Dear Readers

“We might be in the minority in Chez Stuart - in fact, the world! - but I have to admit that the ‘Village Voice’ HQ is essentially a football-free zone!! Yes, there really is very little world-cup action going on in our house this June / July - which might leave you thinking that we have very little to do / talk about or watch on the telly!! But....on the contrary! Thanks to the warm weather and long summer evenings, there’s quite a considerable amount of watering to be done, his self has been enjoying lots of quiet time on the allotment, my girls (initially bereft of their fave programmes due to skewed schedules) have been rediscovering the joys of bouncing on their trampoline and craft activities (what would we do without the phenomenon that is loom bands?) and I have been taking my pick of the best ‘box sets’ around (when not taking advantage of near empty shops and supermarkets the second the whistle blows at the start of an England match). By the time you read this, who knows what will be going on in Brazil, who will be in, who will be out! But as ever at this time of year, whatever happens this July, I’ll personally. be helping to ‘kick off’ the start of Malden Fortnight, making sure we score a real winner this year and pushing for extra time!! And, with the theme of ‘Carnival’ this year, I’ll at least be doing my bit to help the spirit of Rio live on in the suburbs...... So take the plunge, head over the a3 and join in the fun! Full details can be found on pages 32 & 33. Anyway, as always, a big thank you to everyone who has contributed and advertised this month If you’re a local business wanting to reach out to your local community then why not call for a chat about affordable advertising in your local community magazine. Remember, we deliver to most homes every second month so if you’re not able to pick up a magazine on the months it’s not delivered to you, you can read it on your smart phone/tablet or PC. Until next month, best wishes We also publish The Village Voice covering the KT3 postcode

Worcester Park History A summer afternoon in Cleveland Road by David Rymill

The area between Cleveland Road, Royal Avenue and St Mary’s Road, where development began in the 1860s, was originally occupied by two large houses and associated cottages and stables. Three-quarters of the land (excluding the portion nearest The Avenue) was occupied by a house originally known as Malvern Lodge, and its grounds. Orchard House and The Red Cottage, which are still standing, were originally part of this property. Malvern Lodge was originally the home, from about 1870, of Charles William Smith. By 1926 the house had been renamed The Grange, and was the home of Elwyn Russell Polden, chairman of the printing and publishing

firm Gale and Polden, perhaps best-known for publishing books on military subjects. His grandson Tony Sherrard recalls The Grange in the 1940s: “On entering the driveway the house was in front of you. On the right were two very tall trees – probably [Sequoia] sempervirens – Oregon redwoods. One could punch the trees hard without harm as the bark was thick and soft – but released a lot of dust. “On the left were the four-car garage block, chauffeur’s flat above and the old stable. The horses were sold before the Second World War but the paddock for them was retained being about two acres. The hall was large with a great fireplace and footman’s chair by the door – with the wide main staircase curling up to the family bedrooms. On the right was the drawing room and then the dining room. Straight in front was a passage to the conservatory – where orchids were grown and an old large grape vine – reputed to be propagated from the Hampton Court vine. It produced excellent white grapes. “On the left were the doors to a cloakroom, the study / library and the passage to the servants’ quarters. The latter consisted of the kitchen, pantry, store cupboard, game larder, dining room and sitting room off a small hall. There was a door to a steep stairway down to the large wine cellar – used as a bomb shelter. On the first floor were the bedrooms, and the top floor was a recreation room. The latter contained a full-size billiard table on the right and was surrounded with padded benches for spectators. On the left

7

was a piano, small dance floor and table tennis table. There were skylights around the sides of the top of the room. “The gardens were wonderful and very old. There were all sorts of fruit and vegetables. There was a wall facing the sun with peach trees trained on it. There were gooseberries, redcurrants, blackcurrants, Williams’ pears, Victoria plums, greengages, goldengages, asparagus, rhubarb, apples etc. There was a large greenhouse and glass frames for bedding out. At one time there were three full-time gardeners – in 1944 there was only one, a kind old man named Stanley. At the end of the garden on the left there was the Red Cottage, originally a gardener’s house. “There were large flower beds and I only remember them being planted for two years – tulips, geraniums etc. The main lawns were used for croquet and badminton in the summer. Behind the house on the left, there was a long line of brilliant crimson rhododendrons behind which was the tennis court – opened by Henri Cochet [a famous French tennis player]. There

8

was a large old oak tree reputed ‘to have been planted by Henry VIII. It was held up partly with a hidden scaffold and chains and at one time was pruned annually by Royal Commission’. This is a note written on a photograph dated 1927. “The house really needed a staff of about 10, but when I knew it there were only three very old retainers who were ready to retire. I am told that in the 1930s there were two gardeners, groom / chauffeur, butler, footman, valet, cook, kitchen maid and two housemaids. After the war

Please remember to mention Worcester Park Life when you speak to our advertisers

it was difficult to obtain materials for repairs, the roof leaked, no one was interested in domestic service any longer, and the cost of heating the house was very high. Also, the house was far too large for two people – so it was sold.” Russell Polden died in 1955, and by 1956 The Grange had been divided into two parts; it was redeveloped in the early 1960s. The stable and garage block was converted by the architect Greville S Rhodes into a house for himself and his family, and named Orchard House. Frances Wright, who did secretarial work here for Mr Rhodes in the 1960s, recalls “I was most impressed by one wall of the lounge because it was covered from floor to ceiling in books.” In a conservatory was a vine, and “I have a recollection of being told that the vine was 100 years old” which suggests it was planted around the time that Malvern Lodge was built. Our illustrations this month show The Grange from the garden in 1927, with a game of bowls in progress, and the side view across the croquet lawn, probably photographed from just inside the garden boundary near the corner of Royal Avenue and Cleveland Road.

RELIABLE

Charles Smith, the house’s first owner, was a great benefactor of St Mary’s Church, Cuddington. The church will be the venue on Saturday 12th July at 7pm for a concert by the Kingston and Malden Scout and Guide Band (www.kmsgb.org.uk). Tickets cost £7.50 and will be available on the door. The programme will range widely, from traditional marches to music from stage and screen, and it promises to be a great evening. A cream tea will be served at 6pm for an additional £5. Although there is no need to book for the concert, if you would like to attend the cream tea please book in advance via karljnicholas@aol.com or 07960 930673. St Mary’s is located at the top of The Avenue; there is plenty of car parking in the grounds, and the building (including wc) is accessible to wheelchair users. Look out for more details next time of a Heritage Open Day in St Mary’s on Saturday 13th September, 11am-5pm. David.Rymill1993@alumni.aber.ac.uk (020) 8330 6563

Ruth Jemmett Writes Rio’s riches and rags

This month Ruth Looks Behind The Façade Of World Cup Glamour As you read this, the World Cup will be reaching is final stages in Brazil. That country is a vibrant multicultural place, which will hopefully benefit financially from hosting this major sporting event on our planet, as it feels the glare of the international spotlight shining down on it for a few weeks. It certainly needs a financial boost, as it is estimated that 42% of its children live below the official poverty line. Behind the razzmatazz of a football extravaganza that will soak up millions of pounds, lies the sad fact that according to UNICEF 150,000 Brazilian children die annually mostly as a result of having been abandoned by parents who simply cannot afford to look after them. The streets of its major cities are filled with children who literally don’t have anybody who cares about them. Such is the national problem that Brazil’s Social Services cannot keep up with the demand for them to rescue youngsters from a life of crime, prostitution, or drug addiction. Many of the children are as young as eight years old. Those of us who have been watching television programmes over the past few weeks, which have illustrated the build-up to this four-yearly shindig, have been appalled by the images of youngsters being forgotten by the society around them. Some of Brazil’s inhabitants have staged protest rallies that question the wisdom of staging The World Cup in a country that simply cannot afford it, but their cries have fallen on deaf ears. We might occasionally moan about our lot here in Worcester Park, but by and large our much-maligned, and overloaded Social Services manage to deliver. Although Brazil has a similar support network, it struggles to keep up with the demands of its huge population. In England, although one-parent families are alarmingly common, children are rarely abandoned by both parents,, and if such a horrific thing happens we have the safety net

of Social Services that wouldn’t knowingly let a child be thrown on to the streets to be at the mercy of criminal adults. In Brazil, and particularly on the streets of the major cities that are hosting the World Cup, it is common-place to see very young children prostituting themselves, or selling drugs in order to eat. One of the major jobs of Brazil’s Social Services during this sporting tournament is to keep children away from football fans at the stadiums, but they simply do not have the resources to monitor such things. We cannot blame the children. We have to blame the society around them that has clearly got its priorities wrong. Child poverty is merely one symptom of Brazil’s financial meltdown. It also has another dark secret -its so-called Garbage Pickers. Relatively recently Brazil boasted - if that is the word

- the biggest rubbish tip on earth, Jardum Gramacho, which purportedly could was so big it could be seen from space. It was only after a television documentary about it was shown world-wide that the authorities were forced to shut it down. The programme exposed the fact that the rubbish tip, like dozens of others in Brazil, had hundreds of impoverished people, including countless children, scavenging all over it like human ants, and the revelation of such a thing to the world was deeply shaming. Although The Garbage Pickers of Jardum Gramacho are no more, countless other similar tips still exist in Brazil. Their pickers dwelling in unsanitary shanties nearby, and quite literally scrape a living from picking through other people’s detritus. It is estimated that one person in a thousand in Brazil is a Garbage Picker. What a terrible indictment of a so-called civilised nation - particularly when it boasts of a booming economy, and has created 19 new millionaires a A DAY since 2007. On 11th July it will be World Population Day, and it will be an apposite moment to ask: how is it that a country that is famous for Copacabana Beach, with its image of a luxurious lifestyle, can let so many of its own people live in such squalor? Quite simply, the answer is the influence of The Catholic Church, which has wielded its power throughout under-developed nations such as South America, for centuries. Its policy of frowning on contraception has meant that many countries throughout the world, including Brazil, have been unable to feed their large populations. As young Catholic child I had personal experience of its attitude. Just after my father deserted our home, leaving us destitute, a young local priest visited us. The priest (who, incidentally, later ran away with a young girl!) told my mother that ‘God will provide’. Unfortunately God DIDN’T provide - any more than my father did - and I developed malnutrition, which gave me lifelong health issues. I attended school with many Irish children, some of whom came from large Catholic families, many of whom suffered great poverty. Our story, here in cosy old England, was but a microcosm of what has happened - and is still happening - in many other places in our world. In an ideal existence, cosy families would

14

thrive in a healthy economy, but in the real world there are deserting fathers and unmarried mothers. Perhaps in the future, countries wishing to stage major sporting events should pass a sort of means test. In a domestic setting in a normal home we would condemn parents who would spend money intended for their children on entertainment. Surely when a whole country, such as Brazil, does precisely that, we should hang our own heads in national shame, for if we are party to ‘turning a blind eye’ to such suffering, we are surely guilty by association. As we cheer on football teams from the comfort of our suburban homes, we should remember that our pleasures come at a price. For countless Brazilian children, that price is their lost innocence, that has possibly been sold to a drunken football fan for the price of a meal. Ruth Jemmett is a Member of The Society of Authors

Cake and Bake

Peach gallette

This divine summer dessert just couldn’t be easier to make – no flan tin and no baking blind! Make sure you have a good solid baking sheet to bake the galette on as this will ensure a crisp pastry base. You can replace the fresh peaches with drained canned peaches, if liked. Serves 6 Ready in 50 minutes, plus chilling 225g plain flour, plus extra for dusting 150g unsalted butter, diced 100g ground almonds 4 tbsp caster sugar, plus extra for sprinkling 2 large egg yolks blended with 2 tbsp ice cold water 6 large fresh, ripe peaches, skinned, stoned and sliced Beaten egg, to glaze 1 tbsp pistachio nuts, chopped Vanilla ice cream, to serve

1 To make the pastry, sift the flour into a large bowl. Add the butter and using your fingertips rub it into the flour until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. Stir in half the ground almonds and half the sugar. 2 Make a well in the centre and add the egg yolks and water. Stir with a round-bladed knife to form a crumbly dough (add a little extra cold water if the mix is too dry). Gather the mixture together with your hands and knead gently until just smooth. Wrap the pastry in cling film and chill in the fridge for about 40 minutes. 3 Preheat the oven to 200C/400F/Gas mark 6. Lightly grease a large baking sheet. Roll the pastry out on a lightly floured surface to a rough circle about 30cm in diameter. Transfer to the baking sheet. 4 Sprinkle the rest of the ground almonds in the centre of the pastry circle, leaving a 7cm border. Arrange the peach slices on top of the almonds. Fold the pastry border inwards – just over the edges of the peach slices. 5 Brush the pastry edge with beaten egg and sprinkle over the chopped pistachios. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the pastry is crisp and golden.

View from the City A Banking Spring?

by Justin Urquhart Stewart

Only four years ago we all felt the demolition ball crash into much of the UK banking sector as banks collapsed and failed. Then we all saw the tawdry sight of those senior banking executives squirming in front of cameras or investigative committees as they had to try and explain away both the unjustifiable and the undeniable to the drooling media and populist politicians who relished the sight of suffering prey. This frankly had all the style of ravenous hyenas on the savannah. At least there were some senior banking executives, albeit very few, who had the courage to stand up and take the abuse, and even one or two (well one actually) who fully apologised for his organisation and laid out what should be done and what he would be doing about it. Not an easy thing to do when surrounding by such baying creatures. Sadly though our banking system is still hobbled, but at least our banking regulators are looking far more fit for purpose than the lumbering leviathan that was the FSA. Repair and recovery in the banking world will

take a long time and anyone wishing to hark back to the good old days is going to be sadly disappointed. The banking industry has changed forever - not just because of its former sins, but far more from the impact of technology and its subsequent effect on service innovation. This is not just the effect of online banking and the increased amount of automation - that has been on the cards for years - but the very basis of banking in terms of depositing and lending. There has been a steady growth of peer to peer lending and this is already having an impact in the commercial and personal market, but (in my view) far more importantly will be the growth of the poorly named “crowdfunding”. The opportunity for such properly organised structures into “private client regional investment” bodies could have a dynamic and potentially dramatic effect on local longer term investing. This in effect could bypass the banks for certain corporate lending and, for the first time in nearly twenty five years, allow local investors to properly invest in local businesses. This is already starting and the proposed launch

in September of the Alternative Business Funding Platform in Bristol which will bring together many of the alternatives that businesses might consider from crowdfunding, peer to peer lending and pension led funding. In effect this will create a mechanism for local investors to invest in local businesses in a variety of ways, via debt or equity, and in many respects almost reinvent the old Bristol stock market. These old markets closed down, with the last one going in Glasgow in 1992, and sadly with their demise local investors lost the connection for investment in local businesses. This disappeared primarily because the dominant London Stock Exchange saw them as local costs to support and their small volume of trading couldn’t justify their costs. That of course was to thus ignore the primary purpose of a stock market which is not to trade shares but rather to act as the most cost efficient method of raising capital for local businesses. Everything else is secondary, including trading. Because many of these local businesses were smaller companies, as would be very logical, the trading in their shares was hardly going to be frenetic. Also there was a realisation that most private shareholders are not day traders and in fact are the very opposite: most private shares holders tend to be longer term investors and holding periods of five to seven years were much

more likely to be the norm. In fact these were far more reliable investors than certain shorter term private equity of venture capital funds. Maybe this Bristol initiative could be the start of further regional developments in attracting local money into local enterprises. With roughly 6,000 new businesses starting in that area last year, that is quite a level of entrepreneurialism, so you need a far more radical common sense answer for such changes. Just think what a region could fund with, say 1,000 investors each willing to invest £10,000 - that’s £10 million. Not bad for retaining local investment in the area and if successful would likely encourage further external monies as well. I know a similar concept is being considered around Greater Sheffield, so perhaps we are truly seeing the start of a radical change - some more radical common sense. Justin Urquhart Stewart is one of the most recognisable and trusted market commentators on television, radio and in the press. Originally trained as a lawyer he has observed the retail market industry for 20 years whilst at Barclays Stockbrokers and developed a unique understanding of the market’s roles and benefits for the private investor

Gardening Mediterranean Magic

by Pippa Greenwood If you can’t get away this year, how about creating your own Mediterranean hotspot in your garden? Even if you do manage to escape to the sun for a week or two this year, you’ll still have the rest of the summer at home and a little slice of Italy, France or Greece outside your back door will bring happy memories flooding back. The first thing to do is to choose the sunniest spot available – it’ll not only make sitting out there more enjoyable, but will also mean that you can install some serious sun-loving plants too. Painting the nearby house, shed or garage wall with white masonry paint will help to create the right atmosphere and look. At the same time it will help to reflect our sunlight – often a bit washed out compared to more southern climes - so providing a stronger light for the type of plants that appreciate it. Mediterranean gardens often make full use of the walls and any other vertical surfaces, so put up hanging baskets, pots and wall baskets and cram them full of plants. Plants in pots are a must and if possible choose stone or terracotta containers. If you want to make brand new pots look more weathered try painting them with a solution of plain yoghurt as this will help to encourage rapid colonisation by mosses, algae and lichens. Any new hard landscaping such as wall, paths or patios and terraced surfaces will look best in natural stone and there are now also terracotta tiles available that are suitable for use in the garden. Terracotta tiles can also have a storageheater effect too – after a long, hot day they will have absorbed a good deal of heat and this will then be released gradually in the evening. Add interest to a vertical surface by planting a vine. They have attractive leaves and there are plenty to choose from that will fruit well in

34

our climate. You may not be able to create your own vintage but the vines will look particularly authentic when draped with a few bunches of grapes. Glazed tiles, wall-hangings and even the odd ornament or two can also add to the Mediterranean look, but make sure you choose items that won’t be instantly bleached by the sun. Try growing your own oranges or lemons. With our generally milder winters some gardeners are even managing to keep these plants outside all year round with only the minimum of protection. Growing your citrus tree in a good-sized terracotta pot means that you can move it into a more protected spot if necessary. With their wonderful silvery grey leaves and their often rather untidy or gnarled shape, olives too are a plant well worth considering. Olives are best grown in a large container unless you have a warm garden and a very well-drained soil as they hate winter wet. Some plants just spell out Mediterranean Magic – try geraniums and pelargoniums, aeoniums and sempervivums, rosemary, thyme, oregano and pretty well anything with silvery foliage. Go for the brightest coloured flowers and your new holiday destination will also benefit from a subtle Mediterranean aroma too. Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood.com for her ‘Winter thru’ Spring’ vegetable collection, great plants for September and regular advice emails from Pippa, and a super range of gardening products including Nemasys caterpillar, slug, ant and other biological controls, Enviromesh & Envirofleece

Mussel & Potato Chowder

I This filling meal-in-a-bowl makes a lovely weekend supper that’s ready in less than an hour. Most supermarket fresh fish counters sell bags of fresh mussels all year round, but if they are unavailable you can use 2 x 500g packs of mussels in white wine sauce and just reduce the fish stock to 300ml and omit the white wine. Serves 4 Ready in 45 minutes 1kg fresh mussels 1 tbsp olive oil 15g butter 4 shallots, peeled and finely chopped 2 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed 100ml white wine 2 baking potatoes, peeled and cut into small chunks 350ml fish stock made with ½ stock cube 200ml crème fraiche 4 tbsp fresh chopped flat leaf parsley Warm ciabatta or sour dough bread, to serve

1 First clean the mussels. Scrub under cold running water and discard any that are cracked or do not close when lightly tapped. Pull away the ‘beards’ from the sides of the shells. Place in a bowl and set aside. 2 Heat the oil and butter in a large deep saucepan or flameproof casserole. Add the shallots and fry gently for 5-6 minutes until softened. Stir in the garlic and fry for 1-2 minutes then pour in the wine and cook for a further minute 3 Add the potatoes and stir well. Pour in the stock and bring to the boil. Reduce the heat and simmer for 10-15 minutes until the potatoes are tender. Stir in the crème fraiche and half the chopped parsley and season lightly with salt and freshly ground black pepper. 4 Add the cleaned mussels to the pan and cover and cook for 3-4 minutes until the mussels have opened – discard any that remain closed. 5 Ladle the chowder into warmed bowls and garnish with the rest of the parsley and more ground black pepper. Serve with warm ciabatta or sour dough bread. TIP For a spicy Thai-style chowder, add 1 deseeded and chopped red chilli to the fried shallots and 1 bruised stalk of lemon grass to the simmering liquid. Replace the crème fraiche with 150ml coconut milk and the chopped parsley with coriander. Serve with steamed jasmine rice.

Voice for Wildlife Nature Trail

by Carol Williams By the time this goes out, and you get to read it, we will have had a nature trail for children in Shadbolt Park as one of the events at the Community Day on 28 June. We will not actually be taking them through the wildlife area that we have created there, but near and around it, looking for photographs of wild animals and plants posted in hiding places along the trail. Some of these live or grow in the park and some do not. So, this month, here, I will take you on a virtual nature trail through our wildlife area. Entering by the gate on The Paddock in Edenfield Gardens, you walk down the beaten track to your right, beneath the boughs of the swamp cypress and through the tall grass and native plants which have been allowed to flower and set seed here. We do very little to this area except pick up litter and fallen wood, although we have planted some vetch, foxgloves and primroses here and there to offer variety to the pollinating insects. With bees in such serious decline it is more meadow and patches of scrub that we need because the native plants are the best food source for them. Changing in farming practices over recent decades have damaged many insect populations both through spraying crops and grubbing up hedgerows and areas of rough grassland. To a small degree we can try to compensate for this by providing a banquet for them in our gardens and parks. It will require less mowing and interference from us. Letting be and quietly observing is the way forward. Coming round by the pond - surrounded by railings to keep out dogs and discourage trespass you will see that the bog garden is now full of Flag Iris and tall reeds along with many other plants that have either been put there when the space was created in 2010 or have since come in. Tiny frogs leaving the water in early Summer need dense cover to keep them safe from predators and they do not spend most of their lifecycle in the water, but in damp, dark places on land. Often when cutting back long grass they get disturbed and made vulnerable to predators like cats and crows. The water lilies on the surface of the pond are

44

now in flower and the oxygenating plants below the surface have grown into a thick forest. Some of this is native hornwort which we placed in there, and some is Canadian pondweed which probably came in as a tiny fragment on a lily that was given to us. Both are doing a wonderful job of keeping the water fresh for the wildlife. Without it the decomposing debris which regularly falls into the water (leaves, small twigs etc) would take all the oxygen and turn the water stagnant. On Saturday mornings in the Summer months we dip containers into the water and show visitors what lurks beneath the surface. We have young newts, larvae from many different insects and two types of watersnail. When the sun shines you may see damselflies on their aerial courtship dances, some blue, some red. If you take a walk around the pond, along the rough tracks that we try to keep clear through the brambles, you may spot many different species of wild flower among the long grasses and docks, depending on the season. In May we had a forest of cow parsley there. There are hidden, small beauties to look for - shy little flowers and many different insects. We have a diverse habitat in miniature in this park. Some people don’t like the ‘untidy’ look, but that is Nature - if you tidy it up too much you wil destroy most of it for wildlife. Brambles and nettles are valuable plants for insects and birds. In our little Reserve we have woodland and hedgerow, meadow and wetland, everything that our native wildlife needs. We would welcome some extra hands to help us maintain this spot. No experience necessay, just love. Come along and see us Wednesday or Saturday mornings between 10.30 and 11.30. Tasks include clearing the paths through the undergrowth, keeping down the brambles and other vigorous plants in places where we want a more open, sunny habitat, removing debris from the pond, picking up litter, creating wood piles for creatures to shelter beneath, cleaning and sometimes painting the notice board, talking to visitors about the wildlife, reporting any problems to the Ranger service etc. None of us are experts, we are all amateurs learning as we go and seeking advice from the Surrey Wildlife Trust when necessary. Do visit us soon!

The local resident, however, does not need to travel to London to appreciate some of Tudor history. An amazing model of the original Nonsuch Palace, built by Henry VIII to celebrate the birth of his son Edward – so important to the Tudor dynasty – is on view every every Sunday in the winter 11 – 2 p.m in the Gallery of the Mansion, Service Wing entrance, Nonsuch Park. The site is marked on the Northern side of the Park by three tall pillars which now stand as the only physical evidence of this amazing building. They are as three sentries guarding a bygone age. In addition, a unique and important collection of stained glass amassed by Samuel Farmer, owner of the present Mansion in the early 1800’s, features one particular panel commemorating the marriage of Jane Seymour to Henry VIII – only 11 days after the execution of Anne Boleyn! These are just a few of the treasures on view in the Nonsuch Mansion Service Wing Museum open on 2nd & 4th Sundays in the month (9th and 23rd) 2 – 5 p.m. Combined entry to Gallery & Museum £3.00, Concessions £2.00. Friends of Nonsuch Members & Children under 16 free. Entry only to Gallery £2.50. Last entry 4.30 p.m. www.friendsofnonsuch.co.uk”

Bourne Hall Museum Kids

We are the club for children 8 to 12+ who have an interest in history, and we are thriving at Bourne Hall Museum (Opens in a new window). We started in the middle of last year with a group of 17 at its first meeting and now we have between 30 to 40 children coming to each session, and more than ninety on our mailing list. We cover all periods of history from the dawn of the Stone Age to the Home Front and World War 2. Club members have learned how to make Stone Age tools and cave painting, found out what the trenches were like during WW1, joined the Roman Army, lived through the Dark Ages, re-fought the Battle

The Better Life The Joy of Camping by Derek Thompson

We Better Lifers love to bask in the reflected glory of a productive garden, water butts and compost bins all present and correct, and a house that whispers, “Eco-friendly.” However, come the summer (when we get one) a mania overtakes us; we succumb to the notion that leaving it all behind for a week or two under canvas is just what the doctor ordered. If the doctor were a sadist, that is. First there’s the frantic search for all the equipment you swore you’d never need again. The same equipment you helpfully dispersed into as many cupboards and rooms as possible. Then, when you’ve located everything – or given up the ghost and bought replacements – you draw up a to-do list for your neighbour: tend to the cat, irrigate the garden (it sounds much more accomplished than ‘water’) and fight the good fight against marauding molluscs. After that, with a clear conscience and green-tinted glasses, you can pack up and head into the wilderness. Well, a wilderness with a toilet block, shower facilities, recycling area and an Internet café. Okay, I may have exaggerated about that last one. What could be more relaxing than the peaceful sounds of the countryside? Although the dawn chorus – from nearby tents – of snoring, hayfever and other noises is like a trumpeting ensemble to the gods. Sometimes, when you tuck into your farmmade yogurt, seated on recycled wooden pallet benches, you can even catch harmonies. Those same delightful neighbours may wander back late from the village pub, drunk and incoherent, whispering louder than a jet engine. And what camping experience would be complete without the melodic drone of someone on a mobile declaring, “I’m in a tent – go on, guess where?” The Arctic, you may wish malignly. The weather, of course, conspires to keep you in a state of perpetual moistness. Whether it’s damp clothing – silly you for having brought only one pair of walking boots – or an unexpectedly warm summer evening, turning your camping fleece into a water-retaining sauna, you can be sure that the heady scent of sweat and disdain will linger in your nostrils for days to come. Making tea on an incline is like participating in a health and safety film. The groundsheet, thankfully, is waterproof, though not, alas, melt-proof. Still, it’s all part of living among the elements. There’s plenty of wildlife too and most of it is set on getting inside your tent. Not the birds though – they’re too canny for that. And besides, it’s much more fun to use your tent canvas for target practice! The days of alfresco eating (or wasp ballet), donating blood to the local mosquitoes and accidental nettle

stings – are there any other kind? – effortlessly blend and before you’re ready the last day arrives. The rubbish is removed, along with any litter you see on the way; the tent wrestled back into its bag and the postcards you forgot to send are posted on the way out. These are mostly to people you’ll be telephoning when you get home. Then, as you survey the pallid grass where your temporary home used to stand, one of you will amiably suggest that, all in all, it was great fun – same time again next year? Why not, the other will agree, adding an extra touch of citronella for the journey home, why not indeed? Safer Neighbourhoods Some GOOD news!

by PCSO Gary Weaving Hello everyone, The latest crime statistics for Worcester Park & Nonsuch Wards are testament to the hard work and excellent working relationship between the Safer Neighbourhood Team and the community for which it serves. Over the past 12 months there has been a reduction in the majority of crimes compared to the previous 12 months. These reductions have been measured in crimes that affect the community across the board such as Theft from Motor Vehicle (TFMV), where we have seen a significant reduction. Since the two arrests made earlier in the year, Worcester Park has seen a reduction in TFMV as the method used on most of the crimes matched with the one the pair were arrested for and since then the ward has not experienced this problem. Nonsuch has had a similar success in this crime, which was dealt with in a positive way by local initiatives and awareness covered by media publications and through local blogs and face to face community interactions. Robbery has never been a problem in the wards but with the two incidents experienced late last year this impacted on the figures, yet on the 12 month comparison there has still been a sizable reduction for both wards. Criminal Damage and Burglary have also seen a reduction over the 12 month period with a slight fluctuation in the last few months, which has seen an increase in plain clothes patrols and unmarked vehicles. Your local Teams in Worcester Park and Nonsuch have achieved these figures with relentless repetition in structured high visibility patrols (both uniform and plain clothes) at the relevant locations and times and endless crime prevention advice by way of leaflets, news letters, emails and of course within the pages of this magazine. It’s encouraging to see the strategy is working and although repetitive and tedious at times, it’s a motivational tool knowing that crime prevention patrols deter such activity and advice on vulnerabilities prevent further offences. We will continue to work hard to reduce crime, especially burglary in the Nonsuch ward which we hope will show a further reduction. You may have noticed in a previous issue of this

magazine that there are still some roads in Worcester Park (and also Nonsuch) where there is no Neighbourhood Watch (NHW) representation. We are presently busy posting membership forms in letterboxes in the hope to boost NHW membership in our wards as it has been proved that a strong NHW network helps to reduce crime. Please consider joining, it only has to be as time consuming as you want it to be. Every little helps, so to speak. If you would like a membership form please call 020 8649 3590 and leave a message for Gary.

JUNE 2014 UPDATE Information, Experience and Predictions By the time you read this World Cup fever will be well and truly upon us and England’s chances of victory will be clearer. The press is full of analysis, commentary and predictions with experts out in force. Depending on whose point of view you read England has no chance, some chance or every chance of winning the trophy. Its speculation, based on sensible deduction, but nevertheless opinion rather than fact. Some opinions are, of course, more informed and consequently more likely to be borne out than others. All we can do is cross our fingers, and toes, then watch with the rest of the country. Closer to home we note the pundits were spot on with their favourite to win the Derby this year, though the weathermen weren’t quite so accurate. Derby day was deliberately quiet in our office and a welcome breather from what has been an exceptionally busy month. Whilst we could easily have filled the day with viewings we knew traffic would probably be atrocious in the area and long experience tells us that a fraught drive to a viewing never enhances a buyer’s enthusiasm for a property. With more and more buyers escaping the heated London property market to find in our area we are ever mindful of ensuring their journey does not adversely colour their judgement. We want viewers to leave excited, planning where furniture is going to go, rather than dreading their return journey. But back to the topic in hand and property valuations which are, ultimately, a prediction of what will entice buyers to view a property and what they will pay for it. Sometimes all the ‘players’ in a situation are well known and the likely outcome is consequently more certain. We draw upon over 25 years’ experience of the local market to determine values and have one more vital piece of information. Over the past 3 months we have sold more property than most agents have listed, by quite some margin. For every property sold at least one, and often several, buyers missed out. We know exactly what they are looking for and how eager they are to find. That information can be key in achieving both a quick sale and the best price for our vendors, sometimes within hours of instruction. Meanwhile London prices continue to forge ahead at headline rates of 17% per annum. For many that level of rise is unaffordable and consequently they look for better value elsewhere. Initially that leads to prices rising in areas very close to the best commuter links, and from there the effect spreads out to the surrounding areas. However it is not necessarily a unified effect across all property types. Locally all properties have increased in value but whilst some have risen by 10-12% there are combinations of location and property type achieving 25% increases on last year’s value. Current headlines are full of contradictory prophecies with some believing the current boom will continue into 2020 and beyond, and others expecting the bubble to burst soon. Our observation is that the wave of price increases continues to wash through the area and shows no sign of losing momentum. There are still areas, such as Chessington, where the full impact has yet to be reflected but is almost certainly very imminent indeed. 
