Welcome to YOUR Worcester Park Life From the start of the first lockdown, homeowners have been undertaking improvement projects. Either through lack of skill or the need for specialist services such as plumbers, electricians, carpet fitters etc, at some point an expert will be needed to get to the finishing line. You’ll hopefully find said expert in these pages but there’s a problem rearing up. Shortages. Across the building trade, wholesalers are reporting issues in their supply chain for wood, cement, steel and other materials. There are several factors including Brexit, the pandemic and the Suez Canal blockage earlier this year, but surprisingly, the biggest cause of shortages is demand. What isn’t being spent on holidays is going into building a little oasis at home. The other shortage is of skilled tradespeople.

& Since ‘08

from jenny@maldenmedia.co.uk

Again a number of factors, but really worth flagging up. If you are a homeowner with big dreams, pick up that phone now or you’ll be at the back of a long queue. If you are skilled tradesperson and are available for more work, this magazine is a great place to let people know about your business. If you’d like to advertise or have a local story to tell, please call or email. Even away from the home, Fortune magazine recently reported that the world is seeing a surge in demand for semiconductors leading to a global chip shortage. This affects industries such as automotives, smartphones, computers and even many home appliance manufacturers. “Make do and mend” might be your only option rather than an eco-choice. Remember, we deliver to most homes every second month but if it’s not delivered to you, you can read it on your phone, tablet or PC. Until next time, very best wishes,

Worcester Park History A sporting centenary by David Rymill On 7th April 1921 about 50 men, mainly ex-servicemen, met in the St Philip’s Girls’ School premises (at the top of Central Road, opposite the present Cheam Common schools) and agreed to take a lease of some land near Worcester Park Station, which had been offered as a sports field, and to form the Worcester Park Athletic Club, with cricket, football, tennis and bowls sections. Later that year, on 22nd October, WPAC was formally established at another meeting in the school; ex-servicemen made up a large part of the early membership, and it was announced that a grant had been secured from the United Services Fund towards laying out Skinners Field, the land between Green Lane and the railway line which remains the Club’s home a century on. In 2016 David Stemp, who has been playing for the Cricket Club since 1972, noticed the approaching centenary, and decided to write a commemorative history. His intention was to record the cricket section’s history from 1921 to the present day. His book has now appeared, running to 310 pages, but it is a very different book from the one he initially planned: it is not until page 289 that he reaches the original starting-point of 1921. He discovered that 1921 was by no means the beginning of the story, because the club formed in that year was an amalgamation of the existing Cheam Common Cricket Club and Worcester Park Football Club, which already had long histories. As his research progressed he realised that there was a complex web of cricket and football clubs with Worcester Park, Cuddington, Malden, Cheam Common and Cheam in their names, and he began to write a book telling the story as far as the amalgamation in 1921. One hopes that in due course he will continue the story to 2021. David’s early research focussed on match reports in the Surrey Comet, but the availability of digitised versions of many different newspapers has enabled him to discover local sporting references going back to the 1840s: in August 1843, among the earliest being a report of a cricket match between the Gentlemen and Players of Cheam.

6

The first reference David has found to a cricket match in the present KT4 area dates from September 1843, when 11 players chosen by a Mr Madgwick and 11 chosen by Mr Taylor (perhaps Henry Taylor, a local carpenter), played at the Drill Inn Ground. In July 1851 Worcester Park played Malden, at Worcester Park – possibly in the grounds of Worcester Park House, between Old Malden Lane and Grafton Road. Intriguingly, David suggests that one of Cuddington’s famous PreRaphaelite artistic visitors in 1851 may have played for Worcester Park against Malden on 7th September that year, in a match which brought together several agricultural labourers, a member of the Weeding family who owned the mansion Fullbrooks in Malden, the Curate of Malden, and individuals whose identity may not be established with certainty but may include a wheelwright or cooper, a carter at the gunpowder mills and a member of the family who owned the mills. Organised local cricket clubs, as distinct from ad-hoc teams, can be found at least as far back as the 1860s in Cheam – and there is one intriguing reference to a ‘Cheam Nonsuch Club’ in 1861. From the early 1870s reports appear of a Cuddington or Worcester Park Cricket Club, the two names perhaps being used interchangeably for a single club; the team included a number of residents of the newly-built houses in The Avenue, and members of the Millward dynasty who undertook a variety of commercial and official roles based at the Post Office in Park Terrace. Cheam Common Cricket Club, the most direct forerunner of today’s WPCC, began in 1872, and David describes the roles played in its formation by the Revd Reginald Bigg-Wither, Curate of Cheam Common at the time when the construction of St Philip’s Church began, and Francis Pennington, licensee of the Drill Inn, who provided the original ground; it was possibly in the 1890s that they moved to a field near Lindsay Road, the move perhaps being associated with a growing link to the North End Tavern.

A separate Old Malden and Worcester Park Cricket Club was formed in 1892; its early members included a significant number from the Idmiston Square area, some from Church Road in Old Malden, and some from Cheam Common Road, Lincoln Road and Longfellow Road. David devotes a chapter to the story of this club; it was not revived after the First World War, but a number of its members would take on prominent roles in the Cheam Common club. A further chapter explores the Worcester Park connection of the renowned cricketer W G Grace who followed the local Beagles for about ten years. Worcester Park Football Club, another of the constituent parts of WPAC as set up in 1921, dates its formation to 1900. For its first four seasons, the club hired a meadow from Mrs Pennington of the Drill Inn, moving in 1904 to a larger ground in Lindsay Road, thanks to Andrew Blake, whose initials can still be seen on the terrace of houses which he built in that road.

Members of the Blake family, and other residents of Longfellow Road, were prominent members of the football and cricket clubs both before and after 1921. Tennis fans may be intrigued to know that this sport also has a history in Worcester Park dating back well before 1921: Worcester Park Lawn Tennis Club’s first known match was held in 1879. The Vicar of St John’s, Old Malden, the Revd William Chetwynd Stapylton, was the President, and his sons Edward and Frederick were among the leading members; the club’s grounds appear to have been at Edward’s home, Wighill, off Old Malden Lane. David Stemp’s book is, therefore, not a history of a single sports club, but a survey of the sporting history of Worcester Park, Cheam Common and nearby areas from the 1830s to the 1920s. A history of local sport might have consisted largely of the minutiae of wickets, runs and goals, and such details can

indeed be found here, but David has chosen a much broader canvas, depicting the lives of many of the players off the pitch as well as on it, so even if you have a minimal interest in sport you can still enjoy this book as a portrait of the social spectrum in and around Worcester Park throughout Victorian times and in the first two decades of the 20th century, as a demonstration of the ways in which the genteel Victorian commuters from The Avenue could mix with their working-class neighbours on the sports field, and for its brief biographies of the fascinating lives of numerous local residents, and the dynastic links between their families. Signed copies of David A Stemp’s The Sporting Origins of Worcester Park Athletic Club are now available for a £15 donation (cash only) at Khushi’s Cards, Stationery and Party Shop, 117 Central Road, Worcester Park KT4 8DY (the stationery, party and balloon shop with the yellow façade, formerly Fowlers’, nearly opposite Caldbeck Avenue) and Steve’s Card Shop, 505 London Road, North Cheam, SM3 8JR (at the Queen Vic crossroads). As this year is also the centenary of the Royal British Legion, these two shops are generously donating £5 from each sale to the Legion. Copies are also available direct from David Stemp at 27 Netley Close, Cheam, Sutton, Surrey SM3 8DN (plus £3 p&p if required; cheques payable to Mr D A Stemp, or ring 07765 822990 or email david.stemp@ virgin.net if you would like to collect a copy or to arrange to pay by bank transfer). For the Cricket section of the club the highlight of the centenary celebrations will be on Wednesday, 4th August, when they host a team from the M.C.C. Our illustrations this month are team photographs of Cheam Common Cricket Club, 1913, and Worcester Park Football Club, 1921-2, along with the cover of David Stemp’s book. The Club is active in community affairs with members volunteering to support various local charities: this support can range from knitting poppies and Easter bunnies to maintaing public flower beds and helping the less able with shopping trips. Whilst we work hard to raise funds through Bingo, coffee mornings, afternoon teas and stalls in local markets etc., entertainment and social events are just as important and now COVID regulations are easing, we are already looking ahead by booking visits to gardens, theatres, museums, picnics and days out/holidays. We are a global organisation and visits and information is exchanged with sister clubs around the world. Buy to Let Hunter is a fresh approach to property purchase – we recently sat down with one of our early investors to catch up with him: Obviously, investing in anything is risky, but understanding that, Raffi feels he has enhanced his lifestyle greatly. His money is safe, he has a lovely spot for a free holiday that pays for itself, in fact it pays Raffi just to own it.

Raffi is a local business owner doing a great thing for the world – he arrived in Richmond with enough money for just 8 months. He followed a hunch and set up Bantam Materials - providing Prevented Ocean Plastic, recycling and collecting from atrisk coastal communities and creating a research centre on the Richmond Green – we think he is marvellous, and we are not the only ones! He just won: “Sustainable Initiative of The Year”. Whoop! Raffi realised that he wanted to invest in property but preferred a professionally managed structure run by trustworthy people to allow him the freedom to focus on the craziness in his own world. Raffi approached us and asked us to help. Through Buy to Let Hunter, Raffi has purchased a pure investment property and a holiday home in the Cotswolds which his family uses in conjunction with renting it out to paying guests.

Raffi says: “My kids have a pool, access to nature, the cottage overlooks a lake…. And it’s just an hour and a half from London.” “It’s absolutely no hassle…. The team at BTLH do absolutely everything, checking in guests, housekeeping, managing the calendar, making sure everything is perfect for my family and visitors. I just turn up. Oh, and cash the cheques!” “And I had no doubt I could trust Adrian after I met him. The single biggest thing is that my interests were ahead of our co-profit. So, I feel I can really trust any advice and I know my money is safe.” We do love a happy punter! If you think we might be able to enhance your life in the way we have for Raffi, please give us a call or visit our website to find out more about us.

Raffi says: “For me there wasn’t a second choice when I met the Buy to Let Hunter team. It was about working with someone trustworthy and when speaking to Adrian, one of the directors, a local guy, it was clear he was someone I could trust. I didn’t need to look any further. And my expectation has been more than met.” Can BTLH help you find the perfect property? Get in touch and have a chat: 020 7550 9396 or hello@buytolethunter.com. CALMER WATERS

INTERNATIONAL INTEREST

There are many reasons why people move home, but its usually a combination of factors that create the ‘right’ time. The surge we have seen over the last year has mainly been the result of 3 factors, Brexit pent-up demand, a temporary tax holiday and a sudden change in lifestyle leading to an urgent need for more, or at least different, space in the home.

Sometimes a small trend, comment, newspaper feature or TV programme shines a light on our area and has an unexpected effect on the local market. Most notably Kirstie and Phil’s 2005-2007 lists of the best places to live in the UK quickly increased interest. Since then, times have changed, and the range of media sources has expanded considerably.

As the stamp duty incentive is gradually withdrawn, we are entering new waters and it’s hard to know which way the tide will turn, but the atmosphere is slowly changing and we are seeing signs of what may be around the corner. Epsom and Ewell is an affluent area and many have found a lot of positives in Covid life. Working from home has been embraced by many leading to a more relaxed workday, little effect on income and several extra hours of leisure time snatched back from the daily commute.

Good ideas always have a habit of spreading to create clusters. For example, one household in a road may decide the time is right to move creating a ripple effect that results in three or four similar properties coming up for sale in the same road within a few weeks. We similarly see clusters of people looking. One person moves into an area and soon friends and family decide to follow. Over the last few months we have seen something less common, an international cluster that took us by surprise.

Not everybody has been so fortunate and a slow trickle of forced sales, due to mortgage arrears, is a reminder of that. At the same time, we are aware of renters who have been saving for years to buy but have been forced to eat into those funds significantly just to make ends meet over the last year. There has been something of a buying frenzy that we suspect has masked underlying trends and we have yet to see how those will impact the future of the market.

We know the benefits of the area but were intrigued by a large number of similar enquiries from one corner of the globe. Eventually we discovered it was all down to a single YouTube video. Apparently, the video was recorded a while ago by a wellknown social media influencer, and it promotes this area very well indeed. A relocation agent we spoke to seemed slightly fraught as she had clearly tried to persuade her clients that there are many similarly desirable spots, but conceded that our location, a mix of convenience and countryside, is very hard to beat. Whilst we are always aware that enquiries come from numerous sources, recommendation, local awareness, boards and the web, this is the first time we have noticed YouTube playing such a prevalent role. Times are changing.

Meanwhile there are still plenty considering their options and we are happy to help them gather the information they need to make the right decision for them. We believe the market looks set for a steady period ahead.

Craft and our wellbeing Our mental health has never been so much in focus as over the last year. Hobbies are what have kept us going and brought us joy as our worlds have shrunk down to the essential. Hobbies are essential. They make you happy. They give you an escape. I myself cannot imagine my life without crafting and walking my dogs. It’s what feeds my soul and keeps me sane. Craft has long been used to help with anxiety, during the First World War basket weaving was prescribed to relieve anxiety and physical ailments in soldiers. There has recently been a radical shift in government policy on mental health and wellbeing, which is fuelling a revival of these lost treatments. ‘For too long we have been fostering a culture that’s popping pills and Prozac, when what we should be doing is more prevention’ Said health Secretary Matt Hancock in a recent speech. So how does it help? Completing a project from start to finish gives you a great sense of accomplishment. The joy is priceless and is what gives you the incentive to continue and improve!

Some repetitive crafts such as Knitting, embroidery, colouring and crochet are fantastic at achieving the ‘flow’ state as in meditation but all craft activities can be included as an act of mindfulness – ‘being in the moment’, the act of concentrating on an activity, relaxing and unwinding and providing a healthy distraction all help to improve mood and reduce stress hormones. Crafting lowers blood pressure, reduces depression and anxiety, slows the onset of dementia, distracts from chronic pain and can help reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s. And craft classes and clubs are a fantastic environment for meeting new people and boosting your self-worth and happiness. Crafting together reduces loneliness and isolation and increases the sense of usefulness and inclusion in society. So why not try a new craft yourself? Who would have thought sitting about drinking tea and crafting would be as beneficial as yoga!?! Rachel xx Craft My Day.com

Parkin’ some thoughts Damned either way

by Nick Hazell

Life, someone said, is a paradox. You’re damned if you do as much as if you do not. The results of the Summer holiday planning in the Hazell household have done little to disprove the theory. Normally the prospect of foreign adventure is something to which we all look forward. However, tempting though it may be to consider fleeing the country now that the options extend beyond Gibraltar and The South Sandwich Islands, the risk of the Government suffering from another sudden bout of colour blindness and designating what was once green as red, is for me at least, one not worth taking even if I am powered by a full tank of vaccine. Finding somewhere on these shores though has proved quite tricky, not least because I don’t particularly wish to sell my organs to medical science to fund a week’s stay in a beach hut. The prices are indeed enough to make an onion weep. As a family, we (or rather Anna and I) don’t do camping unless there is a hotel involved. Even if we did, those less canvas-ly inept than us have taken all the good spots, leaving a field behind a pub in Ipswich advertising its “facilities” as a tap as the best of what remains. My suggestion of a canal boat holiday was then, perhaps rightly, vetoed by Mrs H who reminded me of our last trip which drove her to the edge of a breakdown, gave the children lasting nightmares and involved a four hour wait for an ambulance. We are therefore a picky bunch when it comes to holidaying. We can all want different things, so finding a location which keeps all of us happy is difficult and near impossible when set against the dwindling options that have resulted from most of us being locked up so so long. So, after all of our COVID-safe considerations and concerns about being exposed to a super spreader vacation venue, where have we ended up? Cornwall... I mean really? Not only is it likely to separate from Devon and fall into the channel due to the weight of tourists arriving within its

22

boundaries, but it has itself become a plague ground. According to my reliable reference source, the Sun, coronavirus cases have tripled in the last week as the early holiday season begins and some of the locals have been enhancing the area’s welcoming credentials by putting up signs that say, “F*** off, tourists.” Charming. I suppose the point is that although some of us may be damned if we do and damned if we don’t, sometimes it’s just not worth worrying about. It’s better to like what we decide to do, rather than think about what we should have done. That’s what I’ll be doing in Cornwall.. in a mask.. under an umbrella.. in a queue.. surrounded by protesters. At least I won’t be in a tent....

Health Knowing the right time for care It has recently been Dementia Action Week and across the country organisations have been raising awareness about the disease, how it affects people who are living with it and the support that is available within the community. Dementia is a degenerative disease and as such, people living with dementia will require increasing levels of care as the disease progresses. However, all those living with dementia will experience the disease in a very different way. Knowing when care should begin, what that care should look like and who should deliver it are all concerns that many people have. Knowing when to reach out for additional support can often be the most difficult step. Unless you are living with this person day in and day out, it can be difficult to gauge whether a person is coping or not coping, as most of us are very able to put on the best version of ourselves when we see those that we love for short periods of time.

may need then there are a wide range of local organisations who are ready to support you. By Clare Jefferies of Home Instead Wimbledon & Kingston

You may know someone who is beginning to struggle with tasks which used to come naturally to them. These could be things like paying bills on time, preparing meals and dressing themselves correctly. In these early stages it may be that this person is unwilling to accept support. Living independently is a skill built up over a lifetime, and one that is not easily relinquished. So, it may be that this first step of support isn’t to introduce a ‘carer’, but possibly a cleaner or someone to help out around the house. When the time does come for a carer to be introduced, it can be a hard choice to know who this person should be. Often partners and children will have been giving the support for a long period of time already and asking for additional support can feel like they are falling short of what their loved one needs. But bringing in a professional carer can transform the quality of living for all involved. Whether a carer is part-time, full-time or live-in, this person can offer an incredible release and help maintain and protect loving relationships as care becomes more intensive. If you are concerned about a loved one and have any questions about the support they, or you,

Could you be our next Glynne? Changing professions was the best thing I ever did. I joined Home Instead in June 2018. After my training I was introduced to my first client, whom I still visit. She is such an interesting person and has done so much in her 90 years. In September 2018, I met another client. The first time I met Jack I was very impressed. I could not believe this man was 100! This was the start of an amazing friendship and journey that has taught me so much about myself and what a difference I can make in someone else’s life. Through our time together, Jack has become a valued friend and a big part of my life. It is a great joy for me to see what a difference I have made and how appreciative he is. I help Jack with lots of his daily needs including help with his showering and dressing, to making him meals or simply reheating the heating pad to ease his back pain or accompanying him to his various appointments.

Jack keeps on saying how lucky he is that I came into his life, but it is me who is the lucky one.

Would you like a job like Glynne’s? Give our recruiter a call on 020 8942 4137 or email laura.hillier@homeinstead.co.uk to see if CAREGiving is something you could do too! Each Home Instead® franchise office is independently owned and operated.

Friday Night Cocktail Club When life gives you lemons make a Sgroppino by Ali Warner There is something about making a cocktail that turns it from a drink into something special . It could be the shakers or the use of posh glasses and various accoutrements but often people think that it requires effort and ingredients that will end up going dusty in the back of the cupboard.

In Venice, your waiter might make this drink at your table by beating the sorbet and wine into a mixture as refreshing as whipped snow. And if you fancy adding a bit of showbiz to the night’s entertainment, well what better way to keep your bingo wings at bay.

But I’m here to tell that that doesn’t have to be the case. You don’t need a shaker or posh glasses or 27 ingredients or loads of time to treat yourself at the end of week that has left you frazzled or to add a flourish to an occasion with a cheeky crowdpleaser.

But if time is the essence, you can prep this cocktail to perfection in 10 minutes or less.

In fact, I pretty much guarantee that if you make this cocktail, those you serve it to will ask for the recipe or be very willing takers if you suggest they might consider a top-up. During Lockdown 2 a friend and I exchanged cocktail recipes for each of the 12 days of Christmas and this one - which only has three ingredients - was the favourite by a country mile. It’s called Sgroppino al Limone and it’s believed to have got its name from the Venetian word Sgorpãre which means loosening or to loosen. No, not like that you filthy lot - it was served between courses to aid digestion and cleanse the palate. This is a lovely versatile cocktail. It’s perfect as an aperitif or served as a delicious after dinner drink. In fact with a little bit of forethought it can also be served as a dessert providing a light ending to alfresco summer meal. And the best thing about this impressive cocktail is that its ingredients are not too expensive and not too hard to find. And if you don’t use them all up on this drink, you’ll definitely find other ways to use them. Because all you need to make it is Vodka, Prosecco and Lemon Sorbet. Essentially the Sgroppino al Limone is an adult slush puppy.

26

How to make a Sgroppino al Limone For 4 drinks you’ll need 200 mls ice cold Prosecco 120 mls cold vodka 4 scoops of lemon sorbet Put four champagne flutes into the fridge to chill Add four generous scoops of lemon sorbet to a medium-sized bowl and whisk the mixture until it’s a smooth consistency. Gradually whisk in the vodka and prosecco. You can use a blender - but whisking it with a hand whisk is better as it will mean the mixture doesn’t become too liquid. You don’t want it too thick but you don’t want it too thin either. If it looks like a milkshake - you’ve got it just right. Pour your lovely lemony, slushy cocktail into the chilled champagne flutes and serve to your guests immediately. (If you leave it too long it may separate.) If you are feeling extra fancy you can sprinkle a little bit of lemon zest on top. If you want to use the ingredients as a dessert rather than serve it as a drink, all you need to do is miss out the whisking and just add a ball of sorbet to a dish and pour the mix of vodka and prosecco over the sorbet and serve with a sprinkle of fresh mint leaves or lemon zest. And now for your final and most important job. Find a comfy seat. Sit back. Relax. And enjoy the icy, citrusy hit. Slainte.

Smart Gardening by Pippa Greenwood

If you want to have more time to relax in and enjoy your garden and perhaps fancy cutting down on the hard labour, there’s plenty you can do to make sure that you have a lighter workload. Soil Condition Get your soil in good condition before you plant. By digging in bulky organic matter such as compost, well-rotted manure or leaf mould you will improve the soil’s fertility and its ability to hold moisture and stay in good shape, potentially saving you a lot of time over the coming months and even years.

Big Containers Containers are lovely, and deservedly have a lot of appeal, but they make for a lot more work than when you grow the plants in the flowerbeds. In a container they are totally dependent on you for food and water (if it doesn’t rain constantly!). Easy-care Bulbs Grow lots of bulbs: bulbs, whether for spring display (planted in the autumn) or summer display (planted in spring), are great labour-saving plants, as once planted they simply keep on and on appearing each year, with little need for care. In the current warmer climate even those plants like dahlias, gladioli and tulips – which traditionally were lifted and replanted each year – often seem able to withstand the winter without the need for this effort. Perennials Grow lots of relatively short herbaceous perennials i.e. plants that come up in the spring, die back late in the season then reappear next spring. They are much more low-effort flowers than annuals, which need

through until the following year, with no need for you to keep replacing them. Shrubs Shrubs, too, are great plants, as once established they need little effort and often provide colour and interest for more than one season. If you want to minimise your input even further, go for shrubs such as Chaenomeles, rhododendrons and azaleas, deciduous cotoneasters and Magnolia stellate, which need little, if any, pruning. Ground Cover Grow ground cover plants – either herbaceous perennials or low-growing shrubby plants. These don’t need a lot of maintenance and will soon cover bare soil, meaning that there is less weeding needed. Dense groundcover will also reduce evaporation from the soil and so makes for less watering time. Plants such as Cistus x hybridus, lavenders and rosemaries work well on a dry site. Other good choices include hypericum, Euonymus fortune and Cotoneaster dammeri. At www.pippagreenwood.com you’ll find a range of pet-and-wildlife-friendly bio-controls, Speedweeders, the fantastic SpeedHoe, signed books and more.
