Welcome to our November edition Dear All,

I am delighted that this month we have The The Rose Theatre, Richmond Theatre and the Polka Theatre all advertising their Christmas Productions. If you’re looking for inspiration for Christmas presents then look no further than the trusty Outing Present to maybe one of these productions. For the past few years we’ve bought the children for Christmas theatre or day out tickets – I love the fact that it’s something to look forward to once the wrapping paper is off , and there’s no chance of it getting broken on Christmas Day! Between us, and Father Christmas, they’ve had tickets to Harry Potter Studios, Shrek the Musical and Cadbury World all of which have been very memorable family outings. I even managed to wrap up an Easter trip to see my brother and his family last year and they had to unwrap clues spelling out where we were going A-D-I-U-B. Very frustrating 10 minutes watching them and 2 grandparents trying to work out this anagram for this amazing holiday! We’ve also enjoyed annual membership to RHS Wisley and a few other places courtesy

Christmas Lights

Friday 29th Nov from 4.45pm Father Christmas is making his annual visit to turn on our Christmas lights in New Malden High Street with the help of the Malden Fortnight Committee and Rotary Club. There’ll be music from 4.45pm courtesy of Christ Church New Malden Primary choirs, and also Borough Brass. The parade will come down the High Street at 5.30pm and make it’s way to Georges Square where Father Christmas will make himself at home in our new grotto and give out toys to children. Burlington Junior School Chamber Choir will be singing while you wait, and the Lunchbowl Network will be selling affordable burgers and sausages from a BBQ in the Square. Food and drinks also available at the Methodist Church Fair. For more details of this and other Christmas Fairs see our What’s On pages.

Santa After-Party

If you feel like the great fun on offer down New Malden High Street when the lights are switched on is over too quickly, after you’ve collected your present from Santa, why not come along and continue the festivities at the Santa After-Party! The party will be held on Friday 29th November, after the lights have been switched on in New Malden. It will be in the Lounge at Christ Church New Malden and will consist of a brilliant Christmas family favourite, Elf, for both parents and children of all ages to enjoy! Tickets cost £5 for children which includes entrance and a goodie bag, containing popcorn, sweets and a drink, to enjoy during the film. Accompanying adults are £1 who won’t get a goodie bag but additionally, on sale will be hot drinks and the option of a delicious pasta dish for those without time for dinner or who haven’t been tempted by the Lunchbowl Network’s BBQ that will take place in St George’s Square! All proceeds will be generously match funded by Barclays bank. The party will begin at 6:30 (with the film starting at 7) and will end at 8:30. My name is Ellie Gomes and I am running this event in order to raise money to fund a trip to help at an orphanage in Vietnam which I am taking next July, through the charity, Concordia at Esher College. As well as assisting with cleaning, painting and building, I will have a chance to teach and play with the children living in the orphanage. Many of these children will be disabled, as a large number were affected genetically by the ‘Agent Orange’ warfare chemical during the

Vietnam War. The amount I raise allows me to go and provides the materials and supplies to donate to the orphanage. I am incredibly keen to get out there and help in whatever way I can, and I hope the Santa AfterParty will help me raise the funds I would need. If you would like to buy tickets, please email me: ellie_gomes@hotmail.com or call me: 07809436487. And I will add you to the list, or feel free to contact me if you have any questions! I am planning for this to be a ticketed event, so I can cater sufficiently so please let me know if you’d like to come and bring along all your friends too! Thank you, hope to see you all there!

Hi. My name is Freddie and I am 8 years old. Two years ago I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. What has happened in last two years? People Tom Leslie Kelley 1924 – 2013

Remembrance Sunday is always a poignant occasion each year as we make time to recall those many people whose lives have been claimed by war. Within New Malden, we have a very strong tradition of marking Remembrance, seeking to combine gratitude towards those who gave up their lives for others with the resolve to settle the present and future problems of this world through peaceful means if possible. For many, Remembrance is still a deeply personal experience as they recall friends or members of their families who were killed in the various wars that have taken place over the last century. For me, Remembrance Sunday will have a particular poignancy this year given that it will be my first in New Malden without the presence of Tom Kelley. Tom, who died on 14th August this year, was a soldier during World War Two. Called up at a very young age, Tom saw fierce action in Normandy, Holland and Germany and after the war was stationed in Palestine where he was present in Jerusalem for the bombing of the King David Hotel in 1946. Whilst, in one sense, a survivor of all this, it was clear from our conversations that these events certainly took their toll on Tom. Most obviously through having close friends suddenly shot or blown up alongside him and constantly facing the prospect of his own death. But, perhaps just as difficult, through then proceeding to live a long life after the war with the experience of having a wife, children and grandchildren that was denied to so many others. And all because of seemingly random things like Tom being sent to relay a message at just the moment when the rest of his platoon were being blown up or, on another occasion, because a bomb fragment struck the brass button on his cuff rather than hitting him an inch either side. Unsurprisingly, Tom struggled with the idea of there being a God overseeing all this and so it was a privilege that he requested, shortly before his death, that I nonetheless conduct his funeral at Christ Church. And one of the things I sought to mark at that service was the manner in which Tom sought to respond to his survival, showing a remarkable energy for continued service to others. Extremely loyal to the memories of his fallen comrades and the cause of caring for their families, Tom also gave a remarkable amount of

his time to his involvement within Civil Defence, MEFAS (Malden Emergency First Aid Society) and acting as a volunteer in the casualty departments of the hospitals of Kingston and St Helier. Within all of these endeavours, he showed a constant good humour and dedication. One of the things that I discovered about Tom as I prepared for his funeral was that the very first film which he and his future wife Daphne saw alone together was Gone with the Wind. The theme of that story is that of the quest for survival following the devastation of war with much of its tragedy deriving from the decision of its central character, Scarlett O’Hara, that selfishness is the only answer. The life of Tom Kelley shows that this is not so. Here was a man who found life and its seemingly random harshness extremely perplexing. But somehow he also discovered that the path through such experiences is through continued self-giving to others. Tom Kelley is therefore a survivor whom New Malden can honour at Remembrance this year just as much as those many others who lives were taken by those terrible wars. New Malden History That glorious summer? by Robin Gill As we approach the 100th anniversary of the start of World War 1, I thought it was important to reflect whether the months of May to July 1914 leading up to the war, were rightly called “the golden summer”. Bad omens It certainly can’t have been the weather; there are reports of villagers taken shelter in marquees at various events because of the rain. On 14th June, there was what was called a “Blood Red Tempest” when a massive storm broke over a wide area. Day became night, with sheets of blood red lightning and loud bursts of thunder. Heavy rain was followed by hailstones “as big as walnuts”. The whole storm lasted for about four hours, and under the railway bridge on Kingston Road, water lay to a depth of four feet. The tram service was delayed until six o’clock that evening, and the first vehicle through, had water reaching over its wheels, and onto the floor of the carriage.

Maybe the portent of trouble ahead occurred as early as 5th May when Malden’s fountain was knocked down a horse drawn timber van from Fulham. The two horses were drinking at the trough, and when they pulled away to continue their journey the protruding wood hit the structure. The fountain was damaged again ten days later, when a horse and cart from the Clapham Park Bottling Co, bolted and collided with the structure knocking down a temporary lamp. Charles Davis a resident of Malden for fifty years, and who lived almost opposite the fountain, took the unfortunate opportunity to suggest to the council, that the erection be replaced by an illuminated clock. The council did not take up his idea and the fountain was repaired with two lamps replacing the original solitary light. New institutions The young men of the village were blissfully unaware of what lay ahead for many of them, as a new institute was opened on the site of the Holy Trinity Church. The main instigator of this scheme was Mr Graham P Spicer who had led the Young Men’s Bible Class And Institute for a number of years. Mr Spicer had begun his association with the class then run by Mr James Hurst in 1905 when he played the harmonium for them. He subsequently took over the group with help from Dr Cran, and by 1914, the membership had risen to 111 (men aged 16-26). These members enjoyed an outing to Marlow in July, including a trip down the river with a picnic on its banks. May, also saw the formation of the New Malden branch of the National Union of Women’s Suffrage Society. Although younger than some of the other branches, they held large meetings before the outbreak of war, and amongst their speakers were Clara Rackham known for her inspiring words, and Robert Cholmeley. Although never proved, it was suspected that suffragettes were responsible for dousing some trees in Richmond Park with oil and setting them alight, causing a call out from the Malden and Coombe Fire Brigade.

Large crowds flocked to the Derby at wondering whether there would be any repeat of events of the previous year which resulted in the death of Emily Wilding Davison. All roads to Epsom were busy and on the morning of the race there was a continuous stream of all kinds of horse-drawn vehicles and motor cars long Church Road and Old Malden Lane. This year a lady called Ada Rice was arrested after firing a starting pistol at a policeman. Animal antics Generally life went on as normal in Malden where, according to the papers “A goat is to be seen following its mistress on her daily walks, walking at her heels quite indifferent to road traffic and passers-by,” and, where “a cat has taken a great fancy to a young cuckoo, which is being reared by hand. The cat carries the bird around on its back, and plays with it as though it was a kitten. If any other cat approaches, it is immediately up in arms”. Council considerations The council meanwhile had other things on its agenda; they had recently taken possession of a new extension built onto the council offices (which had only been built in 1905). The extension housed a new council chamber, which the council were eager to try it out. Holding their first meeting there on 16th June, they were quick to praise the local architect Harold Bailey (later to build the parish hall). Mr Bailey called it a “labour of love” and

stated that most of the design work had been carried at his home Culloden in Coombe Road. The room still required cork flooring and curtains which would improve the acoustics. But the council was not always inward looking, and on 13th June, all the officers and workmen employed by the council were treated to a day out at Box Hill. 124 employees set off in charabancs from the council offices at noon, and had lunch on the slopes of the hill. The outing was at the instigation of one of the councillors George Hodgson who was chairman of the Highways Committee and during the course of the day he was presented was a silver mounted ebony walking stick, engraved with his initials on behalf of the council employees. The party toured Surrey in the afternoon before returning to Box Hill for tea. Sports were held in the evening, and the charabancs returned to Malden at 8.45pm, with the hope the outing would become an annual event. Other important matters for the council to deal with included proposed arterial roads from Greater London into Surrey. The council were against any new roads feeling that any increase in traffic could be dealt with by the widening of certain routes. They were also anxious that any proposed route from Kingston Vale (Kingston By Pass) did not cut off the newly opened Beverley Park from the rest of the village. The park apart from recreational amenities was also used to graze sheep by Mr Ransom the local butcher.

Sports and recreation July also saw the annual cricket week at Malden Wanderers ground in Burlington Road. This celebration started in 1907, and proved very popular in the district. In 1914 the Malden team were strengthened by the inclusion of four Surrey players Sandham, Gillespie, Hayes, and Hobbs. Jack Hobbs (who scored 71) known as The Master had played for Surrey since1905, and England since 1908, regarded widely as the world’s best batsman and was at his peak. Gillespie (who scored 76) was killed at Ypres less than two years later aged 27. Continuing on a sporting theme, there were plans to establish a golf course between South Lane and the Hogsmill and the other side of the river in Surbiton. It was hoped that this scheme, would stop the land being purchased for housing purposes. Whether it would infringe on nearby properties in the Kingston Road, such as the delightfully named Sleepy Hollow owned by Mr Simpson, was unclear. The 16th and final exhibition of the Maldens, Coombe, and Worcester Park, Horticultural and Cottage Garden Society took place on 15th July was held in the meadow at the rear of Coombe House which was occupied by the

Pearson family who were to lose their lives on the Lusitania in 1915. Most of the prizes went to the gardeners of the big houses in Coombe, but there were prizes for children e.g. Girls under 15: Knitted Socks or Patched Pinafores, or Boys under 15: Model of greenhouse or Fretwork. The afternoon ended with sports for all the children, with the girls having skipping, egg and spoon, and needle threading races, whilst the boys engage in tug of war or throwing the cricket ball. The evening ended with fireworks provided by Paul Typke the local scout leader. The enjoyment of those taking part must have been tempered by knowing what could possibly be lying ahead. In a little more than two weeks (4th August) Great Britain had declared war on Germany, and before the end of the month Malden had received notification of its first casualty. Frank Walter Dawes of Burlington Road was killed on 23rd August at the Battle of Mons fighting with the East Surrey Regiment. He was aged 20. Maybe, because the future was uncertain, people in Malden seemed to try harder to enjoy themselves in that last summer before the war. It is true to say, life in Malden would never be the same again.

View from the City by Justin Urquhart Stewart

In 2012, 484,224 new businesses were registered in the UK, up from 440,600 in the previous year and almost a world away from an average of around 150,000 to 180,000 back in the 70’s and 80’s. Something has changed and it appears to be quite a fundamental alteration in the UK economy. The smaller to medium sized enterprises (SMEs, defined as having less than 250 employees) are actually the life blood of the UK economy, with more employment and investment than the traditional leviathans that we normally hear about. People, despite the fears from the banks and the nerves of the media, seem to be far more willing than ever before to risk everything, put the house on the line and have a go at running their own business. This is in spite of the failings of the banking system and our structural failing in the UK to financially support start ups effectively (back to my rants on peer to peer lending again). I find this not just remarkable but very encouraging. As I have mentioned before, we now have a record number of active companies in the UK (3.1 million), and this is despite the financial environment and a tax regime only marginally conducive to supporting the entrepreneur. I grant that this has improved a little, but as we have a new breed of politicians who have never had a job, and civil servants who have never risked their assets, I suppose that this is hardly surprising. Going back to the late 90’s we used to have an excellent lunch time television show on BBC2 called Working Lunch, and one of their great highlights was the focus on small and developing businesses. This was done neither in the pseudo drama of Dragon’s Den, nor with the facile game show that is The Apprentice, but rather with real stories of business striving and thriving in and amongst all the economic issues that the businesses had to face. Another statistic I found was that start ups and small businesses make up 95% of all companies and employ more than 7 million people, out of a working population of just a tad under 30 million. Now let’s be realistic. Around half of these companies will sadly die within three years, but at a rising run rate

20

like this, surely this has to be one of the most supportive pieces of economic and business news we have seen lately. So did this astonishing number reach the headlines? No - barely a mention although page 4 of the Financial Times (at the bottom of the page) had a modest comment. As Brits we are of course somewhat reluctant to shout about our successes, but on the other hand it’s about time we gave ourselves a dose of confidence that something tangible is being achieved. Oh and please don’t let me hear any politician claiming any thanks for this. They haven’t put up their house, they haven’t stayed awake at night wondering if the business is going to be there in the morning, and I wonder if they have ever had that fear of putting your cash card in to the bank machine to find that you are down to your last sous. Even now I hope that one day we will have a Chancellor that really understands the triggers that can help smaller businesses to get them going, not in give-aways, but sensible incentives for investment and returns, and encouraging capital and investment

Appeal

Poppy Collectors The end of World War 1 saw the return to civilian life large numbers of physically and mentally injured men and women. Poppies, an important reminder of the war, were sold on the continent to raise funds for ex-servicemen and the idea caught on in Britain. A group of disabled ex-servicemen under the guidance of Major George Howson MC started to make artificial poppies, and the first Poppy Appeal took place in 1921. The war ended in 1918 on November 11th, and this has become the date on which we remember the victims of all conflicts, both civilian and military. Thus the Poppy Appeal as we know it spread from small beginnings into the powerful and successful movement that it is today. All the money raised by the appeal, except for the costs of the appeal itself, goes to help serving and ex-servicemen and women, and their dependants in time of need, through The Royal British Legion’s Benevolent Fund. Indeed the Legion’s Royal Charter commits it irrevocably to this.

Community New Malden Reads Together

Christ Church New Malden Primary School, with Burlington Junior School, is planning a New Malden Reads Together week from Monday 10th February – Friday 14th February 2014. The project has been inspired by Dunbar Reads Together in Scotland. Lindsay Barley, teacher at Dunbar Primary writes: “The idea was to ask all of those already working with children in any capacity to enter into dialogue about books, so the first step was to contact these people in the community. The rugby coaches would chat about books in the changing rooms. The Brownies would talk about books round the camp fire. For Dunbar Primary, providing reading role models for every child was already at the heart of the school’s practice; the school’s

recruitment of volunteers from the community to come in and share books with pupils now makes sure that every child has the opportunity to read with an adult in school. Dunbar Reads Together went one step further and made sure that book chat could continue beyond the school gates.” It is our aim to run a similar project to: • create a buzz in the community around reading • promote reading for enjoyment for all At our first brainstorming meeting ideas included: extreme reading, a ‘Read’ing Festival (complete with pop-up tents and wellie boots), mass book clubs, reading to the elderly, different book characters wandering down the High Street each day, library read-in sessions, book swap library at the train station, books hidden in local shops, books available at all of the cafes and a Mad Hatter’s Tea Party, with books, of course! The next stage is to involve as many people in the local community as possible, and to plan a week of events and activities. We would love to involve the whole New Malden community in this initiative. If you think you could be involved in any way, or you have any contacts in the literary world, please contact Izzy Rickards, Deputy Headteacher at Christ Church New Malden Primary School (yricka1@ccnm.rbksch.org). Let’s work together to get New Malden reading together.

Adolph Hitler and me Part 1 By Michael Wood

(adapted with permission from his work on The Hereford Chronicle) herefordchronicle.co.uk

We first moved to the New Malden area when we came to live with my Auntie Nick and Uncle Fred at 96, Highdown, Worcester Park probably in January or February 1940. We did not stay there for very long. Our new lodgings were with Fred and Beatrice Kiddle, Beattie being my father’s cousin. They lived in New Malden somewhere around Cambridge Avenue. It may be that the move was made because the new accommodation was nearer to where my father was based, at what had been the Golf Club at the Coombe end of New Malden. I must have attended some kind of nursery class starting in the late spring or early summer of 1940. I have a very clear memory of an incident at that class which must have been in a secondary school, probably Coombe

Girls’ School. It was the middle of the morning in June or July, as it was a bright sunny day, the sirens went and the teacher led us through what I now know was a school chemistry laboratory with benches and Bunsen burners. I was terrified, I thought that it was some kind of torture chamber and I was glad when we arrived at the air raid shelter. It must have been a false alarm as the all clear soon went and we returned to the class room. We probably moved around half a mile to Park View, New Malden very shortly after that, perhaps during the school summer holiday. The first house which we had was number 21, which we rented and we remained there until at least May 1941 as I have a receipt made out to Dad giving that address and dated 29th May, 1941. I am fairly sure that I must have started to attend Burlington Road Infants School, later to be named New Malden East, in early September 1940. If this were the case it would explain one of my most powerful memories of that period. I was at school, and the sirens had gone. The teachers had grouped us all together, made sure that we all

had our gas masks and taken us to the air raid shelter. These shelters were large rectangular brick structures with no windows and with what I now know to be a flat reinforced concrete roof. You entered through a staggered gap situated at one of the shorter ends. There were new slatted wooden benches around the walls and in the middle. Drills and propaganda were prevalent and it was very firmly placed in my mind that if the ‘warning’ was heard you had to go to the shelter and that you must not leave it until the ‘all clear’ sounded. Although there were sounds of explosions coming from the outside, probably the sound of the anti-aircraft guns, but perhaps of bombs, I was feeling quite safe in the shelter. The children were whispering, but it was fairly quiet, when I became aware that one of the teachers was having an argument, behind the blast wall. After a few minutes the teacher came to get me. Mum was waiting with Yvonne in the push chair. Apparently she was determined that we should all be together at home in our shelter. The teacher was insisting that we remain in the school shelter, but Mum would have none of this, she was determined to go home, a distance of around half a mile. We set off across the playground to the school gate. The noise was very loud. There were dozens of shell bursts high up in the blue sky, but none were anywhere near the aircraft which were flying around. Shrapnel was falling all about us, and although small pieces would probably not kill

you they presented some danger of injury. Soon after we left the school we heard the sound of falling bombs in the distance. We walked down the alley way and into Blagdon Road. Just at that moment the noise got louder so Mum ran to a house and banged on the front door. Fortunately there was someone at home, a lady answered the door and Mum asked if we could take cover. The lady agreed and we went inside. At this point it is appropriate that I record my appreciation for the education which was provided for me by the then Surrey County Council at Burlington Road School, later called New Malden East. When I entered the infants school, the headmistress was Miss Stewart. I must have progressed to the junior school around 1942, I cannot remember the name of the headmaster, but I do remember the teacher who was to have a profound effect on me, as I was for some reason in her class for at least two years, possibly because of my evacuation for most of 1944 and part of 1945. Miss Goldsworthy or was it Miss Galsworthy was probably only in her thirties but seemed older. She had a reputation as a very strict disciplinarian and certainly she had eyes in the back of her head and could keep the naughtiest boys under strict control. I really liked her and I did very well, learning a great deal. I am sure that it was the foundation which she laid that enabled me to pass the eleven plus in 1947.

Ground Cover by Pippa Greenwood

Ground cover plantings are a wonderful way to create gorgeous carpets of colour in your garden, whatever its size and wherever it’s located. But what’s so special about groundcover growing, when is it most useful and when should you start?

N B E W AS M ED AL IN D EN

The initial few months will take some effort, but once growing well, most ground cover planting needs little if any maintenance except perhaps a very occasional trim, some food and water in drier weather. It has a superbly smothering effect on the weeds, killing weedlings and deterring further weeds from appearing. The denser the groundcover planting, the better the effect. Autumn is a great time for planting. Trees, shrubs, climbers and herbaceous plants that go in to the ground at this time of year often establish extremely well as they have the luxury of enjoying the relatively warm and yet moist soil, a perfect place for new roots to grow out and establish rapidly. Make sure you invest a bit of time and effort in to the preparation. Clear the area of weeds, digging out all tough weeds completely if you can. Fork the soil over, removing debris such as large stones or buried rubbish and then fork in plenty of well-rotted manure or garden compost, and perhaps a little slow-release feed too.

If you’re planting up a slope, it’s worth trying to secure the soil a little too, as all that preparation and weed clearing will have loosened the surface and made it prone to erosion. Once growing well the roots of the plants will help to secure the slope brilliantly, but in the meantime, use landscape fabric pinned down onto the surface of the slope. Don’t be tempted to cram the plants in too closely. Given time they will form the desired effect if planted at the correct spacing. But if you fall in to the trap of planting them elbow to elbow, then they are more likely to become stressed and miserable, more prone to disease and will need thinning out. Make sure the plants are kept just moist at the roots until they’re well established and feed occasionally. By choosing varieties of plants which are recommended for use as groundcover you’ll be unlikely to have to do much if any pruning. So what should you choose to grow? Foliage that is attractive and interesting makes a wonderful groundcover planting and if you wish you can add a few more flamboyant flowering plants to the mixture too. By using plants with interestingly shaped leaves or variegated leaves your leafy planting will look even better. If you want a reasonable effect all year around, then select at least some of the plants you use from the evergreens. These may lose their leaves, but they do so gradually so you’ll never be left with totally bare soil. Great Shrubby Groundcover Ideas Heaths and Heathers, Cotoneaster horizontalis and Cotoneaster microphyllus, Stephandra incise ‘Crispa’, groundcover roses eg the ‘Flower Carpet’ roses. Great Shade-Tolerant groundcover Ideas Sarcococca hookeriana var.humilis, Mahonia repens, Gaultheria procumbens, Hypericum calycinum, many hebes including Hebe pinguifolia, Euonymus fortune cultivars such as ‘Emerald n’Gold’, ‘Emerald Gaiety’ Herbaceous Ground Cover in Shadier Spots Sweet violets, pulmonaria (lungworts) eg the white-flowered ‘Sissinghurst’, Bugle (the ajugas eg Ajuga reptans ‘Burgundy Glow’), Lysimachia nummularia (Creeping Jenny), Lily-of-thevalley, Lamium ‘White Nancy’ and Lamium ‘Silver Beacon’, Bergenia Sunnier Groundcover Snow-in-summer, thymes, oregano, many of the sedums, chamomile. Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood.com for a great range of gardening-related Christmas gifts including stylish ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ gift card, handmade pottery herb planters, recycled metal sculptures, Pippa’s favourite weeding tool, signed books and lots of seriously useful garden items.

Kids

New Baby in New Malden I can’t wait till they build the lift at New Malden Station. Have you tried getting up those stairs with a buggy? You’re reduced to standing at the foot of the stairs, looking pathetic and trying to accost suitable young men to help. After one experience of being miserably stuck at the top, I decided to give the pram a break and take my baby everywhere in her sling instead. Life suddenly became a lot easier. I’ve noticed that more and more people carry their baby on their front now, and one of the great advantages is that if you’re breastfeeding, your baby can have a drink on the move without anybody being any the wiser. When she was a bit smaller however I would get a few concerned comments about the fact that she seemed to be rather lopsided during such times. One lady accosted me in the High Street, took hold of the baby’s feet and tried to reorganise her into the middle. Since she was actually having a good old slurp at the time, this was slightly uncomfortable. When the lady met with some resistance she had a closer look and said “Aha! She is on the breast!”, we had a bit of a laugh and off I went on my way. For those of you who manage to struggle onto the platform at New Malden Station and want to find somewhere weather-proof in town to meet friends, here are my top three baby-friendly recommendations: 1. The Polka Theatre, near Wimbledon Station (or 131 bus stops outside it.) There is a wonderful play area in the foyer with rocking horses, dressing up clothes, colouring corner and lots of books. You don’t have to attend a performance to use the play area which is free of charge and the staff are very welcoming. There’s also a cafe and a small outdoor playground. 2. The Bees Knees Cafe, near Clapham Junction (in the Battersea Arts Centre). This is a nice indoor play space with lots of toys, and there is a good cafe in the building where you can get big, healthy salads to eat while you watch your children play. 3. The Royal Festival Hall, near Waterloo. Not a children’s venue as such, but it’s a child-friendly space with very enticing stairs for those who are just learning to crawl, and if they do make it up to the fifth floor, there’s a Poetry Library with an excellent selection of rhyming children’s books and cosy beanbags to snuggle on and read them. Good luck with the stairs, everyone, and roll on March 2014 when the lifts should finally be installed!

New Malden People Manaal Mullan

My name is Menaal Mullan . As a 7 year old girl living in New Malden, I like all the usual things like watching Harry Potter, Sally Bollywood and Spy Kids . I also like dressing up and I love going out and also swimming. At home I love to read. Another part of my life is being a Muslim. I am part of the Ahmadi sect in Islam, and, in the UK our organisation is called the Ahmadiyya Muslim Association. For the women and girls, we have lots of events, and our association has competitions on a local, regional and national level. As I am seven, I was excited and nervous because this was the first year I would be able to take part in our yearly competitions. I remember looking at the list of competitions, and seeing that in the speech competition there was a subject about the Holy Prophet’s (peace be on him) kindness towards children. He was very kind towards children and believed that children should be treated with respect and kindness, as they would become the adults of tomorrow. He said that if you brought up children with kindness, especially girls, then they would become polite and mannered, and bring their own children up with good morals too. As this was a subject I really wanted to talk about, I asked

my Dad to help me write a speech on this topic. I had to learn the speech by heart, as this was the rule in the competition. Once I had learned it all, I entered the local competition in our new Malden Group, and won! The next competition was for the whole of London, and to my surprise, I won that too. Then 2 weeks ago, I went to our mosque in Morden, Baitul Futu, which is the largest mosque in West Europe, and entered the National Finals. My group was the 7-9 year old girls. I was very nervous, but did feel confident after seeing my friends there. I went on stage in front of 4-500 people, and did my speech! Everyone told me I had done really well, and I felt proud of myself, as it was the biggest thing I had taken part in. I didn’t win a prize for my speech this year, but did win 3rd prize in the handicrafts competition! I’ve learnt that I can do it, and saw how the older girls did their speeches, so next year I plan to come back with a prize!

1 Melt the butter in a saucepan then stir in the flour and mix with a wooden spoon to make a smooth paste. Cook over a low heat for 1 minute. Gradually whisk the milk a little at a time. Once all the milk has been added, cook over a low heat for a further 2-3 minutes, whisking continuously, until you have a smooth and thick sauce. Remove from the heat and cool for 5 minutes. 2 Beat in the egg yolks, parsley and two-thirds of the Cheddar and Stilton. Season lightly with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Preheat the oven to 180C/350F/Gas Mark 4. Butter four large ramekin dishes and line the bases with circles of baking parchment. 3 Place the egg whites in a clean, grease-free bowl and whisk until stiff. Beat one spoonful of the egg whites into the cheese sauce to loosen it slightly then gently fold the sauce into the remaining egg whites. Divide the mixture evenly between the prepared dishes. 4 Place the dishes in a roasting tin and pour in boiling water to come halfway up the sides of the dishes. Bake for 20-25 minutes until risen and golden. Transfer the dishes to a cooling rack (the soufflés will sink a little but don’t worry). Increase the oven temperature to 200C/400F/Gas Mark 6. 4 Turn the soufflés out into a shallow baking dish and remove the lining papers. Sprinkle over the remaining cheese and return to the oven for 15-20 minutes until piping hot and puffy. Spoon the cream over the top and bake for a further 2-3 minutes until heated through. Serve immediately with salad, sprinkled lightly with cayenne pepper, if liked. Tip To prepare ahead, leave the soufflés to cool after the initial baking, then turn them out into the baking dish and cover with cling film. Chill in the fridge for a few hours or overnight and top with the cheese and bake for the second time just before serving.

Events Richmond Ice Rink in the Grounds of York House, Twickenham The Richmond temporary Ice Rink will be in operation between 30th November 2013 and 12th January 2014. The ice rink is named in the memory of the world famous Richmond Ice Rink (not far from the site of the temporary ice rink) which closed in 1992. The old rink attracted many famous figure skating stars including Olympic Gold Medal winning duo Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean. Both have been long time supporters of the ice rink and were responsible for hand delivering a 48,000 strong petition to Downing Street, to try to prevent its closure. On hearing about the temporary ice rink in Twickenham Chris said he was “heartened to hear that skating is returning to the area having been missed for so many years” Jayne added “it will be a great event for the local community”. Twickenham Alive has been working on the ice rink project for two years and local businesses are

sponsoring the temporary ice rink (see Partners page on the website). In addition to the core skating sessions available at the Richmond Rink, visitors will be treated to a number of extra special events and activities. These include Shetland pony rides, Santa’s grotto, festive snacks, skating performances and much more. Prior booking is recommended and tickets can be purchased from the Richmond Rink website RichmondRink.com. Throughout November in the lead up to opening a 10% reduction will be available. Corporate and group bookings are available. About Richmond Rink Richmond Ice Rink, in East Twickenham, was known all over the world and was extremely popular, at one point being the largest skating rink in the world. This winter, the intention is to provide a small temporary ice rink on Twickenham Riverside in the stunning grounds of the 17th century York House. The rink will operate for six weeks between 30th November 2013 and 12th January 2014. The rink will be located on the tennis courts in the grounds of Grade II listed York House, headquarters of the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames. The ice rink will be 300m² with a maximum capacity of 100 skaters per 45 minute session; there will be 10 sessions

The rink uses the latest technology and the aluminium based rinks are up to 40 percent more economical in terms of energy consumption than traditional ice rinks that use either rubber or polyethylene. And finally We also have a number of figure skaters lined up for an opening ceremony, a star wars on ice performance and as a fitting touch to the old rink we have also got the old manager of the Richmond ice rink (gary stefan who was also a professional ice hockey player for the Richmond Flyers) to agree to manage and run the winter rink.

Events A Jacobean Conspiracy?

Dr Tracy Borman speaking on Witches at Christ Church New Malden

Evil is a far from popular subject today. Even the fun that we seek to have with it once a year at Halloween points to its general dismissal as a superstitious and old fashioned concept that modern societies have now, thankfully, moved beyond. Until, that is, events occur like the Soham murders or 9/11 when the vocabulary of evil is suddenly and dramatically reintroduced (not least by the tabloids) to respond to what has happened. Most of the time, however, evil is a concept we prefer not to think about. Four hundred years ago, the opposite was true in this country with the existence of a deeply unhealthy obsession with evil. James VI of Scotland became James I of England in 1603 and one of the things that he brought with him was a dangerous preoccupation with witchcraft. The king wrote his own tract on the subject – Daemonologie – and under his encouragement scores of ‘witches’ were accused, arrested and executed in the years that followed. Most of these people were single women guilty of little more than having made enemies in their local communities and arousing suspicion and hatred. One of the most infamous cases during the reign of James I was that of the ‘Belvoir Witches’ when Joan, Margaret and Philippa Flower of Bottesford in Leicestershire were accused of using witchcraft to harm the infant sons of the influential Earl of Rutland, Francis Manners and his wife Cecilia. Whilst Joan died following her arrest, her unfortunate daughters were tried and eventually hanged for their ‘crimes’ in Lincoln in 1619. Native of Lincoln but now resident in New Malden and a member of Christ Church, Dr Tracy Borman recently published a book on the subject. ‘Witches: A Tale of Sorcery, Scandal and Seduction’ uses the Belvoir case as a window through which to examine the whole phenomenon of ‘witchcraft’ during the seventeenth century. Following the success of her previous books on Henrietta Howard (the mistress of George II), Elizabeth I and Matilda (the wife of William the Conqueror), ‘Witches’ is beautifully written, marked by meticulous research and is already being widely acclaimed. Disturbing and fascinating, perhaps the most startling aspect of the book is Tracy’s uncovering of a previously undetected conspiracy that may well explain what was really going in the case of the ‘Witches of Belvoir’. On Thursday 28th November at 8.00 pm Tracy will be

speaking on her book at Christ Church, New Malden. Admission will be free and wine and canapés served. There will, however, be a retiring collection after her talk with all of the proceeds going towards the campaign to stop human trafficking. As big a scandal as the horrific treatment of supposed witches during the seventeenth century and startlingly similar in the vulnerability of its victims, modern day slavery is growing and something that Christ Church and New Malden Baptist Church have recently decided to combine in campaigning against. Views may have changed upon evil since the seventeenth century and there will continue to be disagreements about its nature. But the evil of human trafficking is something that all of us can surely acknowledge and seek to eradicate. So do come on 28th November to hear a fascinating talk by Tracy Borman and contribute to this vital cause. Stephen Kuhrt is Vicar of Christ Church, New Malden

Dad’s Diary Autumn Leaves by Ian Duncan There is something special about November, whether it is the magical way leaves change colour, the wonder of fireworks, or the poignancy of Remembrance Day. Gunpowder treason and Plots For me, Bonfire night and the move back to Greenwich Mean Time always seem to mark the real start Autumn (For those of you who can’t remember which way the clock goes and American friend taught me this - Spring Forward. Fall back). Have you ever tried explaining to someone not from these shores quite why we celebrate on 5th November? Well it’s like this, some bloke with a beard tried to blow up the king, failed, got his head chopped off and so we burn a effigy of him and set of fireworks. Pause and wait for the bemused look. Apparently, the bonfire tradition began the very same year as the failed plot - 1605. On the 5th, agitated Londoners, who knew little more than that their King had been saved, lit bonfires in thanksgiving. Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness, One of the things I like about New Malden is the number of trees we have lining our streets. I love the way that they are transformed from the greens of summer into the golds of autumn. Who can resist crunching through the carpet of orange and russet leaves? Thank goodness that the Council don’t sweep away the leaves efficiently and you can kick great piles of rustling leaves into the air as you walk down the street (until your kids get too embarrassed and ask you to stop.) Christmas comes this time each year However, one thing does diminish my enjoyment of this time of year and that’s Christmas. I love Christmas but, the last time I looked, it is scheduled for the 25th December. Why is that retailers have taken the profound words of The Beach Boys’ Little St Nick to mean September. October, November and December, a third of the year! This year I saw my first Christmas advert on TV on 12th October and Waitrose had the decorations out for sale alongside the Halloween swwets. Now I think that the best bit about Christmas is the anticipation: opening the Advent Calendar day by day, scurrying around doing a bit of last minute shopping, wondering whether you’ve been marked down as “Naughty” or “Nice”. We don’t need four months to prepare, do we? No wonder so many people get bored and stressed come the big day.

60

Remember So let’s leave Christmas until Christmas and enjoy autumn for its own sake: take a stroll in Richmond Park and delight in those golden trees; look upwards and go “ooh, aah” at fantastic fireworks or reflect on the quiet dignity of the Remembrance Day Parade along the High Street. In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields.
