Well summer isn’t quite over yet (fingers crossed) but the school holidays pretty much are. We had a fantastic fortnight in South West Cork, enjoying a micro climate that no weather forecast accurately predicts. I go with very low expectations and have been very pleasantly surprised the last couple of years and happily in shorts most days. SW Cork isn’t great for the waistline though and I am looking forward to getting into a decent excercise routine in September and the coming months. There you go, now i’ve committed that to paper I’d better get on with it!

Worcester Park History In the garden at Dennington by David Rymill Following July’s article about Mount Tavy, we move to the other end, and opposite side, of Cleveland Road, where The Denningtons development occupies the corner of Royal Avenue, on the site of a house latterly known as Dennington. This fine red-brick house, with half-timbered gables, was built some time between 1894 and 1901; it was originally known as Highfield, and owned by Charles Gaselee. From about 1925, under the name Vanduara, it was home to the Revd Alfred Elgar and his wife Eileen – but like most large houses of the time it was not just the home of one family, but a miniature community including indoor and outdoor staff. I am grateful to Joy Bishop and her brother the late Tony Cornell for their memories of life at Vanduara/ Dennington in the 1920s-30s, when their father John Edward (Jack) Cornell was the Head Gardener, and they lived upstairs in the adjacent staff cottage, over the old coach-house, while the chauffeur Victor Shaylor lived in a smaller flat downstairs. In August 1931, shortly after they had moved to Bournemouth, Mr and Mrs Elgar wrote: ‘Mr J Cornell has been with us for over six years… When Cornell took over the garden at Vanduara it was little better than a wilderness of weeds, and when we left it was a thing of real beauty, producing flowers of almost every description in great profusion. Cornell was quite as successful in the kitchen garden… after a good deal of hard work… Cornell was producing first-class crops of vegetables and small fruits in great variety and sufficient in quantity to supply a household of nine persons… ‘From Christmas onwards he had the large greenhouse packed with flowers – cinerarias, schizanthus, primulas and arum lilies, and later on lots of daffodils, narcissi and tulips. In the small greenhouses he has grown fine crops of peaches, cucumbers and melons. Cornell’s great success was largely due to the fact that he is really interested in his work. In the summer he often ceased work only when the darkness compelled him to do so.’

6

The Cornell family stayed on for about six years under the new owner, W J Lavender, who renamed the house Dennington; by this time he was a leading local entrepreneur, running the housebuilders Lavender and Farrell. Tony Cornell recalled that his father continued to keep the garden looking near perfect: ‘He always did a spell in the garden before having breakfast, and in summer watering or tending his cuttings would continue until dusk. Dad’s no. 2 in the garden was Bob Courtney: he did most of the mowing and hedge-clipping.’ Joy Bishop adds: ‘We all used to go down there when the garden was cool in the evening, and weed and dead-head – and when there was a lot of fruit about and they were making jam, my mother used to help with that.’ Tony Cornell described the preparations for the wedding of Vera Lavender in 1937: ‘A large marquee was erected on the croquet lawn on the west side of the house; flags and bunting were strung across from garden trees bordering Cleveland Road to the house. The beds bordering the sweeping drive were crammed with the most colourful flowers my father could produce, and I remember him wheeling barrowloads of arum lilies in pots from the greenhouses.’ Mrs Bishop recalls that the Lavenders also had several indoor staff: ‘They had a cook called Maisie: she was really fun; if she had a day off she’d come out with us – we all had a day out at Chessington Zoo once. And then there was Ruby, a parlourmaid; and Phyllis used to come in and do chores’. Life in service, could, however, be insecure, and a number of staff members disappeared suddenly.

To find out more about the houses in The Avenue, Royal Avenue, St Mary’s Road and Cleveland Road, and some of the people who have lived in them, why not come along to St Mary’s Church, Cuddington, at the top of The Avenue, for a Heritage Open Day on Saturday 10th September, from 11am to 5pm. As well as giving you a chance to look round the church, this year’s event will feature displays about these roads over the last 150 years, including photographs or drawings of as many as possible of the pre-1910 houses that have existed here; we are also marking the 150th anniversary (a few weeks early) of the opening of the Iron Church that preceded St Mary’s.

Ruth Jemmett Writes September Song Ruth Jemmett takes us on a journey through the month that marks Autumn

I was idly playing the beautiful ballad, September Song on the piano the other day. Although it was written in 1938 it haunting lyrics about the passing of time are as relevant to us today as they were then. The passing of the seasons are indeed a reflection of our own existence. In the Spring of our youth, there is much hope, and time seems endless - remember how long those school holidays seemed ….? The summer of our lives reflects the sun’s rays in our hearts, as we build our families and still look optimistically forward. Then comes September, when those of us of a certain age certainly take

on the song’s words - ‘ The days dwindle down to a precious few’ …. It is at this time in the year - and our lives - that we must appreciate all the good things all around us, and make the most of them, before Winter sets in. As we age, the words ‘the Autumn of one’s life’ have a certain resonance to them! We must certainly make hay while the sun shines, and treasure every minute! During my years as a Bereavement Counsellor I was often struck by the emptiness of some people’s lives when they lost a loved one. I would often ask them what hobbies they had, and far too often they would say they didn’t have any, as they had forsaken their own dreams in order to immerse themselves in marriage and children. All very laudable, but we must never forget about ourselves, and what would make us feel fulfilled in other ways, as life will inevitably change, and unless we make the most of our individual existences and needs, life will literally pass us by. September, the ninth month of the year was the seventh month of the ancient Roman calender hence its derivation from the Latin word ‘septem’, meaning seven. It is a time when the glorious colours in our gardens start to fade, and the sound of children’s voices on their way to school on misty mornings, echo down our roads here in Worcester Park. Autumn can be a time of fun for children, as they gather conkers. What a shame that Health and Safety regulations have started to deem conker fights some sort of dangerous sport. In my school days I remember exciting competitions between young boys in the school playground as they knocked seven bells out of each other with conkers they had steeped in various mysterious potions that toughened them up! For farming folk it is a time when the last of the grain harvest comes in. The Anglo-Saxons called this month Gerstmonath, meaning the barley month. The gardens here is Salisbury Road are beginning to look a little faded, as shorter days make our plants and shrubs start to shut down a bit, and give into the start of night frosts. As things get chillier we can still rejoice is some bright colours, with Michaelmas Daisies cheering us up on misty days. When I was a child I remember finding a stick insect on these daisies - much to the horror of my mother! The purple flowers are often bedecked with spiders’

webs, and can look stunning as the sun’s morning rays shine through melting frost or dew. Spiders start coming into our homes at this time of year. Apparently the very big ones can be females looking for a mate. I am not a fan of them, and the next time I see one I might ask it to do its dating on The Web (ho ho!) instead of frightening the life of me! Michaelmas celebrates the feast day of St Michael in both the Anglican and Catholic churches. St Michael was regarded as the chief of angels. His is usually represented in art wearing armour, with a dart in his hand, trampling on Lucifer! Michaelmas is one of the four days in the year when quarterly rents are paid. It was once thought that eating a goose on Michaelmas day - 29th September - would augur financial happiness in the coming year. The goose probably didn’t feel too happy about things! An old saying tells us that ‘If St Michael brings many acorns, Christmas will cover the fields with snow. Keep watching those oak trees! Several celebrities have birthdays this month, including Barbara Knox (Rita from Coronation Street), who will be 83, and Johnny Mathis, who will be 81. This Texan born singer had originally planned to become a PE teacher. Thank goodness he didn’t do that, or else I wouldn’t spend a lot of my time playing his easy listening CDs! He turned out to be one of the top ten selling artists of the 20th Century. The 6th to the 12th September will mark Migraine Awareness Week. People who don’t suffer from this awful affliction tend to dismiss them as just being a headache, but it can be very much worse than that. It is estimated that one in ten people suffer from them, with women having more than men. Its causes can be various, including fluctuation of hormones in women, strss, eating certain foods, having too much or too little sleep etc. Many members of my family suffered from them - including me - and in some cases it really affected their enjoyment of our lives. Unfortunately they can be genetic, and as both of my parents had the, I didn’t stand a chance of avoiding them! A real migraine can sometimes render you almost sightless, and temporarily take away your ability to talk or think clearly. It can give you symptoms similar to a stroke, such as numbness in various parts of your body. Nausea or extreme bouts of vomiting - sometimes lasting for more than a day can take over your life- and the headache - oh that headache! - is agonising. If you get the chance to

12

support a charity researching into the cause of this wretched illness, please donate generously, as it badly affects lives. People like the entertainer Tommy Steele, and Maureen Lipman have had them all their lives, and even the late Princess Margaret was a martyr to them. As I say, it is not ‘just a headache’. Some people are unlucky enough to be hospitalised. Luckily for women the menopause can ease migraine, so at least ‘the change’ can give women something good for a change! This month will of course see The last Night of the Proms at The Royal Albert Hall on 12th September. It is such a joyous night that I always try to watch it on television. Yes - it’s jingoistic atmosphere can grate on some people, but the happiness of the occasion, with its rousing music is hard to resist! However you spend your days in September, I hope you make the most of them, and as September Song says ‘I haven’t got time for the waiting game’! Before it gets really cold, get out there and make hay! Ruth Jemmett is a Member of The Society of Authors

QUARTER PERCENT

A SWITCH TO PROPERTY

The big news at the beginning of August was a cut in interest rates taking the bank rate to an historic 322 year low. It is early days but we don’t expect the cut to make a lot of difference to the housing market. Even if your mortgage company is going to reflect the reduction, and quite a lot are not, the difference is relatively small. On the average local mortgage it will put around £10 a week back into your pocket and while any amount is always welcome it’s not life changing.

The impact on savers is important and will probably continue to be so. Cash in the bank earns a modest annual return whilst buy-to-let investors can currently expect to receive just under 5% in gross rental income. At the start of the millennium that gross return was almost double the current figure as mortgage payments were significantly higher and Landlords needed to charge a rent that would cover their costs. Though not worry free by any means, and not a short term option, this has fueled the rise of investment in rental property and in turn property prices. We have certainly noticed that tide of interest, which shows no signs of slackening despite the recent stamp duty changes, and which has swelled the local stock of rental property considerably.

Home owners who are now paying the last installments of their typical 25 year loan would have started paying when the bank rate was 10.875%. Of course at that time property prices, and hence borrowing, were significantly lower, but they have seen their mortgage payments tumble over the years. Many will remember 17% interest rates in the late 1970’s, the point at which today’s retirees likely bought their first property, which adds perspective to current rates. GOING UP?

The interest rate cut may not be a game changer but an increase to levels of just a decade ago certainly would be. Before the referendum many reporters column inches were given over to speculation as to when the base rate would increase. Before the last recession rates were around the 4-5% mark and were they to rise to those levels again current mortgagees would need to find several hundreds of pounds extra a month. The effect on personal finances, and thereafter house prices, would be devastating and for that reason must be a solution of last resort for the Bank of England who are already expected to further reduce interest rates later this year. Indeed it looks very probable that the current low interest rates will persist long term. Those paying a mortgage may be pleased but savers are not.

For tenants this has all been a bit of a double edged sword. On the one hand increased supply of rental property has given choice and, as landlords compete to attract and retain good tenants, the quality of rental properties has improved. Interest rate cuts, resulting in lower mortgage costs, have been passed on to tenants gradually. At the same time new landlords often need to maximize their return and, having paid current market values for their property, are marketing their properties at fuller rents. Longer established landlords can often afford to accept lower rents and act to dampen the market a little. Meanwhile property prices have been driven upwards. The net result is tenants are unable to save for their own property and are trapped in rented property longer. The low interest driven property market is a vicious circle that we don’t see ending quickly. If you would like to discuss any of the issues above please do not hesitate to contact either our sales or lettings teams who will be very happy to help you.

Music Brand New: The Malden Youth Orchestra The Malden Chamber Orchestra is an active musical reality in South-West London, who plays an important role in recruiting adult players with grade 3-6 at an orchestral instrument, and training them to play as an ensemble into a vibrant orchestral environment. The Malden Chamber Orchestra (formerly Malden Centre Orchestra) has been rehearsing and performing for over four decades, attracting literally hundreds of participants from the New Maden area and the surrounding communities: it caters primarily for mature people willing to share their passion for classical music. The orchestra meet Thursday mornings at the Malden Centre (Blagdon road, New Malden), during term time, rehearsing and performing a wide repertoire which span from major classical symphonies, to overtures and ballet music, and to celebrated music-hall and show tunes. The arrival of its new musical director in 2016 has marked a new era, which has seen the orchestra increasing the number of players, reaching out to the local community, creating its own website, fostering a new approach to technique and repertoire and enlarging the music library: the successful Christmas concert has gathered almost 300 people for the event, and has collected hundreds of pounds to donate to the local office of the Salvation Army. Now the orchestra is taking a step forward with its new project which branches out to youngsters: from September 2016 the all brand new Malden Centre Youth Orchestra will start, opening the doors to young players aged 10-21, with different grades of ability at an orchestral instrument - strings, winds and brass- (percussion players, please enquire with the conductor before enrolling). Its mission is to establish a music legacy through a local orchestra of outstanding level composed of dedicated young musicians: t will teach youngs to play within a group and to develop their musicianship and creativity in order to achieve high musical standards. The Youth Orchestra project wants to provide its participants with a regular opportunity to meet and play together, to learn the classical symphonic repertoire, to increase awareness of the musical aspects, to enrich, inspire and serve the local community, also to develop new friendships and engage with contemporary culture.

The Malden Youth Orchestra will rehearse on Thursday afternoons after school, 5-7 pm at the Malden Centre, during school terms. The formula which has proved successful is to make the music playing lively and enjoyable, in a safe and friendly environment: this is an exciting opportunity to develop technical skills on the instrument and to learn new musical competences by playing in an ensemble. To enquire about terms and fees and to enrol on the course, please contact the The Malden Centre reception desk, 020 8336 7770.

Finance What exactly is a credit score, and how does it impact on your life? When you apply for credit or other types of borrowing, the lender will check your credit score to see if you are a good or bad risk. Your credit rating also comes into play in other situations, and has the potential to affect every aspect of your life. A low score means that you may have to pay an increased rate of interest to counteract the risk to a lender. This has massive implications if you’re trying to obtain a mortgage, as a poor credit rating can mean less product choice and higher monthly repayments. Even smaller financial outlays such as a new mobile phone contract involves a check on your credit file by the provider, so it’s a good idea to understand what constitutes your credit rating, and whether you can do anything to improve it in the future. Credit reference agencies Three main credit reference agencies exist in the UK – Experian, Equifax, and Callcredit. Your credit rating is made up of various aspects of the information they hold about you, which is contained within your credit report. Any County Court Judgements (CCJs) or other markers of insolvency/bankruptcy remain on your credit file for six years, so even though you can be discharged from bankruptcy in 12 months, the fact is evident on your report for a much longer period of time. How is a credit score formulated? A number between zero and 999 is used as a guide to lenders and other interested parties, such as landlords and utility companies, about your ability to repay. A high score translates to a low risk as far as they are concerned – in other words, the lower the score the more problems you could face. Scores between 721 and 999 are generally considered a lower risk, but there are other factors that influence your overall rating: • Your previous history of repayment. • How much credit is available to you. • The level of debt. • Whether any County Court Judgements have been made against you for non-payment, or if you have been made bankrupt in the past.

20

• If you are on the electoral roll. • How many times you have applied for credit. • The length of time your bank account has been open. If you’re married or living with a partner and have a joint mortgage or loan, you’ll also see a financial link with this person. This can adversely affect your rating if they have experienced their own financial problems. So how could a low credit score impact on your life? Difficulty in getting a mortgage Even if you find a lender willing to offer you a mortgage, the interest rate will probably be much higher, and you won’t have access to the better deals. Having a low credit score is often an indication that you can’t afford a mortgage, but unfortunately it can also affect your ability to rent. Problems renting A landlord will check your credit score - if they see that payments have been missed or that you are not on the electoral role, they could view you as untrustworthy and an unnecessary risk. Personal loans and other finance Obtaining car finance will be difficult if your credit score is low, as this is the main factor on which a lender bases their decision. It’s not only the large purchases that can be stifled, however – you may also encounter problems when trying to increase your bank overdraft or when requesting a higher limit on your credit card. Limited ways to pay Your credit report can impact on the way you pay for goods in shops. With so many store and reward cards now available, they are a popular way to amass points and enjoy reductions in-store. Again, your credit score will be checked if you apply for this type of card, and along with the information on your application form, will influence the company’s decision. How to improve your credit score over time If your credit rating is low, or you feel that it could be better, there are specific actions you can take to improve it over the long-term: • Make sure you’re on the electoral register, as a permanent address increases confidence that you’re trustworthy. •Pay at least the monthly minimum on your credit cards. • Cancel any unused credit cards appearing on your credit report - too much available credit adds to your risk from the lender’s viewpoint. • Check for mistakes on your credit report, with all three agencies – you can request that they amend

your report, and add a comment against the entry to explain that it is incorrect. • If a spouse or partner has a poor credit score, you can apply for a financial disassociation. A good credit score can make your life more straightforward, so it’s worthwhile reviewing your credit report every so often to make sure that all the details are correct, and also to check for any suspicious activity. It’s possible to obtain a copy from any of the credit reference agencies for a few pounds. uk.businessinsider.com/how-your-credit-score-canimpact-your-life-2016-5?r=US&IR=T www.sainsburysbank.co.uk/money-matters/guide-tocredit-scores.shtml

Clubs Five years of square dancing around Stoneleigh Five years ago Granville Spencer, a Square Dance caller moved to Worcester Park and set up a new club named Hogsmill Squares to reflect our local river! Amazingly, 90% of the dancers who stayed the first year are still dancing with us and still learning something new every week. We now have over a hundred square dancers meeting regularly in this area, enjoying the exercise, the friendships, the social events, the laughter when things go astray and sense of achievement when a dance goes well. Some of our members spent a day and a half filming for an episode of Call the Midwife, in which Granville was the Caller at the Square Dance and we danced with the stars! Square dancing involves teamwork as it takes 8 people to make up a square with the Caller leading the dancers through the movements carefully making sure everybody understands. The great thing is that there are no long dance routines to learn – just the individual moves, a bit like structured barn dancing without the skipping The more moves you learn the more interesting it gets and the more fun everyone has especially when things go a bit wrong!

Square dancing is truly international as it is danced throughout the world, using the exact same moves, and these are always called in English. Granville, and his wife Wendy, have danced at clubs in such diverse locations as Florida, Copenhagen, Bratislava, Vienna, Paris and numerous towns in Germany! This August, several members will be dancing at the European Convention in Stratford-upon-Avon with over 800 dancers from 17 different countries including Russia, China, Norway and Australia. On Tuesday, September 6th, Hogsmill Square Dance Club is holding a FREE taster session at St John’s Parish Centre, Station Approach, Stoneleigh KT19 0QZ from 7.00-8.30pm - come along and see how much fun exercise can be – your Tuesdays evenings may never be the same again! If you cannot make September 6th, student classes will continue on the following Tuesdays 13th & 20th September at the same venue. Going forward we plan to meet every Tuesday (on the 4th Tuesday in the month we meet at the Shiraz Mirza Community Centre, Manor Park, Malden Road, New Malden, KT3 6AU). We will be happy to accept new students until the first week in October. If you are unsure or require further information please do not hesitate to contact Granville and Wendy Spencer on Tel: 02035 567449, Mob: 07752 431721or E-mail: spencer8@tiscali.co.uk.

You needn’t worry about having two left feet – anybody can Square Dance as the movements are very simple and rhythmical – the hardest thing is knowing your left from your right – which is not as easy as it may seem! Granville came to his first Square Dance lesson saying “If we go once, we can tell them we don’t like it, then they won’t ask us again!” Of course, he loved it from the very first dance: grace and style, skipping and hopping are not required, but his sense of direction and appreciation of formation and order gave him a good start. Our children were just old enough not to need a baby sitter as we enjoyed our 2 hours learning a new hobby together. Square dancing is great fun for couples, singles and families and provides an interactive social evening. It combines physical and mental stimulation for people of all ages and provides a “well being” effect as you join in with other people, make new friends and master new skills. All the moves are easy to learn with everybody helping each other along the way – it is often called fun and friendship set to music. This music being drawn from a wide range of tastes including new and classic pop, jazz, country and western, rock and roll etc.

Community Become a volunteer driver for Princess Alice Hospice At Princess Alice Hospice we are dedicated to providing free high quality care and support for adults with cancer and other life limiting illnesses. Our Hospice in Esher is more than a building - it is the heart of a huge multi-professional network delivering care and support to a community of more than a million people living in a large part of Surrey, South West London and Middlesex. Day services form a crucial part of the care we offer. Our day hospice allows patients to access the support of the multi-disciplinary team who care for their physical, psychological and spiritual needs, all within a social setting where they will meet new people and enjoy a cooked lunch. Day services also include a wide range of specialist therapies, including art therapy, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and dietetics. We also run exercise classes, yoga and relaxation sessions and a weekly social group. These services allow patients to manage their illness whilst living at home and play a vital role in helping them to maintain their independence and quality of life.

We rely on a dedicated team of volunteer drivers who bring patients to the Princess Alice Hospice in Esher for their appointments and activities. Without these drivers, 70% of our patients would not be able to access these crucial services. We are currently desperately short of drivers and are looking to recruit more people to the team. As a volunteer driver, you can donate as much or as little time as you wish. You will receive a mileage allowance and can drive either your own vehicle or

28

one of our specially adapted vehicles. By becoming a volunteer, you will become part of a friendly team and will play an active role in changing people’s lives for the better. So if you enjoy being behind the wheel and have a few hours to spare, please get in touch with us today. If you would like to apply or find out more about this role, please visit our website at http://www. pah.org.uk/volunteer. 1 Cook the potatoes in a large pan of boiling, lightly salted water for 15-20 minutes until tender. 2 Meanwhile, place the cod in a large frying pan and pour over the milk. Add the bay leaf and peppercorns and bring to the boil. Simmer for 5 minutes then remove from the heat. Using a slotted spoon, remove the cod from the pan and set aside. Strain the milk into a large heatproof jug. 3 Melt 50g of the butter in a medium saucepan. Stir in the flour and cook for 1 minute. Gradually whisk in 850ml of the milk. Bring to the boil, stirring all the time, then simmer for 3-4 minutes until you have a smooth, thick sauce. 4 Preheat the oven to 200C, fan 180C, Gas 6. Flake the fish, discarding any skin and bones, and stir into the sauce with the parsley, peas and prawns. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste. Transfer the mixture to a deep ovenproof dish. 5 Mash the potatoes with the rest of the butter and milk and season to taste. Spoon the mash over the fish mixture to cover. Drizzle over the olive oil and bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes until golden and bubbling. Serve garnished with a sprig of parsley. TIP You can use any white fish fillet for this pie - haddock or coley will work just as well. Alternatively, replace half the cod with salmon fillet or smoked haddock, if liked.

Nonsuch Park is a link to Tudor England. The Palace that once stood here was a hugely expensive symbol of Henry VIII’s power. The Friends of Nonsuch offer guidance to a 7 feet model which has been created from contemporary documentation, paintings and an excavation of the Palace site in 1959. The model is on display in the Stable Wing of the much later Nonsuch Mansion in the heart of Nonsuch Park. Gardening Brilliant Bulbs Pippa Greenwood

It is spring bulb time in all the garden centres now. Every one up and down the country should be crammed full of bulbs, many at an incredibly reasonable price, and all of which promise to provide glorious masses of colour, sometimes with scent, for many years to come. By all means plant bulbs in beds and borders, but make this the year that you are a touch more adventurous and, if you don’t have any open ground in your garden and do your gardening purely on a terrace, patio or in a back yard, then don’t forget that there are still plenty of bulb planting opportunities to be had! Bulbs have the potential to make any garden look gorgeous but you can use them to add an element of fun as well as glamour, colour and perfume. Bulbs look fantastic if allowed to naturalise beneath trees, but if you’ve no space for trees then miniature bulb varieties look equally good beneath shrubs. Simply choose a suitable selection such as miniature daffodils or crocuses and plant them in a random or scattered effect beneath the shrub, taking care to minimise damage to the shrub’s roots. Keep them well watered in spring and you should have a fantastic display. On special occasions you may have been sent some flowers and these are often delivered in ornamental plastic-lined woven baskets, which are also available inexpensively from local markets or on the internet. These make perfect planting containers provided they are at least 3” (8 cm) deep. Shallower baskets can be used for smaller bulbs such as crocuses - simply fill them with bulb fibre and then plant up in the same way as you would a bowl of bulbs for an indoor display. To ensure that drainage is definitely not a problem, puncture some holes in the plastic liner and then use any normal multi-purpose or loam based compost mixture. Baskets like this look particularly decorative in the spring, and if you add a couple of ferns or ivies to larger baskets they will look even better. Make use of an outdoor table which is normally left out throughout the year. In spring it is unlikely that you are going to use it for outdoor entertaining, so simply cover it to prevent the surface being spoiled and arrange a selection of pots full of spring bulbs on it – the effect can be really splendid and will make eating out of doors even more fun and stylish.

one - makes a fabulous planter, but remember to drill some holes in the base, or if this isn’t possible, ensure that you place a layer of pebbles or grit at least 2” (5cm) deep in the bottom, so that excess water accumulates below the level of the roots and the bulbs do not rot off. If your garden or back yard is a good size, then make sure that you use some large containers as these look particularly handsome if you can afford the space. Packed full of a single variety of one of the daffodils or tulips or any other spring bulbs, they will look absolutely gorgeous and make a very striking and bold display. Plant the container up in two layers, so that one lot of bulbs is planted a couple of inches deeper than the other, and you will find that the display is prolonged slightly as the deeper ones will flower somewhat later than those planted closer to the surface If you want something really wacky, why not consider using an old bathroom suite or parts of it to make some very unusual planters? A bath may need a lot of compost to fill it – and don’t forget that good drainage will be necessary - but it can act like a full-sized flowerbed. Even a hand basin, lavatory or perhaps just the cistern can be planted up to great effect. For a truly ornamental look, put an old watering can or wheelbarrow to good use by turning it into a planter; it’s the sort of thing you pay a fortune for in a garden centre! And then, guess how to make a decrepit pair of wellies or the pair of boots with a hole in them look fun: yes, these too make wonderful bulb containers! Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood.com and make the best use of your vegetable plot rather than leaving it empty over winter, with Pippa’s ‘Winter thru’ Spring’ collection of vegetables for planting next month, along with a really useful selection of Pippa’s favourite gardening items including Nemaslug to control slugs, pop-up crop covers, SpeedHoes, SpeedWeeders, ladybirds to control greenfly, pull-out mini tunnels, signed books and lots more besides.

Kids Why Creative Writing needs to be fun for children Terry Pratchett: “Writing is the most fun anyone can have by themselves.” As a tutor I’m very familiar with lists of what to include in creative writing: interesting sentence starters; adverbials of time, place and manner; metaphors, similes and personification, and it goes on. I see students’ eyes glaze over. And before I became a tutor, I’d done lots of boxticking myself. I’d written my way through 3 literature subjects at A-level; a literature degree at Oxford; a law degree in London; two years working in law; countless pages as a proof-reader. I could express myself concisely and correctly and I always backed up my points with evidence. I really liked ticking boxes! But the actual process wasn’t ‘fun’. When students find out that the writing process is magical, they don’t need lists. To start a story, I sometimes ask students to imagine a place; what sort of character could be in that place; what they might be doing. If someone is stuck, I help them visualise: we close our eyes; we use props and games; we talk about what we can hear, touch, smell, see, taste in the place. We laugh about things we imagine like rotten egg smells and dog poo, floating people and giant trees. Once they have come up with a place and a character, then their imagination can take them into a story: they are on the journey and the story forms as they write. They get excited; ideas flow easily; they realise they are in control of the writing even though they don’t know how the story ends. This is the creative process! And then they become enthusiastic about similes, metaphors, varying sentence structure, and all the rest. Because then they’re doing it to their characters, their settings, it’s all from them, not from a list. I’m currently writing a story about a dragon who has just set off on a journey from her mountain. I’m not sure yet where she’s headed: when I find out I’ll tell you!

Health Migraine Awareness Week: It’s Not ‘Just’ a Headache By Alison Runham www.alison.runham.co.uk The World Health Organisation lists it as one of the most disabling lifetime conditions. It’s more common than epilepsy, diabetes and asthma combined. Yet migraine is often poorly understood and trivialised. Migraine Awareness Week, running from 4th–10th September, aims to educate the public about migraine and reduce its stigma. What is Migraine – And Who Is At Risk? Migraine isn’t ‘just a bad headache’. It’s a complex set of symptoms, often including headache, that’s triggered by physiological changes – and it affects over 8 million people in the UK. People with a family history of migraine are more at risk and women are three times as likely to suffer as men are. There’s no one known ‘cause’, but several triggers that can precipitate migraine, alone or in combination, have been identified. Migraine Triggers •Stress, anxiety or excitement – although some migraines start when stress is relieved. • Hunger or lack of food - fluctuating or low blood sugar levels are a common trigger. • Dehydration. • Sleep – usually too little, but sometimes too much. • Change of routine. • Alcohol. • Caffeine – limit caffeinated drinks and beware painkillers containing caffeine. • Prolonged screen time – due to screen glare or flickering, and also muscle tension. • Smells. • Hormonal changes in women. • Environmental factors – changes in temperature, humidity and altitude, loud noises, and flickering or glaring lights (although sensitivity to bright lights and loud sounds may be a warning sign rather than a trigger). • Jaw tension or coughing. • Unaccustomed exertion. • Illness Tyramine, found in some soft cheeses and wine, is no longer considered a trigger by most experts. Types and Symptoms of Migraine Most migraines fall into these categories: Migraine with aura: Previously known as focal or classic migraine, this accounts for 10-30% of migraines. Migraines with aura present as neurological symptoms

48

that usually last less than an hour and prior to a headache (although the headache may not appear at all). The most common symptoms are visual disturbances, including tunnel vision, double vision, blind spots or temporary blindness, flashing lights and sparkling/coloured spots, stars or zigzags. However, some people may also experience: • Weakness on one side of the body or partial paralysis. • Dizziness or vertigo. • Numbness or tingling. • Disturbance to speech, hearing and memory. • Feelings of fear or confusion. • Fainting. These more severe symptoms tend to occur most often with rare subtypes of migraine, such as migraine with brainstem aura and hemiplegic migraine. Migraine without aura: The most common type of migraine, experienced by 70-90% of sufferers. Attacks usually last between 4 and 72 hours if they go untreated. The headache is usually a throbbing pain, often on one side, which often worsens when you move or exert yourself. It’s often accompanied by nausea and sometimes vomiting and/or diarrhoea. You may become sensitive to light or sound, too. Menstrual Migraine is usually without aura and affects fewer than 10% of women. It’s thought to be triggered by falling oestrogen levels and/or prostaglandin release during the menstrual cycle, so it’s most likely to occur within the two days before, and the first three days during, a period. It often lasts longer than other types, recurring daily for a few days. Preventing Migraine Avoiding triggers and sticking to a regular routine of exercise, sleep and healthy eating can help. If your migraines are severe and/or frequent, your GP may recommend preventative medications such as topiramate and propranolol. Treating Migraine Take medications swiftly, as the stomach often stops working effectively during a migraine. Over-the-counter painkillers may help, but you may need something stronger. Pharmacies can supply medications containing pain relief and an anti-emetic that alleviates nausea and vomiting and aids painkiller absorption.

Please remember to mention Worcester Park Life when you speak to our advertisers

Your GP may prescribe triptan medications, which reverse the blood vessel dilation thought to cause migraine. Botox injections are now licensed for treatment of chronic migraine. It’s thought they work by interrupting the pain feedback pathway to the brain. Menstrual migraine sufferers may find relief from hormonal contraceptives, oestrogen supplements and mefenamic acid (an anti-inflammatory painkiller that can also alleviate heavy periods). Some people find that sleep or resting in a darkened room is the only way to ease their migraine. When Should You Visit Your GP? • If you’ve never had migraine before. • If you suffer from migraine more than 5 days in a month, even if your pain is under control with medication; you may require a preventative medicine. When to Seek Emergency Medical Advice Finally, if you experience any of the symptoms below, it’s important to be assessed quickly - they can also indicate a stroke or meningitis. • Paralysis or weakness in one or both arms or the face. • Slurred/ garbled speech. • A sudden agonising headache. • Headache accompanied by a high temperature, stiff neck, mental confusion, seizures, double vision and rash. Voice for Wildlife by Carol Williams

I seldom write about marine life, so this one is for all the wild creatures of the oceans, at peril because of human appetites. The information in quotes is copied and pasted from www.onegreenplanet.org. ( The spellings are American). “The whales are the primary species that fertilize the phytoplankton. For example, one blue whale defecates three tons of nitrogen and iron-rich feces a day, providing nutrients to the phytoplankton. In return, the phytoplankton feed the zooplankton, the fishes and ultimately everything that lives in the sea. In order to restore phytoplankton populations, we need to restore whale populations and we need to abolish the industrialized exploitation of biodiversity in the ocean. We also need to have governments end all subsidization of commercial fishing operations. The reality is that there are simply not enough fish in the sea to continue to feed an ever-expanding human population. It is a simple concept to understand – more humans eating fish, directly or indirectly (i.e. fishmeal), contributes to further diminishment of fish. This diminishment means diminished supplies, resulting in increased subsidization to provide more efficient technology to extract even more of the diminishing supplies. Unless the subsidies are cut, this diminishment will result in collapse. I call this the “economics of extinction.” There must be a global moratorium on all industrialized fishing. And there must be a global cessation on the killing of whales. We need to return whale and fish populations to pre-exploitation levels. The focus must be on revitalizing bio-diversity in the sea in order to address climate change and diminishment of phytoplankton oxygen production. The solutions to climate change are simple but, unfortunately, the solutions are not what anyone will be discussing in Paris, at least not at the gathering of world leaders. The solutions are: 1. An end to the ecologically destructive greenhousegas-producing animal slaughter industry that emits more greenhouse gases annually than the entire transportation industry. 2. A global moratorium on all industrialized fishing operations.

54

3. An end to the killing of whales by anyone, anywhere for any reason. The collapse of ocean biodiversity and the catastrophic collapse of phytoplankton and zooplankton populations in the sea will cause the collapse of civilization, and most likely the extinction of the human species. And that is why when the ocean dies, we all die!” This makes very sobering reading, but what is it saying? In short, that the marine ecosystem is in serious jeopardy because of what we choose to eat. The message is clear- to care for the earth, we must change our eating habits. It’s not rocket science and it isn’t hard, but it’s becoming critical. One of the most shocking things about the animal agriculture industry - apart from its cruelty - is that it feeds fishmeal to COWS. Yes, natural herbivores fed fishmeal. I suppose there is some justification for this, some twisted, profit-motivated idea, but it’s still insane. The seas are literally dredged of every scrap of life - small fish -babies - that could grow huge, and anything that moves, just to be ground up into meal for - farmed King Prawns, and cow fodder. Astronomical waste and destruction, and none of it necessary, because, in this modern age, with so much variety of food available and so many ways to transport it all over the world, and super efficient storage systems, none of us need to eat any animalbased foods at all. It’s so simple. If you want to protect the oceans and all their wonderful life, you go vegetarian, or -even better -vegan. You stop supporting animal farming and commercial fishing -this would be to do something amazing for wildlife and for the health of the entire planet. We can build ponds and plant trees, feed the birds in our gardens and join the RSPB or whatever, but none of these actions will make any real and lasting difference, if we fail to protect our oceans and, instead, spend our money supporting the most wasteful, polluting, unsustainable and ecologically devastating industries we have ever invented. It is also undoubtedly true that the human attitude to other animals is responsible for all instances of poaching and persecution of wildlife. Chris Packham’s latest campaign is to abolish grouse moors, because hen harriers are being shot, trapped and poisoned to protect the shooting ‘rights’ of

people I can only consider to be thugs and wildlife criminals. Perhaps if we did not grow up to view other creatures as on earth for us to use in some way, whether it be for entertainment, sport, clothes or food, we might still have a bio-rich planet and proper laws to protect wilderness. Cake and Bake Tart Bourdaloue This classic French tart has a lovely rich almond frangipane filling. Choose pears that are firm, but not rock hard. Ingredients: • 225g ready-made puff pastry • 75g unsalted butter, softened • 75g caster sugar • 2 medium eggs, beaten • 1 tsp almond extract • 75g plain flour • 100g ground almonds • 3 firm pears, peeled, halved and cored • 2 tbsp apricot glaze, warmed (see Tip)

Serves 6 - 8 Ready in 1 hour 30 minutes, plus chilling

TIP

Look out for small jars of apricot glaze in the baking sections of supermarkets, or make your own by pushing 3-4tbsp of warmed apricot jam through a fine-holed sieve.

1. Roll out the puff pastry on a lightly floured surface

and use to line a 23cm round fluted flan tin. Trim the edges and prick the pastry all over with a fork. Chill in the fridge for 30 minutes.

2. Beat the butter and sugar together in a bowl until

pale and fluffy. Gradually beat in the eggs, then the almond extract. Sift over the flour and fold in with the ground almonds to make a smooth mixture. Preheat the oven to 200C/fan 180C/Gas 6. Place a heavy baking sheet in the oven to heat up.

3. Spread the mixture in an even layer in the chilled

pastry case. Place one pear half, cut side down, on a board. Using a sharp knife, carefully slice widthways through the pear half about 10 times. Repeat with the other pear halves, keeping them in their shape.

4. Arrange the sliced pears on top of the almond

mixture, fanning them out slightly. Place the flan tin on the hot baking sheet and bake for 30 minutes. Reduce the oven temperature to 180C/fan 160C/ Gas 4 and bake for a further 20-25 minutes until golden. Cover the tart loosely with foil for the last 15-20 minutes of the cooking time to prevent the top from over-browning.

5. Leave the tart to cool for 10-15 minutes then glaze

the top with the warmed apricot glaze. Serve warm or cold with crème fraiche, if liked.

Golden Years Memories of 50 years ago It’s a constant source of amazement to me how close one of the most valuable franchises in TV history came to fizzling out. But Star Trek – first shown on NBC on 8th September 1966 and cancelled after only three seasons – only just escaped that fate and its creator, Gene Roddenberry, ruined his health and nearly went bankrupt fighting for its survival. After war service as a bomber pilot Roddenberry became an airline pilot, but quit after a serious air-crash and joined the Los Angeles Police public information office instead. He started writing TV scripts after acting as consultant on a courtroom drama series, and in 1956 he quit the police to go full-time, working mainly on cop shows and westerns. He was fired from a series about a Mississippi paddle-steamer for insisting that there ought to be at least one black cast member, a stance on racism that became a hallmark of his, but apart from that incident his career quickly blossomed and he soon started producing as well as writing. His first successful pitch for a series of his own led to NBC commissioning The Lieutenant, a drama set in a US Marine Corps training camp. Guest roles in its 29 episodes went to many actors later to join Star Trek, including Leonard Nimoy and Nichelle Nichols – although her episode was never aired because its themes of racism and sexual violence were considered too controversial. The Lieutenant was eventually cancelled, and Roddenberry revived an earlier idea for series about a round-the-world voyage in an airship crewed by multiethnic adventurers. The revived idea put the crew aboard a starship, though – an unusual twist at the time since although science fiction writing was in its heyday, the reputation of sci-fi on film had been so tarnished by the B-movies of the 1950s that there was very little of it about. Nonetheless, NBC financed a pilot which was tested at the end of 1964 – and flopped. But CBS was working on Lost In Space, so NBC decided to keep plugging away at sci-fi and financed a second pilot, Where No Man Has Gone Before. This time the test audiences were more receptive, and in May 1966 the first proper episode, The Man Trap, went into production. Five days before it went out, Roddenberry hosted a screening of Where No Man at the World Science Fiction Convention and got a standing ovation. But ratings didn’t live up to expectations and Star Trek looked set to be cancelled after the first season. Roddenberry therefore enlisted the help of the leading scifi writers of the day including Isaac Asimov to write to NBC urging a second season. NBC was persuaded, and Asimov also suggested a few improvements. Even this didn’t help: a third season was made after 1,000 fans marched on the studio, but it was shifted to a worse timeslot. Ratings fell again and the show was cancelled. Roddenberry took it hard. He worked desperately to revive

62

the franchise, but to no avail – a cartoon version was made in 1973, but achieved little. Meanwhile Roddenberry had turned to drink and drugs, and a divorce left him penniless. He produced several TV pilots which were never commissioned and scraped a thin living appearing at sci-fi conventions. However, more and more foreign TV stations were buying the original series and it was slowly developing worldwide cult status. The release of Star Wars in 1977 made sci-fi popular, and a second series, Phase II, was considered. The script developed into Star Trek: The Movie, which was a huge hit; Roddenberry was taken on again to write Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan; and the franchise snowballed from there. Unfortunately the drink and drugs had taken their toll on Roddenberry. He worked on Star Trek: The Next Generation in 1987, had a stroke in 1989, and died in 1991. The franchise he created currently runs to 13 films and six TV treatments; so far it’s made $4 BILLION.
