Dear Readers

Back in August our family was invited/persuaded to join some lovely friends who had entered the Prudential FreeCycle. On the Thursday before the event I went and bought a bike. Learning to cycle a couple of decades since my last biking experience was, I can confirm, just like ‘riding a bike!’ We had an absolutely fabulous day out and I’d thoroughly recommend it – 1st August next year. Loads of key roads are shut in central London and it was such a pleasure to ride past the likes of Buckingham Palace and St Paul’s Cathedral as part of a peloton (I like to convince myself) and free of traffic. And it was the first time I’d seen ‘in real life’ the amazing poppy installation at the Tower of London. The whole circuit stopped and gazed with wonder at the sea of red that was slowly being planted. A very appropriate use of the word ‘awesome’. Totally breathtaking. Local resident, historian and author Dr Tracy Borman has written us a piece with a bit of background to the poppies at the Tower and a very personal experience of her day of planting some of the ceramic flowers. Tracy also took the stunning picture on our front cover. You can read her story on page 14 along with details about how you can volunteer to help dismantle the instillation. The annual New Malden Remembrance Parade will start at 9.20am on Sunday 9th November from Presberg Road to the War Memorial with the service beginning at 9.45am. More information can be found on page 21. In the lead up to Christmas remember that we’re here to promote your local Christmas Fairs and Shopping Events – just email the details – and any other events you’re organising. Anyway, as always, a big thank you to everyone who has contributed and advertised this month. If you’re a local business wanting to reach out to your local community then why not call for a chat about affordable advertising in your local community magazine. Remember, we deliver to most homes every second month so if you’re not able to pick up a magazine on the months it’s not delivered to you, you can read it on your smart phone/tablet or PC. Until next month, best wishes

New Malden High Street Christmas Light Switch On

- a message from the Malden Fortnight Committee and New Malden Rotary The Christmas lights in the High Street will be turned on by Father Christmas on Friday 28th November at 5.30 p.m. As in previous years Father Christmas will then make his way to St Georges Square to meet the children and hand out presents kindly donated by the Malden Fortnight Committee and Tudor Williams. This always popular evening is being organised by the Malden Fortnight Committee. We will have the Borough Brass Band playing in the High Street as well as local school choirs in the High Street and St George’s Sq. Due to changes in police priorities, Father Christmas will be starting from the top of the High Street instead of Presburg Road to avoid the need to slow traffic around the Fountain roundabout. Although this event attracts increasing numbers of spectators on the High Street and at St. George’s Square, we had unfortunate instances of lost tempers whilst queuing for Father Christmas, mainly due to impatience and queue jumping. Last year Father Christmas gave out 400 presents to the children. This is a fantastic figure and I am sure you can see that the parents/carer/grandparents that come along with the children swell the numbers queuing to over 1000! So can I please ask that everyone follows the advice given by marshalls and queue with patience. In that vein, we are looking for more volunteers to help marshal the crowds from the High Street to the Square and in the Square itself. If you would like to volunteer ( from 5pm to 6:30pm on the night), then please contact Peter on 07946047146. Last year we had trouble with the main Christmas lights fusing due to the ageing condition of the catenary lights, which form the chain from lamppost to lamppost along the High Street. The Neighbourhood Committee of the Royal Borough have agreed to install new catenaries, but these will not be available until the New Year. The catenaries will therefore not be illuminated this year to protect the main lights. But do we want the Christmas lights at all? The Council does not pay for the Christmas lights, although they do give us a generous grant; they are arranged by the Rotary Club and should be paid for by the businesses in the High Street. Last year only 27 of the 187 businesses in the High Street contributed and

6

we suffered a loss of £1,300. If this loss is repeated this year the future of the lights is at risk. We are inviting the public to join with the local businesses and the Royal Borough to ensure that we can continue to provide a High Street to be proud of at Christmas time. Collecting tins will be available on the switch on night and you are invited to donate or to send a cheque to The Treasurer, The Rotary Club of New Malden, 2, Mayfair Avenue, Worcester Park KT4 7SL, writing ‘Christmas Lights’ on the back of your cheque. Thank you to all the businesses and members of the public who make this event such a success. Peter Hope and Peter Findlater

New Malden History Over By Christmas? (Part 2) by Robin Gill

A letter appeared in the Surrey Comet in September 1914 from Private Joseph William Hankin, a former member of the Church Lads Brigade at Malden and who lived at 16 George Road (aged 20) he had lately joined up with the 3rd Battalion East Surrey Regiment. After three days with the other recruits at the barracks in Kingston, he had travelled by train to Dover, and at each station they were greeted by well wishers and given gifts of fruit and cigarettes. Arriving at Dover they were given cheese, bread, and jam and slept on the floor of the local YMCA gym. Awoken at 5 o’clock they were trained in marching and drill until late in the afternoon. Pte Hankin wrote that although life was tough he was sure “none of the Malden boys would return home if he had the chance”. He urged any Malden boy who hadn’t joined up to do so, or they “will miss the fun,” (Hankin survived the war and lived until 1963)

Blanket coverage With winter around the corner, an appeal came from the War Office for blankets for the troops and Graham Spicer offered the Institute as a base for donations and distribution. The blankets were to measure approximately 50 ins by 90 ins (127cms x 230cms) and should be taken to the building, or picked up from a given address. The blankets would be packed and sent out from the institute.340 were received in the first week and 300 of these were sent to the soldiers at Aldershot, the number rising to 450 by the end of the month. Others were sent as the result of a similar appeal by the council. The boys from Christ Church School donated eleven blankets sent with their good wishes to the troops. Recruitment continued apace in Malden, and leading the way was a veteran from the Crimean campaign (1853-6) George Smith from George Road. George fought with the Royal Marines and proudly wore his two medals, as he marched around the village drumming up support. He did not need to call at 2 Salisbury Road, the home of the Earl family. The late head of the household Frederick had served in the East Surrey s for 12 years, and his five sons had all joined the same regiment at the outbreak of hostilities. By the

middle of September eighty three men had enlisted into the army at the council offices. The names of all these men were to be kept for a local roll of honour. Athletic support As has been mentioned previously, by early September the New Malden Athletes Volunteer Force was in full swing, with over 100 members enrolling in the first two weeks and 150 by the end of the month. Drills were held twice a week and rifle practice at the Raynes Park range on a daily basis. The force also commenced night marches around the district. They made use of the hall at the Congregational Church (URC), for lectures on the use of weapons and Swedish Drill (movements performed slowly and gently with the emphasis on balance and muscle control). Parades were held at the sportsground in Woodside Road on Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays, where the men were taught semaphore and musketry use.

Book samples /sale/signing

Allotments sprouted up all over the district to grow food for the war effort, and the council reached an agreement with the Fitzgeorge Estate to purchase just over 10 acres of land between Dickerage Lane and Mount Pleasant for this purpose. (The majority of this land is now the playing fields of Corpus Christi School). Our dumb friends Animals were also in need of support at this difficult time, and the children of the Band Of Mercy were heavily involved in the making of wither pads for cavalry horses to protect them against sores due to the constant use of saddles. Additionally, with the onset of war, pets were in danger of being neglected as other priorities came to the fore, and these sometimes involved the animals’ disposal. Therefore the shelter in Hampden Road Norbiton was kept very busy.

Was Malden safe? It was not on the coast so could not suffer a naval bombardment, and it was too early in the war to talk about the threat from Zeppelins and Gothas. But what about the townsfolk, were they all they seemed? The town was home to many “enemy alien waiters” and the police were taking “active steps” to curtail any adverse activity. And how about Mr Thomas William Colbeck who had recently moved into a house in The Mount, he had been remanded with others, after a court appearance, for trading with the enemy. History

The Tower of London Poppies by Dr Tracy Borman On a warm and sunny Friday in September, I became one of 8,000 volunteers from across the UK who have been enlisted to plant poppies at the Tower of London. ‘Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red’ is the stunning installation by ceramic artist Paul Cummins, whose team is producing no fewer than 888,246 poppies by hand, each one representing a British military fatality during the First World War. Historic Royal Palaces, the charity that looks after the Tower, as well as Hampton Court Palace, Kew Palace, the Banqueting House in Whitehall, Kensington Palace and Hillsborough Castle, was keen to mark the 100th anniversary of the start of the war with a series of events and exhibitions, of which the poppies is the centerpiece. The installation began on 5 August and will be complete by Armistice Day, 11 November 2014. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, together with Prince Harry, came to see the project on its first day, and each planted a poppy. Since then, the Tower has been encircled by a growing ‘sea of red’. By the time I did my planting stint on 12 September, it was already an aweinspiring sight. Just how much more so it will be by 11 November can only be imagined. In the space of a few short weeks, the poppies have become one of the most iconic landmarks in London, and thousands of tourists flock there every day to see the installation take shape. They also come to the ceremony that is taking place every evening at twilight, during which the names of 180 serving military killed during the First World War are read out in a roll of honour by a Yeoman Warder. This is followed by the ‘Last Post’ played by a single bugler. It is an incredibly moving experience, and I felt very privileged indeed to have had the chance to take part. Volunteers have to assemble the poppies, as well as plant them, which was harder than it sounds! It took a lot longer than I envisaged because each poppy is made to last, so there are several fittings to fix into place. But the care and attention will be worth it because it means that the poppies will not only survive the (increasingly harsh) elements of a British autumn, but will be in a fit enough state by the end of the installation to be boxed up and posted out to

14

the thousands of people across the world who have bought one. The funds raised from the sale of the poppies (which are priced at £25 + p&p) will go to the Royal British Legion and other military charities. They are selling out fast, so you need to act quickly if you would like to get your hands on a little piece of history. There is also still time to get involved in volunteering. Although enough people have come forward to plant the poppies, the task of deinstalling them will begin after 11 November and Historic Royal Palaces are calling for volunteers to help. Even though by the end of my stint, I had only added a fraction of poppies to the total, it meant a great deal to know that I had contributed even in a small way to such a worthwhile and historic project. I would therefore encourage everyone who is able to spare the time to get involved. To find out more, visit: www.hrp.org.uk/TowerofLondon

History

On the hunt for part of a Roman temple

by Susan Baker

Sixty years ago one of the greatest archaeological discoveries in London was made. Churchill was recalled from his weekend at Chequers to discuss its forthcoming destruction. Thousands queued to see it. The police had to be called in to control the crowds. What could have generated such interest? It was the Roman Temple of Mithras and only by good fortune was it discovered. In 1954 a new office block - Bucklesbury House – was being built on a bomb site next to Cannon Street station in the heart of the City of London. Archaeologists were allowed on site for only one month and had to dig amongst the builders. They gradually uncovered part of the ground plan of a building. On the very last day of their dig the magnificent marble head of Mithras (a Roman god) was uncovered indicating that the building was an important Roman temple from about AD240. In theory the excavation should have ended then and anything uncovered destroyed in the building of Bucklesbury House. Building work stopped and after much wrangling it was agreed that the temple could be dismantled and removed to storage. For two weeks before it was packed up the public was allowed to see the remains of the temple. A few hundred were expected but they came in their thousands – 35,000 queued round the block! It is estimated that 400,000 saw it over the two weeks. It was then removed to a builders’ yard in New Malden – Humphreys – you can see the sign in the photograph. There the temple languished until 1960, when it was decided to rebuild the temple about 100 metres from the original location. However it was found that a lot of the stone and pillars had disappeared from the yard. The reconstruction of the temple was something of blotched job. Now it is on the move again. The Bucklesbury House site is being redeveloped again – to become the European Headquarters of Bloomberg. The temple has been dismantled and stored (in a more secure place) ready to be reconstructed (more faithfully) in a public exhibition space within the Bloomberg building in 2017.

Do you remember the yard? Do you know what happened to the missing stones? Do you have any Roman pillars in your garden? The Museum of London Archaeology would be interested in any information. They are also working on an Oral History project about the discovery of the temple. Did you visit the site in 1954? Do you have any photos or mementoes from your or a relative’s visit? Fundraising Poppy Appeal 2014

The end of World War 1 saw the return to civilian life large numbers of physically and mentally injured men and women. Poppies, an important reminder of the war, were sold on the continent to raise funds for ex-servicemen and the idea caught on in Britain. A group of disabled ex-servicemen under the guidance of Major George Howson MC started to make artificial poppies, and the first Poppy Appeal took place in 1921. The war ended in 1918 on November 11th, and this has become the date on which we remember the victims of all conflicts, both civilian and military. Thus the Poppy Appeal as we know it spread from small beginnings into the powerful and successful movement that it is today. All the money raised by the appeal, except for the costs of the appeal itself, goes to help serving and ex-servicemen and women, and their dependants in time of need, through The Royal British Legion’s Benevolent Fund. Indeed the Legion’s Royal Charter commits it irrevocably to this. The collecting period for the 2013 Poppy Appeal is approaching, running this year from October 26th to November 11th, and this year will be organised in

Council matters The borough’s biggest ever public consultation under starter’s orders

If you could change one thing about the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames, what would it be? Kingston Council would like to hear from people who live, work and study in this historic and thriving borough – we want them to tell us what we do well and where we could make improvements. Launching on Friday 17 October, the ‘All in One’ survey is the biggest public consultation ever carried out in the borough. A paper copy of the survey will be sent to every household in the borough, with additional copies available in libraries. Residents will also be able to complete the survey online via the Council’s website at www.kingston.gov.uk/consultations. Leader of the Council, Councillor Kevin Davis, said: “These are challenging times for local government finances; our budget is tight just like those of many households. We have some difficult choices in the years ahead. Therefore it’s more important than ever that we are clear about the priorities of local people. The All

in One survey is an opportunity for residents to tell us what’s important to them. “We are also keen to hear from people who don’t live in the borough but have a close connection to it – perhaps they work or study here. I would encourage those who aren’t residents to complete the survey online via the Council’s website.” The survey should only take about 15 minutes to complete but the results us will help us plan local services for the next three years. As a thank you for their time, everyone who returns a completed survey will be invited to enter into a prize draw with the chance of winning £500 worth of John Lewis vouchers. We also encourage keen social media users to get involved with the conversation on Twitter by tweeting @RBKingston using our campaign hashtags: #OneThingNewMalden. Follow the campaign through our four neighbourhood Facebook pages – links to which, along with information about all our social networks, can be found at www.kingston.gov.uk/ contact. The results will be used to help the Council understand the priorities of local people so that services can be planned accordingly. A series of meetings will take place across the borough in early 2015 to feedback the results.

View from the City Investing in Debt to Invest in Infrastructure by Justin Urquhart Stewart

Are we just Debt junkies? From the levels of personal debt, primarily though our houses, to overly enthusiastic use of credit cards and finally to the usurers of the pay day loan companies, we as a nation have not shown ourselves as being especially well controlled at managing our debts. In fact we seem to go out of our way to seek instant product gratification at the cost of short term debt. This also extends to our leaders, where governments over the centuries have laden us with an increasingly heavy load of national debt. Sometimes this has been caused by global conflagrations, but more often than not by populist policies of petty politicians recklessly and irresponsibly spending our money. Sadly, despite the much vaunted policy of austerity from our coalition government, our debt has not been coming down and in fact has been reaching new record of £1.4 trillion. The deficit, although significantly lower than when the coalition took over, is now levelling out and even showing some concerning signs of rising. There is a question, though, of how you should regard debt. Some can be incurred by day to day expenditure which would directly hit our cashflow and deficit. This would generally be regarded as bad policy and living beyond our means. However there is another type of debt which is longer term investment debt. This is not just current spending but rather investment in “stuff” that will make a positive return for the economy. Seemingly we don’t appear to separate these debt numbers out into different categories in our figures but rather lump them all together into one amorphous blob. However this need for investment is a key area for a recovering economy - as we can direct money where we know we will be likely to be seeing a sensible return, and at the same time see the ripple out effect of such expenditure into the wider economy. This year we will be spending around £28bn on net capital spending which is about 1.5% of our GDP. Now with record low rates you would think that any sensible government would use this as an excellent moment to raise cheap money for longer term investment for longer term returns. But many fear that large government borrowing, even on investment, might destabilise the apparently fragile confidence in our situation. Personally I am not so convinced. Yes, we must close the deficit to live within our means, but that should not preclude the vital necessity of longer term investment in our infrastructure. As any householder knows, failing to replace tiles on the roof now will only mean the higher

24

cost of replacing the entire roof later. However even if our government is reluctant to go down that route, we know we have some of our largest institutions ready to invest in reliable longer term projects. With the likes of the Pru, L&G and Aviva amongst others, these insurance and pension companies have already expressed their interest and even commitment, subject to the projects themselves, to participate. You only have to look at some of the Canadian pension funds who have seemed very keen to find solid and reliable longer term investments. I think though there is another untapped area which could be brought to provide more investment strength here. I have already attended meetings where the opportunity for private investors participating in such infrastructure schemes has been mooted. Most institutional investors regard this as being too complicated and potentially expensive to address. I disagree. In a population where we are all living longer, and where the annuity rules have been relaxed, the need for reliable low cost, steady investments is going to be vital. Private investors obviously already have access to government bonds through the Gilt market and a growing amount of Corporate debt as well. However the opportunity to be able to invest into an infrastructure project or fund could well be attractive. Actually this is not as new as some would think. Such infrastructure funds have been around before but the ability for investors to participate in individual projects has not really been so easily available. This could change if investment projects were packaged not just for the institutions but also for the retail investor to participate in. Despite the bleating from the politicians, I think that they would find that there is no shortage of money to be invested; it’s just that none of them seem to have seriously considered how best such support could be channelled through to where it is needed. Of course the financing is just one side; it is also the preparation of the infrastructure project that is also so crucial. The planning world in the UK seems to be slothlike in its movements, and there comes a stage where such tortuous inaction becomes both economically and socially damaging. From housing, to transport and energy production and delivery, we need some leadership to overcome the “nimbys’” and get on with this strategically necessary investment. Justin Urquhart Stewart is one of the most recognisable and trusted market commentators on television, radio and in the press. Originally trained as a lawyer he has observed the retail market industry for 20 years whilst at Barclays Stockbrokers and developed a unique understanding of the market’s roles and benefits for the private investor

Malden Centre Orchestra! by Sue Wilson

Do you play a Musical Instrument? Come and join the Malden Centre Orchestra! On Thursday mornings, at the Malden Centre, the pleasant sound of classical music can be heard drifting out from the Studio. Woodwind, Strings, Brass & Percussion instruments combine to create this musical masterpiece. Anyone who plays a music instrument to a competent level can join the Orchestra. Conductor David Benke says “We are a friendly and diverse group of musicians who enjoy playing a variety of musical scores. We welcome all instruments, but would particularly like to hear from anyone who plays violin, viola or cello.” David chooses the musical scores for the sessions in conjunction with the Orchestra members and this has recently included works by Beethoven, Richard Rogers, Strauss, Percy Fletcher and many more. In November the group gets busy practicing some

traditional carols for the annual Christmas Concert. This year the concert takes place on Thursday 11th December at the Malden Centre from 11.00am-12.00noon when the Orchestra will be joined by Singing Tutor Celia and her Choral Singers. Tickets are FREE and there is always a collection in aid of The Salvation Army. Come along, sing some carols and enjoy complimentary mince pies and refreshments. It’s a lovely event that really gets everyone in the festive spirit. You can get your ticket from the Malden Centre Reception. “The Orchestra is an important part of our Adult Education Programme.” says Courses Manager Sue Wilson, “We have a successful Music Department comprising the Orchestra, Guitar Lessons, Singing classes and Workshops!” Pick up one of our brochures for more information or email suewilson@pfpleisure. org. If you would like to join our Orchestra please contact David on 02087868517.

Books

Socks and Stuff by Lynne Mattick

All over the country, magazines and shop windows have been a riot of pinks as part of the effort to raise awareness of breast cancer. The Village Voice is no exception to this and I would like to share a little of my own experience. My name is Lynne Mattick and I have had breast cancer – twice! I was born and brought up in New Malden and attended local schools – Bretby House and Clarence Avenue County Primary School (later to become Coombe Hill) and later Tiffin Girls’ School. I never moved very far from the area although I did move to Norbiton when I was eleven and spent the first years of my married life in Motspur Park. However, twenty years ago, I moved back into New Malden and now live in a road that runs parallel to the one where I spent the first years of my life. From the age of 5, I had two dreams. One was to become a teacher and the other was to be a writer. My family always said I was bossy enough to be a teacher and the box full of notebooks containing hand written stories and poems is evidence of my desire to write. I spent four years in Warrington, training to be a French teacher and then moved to France for a year to ensure that I was fluent in the language I wished to teach. When I returned to England, I took up a post in a Merton Middle school where I soon became Head of the French department. At that time, I was also teaching Adult Education lessons in French conversation in New Malden and it was there that I met my husband. After eight years in Merton, I left to have my first baby and settled into life as a stay-at-home mum. However, all through my twenties, for some reason, I had been consumed by fear that I would develop breast cancer and ensured that I carried out regular self-examination. So it came as no surprise when I found a small lump in my left breast. I had to fight long and hard to get the doctors to recognize that this might be cancer but my tenacity bore fruit when they finally agreed to operate to remove the lump and then realized that I had been right all along. I had another operation to remove some lymph nodes for checking and then six weeks of radiotherapy. My daughter was not quite two years old and during that six week period and on into the next two months, she managed to develop measles, followed swiftly by chicken pox, then German measles and finally mumps! In spite of gloomy predictions that I would be unable

34

to have any more children, my second daughter was born a few weeks before my 40th birthday. A few years later, I returned to teaching but changed direction and I now teach in a New Malden infant school. For the last twenty four years I have also been a leader of a Brownie pack attached to Christ Church and am currently on my second term as New Malden District Commissioner for Girlguiding. Christ Church has been a big part of my life as I was baptized and married there, both my daughters were baptized there and I have been an active member of CCNM for the past thirty one years. I continued to have regular checkups and mammograms but it was an awareness and understanding of my own body that alerted me to the fact that I had another problem. Amazingly, yet again, I had to fight to get my concerns recognized but I persevered and nineteen years after my first operation, I found myself in hospital once more, this time for a mastectomy. On both occasions, the lump was small and I did not need chemotherapy but I began to wonder how very different life might have been had I not known my own body so well. Bearing this in mind, I set about realizing my second dream and so I began to write an account of my second diagnosis and treatment in the hopes that it would help other women to understand the experience a little more. I finally published my book this year and it has already helped many women as they face up to breast cancer and it has also enabled those who support them to understand more of what they might be going through. ‘Socks and Stuff’ is a humorous account of my own experience with breast cancer but I hope that it might encourage other women to realize the importance of being breast aware and have the courage and confidence to persist if their concerns are not recognized and not to let fear paralyse them. More and more women and men are surviving breast cancer now as a result of research and so I am donating 10% of my royalties to Cancer Research UK. Five years ago, I was finally discharged from the system after twenty four years of annual check-ups. This was a surprisingly frightening moment but I continue to be self-aware and to encourage everyone else to do the same. I am convinced that it saved my life and I urge you spread the word. The book may be funny but the message is serious – be breast aware! ‘Socks and Stuff ‘is available on Amazon in both paperback and on Kindle

A Year in the life of the New Malden Farmers’ Market @ The Fountain Pub Car park WOW, how time has flown! A year since the popular market moved to the Fountain Pub car park it has had over 4,000 visitors. In that time the community market run by local volunteers has already raised over £2,000 to be donated to local charities and community organisations. It is always looking for new high quality stalls with a difference especially to increase its range of arts and crafts stalls to add to its range of yummy food on offer either to eat or take away. A popular initiative has been the free demo slot for local businesses and start-ups to showcase their skills and advertise

their services. Locals know that it’s always worth a visit for something new and smashing special offers. WHAT’S NEXT? The next market is on Saturday 1st November and preparations are well under way for a bumper Christmas market on 13th December, with just a few pitches left. Art Group brings Local Colour to Surbiton A local amateur art group who, for reasons lost in the mists of time, call themselves the Artful Dodgers have their first full exhibition at The CornerHouse, Surbiton this December.

The group came about when its founder members met several years ago at an inspirational art class held on alternate Saturdays at the Malden Centre. During the summer term the tutor encouraged the class out of the studio and into the great outdoors. It was so successful that members of the group started going out together on other Saturdays and during the summer break. Now the group has an all-year programme of Saturday morning locations en plein air (weather permitting, otherwise in a pub with a view!) and an expanding membership of about 20. The exhibition runs from 1 December until 4 January whenever the centre is open, (see website for details www.thecornerhouse.org) The Gala opening is on Tuesday 2 December from 7-9pm at Cornerhouse 116 Douglas Rd KT6 7SB. Around 60 paintings in various media will be on show and on sale for that innovative Christmas present. For more information about the event and the Artful Dodgers email ArtfulDodgersArt@gmail.com

Italian Lamb Shanks Serves 4 Ready in 2 ½ hours

Lamb shanks are perfect for long slow cooking as they become meltingly tender and the meat just falls off the bone. Here they are braised with all the flavours of Italy – red wine, smoked cured bacon and tomatoes. Serve with creamy mash or boiled ribbon pasta such as tagliatelle or pappardelle. 4 small lamb shanks 2 tbsp olive oil 350g shallots, peeled 2 garlic cloves, peeled and chopped 150g cubed pancetta (Italian dry cured bacon) 300ml red wine 400g can chopped tomatoes 2 tbsp sun-dried tomato puree 2 sprigs fresh rosemary, plus extra sprigs to garnish 5ml (1tsp) sugar Creamy mashed potato, to serve Preheat the oven to 170°C/150°C fan/gas 3. Season the lamb shanks with freshly ground black pepper. Heat the oil in a frying pan and brown the lamb shanks over a high heat for 4-5 minutes, turning frequently. Transfer to a shallow casserole dish. Add the shallots, garlic and pancetta to the frying pan and cook over a medium heat for 6-7 minutes until lightly browned. Pour in the red wine and bring to the boil. Add the tomatoes, sun-dried tomato puree, rosemary sprigs and sugar and pour over the lamb.

Cover the casserole and cook in the preheated oven for about 2 hours, or until the lamb shanks are very tender and the sauce has thickened slightly. Adjust the seasoning to taste and serve with creamy mashed potato and garnished with fresh rosemary. Tip Why not double up the quantities and freeze away half for another day? Allow to cool completely then transfer to a freezer-proof container. Freeze for up to 2 months. Defrost thoroughly then reheat gently on the hob for 20-25 minutes until piping hot.

Thomas Cromwell: Villain or Hero? by Stephen Kuhrt

Dr Tracy Borman speaking on her book: Thomas Cromwell: The Untold Story of Henry VIII’s most Faithful Servant at Christ Church, New Malden Thursday 4th December 8.00 pm When it comes understanding characters from the past, most of us prefer very clear distinctions to be drawn between those who were good and those who were evil. The immensely popular Tudor period is often interpreted in this manner with people frequently showing remarkable commitment to defending their take on its ‘goodies’ and ‘baddies’. For a long time, Thomas Cromwell, chief minister of Henry VIII throughout most of the 1530s, has firmly existed within the latter category. Within both Robert Bolt’s play A Man for All Seasons and the numerous films made of Henry’s reign, Cromwell is frequently portrayed as the dastardly and cynical counterpart

56

to the saintly Thomas More. And there is certainly plenty of ammunition here: Cromwell’s leading role in the King’s divorce from Catherine of Aragon, the subsequent Dissolution of the Monasteries, and the machinations involved in the downfall of Henry VIII’s second wife, Anne Boleyn. During the last few years, however, this perspective has been dramatically challenged through the novels of Hilary Mantel. Within the amazingly successful Wolf Hall and then its sequel Bring Up the Bodies, Mantel presents a strikingly different picture, with Thomas Cromwell presented much more sympathetically. The ruthless schemer is replaced by a man who is earnest and warm, with devotion to his family, a good sense of humour and sincerity of religious conviction among his primary characteristics. Anticipated by James Frain’s sensitive portrayal of Cromwell in TV’s The Tudors, Mantel’s novels have brought about a remarkable rehabilitation with one of history’s great villains now perceived in a much more favourable light. But Mantel’s books are novels and given the license this genre provides for imaginative reconstruction, Wolf Hall and Bring Up the Bodies have opened up the issues surrounding the interpretation of Thomas Cromwell for further

investigation rather than providing their definitive resolution. I n her recently published book Thomas Cromwell: The Untold Story of Henry VIII’s most Faithful Servant, Dr Tracy Borman has responded to this challenge. Resident of New Malden and a member of Christ Church, Tracy has examined the extensive sources which exist for Cromwell’s life, notably the minister’s voluminous correspondence, to produce an outstanding biography of this complex and intriguing man. Uncovering a great deal of fresh evidence, Tracy provides a compelling narrative of the foundational events of Cromwell’s early life, the abilities that brought him so swiftly into power, the masterly control that he operated as Henry’s minister and the mistakes and court rivalries that led to his dramatic fall from power and execution in 1540. For fans of the Tudor period, the results of this are fascinating as events such as the Dissolution of the Monasteries, the demise of Anne Boleyn, the Anne of Cleves fiasco and the general nature of Henry VIII’s court come to life as never before. Tracy’s book has already met with widespread acclaim and a tour during which she has spoken at some twenty five venues. This tour will conclude on

Thursday 4th December when she gives her final talk on Thomas Cromwell this year at Christ Church, New Malden. Admission will be free but with a retiring collection for the campaign against Human Trafficking. Do come along to hear Tracy speak and make up your own mind on whether Thomas Cromwell was a villain, a hero or something in between! Stephen Kuhrt is Vicar of Christ Church, New Malden

As people live longer, have longer careers and face different opportunities and challenges in later life, the long-standing organisation is adapting to meet the future. It will continue to provide the same popular, personalised services in the same locations but now operate under this new name. In 2016 the organisation will celebrate 70 years since it began as Malden & Coombe Older People’s Welfare Association in 1946. Since then it has always evolved to stay relevant and this new name is the next stage in its evolution. ‘With the changing nature of ageing, now is the time to look to the future,’ says CEO Shane Brennan. There are three main reasons for this change: Society has changed exercise and healthy lifestyle courses and more. The name ‘Age Concern’ was developed over 40 Please see Staywell’s website or contact them directly: years ago to address the needs of a very different www.staywellservices.org.uk generation. The name is not as relevant as it once was 020 8942 8256 hello@staywellservices.org.uk and an increasing number of people over 60 simply do not identify with it. Clearly independent KING GEORGE FIELD Although there is no longer a national body called ‘Age INDOOR BOWLS CLUB Concern’, sometimes it is assumed the organisation is part of Age UK. They are in fact totally independent, and always have been. Learn to Bowl Describing what they do Free Coaching The old name no longer describes everything they do. ‘Our role is to provide services that support people’s All Ages & needs today,’ says Shane, ‘particularly to help them Abilities Welcome live for longer in their own homes. In the future our services will expand and adapt to meet these needs, so Bar • Restaurant the time is right for change.’ This decision hasn’t been reached lightly or in a rush. Social Events Staywell involved its users, volunteers, supporters, Large Car Park partners and staff as well as the wider community in the decision. But why ‘Staywell’? FUNCTION ROOM FOR ALL ‘It is what we do,’ says Shane, ‘our services help people OCCASIONS stay well. We also want to continue representing the changing needs and identity of older people. This new Jubilee Way, Chessington name better reflects who we are and what people KT9 1TR want, which is important in a period where many consider themselves not to be ‘old’ – and quite rightly Tel: 020 8397 7025 so.’ www.kgfindoorbowlsclub.co.uk The team at Staywell welcomes any questions or feedback about the new name, or about the range of services it provides, including Advice & Information, Help@Home, two popular day centres, Fit as a Fiddle 58 Please remember to mention the Village Voice when you speak to our advertisers

A Malden Man It’s Game On, For A New Town Square! by Raj Randhawa

The Cocks Crescent site is up for grabs, and it’s high time our opinions are heard and acted on. Following on from my previous piece ‘A New Town Square For New Malden’
(June issue) the vacant Cocks Crescent site has become a major local talking point. Cocks Crescent represents a once in a lifetime opportunity to create something special for New Malden, which will benefit the whole community. If the site’s development is handled with one eye firmly on what’s best for the local community, it could trigger a whole new direction in the regeneration of New Malden.

The images in this article show a visual representation of how a new town square might look and have brought the proposal to life, as well as gaining local support for the scheme. The Council has produced draft design guidelines for the Cocks Crescent site, but luckily for us, the local planning subcommittee has rejected the plans. This temporary reprieve is due in large part to the New Malden Residents Association, which has been fighting hard on our behalf. Recently they’ve made great progress; gaining support from councilors like Terry Paton and our local MP Ed Davey, and getting the current plans shelved, which have resulted in a new approach to the site, to include a comprehensive public consultation. We’re very lucky to have the Residents Association keeping an eye on local planning proposals by ensuring developers have someone to answer to.

ensure guarantees (as part of any proposal), for our local facilities like the Malden Centre. Keep an eye on the website (above) for details of the public consultation. Also check out the (June) Village Voice article entitled ’A New Town Square For New Malden’ (Page 58)
about the site’s potential and what it could mean for New Malden. I’ll leave you with a quote from British poet Thomas Hood (1799-1845), one that I hope will spark us in to action: ‘When was ever honey made with one bee in a hive’. Confused? Ok, just watch Rocky I and come out fightin’. Having clawed back some say in what happens to the site, and now with local politicians onside, this is a vital time for our community. If we’re to get what we want from the Cocks Crescent site, it’s the time for residents to take interest and get involved. Please check the New Malden Residents Association website at: www.newmaldenresidents.org.uk for updates on the latest and if you are able to, join up and get involved. We want to get as many people to voice their opinions and make sure they are heard. We want to win approval for a progressive regeneration of the site, which will benefit the whole community and

The Maldens And Coombe Heritage Society The Lloyd Award

In February this year the Society decided to instigate an award for the secondary schools in our area, and for the pupils they nominated as showing an excellence in the subject of history (not necessarily local history). This was to be called the Lloyd Shield in memory of two of our founding members Malcolm and Gwenda Lloyd who had unfortunately passed away during the past year. The pupil would be asked to submit an example of their work, which would be judged by members of the Society, and a small committee was set up to write to the schools (Coombe Boys and Girls, Richard Challoner, Holy Cross and Marymount). This would be a way of encouraging the local schools to take an interest in their local heritage. The Society received entries of a high standard from two of the schools, and after deliberation by the judges who were members of the Society, and had many published history books to their name, it was decided that the award should go to Trigg Sharp from Richard Challoner School with his essay entitled “Why was the war on the Western Front so dreadful

for British soldiers?” In the judges' opinion he wrote clearly and with understanding about the conditions for the soldier on the Western Front with a good grasp of technical detail. The two runners up were both from Holy Cross: Annabel D'Monte and Sinead Conway-Belcher. The winner received the award in the form of an engraved shield together with a book token for £20, whilst the runners-up each received a book token to the value of £10. The shield will be held at the school for a year when it will be competed for again. On September 24th in front of a packed assembly at the school, our Vice Chairman Maureen Wilkins had the pleasure of presenting Trigg with his prize. Left to Right: Robin Gill (Secretary), Trigg Sharp, Maureen Wilkins (Vice Chairman) and Michael Coll (Subject Leader of History at the school)
