Dear Readers
How much was studying William Shakespeare a part of your educational journey? Following a quick (and pretty fascinating) straw poll of friends on Facebook it would seem that I enjoyed more than my fair share – depending on how you look at it. I recall at least 9 of them, from memory, some more enjoyable than others. We started aged 11 and studied at least one a year. Sadly the great bard does not feature so prevalently these days in the curriculum. I understand that children should study at least one Shakespeare play during their GSCE years, some schools do more and some the minimum, So what a pleasure to go along to the Rose theatre to see four local schools (one boys prep, one boys secondary and 2 primary) performing one work each. Daughter number 2, aged 9, was taking part in one of the productions and has studied Twelfth Night in English this term. And really fantastic they all were - taking part in a festival of 35,000 children in 130 theatres. What an amazing experience for them - to really make words written over 450 years ago come alive on a professional stage with a professional theatre producer. Sitting at our desks reading out the lines when the teacher pointed at you (and woe betide those who lost the place) didn’t have quite the same impact! With so many radio, TV and movie adaptations at our fingertips, in addition to theatrical productions, Shakespeare is really accessible to those who want him, and Father Christmas may be asked to drop a few plays down out chimney this Christmas. I LOVED it! Still on the acting theme, it’s a few years now since we last saw a school nativity play but many of you will be queuing up to get a good seat in the weeks ahead and position to see your little ones earnestly deliver lines and sing along under the weight of nerves, teatowels and tinsel. Creative parents cut, bend and cover a wire coat hanger with tinsel for the home made halo effect (with mixed results in my experience) Inventive parents go to ebay. Enjoy! Wishing you As always, a big thank you to everyone who has contributed and advertised this month. If you’re a local business wanting to reach out to your local community then why not call for a chat about affordable advertising in your local community magazine. Remember, we deliver to most homes every second month so if you’re not able to pick up a magazine on the months it’s not delivered to you, you can read it on your smart phone/tablet or PC. Worcester Park History
Taking the high road to Worcester Park by David Rymill
Christmas in Worcester Park This month’s article is a selection of Christmas memories from Worcester Park across the decades. We begin with carols, an important part of the celebrations for many people. Horace Shrubb, a chorister at St. Mary’s Church in the 1920s, remembered carol-singing at houses in and around The Avenue: “Two of the senior boys would usually go round and book into these houses – at nine o’clock on Christmas Eve it was always Mrs Clarke we went down to [on part of the land now occupied by Rushmere Court]. We used to get invited into the hall in these places, and she had a plate on a table, and there were all the sixpences in a circle round, and we were given sixpence each.” Meanwhile, at St John’s, Old Malden, the Misses Wheeler of Worcester Park House (off Old
Malden Lane) were generous to the choir: Daisy Tolley recalled “At Christmas time, when my brothers were in the choir, they used to be given an envelope, and the eldest one used to get, I think, two shillings, and the young used to get a shilling – that was their Christmas box from the ladies.” The Misses Wheeler also held children’s Christmas parties: “we always used to be invited; they used to have a huge Christmas tree, and presents on it, in the house.” The Wheelers regularly provided floral decorations for St John’s from their garden or glasshouses, such as holly, white chrysanthemums and winter cherries for Christmas 1892. Douglas Bryan recounts a carol-singing memory involving the 1940s Prisoner of War camp on the corner of Malden Road and South Lane: “One Christmas, the carol singers from New Malden Methodist Church stood outside the wire of the camp and sang ‘Holy Night’. The German prisoners came out of their huts and sang ‘Holy Night’ in German – which was a lovely and moving memory to the New Malden folk.” A more unusual location for a choir was the Odeon Cinema, which stood on the lower corner of Windsor Road (now occupied by Pizza Express). Eve Salmond, who grew up in Central Road in the 1940s, recalls: “We all loved going to Saturday morning pictures there, and I remember being in a choir there where we were in a competition with other cinemas to see who would be the best choir for Christmas.” Cooking is also an important feature of the Christmas season; Sheila Tate describes how local people whose ovens were too small could have their turkeys cooked at the bakery on the corner of Longfellow Road (now the Halifax) run from 1909 by her grandfather John Morley and his wife, and then by her father, also John, until the 1970s. Mrs Tate also remembers that, when she was a child, quantities of fondant fancies would be brought home at Christmas time for them to put in paper cases ready for sale. The Park House offices in Park Terrace were built in the 1970s replacing a parade of shops. The corner shop was a butcher’s by the 1870s. This had been taken over by 1898 by Alan Woods, and at Christmas 1908, according to the Surrey

Comet, “Much interest was manifest in the annual competitions of guessing the weights of the prize bullock and the pig’s head at the shop of Mr A W Woods … In all there were between 400 and 500 entrants for the former … The actual weight of the bullock was 68 stone 2 lbs, and Mr G Lane was awarded the prize for his guess of 68 stone 3½ lbs.” Making Christmas puddings might call for some inventiveness: Mary Ralph recalls that “To help in the making of Christmas puddings, Mum would ask the assistants [at Clifford Birdsall’s pastrycook’s shop in Malden Road, opposite Plough Green] to save breadcrumbs for her.” Martyn Maull, who grew up in no. 65 Cheam Common Road, recalls that, into the early 1950s, “We had a scullery which had the copper in the corner, which dealt with everything from hotting up bathwater to cooking Christmas puddings.” Not only bakers and butchers are busy over Christmas: Dr Lloyd-Williams, of the Manor Drive Health Centre, once had “thirteen house calls on one Christmas Eve without the use of a mobile phone.” Other local residents have contributed to Christmas celebrations further afield: John Rowe recalls that John Merrylees of 51 Highdown “was a commercial artist. When the Queen and Princess Margaret were young, they used to do a Christmas pantomime every year at Windsor Castle, and he used to paint the scenery for them.” The designer Beverley Pick, who bought 57 Salisbury Road (the thatched house on the corner of Cromwell Road) in 1948, designed the Regent Street Christmas decorations in 1955, featuring 1,200 snowflake-shaped stars. Christmas in 2014 will as usual be celebrated

in the local churches: at St Mary’s Church at the top of The Avenue (KT4 7HL) the services will include a Carol Service at 6.30pm on Sunday 21st December, Christingle Crib services at 3pm and 5pm on Christmas Eve, and sung Communion services at 11.30pm on Christmas Eve and 10am on Christmas Day. Earlier in the month, after the 9.30am service at St Mary’s on Sunday 7th December, from about 10.45am, there will be a Christmas mini market with stalls selling produce, cakes, hand-stitched cards and knitted toys. St Mary’s will also be hosting a Christmas Concert by Epsom and Ewell Silver Band on the 7th, at 7pm. This will include entertaining music, seasonal or otherwise, and some carol singing, plus refreshments. Tickets will be on sale on the door for £10, or in advance from 01372 436197 or 020 8330 4296. The 9.30am service on 14th December will provide a Jewish perspective on Christmas and Hanukkah, and as ever all are welcome. Our illustrations this month show a Christmas party in St Philip’s Church Hall in 1945 for children from Buckland Way, courtesy of Katherine Pollock, and a 1970s nativity play in St Mary’s. Ruth Jemmett Writes The true meaning of Christmas
Christmas means different things to different people. For the young it is a time of excited anticipation. For parents it is a time of financial pressure and social juggling. For the older generation it can be a time to reflect on times past. Even though we live in a multicultural society, the spirit of one of our major Christian festivals permeates its magic throughout all cultures at this time of year, as festive tunes emanate from radio and television (I admit it - that penguin in the ad made me cry!), and shopping malls echo to the sound of “Ho, ho,ho!”. Unless you live on the moon it is impossible to hide from yuletide celebrations. Even the most dull-looking suburban streets in Worcester Park suddenly become transformed into wonderlands, as glitz (and let’s face it - a certain amount of kitsch!) takes over homes and gardens. There are definitely fashions in Christmas decorations. Many years ago gingerbread men biscuits and life-threatening lit candles would adorn the yuletide trees. When I was a child, growing up in the 1950s, Lametta - which was basically shredded silver foil - would festoon most indoor trees, and choke the odd dog or cat! These days small blue or white fairy lights festooned around the house or garden are the ‘in’ thing, and jaunty tartan bows adorn many a party venue. The demise of ‘chocolate coins’ was announced by a major confectionary firm recently. Thankfully other sweet manufacturers have not followed suit. Countless children over several generations have been entranced by the sight of the coins crammed in their tempting net holders. After all, you can’t call it a proper Christmas until at least one child in the house (whatever their age!) has sneakily purloined a packet of them, and has been sick from eating too many of these yummy treats! Unfortunately our increasingly techno world means that traditional Christmas gifts for children are taking a back seat. (Oh, how I loved my hoola hoop back in the day - and would go into ecstasies over my Post Office set!). Simple toys such as colouring books or marbles are often scoffed at, as even very young children are lusting after owning their own mobile ‘phones or latest computerised game. One feels sorry for today’s young parents as they are bombarded with advertisements from every angle,
that make them feel guilty if their little Gemma or Johnny doesn’t have the very latest clever bit of technological wizardry. Speaking as someone who thought she was the nearest thing to Stephen Hawking when she first submitted an article from a laptop, I can tell you that the average six-year old can often make me feel very inadequate indeed! Somewhere in the middle of the yuletide mayhem there is the true meaning of what all the excitement is about. Churches suddenly sprout banners reminding us to attend special services. Many people, who normally never go near a church, suddenly get overtaken by a warm fuzzy feeling (sadly, often the result of having indulged in one festive sherry too much the night before!) and like to be seen to be doing their bit. Charities, of course, try and capitalise on the atmosphere that surrounds Christmas, by tugging at our heartstrings a little harder than usual, as they know that we will be in a spending mood. How sad it is that our willingness to be compassionate to others cannot extend to the rest of the year. It is estimated that only 8% of us donate consistently

to worthy causes. Why does it take the sight of a snowman or a bit of holly to make us more generous? People are homeless, starving or ill EVERY day of the year ….. What started off, a long time ago, as a simple celebration of the arrival of Jesus Christ on this earth, has somehow evolved into a rather noisy circus that often blots out the image of the nativity. Of course the occasion can highlight the fact that we love the people in our lives, which is a good thing, but far too many of us put ourselves out to show such affection only on high-days and holidays. As we indulge in a veritable bun-fight to see who can give the biggest gift, or hold the most impressive party at Christmas, we sometimes overlook the fact that true love is constant. Of course it is wonderful to show people that we care, but so often we haven’t put ourselves out for that person during the preceding twelve months, and hope that a fondue set or pair of gloves will make up for the fact that we ‘forgot’ to ring them when they were ill, or stayed away from them when they were bereaved. We wouldn’t be human if we didn’t find some people hard work - and let’s face it, some of them can try our patience above and beyond the call of
16
duty ! - but perhaps at this special time we can reflect on what we could do to make their lives a little happier ALL the time. As many of you know, I am a keen gardener, and sometimes whilst I am tussling with weeds in my front garden, an elderly man or woman will stop to pass the time of day with me. They will often comment that “you are the only person I have spoken to during the entire weekend”. Just taking time out of our busy lives to spend a few minutes with people who might be alone in the world, can transform their demeanour and attitude. Often having a chat with a person who has been on this planet a lot longer than us, can enrich our own lives, and change their frown into a smile. No-one is born old and grumpy. Often, worry, illness or loss can make them that way, and if we are lucky enough to still be enjoying the good things in life, it really doesn’t hurt that much to share a few moments with someone who would appreciate our kindness. You could even hand them a present too, and make them realise that they aren’t forgotten. Giving doesn’t always have to involve money. The true meaning of Christmas is the giving of yourself, and the best gift that you can give anyone is your time. I keep in touch with a very elderly lady, who
Please remember to mention Worcester Park Life when you speak to our advertisers
was a friend of my late mother’s. She lives in a residential home, and when I hear her voice on the ’phone I know that talking to her won’t be easy, as she is deaf and has the beginning of dementia. When, eventually, I put the ‘phone down I have pleasure of knowing that I have left her with a smile on her face, even if my voice HAS become a bit hoarse with repetition and speaking loudly! That really IS gift without price, which anyone can give. I hope that all of you who enjoy reading Worcester Park Life have a wonderful Christmas. If the last few months haven’t been all that you would wish for, let us hope that the coming year changes your fortunes for the better. I also hope that Father Christmas brings you all the things you put on your list, be it in the form of tangible gifts, or hearing the voice of someone you love - and who loves you…. May the true message of Christmas touch you all - and may your trees jangle with chocolate coins! Ruth Jemmett is a Member of The Society of Authors

Children Easy weaning
Sara Patience lives in Worcester Park and is a registered health visitor and registered nutritionist. Her first book, Easy Weaning, was published in October and is available from Amazon and bookshops. Parents worry when their baby doesn’t eat as much as they think he/she should, or stops eating foods previously enjoyed. Other types of fussy eating can include not wanting certain textures or eating very slowly. Mealtimes can become horribly stressful for parents and baby. However, there are certain things you can do to minimise or resolve fussy eating. Babies under one are usually very open to trying new foods and this is a good time to introduce them to as much as possible, including meat, fish and vegetables. Don’t presume your baby doesn’t like a food just because they pull a face or spit something out – offer foods over and over, up to twenty times. Remember to move on with textures,
babies who stay on purée longer than needed are more likely to be fussy and eat a less varied diet. It is better to feed your baby your own home cooked foods so they can become as familiar with these foods as possible. Eating with your baby is really helpful, as they love to copy you, and brothers and sister if they have them. So, you’ve introduced your baby to lots of foods and lots of textures then one day he refuses his meal and throws the bowl on the floor. What’s going on? Toddlers often start to refuse new foods, or familiar foods presented in a new way. This fear of new foods is called neophobia and is a developmental phase believed to have developed to prevent toddlers eating something poisonous. Although this response isn’t needed in modern times, it still exists. Again, offer rejected foods over and over again. If your toddler refuses to eat it can be really worrying. Even if you feel upset don’t let your child see this and don’t try to force them to eat. When meal times are stressful children eat less. Just remove the dish and move on. Babies and toddlers are very good at knowing when they are full up.

Toddlers are notorious for eating very little for a day or two, then eating lots the next day. If your toddler is eating some foods from all food groups they are likely to be getting the right range of vitamins and minerals. If they are active and growing, they are getting the right amount of energy. Drinks such as juice can reduce your baby’s appetite, milk and water are all your baby needs. If you are worried about what your child eats, call your health visitor for help. Sara Patience www.nurtureandnourish.co.uk

Time to take a longer view I think. The papers seem to be full of pundits predicting that “the end is nigh” for stock market valuations at their current level. The auguries being cited seem to cover everything from the black arts of the Chartists, through to references to the “hallowed investment gurus” whom you are not able to criticise. From crossed graph lines to the interpretation of “Buffetery”, I am sure someone will soon be referencing the rooks flying over the City before long. So yes there will be a stock market pull back or even crash - but when nobody, of course, actually knows. When it happens there will be no doubt one who called it right, but that will be likely to be amongst the very few and the very lucky. The real question is actually - does it matter? Of course if we were to see a meltdown of catastrophic proportions then it would be devastating, but history does show us that this is a rare event - very rare. However, over the past 14 years we have seen some yawing and sickening movements up and down with all the stomach churning of a roller coaster - especially in the FTSE 100. A couple of recessions, a black swan or two floating by and a global banking crisis are usually enough for anybody. But for all this, what has happened? Well as you can see from the graphs below, actually the FTSE 100 has lost money over that period. So after all the roller coaster of recovery, austerity and reconstruction, we still haven’t reached our peak of the last day of 1999. How depressing. Actually you shouldn’t be depressed. If you look at the second graph you will see a good steady trend and in fact if you had included the dividends, then Chart 1 FTSE 100 Source - Bloomberg
22
instead of losing 4.8% over 14 years you would have made a relatively healthy 56.6%. The fact is that in most cases your dividends and their reinvestment are more important than the vagaries of individual stock movements. Dividends may sound dull but just look how much they contribute each year. In 2012 the figure for dividends paid was just over £80 billion, reducing marginally the following year to around £79 billion. That is the equivalent of a new BP, Unilever or Glaxo each year. Forecasts this year are for an increase to around £100 billion, but there has been the £15.9 billion special dividend from Vodafone included in that. The top five dividend payers in 2013 were Shell, Vodafone, AstraZeneca, BP and Glaxo, accounting for £7.5 billion. This should be regarded as being even more surprising when you consider that one of the traditional and usually “reliable” dividend and income providers to the market has effectively been destroyed, at least for the time being. Gone are the days when we used to be able to “rely” upon these nice little earners coming through from the banks and especially the respectable income that was the Lloyds’ dividend which regularly seemed to pay more than double its best deposit rates. Those days are gone and in fact may never return - certainly in that form again. Time to change your mattress? ADVERTISEMENT
Most people sleep on it and pay the price. A tired mattress can leave you feeling just as tired too

s your mattress over 7 years old, saggy or just not as comfortable as it used to be? Putting off replacing it can lead to disturbed sleep, morning tiredness, stiff neck and back ache. In fact, it’s the main reason for lack of sleep for most people – they just don’t realize it. NOVEMBER 2014 PROPERTY MARKET UPDATE Surprise Surprise Between all our team members we have an ample catalogue of tales about the ups and downs of the house moving process. There isn’t a lot that we haven’t seen or dealt with before. There are occasional delightful surprises, bringing a smile to our faces, and there are bewildering surprises that often make for more animated snippets of conversation. Obviously we prefer those moments when things go unexpectedly well but the little problems that occur from time to time serve to keep us on our toes and can certainly add interest to the day. This month we added a couple of new experiences to our storybook. The first came to light when our lettings manager accompanied one of our favourite landlords to a previously privately let property. The departing tenants had supposedly vacated, though we knew they still had some bits to collect later in the week. Unsurprisingly the few ‘bits’ turned out to be quite a number of boxes, piles of clothing and various bags of effects left randomly around the flat. So far so usual. Less expected was the point at which one of the piles on the floor began to move! Now we are used to spiders, and can take rubbish and grime in our stride, but our landlord was very lucky not to find our lettings manager jumping into his arms to escape. There was a moment of shock and astonishment before the truth was revealed. There in a huddle on the floor we discovered 5 jet black snoozing kittens each about the size of your palm, at which point our hearts melted and our landlord could breathe easy again. Having established that the mother cat and kittens were unwanted, and without food or water, we arranged for Veterinary Assist (huge thanks to them), to collect all the cats as soon as they could. Meanwhile we popped in to feed and water them for a couple of days, and of course have a little cuddle. We are delighted to report that all the cats now have new homes to go to as soon as they are ready to be separated. Phew! Not to be outdone our sales team added to their anecdotes this month courtesy of an out of area corporate conveyancing company that we will not be adding to our list of recommendations. Whilst their services are very affordable their communication skills are less than impressive, which is regrettable as they had allocated our buyers sale and purchase to two different departments. The team dealing with the their sale reached the point where exchange was possible and, without checking the onward chain, did exactly what they had been working towards, selected a completion date and exchanged. Unfortunately the purchase team were nowhere near the same stage, and therefore could not follow suit, leaving our buyer at very real risk of imminent homelessness. Somehow we needed to encourage all parties to fast track a couple of week’s processes into just a few days. Several hours of phone calls, plenty of checking for updates, redelivery of paperwork and a lot of adrenaline later we achieved the happy ending that was so very nearly thwarted. Of course most of our days are reassuringly surprise free but sometimes somebody somewhere drops the ball. At Jackson Noon we are never afraid to pick that ball up and run with it to help our clients, or the occasional kitten. We may gain a few extra grey hairs as a consequence but the end result is always well worth the additional work and determination we put in to every property let or sale. We always try to avoid surprises but we do love the smiles when our clients move into their new home.

Gardening
I’m dreaming of a green Christmas Pippa Greenwood
With Christmas just around the corner, there is always plenty to do. True the garden side of things may be a little less busy than usual, but everything else seems to be going into overdrive. I love giving presents, whether that gift is a thing of beauty or something totally practical. With gardening as one of the nation’s top pastimes, here are a few ideas for things which I am sure most green fingered friends would be delighted to receive. If you know a newish gardener then the basic tools are always well received, especially if you choose good quality, sturdy ones. So think fork, spade and rake – yes, they are difficult to wrap but worth the effort. For anyone gripped by the Grow Your Own bug you could give one of my ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood ‘ gift cards – they choose the veg they want to grow and I send them out, at the right time for planting and accompanied by weekly advice and tips emails….it couldn’t be simpler! Find out more at www. pippagreenwood.com Weeding is always an issue so a hoe is useful or for smaller spaces (such as in between plants, in gravel, between paving, or to tackle weeds within planters) try the hand held red-handled weeders – I think they’re indispensable. A few packets of vegetable seeds are always appreciated and most garden centres already have a good variety in stock. If you want to spend a bit more, a heated propagator makes a fantastic gift. With tomatoes, peppers, aubergines and many of the fancier ornamentals needing to be sown soon, it’ll be a gift put to use straight away. Gardening gloves too are something we can always have more of. Some of the gauntlet style gloves are perfect if you have to tackle a pruning job on a thorny plant or one with really rough or sharp leaves. Alternatively, there are many lower-priced types available with gripping pads on the fingers or with leather toughened strips across the knuckles. Classic greens, ravishing reds or funky florals, gloves are definitely not boring. Birds in the garden not only help to keep pest numbers down, but they also add charm which everybody appreciates. A peanut feeder, nest box or perhaps even a bird table will attract them in and there are many designs available from modern to rustic.
36
For the ‘other half’ who is less inclined to help with the tough jobs in the garden, admit defeat and give them a garden lounger or even a hammock. As container gardening continues to rise in popularity, another idea is to give a few gorgeous looking containers - either empty for the friend or relative to decide what to put in it themselves, or make them into a complete gift by planting them up with a selection of plants and under planting them with bulbs which you know will bring extra delight next year. Finally, houseplants such as poinsettias, cyclamen, indoor azaleas and jasmines are perfect for providing bright colour indoors at this time of year. But remember when you buy any indoor plant during cold weather, it is essential that you protect it thoroughly on the journey from the shop to your car and from your car into your house as even a tiny exposure to cold drafts and low temperatures can cause damage. Visit www.pippagreenwood.com for a great rate of Gardening-related Gifts including stylish ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ gift cards, Pippa’s favourite weeding tool, signed books and lots of useful garden items for your friends & family…or for yourself!

The better life BL 30 Here’s Looking At Yule, Kid
Derek Thompson www.alongthewritelines.blogspot.co.uk
Even though we’ve had it planned for months, Christmas is always a magical time. Our decorations go up late - sometime between the Winter Solstice and Christmas Eve - apart from the wreath that Anne makes from anything seasonal in the garden or the woods. It’s a Heath Robinson affair with holly, hebe, laurel, pinecones, acorns, or anything else we see on our travels. (One year it included a little plastic helicopter, until Anne made me take it off.) In lieu of an indoor tree, I’ve started hanging baubles on the silver birch in the garden. We’ll skip the village carol service - you may recall ‘Carolgate’, where we ended up sitting in the pulpit due to a scarcity of seats - but we’re certainly not of the “Bah! Humbug!” brigade. (A bar of chocolate would be a different matter altogether) I know I’ll wake up early on the big day like an excitable child. We’ll begin with the ceremonial unwrapping of the cat’s present, accompanied by tea. After that it’s a small present each, quite possibly swapping packets of heritage seeds, and then off to the beach. If the tides are with us we’ll hunt beach glass for that mosaic we’ve been saving up for, along with any weathered crockery pieces. After a bracing walk across the sand, it’s back home for festive (cinnamon) porridge and present time again. This year I’ll surprise Anne with a new addition to her charm bracelet - an Irish thruppenny bit, sporting a hare. It’s nostalgic recycling, as it was once a part of my boyhood coin collection. Both of us have a thing for hares. We’ve gone back down the sloe gin route this year, after I promised not to say that it tastes like medicine again (don’t worry, she never reads these columns until the following month). In fact, this year it’s a Better Life Christmas altogether. Anne’s chicken is locally sourced, while my nutroast is my own work (I think we all realise that Anne will probably need to rescue it). Similarly, the veg is either homegrown or produced in the area. We’ve skipped festive crackers so that I can read from a list of jokes I wrote and couldn’t sell. For example: This year, due to cutback, Father Christmas is only making ‘Made in China’ stickers. The eagerly awaited Christmas pud is Anne’s pet project; she’s been feeding it with a monthly sup of brandy since last December, so it’ll definitely flambé! She has also promised icecream (we got the machine
42
cheaply through an ad in the local paper) using some blackberries from the freezer. And Anne’s big present? Well, in the past we’ve had a fox, bats, a toad, shrews, moles and at the very least a hedgehog poo in the front garden, so I thought it’d be fun to capture some evidence. The new wildlife camera can take pictures in daylight or at night-time, so at the very least we’ll see just how active the cat is nowadays. In the evening there’ll be cards or a Scrabble tournament, as we watch the Yule log burning and argue over whether you’re allowed to put down ‘zo’ if you can’t say what it is. Then, after victory and defeat, we’ll raise a glass of sloe gin by candlelight and start thinking about the Boxing Day garden tidy-up. Cheers!

Recipe
Roast turkey with leek, apricot and chestnut stuffing Serves 8-10 Ready in approx 4 ½ hours, plus resting time
Y O U
Roasting the turkey in a ’tent’ of buttered foil will keep it moist and succulent. Always allow time for the cooked bird to rest in a warm place before carving. 100g butter 1 tbsp olive oil 1 leek, trimmed and chopped 2 shallots, peeled and finely chopped 75g ready to eat dried apricots, finely chopped 150g fresh white breadcrumbs 100g cooked chestnuts, finely chopped 2 tbsp fresh thyme leaves 5.4kg oven-ready turkey, giblets removed 16 cocktail sausages 4 rashers smoked streaky bacon Fresh herbs, to garnish 1 Heat half the butter and the olive oil in a frying pan and fry the leek and shallots for 6-7 minutes until softened. Remove from the heat and stir in the apricots, breadcrumbs, chestnuts and half the thyme leaves. Season well with salt and freshly ground black pepper and leave to cool. 2 Preheat the oven to 190°C/170°C fan/gas 5. Line a large roasting tin with buttered foil. Use about one third of the stuffing mix to stuff the neck end of the turkey (press the rest of the stuffing in a shallow ovenproof dish to cook separately). Weigh the stuffed turkey and calculate the cooking time - allow 20 minutes per 450g plus 20 minutes. Place the turkey in the lined roasting tin and smear all over the skin with the remaining butter. Sprinkle over the rest of the thyme leaves and season. 3 Cover the turkey with a tent of buttered foil and roast in the preheated oven for the calculated cooking time, basting occasionally. Uncover the turkey for the last 45 minutes until the skin is golden and the juices run clear when a skewer is inserted into the thickest part of one thigh. If the juices still run slightly pink return the turkey to the oven for a further 15-20 minutes then check again. 4 Leave the turkey, loosely covered with foil, in a warm place to rest for at least 20 minutes. Stretch the bacon rashers with the back of a knife and cut each rasher in half. Wrap the short rashers around the cocktail sausages, securing with a cocktail stick. Place in baking tray and cook in the oven for 20-25 minutes

Serve the extra stuffing separately along Park Cheam with all the usual festive vegetables. Tip For a quick gravy, simmer the roast turkey juices with Learn Spañish while preparing tapas a splash of red wine and a couple of spoonfuls of redcurrant jelly. y o u r

Voice for Wildlife The Holly And The Ivy by Carol Williams
I’ve been looking at my Christmas cards and thinking about how many of them depict wildlife - snowy scenes with wild creatures, and how holly and ivy, along with fir trees, are so much a part of traditional decorations. The practice of decorating homes with holly began with the Romans who regarded it as a good luck omen. They sent holly wreaths to newly weds and used it as a gift during Saturnalia festivals. As early Christians adapted the practice of using holly for decorations, it took on religious associations - the spiky leaves representing Christ’s crown

of thorns, and the berries, his blood. In Pagan mythology, decking the halls with boughs of holly was thought to protect the home from thunder and keep children safe. Using ivy as decoration also dates back to Roman times, being associated with Bacchus, god of wine and intoxication. Ivy was a symbol of fidelity and marriage, and also of prosperity and charity, so it was adapted by early Christians to remind them to help the poor and needy. In early England, it was considered bad luck to use ivy alone as decorations for Christmas because it was believed it would give the women of the household the upper hand!! So it was usually paired with holly. “ The holly and the ivy, when they are both full grown, of all the trees that are in the wood, the

holly bears the crown” as the line of the familiar carol has it. Holly and ivy are top plants for wildlife. They will both grow well in any type of soil, in sun or shade. Berries grow on the female holly, so to have them, there must be a male plant nearby. Holly makes a safe nesting site for all kinds of birds - such as dunnocks, finches and goldcrests - because predators don’t like its prickly leaves. Its berries will be feasted upon by blackbirds, fieldfares and redwings in Winter, its flowers will attract bees. Hedgehogs, toads and slow worms may hibernate in the deep leaf litter that accumulates beneath a mature holly. The worst thing anyone interested in wildlife can do is to keep a too tidy garden, especially in the colder months - those piles of leaves are very nice bedding for so many small creatures.
Ivy can provide a Winter haven to butterflies and birds. Its flowers are an unbeatable nectar source for late flying insects about to hibernate, especially butterflies like peacocks, red admirals and small tortoiseshells, and birds will feast on the berries. It will climb over anything, so makes a great screen for ugly eyesores in the garden. It can grow to 50 ft and provides wonderful nesting opportunities for many birds. I usuallly have robins, blackbirds, wrens and blue tits in my ivy every Spring. In late Summer and Autumn it is alive with insects collecting the rich nectar. I like holly, but ivy is a special plant for me - it is vigorous, robust, tough and persistant, qualities I admire, but it is also generous with its bounty, offering so much to so many creatures. No wildlife garden is complete without it.

Before the Christmas decorations are even up, i’m thinking about when they come come down, when the parties have ceased and the diet has begun (and failed!) and all of us are left with the January blues..thankfully JDRF (the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) and the Lunchbowl Network (feeding orphans in Kibera, Kenya, lunchbowl.org) have come to our rescue, with a fabulous event for a great night out. Celebrity “Post” Quizmas is a quiz night with a difference, an evening hosted by award winning Stand up comedian Dominic Holland (pictured)
