Welcome to Your Worcester Park Life November begins with our wedding anniversary followed closely by Guy Fawkes night which conveniently falls on a Saturday this year. Let’s hope for a dry night as nobody likes a soggy rocket! And the fireworks will be hotting up in the lead up to the climax of the US Presidential election campaigns which will be dominating the worldwide news. Who knows what’s going to happen. Worcester Park Life rarely gets involved in political debates because dogs shows and baking competitions give us more than enough controversy to deal with. However, now that New Malden’s FountainGate has dried up, could the organisers not get involved and sort the democrats and republics out. Methinks the US need a very big naughty step and some quiet time. Right, I’m off to finish series 7 of the West Wing (finally!) Remember that Worcester Park Life is YOUR magazine so if you are helping to organise an event and would like some FREE publicity then please do email details. Likewise if you are part of an organisation that could benefit from attracting new local members next year then why not send in an article. We’ve been successfully going for over 100 editions now so must be doing something right! Thanks so much to everyone who has advertised and contributed - and to you for reading and supporting our advertisers. You may or not know that in order to deliver the magazine to most of Worcester Park, we split the distribution over a two month period. So if you have had this edition delivered you probably won’t get the January one. There are a limited number of copies available from Waitrose, the libraries, Manor Drive surgery, St Marys and also Christ Church with St Philip but don’t forget that it is also published online - you can get the link from our website. So, until next month, best wishes,

Jenny

Worcester Park History by David Rymill As we approach Remembrance Sunday we commemorate the members of the armed forces who died in 1916 and are named on the three war memorials in Worcester Park: in St Mary’s Church, Cuddington; outside St John’s Church in Old Malden; and at the entrance to St Philip’s Churchyard in Cheam Common Road. This year there have been commemorations of the Battle of the Somme, which began on 1st July 1916 and continued for 141 days. Over the course of the battle more than 95,000 troops from Britain and the Empire died, including over 19,000 on the first day alone. Casualties in early July included Private Proctor Wells of the Middlesex Regiment, who is named on the Old Malden memorial, and gave his address as 1 Pond Cottages [in Church Road, opposite the Plough Pond] on enlisting in February 1916. Private Wells is one of more than 70,000 British Empire servicemen who died at the Somme and have no known grave but are commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial. The same memorial includes the name of Private Robert Doel from 50 Longfellow Road, a brickmaker who had joined up in April 1915 aged 19, and was recorded as missing, presumed killed, on 3rd July, while serving in The Queen’s Regiment. Yet another Worcester Park man recorded on the Thiepval Memorial, Lt Lionel Duncan Stanbury, joined the East Surrey Regiment and was attached to the Machine Gun Corps; he was recorded as missing from 7th July. He was one of the sons of John and Emma Stanbury who lived at a house named Willowhayne in the London Road, later replaced by Willowhayne Gardens and part of Leicester Close; it was not until the following March that his death was officially recorded by the War Office.

6

Last year I mentioned Captain Alec Vaughan Thomas who was killed at Gallipoli on 6th August 1915, and who was the elder son of the architect John Alick Thomas and his wife Kate, who lived

at The Croft, 50 The Avenue. His brother Lt Maurice Wotton Thomas was educated at Parkside School, on the site of Timbercroft, and was sent to Osborne College in 1906 to train for the Navy, but was invalided out through illness in 1910. He recovered, and in 1914 joined the Royal Field Artillery. His obituary in The Times records that in July 1915 “it was decided that he was specially qualified by his training for the Royal Flying Corps [forerunner of the RAF], to which he was seconded as an observer. After many thrilling experiences he was wounded in an accident in December 1915 and came home. He made a speedy recovery and was sent to a reserve squadron and gained his wings. In May 1916 he was again sent out, doing much valuable work over the enemy positions.” He was presumed killed while flying over Bapaume, one of the strategic objectives in the Battle of the Somme, on 5th August 1916, one day before the first anniversary of Capt Thomas’s death. Like his brother, he is named on both the Cuddington and Old Malden memorials. He is shown in one of our illustrations this month, reproduced by kind permission of the Royal Aero Club Trust. Two of the men named on the Cuddington memorial, both of whom were already in the Royal Navy at the outbreak of war, died at sea in 1916. Albert James Guyton, son of Albert Guyton of 1 Hampton Villas, Hampton Road, was born in Portsmouth in 1898 and became a Boy (2nd Class) at HMS Ganges, a shore establishment, in 1913 aged 15. He joined HMS Invincible in March 1915, and was promoted Ordinary Seaman in July that year. Invincible served as the flagship of the 3rd Battlecruiser Squadron during the Battle of Jutland, and was sunk on 31st May 1916; only six of more than 1,000 officers and men survived. A photograph of Albert James Guyton can be seen at livesofthefirstworldwar.org/lifestory/6306064

Please remember to mention Worcester Park Life when you speak to our advertisers

On the following day HMS Ardent was also sunk at Jutland. Signalman Percy James Wilmot, who is named on the Cheam Common and Cuddington memorials, was born on 26th June 1896 and was a member of the Wilmot family of Stoneleigh Cottage, one of the villas in Central Road (then part of Cheam Common Road) between Windsor and Balmoral Roads. The house can be glimpsed in our other illustration, to the left of the five gables between the two telegraph poles. In 1911 he was living at home and was listed as an apprentice motor and cycle engineer; he joined HMS Impregnable, another training establishment, as a Boy (2nd Class) in February 1913, and in October that year became a Signal Boy. He was promoted Ordinary Signalman in June 1914 and Signalman in February 1915. On 10th May 1916 he was posted to the base ship HMS Hecla and was assigned to HMS Ardent, less than a month before she was sunk. The most distant commemoration of a Worcester Park serviceman from 1916 is probably that of L-Cpl Thomas Dalton, a civil service clerk from ‘Montrose’, Moreton Road, who died in about October 1916, as a prisoner of war, and is commemorated at the Baghdad (North Gate) War

Ruth Jemmett Writes A Journey Through November November, the eleventh month of the year was the ninth month of the Roman calendar, and is derived from the Latin word ‘novem’ meaning nine. The last leaves from deciduous trees fall this month. Now is the time to get to grips with untidy gardens. As the wonderful poet Liz Cowley summed it up: ‘ I wander lonely as a cloud, Around my garden, now a mess, The only tasks that I’m allowed Are those that bore me, bring distress. I wander angry, mood now black To fill another plastic sack.’

As the weather gets more chilly squirrels are visiting us more frequently here in Salisbury Road. We always buy nuts for them, but instead of eating them they like to bore holes all over the garden and deposit them in there, much to my annoyance! A heron has become a regular visitor, and recently took a fish from neighbour Steve’s pond. It’s presence is usually heralded by the cawing of rooks, as they circle round this huge bird, trying to catch any tit-bits it might drop.

According to weather experts, a cold November could indicate a mild wet winter. Whichever way the wind blows, not many of us look forward to doing garden chores at this time of the year. It is very tempting to grab a large rake and to boldly lunge into piles of dead leaves. We must, however, be mindful that hedgehogs often make their homes in such places. In the last twenty years their numbers have declined by 50%, which is quite alarming. Apparently this is due to the fact that many of us like very neat gardens, and don’t give them messy nooks to hibernate in. Also, security minded people erect inpenetrable fencing, so that our spiky friends cannot wander from garden to garden seeking mates. If you ARE lucky enough to come across a Mrs Tiggywinkle, remember that a saucer of bread and milk isn’t necessarily good for them. Cat food is, apparently, much better for them. Sweeping up garden debris is also part and parcel of building a bonfire for 5th of November - Guy Fawkes Night. The reason we mark this day is because of the so-called Gunpowder Plot in 1605. This was a plot by some English Catholics to place gunpowder underneath The House of Lords, where the king was due to be. The plot failed, but tradition dictates that when a new session of parliament is due, the basement is searched - just in case! The late great comedian Frank Carson once famously said: “Bonfire Night normally marks the start of Christmas Shopping - unless you’re a man then it starts on Christmas Eve!” Many famous people were born in November, including Marie Curie and June Whitfield. Marilyn Monroe also celebrated her birthday this month. One of her claims to fame was that when she was

filming ‘Some Like it Hot’ her attempt to say the line “Where’s the bourbon?” necessitated 59 takes!

This year Remembrance Sunday will fall on 13th November. It originated at the end of The First World War, and was marked by having two minutes’ silence at the eleventh hour of the eleventh dy of the eleventh month. Moving words by Laurence Binyon still resonate with us as much as they ever did: ‘They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sunn and in the morning We will remember them’…… The wearing of artificial poppies in memory of fallen soldiers has become a tradition at this time of the year. Pacifists often refuse to wear them, but it is wise to remember that many of the pacifists wouldn’t be alive now if it hadn’t been for the bravery of others.

society is becoming increasingly secular, children still enjoy opening their Advent Calendars. I unearthed my Christmas file recently, and felt that familiar lurch in the stomach as I surveyed what has to be done! On 30th November it will be St Andrew’s Day. He is the patron saint of Scotland, Patras in Greece, and Russia. He was crucified on an X-shaped cross in Patras, a shape that is on the Scottish flag in memory of him. As regular readers might remember I have been supporting a child called Komal in India for several years , with the help of a wonderful charity called World Vision. She is now twelve years old. At this time of the year I start gathering Christmas gifts to send her, and it gives me tremendous pleasure to receive ‘photos of her, and to hear of her progress. Christmas is a time for giving, and as we approach it we should be mindful that there are many people in this world who are not as lucky as us.

On 14th November it will be National Diabetes Day. One in three people in The British Isles are now officially overweight, which greatly contributes to the condition, as the pancreas finds it hard to process too much sugar. Sugar is very addictive, and before we know it pounds can creep on. The cook Jamie Oliver has made great inroads into trying to educate the population about healthy eating, but his words often fall on deaf ears. Our affection for sugar not only gives us diabetes, but it has given us some of the worst teeth in the world (Americans often refer to ugly gnashers as ’English teeth’) with even very young children having to have their baby teeth extracted, as sweet drinks in their bottles has done their mouth no favours.

Start making that Christmas list, and in the spirit of the forthcoming Yuletide, perhaps contribute to a charity? ……. and turn up the central heating!

When I write this article I seek out unusual headlines, and was very amused to see that in America it will be ‘Clean Your Refrigerator Day’ 0n 15th of this month. I think they invented it especially for me, as one of my ice-boxes is so frozen over that I can’t open it. Goodness know what is lurking in there. I think I will have to take a chisel to it before I start buying food for Christmas!

Saturday 26th November

Thanksgiving Day will be celebrated by our American cousins on 24th November. It dates from the time of The Pilgrim Fathers in 17th Century. It was fixed as a public holiday in 1941. Families enjoy getting together, and usually eat turkey, followed by pumpkin pie. Canadians have their own Thanksgiving celebration in October. The start of Advent in this country will the 27th November this year. In the Christian church it celebrates the coming of Christ. Even though our

Remembrance 2016 By Keith Martin Royal British Legion Worcester Park This year’s poppy appeal has been launched, with many new ideas for people to give as they can with whatever they can afford. Our poppy dance is on 5th November with a 1940’s swing band The Bevin Boys, followed by our service night on Saturday the 12th November with Colin Roy – it’s sure to be a great evening. Pop and see us outside the club on Saturday 12th November where we will have a stand and a display of poppy items for your donations during the day.

November starting at Christ Church with St. Philips’s Service of Remembrance from 10 am, followed by two minutes silence at the memorial, and then a march down the high street past the club. Afterwards, all are welcome back to the club for a buffet and music by the D-Day Darlings. An auction of various items during the afternoon will take place with all proceeds going to the poppy appeal.

News The New Victoria Hospital’s new wing is officially opened by HRH Princess Alexandra New Victoria Hospital’s brand new wing, The Victoria Foundation Wing, was officially opened by HRH Princess Alexandra yesterday at an afternoon tea reception held for over 200 guests and staff in the hospital’s garden courtyard. Coincidentally it was almost thirty years to the day since the Princess had graced the hospital with her presence at the opening of the then newly completed Alexandra Ward, named in her honour. The hospital was absolutely delighted that HRH Princess Alexandra was able to perform an official opening once again. The event was also attended by the Mayor and Mayoress of Kingston upon Thames, Mr and Mrs Geoff Austin. The Victoria Foundation Wing is an extensive expansion to the independent, charity owned, private hospital situated in Kingston upon Thames. The new wing houses three state of the art operating theatres; an endoscopy theatre; a 2-bed high-dependency unit; a 6-bed recovery area and a 14-bed day surgery unit, bringing the total number of beds in the hospital to 35. The new day unit, the Charles Hutton Day Unit, is named after the hospital’s previous Chief Executive who ran the hospital for 32 years. The wing also includes a brand new 128-slice CT Scanner complete with cardiac diagnostic software, which will be the fulcrum of a new Cardiac Diagnostic Centre. The CT Scanner has the dual benefits of using the lowest doses of radiation possible whilst providing high definition quality scans. The second floor of the new building houses a brand new pathology laboratory, kitchen, staff dining-room, conference rooms and RMO’s flat. The exciting development is the culmination of a £22m project which began in 2014 after the hospital recognised it needed to expand in order to meet the growing demand for its services as well as provide a complete update of its facilities. Graham Ball, Chief Executive of New Victoria Hospital says of the build: “The four new theatres – three laminar flow operating theatres and one endoscopy theatre - replace our three small existing theatres. They house the latest theatre equipment on the market and each has been designed with its own pre-anaesthesia area. They are extremely spacious and will provide a superb environment for the highly skilled Consultants that we have operating at the hospital.”

18

“The Day Surgery Unit is another super area. With so many operations now able to be performed as same-day procedures it enables us to provide an even more efficient service for our patients. It has been beautifully designed with a floor to ceiling curved glazed wall overlooking the Malden Golf Club.” “The most important attribute of our hospital however has always been the expertise of our staff and the caring ambience that pervades throughout and I am delighted to say that we continue to achieve consistently excellent results in our patient surveys for our overall quality of care, with 99% rating us as excellent or very good. When the redevelopment is complete this summer, we will be able to be as proud of our physical environment as we are of our patient care.” The expansion project will continue for one further year, completing in autumn 2017 with a new outpatient department and reception area; 12 consulting rooms, a new physiotherapy department and a new pharmacy. The private, charity owned hospital is one of the few remaining independent hospitals in the country and has provided an excellent level of service to the local community for almost sixty years. Today it is frequently ranked by patients as one of the top private hospitals in London. In 2015 the hospital was shortlisted as a finalist in the Nursing Practice category of the national Laing Buisson Awards and in March 2016 went on to win a prestigious CHKS Top Hospital Award which celebrates the success of healthcare providers across the UK and internationally, rewarding important achievements in innovation, improvement and dedication to providing world-class healthcare. “The hospital is committed to the provision of exceptional standards of care and service to its patients, whose individual needs and safety are our priority at all times. As such, the hospital operates within a rigorous quality framework which aims to continually review and evaluate practice to improve the outcomes of care for patients and ensure the health and wellbeing of patients, staff and visitors. Our recent nominations for these awards are a terrific reflection on all of our staff. ” concludes Graham Ball. 184 Coombe Lane West Kingston upon Thames KT2 7EG

Cake and Bake Steamed Date Puddings with Caramel Sauce These moist and sticky mini steamed puds will go down a treat after a Sunday roast! Serve with pouring cream or a dollop of vanilla ice cream to make them extra indulgent.

Ingredients: • 115g butter, softened, plus extra for greasing • 115g caster sugar • 2 medium eggs beaten • 115g self-raising flour • 1tsp ground mixed spice • 55g ready-to-eat dates, chopped • 1/2 tsp vanilla bean paste (see Tip) • 1tbsp milk FOR THE CARAMEL SAUCE • 50g unsalted butter • 75g brown sugar • 75ml double cream

Makes 4 Ready in 1 hour 20 minutes

20

1. Preheat the oven to 190°C/170°C Fan/Gas Mark 5.

Lightly grease 4 x 175-200ml oven- proof ramekin dishes (or metal pudding basins) with the extra butter. Line the base of each with a circle of baking paper.

2. Place the butter and sugar in a bowl and beat together

until pale and creamy. Gradually beat in the eggs, adding a spoonful of the flour if the mixture begins to curdle. Sift over the rest of the flour and mixed spice and fold in until thoroughly combined. Fold in the dates, vanilla bean paste and milk.

3. Divide the mixture between the prepared dishes and

cover each with a square of pleated baking paper then pleated foil and secure with fine kitchen string. Place the dishes in a deep roasting tin and pour in enough boiling water to come halfway up the sides of the dishes. Bake for about 50 minutes until risen and firm to the touch.

4. To make the caramel sauce, gently heat the butter

and sugar in a small pan, stirring until the sugar has completely dissolved. Simmer for 1-2 minutes until syrupy then remove from the heat and stir in the cream to make a smooth sauce. Turn the puddings out onto warmed plates and spoon over the sauce.

TIP

Vanilla bean paste has a very intense flavour so use sparingly. If unavailable use 1tsp vanilla extract or for a change of flavour try 1-2 tsp coffee extract instead.

The Life List Crimes and Misbehaviours It was Mr Bumble in Oliver Twist who famously declared, “The law is an ass.” Although it probably couldn’t carry your shopping for you and I doubt it would look as cute in a large straw hat. The legal system is both archaic and awash with inconsistency, so perhaps it’s time for a judicious review. I retired to my chambers (i.e. I slept on it) and came up with some revised definitions - what say you good people? Pre-meditated murder: killing a yoga teacher before a class. If convicted, you can expect a long stretch. Assault and battery: an attack by torchlight. There may not be a charge, but you could still end up with a cell. Robbery with menaces: theft by a gang

wearing identical comic character masks. The experience is anything but dandy. Dangerous driving: an out-of-control golfer. Clap them in irons! Breaking and entering: making an illegal omelette. The verdict could leave you shellshocked. Receiving stollen goods: visiting a traditional Christmas fayre. This cake could end up in a file. Obtaining goods by deception: getting someone else to write your essays. The sentencing may be controversial. Pick pocketing: to customise a suit badly. Watch out for a stitch-up. Shoplifting: too lazy to take the stairs to the first floor of a department store. A heavy crime? Kidnapping: found in possession of a sleeping goat. Some might call it gruff justice. Forgery: to set up as an untrained blacksmith. It could lead to a life of vice. By Derek Thompson www.alongthewritelines.blogspot.co.uk

View from the City by Justin Urquhart Stewart 7IM We’re 30 years on from the Big Bang, but what’s changed for investors? Justin Urquhart Stewart, co-founder of Seven Investment Management October 26 marked the 30th anniversary of the Big Bang. It was so called as – along the lines of the universe’s epic – it marked a collision of deregulation, the start of electronic trading and an employment revolution in the City of London. The FTSE 100 by this point was already two years old, and up significantly from its original 1,000 base. With the increased trading and prominence of London as the international financial centre, the market climbed higher still.

It was also the time for the democratisation of shareholding. While there’d been a couple of small privatisations early in the Thatcher era, it was the 1986 launch of British Gas shares and its ‘tell Sid’ ad campaign that fuelled a healthy appetite for government share issues. The Tory’s 1987 election victory prompted a slew of privatisations from British Airways and Rolls Royce, through to electricity and water. The 1991-92 recession stemmed this flow and markets fell. But then, the index started its way back to a high as the ‘worldwide interweb’ began to form, along with the ‘dotcom’ bubble. But the start of millennium saw this bubble burst. The FTSE 100 reached 6,930 on 30 December 1999 only to collapse to 3,287 by 12 March 2003. From that nadir, the markets crawled their way back. But, as ever, it would seem we seem destined to swap one failed illusion only to find another. Thus, we were led on to the financial crisis of 2008: the FTSE 100 reached 6,730 on 15 June 2007 only to fall to 3,512 by 3 March 2009.

The resilience of investors and markets through all this has always been a wonder to me. Investors still seem to come back to the market and look to rebuild their investments‌or do they? Perhaps the wise just ignore it all and ride the markets come hell or high water. It’s worth remembering that there are two vital principles that have saved many an investor and, come to that, an investment house. The first is that it is time in the market that yields the real winner: timing the market is a dangerous game. The second is a result of the first in that it is the compounding of dividends over time that can provide you with the most assured returns in the long run.

One off Tidy-ups Garden Maintenance Decking and Lawns Hedge Trimming Landscaping Tree Surgery Stump Grinding Strimming and Weeding Garden Clearance Path and Patio Washing

So, while markets have changed considerably, the rules around investing certainly have not. The biggest question for us all as investors is whether we can learn from our past mistakes or are we just doomed to repeat them? Well I sincerely hope not!

Community Christ Church with St Philip to Host Christmas Tree Festival Christ Church with St Philip will be decked out with a majestic collection of Christmas trees this December as part of its first ever Christmas Tree Festival. Running from Friday 9th to Sunday 11th December, the trees will be the focal point of three days of festive celebration, and will be available for local businesses to sponsor in aid of the Church and St Raphael’s Hospice. As well as the tree display, highlights of the Festival include a traditional Christmas fair – featuring craft stalls and a grand prize draw – a dance display and musical performances. It will culminate in a Carols amongst the Trees service with mulled wine and mince pies. People will be able to visit the Church from Friday 12:30-19:30, Saturday 11:30-18:00 and Sunday 12:30-16:00 to enjoy the tree display and take time out of what can often be a busy time of year.

Rev Paul Timmis of Christ Church with St Philip said: “‘Our hope is that the Festival will bring our community together in support not only of the church but also of our wonderful local hospice. We hope it will be the first of many Christmas Tree Festivals and that people will be able to retreat from the hustle and bustle of life to take time to pause and reflect and enjoy the majesty of the trees in our Church.” Organiser Isobel Penny added: “We’re calling on as many individual members of the public and local businesses to get on board and sponsor a tree. In return, their tree will be decorated by a Church or community group and then carry its sponsor’s name and a brief description, before going on display in the church. Having the church filled with beautifully decorated trees really will be a sight to behold.” So far, Dawson Aerial Service Ltd, Garner’s Funeral Directors, Tasty Affair Catering, DalmenyDental Surgery and Brett Holt Solicitors have all signed up as sponsors. For details on how to get involved in the Festival or to sponsor a tree, please contact Isobel Penny at ijpenny@aol.com.

In many ways Shakespeare’s timeless tale of ‘starcrossed lovers’ is a study of loss of innocence set in an era when a young girl of marriageable age, was expected to conform with her father’s wishes. During the course of the play we see how love transforms an inexperienced, obedient girl into a spirited, vibrant young woman.

Gardening Garden Fireworks Pippa Greenwood

With bonfire night on November 5th just around the corner, you may be planning to celebrate with the traditional display of fantastic fireworks - but why not also think ahead and plant yourself a few garden fireworks to enjoy for years to come? At this time of year, there are still several flowers that look stunning in the border and very much remind me of fireworks. Red hot pokers or kniphofias, also aptly known as torch lilies, are flamboyant plants that are mostly natives of southern and eastern Africa. Try Kniphofia ‘Brimstone’ for a rich yellowy-orange colour, or if you want something smaller then how about ‘Little Maid’, which has ivory flower spikes topped with a warm yellowish tint and reaches a height of about 2 ft (60cm). ‘Fiery Fred’ really lives up to its name with extremely bright orangey-red flowers, while ‘Alcazar’ has blazing red flowers. They should be available in garden centres now, and they do well if planted out in early autumn or spring in a sunny spot with a well drained soil. Once established you will have a regular display that really will go off like a rocket! The crocosmias too help to provide some much needed colour at this time of year, and if you want a real splash of fire then take a look at ‘Lucifer’, with its flame-red, almost trumpet-shaped flowers clustered along an elegantly arching spike, or for golden yellow flowers consider ‘Canary Bird’. There are lots of different varieties of crocosmia (once known as montbretia) and provided you choose a site with sun or part shade in a well drained yet also moist soil, they will thrive – but that bit of moisture is essential if they are to flower as you hope. Grow them in completely dry conditions and you will be bitterly disappointed. Pot-grown plants should be available for planting now or in the spring, or you can buy the corms to plant towards the end of winter and, provided they are in the right spot, these plants will look like the ultimate elegant arching firework. If fireworks that look like clusters of stars are more your scene, then take a look at the sedums or ice plants, many of which have star-shaped flowers, either clustered together in tight heads or held as stunningly pretty single flowers. Some of the sedums, such as ‘Autumn Joy’, are still just about in flower at present, but even if you have missed much of the display for this year, plant pot-grown specimens now and you can guarantee that from late summer you will have a

42

tremendous show of blooms for several weeks, certain to attract bees and butterflies. The angels’ fishing rods, diorama, also have arching stems which are produced in great numbers surrounded by broad, almost grass-like leaves, each measuring up to 5 ft (1.5m) in length. The stems are covered with rich pink funnel-shaped flowers about 2 in (5cm) long, which dangle and sway in the wind - and the great thing about them is that they just keep on bobbing straight back up again, even on a windy site. Thinking ahead to the summer, consider growing some lupins, either one of the many yellow varieties or one of my favourites, ‘My Castle’, which has rich red flowers just like a rocket racing skywards, but far less noisy. If you want a tree in your garden but don’t have much space, then the Kilmarnock willow, Salix caprea ‘Kilmarnock’, is a good option, and reaches a height of no more than 6 ft (1.8 m) after 10 or 15 years. It has long weeping branches and bright yellow fuzzy catkins that cluster all over the stems before the leaves break in spring, far better than any real Roman candle I know! At this time of year, look around nearby gardens and see what a fantastic display autumn foliage can put on. Plant anything with good autumn colour and you could guarantee you will have a glowing bonfire each and every autumn. A visit to your garden centre at this time of year will reveal a plentiful supply of shrubs and trees putting on a fine display to make you reach for your wallet in double quick time. And finally, when you are thinking about Guy Fawkes’ night, remember that if you are going to have a firework display, try and make that bonfire at the last minute in order to minimise the risk of hedgehogs or other wildlife hiding beneath the heap and then coming to an untimely end. The hedgehog is one of the gardener’s best friends, as it eats huge numbers of slugs and many other garden pests. Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood.com to book Pippa for a gardening talk, or peruse the really useful selection of Pippa’s favourite gardening items, including Nemaslug to control slugs, pop-up crop covers, SpeedHoes, SpeedWeeders, raised bed kits, pull-out EasyTunnels, ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ Gift Voucher cards, signed books and lots more besides.

Health

If the food still looks good by lunchtime, children are more likely to eat it.

5 Top tips to liven up your kids’ lunch box

by Sandrine Olmi, Nutritional Therapist, Savoir Fayre Family Nutrition So it’s 8pm. The children are in bed and before you can relax in front of the television, you have to prepare your kids’ lunch boxes. Sometimes, energy and time are running short and you need some inspiration to give your child a nutritionally balanced and exciting meal to enjoy at school. The key ingredient is variety. The food a child eats in their early years can influence their taste and eating habits when they reach adulthood. So it’s great to start introducing flavours, textures and colours at a very young age. Here are 5 tips to help you do this. Tip no. 1: Go for cool as well as practical Children love pretty things. Carrying a lovely lunch box to school is fun and they are more likely to look forward to what is in it. Some lunch boxes have compartments so that the food does not get squashed.

Tip no. 2: Follow the seasons The fruit and vegetables available this month are red cabbage, sweet corn and apples. Red cabbage cut thinly with grated carrots and topped with sweet corn make a delicious side salad. Apples are such a wonderful snack for children to eat after school. It is a healthy alternative to a sweet treat or to a bag of crisps. Did you know that apples are high in fibre and vitamin C? And they are delicious. Tip no. 3: Think colour, think rainbow (Kids love rainbows!) When children do not eat enough fruit and vegetables, they run the risk of having low intakes of certain vitamins such as vitamin A and vitamin C. By introducing daily portions of colourful fresh ingredients, you are providing your child with a wide range of nutrients. These are essential for good performance at school, weight management and general wellbeing. The government guidelines suggest eating 2 portions of fruit and 3 portions of vegetables a day. I suggest going one step further by aiming for 5 colours a day. For example, go for one red apple, 2 tangerines and the choice of 3 vegetables (green beans, red cabbage and carrots for example).

Tip no. 4: Let your child be in charge One day a week, let your child decide which fruit and vegetable they wish to include in their lunch box. Remember to make the choice easy for them. Either go shopping with them or let them choose their favourite out of what is already in your fridge. By allowing your children to make decisions, they are more likely to eat the content of their lunch box. Tip no. 5: Have fun with it Kids love getting involved in the kitchen. Why not prepare the lunch boxes together a couple of times a week as a fun activity? You could also ask your children to plan the lunch box menu for the week. Talking about food is a great way to engage with your children and to get them excited about the next meal.

Hobbies Are we tired of shabby chic? Not by a long chalk By Kate McLelland] It’s a trend that has been going strong for over twenty years and there’s no sign of it disappearing just yet. ‘Shabby chic’ has been around since the 1990s, when holidaymakers returning from destinations such as Provence, Tuscany and Greece tried to recreate the weathered, sun-baked surfaces found in traditional Mediterranean buildings in their own homes, using specialist paint techniques. The shabby chic look is all about creating a sense of age and wear. Distressed textures, rubbed edges and sun-bleached surfaces all help to build the illusion that an object has been used and well loved for generations. One of the finishes most commonly employed to achieve this effect is chalk-based paint. This flexible medium requires no stripping, sanding or priming and you’ll only need to master a few basic techniques before you can start to use it with confidence. Nowadays there are several different types

of chalk-based paint to choose from, but the original brand was created by Annie Sloan, a leading name in interior design and author of a number of global bestsellers on paint techniques. She is famous not only for creating many of the techniques used in shabby chic, but for developing and patenting the paints and waxes used to complete the look. During the 1990s Annie found she was unable to buy the paints she needed to create an authentic feel of rusticity and age, so she returned to the roots of domestic paint-making, using chalk to create a paint similar to distemper, that produced an attractive finish when sealed with a layer of soft wax.

The recent interest in upcycling household objects has created a healthy market for furniture painted in the ‘shabby chic’ style. Dark brown wooden furniture has been unpopular for decades and upcyclers have been able to take advantage of this trend, buying pieces at knockdown prices, giving them a new lease of life and selling them on for a profit on Gumtree, Ebay or Shpock. There are many ways in which you can learn how to turn ‘tired’ pieces of furniture into shabby chic classics. Either ask your local chalk-based paint retailer if they offer beginners’ courses or watch one of the excellent “how to” videos on YouTube. Go to www.anniesloan. com to pick up some tips and techniques from Annie Sloan herself or follow simple, step-by-step instructions at www.dummies.com.

wax generously, using a clean cloth to remove any excess. 6 If you are painting furniture for the garden, you should not apply wax at all as it will not set (just be aware that the piece will age and fade more rapidly if it is left outside). If your indoor item is likely to get a lot of use, let the wax dry for two to three weeks before bringing it into service.

You’ll find lots of ideas for designing and colouring your shabby chic pieces if you follow Annie Sloan’s online blogs. Alternatively, visit your local library for 2 free proofs remainingofAdditional pro books on painting techniques or grab a selection interior design magazines from your local newsagent to get some inspiration.

This is your first proof of 3

Whether you want to revive pieces that you currently own or you fancy trying your hand at upcycling and selling on, you’ll find that turning yesterday’s scrap items into today’s interior design treasures is 1 Wash the furniture with clean, soapy water to remove rewarding … and highly addictive. any surface dirt, and allow to dry. Don’t be tempted to clean the surface with wax, as this won’t provide a secure base for applying the paint. There are just six easy stages to painting a piece of furniture with chalk-based paints:

2 There’s no need to be nervous about uneven brushstrokes. When you’re aiming for a rustic style, the strokes can go in any direction. For a ‘layered’ look you should apply coats of paint in different colours, using a lighter shade under or over a darker shade for contrast. 3 Allow at least an hour for the surface to dry then sand with very fine sandpaper. At this point you will be trying to create the look of furniture that has been painted many times and used so much that the paint has begun to rub off at the contact points, revealing different layers of colour. Sand only where you think the item would have been repeatedly touched (around handles or on the top and bottom corners of your piece). Don’t rush this part of the project: apply light pressure and start sanding in a place where the effect will be less visible. 4 Dampen a cloth and pass it over your item to remove all the sanding dust, then wait until it is completely dry. 5 Chalk based paint is porous, so it is liable to pick up marks and stains if it is not sealed with a layer of soft wax. Use a different brush to apply the wax and don’t use that brush for any other purpose (this also applies with coloured waxes – if you’ve used a dark wax on the brush, don’t use it to apply a lighter shade). Voice for Wildlife by Carol Williams

I have been a voice for wildlife most of my life, since way before I began to write this column. In the 1970s I was protesting the Canadian harp seal pup slaughter, marching for elephants, rhinos and tigers, participating in sponsored walks for WWF, demonstrating against blood sports and so on. I have given a considerable amount of money, over the years, to organisations and charities which exist to protect and save wild animals and wilderness habitat. I started the project to re-store Shadbolt Park Pond and joined the Wildfowl and Wetland Trust because I realised that our native amphibians were struggling to survive, due to the repeated draining of wetland habitats for development and the filling in of so many small garden ponds. The legacy of destroying wet-lands and filling the Earth’s atmosphere with climate changing gases, has been severe flooding in times of heavy rainfall. So many of our activities are detrimental to the environment, which im-pacts heavily - and most significantly - on wildlife. The largest group of beings now occupying this planet are the domestic animals that belong to humans, most of whom, of course, are in the agricultural sector. (The UNFAO report ‘Livestock’s Long Shadow’ which was published in 2006 makes thought provoking and troubling reading for anyone prepared to face up to its chal-lenges -and I would firmly state that anyone with a love for wildlife and a wish to protect it, should take this report seriously). At times it really does seem like we are fighting a losing battle - but the alternative is to simply give up in despair and do nothing. I like to think that the efforts of a few have been like plug-ging holes in a leaky ship, keeping her afloat until better times arrive and a proper repair can be made. I have to hope that the better times will arrive and that we do not lose elephants, rhinos, big cats, wolves, numerous marine creatures and birds from the face of the earth before this cen-tury ends. I would like to feel certain that my sons and any descendants they may have, will be able to enjoy wilderness and diversity on this planet and not be living in some overly urbanised landscape populated only by humans, their domestic animals and the few wild creatures humans will tolerate and who can successfully live off our garbage and find some habitat amongst our structures.

I am deeply troubled by the loss of so much rainforest and old growth deciduous woodland, by the increase in desert and the continued plunder of the oceans. I am worried by the apparent lack of concern of so many people, about these issues - things that will deeply and negatively affect the lives of all of us in the not too distant future, if we do not manage to halt the destruction and begin, instead, to restore.

Each time somebody turns their garden into a place devoid of greenery and tree cover, I realise how out of touch so many urban humans are with Nature and our need of it for well being and good health. So many studies have shown the beneficial effects on mood, mental health and physical well being of having grass, flowers and trees around us, and of being able to hear the birdsong, These things are priceless and irreplaceable; once lost, no species may ever return - extinction is forever. I have had the sad experience of seeing the extinction of many species during my lifetime, all of them because the human species has systematically and thoughtlessly, through greed and igno-rance, destroyed whole ecosystems and large tracts of wilderness, and persecuted to death many creatures who are viewed as a nuisance - particularly to the profits of animal farmers and game-keeping landowners. Lynx disappeared from the UK about 1500 years ago, due to hunting for their fur, but wolves lasted until the Middle Ages. Fortunately, these species aren’t extinct - yet. They still exist in Europe. Sir David Attenborough has called human beings ‘a plague on this earth’ - for so we are, ravaging it like the plague once ravaged human lives. We don’t have to be this plague, of course - we have immense capacity to be creative, healing and restorative. These are the human traits we must try our best to nurture and develop. The other day I was leaning on the sill of my bedroom window, just before the sun set, watching numerous different insects collecting pollen from the flowers on the mature ivy that grows up the back wall of our house - there were 2 species of bee, some hoverflies, wasps and a few others I couldn’t identify, all very busy. Ivy is such a valuable plant for late flying insects, flowering as it does in Autumn, not Spring - and yet so many people simply destroy it. It’s hardy and vigorous and will cover up any unsightly structure. It provides wonderful nest sites in Spring, nectar for insects in Autumn and berries for birds in Winter. Nest boxes, although a useful ‘rescue reme-dy’ are no substitute for natural nest sites, which offer protection from predators and inclement weather. There are no substitutes for native plants either, for benefitting all of our wild creatures. Some snippets of good news arrived with my RSPB magazine this month, which I am pleased to share, by way of a little encouragement in the gloom. I read that water voles are making a slow recovery in certain wetland areas created specially for them (their numbers plummeted by 95%) -hopefully the lessons learned in these places may be extended to other areas of the country soon.

Natterjack toads are also beginning to recover due to pond creation - so get on with making some more ponds please!

from a reputable wild flower growing company that uses good, native seed - to add diversity to your little patch. Let’s all create meadows, not lawns. (Anyone on Twitter can follow the hashtag #meadowsnotlawns for inspiration). The heath fritillary butterfly, another insect facing extinction in the UK in the 1980s is beginning to recover in some parts of the country due to careful management of habitat.

The loss of flower rich grasslands in the UK led to the short-haired bumblebee being declared extinct here in the 1980s but recent re-introductions from Sweden are giving hope of species re-covery - as long as we keep on encouraging meadow habitat. Parks, gardens and school grounds could be important here - don’t keep mowing all the grass -flower meadows are cut only once a year. This is the way to ensure seeds are in the ground for the next season’s flowering. Buy some seeds too,

The crane has recolonised, boosted by reintroductions, the bittern has climbed back up from a low of only 11 territorial males in the 1990s to 150 today, thanks to careful wetland management projects, and the white -tailed eagle is regaining its former stronghold in Scotland, after being returned there. We must not be complacent about wildlife, if we wish to keep the diversity of this planet. Every-thing we do has an impact. We need to make sure we drastically reduce the negative and try to increase the positive. Please do your bit.

ZOOPLA RISING

It’s hard to believe the first smartphone was launched little more than 6 years ago as they are now something many of us cannot remember living without. Initially a luxury in no time at all they became an essential and have changed the way in which we do so many things. Amongst those changes are the way in which we communicate and, importantly for us, how people search for, investigate, and remember their next home.

At the moment it would appear Zoopla is becoming more popular locally. Last year the site provided about 6 enquiries for every 10 that we received from Rightmove. That gap is closing. Currently Zoopla provides nearly 80% as many enquiries as we receive from its rival. The statistics probably vary across the country but as Zoopla is strong in London, and we speak to ever more people moving from pricier areas to Today a prospective buyer or tenant will seek better value, it’s not surprising to see probably have looked up the property on that trend locally.
