Apparently if you are full of the joys of spring, then you are very happy and full of energy. Not sure I’ve quite got the bug yet and definitely feel like I need a battery recharge after the Easter holidays. The weather just isn’t helping. If the gloomy forecasts are to be believed then there’ll be even more rain to keep our water buts topped up. An uncertain few months for gardeners – the record temperatures of March are a bit of a distant memory. I am a very inexperienced gardener who ordered a ridiculous number of plug plants online which seem to be arriving daily and I am finding it difficult to keep up with potting them and knowing which to pinch and when – a lot more complicated than I’d imagined! Let’s hope temperatures improve and that late frosts have been and gone. In this edition we’re promoting lots of forthcoming events. As well as school summer fairs and reunions in New Malden itself there’s also lots going on a short journey away – the Epsom Derby and various Jubilee celebrations in Kingston – remember, if you’d like to promote a local event then it’s free to submit a listing for our What’s On section. Just email me. More great readers offers this month from some of our advertisers. School Summer Fairs Teachers, pupils and parents at New Malden’s Christ Church Primary School are getting ready for a 2012 Diamond extravaganza next month (Saturday May 12th), with plans well underway for this year’s special, Jubilee fair! The gates will be opened (by two people you may recognise!) at 12 noon. Money raised will help to fund a range of extra outdoor facilities for the children, such as new playground benches, sports and play equipment. Miss Tabitha White, who joined the school as its new Head teacher in January of this year, says:

“Our Diamond Jubilee fair will once more be the flagship event in the school’s fundraising calendar – and will allow parents, friends and members of the local community to come and get into the spirit of national celebration in the lead up to the official events in June. “We are so lucky to have such wonderful support from our children’s parents, grandparents and carers and we really hope this year’s theme will appeal to all ages. “I’m especially looking forward to attending this exciting event in my first year as the Head of Christ Church Primary as I’ve already heard so much about it and have been told to expect a really fun day. I can’t wait to see such an array of entertainment, including our school country dancers, singers, musicians and even a performance from our new

adult Christ Church Community Choir!” As ever, the Christ Church Primary School Fair will offer a huge range of fun activities for people to watch and take part in. However, for the first time, some exciting new sideshows will be on offer for kids (and big kids!) of all ages. These will include a giant inflatable ‘surf board simulator’ and a huge ‘hammer strike’ challenge. Parents from the school will also be hosting a large international food hall, with freshly cooked Indian and Korean meals on offer. One of the highlights of the day promises to be the Jubilee Tea Room, where visitors will be able to sit down in beautifully decorated red, white and blue surroundings and enjoy tea, coffee and a selection of cakes. In keeping with the theme, there will also be a 1952 ‘memory room’, an opportunity for children to write a message of congratulations to the Queen and a treasure hunt around the school grounds where prizes will be hidden behind 60 large “diamonds”! Pupils aged from 4 – 10 have been invited to design Jubilee posters to help promote the fair, so organisers hope that readers of the Village will enjoy spotting them as they brighten up the windows of shops, cars and houses right across New Malden!

Come and join in the madness at Corpus Christi Primary School’s ‘Mad Hatter’s Tea Party Summer Fair’ on Saturday, 23rd June. Entrance is FREE for children and just £1 for adults. The event will be held at the school in Chestnut Grove, New Malden, between 12 – 4pm. We will be going down the rabbit hole with a ‘Mad Hat’ competition and a parade to showcase the children’s creations. Search for a White Rabbit or a March Hare at our Children’s Petting Farm and enjoy the Wonderland Bouncy Castle Extravaganza - three bouncy castles for the price of one! Other stalls include all the usual favourites such as Tombolas, Beat the Goalie, Face Painting and a Toy and Book Stall. There will also be a toddler area and regular storytime slots in The Dormouse Teapot Story Corner. Enjoy a cuppa at The Queen of Hearts Vintage Tea Shop serving cup cakes, cream teas and hot and cold drinks. Other tasty food available includes our delicious Korean stall and the BBQ, which will be serving up burgers and hotdogs. In preparation for Wimbledon Fortnight, strawberries and cream will be on sale along with Pimms from the Beer Tent, and there will even be a signed Roger Federer T-Shirt up for grabs. VVoice

Jubilations (Part 2) Fields of fun by Robin Gill

The first national celebration of a British monarch’s jubilee was not for Victoria, but her grandfather George III on 25th October 1809. He had come to the throne on 25th October 1760, and celebrated his golden jubilee at the start of the 50th year of his reign. A large celebratory dinner was held in Kingston’s old town hall (subsequently pulled down circa 1840) for invited guests, where the King’s health was proposed in a toast by the Recorder Thomas Evance. The toast was drunk nine times (three times three) as a cannon was fired. The ordinary townspeople had built a bonfire in the Market Square, and enjoyed three barrels of beer which had been provided for the occasion. Apathy to acclamation Queen Victoria’s Silver Jubilee in 1862 was not celebrated, as it occurred too soon after the death of her husband Albert the previous year. But,

by the time of Victoria’s Golden Jubilee in 1887, New Malden was well established and able to organise its own celebrations. At least, that was the general idea. But after a series of badly attended meetings had been held in the village, and a fallout occurred between the teetotallers and others in the community, the disheartened organising committee resigned en masse. It was left to the Church Sunday Schools, and the local Foresters Court (now Foresters Friendly Society) to arrange events for June 28th. That day, the local churches held early thanksgiving services at 8.30am, so that people who wanted to travel to London (to see the royal procession) were able to catch the 9.38 morning train. The children of the village gathered at their schools where they were given a specially minted medal, and a coloured rosette to wear designating which school they attended. They then proceeded to a field near Christ Church, and at 2pm walked in procession to Malden College. There they enjoyed sports and games. Meanwhile, the Foresters had arranged a “grand fete and gala” starting at 2pm in a field facing the coffee tavern (now Tudor Williams). There, the villagers took part in handicap races, tug of war, and cricket. Entertainment came from the Kingston Hill Brass Band, and afterwards the “aged poor” were given tea, and everyone enjoyed dancing during the evening. Around the churches Ten years later (1897) when Victoria celebrated her Diamond Jubilee, there was still £5 left over from the children’s celebration the previous decade. This formed a basis for a village fete to be held. On the Sunday, special thanksgiving services were held in all the churches of the district. At Christ Church, the service was led by the Rev Challacombe and the Rev Cave-Moyles, while music was provided by Charles Davis’s String Band who played both the Coronation Anthem (Handel), and the Coronation March (Meyerbeer). At the Congregational Church (now URC), the services were led by the Rev Mannington and the Rev Davies and during the course of the service, the Jubilee Anthem was sung. At the Baptist Church, the service was led by the Rev Moore, and prominent members of the local community gave their reflections on the occasion. Services were also held at the Wesleyan Chapel in Cambridge Road, the mission room in Kingston Road (now St Johns), and the Holy Trinity Free Church (Graham Spicer). Community celebrations On Jubilee Day, New Malden was decorated with flags hanging across the Market Place with similar

decorations in Grafton and Cambridge Roads. Standing out particularly among the decorated shops were William Sudbury’s ironmongers, the Post Office owned by Fred Hawkins, and John Giblett’s butchers. The local dairy had flowers in the window, and was “tastefully lit” in the evening. Frank Berry had decorated his bicycle shop in red white and blue, and in Coombe Road, Charlie Andrews the corn merchant, Mrs Moores bakery, and Edward Clarke’s greengrocers looked very pretty. Further up the road the drapers shop of William Norburn was covered with fairy lights and bunting. Flags were flying from the top of Malden College, and the local pubs (Norbiton Park Hotel and Railway Hotel) were decorated with flowers, and gas filled ornaments. The residents also put on a show; the chairman of the local board Frederick Merryweather who lived in the only house in Sandal Road (St Cuthberts) displayed lamps, Chinese lanterns, flags, and flowers. The local doctor George Cowen, who lived in a large property in Malden Road, had the letters VR in oil lamps together with a chain of Japanese lanterns hanging from his house to the other side of the road. Nearly a thousand children assembled at the top of Grafton Road just before 2pm and marched carrying flags and banners to the field in Westbury Road, where

the fete was being held. The field usually used by the Church Lads Brigade, had been lent for the occasion by John Lavender of Norbiton Common Farm. The fete which was mainly for the children, attracted people of all ages, and included swings and sports i.e. cocoanut bowling (not easy). At 3pm the Maldens and Coombe Brass band under the direction of local teacher Arthur Timbers, began playing to entertain the crowds. Tea was provided at 4.30pm by Walter Chaney who ran a cake shop in London Road Kingston, and afterwards a cricket match was played between fifteen girls with bats, and eleven boys with brooms, which the girls won by a single run. After the finals of the sports and the distribution of the prizes with thanks all round, the event was rounded off with the singing of the National Anthem by all those present. Later in the day, there was a great bonfire on Mount Pleasant and fireworks. Not to be outdone, the inhabitants of Old Malden celebrated the jubilee the following Saturday. Flags and decorations ran the whole length of Church Road from the Plough to St Johns, with some of the houses decorated with fairy lamps. The celebrations started with a cricket match between Malden and Worcester Park CC, and a local team captained by Edward Chetwynd-Stapylton the son of the former vicar. The latter team won, but the cricket club gained their

ended with fireworks and a large bonfire shaped like a house containing barrels of tar. This allowed a mock alarm to be raised. The Maldens and Coombe Fire Brigade (who were in attendance) quickly had the blaze under control and performed a staged rescue of one of their number, (who was dressed as a woman) from the top window of the “building”.

revenge when they were successful in the tug of war match against the same opponents later in the day. In the farmer’s field next to the church, nearly two hundred children took part in various sports, before sitting down to tea at four o’clock in a large marquee. Here they were entertained by a Punch and Judy show, and music from the New Malden Military Band. Just before 6pm one of the oldest inhabitants of the area Charles William Smith planted a Holme Oak at the western end of the church to commemorate the occasion. (Sadly a recent expedition to find this tree was unsuccessful). Following this, the 230 adults present sat down to supper provided by Henry Packhams of Surbiton. Races in the evening were followed by the prize giving by Miss Wheeler of Worcester Park House. The event

Looking forward It seems that royal occasions like these allowed the community to “come together”. In Victorian times, there was no shortage of open spaces in which to hold events, and certainly no shortage of musicians to keep the public entertained, and provide music for dancing. Nowadays, Malden has its Malden Fortnight (30th June – 15th July) and a Party in the (Beverley) Park on 2nd June keeping the tradition alive. Illustrations 1) Old Town Hall in Kingston Market Place. 2) Victoria Golden Jubilee Medal 1887. 3) Meadow near St John’s Old Malden. Next month I want to cover the jubilee celebrations of 1935,1977, and 2002 in Malden, so if anyone has any memories from 1977 or even 1935 about local celebrations, I would love to hear from them. View from the city

Too many business initiatives and acronyms around in the world of finance? Justin Urquhart Stewart shares his thoughts

Feeding the Dragon The Year of the Water Dragon, whilst normally providing good joss for those followers of Chinese astrology, is also proving to be a challenging one on various fronts. Not only is there the change of leadership to be managed, much of which of course will be carried below the surface of the water (useful for a water dragon), but also there is a fundamental change in the economic environment. With overseas demand for Chinese goods falling, where is new demand to come from? If this is to be internally driven then how is this going to be managed through, with a Chinese banking system that is already under some considerable pressure? Then there are the social issues of domestic inflation, pressure for jobs and the related levels of unemployment. To this we can also add the level of social unrest between locals and transitory workers, with some flaring into

16

riots and most notably the remarkable ‘rebellion’ in the village of Wukan which played out like an oriental version of ‘Passport to Pimlico’. Add to this the strikes and demonstrations in certain factories for higher pay, some of which has resulted in even certain manufacturing companies leaving the country to find other lower cost sites. The days of the ‘China Price’ are seemingly now over. Additionally, the balance of the population has changed for the first time in several thousand years – more Chinese now live in the burgeoning cities than in the country. So who is going to feed the populace? The figures are staggering. China has to feed 20% of the world’s population and has only 8% of the world’s available arable land. To further exacerbate this, as incomes have risen so has the demand for better diets away from water, rice and vegetables, to more meat and cooking oil for frying. So the demand for palm oil as well as wheat and corn has risen substantially. As yet the Chinese do not allow the use of genetically modified grains, although this may change over the next few years. China now accounts for 20% of global corn consumption. Seemingly China’s corn imports in January and February this year totalled 1.26m tonnes – four hundred times more than the same time last year! This may have been somewhat distorted as traders were taking advantage of record levels of Chinese corn prices being amongst the highest in the world and were importing overseas supplies to sell at a quick profit. Thus it will be interesting to see if this eases off over the next few months. However, it does mean though that fundamentally the Chinese economy is changing and the

Please remember to mention the Village Voice when you speak to our advertisers

increased demand for food products is going to increase; any weather interruption elsewhere in the world will have a disproportionate price impact in China. Is the US less than it was and will be even less in the future? Some interesting figures have crossed my desk regarding the relative decline in the value of the US economy. In the year 2000, the US accounted for approximately a third of the global economy: today it accounts for less than a quarter. If this continues and the BRICS along with Indonesia and Turkey don’t come to a grinding halt, then this could drop to around a sixth. With the recent discussions around the Buffett Tax, it is also worth reminding ourselves about the strains of the US middle class who seem to be under increasing pressure. For the income gains in 2010, the top 1% of earners gained 93% of the value and the remaining 99% were either seeing no increase or in fact seeing falling incomes. That is a squeezed middle. The great strength of the US economy has been its ability to reinvent itself in times of stress. The question is can it do it again when faced with the twin headed hellhound Orthrus of the deficit and the debt? This of course won’t be really addressed until post the election, but in the meantime is there enough economic momentum to sustain the recovery? All is likely to depend upon the level of corporate confidence, and the next wave of corporate results this week could help us here. VVoice

Even before we started up Groves Residential I used to enjoy reading the Village Voice magazine on a monthly basis and when we opened in 2010, we felt there was no better way of getting our name out to the community. We have always been very pleased with response to the advertising and also the help and professionalism provided by Jenny. We are always careful to monitor the source of our enquiries and we know it gets results and is read by thousands of local residents every month. Niki McGibbon Groves Residential

On Friday 1st June from 6-9pm, there will be a Campfire burning in New Malden and you are all invited! Seasonal Recipe Asparagus Frittata For those who’ve only ever considered asparagus as a luxurious accompaniment to a main course, it’s time to think again. This delicious recipe is simple to cook and the mild flavours of the mozzarella and eggs mean that the asparagus is still the star of the dish. • 275g new potatoes • 450g asparagus • 5 large eggs • 200g buffalo mozzarella • 50g Parmesan, grated • 2 tbsp chopped flat leaf parsley • 2 tbsp olive oil • Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper Preheat the oven to 200°C/gas mark 6. Making sure the potatoes are clean first, boil them in salted water. Trim the asparagus, then cut the stems into 1cm slices leaving the spear as a piece about 8cm long. Add this all to the potato pan for the last 5 minutes of the cooking time.

Drain everything and refresh in cold water. Thickly slice the potato. Whisk together the eggs really well. Dice the mozzarella and add to the eggs along with 40g of the Parmesan, the parsley, potatoes and slices of asparagus. Season generously with sea salt and freshly ground pepper. Stir everything to coat with the egg. Lastly, gently stir through the spears. Heat a 22cm diameter ovenproof deep frying pan along with the olive oil over a medium heat. Non-stick would be great, otherwise one which is naturally seasoned. Pour in the egg mixture making sure some of the spears are sitting at the top. Leave to cook for around 10 minutes until the edges are starting to firm up. Sprinkle over the last 10g of Parmesan and slide the frying pan in to the oven. Bake for 8-10 minutes until the frittata is golden and firm. Serve straight from the pan with a crisp green salad.

Party in the park Cool Britannia is back…and the flags will be flying in Beverley Park on Saturday 2 June! By royal approval (well, The Royal Borough of Kingston!) the residents (and friends) of the Beverley Park area have once again been granted permission to hold a ‘street party’ in the grounds of BP (that’s Beverley Park, not Buckingham Palace!) - this time to officially celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. Obviously throughout the whole of the extended Bank Holiday weekend in June, there will be street parties and community lunches taking place across New Malden, Kingston and rest of the UK. But, what better way to get together with a huge range of friends of neighbours (and without causing any disruption to the flow of New Malden’s traffic system!) than to pack up a picnic and head to a mass, all-inclusive party in our beautiful park!

After the success of the Royal Wedding celebrations last year, many residents of New Malden could be heard asking, “when can we do it again?” So, the answer’s simple - all you need to do is bring a picnic, drinks, gazebos, bunting, a football etc (and of course of plastic bag to make it easy to take all your rubbish away with you at the end of the day) anytime from 1pm on Saturday 2 June. Games & music will be organised throughout the day – (shame we can’t organise the weather too!) For more info, please drop an email to: jo.hudson@trinitypr.co.uk Or, for more information and inspiration about holding a street party and getting into the community spirit in 2012, then why not log ontowww.thebiglunch.com (a nationwide campaign to “get as many people as possible across the whole of the UK to have lunch with their neighbours in a simple act of community, friendship and fun”) LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING YOU ALL THERE! Keeping Pests at Bay - the Natural Way by Pippa Greenwood More and more people have become concerned about using chemicals in the garden, with some gardeners having used chemicals rarely, if at all, for years. Perhaps you are concerned about wildlife and conservation, or using pesticides on plants that children or pets might play near, or that you intend to eat. Greener gardening is not difficult, it is just different. Many infuriating pests can thrive in greenhouses and conservatories, but there are now many ‘natural’ controls available in the form of predators and parasites, which can be purchased from mail order suppliers (including www.pippagreenwood.com) and then released indoors. These insects or mites do a great job of keeping common pests at bay, including whitefly, red spider mite and mealy bugs. There are also excellent controls available for slugs and for vine weevils, both of which can be used successfully outside too. Other outdoor pests which can be controlled include leather jackets and chafer grubs and there is even a control to send ants off in the other direction – wonderful if you like to lie on the lawn or enjoy meals in your garden without being nipped! I garden organically and use biological controls regularly. If your conservatory is also a place where you relax or enjoy a drink or a meal, it is especially important not to fill it with potentially harmful chemicals. To use these controls you will need to make sure that your greenhouse or conservatory is not already packed full of chemical residues - otherwise they may kill the beneficial creatures you are introducing. For whitefly you need a tiny parasitic wasp called Encarsia and for red spider mite you need the predatory Phytoseiulus mite. Introduce these amongst infested plants and they will automatically search out the pests, soon getting their numbers under control without you having to lift a finger. It may sound off-putting to release wasps or mites indoors but these little creatures are tiny and will not bite or sting: they are only interested in the pests. Biological controls are tricky for garden centres to stock, as living creatures won’t survive if left sitting on

42

a warm shelf. Mail order is therefore the best way to buy generally, with your predators or parasites arriving in the post, along with strict instructions for storage and using before the use-by date. But don’t let this put you off: biological controls are excellent and used by professional growers. To ensure success you must follow the instructions precisely and make sure you introduce the control when there are only a few pests around. If the air is choked with whitefly it can be a bit too much of an uphill struggle for the tiny little wasps. But the great thing is that you can relax in the knowledge that you’re not jeopardising any wildlife and that, in many cases, the biological control becomes self-perpetuating as the ‘critters’ you have bought breed and spread. Now that’s what I call useful. Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood.com and sign up for her newsletter (and receive a free ebook on organic gardening) and shop from the new products area which offers a great selection of biological controls (for slugs, vine weevils, red spider mite, whitefly etc) plus growing frames, cloches, raised bed kits and lots, lots more.

The Holy Cross School, New Malden celebrates its 80th Anniversary In 1881 a house called “Southesk” was built in Sandal Road. It was surrounded by fields. The first occupants were the Austine Family. They had 3 children: Beatrice (15), Alice (12) and Henry (13), and Eliza who was a servant. Over the front door there is a Latin inscription, which in English says, “this is the house that John built” – John was Mr Austine’s first name. In 1931 the last of the Austine family had died and the Sisters of the Holy Cross bought “Southesk” from Mr Thomas, the solicitor who was dealing with the estate. The Sisters of the Holy Cross already had a Convent and School in West Wimbledon. The Bishop (Amigo) asked them to start another School in New Malden. Sr Christina, and two other Sisters moved into the house in June 1931. On 23rd September 1931 Holy Cross Convent School was opened with 5 Students. Above excerpt taken from ‘History of the School’, a piece written by Sr Margaret which features in the ‘Memories of Holy Cross Book’ produced for 75th Anniversary of the school in 2007. Copies are available from the school. Over the years the school has grown and more buildings have been added, but the original house front, with minor alterations, still remains as the main entrance to the school. The school is holding an 80th Anniversary Reunion on Saturday 12th May 2012 from 1.15pm to 6pm and all past pupils and staff are welcome to attend. It will be a chance for you to catch up with old friends, tour the school and attend the Thanksgiving Mass. For this special occasion there will also be a Grand Raffle to raise money for the work that the Holy Cross Sisters do for children in the Karnataka State in India. If you are a past pupil and you have any photos, memorabilia etc that you would like to share with us please email it

Cider Drinking in May I have decided to designate May as National Cider Month. And since, as far as I know, there is no statutory board for designating such things as National Sausage Week (which actually exists) and National Athlete’s Foot Day (which thankfully doesn’t), my National Cider Month is as formal and official as any other example of this sort of public relations hokum. So there. But why am I designating May as National Cider Month when there is already (perhaps unbeknownst to most of you) a perfectly good National Cider Month, run under the auspices of the Campaign for Real Ale in October?

Because October is silly, that’s why. But, why have a National Cider Month at all? Can’t cider look after itself, without my intervention? Well, the Bulmers, the Gaymers and the Magners of this world with their mass distribution and big advertising budgets don’t need my help and jolly well aren’t getting it. But if you think that’s all there is to cider then you’re in for a treat. Unless you’re lucky enough to live in the western counties, you’ll be extremely lucky to find what a traditionalist would call a “real” cider on the handpumps at your local pub. Most large towns – although by no means all – have an outlet for Weston’s excellent draught cider from Much Marcle in Herefordshire. But good though Weston’s is, it’s hardly a representative selection of what the country’s estimated 4-500 independent cidermakers have to offer. But what is “traditional” cider? Basically it’s just pure fresh-pressed apple juice slowly fermented over the winter – apple wine, in fact. Any apple juice will ferment, but most of the best ciders are fermented from blends of the two or three hundred varieties of cider apple – small, hard, inedible little things, for the most part, and sour with tannin which acts as a strong antibacterial agent and gives the finished cider an oaky depth. These traditional ciders range from the roughest farmhouse scrumpies, which often have an almost vinegary acidity, to drinks as subtle, sophisticated, and elegant as fine white wine. And then there’s perry, a superb drink that’s almost impossible to obtain thanks to the rarity of the pears from which it’s made... Traditional cider is almost always still (not flat) rather than sparkling. Left to itself it will ferment to complete dryness, and to a strength of 6-8% alcohol by volume, and the carbon dioxide generated during fermentation will dissipate naturally. If you want it sparkling you have to deliberately reintroduce some CO2, either by pitching the cider with a little yeast and sugar to stir a mild refermentation or, 99.99 times out of a hundred, by fizzing it up artificially. I do everything I can to introduce people to the delights of traditional cider, and that’s why I’m designating May as National Cider Month. October was chosen for the honour because that’s when apples are generally harvested. But cider needs to be fermented slowly and carefully, to allow the harsh malic acid to turn into the smoother and more mellow lactic acid – the so-called malo-lactic fermentation. Last season’s crop should be ready to drink right about now. There are cidermakers all over the country these days, not just in Devon, Somerset and Herefordshire but in Norfolk, Suffolk, Kent, Essex, Surrey, Sussex, Berkshire, Oxfordshire, Northamptonshire, Cheshire, even Yorkshire and Scotland! So seek out your nearest, invest in a few bottles, and celebrate with me.

Safer Neighbourhoods by Sgt Nick Ellis Dear Local Resident, I thought you might be interested in a run through of some of the initiatives recently set up by Met Police. Following on from my last article on safeguarding your bikes, I am pleased to announce that there is going to be a major campaign with the Royal Borough of Kingston and Kingston First to further educate all bike owners on theft prevention. This launches in June and involves bike marking events and Dr Bike visits. We are pleased to have the help of the Safer Transport Task force and, together, we aim to decrease this opportunist theft. You may also be aware that Safer Neighbourhood teams have been supported by RBK staff and specialist police units in mounting ‘days of action’ entitled Operation Tenpin designed to address local ward concerns. St James and Old Malden’s turn was on March 21. This Tenpin operation, which focused on ward priority concerns of burglary, theft from, and

issues relating to, motor vehicles and local graffiti was the seventh since July 2011 and further events are planned until the end of the year. Thus far no crime has been reported on any ward during the hours of the Operation. The Old Malden and St James Safer Neighbourhood Teams, headed by Sergeant Rob Baker, backed by my team from Beverley, and SNTs from Grove, St Marks, and Surbiton Hill wards, as well as Council teams from traffic enforcement, were all involved. We visited one local address and made an arrest relating to the possession of cannabis, two cars were stopped during an ‘Automated Number Plate Reader’ operation for document offences, and three arrests were made on suspicion of theft of petrol and handling stolen goods. Over seventy residents visited the teams’ advice stall at the United Reformed Church, Malden Road. High visibility burglary patrols between 9 and 4pm, in addition to offering home security advice, saw three people stopped and asked to account for their presence in the area. A series of knife sweeps resulted in one knife found at the rear of McDonalds, New Malden. In addition bus routes were covered between the Fountain Roundabout and Worcester Park Train Station, a beggar spoken to, and a pedal cycle seized to confirm the ownership of the bike. No major issues were reported relating to the five licensed premises visited. As warmer weather approaches can I remind you to give some thought to a few simple tips to help safeguard your home. While the chances of being burgled in this area are statistically low we know that being burgled can be a distressing experience. While we are taking action to target and arrest those responsible, we remind home owners to take some simple measures which can further reduce the chance of you becoming a victim of burglary. Most burglaries tend to be opportunistic rather than planned. So if your home does not look secure, seems unlived in, or provides unobserved access, it could be at risk. Understanding what burglars look for when choosing their target will help you identify weak spots in your home's security. Our 10 Top Tips: •Mark or etch your property with your postcode, house or flat number or the first three letters of your house name. • Register items with a serial number at: www. immobilise.com • Do not leave your car keys or ID documents near doors, letterbox or windows.

• Always check who’s at the door and don’t open it if you feel anxious. • Close and lock all your doors and windows, even if you are only going out for a few minutes. • Keep your valuables out of sight. • Leave some lights on if it will be dark before you get home. • Install a visible burglar alarm. • Always keep sheds and outbuildings locked. • Cancel milk or other deliveries if you will be away for days or weeks at a time. For more advice and information please visit www. met.police.uk/crimeprevention/burglary or contact your local Safer Neighbourhoods team by visiting www.met.police.uk or by calling 101." Have a good May and I look forward to welcoming as many residents as possible to our Beverley and Coombe Vale Wards drop ins on 2nd May from 2 4pm and the 16th May from 10.30am - 12.30pm at the Methodist Church on the High Street. St James ward has a meeting from 4.30 to 5.30pm on May 18 in Rodney Close. Details are on our websites . Nicholas ELLIS PS 46VK Beverley Safer Neighbourhoods Team VVoice
