Maleny High School student aims for Paris Olympics

Maleny High School student, Kael Thompson, 16year-old and who is currently in Grade 10 at Maleny State High School has her eyes set on performing at the 2024 Paralympics in Paris.

Kael is already a member of the Australian National Flippers Squad and has been swimming competitively for three years.

The Para Swimming National Flippers Squad is an integral part of Swimming Australia Paralympic Performance Pathway.

In June 2022 she was part of the team to represent Australia at the 2022 Virtus Oceania Asia Games in Brisbane. The Virtus games covers a number of sports, of which swimming is just one.

Already she has competed overseas for the national squad when In June she competed at the Virtus Global Games in Paris and broke the Queensland record for the 100m Breaststroke, the 50m Butterfly, and the Australian age record for the 50m Backstroke.

She also won another silver and bronze medal.

Her next challenge now is the Queensland short course event in August, then the Australian Schools long course two weeks later.

Kael’s main focus then will be to fine-tune her PB’s and preparations to compete at the Paris Paralympic games in 2024. Her preparation includes going to the physio three times a week, a psychologist once a week and training every day so it is a long journey between now and the 2024 games.

Sunshine Coast Waste Strategy 2023

As part of The Sunshine Coast Council’s commitment to becoming Australia's most sustainable region they are reviewing the Sunshine Coast Waste Strategy 2023. Each local government is required under the Waste Reduction and Recycling Act 2011 to prepare, adopt and implement a plan for managing waste in its local government area, in a way that best achieve the objectives of the Act.

The plan protection of the unique Sunshine Coast environment, both now and in the future.

The council has a policy towards zero waste to landfill by 2041.

You are invited to have your say by completing an online survey at the web address below. The survey needs to be completed prior to August 9th, 2023. The Waste Strategy is expected to be adopted by Council in October 2023.
