Dear Readers

There’s nothing like a ‘disaster’ to bring out community spirit in bucket loads, is there? - as was recently demonstrated during the evening of ‘The Great New Malden Flood of 2015’. Whilst we didn’t quite have to resort to Ark building (although there was much talk of it on Facebook) a true “Blitz Spirit” emerged as the waters rose, the roads closed and the flood seeped its way through the streets, quickly submerging gardens on Alric Avenue and threatening shops and businesses. Firefighters, police officers, insurance advisors and representatives from Thames Water were out in force from the outset and, whilst sand bags were passed from neighbour to neighbour, welcoming and warm cups of tea were also being offered to the emergency services! Even friends of ours safely “holed up” in Malden Hill and The Mount (the ‘apex’ of the town!) were left “high and dry” (thankfully, dry) as the mains water supply drizzled away for over 12 hours. Social media was soon buzzing with films of commuters taking off their shoes and rolling up their trousers to wade through the lake that had formed outside the station and as we hit the headlines on both BBC and ITV News it seemed that no-one in New Malden was unaffected! In much the same way as local children become giddy with excitement at the prospect of a huge snowstorm (“Will the schools be closed tomorrow, Mum?”), my beloved daughters (BDs) were anxious to walk down to the High Street to see for themselves what all the fuss was about and, good gracious, it was definitely a sight they won’t forget! As I explained to the BDs it was like filling a bath (the bath being the dip in the road under the railway bridge). Once that area was full (apparently 6 foot high) it naturally could only overflow. And overflow it did. So, along with many other ‘flood tourists’ we stood at the far end of the High Street and shared the moment with friends and neighbours as well as strangers. It was a late night for all and I was glued to Facebook for several hours keeping track of where the water was spreading, whilst my BDs were kept awake by the hovering police helicopter (monitoring the flow of the “river”) whilst worrying if Daddy would ever make it home (don’t worry, he did just after midnight) And so when we woke up the drama was all over - well, for most of us. For some lovely friends and neighbours it was less of a feeling of drama that Thursday night but one of dread and fear of their houses and businesses being flooded, leading to huge inconvenience, ongoing insurance claims and for some, irreparable damage to possessions. The emergency services worked through the night to ensure the situation was resolved as swiftly as possible and, thanks to a comparatively quick clean up operation, life in New Malden had all but returned to normal by morning. One positive that comes out of a sudden event such as this, is a reminder of the wonderful community spirit we have here in New Malden. It reinforces how incredibly fortunate we are in our little corner of the developed world that natural disasters (not even those caused by burst water pipes) are few and far between. We must also never take for granted the fact that we have clean, fresh, sterile water whenever we want it just by turning on a tap. How vulnerable did we all feel when we were deprived of that - even for a few hours? So, after what officially looks set to be the coldest June for the past We also publish Worcester Park Life 40 years (and what feels like one of the wettest) let’s look forward covering the KT4 postcode to a warm and sunny July with a fabulous and fun packed Malden Fortnight just oozing more of that community spirit for everyone to enjoy!

New Malden How well do you know your neighbours? by Robin Gill

Ferguson George Donaldson Smith was born in Aberdeen on 5th October 1914, and died in Malden Green Avenue Old Malden on 15th September 2013, and although his death received no coverage in our local papers, it was extensively reported in the nationals, because Smith had led a remarkable life. I should mention that he had been awarded the DFC (Distinguished Flying Cross ) and bar, and been made a CVO (Commander Of Royal Victorian Order) an award given for services to the monarchy in a personal capacity. When he retired from his job in 1972 he had reached the rank of Deputy Assistant Commissioner, and was Head of Special Branch at Scotland Yard. He was fluent in French, German, and Russian.

after passing out at “Peel House” in 1934, and in 1936 he became a member of Special Branch at Scotland Yard.

Early life Smith was educated at Aberdeen Grammar School. He was Head Prefect, and captain of rugby and cricket. On leaving school he entered the Metropolitan Police,

The DFC had been awarded for action in the Battle of Berlin in 1944. On 20th January, Flying Officer Smith was one of a flight of No 101 Squadron, which he had

In 1941 after the ban preventing police officers joining the forces was lifted, he volunteered for the RAF being trained and commissioned in Canada as a navigator.

that scrambled German radio messages. Smith flew 30 missions into enemy territory during the war. Sometimes, he used his ability to speak German to act as controller to spread disinformation to the enemy. In April 1945 he was awarded a bar to his DFC, and after a period in Transport Command, he was later demobbed in February 1946 as a Flight Lieutenant.

joined in August 1943, on a bombing mission to the German capital when his plane was intercepted by German fighters. He was wounded in the back, chest, leg, and bottom by enemy fire, but despite this, he tried to free two of his comrades who were trapped in their turrets. Unfortunately, their wounds were too severe, and it was only after they died, did Smith relinquish his efforts to help them. After the damaged Lancaster successfully landed back at Ludford Manor in Lincolnshire, thanks in no small part to Smith’s navigation, he was taken to hospital where he spent a month having various pieces of shrapnel removed. Attacks on the planes from the squadron were frequent as they were equipped with special antennae

Back in the force He rejoined the Met where he moved swiftly through the ranks in Special Branch. He was heavily involved with the investigation of Dr Klaus Emil Fuchs a nuclear scientist born in Germany, who worked in the United States on the first atomic bomb. Fuchs had been spying for the Russians since 1943. He returned to England in 1946, and in 1950 was arrested and sentenced to 14 years for offences under the Official Secrets Act, after working at the Atomic Energy Establishment at Harwell. After Fuchs arrest, Smith hid in a cupboard at Brixton Prison to overhear an incriminating conversation between Fuchs and another scientist on the telephone, and this enabled the police to secure strong evidence against him. Smith was posted to protection duties on the infrequent visits of the Duke Of Windsor (late Edward

VIII) to this country. He also accompanied the Queen on her visit to Ghana in 1961, where he was responsible for her security. Smith was also involved in the apprehension of the Portland spy ring. This group removed and copied top secret information from the Admiralty Underwater weapons Establishment in Dorset. Harry Houghton who worked at the base asked his girlfriend Ethel Gee to copy the documents, which were then passed via a go-between Gordon Lonsdale, to a couple in Ruislip called Peter and Helen Kroger who had a front as antiquarian book dealers. Smith followed this path to its conclusion, which involved observation from a neighbour’s (Bill & Ruth Search) spare bedroom. They were all arrested in an operation on 7th January 1961. Houghton and Gee, in London, where Gee’s handbag was found to contain plans of HMS Dreadnought, Britain’s first nuclear submarine. Lonsdale was arrested in Dorset, and Smith went to the Kroger’s house in Ruislip where he asked the couple to accompany him back to London for questioning. Helen Kroger asked whether she could stoke the boiler to keep the house warm while they were away, but before she could leave Smith examined the contents of her handbag and found it contained information in the

form of microdots. These same microdots were found in some of the antiquarian books that had been sent to Russia. A thorough search of the house revealed spying equipment, fake passports, and large amounts of cash, together with a long range transmitter capable of sending messages to Moscow. The Krogers were in fact Morris and Lona Cohen well known spies in America, and after serving time, they were exchanged for British agent Gerald Brooke in 1969, while Lonsdale who was a Russian, real name Konon Trofimovich Molody, had been exchanged with the Soviets for Greville Wynn in 1966. Houghton and Gee served 10 years of their 15 year sentence, changed their names and married. Also in 1961, Smith assisted in the arrest of the notorious double agent George Blake. Blake’s betrayals had sent 400 British agents to their deaths overseas. Sentenced to jail for 42 years, he escaped from Wormwood Scrubs in 1966 and fled to Russia. Later in 1961 Smith arrested John Vassall from the Admiralty who had also spied for the Russians. Vassall had become a Russian agent while working at the British Embassy in Moscow during the 1950s. He was identified by a Soviet defector, and Smith helped to verify the allegation. Vassall was sentenced to 18 years, and Smith was promoted to Detective Superintendent in January 1963. In 1966 Smith was promoted to Deputy Assistant Commissioner and installed as head of Special Branch. At that time, the force consisted of over 300 officers at Scotland Yard, and a unit in each of the 42 regional forces, all under the Special Branch section. Whilst at Scotland Yard, Smith also kept tags on Oswald Moseley, Laurens Van Der Post and Eddie Chapman together with various members of the British Communist Party, taping some of their meetings. In his early years his targets were the Russians and Eastern Bloc countries, and in later years the IRA. Life in Malden Smith had moved to Malden Green Avenue in 1952, with his wife Margaret (nee Murphy) who he had married in Hammersmith in 1944, and they lived there for the latter part of his career in the police force, and many years of well deserved retirement. He retired on October 5th 1972 his 59th birthday. He retained his RAF moustache, and with his dapper dress, upright bearing, and old-fashioned charm, he fitted in perfectly with the other residents of Old Malden. His wife died in 2003.

at the lead, the local (and wider) community got together a collection to have the memorial repaired in time for that year’s Remembrance Day. 96 year old Ferguson Smith is recorded as donating £50 towards this worthwhile cause, probably remembering his mortally wounded comrades he tried so valiantly to rescue some 67 years before. N.B. I wish to acknowledge the unknown person who initially brought to my attention Ferguson Smith’s remarkable life. Without the anonymous advice, I would be ignorant of the great man lately in our midst.

Following Smith’s death in 2013 the tabloids came calling in Malden Green Avenue asking the neighbours what they knew about the man who had lived at number eight. Probably, reflecting on how he would have reacted, they feigned surprise at the heroic exploits of their former friend, letting him take his secrets to the grave. Remembering his crew One final postscript relates to Smith the local man. When, in 2011 mindless yobs tore down the War Memorial at St John The Baptist Old Malden to get

ClariVein® is a ut walk in walk o wing procedure allo to you to return ies regular activit the next day.

Get your legs ready for summer - ClariVein® Many people suffer from varicose veins at some point in their life which can cause significant pain and discomfort. A revolutionary procedure ClariVein®, available at only a handful of hospitals in the UK has been developed to treat varicose veins, more quickly and simply than previous traditional procedures. This pioneering treatment allows you to return to regular activities the very next day and is now available at Spire St. Anthony’s Hospital.

Varicose veins are caused by a backflow of blood in the superficial veins near to the skin. This is due to the valves in the vein becoming weakened or damaged over time. Blood collects in the affected vein, causing it to become engorged or twisted in appearance. Once the vein is damaged, it does not tend to recover without treatment and will usually get worse over time. Symptoms Symptoms of varicose veins will differ between individuals but can include: • Blue or purple discolourations under the skin • Aching or discomfort in the legs • Swelling of the ankles • Itchiness of the legs Treatment - Clarivein® Treatment of vein problems has seen significant advances throughout the past decade, and it can be difficult to keep up with modern developments. It is therefore crucial to visit a hospital where the latest medical innovations are available via world class consultants and state-of-theart equipment.

We are now offering ClariVein®, a newly available, minimally-invasive treatment. Unlike traditional vein stripping, ClariVein® can be performed using a local anaesthetic. A rotating catheter is inserted into the affected vein(s) which releases a drug to seal the vein from within. The vein will then dissolve over a period of approximately six weeks. You will be advised to wear a compression stocking for one week following treatment, and can return to regular activities (including driving) immediately after the procedure. Prof Loftus specialises in the treatment of varicose veins and holds regular clinics at Spire St Anthony’s on alternate Tuesday afternoons. If you would like to book an appointment please call us on: 020 8335 4678.

Community

A threat to local wildlife by

SINC to another SINC on the railway embankment in Raynes Park. The entire strip under consideration for a cycle track is therefore already designated as being of significant ecological importance . Many residents of New Malden and Raynes Park, while supporting the general principle of improving cycling facilities in their communities, are very concerned about this particular aspect of the project. There are a number of concerns:

David Alric (Local children’s author)

It is proposed, as part of a larger scheme to improve cycling facilities in London, to create a cycle path from New Malden railway station to West Barnes Lane in Raynes Park. This will run alongside the railway on a strip of land owned by Thames Water. There are no buildings on this land for beneath it are buried very large waterpipes that supply a large area of Southwest London and are part of a ring main. Because of this the land has been relatively undisturbed and over many years has become a haven for local wildlife. The western end of the strip (ie New Malden) is currently designated as a Site of Importance for Conservation (SINC) and this continues into Merton as a Green Corridor linking the New Malden

Firstly, this area contains a large number and variety of mammals, amphibians and birds, notably including badgers, bats, hedgehogs, slow-worms, frogs, newts, herons and woodpeckers. These and other fauna are supported by various trees, shrubs, reeds and flowers and their accompanying insects. As the route of the proposed path is very isolated it would need to be well lit at all times to ensure the safety of those using the cycle path and provision for this lighting is included in the proposal. Unfortunately this would be devastating for the nocturnal animals in the area. To give but a single example, green corridors like this are vital to the survival of animals such a bats that shun the light and which

rely on such unlit corridors (steadily becoming fewer in number) to gain accesss to other feeding and breeding grounds. This precious wildlife habitat, possibly unique in a suburban setting,, would be largely destroyed if this development is allowed to proceed. This was the conclusion of an expert ecologist when invited to conduct a formal survey of the site some years ago when a similar scheme was proposed. The council accepted his findings and that scheme was abandoned as, we believe, should this one. Secondly, there are no funds available for the ongoing maintenance of the the proposed facility which means that both the RBK and Merton will have to fund the considerable replacement, maintenance and policing costs of the project into the forseeable future. There are clear implications for council tax payers in this scenario! Thirdly, there are concerns about the security of properties adjacent to the facility and this, we assured by experts, will affect property values and insurance premiums on houses, cars and personal policies for the entire surrounding neighbourhood. There are many other concerns: users of the cycle path in this isolated gulley will be at risk of personal attack; there will be a constant threat of serious flooding from the high-pressure water pipes (as recently demonstrated) ; there will be serious security implications for Thames Water as a major pipeline will be vulnerable to damage or attack and the same applies to the adjoining railway line and signal boxes. There will be a greatly increased risk of vandalism, drug abuse, the use of airweapons and other forms of anti-social behaviour. Fly-tipping and litter will be a major problem for those using the path itself and for local properties, the adjoining golf club, the recreation ground and sportsfields, and Network Rail. With unhindered public access to the site there will be a greatly increased risk of illegal habitation by individuals ‘sleeping rough’ or by more organised gruops. The removal of such groups, once they have become established, is an expensive, time-consuming and sometimes unsuccessful exercise as many councils know th their cost. Finally, there is no over-riding requirement for this development. A well-signed, safe and satisfactory cycle route already exists between New Malden and Raynes Park and many residents have observed that there are not a great number of cyclists actually making this journey. It is estimated by the project developers, a company called Sustrans, that the cycling time between New Malden and Raynes Park will be cut from 12 minutes to 6 minutes if the proposed cycle track is implemented.

There are many keen cyclists in my family but we have to ask ourselves whether a six-minute saving in cycling journey time is really worth the destruction of a unique suburban wild-life haven. And is it worth the introduction of problems related to anti-social behaviour and security that would affect the quality of life for the surrounding communities? In my view, one shared by many residents of New Malden and Raynes Park, the answer is: certainly not!

There is a petition to stop this development. If you would like to sign this please ring 0208 942 4696 between 9 – 10 am or 5 – 6 pm

Risk vs uncertainty All investors consider return. Most investors consider risk. Only a few consider uncertainty. Those last two statements may seem too many to be synonymous, and in fact for decades have been treated as such by the financial world at large taking risk and uncertainty to mean basically the same thing. Yet there is a difference between the two which, whilst sometimes difficult to articulate, is as essential to investing as the difference between an equity and a bond. The first academic work published of the distinction between risk and uncertainty was by University of Chicago economist Frank Knight in 1921: “Uncertainty must be taken in a sense radically distinct from the familiar notion of Risk, from which it has never been properly separated.... The essential fact is that ‘risk’ means in some cases a quantity susceptible of measurement, while at other times it is something distinctly not of this character…” Although this description gets to the heart of the matter, an explanation with examples might help to clear things up. Risk – we don’t know what will happen in the future, but we have a reasonable idea of the possible outcomes. The easy example here is forecasting the outcome of rolling a die. Uncertainty – we don’t know what will happen in the future, and we have no idea even of the number or kind of options available, let alone a concept of what the probabilities might be. As an example here, think about forecasting what colour an unseen die is… In the first case, you can calculate the probabilities in your head – there are six numbers, each with an equal chance of appearing. In the second case, it is difficult to even think of the main variable, namely how many colours are there in existence?!

written, we see a less numerical illustration of this difference. In J.R.R Tolkein’s The Hobbit, Bilbo Baggins wins a magic ring off the creature Gollum by winning a riddle contest. However, Bilbo’s winning riddle is “what have I got in my pocket?” Most people reading the book feel a bit discomfited at that point – clearly the question is not a riddle in any sense! The distinction is between the unknown - hinted at with clues - and the unknowable – the contents of a pocket could be anything in the world. Ultimately, had Gollum been able to clearly articulate the breach of the riddle-game rules through a definition of uncertainty, the whole fate of Middle Earth could have been different… The odd thing is that there is acknowledgement of this in children’s stories and simple human psychology, but it seems to be forgotten when applied to financial theory. Asking a financial forecaster “what’s in my pocket?” and then, based on his reply, only buying that item would not be a sensible investment approach. And yet, when the same forecaster gives his prediction on where the FTSE 100 might be in a year, heads are nodded, notes are taken, and positions bought or sold. It is not that the forecaster will always be wrong – he or she may be excellent at their job. It is the lack of acknowledgment for uncertainty that is misleading, the implication that financial market outcomes are as predictable as rolling a die, and that sufficient computational power can produce reliable probabilities when this is simply not the case. So what can we do as investment managers to mitigate against uncertainty? The first step is admitting that it exists. The second step is trickier, because once we’ve conceded that volatility and standard deviation are not exhaustive measures, we have to distinguish between times when we should use them and times when we should not. This can be key place for an investment manager to add value, because analysis of non-quantifiable risks is always, by definition, going to be an area for judgement rather than a formula.

The key point is the difference between something being unknown and being unknowable. If we look at one of the most famous children’s stories ever To advertise email jenny@nmvv.co.uk or call 020 8336 2915

New Malden Matters

The New Malden Future Group The Surrey Comet recently carried an article headed: “A bold vision to breathe new life into town centre”So for those not lucky enough to see us - allow me to elaborate: The New Malden Future Group (NMFG) was established as aresponse to the Council’s Draft Development Brief which RBK producedto start/continue the process of developing a large swathe of land at the heart of New Malden. This brief was rejected by Councillors and a second draft is now being produced, this time with some new ideas from NMFG. The area involved stretches from the High Street through to Burlington School and includes the multi-storey car park; the Malden Centre; Blagdon Road Open space; Hobkirk House and Park House on Burlington Road. The Council owns much (but not all) of this land so there is a unique opportunity for the development to be controlled, which could revitalise New Malden for all of us, into the future. Who are We? Our Group has 11 volunteer members. We have 2 representatives from each of TWO Residents’ Associations, the Groves and New Malden (Beverley Ward); members from the Community of New Malden Businesses, and local residents including a planner and an architect, who have been invaluable in helping us to develop ideas from their experience to put forward to the Council. Please read on to hear our ideas.......... What’s happened so far? We have produced our own documents answering the RBK Brief; held several meetings and workshops with Planners, Councillors and the Council Leader, all of whom have promised to listen and collaborate in this process so that residents have the chance to be properly represented andcan help shape the future of New Malden! We have visited a recently completed London Borough of Lambeth development at Clapham carried out in partnership with a Developer. This is similar in many ways to our potential site, and was built at NO COST to the Council as it was funded by housing which was built as part of the site. We hope that some of these experiences will help to guide our Council towards some alternative ways of developing the site to a high quality.

This process is on-going as you read this - but look out for local information and questionnaires which will be circulated shortly........ What do we Want? To start with...An attractive community focus - A Heart for New Malden! A Town Square with a new Leisure Centre/Swimming Pool to provide at least all those facilities already on offer at the Malden Centre, and phased so that the Malden Centre can continue to keep its customers until the New Centre is completed and opened. A new Library/Cultural facility with space for exhibitions, art, performance space, a cinema and meeting rooms. A relocated Post Office to invigorate the New Town Square....and more? As a lot of this land is ugly, flattened and behind hoardings, so we know it will be developed one way or another. But our aim is to secure the best we possibly can - New Malden has been sadly neglected for too long! The Care Act – Carers

- expert advice on The Care Act from Staywell’s Information, Advice & Advocacy service. In England, millions of people provide unpaid care or support to an adult family member or friend, either in their own home or somewhere else. ‘Caring’ for someone covers lots of different things, like helping with their washing, dressing or eating, taking them to regular appointments or keeping them company when they feel lonely or anxious. If this sounds like you, you are considered to be a ‘carer’. The Care Act says you can get help and advice from the council, national services and local networks to carry on caring and look after your own wellbeing. The council where the person you care for lives can help you find the right support. This could be a direct payment to spend on the things that make caring easier; or practical support, like arranging for someone to step in when you need a short break. Or you may prefer to be put in touch with local support groups so you have people to talk to. A carer’s assessment is about you and your wellbeing and will look at the different ways that caring affects your life and work out how you can carry on doing the things that are important to you and your family. Your physical, mental and emotional wellbeing will be at the heart of this assessment. It should cover your caring role, your feelings about caring, your physical, mental and emotional health, and how caring

34

affects your work, leisure, education, wider family and relationships. As a result, you may be eligible for support and advice and guidance to help you with your caring responsibilities. You can have a carer’s assessment even if the person you care for does not get any help from the council, and they will not need to be assessed themselves. You can ask for a carer’s assessment at any time. Councils may charge a fee for some of the support services they offer. If they think you might benefit from a service, a council might ask to look at your finances to see whether you can afford to pay. If you can’t afford to pay, they might offer you the service for free. Councils may also need to look at the finances of the person that you care for if they are going to provide support directly to that person. If a council decides that you have needs that meet the new national level they will discuss with you what support they can provide. If your needs are not eligible, the council will give you information and advice about other types of support that are available in your area. This may include putting you in touch with local voluntary organisations such as Kingston Carers Network and Staywell. To find more about support for carers locally contact Kingston Carers Network on 020 3031 2757 and Staywell on 020 8408 8170.

Nonsuch Park is a link to Tudor England. The Palace that once stood here was a hugely expensive symbol of Henry VIII’s power. The Friends of Nonsuch offer guidance to a 7 feet model which has been created from contemporary documentation, paintings and an excavation of the Palace site in 1959. The model is on display in the Stable Wing of the much later Nonsuch Mansion in the heart of Nonsuch Park. The model is open from 11 am until 3 pm every Sunday in November and December; admission £2.50; cars via Cheam Gate. For further information please visit the website at www.friendsofnonsuch.co.uk

Kids

Dads and Doughnuts

New Toddler Group Launch coming soon! Dads and their toddlers are invited to a brand new group starting at (New Malden Methodist Church) on (Saturday 11th July) from (2-4 pm). The group, called ‘Dads and Doughnuts’ as part of the “Who let the dad’s out?” umbrella is run along the same lines as traditional parent and toddler groups, but is specifically for fathers, granddads or male carers and their children. It’s an opportunity for dads to have quality time with their child and to socialise with other fathers. It’s also a chance for mums to have some well deserved time off. Charge is £2 per child to include refreshments. The session will be very relaxed, there will be lots of toys available for the children to play with, a craft activity so dads can help their little one create a masterpiece, plus tea/coffee, doughnuts and biscuits for the children. It’s our very first session, so everyone will be in the same boat. I’d really recommend any dads with a spare afternoon to come along and check us out. Your children will thank you for it! Clubs Malden Camera Club – 60th Anniversary Photographic Exhibition 60 years ago, a group of people got together to create a new club in New Malden. One dedicated to photography, to getting the best from your camera … and to having a good time together with likeminded people. 60 years on, the club still has that same attitude. We are very committed to helping each other take better pictures (by the way – what is ‘better’ is very hard to define, and that makes it more interesting as we usually have different views on it) and encourage one another in doing it. But we are not a dour set of people, talking f-numbers and apertures: we want to be making pictures that we like, and that others like. And that especially applies to the judges at our regular competitions! We meet most weeks on Thursday evenings – 8 p.m. at the Malden Library in Kingston Road. Our website (www.maldencameraclub.org.uk) has all the details about what we do and where and when we meet. Photography is a mix of family and holiday pictures – reminding us of where we were and of people we know and love – and of pictures that provide fun for the eyes, that we would like to see hanging on the walls of our lounge. It is hard work to do either one of these well – and we have regular talks, competitions and open evenings where we work together in practical sessions. And we also go out together on photographing expeditions – just this year we have spent an evening by the river at Kingston, been to the ‘Butterflies in the Glasshouse’ at Wisley, done a dawn walk around Claremont Park as well as several others. Each year for the last 60 years we have held an exhibition of our pictures in New Malden. Recently these have been held at the Malden Methodist Church (the ‘Church in the High Street’) during the annual Malden Fortnight. We have a show of our best prints as well as a rolling display of our digital images. All the pictures have been judged by an expert – this year Jay Charnock is doing the job for us – and best in show awards are made covering a number of areas

… landscape, portrait, creative and others. This year we are holding the exhibition on Friday 3rd July and Saturday 4th July at the Methodist Church – at the start of the Malden fortnight. Please come along, I think you’ll be excited by the pictures we are going to show. I hope that we will inspire you to take some pictures yourselves – and to come along to our meetings each week. www.maldencameraclub.org.uk

Malden Community Choir Performance of `Ruddigore’ by Gilbert and Sullivan

Some members of the choir have written about their experience before the first in-house performance earlier this year: `Ruddigore has all the elements of a pantomime - a wicked witch’s curse, an heir in disguise, ghosts, two men wanting the same girl and some good tunes. It is also a parody of the stock melodrama — the villain who carries off the maiden; the priggishly good-mannered poor-but-virtuous-heroine; the hero’s faithful old retainer; the snake in the grass; the wild, mad girl, and so forth. Anyone who succeeds to the title has to commit a crime every day — or perish in inconceivable agony.’ `The subtitle of the opera is ‘The Witch’s Curse’ - and so it seemed! Various elements combined to make this one of our most challenging productions: we were cajoled into learning almost the whole opera by heart; the women were asked to wear dresses in pastel colours (a particular challenge for me as I wear predominantly bright colours!);

for the first time we decided to include some dancing; the accompanist broke her arm a couple of months before our first performance; a soloist was taken ill... However, under the inspirational guidance of our conductor everything came together and what fun this absurd plot was - for both the singers and the audience.” “I particularly enjoy learning and performing Gilbert & Sullivan operettas, in a friendly and stress free situation. As well as being musical masterpieces they are very amusing, and having to perform them in public gives one something to strive for.’ ‘There’s always a delightful enthusiasm as people prepare for G&S shows, with their immensely popular music and humour, helped by dressing up and dance. Chorus members as well as soloists get the chance to become for a little while rural bridesmaids, or fairies, or pirates, or even ghosts, opportunities that may be rather rare in ordinary life. “Having our parts recorded on disk really helped us to be up and running (hopefully) from the start of rehearsals.” “The dancing sequence was a challenge - for both the singers and our patient choreographer , which resulted in a lot of stumbling into each other, trying to make us as nimble and sure-footed as our instructor! All part of the comedy!” ` The challenge of finding a suitable outfit for a bridesmaid led me to scour the charity shops but with no result until I found a duvet cover which I cut up and made into a dress, with matching stole! It called upon dressmaking skills I had not used for about 30 years but it was great fun to do. Often the choir performances require a degree of inventiveness and co-operation beyond just singing together and add to an already engaging and enjoyable hobby.’ `We are very lucky to have the support of professional singers to take the main solo parts. This has given the choir (and the performance) a real boost. There is also the opportunity for choir members to take solo roles - and to have the privilege of sharing additional soloist rehearsals with professionals .” ‘It will be great to have the opportunity to perform it again as part of the Malden Fortnight.’

Pets Corner Keeping Pet’s Healthy in Summer by Jane @ Woofs a Daisy

All pet owner’s welcome summer, long dog walks, our rabbits and guinea pigs enjoying the lawn, the family cat enjoying being out and about prowling around in the lighter evenings. But there are many things to look out for when we have animals to care for, here are just two issues that need attention every single summer. Dog owners know the perils of leaving dogs in hot cars yet every year, without fail, there are fatalities with dogs left unattended. Parked cars can be death-traps for dogs: On a 78-degree day, the temperature inside a parked car can soar to between 100 and 120 degrees in just minutes, on a 90-degree day, the interior temperature can reach as high as 160 degrees, the same as your oven, in less than 10 minutes. Don’t leave your dog even for a few minutes, it could be fatal. Legally if you see an animal in distress you have to call 999, please don’t be afraid to do so. Once the police

54

realise it is an animal welfare issue they will contact the RSPCA. Do not call the RSPCA first, this would delay things. Should the animal be in a very bad way the natural instinct is to break a window but beware that without proper justification, this could be classed as criminal damage. Tell the police what you intend to do, take photos as evidence, get witness names and remember the law states that you have a lawful excuse to commit damage if you believe that the owner of the property that you damage would consent to the damage if they knew the circumstances (section 5(2)(a) Criminal Damage Act 1971). So, leave them at home they are much better off and happier. A summer danger to our rabbits and guinea pigs is fly strike or Myiasis caused by eggs of the green bottle fly. Attracted to damp fur, urine, faeces and the odour of scent glands they lay their eggs on or around the animal’s rear. These eggs hatch within hours resulting

in maggots that eat into the flesh as well as releasing dangerous toxins. If you see anything suspicious consult your vet immediately. The best treatment of course is prevention, so in warm weather • remove soiled bedding every day • do not overfeed, this can lead to diarrhoea further attracting flies, this includes greens and fruit • check twice a day to ensure they are clean and dry • disinfect hutches weekly • keep your pet clean and use a cleanser such as tea tree wipes to remove any soiled traces • trim the hair around the tail to keep it short and easier to care for • buy reputable fly strike sprays or creams

Nature Garden Birds by Sarah Harris

By this time of year most of our garden birds have waved off the the last of their young and now they will turn to some well-earned relaxation! Sadly the blackbirds which were nesting in my garden weren’t successful with their first brood. I was heartbroken to find the remains of all five chicks scattered across the ground, having been killed by a predator just before they fledged. But predation by cats, rodents and other birds is very common and is the reason why many garden birds have two to three broods in a season. My spirits were lifted this week however, when my garden was visited by a young robin that appears to be holding his own with the numerous young sparrows also making use of the feeders. I love to watch the behaviour of the birds in my garden, and one of my favourite things to observe is the act of bathing and preening. The care of feathers is vitally important to the survival of all birds and they have a daily routine which needs to be fitted in, no matter how busy or tired they are. Feathers insulate the body as well as giving birds the ability to fly. If feathers become unkempt and bedraggled then flying becomes inefficient and the birds lose body heat. This wasted energy is difficult to replace especially when food is scarce during the winter. Bathing is the first stage of the cleaning routine and this is why a bird bath or a pond is an essential component of anyone wanting to entice birds in to their garden. Blackbirds are particularly fun to watch at bath time. They really throw themselves into the activity, energetically splashing and shaking themselves, spreading out their wings and fanning their tail. Feathers need to be wet as they are then more receptive to the preening oil. Bathing also helps to dislodge dust and parasites. The flock of starlings in my sister’s garden all stand round the edge of the bird bath and take it in turns to take a dip. The wood pigeons in my garden prefer to shower though and like to take full advantage of a downpour. They can be found sitting in the rain, where they lean over to one side and then the other, raising each wing in turn to let the rain fall under their wings. If you are lucky you may see a bird then begin

to preen once they’ve had a good bath. They will settle somewhere where they can concentrate at the task in hand and not worry about predators. Birds use their beaks to collect preening oil from a gland near the base of their tail which they then distribute on to their feathers and wings. They then painstakingly take individual feathers in their beaks and gently tease them back into shape, effectively zipping back together the individual barbs that have come apart to realign ruffled feathers making them smooth and sleek again. As children we have all marvelled at the engineering in miniature of feathers and how you can pull the individual feather strands apart and then smooth them all back in place again with the swipe of a finger. As well as bathing with water you might see birds dust bathing. Our healthy population of house sparrows in New Malden are very keen dust bathers and will take advantage of areas of fine dust or sand. You can see their dust pits at the edge of the grass areas down The Cut. If you provide an area of sand or dust in your garden you are bound to find these little brown birds wallowing in their individual pits rubbing their heads in the dust, throwing it around and having a good shake. I unintentionally provided an excellent dust bathing area in my garden when a few years ago I removed my old lawn. Once the surface had dried out, a dozen or so sparrows could be seen taking full advantage and were happily wallowing away when a sparrow hawk with bright yellow legs dropped from nowhere into the middle of this scene! He wasn’t lucky enough to get his dinner on that day, but it reminded me again that these birds have to fight a daily battle to survive. Happy birding!

A Malden Man

With books and toys, And cakes and dolls, With arts and sweets Or crafts and treats. With Korean to eat, There’ll be beers to compete, With a Pimms or a wine, Or scones with cream/ jam.

by Raj Randhawa ‘Malden Fortnight’s a Comin’. The sun is (almost) out; the sky is (almost) blue, which can only mean that Malden Fortnight is (almost) upon us.

There’ll be brass bands blowing, With choirs aloud, Karaoke at the Fountain. Blagdon Road’s jumping dogs.

It’s a time for community, and fun days spent ambling around the (not-so) mean streets of New Malden, with a pocket full of change, just because...

There’ll be neighbours to meet, And friends to greet, And John from down the street, Who otherwise you’d never meet.

There are knick-knacks to buy, And cakes to devour, Teas to sip and ice creams to lick, With parades to watch, And dances to dance, Where nobody cares who’s watching you prance.

New Malden will be abuzz, With goodwill and trust, And for two weeks this year, We become a family affair.

The stalls come alive,

A glimpse in to how we should be, every day of the year.
