting a property, be sure of who you are renting it to. There are certain things we can easily watch for, certain signs that may mean a nearby house or flat is a cannabis factory. 1. Has the property been available to let recently? 2. Do the curtains appear to be closed all the time or screens pulled down? 3. Is there condensation on the windows? 4. Do odd people attend the address spasmodically? 5. If next door, is the internal connecting wall unusually warm? 6. If you can view the rear of the property, are there bags of potting compost piling up either in the compost bags or bin liners? 7. Are there flower pots lying around, empty, or with compacted soil in them? 8. Can you detect a herbal type smell? 9. Have you noticed a dull humming sound (Fans are used for ventilation). If you notice any of these signs, or anything else that arouses your suspicions, please do not hesitate to call your Neighbourhood Police Team.
