Welcome to

our June edition Dear All,

Having baked cakes, blown up balloons, hung up banners and organized numerous party games over the past few weeks (why is it that everyone’s birthday in my family falls so close together?) it will finally be my turn to celebrate the passing of another year later this month and, as ever, will look forward to toasting the ‘big day’ with my lovely husband, girls and a few local chums (not to mention our feathered, egg-laying friends at the end of the garden!). I’ve always loved the fact that my birthday is exactly 6 months before - and 6 months after Christmas (depending on which way you choose to look it at!). However, these days, I prefer to focus on the positive fact that I was born pretty much ‘slap bang’ in the [official] middle of Summer (although it was a great deal warmer in Cyprus where I was born the day I entered the world!). This means I usually get to sit out in the garden and take in the warmth of the British sunshine for at least part of my special day and remind myself how lucky we are to live in such a pretty suburb.

However, as we all know, it’s surely also one of London’s busiest and most community-minded suburbs, as June also signals the build up Malden Fortnight. No sooner will the first ball of the tournament have been served at Wimbledon, us members of the MF Committee will be working hard behind the scenes to put the finishing touches to our forthcoming fortnight of fun (see inside for more details about the wide range of events and activities on this year’s packed programme). As we enter the last half term of the school calendar (particularly relevant for those children, parents and teachers among our readership), there will be many fun activities to look forward to, including school trips, sports days, end of year discos and, of course, the many, annual summer fair’s already popping up across the area. Who said school days weren’t the best days of your life, eh? On a more serious note, I know lots of our friends and neighbours are suffering especially badly with hayfever this season. It seems certain types of pollen are unusually high at the moment, so do take care of yourselves and make sure you’re stocked up with the appropriate medication. We’re lucky to have fantastic

4

and highly trained pharmacists on our High Street who can give you some great, instant advice, so don’t suffer in silence if you find yourself succumbing to the snuffles and symptoms associated with hayfever. And, a final message goes out to all our teens (and preteens) sitting school exams this month. The very best of luck from us all at the Village Voice and just remember, this time next month, it will nearly all be over and you’ll looking forward to that lovely long summer holiday! Jenny Stuart, Editor & publisher p.s. Please remember to mention the Village Voice when replying to adverts and get in touch by 17th June if you’d like your business, Club or event to feature in the July edition(s).

Events

Malden Fortnight Saturday 6th July– Sunday 21st July Although the Festival takes place during the first two weeks of July, much planning is needed to ensure we have an entertaining and interesting number of events and to enable schools and all participants to have enough time to organise participation in these events, especially the Parade of Floats on Saturday 6th July. This year’s Parade theme is ‘Country Life’ and we are hoping our participants will use a broad palate when coming up with ideas for their walkers and floats, from butter to tractors, magazines to vegetables – all will be welcome. Last year’s events were particularly successful with a sold out High Street Craft Fair, a much increased participation in the Parade, a fully attended Dog Show, sold out Music concerts, children’s Day of Performance, not to mention the marvellous Fun Day. We are building on last year’s success and including extra events such as a historical walking tour and a Fun Run. As usual, we are inviting all Junior and Infant Schools to enter our ‘Design a Logo’ Competition on the ‘Country Life’ theme, the winner of which will see their design used as the promotional poster for the Fortnight. The winner and two runner ups all receive a cash prize along with the schools themselves. The events are organised by the Malden Fortnight Festival Committee, composed of local voluntary members. It has been run for the last 29 years and is now an integral part of local event planning. It is important to stress that the aim of the Fortnight is to celebrate our local community. We are always on the lookout for new members, from any walk of life, who will be able to bring new ideas to the table or even be able to help in a practical manner. We are currently looking for a new Treasurer and organiser for the Craft Fair. The majority of our events are either self-funded, i.e. raising income from sales of tickets, or from sponsorship. Whilst we are particularly proud and grateful to our sponsors this year, we are always interested in new sponsors, especially local businesses, to help improve both the number and quality of the events. We also help to organise, along with New Malden Rotary, the Christmas Parade/Lights on the last Friday in November. We would like to give a big thank you to all the local businesses, individuals and organisations

that helped raise the funds necessary to purchase and install the new Christmas Lights, they were spectacular. This year’s event was the most successful ever, with over 400 children meeting Father Christmas in St. George’s Square. Those of you have participated in our events in the past and wish to do so again can contact us through our website, www.maldenfortnight.co.uk where there are online application forms for the Craft Fair, Parade and 2 brand new events - the Fun Run and Historical Tour. I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible participate in or enjoy the Malden Fortnight. Peter Findlater, Chairman – Malden Fortnight.

“Charity begins at home” but do we really mean in our own home? Do we mean our community? Do we mean our village, town or city? No matter our definition of this statement we all believe in helping others and feeling good about it. Sarah is 7 years old and has just learned her dad is not coming home ever again. Whilst he was serving in the Armed Forces, protecting those whose freedoms and country was under attack, her dad was killed. Sarah’s family will need support in coping with their loss. Jordan’s dad serves in the Armed Forces. He has not seen his dad for 2 years. Now he knows his dad is coming home in the next few weeks. His dad will need help to resettle into civilian life, return to work or start his own business. The Royal British Legion has since 1921 helped those in the Armed Forces and their families, supporting exservicemen and women and those currently serving on active duty. Volunteers Required Feel good about yourself and what you do. Come and help us continue the support we offer to the exservicemen and women, their families and those currently on active duty within the Armed Forces. You do not need to have a connection with the armed forces to volunteer for The Royal British Legion. All you need is a desire to help those who really need it most. New Malden History Malden miscellaneous

SVillage ometimes when researching for articles for the Voice, I hear about little stories which are

interesting in their own right, but don’t seem to fit in anywhere. One such instance was the case of Charles Haffenden, and the ladies of Rutland Lodge. These were the Ramie sisters born on Jersey, who came to New Malden in the 1870s with their parents. Home was Rutland Lodge, a building which stood on Kingston Road between Westbury Road and South Lane (approximately where Grayham Road stands). Charles Ramie an architect, inventor and engineer, died in 1888 leaving his widow and two daughters well provided for. Charles Haffenden was a labourer living in Sheephouse Lane Malden (now Sheephouse Way), who was married with four children. He had fallen on hard times, and had turned to drink, and Marian Ramie in her capacity as a district visitor on behalf of Christ Church, had taken it on herself to reform him ,and was successful in getting Haffenden to “sign the pledge” (abstaining from alcohol). Haffenden however, felt

there was more to the relationship than helping him to reform, and constantly followed Marian around New Malden. But in September 1897 Marian and her younger sister Julia bought bicycles, and Haffenden became upset as he thought that the machines would take Marian away from him. He threatened to wreck the vehicles, and was true to his word, breaking into Rutland Lodge, and cutting the tyres and saddles with a knife. Taken to court, he said he had received over fifty letters from Miss Ramie, but these were shown to be notes to calm him, after he had constantly threatened and intimidated her. The Reverend Challacombe (Christ Church) was called as a witness, and stated that Haffenden had been seen in the grounds of the house after dark, and he did not think that he was able to control his emotions. Haffenden was found guilty of breaking into the property, and causing damage to the value of £7, and given two months hard labour. The sisters and their mother soon moved out of the area to Ruislip, where a few years later Julia was to marry William Augustus Tilden (later Sir William) a renowned chemist and Vice President of the Royal Society. Back in Malden, the family suffered and Charles’s wife Eliza died in the workhouse in Kingston in 1900. The story does not end there, in June 1932 Malden’s original fountain was knocked down for the second and final time, and in the evening the pile of rubble which had been Malden’s prize possession was surrounded by a circle of workmen’s lamps with a watchman sitting in the middle on guard to deter pilferers. That watchman was Charles Haffenden then in his late 70s. He suffered an accident the second night of his watch, when he fell against a brazier, which in turn fell on an oilcan setting fire to a tarpaulin. Trying to put out the fire he was badly burnt on his hands and face and after treatment at the police station was taken to Kingston Hospital. The report does

not state if there was any alcohol involved. Bottles and birds The Reverend William Allen Challacombe was the minister at Christ Church from 1893 to 1920, for the first half of his ministry he was heavily involved in raising money for the building of additional parish buildings. Firstly a parish room in the form of an iron building was built alongside the church in 1900, then St James Church in Burlington Road on 1903. Money was raised by the vicar’s “Million Penny Fund” (It is worth noting that a million old pennies totals £4,166, a great amount when the cost of building St James was “just” £1,025). Most of the money came from donations, bazaars, and sales of work. At one of these bazaars, a stall consisted of dark bottles filled with various liquids. Competitors had to guess the contents purely by the smell (Present day Health and Safety would have had something to say I’m sure). Amongst items the Reverend had for sale, were a

canary cage, and a cage for a parrot, the proceeds towards the fund. These cages may have made part of the thirty or more that were ceremoniously burnt over 15 years later in the playground of the school in Elm Road in the presence of 200 children who afterwards sang the National Anthem. Most of these cages had come from a new pet shop recently opened in New Malden. All had been bought by Mrs Emily Nelson of Sans Souci in Kingston Road (now White House Dental Practice). Mrs Nelson the superintendent of the Malden Band Of Mercy (Young Section Of SPCA) had released all the birds. The simple “service” at the school was to teach the children about kindness to animals. Perhaps the actions of similar like minded people have contributed to the number of green parakeets flying locally nowadays.

Courting the defendant Kate Gradden had a difficult upbringing, born in Wimbledon in 1880, her father died when she was three, and she was brought up by her mother and three brothers. She moved to Queens Road New Malden when she became pregnant, and gave birth to a daughter in 1903 who she called Annie after her mother. Problems started early in 1908, when Kate walked into New Malden police station to confess to giving carbolic oil to her daughter, and then taking it herself. Carbolic oil was commonly used on sore arms and legs. Kate said she had intended to murder her daughter, and then commit suicide. Fortunately, Dr Porter the surgeon could find no trace of the substance in the child, and concluded that the amount taken by either party must have been very small. Kate was suffering from depression and loss of memory, and was remanded by the magistrates at Kingston County Court. When the case went back to court, the police offered no further evidence, and after promising that she would not repeat her actions the case was dismissed. When the initial case was heard, a gentleman called Arthur Clapp was present in court, and immediately fell in love with Kate promising to marry her. With a little encouragement the two parties spent time together, and a wedding took place within a couple

of months with the court missionary acting as witness. They went back to Queens Road to live as a family. I would love to say this story had a happy ending, but I subsequently found an entry to say that Kate died at Queens Road six months later. I doubt it was suicide as she was buried in consecrated ground in Bonner Hill Cemetery with the service conducted by a local vicar. Run over in a good cause Malden men are good at inventing things. When Mr Daniel Sweeney of The Market Place and Mr William Gooding of Burlington Road got an idea, they weren’t afraid of testing that it worked. The invention in question was a lifeguard or “cow catcher” for motor buses. This was a steel wire screen attached to the front of the bus. The screen was about 7 foot wide and 3½ foot deep, with similar screens in front of the two back wheels, at the bottom of the screen was a fender. When an object or person touched the screen, it swung inward exposing the fender which was attached to the ground by rollers. The object or person was swept up by this fender and carried until the bus stopped. A pressure of only 3 lbs was needed to make the apparatus work, and the fender could carry up to 18 stone. So, about 10 o’clock on a Saturday morning in August 1913 a bus in Camberwell was fitted with the guard,

and Mr Sweeney positioned himself in the middle of the road as the bus approached at 12 to 16mph. As the bus neared him Sweeney walked across the road, and the guard hit him. The system worked perfectly, and he was safely transported in the fender along the road as the bus halted. The test was repeated again in Camberwell, and later on the streets of Pimlico, in all Mr Sweeney was “knocked down” eight times and survived with only minor cuts. There were plans to take the demonstration to Mansion House and Trafalgar Square, but it was thought that the number already undertaken were sufficient to prove the invention’s worth. It should be mentioned that on one of the tests in Pimlico, Mr Sweeney was nearly knocked down by a car before he was knocked down and picked up by the bus! Sadly, front lifeguards were never fitted onto London buses, although for a short time guards were fitted to the side of some vehicles. Mr Gooding and Mr Sweeney’s patent still remains and it seems a shame after literally risking so much, the idea was not taken up. Neither man suffered any ill effects from their efforts, with both living into their seventies.

View from the City Tax & Recovery?

by Justin Urquhart Stewart

London taxes No not black cabs, but rather a thought from our Mayor Boris that London needs more taxes to pay for its burgeoning costs of growth and more to the point redevelopment of its grand but ageing infrastructure. The thought would be that London could have transferred to it revenue raising powers potentially of more than £12bn – which to put into proportion, is about 12% of the national amount raised for VAT. Apparently this is part of a more radical development to try and transfer more powers to the regional cities to allow them greater local control and the ability to raise their own debt. Now hang on – there is nothing new about this. I remember in days gone by a certain Mrs Thatcher stamping out the ability of local authorities to raise debt and forcing those same local authorities to get it under control. The local authority bonds always used to be a regular holding in old portfolios as almost junior gilts paying quite a healthy yield. Mrs T saw these funds though as a means of propping up inefficient small local authorities unable to get any of the benefits of scale. The taxes now envisaged could include a tourism tax - great in theory to pay for better tourism facilities but actually I have never found that paying more tax has been a great major pull to attract more tourists. Inevitably this is going to mean the weight of tax falling on residents and businesses. Boris needs to be careful not to push business away. What could be more appealing though is the greater emphasis being put on allowing borrowing for the increased provision of house building. This is something which should be addressed not just in London but throughout the nation as a strategic investment in the future.

in the equity markets. From the nadir and “slough of despond” of 2009, UK blue-chip shares have risen 116%, including reinvestment of dividends and US blue-chips have risen some 161%. Even in the much maligned euro zone, the German Dax index has passed its all time high last week. So is this a sign that all is fine and dandy and that we can at last relax? Well in investment markets I don’t believe you can ever relax – remember the mantra of the Buffett here – buy when others are nervous and sell when others are complacent. Well I don’t think we have reached complacency yet but certainly there has been a level of relief that the global economy, whilst not exactly in fine fettle is at least healing from its financial heart attack. When looking at companies though, Chris makes a good point when he says there may be a simple explanation: more buyers than sellers. “ Normally, in a deep and long-lasting recession, companies struggle to stay in business and have to ask their shareholders for more capital. This increases the supply of shares and should, all else being equal, reduce the price. Since the credit crunch, however, and partly due to low interest payments, many large companies have actually been flush with cash and able

companies have actually been flush with cash and able to buy back their own shares. ” So less stock more cash? The chart below shows the difference in the value of shares issued by US companies and shares bought back by US companies. Over the past five years, US companies have bought back $1.5 trillion more in stock than has been issued. Representing about 12% of the average value of the entire US stock market. Source: BCA Research Additionally, when we look at the outlook for earnings then confidence for companies on the main indices is certainly increasing. The change comes when the outlook becomes murkier and whilst there is still quite a lot of murk around, at least you can see where the money is being made. Behind this though we must remember that all of this has been supported by the financial heroin of QE which has been the fuel for our all time highs – thus time to also recall that following QE heroin, we will in time also suffer QE cold turkey. However this will not happen in the short term. A usterity to Growth? As the G7 met last weekend the words seem to change emphasis from just austerity into something more encouraging. Certainly with a little more confidence from our leaders, the UK could see some improvements later this year. For example take a look at Spain’s exports being up (not just my consumption of Rioja) and a current account balance recovering from -10% in 2007 to around zero today and we can see some better figures. Additionally the “re-shoring” I have been talking about is certainly adding greater numbers to the manufacturing workforce and in some surprising areas. Not just the fashionable west coast but the old “rust belt” from Michigan to Tennessee is also attracting a Source: BCA Research

number of new recruits with 123,000 jobs filled in the automobile industry since 2010, and a further 100,00 in mining and logging. Well you can almost hear those banjos going. Family Funday

7th July

"I am going to win the welly throwing trophy this year! " said 10 year old Charlie. Mum was in the winning adult tug of war last year and his little brother came away with a junior tug of war medal, so he is determined to have his name added to those engraved on the Funday Sunday trophies, which are kindly sponsored by the Malden Centre and Toms Trophies. These competitions as well as a number of fabulous races for all the family are all part of the 'fun' of Funday in Beverley Park, this year being held on Sunday, 7th July as part of the Malden Fortnight. Alongside the tug of war, welly throwing and races, you can also enjoy our bar and pimms tent which this year is also serving cocktails and mocktails! and sample something from the BBQ or later in the day , have a cup of tea and cake! This year, we have at least two new additions to this great local event in aid of the Lunchbowl Network , a small, local charity with no paid staff, which feeds and cares for orphans in the kibera slum,Kenya.

RELIABLE

Korea Foods are going to serve delicious korean food, donating all the profits to lunchbowl, we are incredibly grateful for their involvement and it will be wonderful to sample their amazing fare and hopefully bring Korean food to a wider audience. As well as this, we have an indulgence tent where ladies from Radiance beauty salon will be massaging and minifacial-ing! any competitor's sore muscles or ladies who'd rather have a bit of pampering. Everything raised in the indulgence tent will be donated to lunchbowl. In addition, Radiance are also selling goody bags which contain beauty samples and a favour. Everyone is a winner, as Inside each favour is a beauty voucher entitling the recipient to a treatment at the salon, with the smallest prize being worth £18! The whole day has something for everyone and our wonderful compere, Andy Ross of Suttles Stationers, will lead you through all the events which you can sign up for on the day, but you can check our website www. lunchbowl.org to check the race schedule beforehand. The day kicks off at 12-4pm. All monies raised are sent to care for the orphans ( with 33p feeding a child a hot nutritious meal )and with Barclays Bank wonderfully match-funding the event, we hope to have a wonderful day of fun for all the family as well as changing the lives of children who so need our help. Thank you New Malden and look forward to seeing you on the 7th! VVoice

My Search for Mr Norris

Iperformance love tools! specifically old tools, their and quality cannot be matched.

They're in my blood along with sawdust. I am a woodworker always have been. After serving my apprenticeship in Scotland in the 1980's, I made my way to the U.S. where I continue to ply my trade today. Getting back to the tool part. I discovered an old English hand plane about 20 years ago at a flea market, It was 5,500 miles from home. It was marked Norris London. I was fair smitten by the look of the thing, the balance, heft , quality and the way the curly shavings just rolled up. It got me wanting more and thinking. "who was the maker , who was Thomas James Norris?" So my search began.....

The story starts in Lambeth and ends in New Malden. The Norris family originally hailed from york street, Thomas James Norris worked for his father in the family company of Thomas Norris and son. They made and retailed their tools not far from Waterloo station. Thomas senior died in 1906, Thomas junior was ready for a fresh start, he moved to New Malden in 1907. He bought a House in Sycamore grove, #3, It was called Albion house whose name he changed to Marazion before they had street numbers. He married for the only time at the mature age of 49 in 1909. He flourished in New Malden, making arguably the best planes in the world literally in the back garden. Selling all over the Empire and beyond. Thomas Jr died in 1936, his widow Helen (Nell) continued to run the company up until the early years of the war. I am appealing for any information about the firm, the tools, family, factory, or the Norris' themselves, no matter how trivial, any remembrance at all, I would love to find any old photographs of Sycamore grove and the holy grail which would be a photograph of the man himself. The Better Life Mr Green in the Conservatory

A leaky, uninsulated porch is a friend to no one. But a demolished porch replaced by a mini-conservatory =

firewood + bricks + glass for cold frames + indoor space for more plants (especially welcome since our greenhouse had to go). “So what do you think?” Anne pointed to her makeshift plan on the kitchen table. I thought we could fit at least a dozen plants on the shelves, plus five trays of seedlings on the floor, and still be able to sit down. That humble pencil and paper outline was the beginning, but it was a long and fretful journey to the finished conservatory. Low points included our builders doing a two-week vanishing act, them breaking the lid on our chiminea on the first day, and failing to put up 90-degree angle walls - twice. The wood and glass conservatory, however, was - and is - spectacular. Mind you, someone else supplied it. And, once the floor was tiled and those tantalising shelves were slated, we were ready to go.

26

The cat was the first visitor to the conservatory and, to be honest, didn’t seem that impressed (although she didn’t know how much we’d borrowed to pay for it). Operation Hothouse went into action. We started with surprise tomato plants - in that they turned out to be a yellow variety - swiftly followed by Fasold green beans and Kennedy mange tout. The results were impressive, but top billing went to the California Wonder sweet peppers. Never having grown them before, I erred on the side of excess and planted 16. The 12 that thrived also gave us

Please remember to mention the Village Voice when you speak to our advertisers

ample camouflage from walkers who passed up the lane. As the peppers grew - and believe me, they grew a lot - we harvested, swapped and even froze a few (depipped and sliced first). And still they kept coming. On rare, hot days, the room smelt like a sweet pepper sauna. I became so convinced of the conservatory’s powers that I brought in the sweet potato plant, which was ailing. It rallied a little, but when it came to harvest time I felt that the label’s bumper crop guaranteed had overstated the case. Seven sweet potatoes might be good for one plant, but not if they’re all the size of a 20p piece. Naturally, we need to water everything regularly and employ judicious temperature control with the windows. Which also means that flies and wasps are frequent visitors. But hey, that’s nature for you. And it’s a dinner guest or two for the spiders, which moved in almost immediately. Going forward, we want to reduce volume and increase variety (because even home-grown peppers can become a little samey). Chilli peppers are next - I’d love to grow Bhut Jolokia - reputed to be the world’s hottest chillies. Anne is a tomatophile (I like the plants, but can’t stand the taste of the fruit), so we’ll definitely look a mixture of plentiful and interesting. The conservatory has already been nursemaid to a range of herbs and seedlings. It’s not only an extension of the house, but also an extension of our lifestyle. Anne would like more space to sit down in comfort. Or, at the very least, be able to find the cat among the indoor undergrowth. By Derek Thompson VVoice

History

The Maldens And Coombe Heritage Society Tits hemembership Society which was formed in June 2012 and has increased steadily and now

stands at over thirty. We meet regularly on a monthly basis at New Malden Baptist Church in Kingston Road. The meetings are usually on the last Wednesday of the month at 7pm and last for about two hours. It is advisable to confirm the date of the next meeting by contacting Mary Clark 0208 949 3157 or Robin Gill robinislander@hotmail. com The object of the organisation is to promote awareness of the Maldens and Coombe and its rich history and to compile an archive of that history. To that effect we started a “Recollections” project led by Julian McCarthy our archivist, who is very busy encouraging anyone who has lived in the area to put down on paper or discuss with him, their memories of the district. These will placed in small booklets to encourage other recollections. Julian can be contacted at 52 Blagdon Road, New Malden, KT3 4AE. Another project, this one led by Chris Coke, is to obtain memories of Ann Packer. Ann won a gold medal at the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 1964 competing in the 800 metres. She is a former teacher at Coombe Girls School and Chris would like to make contact with any former teachers and pupils who remember Ann. She now lives in Cheshire with her husband Robbie Brightwell, who was captain of the Great Britain Men’s Team at the same Olympics. He is also a former teacher at Tiffin Boys School in Kingston. Further projects being undertaken by members include the history behind the names on our war memorial by Graeme Hodge, and the history of New Malden Baptist Church by Shaan Butters. I am sure that Graeme and Shaan would appreciate any information that you can give them. Most of these projects are organised by these individuals, with the society being there to lend a hand when needed. Speakers at our recent meetings have included Amy Graham on the 213 bus route, and Richard Holmes on local pubs. These are ongoing projects, and both Amy and Richard would love to hear from anyone with information on either of the subjects (they can be contacted via the Society). At these meetings we try to assist members with their own research, whether local, or family history and

28

we set aside a certain time for questions, discussion, and advice during the evening. We also encourage members to bring in and share documents and photographs relating to the history of the local area. Jim Reilly, one of members is currently developing a website for the Society, which we are hoping will be up and running shortly. We have been lucky enough to have received guided tours of New Malden Library conducted by John Jones (Customer Services Supervisor) and we hope to organise further tours in the future Recently we had a stall at the Farmers Market in St Georges Square, where we were able to distribute leaflets, and talk to interested parties about the Society. We are hoping that this will result in an increased awareness of the Heritage Group, and an increase in our membership. So, as you can see we are a varied group, if you are interested in local history and would like to learn about the Maldens and Coombe, please come along to one of our meetings. VVoice

Spotlight on Dr Leonard Sherski D

r Leornard Sherski, a spritely 78 year old, is a present-day Dr Finlay of New Malden. Voted as Kingston’s Best Doctor in 2007, he is debonair, a pillar of the community with a mischievous twinkle in the eye. Loved by all, he has a natural talent for putting patients at total ease where he says he’s been at the Groves for so long “a lot of my patients have just got old with me”. Did you always want to be a doctor? As a boy I did have a fleeting idea I wanted to be a vet. I used to spend a lot of time with my uncle, Leonard Abrahamson. He was a professor of medicine in Dublin and he bought the first ECG machine in Ireland. So I come from a medical family and it’s very much in the blood. I was inspired by him and it seemed only natural that I became a doctor. Where did you train and have you specialised? I was born and educated in Northern Ireland. I qualified in medicine from Queen’s University, Belfast. I decided to focus on general practice (GP) as this was more challenging with a broader spectrum on family medicine. My specialisation or focus today is heart and hypertension conditions. I see myself more as a geriatrician than a paediatrician these days. What was it like living in Northern Ireland? It was very difficult as I worked in a mixed practice close to the Shankill and Falls area with a lot of night duty. I suppose I ‘just adapted’ although I was concerned as I had a very young family. I didn’t live in fear so much but I do remember one particular incident that made me think we needed to leave. I was called out one night to an emergency and had to walk through the barricades with masked men armed with guns. I heard a voice say ‘that’s Dr Sherski let him through’. I knew I didn’t want to be a part of this – they knew who I was but I didn’t know who they were. What is your most memorable and happiest event? Apart from the day I got married, it was the day I accepted the job as a partner at the Groves and we all moved to New Malden in 1974. I answered an advert in the back of the British Medical Journal and the rest is history. Have you seen many changes in New Malden? There certainly has been a ‘population change’ and the face of New Malden seems to have been damaged by Kingston’s more popular shopping centre. I think it’s a great shame there aren’t more ‘character’ local shops. Our

30

favourite shop was Canning’s, toy and book shop – just opposite the post office. My children would spend hours in there. Perhaps that’s why my daughter is now a director of a toy company! What is your view of family medicine today? Family medicine today is disappearing. In a busy practice like the Groves we have teams of rotating doctors and nurses and it’s difficult to get to know each patient as well. In so many ways doctors are becoming deskilled because of ‘fragmentation’ and bureaucracy. Also, education is very different where there is less emphasis on ‘people skills’ and more on the academic qualifications of medical staff. Perhaps the training is more superior in some ways but the ‘holistic approach’ to medicine is not well taught and the transition away from the traditional values of family medicine is unfortunately inevitable. Are you restricted by the amount of time you have with your patients? ‘Time is money’ is a big issue. It used to be that funding was based on the number of doctors in the practice and the volume of registered patients. Because I have ‘grown old’ with most of my patients ‘I know their background’; where I see it necessary I ensure they book a double appointment so we have ‘time to talk’ and I can treat them without rushing. I believe it’s important to give them the time they need. Do you find it difficult making decisions over expensive prescriptions? I have to be mindful of the guidelines by NICE and the budget constraints within the Practice. Funding is challenging as there is not an exhaustible supply of money. We do use the more ‘generic drugs’ as a rule but some health conditions mandate the use of the more ‘branded’ drugs that can be expensive. I always attempt to base my decision on bioavailability and practicalities again this can be expensive. However, I have no qualms in writing prescriptions for what I see as best for the patient. Looking back would you do anything differently? If I had to start over again I would still want to do medicine. Back in 1963, the year of the big freeze, I was a doctor and assistant surgeon on a ship. I did two big trips that took assisted passengers for £10 to Australia. I enjoyed travelling around the world and I did get the bug for travel. So at 78, do you have any unfulfilled ambitions and what are your plans for retirement? I have a passion for antiques and hope to travel more. We go once a year to visit my wife’s family in Greece. We also have plans to visit St Petersburg this year and to enjoy more city breaks in Europe. My wife and I just love supporting local theatre –Richmond Theatre and the Rose. It’s likely my retirement will be spent with my grandchildren and doing more babysitting - I am expecting my third grandchild at the end of May! Interview by Yee-Liu Williams VVoice

side until golden. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on kitchen paper. Meanwhile, place the sliced peppers on a foil-lined grill pan and drizzle over the olive oil. Grill for 3-4 minutes on each side until tender and lightly charred in places. Toss together the salad leaves and shredded iceberg lettuce. Arrange on four plates with the grilled peppers. Halve the hot falafel then add to the salad and top with roughly crumbled goats’ cheese. To make the dressing, place all the ingredients in a screw-topped jar and season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Pour the dressing over the salad and serve immediately. Tip Add a handful of fruity black or green olives to the salad or sprinkle with some lightly toasted pine nuts to give an extra Mediterranean flavour. VVoice

Bugs and Beasties by Pippa Greenwood B ugs and beasties are really thriving in this warmer weather, so just how should you deal with the most common problems you are likely to encounter at this time of year?

Aphids Greenfly and blackfly, also known as aphids, can be a real menace as they suck sap from your plants and can transmit viruses at the same time. Aphids breed incredibly rapidly, so regular control is necessary. - Check plants regularly and either spray with a suitable insecticide or a soap or plant oil based insecticide - Use biological controls – they’re totally safe for all other creatures and of course leave no residues - Use a strong jet of water to blast the aphids off plants, but do a thorough job or else they will soon be back up and causing damage Caterpillars Caterpillars come in all shapes, sizes and colours, but can do a lot of damage as they munch their way through your plants and perhaps even into your vegetables. - Hand pick the pest where possible and either squash or place on the bird table. They’re easiest to spot at dusk or very early in the morning. - Spray with a suitable contact insecticide or better still use the Nemasys Caterpillar biological control. - Some caterpillars, in particular the Tortrix Moth produce quantities of fine webbing which they use to bind leaves or other plant parts together to create particularly safe shelters for themselves. It’s hard for a pesticide to actually reach them so hand picking or squashing is often the best answer. - Cover caterpillar-susceptible crops such as calabrese, broccoli and other brassicas with Envirofleece or Enviromesh. Woodlice Woodlice often cause a lot of concern, however these little creatures are rarely responsible as they simply do not have adequately strong mouthparts. They can cause damage to soft new growth or occasionally to soft-fleshed fruits such as strawberries but can’t tackle tougher plant growth. You may see them at the ‘scene of the crime’ and presume that they have caused the initial damage but they have probably moved in to clean up a lot of the debris created by other creatures. Earwigs Earwigs can cause quite a bit of damage, particularly on the flowers of plants such as clematis and dahlias, where they nibble out large quantities of petal or occasionally leaf. Try trapping them using an inverted flowerpot on top of a bamboo cane. The bamboo cane

42

and pot should be positioned amongst susceptible plants and the pot needs to be stuffed loosely full of hay, straw or similar material. The earwigs climb in there to hide and the pots can them simply be emptied out on a regular basis. Mildew Powdery mildew is also a problem at this time of year; it coats plant leaves, stems, buds and sometimes even petals with a white floury deposit. Sometimes the mildew can also prevent fruits from swelling normally, cause the leaves to become distorted and even fall early. Prompt action is essential and if you wish you can use a proprietary fungicide but check the label carefully for suitability. Keep the damage to a minimum in the first instance by ensuring that the plants are kept well watered. In addition try to ensure a good flow of air around the plants. A bit of careful pruning or weeding often helps too. Techno Blog High Street Hi-fi – Dead or Alive? Perhaps I’m being a little over dramatic with the

title, but given the amount of column inches and discussion that has taken place on the subject, you’d be forgiven for thinking that Unilet’s fate had already been sealed, and along with the Dodo, the dinosaurs and long hot summers, we would soon simply become another “Whatever happened to ...” footnote in history. I want to show that Unilet is still relevant in 2013, and beyond. We’re not unique; other shops such as Infidelity, Graham’s Hi Fi, Billy Vee, Oranges & Lemons and the like have Keith confirms that reports of the death of the hi-fi specialist have been greatly exaggerated. been occupying the same ground for many years However, retail hi-fi stores have undoubtedly

dwindled recently, begging the question, why ? Is it where we are, who we are, what we sell, how we sell it, or is it simply the elephant in the room- Price? The internet is widely blamed for the demise of the high street shops, based on the assumption that price is the one and only factor the public consider. If that were the case, I suspect none of the above establishments, including ourselves would have much of a future. However, we continue to survive and whilst independent shops will always try to be competitive with pricing, we’ll never be the cheapest. So, how can we ensure our future and more to the point, do you think we have a future which is relevant to you? I think the most lucid comment on the High Street came from one of the senior managers of Curry’s Digital, who said that “the buying public want the right product at the right price, regardless of where they buy it from.” A simple enough statement on the face of it, but if for a moment we take 45 17217 Brandmakers Unilet The Volume 35-76.indd 45 30/04/2013 15:15 price out of the equation, this leaves us with “the right product” Having decided that you’re going to buy something, is the first thing you think of actually its price, or is it its size, colour, shape, quality, desirability etc. then price? Which leads us neatly onto Value! It’s often been said that some people know the cost of everything and the value of nothing. customers have come into us with price supposedly at the top of their list of priorities, only to relegate it down the list after speaking to us. They realise that other values are indeed, more important. The other long term consequence of the public buying solely on price is the effect on both the general quality of goods and a company’s ability to support their products many years after it has ceased production of it. More products are being built to a price, not a standard, which slowly, but inevitably reduces overall quality despite improvements in technology and manufacturing techniques. Companies are then also forced to keep fewer spare parts for a shorter period so when you take your beloved item to get it repaired, don’t be surprised if the phrase “Parts No Longer Available” becomes more common. Of course, if we take the pricing analogy to its logical conclusion, then the only way of

shopping in the future will be either by phone or sitting in front of a computer- where’s the fun in that ! Do we really want a situation where you can’t drive a car, look at a Plasma 46 One of the advantages that independents like Unilet have, is showing you that everything you buy has a value to you other than its monetary value. When you buy food, its real value is to keep you alive and well and sometimes provide you with real pleasure. When you buy a new washing machine, its real value is to provide clean clothing and free up time for you to do other things. When you buy Hi-Fi or Home Cinema products, their real value to you is to stimulate both your eyes and your ears, again in the pursuit of pleasure. These “real” values tend to be taken for granted until they are denied to you. I’ve lost count how many times 17217 Brandmakers Unilet The Volume 35-76.indd 46 30/04/2013 15:15 TV, listen to a Hi-Fi, squeeze a piece of fruit, try on a piece of clothing etc., before making that decision to buy? Even with distress items such as cookers and the like, the ability to look at, feel and touch a product is invaluable in helping you decide its real value to you and this can normally be done only instore at places such as...... you guessed it, Unilet!

If all of the above sounds like gently veiled dig at the buying public in general, then I make no apologies for it. In my 38 or so years in and out of retailing, the whole buying process has changed in many ways, but there are certain things that remain constant. To use a phrase coined by, I believe, Levi Jeans, “Quality never goes out of style” and I believe this still to be the case, whether talking about products or services. Unilet provides both in abundance. This is why we survive. We don’t look only at the short term on behalf of our customers, but continue to take the longer view when discussing/ showing/ demonstrating a product’s value to them other than its price. As the man from Curry’s Digital stated, “the right product at the right price” Our future is still in your hands, so what do you value most? You decide! I’ll go and lie down now. Keith VVoice

Fire safety Dear readers

Lcaused ast year there were over 8,000 fires in London by rubbish. They start easily, and a

large number of fires are started deliberately. Dumped furniture, car tyres, scraps of wood, old mattresses, cardboard boxes, - they don’t just look bad but are a potential fire hazard and a target for arsonists too. Making New Malden safer We have reduced the number of rubbish fires over the years and are determined to keep it that way. We work hard to spot fire hazards on the street and get them removed. We work with schools to educate young people about the dangers of fire. We work with councils and private land owners to help them keep property and open land safe. The London Fire Brigade are launching our ‘Fires are rubbish’ campaign later this year. Working in partnership with Keep Britain Tidy, we are encouraging people to be responsible with their rubbish and to take action if they see some lying

around. We will be making it easier for people to report any rubbish they see by sharing information about the services councils already provide. Later this year we will be promoting a new pan London reporting system, that can also be used to report rubbish. What you can do Most of these fires can be avoided by clearing up rubbish, making all of us safer, not to mention making the places where we live look nicer too. If you have furniture or large amounts of rubbish, don’t dump it on the street. Think about what a dangerous fire risk you are leaving for someone to get hurt or the damage it might cause. Kingston & Merton Borough Councils offer help and advice about how to clear-up rubbish on their websites so there is no need to just dump it. So if you spot rubbish that could be a potential fire risk contact your local council, and we’ll be promoting a new pan London reporting system later this year. Top tips to reduce your risk of rubbish fires • Only put rubbish out into the street when it’s due to be collected. • Keep rubbish and refuse containers away from doors and windows. • Keep exits and escape routes clear of rubbish. • Report fly-tipping to your local council. • Contact your local council if you have any large items to be removed – they will often take them away free of charge. If you see someone deliberately starting a fire call the Police or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. Nic Myatt, Station Commander , New Malden Fire Station VVoice

Taking trips to the local tip, finding a messy house annoying, actually ironing and filing away the post for safe-keeping are other clues that someone is ‘grown-up’. Other factors to appear in the top 50 list include enjoying walking round garden centres, buying a Sunday paper, holding dinner parties, listening to Radio 2 and being sensible enough to remove make up before bedtime. Despite being able to tick off most of the list, I still don’t listen to Radio 2. So, maybe I’m not a grown up after all?
