Welcome to Your Village Voice Much as I love the summer and the heat that we’ve enjoyed in recent months, I also look forward to autumnal sunshine and the fabulous colours that come with it and just love this month’s front cover. It’s rain and drizzle I don’t want, particularly when it’s unexpected. Now I am completely redundant from the school run with daughter no2 off to secondary I decided I needed something to fill that gap. So the big question - give in to the relentless puppy pestering. Or. Something else. Hmmmm…. Well I am now getting on my bike (literally!) after they leave for school in the morning and peddling to the gym where I am attempting to push myself and get fitter and hopefully shift some lbs. Almost three weeks in and I am really enjoying the new routine. Maybe not so much though in the pouring rain though, So here’s to a good proportion of beautiful sunny autumnal and winter mornings please. Fingers crossed. Remember that the Village Voice is YOUR magazine so if you are helping to organise an event and would like some FREE publicity then please do email details. Likewise if you are part of an organisation that could benefit from attracting new local members next year then why not send in an article. Did you know that in order to deliver the magazine to most of the KT3 postcode, we split the distribution over a two month period. So if you have had this edition delivered you probably won’t get the January one. There are a limited number of copies available from Waitrose, New Malden library, Tudor Willams and the Malden Centre but don’t forget that it is also published online - you can get the link from our website. So, until next month, best wishes

New Malden History Sporting Heritage (3) by Robin Gill
Over the last couple of months, we have covered various sports and the teams’ association with Malden, but it should be remembered that some sporting venues have been operated by other bodies. We have previously (Sept 2008) covered in detail the London University sportsground at Motspur Park, especially when it was the setting for world records. It’s cinder track was world famous for speed, and it is a shame that it has gone forever (grassed over in 1995). Monte Carlo or bust Other grounds included in Windsor Avenue/Cotsford Avenue the London School Of Economics (LSE) playing fields covering over 23 acres. This did not get off to an auspicious start, as the ground bought in 1921 was originally a field needed levelling and altering so the LSE gave the new secretary of the sports ground Major Cecil de Sivrac Dunn appointed in May 1925 over £200 for this purpose. Within a few months he wrote to Professor Gutteridge at the school telling him that he (Dunn) had taken the £200, then immediately (November) left for Monte Carlo. Extradition proceeding were immediately started, Dunn was immediately arrested and spent three months in French jails before being returned to England in April 1926. Dunn blamed his misdemeanour on having to bet to beat the high cost of living. He was sentenced to six months in the second division of prison (there were three) meaning he was allowed a few privileges not available to ordinary felons (more visits and letters, different clothing). He had previously held an exemplary record both in the armed forces and as a member of police forces around the world. Another issue for the students was that the ground was initially hard to get to especially carrying bulky sports equipment, the nearest rail station at Malden was some distance, and there was no bus service. This was overcome as one of the Governors (Frank Pick) of the school was also vice chairman of the London Transport Passenger Board, and soon a bus in the school colours of purple and yellow, was available at the station to ferry the students to the ground. Despite these initial problems, the ground flourished, and is still occupied by the LSE today boasting seven football and two rugby pitches, and various other sporting facilities.

Theatre of dreams Returning to Manor Park and its association with Malden Town FC “our local team”. The team began life as the football wing of Alpha Cricket Club based at St James Church in New Malden. Alpha FC who played their games in Beverley Park were part of the Wimbledon and District League in 1932/33. By 1935/36 they were playing in the Kingston and District League, and were renamed Malden FC in 1936 and started playing matches at the then Columbia Recreation Ground (Manor Park). The same season Malden FC reached the final of the Tech Cup played at Richmond Road (the former ground of Kingstonians). They lost to Hampton 8-3!

After the war (circa 1947) Malden Wednesday changed their name to Malden Town. The name Wednesday may have been used as Wednesday was the day of half-day closing locally and football was played by many of the men of the local shops during their time off. In fact, there was an official Kingston and District Wednesday League which started in 1909 and soon contained three separate divisions. There were also plans to turn Manor Park into a football stadium becoming the home of Corinthian Casuals FC, one of the major amateur cubs in the country opening up the possibility of amateur internationals being played on the ground. There was a chance of part of the park being used for housing for refugees left homeless as a result of the war, and to lose another part to a new stadium would be a loss of facilities for the residents. The stadium would have held around 7000 supporters (5000 standing 2000 seating), plus four other football pitches, two cricket pitches, ten tennis courts, bowling green, playground and pavilion. A car park and café would also be built. Ornamental beds, trees, walks, and shrubs would also be planted, and the council hoped it would become an area that Malden could be proud of.
RELIABLE
Needless to say, the idea never materialised, money was tight after the war, it would have cost around £120,000, the locals were against it, and in those days their views mattered. Town initially played in Division One of the Wimbledon and District League, but in 1949/50 moved to the Surrey Intermediate League, and the following season up to the Surrey Senior League where they were champions in 1958/59 and 1970/71. In 1978/79 they were founder members of the Home Counties League which was renamed the Combined Counties League the following year. They won this league in 1980/81 together with the Premier Challenge Cup. Truly, Malden Town’s golden year. Sadly, the club folded suddenly in 1992 after a dispute with the council.

The writing was on the wall when they were refused permission to develop their clubhouse in 1989. Their greatest success nationally was on 19th October 1968 when they played in the 3rd Qualifying Round of the FA Cup only two steps away from the 1st Round Proper, when they could have played teams from the Football League 3rd and 4th Divisions. They lost 4-0 to Walton and Hersham.
lady’s brown golfing boot and two golf balls. Alarms were raised, but it was found later that these were the remaining parts of a break in at the pavilion at Coombe Wood by three men who were caught and sentenced to three months’ hard labour. Another break in took place a few years later when 51 golf balls and a length of copper was taken. Again the culprit was caught and given three months hard labour.
I used to visit Manor Park sometimes on a Saturday to watch “Town” play. I was particularly supportive as they used to play in the red and white kit used by England in the 1966 World Cup Final, but it would be fair to say that this was where the similarity ended.
In the 1930s after the death of the last Duke Of Cambridge, Malden and Coombe Council bought the three golf clubs Coombe Hill, Wood and Malden for just over £112,000 for around 400 acres, and leased them back to the clubs. Coombe Wood now has a 125-year lease from 1994, which has given them security to develop their facilities.
Tee Time Malden and Coombe are blessed with more than its fair share of golf clubs. We have already spoken about Coombe Hill, but Coombe Wood was opened at 2.30pm on Saturday 27th May 1905 by Lord Charles Beresford. Then the Prime Minster of the time Arthur James Balfour took part in a foursome to celebrate the occasion, and drove the first ball, into a tree, the match ended in a draw. Two years later a punt was found drifting in the Thames at Kingston. The contents of the boat were a

Malden Golf Club moved here from Raynes Park in 1926, where their course in part, was purchased by a large electrical supply company for use as a sports and social club. The site at Coombe stood totally north of Coombe Brook recognised as the boundary, and where Coombe Road becomes Traps (sic) Lane. There is also a tunnel just short of the 7th (originally 4th) green on the course where the Beverley Brook passes through. A lease for 22 years from 1924 was signed by Malden Golf Course Ltd. When the clubhouse was built, the cost of the land was £1000 plus £5000 for building.

Being extensively farmland, the course had to be resewn with grass, greatly helped by having the head office of Carters Tested Seeds nearby, but even by the time play commenced on 1st May 1926 there was not much greenery after a particularly dry 1925, and few trees. The Times commentated that the ground was regarded “as being on the flat side with small greens”. The course was later purchased in 1934 by Malden and Coombe Council and leased back to the club. Golfers on the course in July 1937 were taken by surprise when they looked up to see a parachutist heading towards them. This was Jeffrey Quill a 24-year-old test pilot for Vickers who had been flying
a new one-man bomber. The plane had gone out of control at 10,000 feet and launched into a spin. The plane had dropped 7,000 feet when Quill unable to control it bailed out. The players on the course saw him frantically pulling on the lines of his chute trying to direct it towards the clearings which the open land provided. He was unsuccessful and landed in a tree in the grounds of Captain Leonard Peaty of Coombe Hill. The plane continued on its downward course and crashed into the front garden of Mr Colebourne’s house in Woodlands Avenue where it ripped off one side of the roof and ended up splayed across the garden and road. Fortunately, the petrol tank did not explode, but Mrs Colebourne ran out of the house thinking the boiler had burst. Happily, nobody was injured, although the road was blocked for a few days until the wreckage was taken away. View from the City by Justin Urquhart Stewart 7IM So despite the soap opera, what should we be doing? Phew, what a summer! From failed military coups, suspicious or otherwise, to political leaders changing – or not in Labour’s case – and the economic uncertainty that results from Brexit. The net result of this has been the hyperbole from some of our more enthusiastic journalists, leading to some exaggerated headlines which undermines confidence. It is at moments like this that we should in fact sit back and enjoy the theatre of all these changes. I would recommend a decent Sipsmith gin poured over ice and lime with some Fever-Tree tonic water in a long glass. Now we can consider the economic and investment world in a far more objective way. First of all let’s look at the big picture. The global economy figures are very similar from all the leading economic data providers. The IMF have pulled back the growth forecast for 2016 to 3.1% after the Brexit vote, with a figure for next year of 3.4%. The long term average for global growth is around 3%. So no need to panic here. Secondly, the US economic data has also been pretty robust with encouraging employment numbers in particular. Now I suspect that we will be expecting to see these slow down over the forthcoming months, but nonethe-less both confidence and property figures seem pretty positive. Our concerns really seem to be about the less than enthusiastic alternatives that we have for presidential candidates. Both of them are going through their party coronation ceremonies; one is a follically-challenged business buffoon, and the other has a somewhat unreliable track record for telling the truth. The only good news coming out of this will be that the economic policy of the US is going to be dominated far more by the experience of the Federal Reserve and its Chair, Ms. Yellen, and far less reliant on the populist politicians. Next to China. Here, too, we are still seeing good growth figures, although their reliability is always open to question. However at somewhere between 4% & 7%, these are still perfectly positive. The years of double digit growth were too far and too fast. In fact, slower growth on what is now a much a larger value means that in real terms the economy is growing on a larger basis than before. The fears around China are not about the economy, but rather its political actions and influences in the South China Sea. Its superior force may allow it, in effect, to bully the smaller local nations. Now we know I like the number seven, but not when it comes to years of declining job and wage data as is

close to the case for South Africa. Already six years into its downward spiral, there doesn’t seem to be too much confidence in the ANC-led Government turning the situation around. And it’s a shame when other emerging markets are used as the yardstick against which investors are judging the rainbow nation. Brazil has been off the charts in terms of its stockmarket rally. Meanwhile Russia’s posturing Putin has caused them quite a few economic woes to rival the rest. But among the emerging market economies, we really only believe it’s the Asian Tigers who will stand the test of time in returning solid investment gains. Then we should turn to the Eurozone, where again figures have not been bad, although the impact of the effect of Brexit has yet to be fully factored in. Lower and slower yes, but still growth. The concern for this area will be the major elections in France and Germany where we are very likely to see changes at the helm. Hollande is struggling to regain credibility and Merkel is trying to ensure a smooth succession to an as yet unknown Prince Regent. Of course there are many other areas to consider especially in the developing world, but even here there have been few new negatives coming to light. Despite recent rises, the commodity prices of metals and oil are still weak, and much of this has already been factored in. Now there is one country which really does gives us cause for question and concern - and that is us. Now here I have to be careful as I may go against my own tenet of not talking down economies. This is easily done and can be very damaging as it impacts both consumer and investor confidence. As yet we have no idea what Brexit really means, but the vote has already had an impact and is shaking confidence. Significant UK property developments have been delayed and some overseas investors have redirected investments elsewhere. The answer is that it will and has already had an impact, but this certainly does not have to be fatal. It rather depends upon what Brexit really involves and what actions the government takes to encourage investments, both internally and externally. For us, as investors, we have to consider some key risks which are heading our way. One, of course, is inflation which, with a weaker Sterling, will inevitably have an impact. Thus interest in linkers and real assets which can provide some inflation hedge will be key parts of portfolios. Additionally, global investment in areas away from the UK will provide a hedge against the lack of clarity around our current economic future. This has already proved beneficial and I suspect will continue. What we cannot do is just sit and stare like those ubiquitous illuminated rabbits watching this political farce play out in front of us. So prepare some of those defences I have described, and also look to build up a cash pot so that you will be able to take advantage of those bouts of volatility which I think are going to be inevitable over the next few months. Although I always say that “you cannot time the market: it is time in the market”, every so often there will be a crash sale when good quality assets are marked down to stupid prices.

Finance What benefits and concessions are you entitled to in later life? As you grow older, you become entitled to certain agerelated public benefits and concessions that can help with day-to-day living. The most obvious is the state retirement pension, but what are the other less wellknown top-ups and concessions that might be available? Although pension credit is a well-established benefit, not everyone realises they are eligible to claim it, so it’s worth checking whether you’re missing out on this valuable supplement to your state pension. Additionally, there may be local authority concessions available in the area where you live - for adult education or fitness classes, for example. Here are some of the benefits that you might be missing out on, plus a brief guide as to the current eligibility criteria. Pension credit There are two elements to pension credit – Guarantee Credit which guarantees a minimum income of £155.60 if you’re single, and £237.55 for couples. The second element, Savings Credit, is for people who have saved a small amount towards their retirement. Single people and couples could receive up to £13.07 and £14.75 of Savings Credit per week respectively. You may be entitled to one or both elements if you’ve reached state pension age, and are on a low income. Attendance Allowance Attendance Allowance is a benefit available to people aged 65 or older, who have care needs at home. You don’t have to receive professional care to be eligible for this benefit, and it’s often the case that a care-provider is a spouse or family member. There are two different rates available, depending on the level of care needed: • Lower rate: £55.10 per week. • Higher rate: £82.30 per week. People who claim the lower rate often need help with washing and dressing, and the higher rate reflects greater care needs during the day and night. Carer’s Allowance If you care for someone for 35 hours a week or more, and they are in receipt of certain benefits, you could get Carer’s Allowance at a weekly rate of £62.10. If you’re eligible, you will also automatically receive National Insurance credits.
22
It’s worth noting that Carer’s Allowance can affect other benefits that you and the person you are caring for receive, so you should factor in the possibility that these may reduce or be taken away. Winter fuel allowance You can receive between £100 and £300 from the government to help with your winter heating bills. To qualify for the winter payment this year, you need to have been born before 5th May 1953. Once you’ve claimed, you should receive the payment automatically between November and December in future years. Cold weather payment If you’re in receipt of pension credit, you could also be eligible for a cold weather payment if the average temperature where you live falls, or is expected to fall, to 0°C. This must be for seven consecutive days between 1st November and 31st March, and the payment is £25 for each such period. Annual flu vaccinations The annual flu vaccination is free for anyone over the age of 65 years old. It is available in pharmacies as well as from your GP, and is usually provided between September and February each year. TV licence You can apply for a free TV licence if you are aged 75 and over. The government also offers concessions to older people in residential care, and the cost for a licence in these circumstances is £7.50. Public transport Free bus pass There are various concessions available for older people using public transport. Both men and women are entitled to a bus pass at the female state pension age, giving free off-peak travel on local buses. London 60+ Oyster card People over the age of 60 living in London, can apply for the 60+ London Oyster photo card, and enjoy free travel on London buses, tubes, and a range of other types of local transport. Senior railcard and coachcard The senior railcard allows people aged 60 and over to save money on rail fares in the UK. There is a one-off cost to buy the card, and it is available online. The senior coachcard currently costs £10 plus £2 p&p, and will save you a third off standard fares in the UK if you are over 60. Prescriptions Those aged over 60 are also entitled to free prescriptions and NHS sight tests. You will need to complete the back of your prescription and let the pharmacist know that you’re eligible – you may also need to provide proof of age in this respect.

fold the orange rind and juice into one bowl and the blended cocoa powder into the other.
3. Spoon each mixture into separate greased and base-
lined 18cm square shallow cake tins and level the surface. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes until the cakes are risen and just firm to the touch. Cool for 5 minutes then turn out onto a wire rack to cool completely.
4. Trim the edges from each cake then cut each cake
into four even-sized strips. Using a little of the jam, sandwich 2 of the chocolate strips with 2 of the orange flavoured strips to create a chequered effect oblong cake.
5. Roll out half the marzipan on a surface dusted lightly
with icing sugar to an 18 x 30cm rectangle. Brush the top of the assembled cake with a little more jam and press onto the marzipan. Brush the remaining sides of the cake with jam and carefully wrap the marzipan all around the cake. Use your fingertips to crimp along the top edges of the cake. Repeat with the remaining cake strips and marzipan to make a second cake.

Music Brand New: The Malden Youth Orchestra The Malden Chamber Orchestra is an active musical reality in South-West London, who plays an important role in recruiting adult players with grade 3-6 at an orchestral instrument, and training them to play as an ensemble into a vibrant orchestral environment. The Malden Chamber Orchestra (formerly Malden Centre Orchestra) has been rehearsing and performing for over four decades, attracting literally hundreds of participants from the New Maden area and the surrounding communities: it caters primarily for mature people willing to share their passion for classical music. The orchestra meet Thursday mornings at the Malden Centre (Blagdon road, New Malden), during term time, rehearsing and performing a wide repertoire which span from major classical symphonies, to overtures and ballet music, and to celebrated music-hall and show tunes. The arrival of its new musical director in 2016 has marked a new era, which has seen the orchestra increasing the number of players, reaching out to the local community, creating its own website, fostering a new approach to technique and repertoire and enlarging the music library: the successful Christmas concert has gathered almost 300 people for the event, and has collected hundreds of pounds to donate to the local office of the Salvation Army. Now the orchestra is taking a step forward with its new project which branches out to youngsters: from September 2016 the all brand new Malden Centre Youth Orchestra will start, opening the doors to young players aged 10-21, with different grades of ability at an orchestral instrument - strings, winds and brass- (percussion players, please enquire with the conductor before enrolling). Its mission is to establish a music legacy through a local orchestra of outstanding level composed of dedicated young musicians: t will teach youngs to play within a group and to develop their musicianship and creativity in order to achieve high musical standards. The Youth Orchestra project wants to provide its participants with a regular opportunity to meet and play together, to learn the classical symphonic repertoire, to increase awareness of the musical aspects, to enrich, inspire and serve the local community, also to develop new friendships and engage with contemporary culture.
The Malden Youth Orchestra will rehearse on Thursday afternoons after school, 5-7 pm at the Malden Centre, during school terms. The formula which has proved successful is to make the music playing lively and enjoyable, in a safe and friendly environment: this is an exciting opportunity to develop technical skills on the instrument and to learn new musical competences by playing in an ensemble. To enquire about terms and fees and to enrol on the course, please contact the The Malden Centre reception desk, 020 8336 7770.

Fri 9 & Sat 10 Sep All or Nothing: The Mod Musical Featuring the music of The Small Faces. Written by Carol Harrison. In 1964, a new phenomenon exploded onto dingy British streets. It was the essence of all that was cool: it was Mod.The Small Faces encapsulated all that is Mod and they also shared another passion: their dedication to Rhythm n Blues. Celebrating the unique sound of this iconic band, this new musical includes brilliant hits including Whatcha Gonna Do About It, All Or Nothing and Lazy Sunday. This exciting tale is the stuff of Rock’n’Roll legend: the story of four charismatic young kids whose humour, passion and, above all, talent, rockets them into the big time - only to discover the path to success is heaving with corruption and betrayal. 16 Sep – 8 Oct Good Canary By Zach Helm Director: John Malkovich Presented by Rose Theatre Kingston and Mihara Donegan Productions Ltd.After sell-out performances in Mexico City and Paris (where it won two Molière Awards for Best Director and Design), Rose Theatre Kingston presents the UK première of Zach Helm’s gripping play Good Canary directed by Oscar nominee John Malkovich. greatest soul-gospel voice from outside the United States. Tickets: £10-£22.50* Tue 11 – Sat 15 Oct When We Are Married The Helliwells, the Parkers and the Soppitts are highly respected pillars of their community … but not for much longer. Married on the same day in the same chapel, they gather to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary. The celebrations are short lived when they discover the vicar wasn’t licensed and they are actually not married. In fact, they have been living in sin for 25 years. Watch with mounting glee as the pandemonium switches from horrified social embarrassment to the realisation that they are free from the shackles of long tedious marriages. Home truths are dealt, bullies get their retribution and the hen-pecked are hilariously and most satisfyingly liberated. New Malden Matters New Malden Residents’ Association On 6th September NMRA was delighted to host a meeting at the Methodist church which welcomed several local councillors and one of our MPs, James Berry. The keynote speaker was Professor Frank Kelly of King’s College London, a world expert on environmental health and head of the unit at KCL which informed our Council’s Air Quality Action Plan (AQAP), agreed last June. In his presentation, Professor Kelly reminded us that it is the 60th anniversary of the Clean Air Act, which against considerable opposition regulated the domestic burning of fossil fuel and closed those two famous landmarks, Battersea and Bankside power stations. Because of this the level of SO2 in the air reduced greatly, but we have now exchanged these fossil fuels for another- diesel. The switch from petrol to diesel was promoted by Margaret Thatcher as she wished the UK to be in the vanguard on reducing CO2 emissions, but we now know it produces damaging levels of NO2 and particles. The air is visibly polluted in London (and Paris) about ten days per year, usually in November and April when there is not much wind, but may be polluted on days when we have clear blue sky, and this pollution results in almost 10,000 premature deaths a year in London alone, and a great amount of illness. Disturbingly, we are now exposing children to levels of pollution from diesel which we did not suffer; in heavily polluted areas this reduces their lung volume by 10%, and after the age of 18 this cannot be recovered. The UK must replace any EU air quality regulations removed by Brexit, if greater harm to our children is to be prevented. We also showed an edited presentation on the AQAP from the most recent Neighbourhood conversation. It will come as no surprise that the A3, Malden Road, Burlington Road, Kingston Road and to a lesser extent the High Street all have raised annual mean levels of NO2, and to a lesser extent, particles. Traffic in all these roads is sluggish, and I would like to see discussion by our councillors of what can be done to remedy the effects on New Malden of our proximity to the A3. NO2 has been monitored at several local sites and the annual means showed some improvement in 2015/16, although the previous year there were breaches of the permissible level in three of the roads mentioned above. Continuous monitoring of both NO2 and particles is expensive and the equipment is bulky, so it is reserved for problem sites such as
40
Tolworth and Cromwell Road. Examples of activities in the AQAP to reduce air pollution include work with schools on travel plans, lobbying for low emission buses, and deterring engine idling. Much of the meeting was spent discussing actions we can take as individuals, including avoiding travel at peak times. The mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, has banned cars with odd/even number plates on heavily polluted days, and is considering banning diesel; in the UK, a scrappage scheme to replace diesel cars could cost £500m. KCL has been monitoring the effect of car-free shopping days in Oxford Street and Regent Street. The residents of Putney High Street, notorious for reaching its permitted annual number of NO2 breaches by early January, have successfully lobbied the GLA for cleaner buses. There are 8000 buses in London so replacement will be expensive, but this will need to be done if we are to meet air quality standards. Our current failure to do so is the subject of the court case brought by Client Earth, due to be heard on 18th October. There is little data as yet on the extent to which car drivers have switched to cycling. It was also recognised that some cycle lanes are used only episodically, and the loss of road space for cars may lead to greater congestion, as it does on the Embankment. Masks for cyclists may filter out NO2 but can’t filter particles, so it is better to understand exposure better in order to avoid pollution (e.g. by using the KCL app, London Air). Research using new, small scale monitors in cars has confirmed that occupants are subjected to pollution if the windows or vents are open. Greenwich has a policy of restricting parking in new developments, but provides good public transport and is also noted for its high quality public space. The school run is very polluting, and some schools have instituted a 50m parking ban. Camden and Islington have been very active in tackling engine idling. In conclusion, there were many examples of good practice from which we can learn. As Cllr Cathy Roberts pointed out, the current AQAP is in its early stages, and at NMRA we look forward to playing our part in developing it. Gardening Tools of the trade Pippa Greenwood
Autumn is well and truly here. There is plenty to do in the garden and if you want to make jobs as easy and speedy as possible, it is essential that you have the right equipment. Whether you are just out to buy a few new tools or are setting up a selection of equipment for the first time, it really does pay to choose the right things in the first place. What you choose is going to depend to an extent on how often you are likely to do any one job and on the size and type of garden you have. It really is worth buying as good a quality garden tool as possible. Poorly made and badly designed tools can work out a lot more expensive (and frustrating!) in the long run, so start with a few good ones and build up gradually. Try handling any gardening tools before you buy them, so that you can ensure that they are the right size and weight for you and that the handles are comfortable to hold. If the tools do carry a guarantee then make sure that you keep the receipt and any relevant label from the tool itself or else it may well be difficult to prove precisely when you bought it. A good quality fork and spade are essential and they need to be sturdily built if they are to do jobs such as digging, turning over soil and so forth. The neck and head of the spade should be moulded from one piece of metal for added strength. The shaft is usually constructed from wood or metal and make sure that it is firmly attached at both the head end and the handle. Some traditional-style garden tools may have wooden handles but most now have D-shaped plastic handles. Choose forks and blades whose metal parts have been treated to prevent rust. A hand fork and trowel are essential for smaller jobs such as weeding or gardening in confined spaces, and they are also great for moving and dividing smaller plants, for planting bulbs and for mixing up small amounts of compost. These are a tool where it is definitely worth feeling the handle to ensure that that the grip is comfortable. Most garden centres offer stainless steel or coated steel garden tools. Stainless steel does not rust and many people find they move through the soil better, but the price is usually considerably higher. Coated steel tools

are much cheaper and provided you keep them clean and oil them at the end of each season and periodically throughout the year, they last well. A hoe is useful for weeding between small and established plants and for aerating the surface of the soil. Keep your hoe sharpened at regular intervals and it will last for ages and slide rapidly and easily through the soil. Most hoes have a 1.5 metre (5 foot) or longer shaft which is comfortable for most gardeners to use. However, if you are very tall, then longer ones may be available from some manufacturers. My favourite is the SpeedHoe, UK designed and with an unusual almost heart-shaped head with a blade running around all edges and a pronged rear, making it the easiest and most effective hoe I’ve ever used. A spring-tined rake is really useful because it has thin flexible wire tines which make it perfect for raking up lightweight debris and fallen leaves or, of course, lawnmower clippings. A garden rake can also be used to rake up leaves although the job is slightly harder, but its main use is to break up lumps of soil and help you to create a fine level area for sowing seed, whilst at the same time removing stones, lumps and other debris. You can then use the head of the rake to help level off the soil. If you plan to grow vegetables, then a small hoe known as an onion hoe is an invaluable tool and allows you to weed quickly and easily, even between fairly closely spaced crops. You can also use it to weed in amongst ornamental plants of course. For really tight spaces and weeding between paving, and in gravel in asparagus beds etc, I’m addicted to my SpeedWeeder, a small redhandled tool l which is the best I have used for hoiking out dandelion roots in one piece too! Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood.com and book Pippa for a gardening talk or peruse the really useful selection of Pippa’s favourite gardening items including Nemaslug to control slugs, pop-up crop covers, SpeedHoes, SpeedWeeders, pull-out EasyTunnels, biocontrols for vine weevils, leatherjackets and chafergrubs, signed books and lots more.

Health OCD Awareness Week 9th-15th October By Alison Runham www.alison.runham.co.uk Nowadays, it’s common to hear people jokingly describe themselves or others as “a bit OCD,” but this trivialises a serious and potentially debilitating condition that typically goes undiagnosed for 10-15 years. OCD Awareness Week aims to correct the misconception that Obsessive Compulsive Disorder merely concerns harmless habits or quirks. What Is OCD? OCD sufferers can experience a range of compulsions, obsessional thoughts and repetitive behaviours. These cannot be easily ignored and may seriously affect their day-to-day life; in fact, the World Health Organisation ranks OCD in the top ten most disabling illnesses to reduce earnings and quality of life. OCD affects people of all ages, genders and backgrounds, typically developing in males in late adolescence and in women in their twenties. 12 in every 1,000 people are sufferers and 50% of these cases are severe, meaning their symptoms occupy more than three hours a day. In cases classified as moderate, symptoms occupy one to three hours a day, and in mild cases, less than an hour a day. OCD typically follows a four-step cycle: 1. Obsession: unwelcome, intrusive thoughts, images or impulses occur repeatedly. 2. Anxiety: caused by the distressing nature of the obsession. A sufferer may develop paranoia or a feeling of over-responsibility, believing that they or their loved ones are in danger from something which, in reality, is harmless - or that their actions can prevent or cause an unrelated, harmful incident. 3. Compulsion: behaviours or thoughts that sufferers are compelled to repeat as a result of the anxiety – often not realistically connected with their obsession or fear. 4. Temporary relief: felt briefly when they have ‘completed’ the ‘necessary’ actions. Sufferers often come to recognise their condition, but find it hard to shake the belief that continuing their behaviours will relieve their anxiety or prevent harm. Types of OCD OCD cases usually fall into four broad categories: • Checking: e.g. checking and rechecking that doors are locked or checking memories to make sure intrusive
50
thoughts aren’t real. • Contamination / Mental Contamination: a fear of germs or a fear of verbal abuse, which makes sufferers feel dirty or unworthy. • Hoarding unnecessary items or excessive quantities of useful items. • Ruminations (prolonged, time-consuming thinking on a harmless topic) or Intrusive Thoughts (disturbing and repetitive in nature, e.g. a fear of acting violently). What Causes OCD? Genetics: OCD seems to run in some families, so there may be a genetic link - although no specific genes have been identified as yet and some experts think ‘learned behaviour’ may be responsible instead. Brain differences: In some sufferers, imaging has shown increased activity and blood flow in parts of the brain that handle emotional response, and a lack of serotonin (a neurotransmitter that influences memory, mood and sleep). Trauma and Emotional Upset: Suffering neglect, abuse, bullying, isolation or a traumatic life event such as a break-up or bereavement seems to increase vulnerability to developing OCD. Personality: Certain personality traits, such as perfectionism and a highly methodical approach, seem to make the development of OCD more likely. While many people may exhibit OCD-type symptoms at times of high stress, the disorder is only clinically diagnosed in people whose symptoms: • Consume over an hour a day. • Cause significant distress. • Interfere with their ability to function in their day-today lives. Treating OCD OCD symptoms may wax and wane, worsening in times of stress, but usually the disorder becomes more severe over time if left untreated. Fortunately, most people can gain control over their OCD symptoms with professional help, although it may be several months before there’s a noticeable improvement.

CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) encourages people to talk through their fears and behaviours and find new, healthier ways of thinking. Through behavioural exercises including ERP - exposure and response prevention - sufferers are encouraged to face their fears, beginning with those easiest to tackle. They’re supported to let obsessive thoughts run their course without acting to correct or neutralise them with compulsive behaviours. This can be challenging, but over time it can help patients manage and reduce their symptoms or even achieve a complete recovery. For some people, CBT alone may be enough; others will need medication alongside or before CBT to relieve their anxiety, so that they can fully benefit from the therapy.
SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) are medicines that increase your serotonin levels. Frequently used to treat depression, at higher doses they’re often very effective in treating OCD, but usually need to be taken for 12 weeks before any benefit is seen. Patients with moderate or severe OCD may need to remain on medication long-term to stop symptoms recurring. If two courses of SSRI treatment, two courses of CBT and additional medications have proved unsuccessful, patients may be referred to the National Service for y12:Westbury House Ad 16/6/12 13:35 Page 1 to treat) OCD. Kids Why Creative Writing needs to be fun for children Terry Pratchett: “Writing is the most fun anyone can have by themselves.” As a tutor I’m very familiar with lists of what to include in creative writing: interesting sentence starters; adverbials of time, place and manner; metaphors, similes and personification, and it goes on. I see students’ eyes glaze over. And before I became a tutor, I’d done lots of boxticking myself. I’d written my way through 3 literature subjects at A-level; a literature degree at Oxford; a law degree in London; two years working in law; countless pages as a proof-reader. I could express myself concisely and correctly and I always backed up my points with evidence. I really liked ticking boxes! But the actual process wasn’t ‘fun’. When students find out that the writing process is magical, they don’t need lists. To start a story, I sometimes ask students to imagine a place; what sort of character could be in that place; what they might be doing. If someone is stuck, I help them visualise: we close our eyes; we use props and games; we talk about what we can hear, touch, smell, see, taste in the place. We laugh about things we imagine like rotten egg smells and dog poo, floating people and giant trees. Once they have come up with a place and a character, then their imagination can take them into a story: they are on the journey and the story forms as they write. They get excited; ideas flow easily; they realise they are in control of the writing even though they don’t know how the story ends. This is the creative process! And then they become enthusiastic about similes, metaphors, varying sentence structure, and all the rest. Because then they’re doing it to their characters, their settings, it’s all from them, not from a list. I’m currently writing a story about a dragon who has just set off on a journey from her mountain. I’m not sure yet where she’s headed: when I find out I’ll tell you!

grey, black and white, but you know what I mean) but this time the small flock was silhouetted against the glowing cloudy sky. Some dark clouds gave a contrast to that colour – and the birds themselves fly in front of it. I like the way you can see that the birds are actually flying. Normally it is best to get your pictures really sharp and in focus, but this time, the movement of the seagulls is important and the wings moving up and down give you a sense of that movement and speed. I have cropped the picture from the original – I reckon that this shows off the birds and clouds effectively. I like the letter box shape and with the birds on the left of the picture, there is plenty of room for them to fly into … no sense of squashing them.
You may have noticed that I love seagulls - ‘gulls’ actually as a friend never stops reminding me that there is no such thing as a seagull! The early mornings in Lancing are often lovely, with the sun rising over Shoreham to the east and the clouds shining with the reflected reds and oranges of the sun. And that is when the seagulls (sorry, Dave) wake up and start flying around. I guess that they are partly enjoying themselves in the light as well as thinking about their breakfast. Much like me! Many of my pictures of seagulls show them in all their colours (well, mainly

It’s October – and the leaves are turning – I’ve shown some of this before. But I’m especially pleased with this picture. The green and red leaves give such a lovely contrast … this really is autumn. Together, with some friends, I had been trying to get autumn colour pictures and didn’t have much success. This afternoon I was out on my own and wandering through a National Trust house and gardens. And there it was … the lovely red acer and the green whatever-it-is. Chance so often plays a part in photography; I hadn’t planned on going to this house, but I was passing and had time and so I dropped in. But chance only works if you’re ready to take advantage of it. I usually carry my camera (although “even” a smartphone can take great pictures) and was looking around for things that struck me, that I could photograph and show to other people. An opportunity can be taken or it can be missed. I’m glad I took this one! Incidentally, the blurry, out of focus, background sets off the leaves perfectly: if that had been in focus, your eyes would have been drawn to that and not noticed the things I wanted to emphasise.

This last picture – also taken then, shows that sometimes beautiful images mean getting low and on the ground. If I worried too much about mud on my trousers, then a fair chunk of my pictures would never be taken! However, these flowers were on a slightly raised bed and so I only needed to crouch to get this picture from below. To me, it is like a set of champagne flutes at a summer party – and again the out of focus background (what photographers call ‘bokeh’ – and no I don’t know where it came from) makes you focus on the parts of the picture that I want you to see.

Organisations Royal British Legion Malden & Coombe Branch
As we now find ourselves coming to the end of a very busy summer, Malden and Coombe Royal British Legion branch begins preparations for the Poppy Appeal 2016. It is with great sadness that we have to tell you of the passing of June Fairclough who supported and headed the Poppy Appeal over the years with her husband John. June and John were active branch members for many years and we sorely miss them both. The Appeal this year runs from 29th October until 12th November. The team will be at the Guide Hut [opposite the Scout Hut] in Tadworth Avenue, New Malden, on Saturday 15th October between noon and 2pm Hall where collectors can choose their favourite pitch and 2 hour slot for New Malden. With the help of the volunteer collectors and generosity of the wonderful residents, visitors and businesses of New Malden, we hope to match or exceed last year’s collection which was in excess of £24,000. Thanks in advance to our team of organisers who work so hard to make the Appeal such a success in our community. Our branch members are busy making Remembrance Sunday arrangements for 13th November. We are liaising with the Council and Police for a service starting again at 9.30am attended by the Mayor of Kingston. We hope you will join us in great numbers as you have done in previous years and thank you for your continued support. The Royal British Legion offers free week-long Adventure Breaks to children of men and women who are currently serving, or have served, in the
Armed Forces. Legion Break Centres around the country provide serving and ex-Service personnel with the chance of a family holiday break. The Legion is a partner in the Ministry of Defence initiative – Defence Recovery Capability - assisting wounded, injured and sick Service personnel at centres to recover or return to duty or move successfully into civilian life. The Legion supports its beneficiaries with matters of household equipment and adaptions, care phones and a handy van service known as Poppy Calls. There are six Legion care homes across the UK exclusive to ex-Service people and their dependents; four with specialist dementia care units. Last year the Legion granted more than £2 million to 60 charities, including Age UK and the Alzheimer’s society, to deliver projects supporting the Armed Forces community. As you can see, money raised from membership subscriptions and the Poppy Appeal provides lifelong support for the Armed Forces community – serving men and women veterans of all ages and their families. We ask you to please consider joining. If you can spare a couple of hours for a Poppy Appeal shift, have a further enquiry or would like to join, please contact janfeist@hotmail.com or Lynne at rbl.maldenandcoombe@gmail.com or phone 07857422140.
