Dear Readers

September can be a funny month…marking the end of the summer but also celebrating many new beginnings, with the annual “back to school” for hundreds of our children across the Borough (not to mention teachers, who are hopefully feeling refreshed after the summer break and of course all those parents, patiently queuing up for shiny new shoes, replenishing pencil cases and frantically labeling up every item of said new kit!). September also marks the time of year when many of our local teenagers are packing up their bedrooms and saying their farewells to parents, siblings and old school friends as they think about heading off to university (whether for the first time or returning to their now familiar ‘second home’ mid-way through a course) It’s an exciting time that brings a lump to the throats of many mums (and dads!) as well as a great feeling of pride…but don’t worry, college terms are still pretty short (there was a reason it was the best time of our lives!) and they’ll all be back home before you know it (probably in time for the grand switching of the Christmas Lights!) As much as I LOVE the summer (the long, lazy and light evenings, the BBQs, drinks in the garden, holidays and the general feeling of life slowing down a gear for a few weeks), there’s also something pretty special about the onset of Autumn. Living where we do (with Beverley, Nonsuch and Richmond Parks so close by) we’re very fortunate to be able to witness the gradual change of colours and to feel the crisp Autumn air whilst out walking the dog or perhaps going for a run or cycle (and maybe even clinging onto a bit of warm sunshine with a last minute “Indian Summer” that we’ve seen over the past few years). Harvest Celebrations will be upon us soon…although I’ve got mixed feelings about some of the produce coming off our family allotment at the moment! If there was a category for the most misshapen potato at a local harvest fair, then I reckon the Stuart family would be in with a chance of a trophy. Hmmm, how about my readers sharing their photos of the funniest fruit and veg (home grown in New Malden of course!) Now, maybe that’s an idea for the October issue of the Village Voice …. So, I’ve leave you with that thought as well as taking this opportunity to wish you all a “Super September”, whatever you’re up to! And, once again, lots of luck to all of our youngsters starting school for the first time, moving onto Secondary School or embarking on a great new adventure at college, University, first job or apprenticeship! Enjoy it and embrace it! Best wishes,

Jenny

New Malden History In the beginning (part 2) by Robin Gill

Last month we left you with the Groves estate laid out with three quarters of the plots bought up by members of the National Freehold Land Society. Of course, that doesn’t mean that the roads were covered with properties in the process of construction, far from it. The right to vote was granted to owners of land with a value of £30 for building purposes, but they didn’t have to build anything. Having said that, the first stage of the development was complete and the horses and carts used to make the roadway connecting the estate to Kingston, (now Kingston and Cambridge Roads) were sold off. 12 cart horses together with carriages for carrying timber, bricks, and building refuse. By the time of the 1851 census (30th March) Henry Berry had purchased the building which was to become the Railway Tavern (now The Glasshouse),

and on the opposite side of the road and railway bridge, there was another building called the Malden Arms although not trading as a public house. Earlier that month, representatives of both public houses had attended the annual licensing meeting at the town hall in Kingston (now Market House) hoping to gain permission to sell spirits. Berry stated that he had spent £1000 in buying the freehold of his building, whilst Mr John Gover the chairman of a large assurance company had purchased 36 acres of land from the Duke Of Cambridge (area now covered by Grafton Road, and Cambridge Road) where several properties were under construction, and had also built the Railway Hotel (Malden Arms). He stated that he had invested around £6,000 in the development of New Malden. Furthermore he had a letter from the railway company stating that they thought a licensed house close to the station was a necessity, and recommended Mr Gover.

The decision by the bench granting the licences was deferred until the following weekend, but even then the magistrates could not choose, and took the option not to licence either establishment. To be fair there was no population to be serviced at that time.

July to December while looking for suitable areas for their next paintings, Ophelia, The Huguenot (Millais) The Light Of The World and The Hireling Shepherd (Hunt). They initially stayed in Surbiton before moving to Worcester Park Farm in September. As we now know, they found their inspiration at the farm, the River Hogsmill nearby, and the old mills that lined the river. These old mills went out with a bang when at 00.30am on 16th December there were two large explosions which woke the neighbourhood, being heard as far away as Putney and Wandsworth, as two of the outbuildings exploded. Fortunately, due to the time of day, there were no injuries.

Artistic licence The railway company played their part in attracting would be buyers or tenants to the estate by offering cheap tickets from London to the “suburbs” putting on an extra carriage attached to the 1.30pm train from London, and the 7.15pm return to the metropolis. Admittedly, this was in an open seated carriage, and your comfort would be heavily dependent on the weather, but the fare was only one shilling (5 pence) return. This was in the days when a first class season ticket was £20 per annum. Two people not put off visiting the area by the weather in 1851 were the artists John Millais, Holman Hunt, and Charles Collins who spent time in the area from

Millais surprisingly, was not all consumed by his artistic pursuits; I have found a record of him turning out to play cricket for Worcester Park against Malden on 29th August. He scored 3, and was 0 not out in his second innings as Malden easily won the match. This was not surprising as the Malden team included Mr (later Sir) Charles Pontifex who went on to play 1st Class cricket for Cambridge University. Any connection he had with Malden is not known. Millais writes in one of his letters

I have been teaching violin and viola for 30 years. The last 20 years have been spent teaching at Tanglin Trust School, a prestigious British school in Singapore. I teach all ages but I specialise in children from the age of 6 upwards. What is my philosophy? I believe that children should first of all enjoy music. Exams are important, but should not be pursued just for the sake of a piece of paper. My 'mission' is to foster a life-long and genuine love of music through patience, dedication, motivational tools and humour. For those students that have an aptitude and are interested in musical achievement, I prepare them rigorously for performance and ABRSM examinations. For others, the lessons are simply a fun and fantastic way to produce creative and well-rounded individuals. that he had “broken the nail of the little finger of his left hand in catching a ball at cricket”. Public inquiry Meanwhile, back in New Malden, the time had come around again for the two establishments either side of the railway station to make their pitch to be granted a licence to sell spirits. Mr Gover talked about the building of two roads Cambridge, and Marlborough (unknown) after paying £5,000 for the land from the Duke Of Cambridge. Mr Berry argued that his establishment was on the side of the station where the entrance and steps were. But all this fell on the deaf ears of the magistrates, as again they decided that the population of the area did not warrant one let alone two licensed premises. There were still few houses built on the estate, but the landholders still had the right to vote. This they did in the July General Election, most if not all voting for the Liberals. By the October of the year (1852) just eight houses had been built on the Society’s estate, this was out of a total of 275 allotments or just under 3%. The Society had paid £4,500 for the total area, and sold it to its members for around £8,800. Voting intentions The right to vote taken by some who had bought land was queried. John Thomas Bedford had paid £114 for his half acre in Coombe Road, and other than fence in the boundaries had done little else with it. He fully intended it to use for building in the future, so his name was retained on the voting list. Cass Buckler had purchased land in Chestnut Grove 100 ft (front) by 150ft (depth); other owners testified that they thought it was worth more than 40/- for building purposes, but because this could not be proved, his name was removed from the list. William Cullenford had paid £30 for his land and spent another £20 in drainage and the planting of shrubs, and felt it was worth at least £3 per year. Unfortunately because there was no official surveyor report, the barristers refused to accept this, and Cullenford was removed from the list. The last case is interesting as William who was described as a comedian, was an important actor of longstanding in the theatres of London, and was to play an important part in the development of New Malden over the next twenty years. His family lived in their property (Jasmine Cottage) eventually built in Chestnut Grove, until 1923, a period of over 65 years. Tickets please 1852 also saw the arrival of a stationmaster at Malden railway station. While he may not have been the first stationmaster, Edward Dean was to stay in his

8

position for sixteen years, when he was then moved to Haydons Road near Wimbledon. It would be fair to say that there would have initially not be too much to do at a country station with four trains stopping each day, and three on Sundays. There were the occasional disputes particularly with Mr Berry (Railway Tavern), and changing the signage as the name of the station changed from Malden to New Malden and Coombe in 1859, and then Coombe and Malden in 1862. His initial pay was 19/- a week (95 pence), and he was awarded £10 a year to rent a property in New Malden in Lime Grove. By the time of his departure in 1868 he had become a prominent member of the community known for his “courtesy and obliging disposition”. By the end of 1852 houses were very slowly being built on the Groves estate, but other building was taking place elsewhere. On Malden Road (now Kingston Road) cottages were springing up around the area where the Wellington pub used to stand, these stretched as far as Thompson’s Lane (Elm Road) sometimes known as Scarem’s. Also being built were cottages in Malden Grove (Grafton Road) and Cambridge Road. The majority, if not all of these cottages were for rent, whereas those on the Groves estate were described as Villas, and built to order for those who had purchased the land. Next month, I hope to introduced the pioneers of “the village” who banded together to get things done, and eventually prised the district away from the control of Kingston who had neglected it for years. 1) A Huguenot painting by John Millais 2) John Thomas Bedford 3) New Malden Station If anyone remembers, or had connections with NEMCOM (New Malden Co-operative Musical Society) please could you get in touch. Road Congestion And Controlled Parking Zone Scheme For New Malden (CPZ) As you will all probably be aware by now, Kingston Council has issued a Parking Consultation for New Malden. This Consultation has been some time in coming, but it has stirred up quite heated feelings on both sides of the question. In some roads, especially around the station and, we understand, The Malden Centre, parking for residents can be very stressful. On the other hand, parking in many roads for many residents is not a problem as the majority of houses have off road parking. The main problem as it appears to be, is commuters driving to New Malden and parking for the day in order to use public transport. In the case of The Malden Centre, it is people not wanting to pay to use the car parking facilities.

of choices to be made. People might live near public transport - might have bus stops just down the road or a train station within reach, but generally speaking they will still want to own a car to use it in the evenings or at the weekends. If they live

These are just two examples of many more situations, i.e. parking to visit the High Street - Library - etc. Having previously lived in a terraced house in Streatham with some houses having more than one car, I often used to arrive back in my street in the evening and have to drive out of the road and park some distance from my house. This was simply annoying sometimes, but I did not have a baby that I had to “unload” from the car, or an elderly person who might have need of a wheelchair. The other side of the coin, as has been pointed out to me, is that if a Scheme is implemented, the number of car parking spaces in a road will likely decrease as car parking will not be allowed over driveways. In addition, many people have grown-up families who visit on a regular occasion and who would then need a voucher in order to be able to park. This would considerably increase the cost of parking for the householder and in some cases, could be a “financial burden”. For the purposes of the Consultation, New Malden has been been divided into six areas, but this just means that if one area adopts the CPZ, parking problems could well shift to another area. Having welcomed the idea of a Consultation, as I genuinely feel that residents should be consulted on important issues such as this one, I have received many comments on the way it has been presented and the list

in a flat where there is inadequate parking, they will park it in the nearest available road or parking area. The New Malden (Beverley Ward) Residents’ Association is neutral on this subject as we have to appreciate that our members (for reasons stated above) do not share the same views on a CPZ Scheme. However, we are aware that parking and road congestion is only going to get worse in New Malden and Kingston Council, at the present time, do not seem to have a strategy for dealing with the congestion issue before our roads become gridlocked. More developments are being built that do not have “adequate” parking provision, and whilst Central Governments and therefore local Councils are keen to promote “greener” transport, a level of reality doesn’t seem to be much in existence. We know there are two proposed developments currently in Blagdon Road. Malden House with over 90 flats and the multi storey car park with c. 80 flats. Whilst there will “probably”be adequate parking places provided for the flats, this does mean that this additional traffic (as traffic flow is at present) will be having to enter and exit into the High Street which is already clogged up.

At the present time, at certain times of the day, the roads leading to the Fountain Roundabout (either going to or coming from the A3) are almost at a standstill. Kingston Road is clogged up with traffic and with the advent of Aldi and the student accommodation (no cars, but buses to and from the University (where can they turn in Kingston Road?)), this is certainly not going to improve. The High Street also is almost at a standstill morning and afternoon and this also will not become less congested. Apart from any other consideration, environmentally it must be a cause for concern as apart from the sheer amount of traffic along these roads, the continual stopping and starting adds to exhaust fumes. I do not see any easy solution to both the parking issue and the congestion problem, but as far as the latter is concerned, it would be less worrying if Kingston Council could show that they are aware of the problem in New Malden. Whether they can do anything to alleviate the amount of traffic, or keep it moving, remains to be seen. www.newmaldenresidents.org. newmaldenresidents@gmail.com

A photographer dreams September by Hugh Griffiths

-

I love Bushy Park! Although we’ve lived in New Malden for over 30 years, it is only in the last 2 or 3 years that I have really discovered this lovely park. True, parking can be a problem on sunny days – but there is always the hidden car park by the Pheasantry Café if the one by the ponds is full. I do love the ponds – and as the autumn draws closer, there are often great chances to catch the light in a very beautiful way. The swans are often very keen to be photographed – and close ups of their feathers and heads can be very attractive. But this day, I was wandering around the first pond and watching the various families enjoying the sunshine. The sky was that lovely slate colour, and the sun was shining through to highlight this tree and the family beside it. The swans were an added bonus – just sitting, watching and resting. The fisherman had his lie-back seat and a collection of rods ready to catch the fish that live in the pond. The mother with her child and his bike watching … were they all the same family? Were they just walking by? The overall

impression is one of peace and calm. A far cry from the lives that most of us lead! In contrast, I was down in Lancing during the month and walking along the beach path to Shoreham. There is a large lagoon on the way with egrets living there. Normally they are quite happy to wander around in the shallow water, looking for small fish for their lunch. Not this day! Clearly one was pushing into the personal space of the other. And equally clearly, the bird on the left was pretty upset about this. I like the sense of movement and threat in the picture; the egret on the right is hunkering down and clearly about to lose the battle. They never touched each other – the threat was

You know, taking pictures that are a joy to look at isn’t the most difficult thing to do – it takes patience in waiting for the right picture to appear and then seizing that moment. It can also take time to develop the ability to see the right composition in the scene in front of you. I look back at my photos from 5 or 10 years ago and can easily see how they could have been better. Our local camera club – www. maldencameraclub.org.uk - has provided me and others with the opportunities to be challenged and to make more attractive pictures.

all in the show, and the result was that the egret on the right ran and flew out of the way. I used a very long lens in getting this picture – those of you with long zoom compact cameras could do the same – and also had the camera taking a whole series of frames at high speed. That enabled me to catch the birds in a range of poses. Focussing was a problem – they were moving around – but the distance they were from me and the camera’s ability to shift focus as the main point moved got this in almost perfect focus. You can see the water dripping off the legs of the bird on the left as it flies up to attack its enemy.

How To Celebrate a Happy and Healthy Life My name is Pat Farr, and I have lived in New Malden since 1939. On the 3rd September that year, war was declared and my 14th birthday followed 2 months later. My sister Betty was ten years old, so it was decided that we should both be evacuated to Somerset. But, we only stayed for a few months before returning home. At that time, there was quite a lot of air activity on the coast and in parts of London but, Malden was fairly quiet, apart for the air raid sirens which often sounded. I started work at Tudor Williams, but on 16th August 1940, New Malden suffered its first air raid, when German planes arrived following the railway lines, and proceeded to machine gun the station, killing 10 people. On the 70th anniversary of this event in 2010, I wrote a poem based on my memories of that day which was now 75 years ago. During the war years, over 300 houses were demolished in New Malden, and hundreds more boarded up, at least 90 people were killed, and the Baptist Church was destroyed. On October 19th 1940 the municipal depot (now Waitrose) received a direct hit, and there was much more damage and destruction. Despite this, the community spirit was wonderful, and the Civil Defence, Fire Brigade, and ARP Wardens, in fact all services were magnificent. Those of us lucky to survive the war, have so much to be grateful for, and I have had a very “Happy and Healthy Life”. I have a wonderful family, and I thank God that I have been truly blessed, and those who know my husband Dave, know I have a gem. My 90th birthday is now a couple of months away, and I wondered how to celebrate it. I thought what better way than to get behind the wheel of a Ferrari at Dunsfold Aerodrome. I know it’s a bit scary, but I am really looking forward to the challenge. My grandchildren have made the arrangements, but I felt there must be a purpose behind doing it. I do not know any family that have not been affected by cancer, so I am being very cheeky and asking whether you will sponsor me by giving a donation to the Royal Marsden or Cancer Research, to give hope and new life to cancer sufferers. It would give me so much pleasure to be able to give a donation from the people of Malden. We are of many cultures and religions, but I believe we are a

Memories Of August 16th 1940 I cannot believe seventy five years have passed, But how well I remember that dreadful blast, It was almost a year from the outbreak of war, We had no idea what life had in store. Just a few hundred yards away, That’s where I was on that fateful day, At Tudor Williams the department store, It was my first job; I was on the shop floor. It was late afternoon, almost time to go home, But suddenly the sound of a mighty drone, What was happening? We hadn’t a clue, Alarmed and bewildered, what should we do? To the back of the shop we silently stood, Something dreadful had happened, it wasn’t good. The all clear sounded, but what was on my mind, I just had to get home, and what would I find, My heart pounding, I ran all the way home, In those days we didn’t have a phone. Such a relief, Mum and Dad were there, And my sister Bet, I just said a prayer. But at the station, and many places, Men, Women and children their bloody faces, Had died as the bombs came hurtling down, Their bodies lifeless on the ground. In New Malden this was just the start, Of a wonderful community, where we all played a part. To those boys in the air, I would just like to say, If it wasn’t for you, we wouldn’t be here today, And to all the forces in World War Two, You gave us a life, and this surely is true.

View from the City

by Justin Urquhart Stewart

China’s Currency Conundrum Currencies are a conundrum for all, whether you are a central bank, a pension fund, or just a private investor trying to protect the value of your assets. They are often the forgotten part of an investment as most focus goes on the investment itself, be it a stock or a bond, and the currency is just part of the process of executing the deal. In fact the movements in currency can be the vital “swing factor” as to whether you are actually making money or losing it. In the days when currencies were “fixed”, life seemed so much easier as it took one variable out of your decision - at least you knew how many £s your investment was going to cost you. However once you move to variable values then anything can happen. Well actually life wasn’t that simple as so called “fixed” currencies were pegged at a rate until such time as economic forces blew the peg away. In 1967 Prime Minister Harold Wilson famously stated that: “It does not mean that the Pound here in Britain, in your pocket or purse or in your bank, has been devalued.” But of course it did, as the Swiss and the Danes saw earlier this year when busting their “firm” pegs against the Euro. All we can learn from this is that there is no certainty in pegged currencies, and in fact they can be more dangerous as they build up a head of steam until their value is no longer sustainable - and instead of a gentle movement in the currency you end up with a market tremor as the pressure is released. So last week we saw that the “pegged” Chinese currency wasn’t as secure as many had thought, and what was described by the central bank as being a one-time move to enhance the “market orientation and benchmark status” of the Renminbi, turned out to be a multi-day event throughout the week. Immediately the headlines talked of currency wars and national currency manipulation. Well I have yet to find a country that does not try to “manipulate” its currency for its own benefit. After all, exporters like to remain competitive and a rising currency can easily erode such value. Some of the populist American politicians also voiced (on cue) that this was Chinese anti-American policy leading to goods being dumped on the world market. The trouble is for the US$ is that in bad economic times for the globe investors seek protection in the $, and then in sunnier times investors like to benefit from a rising $. So it is difficult to win in their case.

24

The US Dollar of course has this status as it is the leading reserve currency in the world, with the Euro and Yen coming a distant second and third, along with Sterling trailing some way behind at something close to just 4%. For the Chinese, one of their stated aims has been to try and have their currency be accepted more internationally and to also become a reserve currency to the globe, and to the IMF in their SDRs (Special Drawing Rights). So part of last week’s movements were in all likelihood part of this broadening out process for the Renminbi to become more globally traded. London has already made its claim to try and be a centre for Renminbi trading, and the Chinese are keen to be able to wean their trades and contracts off their dependence on the Dollar and into their own currency. China still has some way to go, as having “soft” peg is neither one thing nor the other. The currency must become fully tradeable, but for the moment the authorities are worried about letting go their control, and in my view quite rightly until the proper trading mechanisms and controls are in place as we see with the fully recognised reserve currencies. In the meantime the juddering movements in the Renminbi will continue to have reverberations in other currencies as was seen last week throughout Asia especially. What though was of greater concern was the Dollar effect on those developing nations with $ denominated debt. Here countries like Malaysia and Indonesia have seen the cost of their debt go up significantly as the $ rises and their currency falls on the rippling effects from the Renminbi. For those with a memory going back to the South American sovereign debt crisis in the 1980s, a similar issue became very painful for those Latin nations who had been sold solid Dollar loans which became increasingly unsustainable as the Dollar rose and the Latin currencies crumpled. All of this has created a level of nervousness in the low volume trading days of August, and as such the volatility in equity markets has been exacerbated by the thinness of trading. The sooner we get back to deeper trading days the better - roll on St Leger day! Justin Urquhart Stewart is one of the most recognisable and trusted market commentators on television, radio and in the press. Originally trained as a lawyer he has observed the retail market industry for 20 years whilst at Barclays Stockbrokers and developed a unique understanding of the market’s roles and benefits for the private investor

Events New Malden Theatre Director shines light on a hidden problem A theatre director has been so inspired by the New Malden anti-trafficking group she belongs to she’s produced a new play for World Anti-Slavery Day (18th October 2015). Jude Spooner, founder and managing director of Rah Rah Theatre Company, commissioned playwright Sam Hall to tell stories of human trafficking in the play, ‘MY MIND IS FREE’. It tours venues in London and the South East this October, supported by Arts Council England and Merton Council. The play comes to New Malden on Saturday 10th October. There are an estimated 30 million slaves in the world, with approximately 13,000 in the UK. Modern day slavery victims include women forced into prostitution, ‘imprisoned’ domestic staff, and workers in fields, factories, building sites and fishing boats. Sam and Jude – a member of the New Malden Abolition Group - were inspired to team up on the play to highlight this injustice in the UK. Their goal is to share

their knowledge about this modern day crime and to create an artistic response to this, which will both provoke and disturb in equal measures. ‘MY MIND IS FREE’ tells the stories of some of the people who have fallen into what can only be described as modern day slavery. Sam has done extensive research with anti-trafficking charities, Merton Against Trafficking, Blythswood Care, The Medaille Trust and ECPAT UK, and the play is inspired by true life stories from victims, which have then been fictionalised. Each performance will also have a speaker from an anti-trafficking charity so the audience can find out more about what to do if they think somebody is being trafficked near them. Rah Rah is delighted that New Malden Abolition Group, is involved and will be hosting this event: Saturday 10th of October 2015 7.30pm New Malden Abolition Group New Malden Baptist, 1A Westbury Road, New Malden KT3 5BE Ticket Price: £5 Tickets online: www.mymindisfree.com For other dates and more information, please see www. mymindisfree.com – where tickets can be purchased online.

Baking Lemon Crumble Cheesecake Bars Tangy and creamy with a golden buttery crumble topping, these cheesecake bars make a delicious sweet treat. For a smoother cheesecake filling, use full-fat soft cheese instead of the ricotta. Makes 12 slices Ready in 1½ hours, plus chilling time FOR THE BASE: 250g plain flour 2 tsp baking powder 140g butter, chilled and diced 125g caster sugar 1 medium egg, beaten FOR THE FILLING: 750g ricotta cheese 225g caster sugar Zest and juice of 1 lemon 3 medium eggs, beaten 100ml soured cream 1 tbsp cornflour Fresh mint sprigs, to decorate 1 Preheat the oven to 180C/Fan 160C/Gas Mark 4. Grease an 18cm x 28cm tray-bake tin and line the base with baking paper. 2 To make the base, sift together the flour and baking powder into a large bowl. Rub in the butter until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs then stir in the sugar. Reserve a third of the mixture and chill in the fridge. Stir the beaten egg into the rest of the mixture to make a crumbly dough. Spread into the base of the prepared tin and press down firmly in an even layer. 3 Bake the cheesecake base for 15-20 minutes, or until pale golden. Remove from the oven and leave to cool

for 15 minutes. Reduce the oven temperature to 160C/ Fan 140C/Gas Mark 3. 4 To make the filling, beat the ricotta cheese, sugar and lemon juice and zest in a bowl until creamy then gradually beat in the eggs. Fold in the soured cream and cornflour and spread the mixture over the warm base. 5 Sprinkle the reserved fine crumble mixture over the top in an even layer. Bake in the oven for 30-35 minutes, or until set and pale golden. Leave in the tin to cool completely then chill for 2-3 hours. Slice into 12 bars and serve decorated with fresh mint sprigs. TIP For an extra fruity flavour, scatter some fresh blueberries or raspberries over the cheesecake mixture before sprinkling with the crumble mixture.

New Malden Creative

New Malden Creative was a group set up by friends; Claire Rudkin and Danielle O'Shaughnessy. Both had a feeling that there are other like-minded creative people in New Malden and wanted to meet them. So they arranged a couple of gatherings in the Glasshouse and it snowballed from there. New Malden Creative was born and quickly became a group of artists, writers, actors, musicians, photographers, dancers and more. Early on they teamed up with Bona Shin from Theatre for All and together (in a very short time) they managed to pull off an arts trail, music stage and public talk on Korea. As a result of this success, the number of events and contributors towards this year’s arts festival has grown. New Malden Creative have got involved in many events and are implementing exciting activities such as, Battle of the Bands and “Paint the high street red” with the Suburban Sketchers. Without the hard work and effort of these volunteers the festival would not take place and for this we are truly thankful and delighted. We look forward to hearing from you. Gardening Lovely Lawns

Pippa Greenwood Almost every garden has a lawn, and there is a lot you can do to keep it in good condition. Don’t wait until spring but get to work now with some autumn lawn care to keep your lawn looking healthy and green. Large weeds in small lawns are best removed by hand, perhaps using a sturdy old kitchen knife – perfect for removing dandelions, small clumps of daisies and other weeds missed by the mower. You should also take a look at the level of moss in the lawn: when green and luxuriant it can look quite attractive, but once it dies out the lawn will look really awful. On the whole, moss in lawns is encouraged by compaction, poor drainage of the soil and lawn surface and by excessive shading, perhaps by nearby trees or herbaceous plants in adjacent borders. It is worth doing anything you can to alleviate these problems, and for shading you should prune back shrubs which overhang the lawn or have trees professionally crown thinned or lifted, so that more light gets through to the lawn. Herbaceous plants are easily dealt with by using bamboo canes and string to ease them up and away from the grass. Compaction is relatively easy to deal with, and in small areas where the problem is not too bad, you can use a normal garden fork. Drive this into the lawn every 10 – 15 cm (4 – 6 in) and ease it back and forth slightly to enlarge the holes created by the tines of the fork. This creates some drainage channels, which will also improve aeration. On very heavy sites or where compaction is bad, use a hollow tine aerator. These can be bought as attachments for some lawnmowers, or you can buy or hire a dedicated machine or piece of equipment. A hollow tine aerator removes cylinders of turf and the soil beneath, thus producing a better effect than using a garden fork. Once aerated, brush a sandy top dressing mixture into all the holes, using a mixture of sieved garden soil and horticultural sand, perhaps mixed with a small quantity of sieved leaf mould. The top dressing ensures that the holes are kept open to allow better drainage and aeration over a longer period. Use a proprietary moss killer if moss is really out of control, applied exactly according to the manufacturer’s instructions; you should make sure that the moss is killed off completely before you attempt to rake it out. Raking out can be combined with scarifying, where you use a spring tined rake to aggressively rake the surface of the lawn, so that dead moss, thatch (the accumulated bits of dead grass and other lawn debris) and any other surface debris are removed. Once done, you will find

44

that the lawn looks a lot worse than it did when you started, as it will look thinner and more moth-eaten. However, scarifying helps to ensure that the grasses receive plenty of air and allows for better re-growth; have faith, the situation will improve. If you still have bare areas once you have improved the texture of the soil and fixed drainage problems, then reseed or over-seed using a suitable grass-seed mixture. To improve germination and speed of growth, pin a piece of horticultural fleece or Enviromesh over the newly sown area. This will help keep it warmer and prevent birds from stealing the grass seed. Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood.com for vegetable plants, Nemaslug, mesh and fleece, Speed Hoes, Speed Weeders, SoftTie, pop-up crop covers , copper tape and lots more besides.

Charity Fighting for Vicky by Ian Wetherall After getting a place on the Prudential RideLondon 100 I decided to take the opportunity to raise some money for a well earned cause, SARCOMA UK on behalf of Vicky Molteni. After being diagnosed with a retroperitaneal liposarcoma in June 2013, Vicky had a laparotomy in July 2013 to remove a melon-sized tumour in her abdomen. Unfortunately it grew back all too quickly, and by Nov 2013 Vicky was told that her average life expectancy would be less than twelve months. By may 2015 Vicky continued to fight the cancer beyond all expectations and it was then that Sam and I started the #fightingforvicky campaign to raise awareness for Sarcoma Uk as Vicky was very passionate about it. So far we have raised over £3500 for the charity

and will continue to do so in Vicky’s memory. In June Vicky was taken to The Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice in Farnham where she took advantage of its wonderful services. She was adamant still that she’d see me cycle over that finish line on August 2nd. Sadly on July 27th 2015, a week before Ride London 100 Vicky passed away peacefully in her sleep. The #fightingforvicky campagin will continue in Vicky’s memory. Follow the fight on twitter @Fighting4vicky What is Sarcoma? SARCOMA is a rare type of cancer which develops in the muscle, bone, nerves, cartilage, tendons, blood vessels and the fatty and fibrous tissues. SARCOMAs make up 1% of all cancer diagnoses in the Uk. Ian’s donation page is www.virginmoneygiving.com/ chewierides100

Recipe Potato tortilla with marinated olives This Spanish baked omelette is great served warm as a speedy supper or is just as tasty served cold. Perfect for a late summer picnic served with a bowl of garlicky marinated olives. Serves 4 Ready in 45 minutes, plus marinating time FOR THE MARINATED OLIVES 100ml olive oil ½ red chilli pepper, deseeded and very finely chopped 2 garlic cloves, peeled and finely chopped 1 tbsp fresh chopped parsley 1 tsp lemon zest 150g Kalamata olives 150g large green olives FOR THE TORTILLA 450g potatoes, peeled and thickly sliced 6 large eggs 1 garlic clove, peeled and crushed 10ml (2tsp) dried Italian mixed herbs 50g mature Cheddar cheese, grated Rocket leaves, to serve 1 To marinate the olives, heat the oil, chilli and garlic in a small pan until just warmed through. Stir in the parsley, lemon zest and olives and season with freshly ground black pepper. Transfer to a heatproof bowl and cover and leave to marinate in a cool place for a few hours or overnight. 2 To make the tortilla, preheat the oven to 180C/350F/ Gas Mark 4. Grease a 19cm x 23cm shallow cake tin. 3 Cook the potatoes in a large pan of boiling salted water for 3-4 minutes until almost tender. Drain well and arrange in 2-3 layers in the cake tin. 4 Beat together the eggs and garlic in a bowl then add the dried mixed herbs and two thirds of the grated cheese. Season well with salt and freshly ground black pepper and pour the mixture over the layered potatoes. 5 Sprinkle over the rest of the cheese. Bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown and firm to the touch. Cool for 10 minutes then cut into wedges. Serve warm with rocket leaves and the marinated olives.

TIP If serving the tortilla cold, allow to cool completely then cut into squares and wrap in greaseproof paper. It will keep in the fridge for 24 hours.

Hobbies Astronomy: a hobby that’s (literally) out of this world By Kate McLelland

The spectacular appearance of the Perseid meteor shower, every year in high summer, is an event that demonstrates just how exciting watching the night sky can be. The Perseid shower is a stream of space dust and particles that flows behind the rather unromantically named Swift-Tuttle comet. It forms a glittering procession of meteors - up to 60 per hour - coming from the direction of the constellation of Perseus in the northern hemisphere. Under the right weather conditions, and especially in the hours before dawn, this glorious phenomenon can be easily viewed with the naked eye. Make the effort to get up early to watch this natural light show and you’ll have a good introduction to astronomy. Studying the stars and planets can be an incredibly rewarding hobby, whether you are a beginner, observing with the naked eye, or a tech-lover equipped with a substantial telescope and accessories such as a CCD (charge-coupled device) camera for capturing those night-sky panoramas. It’s one of the few hobbies where amateurs can even contribute to scientific research, simply by observing and recording what they see. One example is the American “Target Asteroids!” Project, which was designed to collect information about asteroids approaching the earth. First steps As an amateur astronomer you’ll need to become thoroughly familiar with the night sky: understanding how it changes, not just throughout the hours of a single night, but season by season, and even when viewed from different latitudes. A monthly sky guide can help you learn about the changes to look out for, or alternatively you might prefer to visit a planetarium, where you can lean back and view the complex movements of the heavens from the comfort of a padded chair! Most beginners will be tempted to buy a telescope, but remember if you live in an urban area where there is light pollution it’s unlikely you will get a clear view of the night sky, however powerful your telescope may be. The size and quality of the lens is important, but be warned: many of the instruments sold by non-specialist shops

56

are simply not up to the job. Jodrell Bank has published a page of advice on its website (www.jb.man.ac.uk), advising beginners to join a local astronomical society in order to experiment with different types of telescope before deciding on which type to purchase. They go on to explain “[telescopes] will not, in general, provide you with the wonderful images that you see in the magazines - often taken by spacecraft or the Hubble Space Telescope - which do not have to contend with the blurring effects of the Earth’s atmosphere.” The views of space you can expect with a standard telescope may not match those Hubble shots but with a little effort you should be able to see the rich detail on the Moon’s surface, the rings of Saturn and the planet Jupiter’s surface contours, together with its four larger moons. Once you become more familiar with the night sky you may also be able to locate and view galaxies and star clusters with your telescope. Learning about astronomy There are many online sources of information, books and software packages to help you get to grips with this vast subject: a list of publications is available from the Royal Astronomical Society’s website (www.ras.org.uk). If you want to make a serious study of astronomy, there are a number of distance learning courses that you can choose from. The Open University offers a certificate in “Astronomy and Planetary Science”, which provides a basic introduction that can be studied in separate modules: see the OU website at www.open.ac.uk for more information and costs. Alternatively Liverpool John Moores University offers short courses for under £200 (see www.astronomy.ac.uk). Joining the astro community Astronomy is fun, but it can be even more enjoyable when you link up with others. At your local astronomy club you’ll find like-minded people keen to share their knowledge with you. By joining a club you’ll have opportunities to try out new equipment, learn new

skills and techniques and make friends who share your passion for the night sky. The British Astronomical Association has supported amateur astrologers since 1890 and on their website (www.britastro.org) you can chat to other enthusiasts via BAA’s online forums or find out about meetings and events taking place all over the country. Astronomy Clubs UK (www.astronomyclubs.co.uk) is also a fantastic resource where you can search for a local club, find blogs and podcasts or search out places to visit. Astrobiology Astronomy isn’t a static subject – it’s constantly growing and changing in response to new discoveries and new scientific directions. One of the most recent branches of astronomy is ‘Astrobiology’, a brand new field of science that covers the origins and limits of life of earth and asks where life might exist beyond the earth. Whether you’re interested in how the universe was formed, the movements of the planets or the prospect of meeting an alien life form, astronomy is a fascinating and far-ranging topic. It’s a hobby that’s literally out of this world, and there’s no better place to start than in your own (suitably dark) back yard.

Clubs Emanuel Lions by Grace Mansfield Age 14

You probably have the assumption that boys are the ones that play rugby, but girls do too. At Emanuel we have both the Lions’ and the Lionesses’ teams. My sister, Rose, and I are both members of the Lionesses’ team. (My brother, William, also plays at the club.) I have been part of the team for six years (this will be my 8th year with the club). Because of the number of girls playing at the club, the girls’ team was created in 2010. In the past five years we have represented Kingston borough in the London Youth Games four times, winning gold in 2011 and bronze in 2014. We also regularly participate in Surrey RFU ‘Pitch up and Play’ events, involving girls from other clubs, training with different coaches and playing friendly matches. We also put girls forward to county level: last year five girls from the club were asked to join the Surrey team including myself. This season the Lionesses have a partnership with London Scottish to help us enter in more competitions. Training for both girls and boys is every week on Sunday
