Now I’m usually one of the first to scoff about how early Christmas starts these days in some shops/TV and generally go along with the view that anything pre-December is a little out of place, however you’ll notice the ‘C’ (Christmas!) word gets a more than generous appearance in this edition. It is in November after all that most of the schools have their shopping evenings, and when Father Christmas himself turns up in High Streets and Shopping Centres to switch on Christmas lights displays. Last night (Oct 20th) however was a little surreal for me as I was lucky enough to be a small part of the audience to watch International superstar Michael Buble record his Christmas special – complete with fake snow, trees, Christmas songs and line of choirboys dressed like Val Doonican. Pure magic! We can’t promise such celebrity at the turning on of the New Malden Christmas lights but Father Christmas has promised to bring a very large sack of presents, a few furry friends and we hope to see lots of you turn out for this terrific event at 5.30pm on November 25th. November of course also marks Remembrance as you’ll see from this month’s front cover.You can find out more about local acts of Remembrance on page 17. So there’s lots going on locally this month. I have found it difficult to record the early history of the (Royal) British Legion in the Malden area without reference to the ExService Club which existed at the same time. There are various grounds for this. One of the main reasons is that the original application to form a branch of the Legion in Malden came from original members of the Club. You could become a comrade of the Ex-service Club without joining the Legion, but it was very difficult to join the Legion without being a representative of the Club.

1921 Nationally, the British Legion was formed on 15th May 1921 with the coming together of four organisations established for ex-servicemen. The National Association of Discharged Sailors and Soldiers, The National Federation Of Discharged and Demobilized Sailors and Soldiers, The Comrades Of The Great War, and The National Union Of Ex-Servicemen. The two minute silence on Armistice Day was already established, and the first Poppy Day took place on 11th November 1921. The poppy factory moved to Richmond from the Old Kent Road a year later, and the present building was constructed in 1933. The Cenotaph in Whitehall was originally built of wood and
In Malden, the Ex-Service Club was unofficially opened on 6th August 1921. It consisted of two wooden huts built in a field off Coombe Road. One hut contained two billiard tables, a bar for drinks, and facilities for card games. The other hut contained a large room suitable for concerts and was equipped with a stage. The two buildings were connected by a covered walkway. The club was officially opened on September 24th by General Sir Arthur Paget who was also the first President of the organisation. Sir Arthur, who had fought in both the Ashanti and Boer Wars, lived at Warren House in Coombe from 1907 until his death in 1928.Also present at the opening ceremony were Adolphus and Augustus Fitzgeorge both sons of the Duke Of Cambridge, and great grandsons of George III. After the Union flag had been raised, the national anthem was played by the band of the Kingston and Surbiton British Unity Legion, and the guests were given a tour of inspection, before tea was taken in the concert hall.The event concluded in the evening with a concert given by local entertainers, and music for dancing from the Kingston Workmen’s Club Orchestra. I have been unable to pinpoint the location of the buildings, as they were only temporary structures they do not show up on maps. The only clue to their position on Coombe Road was the planting of a purple beech tree which took place. Malden had sent nearly 1500 men to fight in the First World War, and over 150 had been killed in action. So there was a definite need both for an ex-service club, and a branch of Legion in the area. The club would satisfy the social (and sporting) needs of the returning troops, whilst the Legion was set up primarily to look after their welfare, and of their widows and families (health, living standards and jobs) The application to establish a Branch of the British Legion was completed on 12th August 1921 and received at the head office of the organisation on 15th August. The branch headquarters were given as the clubs address in Coombe Road with the officers being: President: Dr Hugh Rose Cran Chairman: Thomas Albert Cox Vice Chairman: Sidney Thornton Treasurer: Percy Joseph Pratt Secretary: James Fielding Frost By the following month (October) the membership of the club had reached 200 the majority of whom regularly

The Legion carried on their work trying to find employment for ex-soldiers, and there were now three members sitting on the District Council. They had a new president in William Bryett who was anxious to recruit new members.

took advantage if the facilities on offer. With all the social activities arranged the club had to advertise for the donation of a piano. Soon they had the makings of a small band, but the dances held still attracted more women than men.
The membership of the club (subscription ½d a week) had risen to over 300. A football team had been formed, and attempts were being made to bring together a band, this came to fruition in September. Plans were also under discussion to move the headquarters to a position more central in the village. Proposals for a war memorial were put in the hands of the Legion and Ex-Service Club. There was a general feeling in the local area that not enough effort had been put into the act of remembrance on November 11th. A meeting was held at the council offices in October, when it was decided that for the first time, the commemoration would take place in front of that building.
The Legion quietly carried on their own work. The first ever Poppy Day in Malden in 1921 resulted in £146 being raised by door to door collections involving 75 ladies. These collections only took place between 6am and 1pm on Remembrance Day, and the money was sent to Legion Headquarters. The branch had to wait awhile to receive their allocation back for local needs. 1922 Whilst the club carried on its monthly schedule of whist drives and dances, there were more serious issues to be undertaken.At a meeting held in February 1922 it was decided to nominate a candidate for the forthcoming election to the District (Maldens and Coombe) Council. Thomas Cox who ran a sweet shop in Blagdon Road was put forward jointly by the Legion and Club. He was elected unopposed when the other candidate withdrew. The club continued to expand with an extension to the billiard room, and the laying of a bowling green. When it came to inaugurate the new facilities, Lady Paget came down from Warren House to “break off” with the spot ball. It is interesting to note that one of the performers listed in their many concerts in 1922, was a youthful Doris Venner who had moved to Malden with her parents in the early 1920s. Even with all these events the Club and Legion struggled for numbers. Out of the 1500 that had fought in the war only 200 had joined the Club, and you could count the number of ex officers on one hand. An appeal was made in June 1922 by Lord Haig that all ex-officers should join the Legion. The subscription was 2/6 (12.5 pence) per year, and as the former military commander had moved to a property called Eastcott on Kingston Hill in 1919, the local officers must have found the appeal difficult to ignore. Sports and games were held in the field where the huts were built. These included the more genteel “guess the weight of the cake”, through cocoanut shys, to the more barbaric “ringing the pig”. Concerts were held in the evenings throughout the summer of 1922, and in was in these that Fred Jackson took part singing in a remarkably pleasant baritone voice. Fred, who had been blinded in the war, was to play an important part both in the Legion, and the history of Malden.

The occasion was attended by hundreds of residents, members of the council, and church ministers. After the singing of “Rock Of Ages” a maroon was set off from the top of the fire station to signal the start of the two minutes silence. The Chairman of the Council, Mr Dicker, then announced that the British Legion had taken on the responsibility for the proposed war memorial which would stand where they were today, and he hoped that funds would soon be collected. The Last Post was sounded by buglers from the East Surrey Regiment. This was the signal for schoolchildren to bring forward wreaths, which were placed on a table covered with the Union Flag, standing on the spot where the memorial was to be built. The frames for the wreaths had been constructed by the local British Legion, and the poppies had been inserted by the children. Other poppies were inserted into the framework of a cross which had been fixed to the railings surrounding the offices. Mrs Dora Porter, the wife of the local doctor in Malden Road, organised the sale of poppies on the day, which resulted in contributions totalling £235. 1923 The War Memorial Committee had ambitious plans. They were aiming to raise £2000, and after building the monument engraved with a roll of honour, the remaining monies were to be used to build an extension onto the Victoria Nursing Institute. The building called Taku stood on the north side of Westbury Road, close to the Baptist Church, and it was the committee intention that the beds in the extension would be available for ex-servicemen, their wives and dependents. The club now had 250 members still a long way short of the 1500 eligible. The Legion was distributing food, coal, and other items to those in need, thanks mainly to the money collected for poppies. more members. They had a stronger voice on the council when Lieutenant Colonel Ernest Thain of Elm Road was elected under the banner “Malden Work For Malden People”. At a special meeting held at the Graham Spicer Institute in April, it was stressed that the Legion was a democratic, non political and non sectarian organisation. It had an auxiliary section for women, and it was hoped that a branch for them would be formed soon. Great emphasis was placed on the help given to men who had returned from the war, but still suffered from the effects of gas. In all 90 individuals had been assisted by the Legion, and Christmas Puddings had been sent to 40 families. The legion had just under 100 members but needed more to carry out their task.
Progress was slow, but by July the club could boast over 350 members, and steps were underway to purchase some land in Cambridge Avenue on which to build a permanent HQ. Unfortunately the War Memorial Appeal seemed to have fallen on deaf ears, with only £10 forthcoming from 1000 appeal letters. Times were hard generally and the Kingston and Surbiton Branch of the Legion had gone into voluntary liquidation. Even a donation from the local MP for the

memorial didn’t make much of a dent in the amount still needed. Poppy day in 1923 only raised £17, and the occasion was overshadowed by the unveiling of the memorial in Kingston. Postscript However, the following year was to be one of progress, and New Malden unveiled its own memorial on 8th November (see Spirit Of Malden Part 2 Village Voice November 2007). The Club and Legion also built its new headquarters a few years later. As was written in October’s ‘Village Voice’.....”just over a year ago, on a sunny September afternoon, over 300 local residents (both past and present) attended a moving service at Christ Church to pay their respects to those who lost their lives when New Malden suffered serious bomb damage during the 1940s ‘Blitz’.”
Reverend Kuhrt, said: “It was very important and it was finishing off something that needed to be completed. “It was also very poignant. New Malden has such a strong community spirit and I think the tragedy brought the community together. I wonder whether some of that has continued to today.”
And, 12 months on, the sun shone again as local residents gathered on New Malden High Street (Sat October 15th) to commemorate those who had died, with the official unveiling of a new and lasting memorial – a cherry tree and a beautifully engraved plaque.
Rev Kuhrt said he hoped the setting of the plaque and tree, which will blossom later in the year, would serve as a lasting reminder to all those who lost their lives, not just the service men and women.
A short service was conducted, quite literally on the pavement, by Reverends Stephen Kuhrt and Helen Hancock (who jointly led the remembrance service last September). More than 50 people, many of whom had donated money for the memorial, returned for this year’s ceremony.
He also paid tribute to John Pendlebury, who was the curate at Christ Church in March 1941, and who died after pushing his wife and children to safety but being too late to save himself.

Local schoolboy, Charlie Hudson (9) attended the service last year, as well as the dedication service last month. He told the Village Voice; . “Both of my great-grandads were in the 2nd World War and I know that lots of their friends, family and neighbours died during the fighting and in the bombings in London. I can’t imagine what it would be like if something like that ever happened in New Malden today. I think it’s really important that we remember the people from our town who died here, over 70 years ago. We should think of them and how lucky we are to live in a peaceful place, like New Malden, every time we see this special tree outside Waitrose.” The erection of the tree and plaque was funded thanks to the generous donations of those who attended the service last September. The Service at the War Memorial on the 11th November 2011 will commence at 10.45am with the Deputy Mayor and the Chairman of the Royal British Legion planting crosses in the Garden of Remembrance. This will be followed by a short service and prayers at the War Memorial. There will be two minutes silence at 11 o’clock. The Remembrance Sunday Service on the 13th November will commence at 9.45am. The Youth Organisations, and all other organisations who wish to march will gather in Presberg Road at the Fountain and march off at 9.20am so they are in position for the Mayor’s arrival at the Memorial at 9.40am. The Minister presiding over the Service this year will be the Rev. J Pozzo of the Baptist Church. The Service should be over in about 30 minutes. The Legion would be pleased to see as many of the public attending if they are able to do so For anyone wanting to plant a cross in the Garden of Remembrance it will be in place from 29th October. So Just How Frightened Are We?

“The only thing we have to fear is fear itself ” Franklin D Roosevelt, 1933 So just how frightened are we? I am sure many will recall Clint Eastwood’s memorable line as Inspector Harry Callahan points a huge magnum (revolver, not ice cream) at a flailing and failing bank robber - “Do you feel lucky, punk?” Now just replace punk with the term “punter” and I can almost hear a similar intonation as the stock traders and bookies urge the would-be investor back into the market maelstrom. But is that so the punters can make money or so they can make commission? Of course in erratic days such as these, there are going to be times when shares and other investments will have dropped a great deal, and of course to some may well appear cheap. But does cheap mean good value? Not necessarily
- especially if they were overvalued in the first place. However, for the discerning investment manager and, come to that, the thoughtful private investor, there are certainly opportunities for those who have the heart to see through such stormy times. Maybe it is timely to remember some of those old bon mots from the Sage of Omaha, Warren Buffett. 1- I never attempt to make money on the stock market. I buy on the assumption that they could close the market the next day and not re-open it for five years. 2- We simply attempt to be fearful when others are greedy and to be greedy only when others are fearful. Homely little phrases they may be but nonetheless they are very sensible. After all, the market gyrations at the moment are based on economic fears, not corporate ones. Yes of course companies will be impacted by weaker economies, but you can tell from the index behaviour what they are reacting to. The slightest whiff of political initiative (now there is a rarity at the moment) and you add on a couple of percent; follow that with a nervous threat of impending recession and you can knock off the 2% again. If you fear Armageddon then it is pointless worrying. Just grab the whisky and run for the cave. However, if you think Armageddon will be delayed due to lack of interest, then

maybe take a longer view and follow the demand for business and money. Despite a recession (and in all honesty we probably aren’t quite done with the last one yet) money still gets spent and there is still demand, but just at a lower level. As I mentioned last week it will be those big businesses with a global reach that will still be operating in a healthy manner. From food to healthcare, from infrastructure to power generation, demand will continue in spite of, and in a few cases because of, the economic weakness. So here then is a more solid investment route to consider. When equity values are unreliable, government debt overvalued, cash returns running at below inflation, consider the old and most trusted investment tool compounding. My colleague Chris Birch kindly looked out the Barclays Capital Equity Gilt Study just to remind me of the figures. £100 invested in the equity market in 1945 would now (as of last year) have a nominal value of £7,932 - although after inflation sadly only £255 in real terms. Meanwhile, had you done the same calculation but with dividends being reinvested, the figure leaps to £136,107 although once again inflation reduces this to £4,370. What I find interesting as I go around the country is just how many businesses have adjusted and resized
themselves to the new economic conditions and are operating profitably and successfully, albeit on a smaller scale. From estate agencies through to manufacturers and even to certain retailers – adapting is the name of the game.This last group seems to have borne the brunt of the economic change as we saw with the latest figures from even the doyens of the UK retail world, namely Tesco and John Lewis. However, even here as personal budgets and debt are adjusted, a new level will be found and it is from there that the early shoots of growth will start to appear again. Also look overseas and we can still see - despite their forecasts of doom - that Eastern consumers are still spending even though the outlook coming from China is weaker. For Tesco and Burberry oriental strength has, to an extent, been balancing out occidental weakness. Meanwhile while political whims continue to provoke wild market gyrations, that will change and it will be the emergence of credible political policies and leadership that will be the trigger. Christmas is coming.....
by Churches Together in Malden Most of us, of a certain age, will know the well know jingle that begins with these words. I do not know what your thoughts are as the time draws closer. For some it retains much of its magic that we enjoyed as children.! For others it can be a very lonely time, one that they (and maybe you) try to avoid. Only this last weekend (as I write this article) I learned of someone who every year goes on a holiday to avoid

being with family etc. The rhyme continues with ....“the goose is getting fat”.... words that perhaps remind us of the fact that Christmas is also a time when many people struggle to find the money they feel they need to spend at this time of year. The pressure of the adverts on the TV and the displays in shop windows often tend to make this festival a period of pressure and stress, rather than as the angel said to the shepherds at that first Christmas “I bring you good news of great joy” The next couplet in the rhyme requests some action on our part, not towards our family and friends, but to those who are less fortunate. Scout Christmas Postal Service

Those of you who have lived in New Malden for a while will probably be familiar with the annual Scout Christmas Postal Service. Its red and black post boxes will be back out at various locations around New Malden in December, ready to take care of all your local Christmas card delivery needs. The service wholly supported by volunteers in the local Scout movement arrange for the boxes to be delivered around suitable sites within the New Malden community. They then arrange to collect the post on a weekly basis; this is then sorted back at 1st Malden Scout HQ, franked with the 1st Malden stamp and distributed amongst the scouts to be dropped through the
letterbox. All that is asked for the service is a minimum 20 pence donation per card sent. The funds that are raised are reinvested back into the 1st Malden group fund, so that they can be used for activities and equipment. This year there are some changes to the locations of the post boxes, they can be found at Suttles of Malden, Methodist Church Coffee Shop, Fountain News, Parkers and our new outlet for this year The Malden Centre. Boxes hope to be in place for Friday 25th November, with collections taking place over the next three weeks. So if you have cards that need to be delivered in the KT3 postcode area why not take advantage of the 1st Malden Scout Christmas Postal Service. VVoice

It’s the resulting caterpillars that do the damage, which becomes apparent from spring onwards. Apple, pear, cherry and plum trees are the usual targets. Grease bands or barrier glue applied round the tree trunk will mean a sticky end for the pesky things.

The temperatures may be falling along with the leaves, but there’s still lots to do to keep us busy outside. Take those leaves, for a start: what a great free resource for gardeners! Leaves rot down slowly to make leafmould. It takes about a year for the leaves to disintegrate enough for use as a mulch around vegetables and shrubs, or dug in as a soil improver. After two years they turn dark brown and crumbly. You can mix this mature leafmould with sharp sand and loam or garden soil to make seed or potting compost. The leafmould adds humus which is rich in nutrients and helps retain moisture. Almost any leaves can be used but thick, shiny ones (such as magnolia and camellia) take longer than others to rot. Prickly leaves such as holly are best avoided, as is yew because of its toxicity. In my garden where supplies are limited, I usually add a few to the general compost heap. They help balance ‘wetter’ ingredients such as veggie peelings and grass clippings. The rest are stored in large plastic sacks with a sprinkle of water to get them started. Tie the bags loosely at the top, pierce a few holes at the bottom to let air in -- and wait. There’s no shortage of autumn leaves on the allotment, so many prefer to keep them in a separate container rather than adding them to our normal heaps. That’s because leaves rot down slowly by the action of fungi rather than the quicker (and hotter) bacterial action that is responsible for composting. I’ve found that unlike compost heaps, leaves don’t need to be turned regularly: one of those sweaty jobs I do only when absolutely unavoidable. I’ll be using some of this precious stuff to plant tubs of tulips to brighten up the plot next spring. Tulips can suffer from a disfiguring disease known as tulip fire, so called because affected plants look as if they’ve been scorched. It’s best to pay more for quality bulbs which are unmarked and plump-looking, because once the disease takes hold, it can rapidly spread. The only solution then is to dig the lot up and burn them.

A marathon effort!
I wanted to mark the entry into my 40s with a sense of achievement and (hopefully) a good level of fitness.
by Cath Hill Turning 40 can do strange things to people: some might buy a flash car, some might have an affair and some push themselves to the point of tears and physical destruction by running just over 26 miles in a marathon. I fall into this last category. I’m definitely one of those people who is goal driven – and what better goal to face than the 2012 Virgin London Marathon?
Getting a place in the London Marathon In 2010, a record 36,549 people completed the London Marathon. Next year, I hope to be one of those crossing the finish line, whatever it takes! Generally, over 100,000 people apply for a place. There is a ballot in April/May of the previous year, but you’d be lucky to get in that way. I decided to guarantee my place by pledging to raise money for one of the many charities represented in the London Marathon.
I’m not totally new to running: 10 years ago I ‘discovered’ that I enjoyed this form of exercise and ended up completing the London Marathon aged 30. Back then I was a lot fitter, childless and obviously much younger!

I’m running for the Spinal Injuries Association (SIA) and there is a very good reason why I have chosen this charity. In 2003, my brother, a father of three, went into hospital to have a relatively straightforward operation on a slipped disk. Tragically, his spinal cord became damaged and he was left paralysed from the waist down. He now faces the rest of his life as a paraplegic in a wheelchair. You can imagine the impact this had on his family. He had to make alterations to his house to make it wheelchair friendly: widening doorways, installing ramps and replacing the downstairs bath with a shower and specially-adapted toilet. He had to sell his beloved collection of classic motorbikes and buy a car that could accommodate his wheelchair.

Becoming a paraplegic is a life-changing event. But my brother hasn’t moaned once. He’s kept his job, he’s learnt to play the banjo, he still goes to the pub (as long as there’s disabled access) and he drives a car. He’s always cheerful and he is an inspiration to me. He says that the Spinal Injuries Association has been very supportive, particularly in those early months following his operation when he was coming to terms with his paralysis. According to its website www.spinal. co.uk, SIA provide services to increase an individual’s quality of life, campaign for the best medical and social care for spinal cord injured people (this includes organising holidays for children with spinal injuries) and it is headed up by people who have spinal injuries themselves.

Just 150 years after the first Baptist Chapel in New Malden opened in Poplar Walk (now Poplar Grove), New Malden Baptist Church has returned to its premises at the junction of Kingston Road and Westbury Road following a major redevelopment programme.

During August and September, when the school was not available, the Baptist Church shared its Sunday services with St. Johns with each church taking alternate services over a six-week period. “Our new premises will enable us to do all the things we already do better” says Rev Johnny Pozzo, the Minister. “There are a lot of new systems to get used to and we are exploring ways in which we can use the premises effectively in the light of changes in local community services.”
The old church hall has been demolished and replaced by a new two-storey building; the main worship area has been refurbished; and the west end of the building has been redeveloped to provide modern offices. The current church building in the Kingston Road was opened in 1954 after the previous building had been destroyed by bombing in the Second World War. The Hall and offices were added later. The Hall and worship area were at different levels, making it difficult for disabled people to move between the two. Many of the facilities fell far short of modern standards. The redeveloped building has been designed to comply with the latest requirements for health and safety, disabled access and energy conservation. Neighbours watched with interest in November as the basic structure of the new two-storey hall was built in less than a fortnight using specially pre-fabricated sections. It provides facilities for the church’s many activities with children, young people and adults. It includes a new main entrance, a large multi-purpose hall, a modern kitchen, a lounge and crèche area and three upstairs meeting rooms. Redevelopment took place in three overlapping phases as funds became available. It started in April last year with demolition and rebuilding of the hall. Then the west end of the building was extended and redeveloped to provide modern offices for the Minister, Student Minister, Pastoral worker and Church Administrator. Then the main worship area was refurbished, including redecoration, new lighting, electrical, sound and projection systems. The redevelopment has shown how different churches can work together. Dear Local Resident, I wanted to write this month and tell you all about a recent operation. On Wednesday 14th September 2011 Beverley Safer Neighbourhood Team took part in Operation Tenpin which involved working with other local SNT officers and various different partners to focus on engagement and enforcement for the day. There was a number of different operations setup during the day including Automated Number Plate Recognition on Kingston Road, Revenue Detection Inspectors on Buses and at the train station checking tickets, Police Warrants in the New Malden area, Park patrols in Blagdon, Beverley and Green Lane Parks, RBK parking teams challenging Disabled Badges and issuing penalty fines for illegal parking around New Malden including ticket patrols around the Primary schools, a Community Payback team clearing rubbish in The Cut and a parking area by the Train Station, The Kingston Police licensing team done test purchases and licence checks in venues selling alcohol around New Malden, engagement stalls in the High Street offering crime prevention advice, a speed trap was setup by officers from the school’s team with Burlington Primary School Children in Burlington Road.
The biggest success was that no crime was reported on the day for the Beverley Safer Neighbourhood Team.
