P O R T F O L I O Malika D A Richardson

My name is Malika Diantha Adora Richardson born and raised in Antigua. I came from a family of teachers who has devoted and dedicated their entire lives to shaping and moulding the lives of our nation’s children and has affected the educational landscape and has done so without complaints. They believe “education is the key to success in life” and instilled this value in their children while reminding me that sky is not only the limit; there is more beyond the sky we see. My father would remind me that “In all your accomplishments, remember two important things “Failure is a building block to success, do not let it get the better of you and do not forget your roots – where you came from.” Whether these words were my father’s, quotes or just old sayings, as young people, these were just “stories” and did not mean anything to us. Now, I live by these words, which direct my views on life and values. Over the years, I have worked very hard under adverse circumstances to achieve academic success. These challenges have helped develop my interpersonal skills and ability to work independently and with others. I have completed my BSc (Hons) Architectural Technol ogy studies at the University of Derby, achieving First Class Honours. My life’s purpose is to achieve my goal in architecture, which is preserving historic structures as well s implementing sustainable designs in old and new structures. I aim to encourage people to view historical sites differently, while exemplifying the role of sustainability in design. What does architecture mean to me? About Me

To me, architecture is a form of expression - storytelling. Architecture connects the past, present, and future by connecting places or cultures. The built environment is both a record of a place's history and a means of communicating that history through space. This is what I intend to do: create new designs while respecting a location's culture and architecture while also embracing cutting-edge sustainable design to lessen the negative effects on the environment, which we used to disregarded.

As part of the Computer Documentation Class, I had to produce elevations, kitchen and bathroom details, and other plans that could be approved by the De velopment Control Authority (DCA). This design features a two-story apart ment with one bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, and living room on each level.

DERBY MARKET HALL & MASTERPLAN Masterplan Preface

Derby is a city rich in history, yet it is difficult to appreciate and admire its heritage and culture. Our vision for Derby is to highlight its distinct character. To preserve and en hance existing structures in order to highlight Derby's rich past and to enjoy the vistas. In addition, strengthening the connectivity between places to create an enthralling trip across the city for both visitors and residents. While repurposing unused areas into at tractions to generate more traffic and revenue. For example, an art gallery or a retail store. As well as sharing design elements to unify design and flow across the various sites.

Project Preface

Cathedral Quarter Derby Tennant St, Derby DE1 2DB

The Market Hall is a Victorian-style market with copper and brick elements used for the roof and walls. To create a modern architecture that respects and connects both the exten sion and the original structure, copper was included into the design with timber for a softer and warmer feel to the environment. Biophilic design is also included into the design, not only to sustainably manage the building's temperature but also to create a new atmosphere.

Creating a better mix of building uses to create a 24hr city in or der to boost natural surveillance, which will increase safe ty and security for city centre residents and users. This, in turn, will offer chances for the evening and night-time economies. We also aim to increase pedestrian footfall, redevelop aban doned spaces/structures, reuse unoccupied buildings, make use of accessible access points, and demolish unlisted expan sions that are harmful to the heritage asset, views, and vistas. This would allow people to appreciate Derby by offering high-qual ity, accessible spaces for individuals, groups, and communities to gather to celebrate their heritage, family, friends, and holidays.

DERBY MASTERPLAN

There are various options to recreate Derby City in order to preserve and enhance existing structures while also high lighting Derby's rich heritage. Our goal is to develop poten tial recreational spaces while also capitalising on sights such as the World Heritage-listed Derwent River and Cathedral.

The Market Hall is one of the many sites for the proposed masterplan redevelopment. Located on Tennant and Albert Street. It may, however, be accessed from several points around the site. The Market Hall was designed to maintain its function as a market and integrate a street food market. The vision for the Market Hall is to create a much more open market and allow the market along with the street food to flow outdoors, creating a new atmosphere for the site. This will be accomplished by demolishing the current extension to the Market Hall and designing a contemporary extension to contrast to the Market Hall. To create a new attraction to Derby City to highlight rather than overshadow the Market Hall. The Market Hall location will be improved by examining concepts for green areas both indoors and externally. Along with the redesigning of the Memorial Gardens. This new concept for the Market Hall would improve day and night usage, as well as increasing footfall and connectivity to the numerous sites proposed for masterplan redevelopment.

The concept is stems from the geometry of the market windows, which led to the potential of harvesting rainwater through its design. This design concept was built on the basis of the UK's climate.
