Greetings!

Yes, readers. Very special occasion time – get the cake and balloons out as it’s the 100th edition of your favourite community magazine – Malden’s Village Voice. Hoorah!!! It has been wonderful to read the many messages that I’ve received over the past couple of weeks. I can’t take credit for starting the Village Voice, but I do still have 85 editions under my belt, plus 68 of Worcester Park Life which I’m still quite chuffed with! Publishing not one but two magazines for so long, plus all the associated community ‘opportunities’ that have come my way as a result, was been nothing short of unimaginable when I took over the Village Voice from founder Many Mardell in March 07. I’d taken voluntary redundancy from Barclays (Stockbrokers) when I was pregnant with Rebecca, now aged 10, and then spent a few years at home with two small girls, wondering – and discussing with so many other mums what on earth was - ‘next’? Mandy selling her business came up and suddenly, after such a long time… I knew what I wanted to do!

Anyway, without all of our lovely advertisers, there wouldn’t be any magazines. So, when you’re contacting them please remember to tell them where you got their number.

events New Malden 5km Easter Fun Run

9am Saturday 29th March 2014 Beverley Park The annual New Malden 5km fun run will take place this year at 9am on Saturday 29th March 2014 at Beverley Park. The event is free to enter and is open to runners of all ages and abilities. Building on last year’s success of The Malden Fortnight 5km fun run, the event organisers are looking to double the number of entrants from 75 in 2013 to 150 runners in 2014. There will also be a children’s 100m ‘Easter Egg and Spoon’ race with Easter Eggs as prizes for all children who enter. The event is a great opportunity for members of the local community to do something active together in the beautiful surroundings of Beverley Park. Christ Church Primary School New Malden has set up a fundraising team called ‘A Better Build’ for the Junior School playground at the rebuilt school which is opening after Easter this year. The 5km fun run event is an opportunity to raise awareness of the new playground project, as well as hopefully raising £1,000 towards new play equipment. There will be prizes awarded for best fancy dress runners (based on an Easter theme), fastest runners in various categories, as well as prizes for those who have helped to raise money for the new playground equipment. Waitrose sponsored the event last year and there are additional sponsorship opportunities for other local businesses or individuals who would like to get involved. To enter the free event or to find out more about the A Better Build project, go to the event

new malden history Coughs and sneezes by Robin Gill

Some people may remember that back in June 2010, I wrote about two prominent doctors in Malden (Dr Child and Dr Lukis). Two professionals from two different eras, but both with the same objectives; to help the local population, and to try to prevent contagious diseases taking hold in our area. Growing problems

Malden had no resident doctor during its first 15 years before Dr Child arrived in 1865. He saw the population rise from 1200 to 3890 and in 1895, New Malden added families from Old Malden and Coombe making the total number of his patients 5621. There were just over 1000 houses in the approx 5 square miles that made up the district, and the number in each household varied from just over 4½ in New Malden to 8½ in the large houses of Coombe. Infant mortality was still high, with children under the

age of one accounting for a quarter of deaths. Because of the close proximity and easy access to London, it was impossible to prevent infections being brought into Malden. Such a case was Scarlet Fever. In March 1895 a virus was caught outside of Malden and brought back to a house in Sycamore Grove. Treatment for the illness involved isolation for the patient (normally a child). Everything in the patient’s room had to be stripped of anything on which the germs might keep a hold (curtains etc), and all bedclothes and sheets had to be boiled or burnt. Dishes of chloride of lime were placed around the room to act as a disinfectant, and in some cases the child’s body was daily rubbed with oil. Further cases of scarlet fever occurred in Market Place (High Street), and to show that money was no division, there was a further outbreak on Kingston Hill. A relative visiting from London brought an unwelcome gift to a family in Northcote Road after five of the children showed symptoms of infection. Again, isolation had to be carried out which proved very difficult with five patients in a small house. Fortunately outbreaks of enteric fever (typhoid) were very rare. One was recorded in the Market Place (High Street), and another one in Elm Grove (Road). The latter sadly resulted in death. One of the drains at

PART-TIME SECURITY BARRIER OPERATOR A security guard is required on a part-time basis to operate a two-arm electric traffic barrier installed by Kingston Council on the private Coombe Estate at the junction of Warren Road and Coombe Lane West. The hours of work are 4.00 to 6.00pm, Monday to Friday. The holder of this position will be required to stand on the barrier island between the two arms for the 2 hour period to alleviate the problem of rat running traffic by turning away unauthorised vehicles. Authorised vehicles are identified by means of windscreen stickers. A gateman’s hut is provided. This position could suit a recently retired member of a security company or a retired police officer. If you are interested and would like further information, please contact Mr Mick Taviner, Secretary to the Coombe Estate Residents’ Association by email at: micktaviner@blueyonder.co.uk or telephone on: 020 8337 2766. 8

the property was blocked with grease, and the water supply had not been checked for two years, but this was not diagnosed as the cause. The unfortunate resident was known to have a liking for oysters in his diet, and didn’t normally care about their quality and origin. Typhoid was known as a water borne disease and could occur where people were unsure about their water supply, or food items produced in it. Of other diseases, measles infected many families, again mainly the younger members suffering, and of course there were the annual flu outbreaks especially in January and February which sometimes reached epidemic levels. Again isolation of patients was put into practice as part of their treatment. Tonsillitis in some form infected about a third of all the children of the village. Tolworth isolation hospital had been built in 1889 in Red Lion Road which was then semi rural , but Malden did not buy a share of this valuable facility until three years later (1898), meaning that all isolation had to be carried out at home, whilst the medical profession petitioned the council for a local cottage hospital. Malden of course, was still growing with 34 new houses built in the year. As can been seen from the above sanitation was a major problem, but the gradual eradication of cesspools (an early form of waste disposal) and the cleaning of ditches was

slowly rectifying some of the health issues. Problems were sorted out in Beaconsfield Terrace (on Kingston Road), South View Villas (in Elm Road), and South Lane amongst others.

Come to Malden for a healthier life

By the turn of the century, cleanliness was improving, but so was the population with 195 births and 67 deaths in 1903. Ninety three houses were built and occupied during the year, with a further thirty nine in the process of construction. This meant the population was estimated at 7199 an increase of 1578 (+28%) in under 10 years, while the number of houses had increased by 70%. As the population of Old Malden had increased by 23 and Coombe by 34, it was obvious where the main influx of residents were living.

Regarded by some as the “Montpellier Of Surrey” New Malden was regarded as one of the healthiest districts, “being 50 feet above sea level, and protected from the malarial influences of the Thames Valley by the high grounds of Coombe, and swept by the fresh breezes from the Downs”. Unfortunately, in 1903 there were several cases of scarlet fever, all in New Malden. Out of the thirty eight reported, the vast majority were in the 5-15 years age group. Twenty two were sent to the isolation hospital at Tolworth, and when this became full, a further thirteen were sent to a similar institution in Cuddington, sadly two of these cases ended in death. In some of the cases it seems that maybe the child was returned home too early from isolation, as the siblings quickly contracted the disease. There was also the possibility of a smallpox outbreak from a contact in Battersea, but this was caught in time, and the contact vaccinated, all their clothing that they were wearing at the time burnt, and the house completely disinfected.

Malden by 4, so again it was obvious where the real growth was, New Malden’s housing boom continued with 530 extra properties over the previous five years. There were seven inquests held concerning residents deaths. Of these, three were declared natural causes, two suicides, and of the two others, one was as a result of a fall, and the other septicaemia after being scratched by a pair of scissors. The main job of employment in the local area was with the several laundries that had been established (California Road, Kingston Road, Wellington Road, Coombe Road, and Grafton Road). There were also five bakeries (One in Kingston Road, and four in Coombe Road .Other than that, the majority of the working population travelled elsewhere to their place of work. Beverley Park (known at the time as Malden Hill Recreation Ground) was still under development but was recognised as being “20 acres of glorious

Importance of fresh milk

Malden still had a number of farms and dairies supplying milk products to the residents. This was still some years before the advent of pasteurization and the local doctors were very much in favour of “whole milk” (straight from the cow). There was a campaign to support the local Dairies (Dickerage Lane, Coombe Road, Malden Road, and Burlington Road), and against consuming milk that had travelled some distance and was full of preservatives. Cesspools were filled in, and houses connected to the main sewerage system. Drains were repaired and re-laid (mainly around Kingston Road where we have had problems over the last few years). Some houses in Kingston Road were found to have no foundations and prone to damp being built purely on the soil. These were ordered to have concrete six inches thick laid in an effort to curb this problem. Stables in Grafton Road, and Acacia Grove were drained and paved, as was the dairy in the Market Place (Bowry’s).

Too much of a good thing

A case of overcrowding in Wellington Road (Crescent) was dealt with when the family of fourteen left the district. By 1908 the population had risen to over 11,000 (an increase of nearly 54%) living in 2385 houses. The population in Coombe had risen by 181 and in Old 10 Please remember to mention the Village Voice when you speak to our advertisers

breathing space for the benefit of public health, while Malden Green had also been secured for recreational pursuits. All the cesspools had been filled in, and all the houses had been connected to the main sewers. Weekly refuse collection had started, and all households had to provide a secondary entrance for access. Residents were also being encouraged to burn in the fireplaces potato peelings, paper, rags, and cabbage leaves etc. The days of recycling and composting were a long way off. Flies were a problem, especially during hot weather, and could be carriers of various diseases so elementary hygiene (the covering of food) was encouraged. It was also suggested that the backyards of some of the poorer properties should be paved and fitted with gullies to take away any waste water. Also the main streets in the district were tarred over to limit the amount of dust thrown up. The main child ailment was measles of which there were over 450 cases in 1908 all in New Malden. This caused the schools in Burlington Road to be

disinfected four times and those in Lime Grove three times. The drains of the schools at Lime Grove and in Old Malden were also re-laid in an attempt to halt the spread of diseases like diphtheria which had unfortunately claimed the life of a child Tommy Keen aged just eleven months. It was known that if you could catch the infection within the first two days with an antitoxin, but if left it was very infectious. So, as can be seen over a hundred years ago, even in a place like Malden which prided itself on its cleanliness and its health workers, danger especially for our children, was never far away. Fortunately in these days with the advancement in medicine the world is a much safer place.

malden fortnight 2014 from 6th July

Do you remember last summer, or have your memories been washed out by the recent )and frequent) downpours? Well, I remember, and it was FANTASTIC!!! Not unaided, I hasten to add, by absolutely spectaculour weather. We had dry weather from the beginning until the end and, surprisingly, certain events suffered because it was just TOO hot - famously the annual dog show which was cancelled for concerns over animal safety. Big Band night was also down on attendance as was

the Presentation Evening. But what a relief to not be constanly worrying about ‘what happens it it rains..’ So, we’ve started planning 2014, but will need to take the weather as it comes. This year’s theme is “Carnival” and for the parade on Saturday 5th July we are seeking one or two steel bands preferably comprising of young musicians to either walk in the parade or to be transported along the High Street on a flat bed vehicle. The Malden Fortnight Committee would be grateful if any person or group that wishes to join in the festivities would contact Tony on 020 8942 0434 or email wag36@btinternet.com So, get the dates in your diary, let us know if you want to organise an event. And, if you have spare time and want to get involved in organising this wonderful community fortnight - well, don’t be shy!

Organisations The New Malden Rotary Club

Brian Garlick, the President of the New Malden Rotary Club, would like to thank the residents of New Malden for their generosity during the Santa Claus street collections and the Saturday collections outside the Co-Op and Waitrose, over the Christmas period. The total sum raised was over £6,200 which is a great result for this year. The proceeds, together with other fund raising efforts, including a golf day and a video horse race meeting, will go towards supporting many local causes and some international charities. A donation has been made to the Kingston food bank to help those suffering food poverty. Donations were also made to the St John the Baptist Church, Malden and the Fircroft Trust Care Home to provide Christmas Day lunches for the deserving. Co-Op vouchers totalling £1,000 were also distributed to the vulnerable and needy over the Christmas period. Other local causes which will benefit include the Youth Speaks Competition, the Mary Preston Holiday Scheme, in association with the Inner Wheel and help and support towards the High Street Christmas lights, together with providing Father Christmas and his sleigh for the High Street Christmas Parade. International help during 2013 has included two shelter boxes sent to the Philippines, donations in conjunction with other Rotary clubs to maximise donations to Water Aid, Sand Dams and the Southern India Eye project. The latter is to help two new surgeries to eliminate eye disease. This year the Club’s activities are about to start with mock interviews at Richard Challoner School. One morning each week, up to the end of April, four Club members conduct interviews with pupils and then give feedback to help them when attending forthcoming college, university or job interviews. National Stroke Awareness Day is usually held in early April, by a variety of organisations, at venues throughout the country. Our stall in New Malden High Street is open between 10.00am and 3.00pm

and members of the general public can have their blood pressure taken by a qualified nurse to check for abnormalities. If necessary, it is suggested they contact their local GP. Usually the Mayor visits us to support this community venture. Another activity planned for 2014 includes the very popular Dave Marrion Big Band Concert in December at the Methodist Church in the High Street. Last year £956 was raised with support from sponsors Hawes & Co and Tudor Williams and help from the ladies of the Inner Wheel providing teas and coffees in the interval. The Rotary Club continues to meet the annual running costs and maintenance of the handsome clock in the High Street opposite Tudor Williams. The clock was paid for by the Club and is a useful local amenity; you may wish to check the time whilst shopping in the area. Once again many thanks to the residents of New Malden for supporting your local Rotary Club and we are especially grateful to the Village Voice for providing an invaluable means of informing the local community of our charitable activities. by Michael Robson. organisations The New Malden WI

We are a friendly group of local women who have interests in common and who like to learn about and experience new things. We meet once a month, in the evening, when we have a guest speaker. This is followed with a chat over a cup of tea. There are lots of optional clubs and activities you can join including a book club, bridge club, lunch club, outings, weekends away, learning new skills, craft events and lots more. If you have a special interest in something then perhaps we could start another club. You may not know that the WI meets and continued to meet a real need. On a national scale the Woman’s Institute works on issues that affect us on every level. This could be education, leisure, the local community, women’s welfare, the environment or international affairs. From time to time the WI is a strong lobbying body, not bound by any political or religious affiliations, and therefore free to speak out

on any issue of concern. We would like to invite you to come along and meet like minded women in a warm and friendly environment. We meet on the second Thursday of each month at Shiraz Mirza Hall, Malden Road, New Malden, KT3 6AV.

If you have any questions please contact Barbara on 02095461495 or twocavs@googlemail.com.

The echoes of History in the Economy

by Justin Urquhart Stewart This year will inevitably be peppered with references to the anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War. Some will be relevant, some maudlin and lachrymose, with others casting dire warnings of history repeating itself. I personally don’t fall into that particular school of thought, thinking rather that history provides resonances and echoes of similarity as opposed to replays of events. I would rather take you to another series of events a century ago which again provide us with echoes today. Before he turned into an ego maniac, the genius farming engineer that was Henry Ford was not just

an astonishing engineer and designer, but both a ruthless and dynamic businessman. He was no 19th Century Victorian philanthropist, but rather a devout capitalist seeking to make even greater returns. Thus in January 1914, to the astonishment of his competitors, he made the radical decision to change policies for his employees. He introduced not just a minimum wage but a form of profit sharing as well. At a level of $5 per day this was seen as a huge change in pay and attitude. Additionally he introduced health and education schemes and was especially keen to ensure that English was being learnt as a primary language by what was for the most part a first generation immigrant workforce. So why this burst of generosity from this arch capitalist? Actually the answer was supremely logical at various levels. Ford had broken down car construction into its constituent parts and hence we saw the birth of the production line. Skilled engineers were not needed - just drones capable of completing continuous and repetitive tasks. Such efficiency was vital when you were driving for the production of 1,000

cars a day. The trouble with such roles though was that, for many, such a process could not be sustained and thus the employee turnover was extraordinarily high. Thus by attracting the right people, making sure they were all of a certain standard (in language as well as health) his turnover of staff fell, his costs of recruitment replacement and training fell, production went up and profits rose. Given that employee numbers were rising to near 45,000, this was having a significant impact. Ford was the place to work even if the job was mind numbingly dull. He also had a broader view - by people earning more, there was a greater chance that more people would be buying the must have product of the moment - the Model T Ford. Sadly for Ford this seems to have been his peak of business logic, as although he continued to be successful and became one of the world’s wealthiest men, he increasingly became the corporate megalomaniac worthy of any Dallas soap, and even voiced support for the fascist ideals of Mr A Hitler. So what are the echoes from this that we can hear today resonating in the economy? The question of the minimum wage has long been argued by the right as being an anti-competitive ruling of an interfering state. The left argues for the need to create a living wage which, in a consumer society, will mean that there is more money being spent - especially at the weaker end of society where expenditure is often 100% and saving nil. We have been living through a period where pay has not kept up with the cost of living, although the gap has certainly been narrowing. Now you could argue that many were overpaid in the good days and that an adjustment was inevitable, but more importantly society needed to be adjusted towards the need for longer term saving and not drawn towards toxic shorter term debt. The cancer of Pay Day Loan companies sadly has already spread too wide amongst the financially desperate and naive. This question though is not just about pay levels, but rather ensuring that over time the people have a greater understanding of what financially they are

going to have to face and what they can do about it. There of course is no wand or spell to solve the issue but rather longer term actions for saving. Low cost pensions and ISAs are quite easily achieved these days but with understandable cynicism about a disreputable financial services industry in key areas, the ability to convince people is going to be difficult. My view as a benevolent dictator would be to make such saving compulsory as we have seen in Australia, where this has produced a society with far greater confidence in its personal finances and thus in its future. organisations Girlguiding marks The Big Brownie Birthday

In 2014 Girlguiding is celebrating the birthday of our Brownie section. Girls across the country will be marking The Big Brownie Birthday by tackling an array of exciting challenges and events from spending a night at a museum to rock-climbing, local events will be taking place all over the UK - and beyond. The Brownie section was started in 1914 when younger girls – seeing the opportunities older girls were being offered in Guides – called for something for them too. Gill Slocombe, the Chief Guide, explains: ‘At a time when women had no vote, the first Brownies made the most of the space guiding offered to push boundaries, shatter stereotypes and discover their full potential – and they haven’t stopped since. ‘Girls’ lives have changed massively since then and Brownies has changed with it – and that’s why it is still going strong. ‘Today’s Brownies can try everything from abseiling to stargazing and archery to zip wiring, but what’s at the

core remains the same – girls raising their aspirations, developing a sense of adventure and making a positive difference in their communities.’ They follow the Brownie Adventure, which enables girls to experience fun and friendship while making a difference to their communities. The varied programme helps Brownies to develop self-confidence and learn new skills – they can earn badges including Science Investigator, World Issues and Wildlife Explorer. ‘This year is an opportunity to celebrate the amazing opportunities all girls and young women can get through guiding and the incredible impact our 100,000 inspirational volunteers have,’ Gill says. ‘But most importantly, this is the Brownies’ year – it’s a chance for them to have fun, stand in the spotlight and shout out about just how much of a difference girls can make.’”

New Malden

The Brownie section continues to thrive in New Malden and we currently have seven different units across the town, serving girls from 7 to 10. During this year, we will be undertaking many exciting activities, including residential holidays, days out, parties, a variety of badges and we will be highly visible during Malden Fortnight, taking part in the parade, performing dances and singing games and helping at the craft stall. All members of Girlguiding celebrate Thinking Day on 22nd February each year. This is a chance for us to remember that we are part of a worldwide organisation and New Malden Brownies will be joining with other sections from the rest of Kingston Division on Thinking Day this year where we will take the opportunity to renew our promise and consider our plans for the next 100 years!. If you would like more information on Brownies or becoming a volunteer, please visit the website: girlguding.org.uk and if you see the Brownies out and about, then please say ‘Hallo’ and wish us a Happy 100th Birthday!

Brownie Birthday Lights

As part of the centenary celebrations the 2nd New Malden Brownie Pack has 100 tea lights and holders to give to anyone in New Malden who was a brownie. The challenge is to put the light in your window on Thinking Day -22nd February. If you would like to take part please to collect your light and holder from New Malden Methodist Church on Saturday 22nd February between 10 am and noon for a small donation to help cover the costs. Any surplus will be donated to a local charity to be decided.

The Malden Fortnight Committee offers our congratulations on reaching your 100th edition. The support and interest we get from the community has been bolstered in recent years by our activities being highlighted within the magazine. Having Jenny as a key member of our committee has probably helped in this respect, but it also shows that not only does Jenny report events that bring the community together, but she also helps create those events and has been involved in a great number of those events throughout the years. As an organisation that seeks to celebrate New Malden, we applaud the Village Voice and long may it continue. Peter Findlater Chair – The Malden Fortnight Committee Congratulations on your 100th Edition of Village Voice, well done! We would like to take this opportunity of thanking all our valued clients. Time For You Domestics I advertise regularly in both the village voice & worcester park life for me this has been a great success! Village Voice and Worcester Park Life are great little magazines which are produced to a high standard and target a local audience that is often difficult to reach. The magazines are always an interesting read as well as a useful vehicle for our advertising. We also appreciate the friendly and personal approach taken by Jenny to make advertising in the magazines effortless. Happy 100th! Tennis Avenue Academy

Hawes & Co have always been very pleased to support Village Voice. Each month it is informative, well written and always incorporates interesting features and articles to appeal to a wide audience. We’ve been really pleased to meet so many of your readers in our stores. Our Hamseys team all send our very best wishes for your continued success. New Malden Methodist Church would like to congratulate the Village Voice on it’s Centenary Edition. This community magazine is welcomed by all our members and coffee bar users as an informative and interesting tome reflecting the many diverse activities for all the community whilst giving a unique insight into the history (ancient and modern) of the New Malden Village concept. Congratulations on reaching 100 editions ! I have advertised successfully with you since 2007 and have enjoyed a great response from the community. This format really works as people like to use local trades and the rates are really competitive. I Look forward to sending another testimonial for the 200th edition. Andy Garner - Humpit

RJ Tree Services would like to congratulate Jenny on the 100th edition; we have enjoyed our association including the editorial feature space and found the magazine an excellent advertising medium for our business Congratulations Village Voice! Well done for the 100th edition... It has been wonderful being associated with a local paper that is really relevant to its community and a great platform for businesses to market their services in. Second Nature Landscapes The Village Voice has been extremely helpful to us for the advertising of our fairly new business A1 Dry Cleaners in South Lane , which opened March of 2013, if it hadn’t been for the professional advertising and friendly staff there, I’m not sure how many people would have found us. Thank you very much Jenny and wishing the Village Voice continued success for the future.. Many congratulations to the Village Voice for reaching its 100th edition! We’re very grateful for the support we’ve had from the Village Voice in our fundraising efforts and the invaluable editorials. It really has made a huge difference to our recent minibus campaign. We wish you well for the next 100 editions! Coombe Boys’ Parents and Friends Association Many Congratulations to the Village Voice for reaching it’s 100th edition! It is very much part of the community life of the New Malden area & I have regularly advertised in it & it’s partner magazine, Worcester Park Life, since 2009. I have found this to have been very successful, gained a lot of repeat business from them & have established myself as “the local plumber” to the people in these areas. ANDY REEVE, Plumbing & Heating Informative, readable, fun and above all committed to building up community in New Malden. Many congratulations to Village Voice and its editor Jenny Stuart on the occasion of its 100th edition! The articles on local history by Robin Gill are quite excellent and even more commendable is the enthusiasm which which Village Voice gets behind good causes such as people raising money for charities that are close to their hearts. Village Voice has rapidly become a central and respected publication that does a great deal of good and New Malden would much the poorer without it. Stephen Kuhrt, Vicar Christ Church

celebrations Happy Birthday To Us!!

So, what do you normally get when you ‘hit one hundred’? A telegram from The Queen, a 100 gun salute….or a double page spread in New Malden’s finest and longest running community magazine? OK, so maybe I’m a bit biased here and the third option is probably the only one I can actually make happen. But, that said, it still does feel a real honour (and maybe making me a little misty eyed as I type) to be writing to my 10,000+ loyal readers in this, the 100th edition of the ‘Village Voice’! For those of you who’ve stuck with us from the start, you’ll remember that we first launched back in November 2005, when local mum and publishing entrepreneur, Mandy Mardell, noticed a gap in the market amid our flourishing businesses and decided that a local magazine was just what New Malden

Congratulations to the Village Voice on its 100th edition - it is a privilege to share this local, readable platform on its monthly outing. It is reassuring to know, based on comments received from my many clients, just how much my profile has been enhanced by taking advantage of this highly effective placement. Kim Robinson Advertising since 2010. We’ve been so happy advertising in this terrific little community magazine that we’ve stayed in it for over 7 years. Congratulations to the Village Voice and Jenny on its 100th edition – we are proud to be associated with you. Westbury Garage. Advertising since 2006. The Royal British Legion wish to congratulate the Village Voice on their 100th Edition. It has suppported the Legion in every way and we hope it will continue to do so. The Legion this year will be holding various functions in connection with the 100th Anniversary of the start of WW1 details of these will be advertised nearer the date and it hoped that the public will support us in what we do. needed to bring “commerce and the community” together 15 editions later, when Mandy and her family relocated to Wales, it was with some trepidation that I took over ownership – and the ‘editorship’ – of New Malden’s only monthly (free) publication. Many questions crossed my mind as I nervously took to the helm. Could I keep all my advertisers happy (could I keep all my advertisers?); how I could I ensure that I was fully and fairly representing the many diverse groups, clubs and activities in ‘The Village’?; and how could I maintain the reputation and goodwill that Mandy had built up ahead of me?, and finally, how the heck do you work Adobe Indesign! All valid concerns…but I needn’t have worried! I was welcomed with open arms by readers and advertisers alike and every month I continue to be overwhelmed by the wonderful and incredibly

Cake and Bake Bakewell Tart

Modern commercial versions of the Bakewell Tart are easily found in most supermarket cake departments, but they are generally oversweet with a stodgy texture. This home-made Bakewell Tart is well worth the effort then, being light, crumbly and full of flavour. 1 packet shortcrust pastry 200g raspberry jam 175g butter, room temperature 175g caster sugar 4 large eggs 2 dessertspoons lemon juice 1 teaspoon lemon zest 1 dessertspoon almond extract 250g ground almonds 60g flaked almonds Preheat the oven to 190°C/170°C (fan)/Gas mark 5. Grease either a round dish (28cm diameter) or an oblong tin (20 by 30cm) with soft butter. You can also put some greaseproof paper in the bottom of the dish, to help the finished tart come out if you want to serve onto a plate before cutting. Roll out the pastry until it’s fairly thin and then put into the dish or tin, trimming off the excess pastry. Cover the base of the pastry case with greaseproof paper and then blind bake for 15 minutes by covering the paper with ceramic beans or dried pulses. Remove the paper and beans from the baked pastry, then return to the oven for a further 5 minutes until the pastry is golden. When the pastry case has cooled, spread the jam evenly over the base. In a mixing bowl, beat the butter and sugar together until fluffy. Whisk the eggs in a jug then gradually add to the mixing bowl, beating as you go. Add the lemon juice, lemon zest and the almond extract, then gently fold in the ground almonds. Spoon the mixture evenly into the case and gently spread to the sides of the dish. Sprinkle the flaked almonds over the top and bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes until the filling is golden on top and feels firm in the middle. Remove and allow to cool for 15 minutes before serving.

b ook review Pubs, Inns and Taverns of Surbiton And Malden

Richard Holmes has already produced two previous volumes detailing the pubs and inns in neighbouring Kingston and Richmond. He has now completed the third in the series, and this one covers our neck of the woods.

You will be pleased to learn that the book can be purchased locally at Suttles in the High Street. With around 150 pages, this third volume compliments and continues Richard’s work. I know Richard likes to visit all the hostelries included in his books, so the research must be fun! We are certainly blessed with some interesting and varied local pubs, some of which are under threat, and this latest offering covers them all, some of which I had forgotten (Cloudbuster!) The histories and descriptions of each building are clearly detailed and well illustrated, and the breweries are also well researched, and listed together with the landlords over the years. The book is part history, and also part mystery. Can you help find the mysterious Hut? It is remarkable how many of our locals started trading as long ago as the

46

1860/70s (Prince Of Wales, Brickmakers Arms, Fountain [as The Haygrove Tavern], Royal Oak,). Some of course are considerably older (Plough, Duke of Wellington and Worcester Park). The book also comes bang up to date with The Watchman which opened in April 2012 on the site of the old police station. Other than church buildings, these inns stand as some of the oldest buildings in the local area, and before the existence of public halls, these were the centre of the village’s secular life. Indeed, the decision to build New Malden’s first church was taken in the Glasshouse (as the Railway Tavern) in the 1850s. There is a map at the beginning of each section to enable you to locate the site of each hostelry, even the elusive Woodies, all hopefully within walking distance Finally, not only can you read about the inns of Malden in this book, but also those of our neighbours Surbiton, Tolworth, Hook, and Chessington. Priced at £12.50 this is sure to be in demand. by Robin Gill

cover planting is essential and you could always use temporary annual flowers to fill in gaps between longer term planting. If you find that these too are scuffed up shortly after you have planted them, then the best thing to do is cover newly planted areas of bedding with an arch of chicken mesh or with sticks with taut string tied between them. Obviously this will look a mess but can be removed promptly once the plants have rooted well and started to establish. I have found that the electronic cat deterrent ‘Cat-Watch’ works very well too. Mulching materials can sometimes cause problems and despite what the label says, many gardeners have

told me that they found that the cocoa shell mulches seem to attract cats. Generally speaking soggy mulches like this or anything with a strong smell do tend to deter cats, as they hate digging in moist material. Take extreme care if dogs use the garden as cocoshell mulches can prove fatal to them. Mulches made of large pebbles or stones also tend to keep them at bay, but smaller diameter gravel or shingle seems to be quite attractive to some cats. Areas of freshly sown seed look very attractive to a cat or dog and again are best protected either by chicken mesh or sticks and string. Remember to keep the string taut at all times, as there’s a slight risk that birds could become entangled in it. New baby in New Malden

by Lucy Howard When I just had Daughter No. 1, I signed up to the Babycentre website, which updated me with lots of ideas for games to play with her every week. The website was very enthusiastic about encouraging her sense of touch from a very early stage by playing with balls of wool, silk scarves and so on. “Where am I going to find all this stuff?” I thought to myself. Then a brainwave. Good old Tudor Williams’ haberdashery department. An oasis of calm, order and hundreds of different types of wool, thread, and buttons. The latter were particularly exciting for a small person as they were in tubes which could be endlessly tipped and retipped rather like a “rainmaker” toy. We stayed as long as we felt we decently could without buying anything, but it was the first of many visits, and as my daughter grew older and obsessed with “craft”, she did actually start coveting some of these beautiful items. Our visits to the Haberdashery department became an exercise in decision-making and negotiation. “You can only buy two things - you have to choose your favourites. Two SMALL things. You can’t have the sewing machine.” Had Baby Sensory classes been around for Daughter No.1, I might well have been tempted to enrol her in one of these, as they look amazing. They are designed specifically to stimulate and delight babies below the age of 13 months, introducing them to a world of music, textures, gentle socialising and signing, with all sorts of different props such as bubbles, parachutes and bouncy toys, with an emphasis on the parents bonding with their children through the shared experience. The nearest Baby Sensory classes are held on Malden Road on Thursdays and are very popular with a waiting list for some of the groups - see the babysensory.com website for details. And for the ultimate in sensory overload, and definitely not for the faint-hearted, there are the Messy Mayhem sessions at the Children’s Centre on Friday mornings from 10-11. These are also very popular with parents as they give babies an opportunity to play with all kinds of gooey and sloppy substances (many of them edible), create an enormous mess, and then you can just go home and leave it to the wonderful Children’s Centre staff to deal with the bits of Bran Flake and baked bean which your children have been squelching around in. (Do contact the Centre before attending to check that the sessions are not over subscribed.)

e ducation How much do you know about Apprenticeships?

Apprenticeship Week is being held from March 3 to 7 this year, but how much do you know about what apprenticeships are? An apprenticeship enables anyone aged 16 or over to learn a profession by spending part of the week in college learning the skills they need and the rest in employment, getting paid to put their new knowledge to use. At Nescot we offer apprenticeships in all kinds of subjects – from Team Leading, Animal Studies and Childcare to Business Administration and IT – so our students work towards all kinds of different careers. Doing an apprenticeship means you can earn money by doing a real job, while learning the skills you need. You can learn at your own pace with support from both the college and your employer, and you’ll finish your qualification with great experience. Nescot is the only college in Surrey to have a REED NCFE Centre on campus, so if you’re interested in becoming an apprentice but don’t have a job, Nescot can help.

Taking on an apprentice is cost effective for your business, boosting productivity and improving your organisation’s skills base and reputation. You’ll get full support from Nescot, and all the training and assessment is arranged and delivered by the college. And don’t forget, apprenticeships for 16 to 18-yearolds are fully funded. If you’re interested in becoming an apprentice, or finding out more about how an apprentice could boost your business, call the college on 020 8394 8400, email apprenticeships@nescot.ac.uk ,visit the website www.nescot.ac.uk

short story Queen Victoria and her Bibimbap by Rajvir Randhawa

Tom sneered back at the teacher. Miss O’Shea squinted, stopping herself from reacting. She breathed deeply and counted to ten. “Tom, that was very naughty. What have you got to say for yourself?” “Sor…” “Sorry. That’s the word you’re looking for. NOT Sor” The rest of the children watched the David & Goliath struggle, stealing quiet glances at one another. “What’s the matter Tom? Tell me, I want you to tell me what’s wrong.” “Miss… I… don’t like history. It’s boring.” The class erupted in laughter, followed by the expectant glee of a Roman Ampitheatre crowd baying for blood. Miss O’Shea kept her eyes fixed on Tom, watching for anything that would betray his stoic façade. Was he provoking her? Tom stared back innocently, with a blank expression; no trace of the trademark smirk that usually accompanies his teacher baiting antics. He seemed to just be answering the question, truthfully. Miss O’Shea stared in to space. It was her job to make history interesting. That was why she had wanted to become a teacher in the first place; to engage her students, to make learning joyful. She wanted to be their ‘O Captain! My Captain’ teacher from the ‘Dead Poets Society’. To inspire and excite them and give flight to their imaginations. Silence ensued. The leaves on the trees outside the windows stopped rustling; footsteps in the classroom above froze; the din of traffic had no right of way to enter the walls of the school- all were snuffed out by the deafening silence which enveloped the room in to a vacuum of expectation. Miss O’Shea snapped out of her momentary trance- wherever she had been, she returned calm and reinvigorated. A faint smile pulled at her face. ‘Children… every one gather around. Everybody come to the front, sit on the desks here. Squeeze up, so everyone can get a seat. Tom, you sit here. Please. The simple request elicited a raucous few minutes of excitable activity from the children, quickly followed by a self-imposed silence. They sat fidgeting quietly, jostling for space. “History” announced Miss O’Shea “is a kind of magic”. She paused to watch the expressions on their faces;

62

some were surprised, some intrigued and some didn’t know what the hell she was talking about. “Through looking at history”, she continued “we are able understand our world today. History teaches us who we are today, how we got here. History can inspire us to be the very best we can be. There are lots of types of history… there’s the history of people and the lives the lead; the history of thingshow things came to be, like… the pencils you write with; the whiteboard; our iPads; the shoes you wear…” “Then there’s the history of places. Every single spot in the world, wherever we happen to be standing, has a rich history. Now, everybody close your eyes. Keep them closed. I want you to imagine the classroom is a time machine. I’m going to turn the dial back a few million years, but we’re going to stay in New Malden.” The children giggled. “Here we go. Keep your eyes closed. We’ve arrived and we must be very quiet. There are dinosaurs all around us and they look very hungry. I see a giant T-Rex in the distance; it’s huge. It’s coming this way. I don’t think we should hang around here - it’s too dangerous. Quick, I’m turning the dial forward… Ok, we’re safe. We’re on the move again. Let’s try coming forward in time. Ok, I’ve got it. The date is around 1800, but there’s nothing here. No one lives in New Maldenit’s not even called New Malden yet. Not much to see here. Let’s go forward a little more. Ah, here we

are, it’s 1846 and they’ve just finished building the railway station on the High St. People are arriving from London Waterloo. Oh wow, Queen Victoria is visiting New Malden. QUEEN VICTORIA is here! I’m going to move forward a little. Look, they’re building houses around the train station - people are settling here and these are the first houses being built. Wow! Hands up who lives close to the railway stationwithout opening your eyes. Ok moving forward a little- I can see Tudor Williams being built- ooh lets see what the date is- it’s around 1913. I love shopping in Tudor Williams, so many lovely things. Lets move forward, lets go to, mmm… 1970. Wow, those of you here that have mummies and daddies born in Korea, I can see lots of other mummies and daddies arriving from Korea. They’ve come straight from Heathrow airport. I can see why the chose to come and settle in New Malden- it’s because the South Korean ambassador came and lived here himself, so lot’s of people coming over from Korea settled here too. Look at all those lovely Korean supermarkets and restaurants. Mmm yummy, who doesn’t love a good Bibimbap. Yes I know you do Min Ji. Thank you. Close your eyes again. Ok, a couple more stops before we come back to the present. Now let’s try 2005, ooh look - that’s when the Village Voice magazine started - it was November when the first ever issue of the magazine was published and it’s still going strong! And finally, moving forward again - oh wow, it’s the Malden Fortnight. It’s really hot and sunny wonderful street stalls selling books, crafts, yummy cakes and all sorts. There’s dancing and singing outside the CI Tower and there’s the wonderful dog show on Blagdon Road. I can’t wait for the next one this summer. Ok, time to come back to the present. Everyone open your eyes when I count to 3. 1…2…3.”

Based in Godalming,

The children opened their eyes, squinting at their sunlit classroom. With some satisfaction Miss O’Shea perused their beaming faces. She looked over to Tom, still unsmiling. “Ok everyone back to your desks and pack your things away, it’s home time.” As the children waited impatiently to be reunited with their parents, Miss O’Shea whispered “Did you enjoy that Tom”. “It was ok” he responded nonchalantly. The disheveled line of children clamoured out of the school gate. “Hi Tom, did you have a good day?” asked Tom’s mum. “What was the worst thing and the best thing that happened today”. “Well, broccoli and rhubarb at lunchtime was the worst thing. Yuk. The best thing was our history lesson, it was brilliant.” Tom spoke in a stream of consciousness, struggling to take a breath- “We went back in a time machine and there were dinosaurs, and Queen Victoria won the dog show and she was eating Bibimbap and the Korean ambassador was in Tudor Williams and bought yummy cakes and she danced with him at the CI Tower…and…and… and…”

1 Place the lentils in a pan and cover with water. Bring to the boil then reduce the heat and simmer for 10 minutes. 2 Meanwhile, heat the olive oil in a deep frying pan and fry the shallots for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until just starting to soften. Sprinkle over the brown sugar and cook for a further 8-10 minutes until the shallots are golden and caramelised. 3 Drain the lentils and add to the frying pan with the stock, vinegar and 2 tsp of the mustard. Simmer for about 15 minutes until the lentils are just tender. Stir occasionally and add a little more stock, if necessary. 4 While the lentils are cooking, wrap each sausage with a pancetta rasher. Cook under a medium-hot grill for 8-10 minutes, turning frequently until the sausages are almost cooked through. Mix together the rest of the mustard with the honey and brush over the sausages. Cook for a further 3-4 minutes until the pancetta is crisp and browned. 5 Stir half the parsley into the lentils and season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Serve the lentils and sausages on warmed plates garnished with the remaining parsley.

TIP

Try your local butcher or deli or visit a farmers’ market to find the best quality Continental-style sausages. If you can’t find Toulouse sausages, Lincolnshire, Cumberland or pork and leek varieties will work just as well.

health Menopause – a marker for future health?

Village Voice is celebrating 100 editions – congratulations! When we reach our 100th birthday we can expect a message from the Queen, not a telegram any more but a ‘telemessage’, a combination of card and telegram, sent by post. You get one at 100 years, 105 years and then every year thereafter. You can also get one on the occasion of your Diamond wedding anniversary (60 years), 65th, 70th anniversary and every year thereafter if you let the palace know in good time. (www.royal.gov. uk) As a society we are living longer and middle age is on the move. A woman turning 40 this year is likely to live until she is nearly 90, and a little girl at nursery school now is likely to survive until she is 94. This may sound attractive, but most of us will agree that we want those extra years to be of high quality and in good health.

Many women do not realise that choices made around the time of the menopause will influence health in old age and that changes made in the 50’s can have a profound effect later in life. The menopause is a natural event, most women experience it around the age of 50 years, but some women go through the change much earlier with all the problems associated with menopause – flushes, sweats, mood swings and so on. More importantly, these women stop producing the oestrogen necessary to maintain good health and if hormones are not replaced, may be at an increase risk of osteoporosis (thin bones), early heart disease and other health problems. Women who experience menopause under 40 years of age are urged to consider Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) until the age of natural menopause to sustain the benefits of the female hormone oestrogen.

The menopause, even when at the normal of time of around 50 years is a good time to evaluate health, consider lifestyle changes for the better and look carefully at our health and that of those close to us. Do you have family with heart problems at a young age? Has one of our parents experienced an osteoporotic fracture, eg a hip fracture. Have you yourself broken a wrist after a minor fall? Are there changes you can make to improve health? Are you experiencing menopausal symptoms, which are troubling you, or stopping you from living life to the full? The British Menopause Society suggests that all women should have a health and lifestyle consultation at around 50, with an opportunity to discuss how to improve health after menopause and manage menopausal symptoms. Maybe now, the beginning of 2014 is the time to put aside any embarrassment, seek help and make choices for the future. By the way, for babies born this year, life expectancy is even more extraordinary. The Office for National Statistics predicts 30 per cent of baby boys and 39 per cent of baby girls born this year will reach 100.’ That will be a lot of royal messages.

the better life Cutting it fine by Derek Thompson The crisp and sometimes frosty mornings now don’t deter nature. It whispers, ‘spring is coming - honest - it’s just stuck in traffic.’ There’s work to be done, and plenty of it. To begin with, Anne decided more snowdrops would be just the thing, so she carefully lifted the clumps and divided them before replanting. My contribution was to go and put the kettle on. This is a time of year for taking stock in the garden and for preparing to restock. Inevitably, there are casualties; even perennials have their limitations and our perpetual chard has finally reached the end. We’ll definitely plant out more though, as perpetual chard is the gift that keeps on giving. It’s also time to start onions and spring salad leaves under cover. The tail end of winter - fingers crossed at time of writing - also marks that point where firewood stocks are running low and it’s time to bring out Charlie the Chainsaw. When I first acquired the saw it spent a long time in the shed with its blade pristine, despite Anne

68

constructing a sawhorse that looked like something out of The Krypton Factor. I’m afraid my reputation where pointy things, electricity, heat or water are concerned is well deserved. My initial worry with the chainsaw was that I’d be all fingers and thumbs. Fortunately, it’s a small, electric model, so no risk of anything involving the words whirring and ladder. Even so, the first time I used it I somehow managed to slip the chain from the mechanism. It’s all in the preparation: read the booklet first and then watch the clips on the Internet. Cutting up firewood can be immensely satisfying when you’ve lugged it up from the woods or rescued it from a lay-by. Okay, it might not be up there with building an igloo or trekking through the Amazon but it’s still working in harmony with the environment. The whole garden gets a bit of a spruce up now,

although we leave the anti-frost fleece around the vulnerable plants until warmer weather is assured. Our tools receive some much-needed attention as well, and I generally clean out the dried grass from the lawn mower that I promised myself I’d do before Christmas. Indoors, the Vietnamese coriander is thriving, as are the cuttings we took of icing sugar, penstemon and heather (it was discarded on a footpath and I thought waste not, want not). Our seeds are labelled up and ready - the usual vegetable suspects, plus agapanthus, last year’s chillies, a lemon seed or two and a ginger bud. (I’m ever hopeful of producing a completely homegrown curry sauce one day.) There are also repairs to consider. The roof of the coalbunker is more plastic sheeting than wood now, so every storm is followed by my own version of rooftop Russian roulette. Similarly, the shed door is surviving by a single, ailing hinge. It will all require time, effort and skill - luckily, I know just the neighbour. Speaking of which, we had a visitor recently - a former neighbour who moved away a year ago. He said he was just passing and asked if he could borrow our wheelbarrow. Unfortunately for him, we don’t have one. As it almost says in Hamlet, “Neither a lender nor a barrower be.” Derek Thompson is a writer and humourist based in the West Country. His writing blog can be found at www. alongthewritelines.blogspot.com and he is also a regular at strictlywriting.blogspot.com
