Dear Readers

So my first born has entered the world of secondary education and second only has two year left at Primary. Yikes! How quickly did that time pass. One big difference between between little school and big is the need to manage a timetable. Each day starts we reference to the timetable which largely results in rushing around getting the various bits of equipment together. Week three and I’ve already had to intercept her twice en route to hand over forgotten items – how lucky is she that I’ve been in a position to do that. By the time you read this we’ll be into week 4 of the ‘autumn’ term and half term won’t seem that far off. Outside the sun is shining and temperatures are still high (for the time of year!) although I am now in socks and shoes. If the papers are to believed then October could continue to be, dare I say, warm? I do hope so but bear in mind that off the strength of a newspaper article telling us last year was going to be the coldest winter since I can’t remember when, prompting me to dash out to buy a pair of snow boots that, beyond trying on to make sure they fit, I never wore! So I am not going to hold my breath for an Indian October. September we had fundraising coffee and cake events for McMillan and November the focus will be on Movember - the leading global organisation committed to changing the face of men’s health. October, however, is breast cancer awareness month. Local writer (and my adopted auntie), Ruth Jemmett has movingly shared her experience of this awful disease with us in this edition. We hope that this may encourage other ladies to get themselves checked. In the lead up to Christmas remember that we’re here to promote your local Christmas Fairs and Shopping Events – just email the details – and any other events you’re organising. Anyway, as always, a big thank you to everyone who has contributed and advertised this month. If you’re a local business wanting to reach out to your local community then why not call for a chat about affordable advertising in your local community magazine. Remember, we deliver to most homes every second month so if you’re not able to pick up a magazine on the months it’s not delivered to you, you can read it on your smart phone/tablet or PC. Finally… don’t forget that the clocks go back at the end of this month (26th October). Until next month, best wishes

New Malden History Over by Christmas? by Robin Gill

It may surprise some people to learn that this well used phrase was never officially said about the war during 1914. Admittedly, a lot of men thought it would be, and this encouraged them to volunteer to “do their bit” before it was too late. How wrong they were. The phrase has come into common usage, and has been applied to practically every other lengthy war since, where Britain has been involved. Kaiser Wilhelm is recorded as telling his troops that they would be home “before the leaves fall” (autumn), but that was when he thought they were only fighting the French. Both Generals Kitchener, and Haig, and politicians like Lloyd-George thought it would be a long campaign, and while their military tactics might be questionable, they were right about the duration.

6

Appeals and action Britain declared war on Germany on Tuesday 4th August, following Germany’s rejection that Belgium’s neutrality would be respected. In Malden on the Sunday after the declaration, mention of the war was made in the sermons in all of the churches in the district with prayers of intercession between the warring factions. Queen Mary appealed that all members of her newly formed Needlework Guild would set about organising sewing parties to make clothes for the sick and injured from the war. In Malden the group got together between 11am and 5pm in the Congregational (now URC) hall and an appeal was issued for sewing machines. Another party was organised by Mrs Jane Wight of Ormiston in Lynton Road, who appealed for donations of grey or dark coloured material. Mrs Florence Jones the wife of the curate also formed a group at Christ Church. New Malden soon lost several of their postmen,

as they were called up for service, and no less valuable were the tradesmen’s horses also required for the war effort, including those from the council. This in turn affected services such as refuse collection and residents were asked to dispose of rubbish by burying it. Within 14 days of the outbreak of war more than thirty local residents had applied to be “special constables” for service “in the protection of life, property, and the food supply, and against lawlessness, and the maintenance of public services”. In effect their main job was the protection of the water mains. Even the smallest amount of help was appreciated. Mr and Mrs Smith of Kings Avenue offered to take children to Beverley Park for mission services involving singing, games and walks. Appreciated by parents and children alike,

this helped to give the adults time alone to make important decisions at a difficult time. Council’s response The council held a meeting on 18th August in which they discussed ways of providing relief to families in the area affected by the war, and the setting up of an emergency committee to deal with such matters. It was felt that the wives and families of servicemen would be helped by the Soldiers and Sailors Families Association, and it was for other eventualities that the relief would provide for. They could not have the people of Malden and Coombe losing their self respect and independence as a result of the war. A public meeting was called for and Mr Graham Spicer offered the newly refurbished institute as the venue and the meeting was scheduled for 20th August at 8 o’clock.

The hall was packed for the general meeting, and the leader of the council (Albert Mursell) and his fellow councillors were cheered onto the rostrum (something they were unaccustomed to). Mr Mursell told the audience they must be prepared for the worst, and explained about the setting up of the emergency committee to provide local relief. Funds would also be collected for SSFA, and the Red Cross. Mr Spicer stated that “nobody could foretell what the coming year or years might have in store for them, but they were prepared to face the future bravely, and bear any sacrifice to uphold the honour of England”. The plans were approved unanimously, and the meeting ended with the playing of the National Anthem and cheers for the King.

The first meeting of the Maldens and Coombe Emergency and Recruiting Committee was held on 2nd September in the Council Offices (now Waitrose) with Admiral Sir Cyprian Bridge in the chair. Sir Cyprian, who lived at Coombe Pines on Kingston Hill, had been elected chairman after a distinguished naval career. He had joined his first ship in 1853, and seen action in India, Burma, Australia, South America, Panama, Syria, China, and Japan. He admitted that he knew nothing about relief work, but was very keen on recruitment. There was to be a mass recruitment rally in Beverley Park at 5.30pm on 5th September, it was hoped to recruit 200 local men to form two companies in the East Surrey Regiment. There was also a request that all sporting clubs in the district postpone their fixtures on the same day to encourage recruitment.

Resister recruitment and rally It was also announced by the committee that a register would be kept of all local men at the front and their progress throughout the war. These men would be found employment when hostilities ceased and would be included on a roll of honour. £448 had been raised for local relief. The recruiting depot in at the council offices in New Malden continued to receive men with nearly 50 enrolling each week from the district, mostly joining the East Surrey regiment. These included over 30 who were members of the bible class run by Mr Spicer. Some of the earliest enlistments were Alfred Henry Prismall mentioned in Graeme Hodge’s article last month, and Charles Percy Hughes mentioned in May’s Village Voice. But inevitably some of these early

recruits would not survive the war, or at least escape injury. Men who were unable for whatever reason to join up, were encouraged to join the Athletes Volunteer Force, originally set up for those from sporting clubs who were active and physically fit, but without the knowledge to assist in the defence of the country should the need arise. More or less, a First World War equivalent of the Home Guard, they would be trained in drill, route marches, and how to use a rifle. The New Malden Volunteer Force was one of the earliest to be formed, under the command of Charles Kirk Photographer and one of Malden’s first firemen, later fire chief. The mass rally in Beverley Park took place as

come forward and do their part. He wanted the men from Malden and Coombe to serve together, and assured them that their families would be well looked after while they were away serving their country. “They would be stemming the torrent of ruthless barbarism that was sweeping over Europe”. Any man from Malden coming forward would have his name inscribed on a roll of honour to be kept forever. The High Sherriff stated that it was his duty to call upon every man of military age (19-35), or 45 if he had been in the forces previously. The men would sign up for three years or the duration of the war (whichever was longer). The government were asking for ½ million recruits, but volunteers must come quickly as training was required before they could go to the front. They had assurances from most employers that their jobs would be safe when they came home. No man was too good for the army, and should respond to the call. The union flag was then raised and men were invited to come forward and give their names. About  thirty did so including four from the fire

brigade all loudly cheered. These men were inspected and then marched off to the Council Offices to join up. The singing of the National Anthem followed by three cheers for the King ended the rally. It should be remembered that all these events took place within a month of war being declared. Whether it was patriotism, or jingoism in some eyes, that spurred Britain on, they were certainly in a state of readiness, or as much as they could be, if anybody could be ready for all out war. Three Easy Ways to Save Money This Winter by Ann Haldon

Fuel bills are a major worry for all of us in winter. Prices go up but the need to stay warm remains, and it’s not just heating the house that’s the problem. Skyrocketing costs of petrol and food drain your finances on a weekly basis, but there is a little cheer on the horizon. Below are three ways to help you make ends meet this winter. All are easy to implement - they just take a little thought and planning, so why not start now before the bad winter weather strikes. Reduce energy consumption According to the Energy Saving Trust, savings of around £300 a year can be made using cavity wall and loft insulation in an average semi-detached house. At the time of writing, British Gas offers free or subsidised loft and cavity wall insulation to eligible homeowners on mainland Britain. This is part of the government’s ‘green’ initiative, with each type of insulation generally taking less than a day to install. Even small measures make a big difference though, the result being a warmer home and reduced bills. Draught excluders It’s surprising how much heat is lost through small gaps under doors and around windows – not something you’d always notice day to day. All these suggestions add up to a much warmer home without costing the earth. • Self-adhesive foam strips around window frames • Letterbox and keyhole covers • Home-made draught excluders for the bottom of doors • Heavy curtains for the front and back doors • Secondary glazing for windows that aren’t already double-glazed • Large pieces of cardboard wrapped in foil placed behind radiators to reflect heat back into the room • Sealant for underneath skirting boards • Chimney or fireplace draught excluders Energy monitors These monitors let you know how much energy each appliance consumes. Most people quickly change their habits once they see the spikes in energy usage recorded by the monitor. Lighting This is one of the easiest areas in which to reduce consumption. Energy-saving light bulbs, external light sensors, and switching off lights when not in use all help to keep down costs. Appliances Freezers work more efficiently when full, as do ovens. Not only that, but you’ll save money buying and cooking

12

food in bulk. Kettles are notorious for high energy consumption. Make sure yours is in optimum condition with regular descaling, or buy an eco kettle with two chambers. One reservoir holds the water, the other is used to measure and boil exactly how much you need. An interesting statistic from the Energy Saving Trust reveals that desktop PCs use 85% more energy in a year than laptops. Switching off any device rather than leaving it on stand-by will reduce electricity bills, but make sure to unplug them at the wall as well. This also applies to microwaves and cookers. Not many people think of this but it takes money to run that digital clock – use a battery-powered wall clock instead. Halve grocery bills A little planning goes a long way when it comes to shopping. Pre-prepared menus and shopping lists are easy ways to reduce waste as well as save money. The ‘Love Food Hate Waste’ website has some useful tips in this respect, and offers advice for saving money on food. The main message is buy and cook in bulk. Cooking becomes less of a chore when you can just grab a homecooked meal out of the freezer several nights a week. It doesn’t have to be anything complicated. A large pan of chilli, Bolognese sauce, or a casserole is easy to make and you’ll be done and dusted in half an hour. Late Sunday afternoon shopping trips are a revelation, when incredible deals can be found in the ‘reduced’ aisle if you time it right. This alone saves a huge amount of money over the course of a year. Cooking from scratch, making your own bread, home brew and wine all save money, and if results are good you can always give away your goodies as Christmas presents. Switch suppliers If you’ve never switched gas and electricity suppliers before, you could be in for a pleasant surprise. The biggest savings of around 5%-10% can be made when you manage your own account online and pay by direct debit. Suppliers like their customers to pay by direct debit as there’s less likelihood of default. It keeps their credit control costs down, and they earn interest on any overpayments you make during the summer months. To make sure you get the best deal: • Always read your own meter – don’t rely on an estimate from your provider • Don’t assume that dual fuel is always the cheapest way to buy • Changing to online bills could save you up to 10% • Use a price comparison website to find the best deals • Make sure you get a refund for any overpayments • Avoid pre-payment meters – the choice of tariffs available is very limited Saving money is often about changing your habits. Things like unplugging appliances and turning off lights are simple to do, and can save you hundreds of pounds over the course of a year.

Ruth Jemmett Writes I am the one in eight

Ruth Jemmett’s Personal Journey Through Breast Cancer

would receive excellent treatment for my condition. I decided not to tell people about the cancer immediately. After all, it seemed a bit mean to depress people so near to the festive season. Also, I needed time to get my head around things. I thought the best thing to do was to get treatment going, and then confide the news to close friends until the picture became clearer. I am very much a ‘glass half full’ person, and I decided that this cancer thing wasn’t going to dominate my life. I went through Christmas like a robot. In the midst of tinsel I was continually asking myself “will I die soon?”. As the new year rang in I asked myself if I would see ANY more years. Just when I thought things couldn’t get any worse I caught a horrendous bout of ‘flu from someone at a festive party! Throughout January I literally dragged myself from my sick-bed to attend various investigations at Kingston Hospital such as a CT Scan, an MRI scan, a Bone Scan (which

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. In this country nearly 50,000 women are diagnosed annually with breast cancer - one in eight of us. Over the past few years, I, like many other people, have glanced at reminders of this October event in the media, and have then carried on with my life. In November of last year my attitude changed completely. During the summer of 2013 I had been conscious of the fact that my left breast looked and felt a little different. When I was younger I had suffered from benign cysts in that breast, and so I stuck my head in the sand, and convinced myself that there was nothing to worry about. Then in November 2013 I got a reminder for my regular three-yearly mammogram screening. As I entered the Mobile Mammogram Unit in Epsom, reality hit me. What if it WASN’T ‘just another cyst’? I could tell by the radiographer’s face that all wasn’t well, and my heart sank as she told me that The Jarvis Breast Assessment Centre in Guildford would shortly be in touch with me to investigate things further. A few days later I arrived at The Jarvis Centre, where I underwent two core biopsies of the breast and fine needle biopsies of the glands under my left arm, plus an ultrasound. The doctor and nurse who did the procedure couldn’t have been kinder, but I knew that a difficult journey lay ahead. All of a sudden my life seemed like a bad dream. The days dragged until I returned to the centre a week or so later to receive my results. The doctor sensitively broke the news to me that “what we are looking at is an extensive and serious cancer of the left breast”. Those words will stay with me forever. I had become ’the one in eight’ …. I found out that the cancer had made my breast attach itself to my chest wall, and had also travelled to the base of my spine. The day I received the devastating news (a Friday 13th!) it coincided with a dinner/dance I had helped to organise. I had the choice of going home to feel sorry for myself or attending the dance. I chose the latter. After all, I figured - “Make hay while the sun shines. There could be cloudy days ahead …” I was told that I would be referred to the Royal Marsden’s Sir William Rous Unit at Kingston Hospital, where, I was assured, I 18 Please remember to mention the Village Voice when you speak to our advertisers

made me temporarily radioactive!) and Ultrasound scans - all with dreadful ’flu, which included a roaring temperature and a hacking cough! I also attended appointments with various medics. A kindly surgeon told me that on paper I was ‘the last person who should get cancer, as you don’t drink or smoke, do a lot of exercise, am a healthy weight, and eat all the right things.” He said that perhaps the fact that I had cared for my disabled son for nearly thirty-nine years, and then had the shock of losing him in 2011, could have thrown my metabolism into freefall. I couldn’t help but agree. The weeks dragged on - as did my ‘flu. Life couldn’t get any worse, could it? That was when my husband John had his heart attack …… As I don’t drive I had to rely on the kindness of neighbours and friends to ferry me from Worcester Park to Hammersmith Hospital where my husband had undergone an emergency stent procedure. Happily he was home within a few days, and it was then that we discovered the wonders of internet supermarket shopping, as neither of us were fit enough could get out of the house! As my treatment progressed the word ‘cancer’ lost its terror for me. I began to live with it, and had - and have - no intention of dying from it. I learnt that my own particular cancer thrives on oestrogen - of which I had too much - despite being in my sixty-eighth year! I take a daily hormone inhibitor tablet which starves my cancer of what it needs to survive. I also take two daily calcium tablets to strengthen my bones. I attend the wonderful Chemotherapy Unit at Kingston Hospital on a monthly basis, where I receive an infusion into my arm of a Bisphosphonate called Zometa, which deals with my bone cancer. At the time of the infusion I have a blood test that tests my tumour markers, my white blood cell count, and my body salts. I also have a nose swab to make sure that I don’t have M.R.S.A. The Chemo Ward is bright and cheerful, with wonderful supportive staff. You see more laughter than tears there, I can assure you! My procedure takes no re more than twenty-five minutes, and is virtually painless. The chairs that we patients sit in are big, squidgy and comfortable, and I wouldn’t mind having one at home! I have an incredibly supportive network of friends who take turns to ferry me to the hospital, and at this moment, I couldn’t love them more! Every three months I see a lovely lady Oncologist, who is incredibly positive and encouraging. Apparently the medication I am on is slowly but surely shrinking what cancers I have, and so far no more new ones have appeared. Eleven months ago I was cursing myself for not having taken my body’s warning signs seriously, and was sure that I would be looking at a mastectomy or certain death. Today I am happy to report that thanks to the magnificent treatment I have received from The

Royal Marsden’s Unit at Kingston Hospital, I lead a full life (and have gained half a stone - time for new clothes I think!), and my ‘naughty’ boob is looking better by the day. In the coming new year a course of radiotherapy is planned, but I am positive about undergoing it, as it’s all in a good cause. If any woman reading this is concerned that she has breast cancer, I would say: Don’t be afraid. Make an appointment to get it sorted out immediately. Remember that the bulk of breast problems AREN’T breast cancer. If your worst fears are confirmed, I would say that, going by my own experience, no part of the tests or treatment are anything to be frightened of. My cancer was found at Stage 2, but even people at Stage 3 can go into remission, so don’t let fear spoil what could be a long and healthy life. I am a realist, and know that cancer is unpredictable, but I am a great believer in positive thought. I talk to the cancer on a daily basis and tell it to get lost! So far so good! I have every intention of sharing my view of local and national life with you for a long time to come. Ruth Jemmett is a Member of The Society of Authors

Wild Woods www.lunchbowl.org Adventurers aged 3 and up are very welcome and teams can be any size, as long there is sufficient adult supervision to assist and supervise them. This will probably be age dependent, with younger children needing more help and older ones just needing someone to walk alongside. Its a wonderful family afternoon, (invite the grandparents too) for a great walk with added adventure! We look forward to welcoming you at the Windmill, Wimbledon Common on the 11th. At 2.30pm on Saturday 11th October young adventurers will be descending on Wimbledon Common for the 5th annual Wild Woods in aid of the Lunchbowl Network. This adventurous event sees platoons of kids and their leader set off on a trail around the common, following clues and using a compass to navigate their way to each station where a ‘soldier’will introduce them to a skill or activity such as poncho shelter building, log pulling and rope climbs . Ever eagle-eyed and alert, the mini soldiers also have to look out for two ‘spies’ in the woods who will deliver them a special coded message.... Sound intriguing? why not come along, don the cammo paint available and head off into the woods... after your adventure you will be rewarded with a hot dog and drink as part of your ticket price, incredibly great value at only £6 per person. Each ticket will feed 18 orphans and vulnerable children living in terrible conditions in Kibera Slum, Nairobi,Kenya. Doughnuts and other goodies will also be on sale. The amazing team at Barclays Wimbledon will also be along and will be match-funding the event. 20

Education

Malden Manor residents needed to help improve their area Kingston Council would like as many people from Malden Manor as possible to get involved in making positive changes in the area. The Malden Manor Community project sees Kingston Council working with local residents of the Malden Manor area – including Sheephouse Way and South Lane – to improve their quality of life. The Council worked with Kingston University earlier this year to undertake the research stage of the project, which gave a thorough understanding of how the local community feel about the area and what they would like to improve. The research has now finished and the report can be downloaded from the Council website. Key themes that emerged were caring for the environment, getting by financially, local services and facilities, safety and security, and community.

The Council now need the help of local residents once more as they work to establish a Community Steering Group. The Community Steering Group is to be a group of local people who live, work and have strong links with the Malden Manor area, and who are interested in helping to develop the project action plan, while taking action and influencing decision-making at a local level. Meetings will be organised around residents’ availability and there will also be the possibility for sharing ideas online for people unable to attend meetings. For further information and if you would like to be involved in developing the Community Steering Group and possibly become a member, please register your interest by emailing gemma.gallant@kingston.gov. uk, write to Gemma Gallant at Guildhall, High Street, Kingston, KT1 1EU or call 020 8547 5919.

Free cycling opportunities offered to Malden Manor residents This year residents in Malden Manor have been benefiting from a new project run by charity Sustrans, which aims to enable them to get cycling and walking more.

The Active Travel for Health project has been commissioned by Public Health at Kingston Council and will work with at least 600 people in Norbiton and Malden Manor. All activities are free and free community bikes are available to borrow through the scheme. The project has so far included a successful weekly Bike Skills session at Malden Manor Primary School over the summer holidays. This included a ‘Ditch the Stabilisers’ element for kids, learn to ride for adults and Bikeability skills and games for those ready for a bit more of a challenge. Dr Bike drop-in sessions have been run to get old bikes working again and fix glitches, along with led local rides for all the family. The team have also visited the estate with their popular smoothie-bike to get people pedalling for a fruity drink! Over the coming months, Sustrans will re-launch their Bike Skills sessions as an after-school club. They will be running lots more rides, including an escort to and from the Bike Treasure Hunt at Surbiton Library on 11th October.

Workshops will take place under a gazebo on the Sheephouse Way Estate. Everyone is welcome to attend and take part. View from the City The End Of Ages? - Both Iron And Complacency by Justin Urquhart Stewart

If I remember correctly, depending upon your own civilisation, the Iron Age was the next developmental period after the Bronze Age when tanned men in skirts and sandals wielded metal weapons at one another. In western measurements this started around 1200BC and depending on your views came to an end anywhere from 200BC to 400AD, if you are Korean. Last week though, in amongst the Referendum blarney that filled the news hours, Goldman Sachs declared somewhat later than most that we have just reached the end of the Iron Age. Are they just somewhat tardy in their thinking or just a little late in putting out this paper (by 2000 years)? Well no, neither really as the investment house was actually referring to the commodity boom of the past few years that propelled commodity prices, associated commodities companies and indeed economies over the past decade. Since 2011, we have see declines in many metals including copper but especially iron ore, which is now hitting a five year low, dropping by 40% just this year. This has effected some of the leading miners like BHP Billiton and Rio Tinto and other leading names, many of whom are some of the larger ones in the FTSE100 Index. They therefore have a disproportionate impact because of their size. This comes at an especially unfortunate time as the Index has been striving to try and beat its all time high back in the last days of 1999. This is even more galling as we have been seeing the indices of our US cousins regularly hitting all time highs. This fall has a ripple effect around the globe, not just on companies, but on the producing nations especially Brazil and Australia, and even the shipping industry and it is an indication certainly of the slow down that we have seen in the Chinese economy which buys about two thirds of the worlds iron ore production. There is now a concern over a glut that may be forming, further depressing the price and adding to some of the disinflationary concerns in keys areas of the globe. However, if this means a return to the steadier prices of a lower, slower world, then maybe whilst providing weaker returns, it is better for the slowly recovering global economy. Are we going to see the end of the age of complacency at last?

24

The geopolitical issues confidence or complacency? At any one time there are always geopolitical threats around the globe from revolutions to natural disasters, from famines to flooding, from belligerence to bluster, but just at the moment the headlines seem to be reflecting a higher level of tension than just the world’s political tension. However, despite this we have been seeing an almost blissful disregard of such weighty subjects by the investing markets. In fact in the United Kingdom, the important but hardly life threatening concerns over Scottish independence have had a far greater impact than the prospect of global catastrophes. So are we being just supremely confident, or foolishly complacent? The fact is that at present, all of those extremely important and potential dangerous geo-political issues have as yet not had a huge financial impact, but that is not to say that they won’t. For the Middle East, most of the major oil and gas supplies are in the hands of the currently “friendly” partners, and thus the oil price has barely reacted and has even fallen, although most recently that will have been due to the strength of the dollar. In the Ukraine, the effect of any gas taps being turned off has yet to have been factored in, but that may well change once the colder and darker nights of the winter draw in. Even the effect of the trade embargoes to Russia have so far only had a limited effect, but again the longer that goes on the greater the potential effect. The main economic casualty has rather been the Russian markets and the Rouble. As for the Chinese disputes with Japan in the East China Sea and the South East Asian nations around the South China Sea, again this is a festering issue but one that has not reached a crisis point -well at least not yet! So therefore with low interest rates, lower fuel costs, and a global economy growing at around 3% , its long term average, markets still regard the Holy Grail as being half full, rather than half empty. However we should be very wary of some of those hairline cracks that seem to have formed down my precious cup. The answer therefore is for us as investors to remain broadly invested and diversified but to watch carefully, to see if some of these risks start to rise and the confidence starts to falter. Justin Urquhart Stewart is one of the most recognisable and trusted market commentators on television, radio and in the press. Originally trained as a lawyer he has observed the retail market industry for 20 years whilst at Barclays Stockbrokers and developed a unique understanding of the market’s roles and benefits for the private investor

Clubs

Malden Bowling Club by Wendy Redpath

Malden Bowling Club is situated in Lime Grove, directly opposite Christ Church Primary (Infants)car park. The club was founded in 1904.most people, do not realise, that behind the tall fence, the members would be very happy to welcome spectators and anyone who would like to try their hand at the sport. I used to think, when I was young, that bowls was just for old. Well that, is not at all the case, as you should now be told. Years ago, the radio said ‘Come have a go today’ So off I went, to a local club, who had an ‘open day’ I had flat shoes, so all was well.Allowed to ‘tread the green’ I borrowed woods and had a try .Was so glad that I’d been. I found the club right near the school, was welcoming and fun. The people friendly.Cost not huge.New hobby had begun. Although some games are afternoons, there are some evenings too. All ages play, at times that suit. It’s all left up to you. The club is struggling now. It’s sad....our ladies are too few. We need some more to learn and join....be members of our crew. It takes a while, you can’t expect, perfection overnight. I’ve been there years, and still have days, when nothing’s going right. Some, are serious, some not so, but fun is had by all. Come along one Friday eve.You might just have a ball.

30

Watching the bowls match, is fun on this day. To strangers, it’s weird how the woods find their way. The majority they, are rarely bowled straight As a bias they have, which alters the weight. They are aimed to the side. They turn at the end. It’s quite mathematical trying to send... The woods up the green to the ‘Jack’ far away. To get very close, and beside it to stay. It can be great fun, but for some it’s a strain. Main problem’s the weather.it can, be a pain! A hobby, social, and exercise too....so happy, it’s somethingI can do all year through.

Gardening Conifers

by Pippa Greenwood Conifers are a great way to add colour, texture and living sculpture to your garden 365 days of the year. With several hundred different cultivars of conifer to choose from in the UK, there really is one to suit every situation. Dwarf Conifers There are many conifers which reach a maximum height of 1m (3ft). These are obviously particularly useful for small gardens and will often add a great extra dimension to a rock garden or a small-scale border. They may need an occasional trimming, but generally hold their shape well. Recommended: Picea abies ‘Little Gem’, Chamaecyparis lawsoniana ‘Gnome’ , Chamaecyparis lawsoniana ‘Minima Aurea’, Cryptomeria japonica ‘Vilmoriniana’, Picea abies ‘Nidiformis’ Tall and Narrow Very stylish, many of the columnar or tall, slim conifers look especially stunning when used to create a screen, or to add height to a mixed border or a shrub border. Being rather like a living sculpture they are also good grown as a single specimen tree in a lawn. Recommended: Taxus baccata ‘Fastigiata Aurea’, Juniperus scopulorum ‘Skyrocket’, Thuja plicata ‘Fastigiata’. Pyramid-shaped Conifers With their relatively wide bases and narrow tops, pyramidal conifers can bring welcome shape, texture and evergreen colour to your garden and if carefully position are often useful to hide an eyesore. Recommended: Picea albertiana ‘Conica’, Chamaecyparis lawsoniana ‘Yvonne’ or Thymus occidentalis ‘Yellow Ribbon’ Spherical Conifers With their prominently rounded shape these conifers naturally produce a sculptured look and are perfect for growing either side of a gateway or house entrance. They also look great in a mixed border, adding colour, texture and interest when many of the other border ingredients are below ground. Recommended: Chamaecyparis pisifera ‘Sunset’, Chamaecyparis lawsoniana ‘Minima Glauca’, Thuja occidentalis ‘Danice’ Ground-Cover Conifers Great for hiding low-lying eyesores such as manhole covers, an evergreen groundcover hides them all year

36

long. Low growing conifers also work well for covering steep slopes and edging paths and beds. They will help to keep weeds at bay and are very low maintenance. Recommended: Juniperus squamata ‘Blue Coat’, Juniperus conferata, Juniperus communis ‘Compressa’. Conifers for Containers Conifers can look great either on their own (especially when planted with a few small bulbs around their roots, to add splashes of seasonal colour) or in a mixed planting where they help to bring structure, texture and off-season colour. Recommended: Juniperus compressa ‘Compressa’, Chamaecyparis lawsoniana ‘Ellwood’s Gold’, Cryptomeria japonica ‘Sekkan-Sugi’ , Chamaecyparis lawsoniana ‘Springtime’, Pinus leucodermis ‘Schmidtii’ Conifer Planting and Growing Tips - Make the planting hole a minimum of 1m wide by 30cm deep and incorporate plenty of bulky organic matter such as garden compost, proprietary planting mix or well-rotted manure. - Tease or spread out the roots well and backfill the hole with garden soil mixed with planting compost. - Make sure that only the roots are below the soil surface, water in well. - Keep the soil moist at all times, especially during late spring and summer when drought is likely. - Feed in April using a proprietary fertiliser to keep the growth good and ensure it is a good colour. - Trim conifers regularly but remember if you cut back into old or brown growth you’ll end up expose all the old growth as they don’t produce dormant buds. Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood.com for a great range of gardening-related items including‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ Gift Cards, handmade pottery herb planters, Pippa’s favourite weeding tool, signed books and lots of useful garden items.

Master craftsman Alan Bennett takes a wry, poignant look at the comprised situation of the ‘Cambridge spies’ and the shadows lying behind even the most familiar facades. An Englishman Abroad is the touching story of actress Coral Browne’s chance encounter with disgraced spy Guy Burgess in a Moscow theatre. Invited to dine at his flat, she receives just one simple instruction - ‘bring a tape measure’. A Question of Attribution follows Anthony Blunt, esteemed art historian and Surveyor of the Queen’s Pictures. As he tries to solve the riddle of an enigmatic painting, Blunt finds himself the subject of a more official investigation by MI5.

Will he be exposed for what would later be revealed to the world - that the man who worked in the heart of the Royal household was also a Soviet spy? Recipe

Mushroom and chicken pot pies These perfectly portioned individual pies make a filling lunch or supper simply served with steamed vegetables. You can use any mix of mushrooms but it’s worth looking out for packs of mixed exotic mushrooms for extra flavour. Makes 4 Ready in 1 hour 25g dried porcini mushrooms 25g butter 2 tbsp olive oil 2 shallots, peeled and chopped 2 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed 400g mixed mushrooms, chopped if large 250g chicken breast fillet, diced 200g tub crème fraiche 1 tbsp fresh thyme leaves 300g puff pastry Beaten egg, to glaze 1 Place the porcini in a heatproof bowl and cover with 150ml boiling water. Leave to soak for 10-15 minutes. Preheat the oven to 220C, Fan 200C, Gas Mark 7. 2 Heat the butter and half the olive oil in a large frying pan and fry the shallots for 5 minutes until softened. Add the garlic and fry for a further 3-4 minutes then stir in all the mushrooms and fry over a high heat until softened. Remove with a slotted spoon and set aside. 3 Add the rest of the oil to the frying pan and fry the diced chicken for 5-6 minutes until golden brown all over. 4 Drain the porcini mushrooms and add the soaking liquid to the chicken. Bring to the boil then simmer for 5 minutes until reduced. Meanwhile, finely chop the porcini mushrooms and stir into the fried mushrooms and shallots.

5 Return all the mushrooms and shallots to the pan and stir in the crème fraiche and thyme leaves. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste. Divide the mixture between four individual ovenproof pie dishes. Brush the rims of the dishes with water. 6 Roll out the pastry to about 4mm thickness. Cut out four circles of pastry big enough to fit on top of the dishes with a little pastry overlapping the edges. Drape the pastry circles over the filling. Decorate the tops with leaves cut from the pastry trimmings and brush the pastry with beaten egg. Bake in the preheated oven for about 20 minutes until the pastry is crisp and golden.

The Better Life Life Cycle

by Derek Thompson

“Pedelecs,” she said. “That’s the way to go.” I couldn’t see why we needed to cross a boating lake, but I was keen to find out why. Pedelecs, she swiftly educated me, are electrically assisted bicycles - perfect for those short to medium journeys that do not merit the car, and which might otherwise tire me out. Even better, these were used bikes - i.e. recycled - so they came with doubly green credentials. Although why someone would want to recycle an eco bike was beyond me. As is our way, once we’d been inspired action swiftly followed. All it took was a fair chunk of money and a man with a trailer to deliver the goods, and we were soon the proud owners of a pair of barely used Lafree Giant Twists. Aside from the fact that both bikes look identical (although mine doesn’t have a wicker basket on the front), the Twists soon became a talking point in the village. The downhill journey out is a little like a funfair ride, only with chaffinches and woodpigeons instead of skeletons and ghosts. It’s a different story coming back in, though, and it almost feels like the birds gather in the hedgerows to watch me puffing up the 1 in 4 incline. The neighbours gather too, sometimes, with a now familiar litany of questions. 1. No, the motor doesn’t do all the work for you - only half of it. Less, if you use it on eco mode. 2. Yes, our hill is very steep. That would be why I’m sweating. 3. Yes, the bike is keeping me fit. That’s why my face is red and my legs ache. 4. No, I’d rather not fetch any shopping for you in my dapper and roomy panniers, but thanks for noticing them. For the technically minded, the bike’s NiMH battery has a range of about 20 miles, as long as there aren’t too many hills like ours. I commute by bike now and I’m still surprised by how quickly I can pull away at the lights, to the consternation of other cyclists. Motorists,

54

pedestrians and horses are surprised too, but that’s usually when I meet them at the bend in the lane on the way home. It’s a wonder I haven’t worn my bell out. I only work in town three days a week, so the battery gets a recharge at the same time as my legs, unless we head out for a jaunt along the coast. Cycling is an instant time machine. Suddenly I’m 11 again, a bottle filled with squash clipped to the frame, racing along for the joy of it. A child at a crossing recently broke this nostalgic reverie. She stared for a moment and asked, “Mummy, why is that man riding a girl’s bike?” Despite all the bike’s green credentials, my 11 year-old self cringed. Well, until the lights changed anyway.

N B E W AS M ED AL IN D EN

When it was time to look into greener modes of transport Anne was already two wheels ahead of me.” These would be good,” she glanced over from the local paper, which would soon find its way into the woodburner. I immediately felt a sense of foreboding, as if a new batch of chickens were already winging their way to us. But no, it was something else.

Researching Asylums

by Dave Padget Asylum is one of those words which whilst not changing meaning, has become nowadays unfamiliar in common useage. The Oxford Dictionary states the meaning of the word thus: 1 [mass noun] (also political asylum) The protection granted by a state to someone who has left their home country as a political refugee: she applied for asylum and was granted refugee status [as modifier]: his asylum application was refused More example sentences 1.Shelter or protection from danger: we provide asylum for those too ill to care for themselves Synonyms 2 dated An institution for the care of people who are mentally ill: he’d been committed to an asylum We now more commonly use the word asylum in meaning number 1 above Not so long ago the more common use of the

56

word would relate to point number 2,and it was not only people suffering from mental illness who were “committed” to asylums. People who we would now describe as having special educational needs in days gone by or women having children out of wedlock could easily end up in an asylum. Before the advent of social services and other NHS provisions, asylums grew out of the Poor Law provisions and were the principal service provision for “mentally subnormal” or “mentally handicapped” people as they were then described. It is only now following the popular television series,”Secrets from the Asylum” and the documentary about the Queen’s relatives that popular media is becoming aware of these places some 25 years since most of them closed. Locally there were a number of asylums which over the years provided accommodation and training for people who for one reason or another could not live with their parents or family. Remember, these were days before many effective treatments had been developed for epilepsy, mood disorders and depression as well as psychosis and where the infant welfare state had yet to understand many of the conditions which could result in a developmental delay or handicap.Where

parents in unfortunate circumstances may have struggled with many children and not have the resources or support to allow them to care for a child with a disability. Within a 20 mile radius of New Malden, there were at least 6 such asylums.Over the years, successive public social policy changed them from being archtitect designed havens of peace and tranquility in the countryside for the disadvantaged and disabled to the discredited, outdated and neglected “bins”,mired in scandal and neglected. It is significant that whilst some of these places have been demolished, others have been turned into very up market apartments and dwellings which have restored some of the original vision of the 19th century philanthropists and architects who created them in the first place I was privileged to visit many of these establishments in the course of my working life and would like to hear from anyone locally who has memories or experiences of these places.I am interested in researching these lost worlds where so many people live for very long times before the advent of community care.I recognise that many of the memories may be painful. Of particular interest are first- hand accounts

A Malden Man Hidden New Malden by Raj Randhawa

Everyone knows something. No one knows everything. So, I thought I’d help everyone know a little more- about New Malden’s hidden gems. I’ve been living here for eight years and I still stumble across places I never knew about. I’m sure most of you will know some of these places, but hopefully there’ll be something new here you might not have come across. Walk or Run First up is Beverley Brook, which has its start in Worcester Park and runs through New Malden, all the way through to Richmond Park. My friend Justin recommended I go running along the path, so on his advice, I followed it’s path- unable to run beside it until I had run 4k! By that time I

was over in Wimbledon Common, but it was well worth it. There are runners and dog walkers that hug its flow through beautiful wooded areas. It’s well worth seeking out for a walk or a run. (Although technically the part of the brook I’m talking about isn’t actually in New Malden, I’ve included it anyway. Because I can!). Karaoke! The Korean restaurant opposite Bar Malden- Han Bar has a secret! Below its perfectly respectable facade lurks a labyrinth of private karaoke rooms. This is where seemingly normal folk, on descending in to the bowels of Han Bar, become deranged howlers, bellowers and massacres of modern music. You don’t have to drink to have a good time, but here, it certainly helps! Real Ale. Lots of people already know about Woodies, but there are many that don’t. Hidden away next to a sports ground on Thetford Road, Woodies even promotes itself as ‘New Malden’s best kept secret’. It’s a privately owned Free House with a

large range of constantly changing real ales. A few months ago, they added a huge patio area out front, which is the perfect spot for a summers evening of real ale quaffing. Hardware On the High Street, there’s a great little hardware shop that’s easy to miss. It’s very much like ‘Arkwrights’ store in ‘Open All Hours’. When you step inside, there’s no mistaking its authenticity and the gents that run the place are very helpful indeed. It’s better than traipsing off to B&Q and like I’ve said before, if we want them to stay, we must support our local businesses. Fancy a Korean? With lots of Korean restaurants to choose from, if you’re not in the know, where do you go? Well, Jee’s Korean Restaurant, although not in a prime location- instead nestled in the parade of shops on Burlington Road, came third in a recent poll of best Korean restaurants in London. That’s mighty praise indeed! The food is more ‘home-cooked’ than fancy-shmancy, but by all accounts, the

portions are generous, it’s authentic, very tasty and won’t break the bank. Miramonte House “Excuse me” I hear you mutter. Exactly, I thought not. Miramonte House in Coombe, was built by the English Architect Edwin Maxwell Fry (1899-1987). Maxwell Fry was Cheshire born and trained at Liverpool School of Architecture in 1923. In 1920 he became interested in Modernist architecture. His finest projects include Kensal House in Ladbroke Grove (1937), Impington Village College (1939) Cambridgeshire and of course Miramonte in New Malden (1936). The house is located in Warren Rise, close to the Coombe Hill Golf Club and it occupies a special place in the history of modernism in England. It was built for property developer Gerry Green to a high specification, and included a separate pavilion for the chauffeur’s flat and a swimming pool. The reinforced concrete was painted in cream colour and the canopies and parapets finished in copper. Sliding windows were provided throughout and electric ceiling heating in the bedrooms. Despite the loss of some features and interior furniture, the Grade II listed house was refurbished in 2000 by Avanti Architects. The Grafton Club The Grafton Club is probably somewhere you’ve driven past a number of times, wondered what it was and quickly forgot about it, until the next time you drove past it, when you thought to yourself “I wonder what…”. Well wonder no more, it’s a members’ only club inside of a detached house on Grafton Rd! It’s a sports related club with a TV bar, fruit machines, a dartboard and four snooker tables out the back. And if that’s not enough, check out little Sri Lanka on Burlington Road- where you’ll find a South Indian/ Sri Lankan restaurant called ‘Friends’, supermarkets and for all of you ladies out there- there’s a new salon called Baroness Beauty Parlour providing a competitively priced threading service. (I still don’t know how you can pay someone to put you through so much pain!).
