The ‘Catfish’ Phenomenon: Do We Need To Look At The Bigger Picture?

An increase in the popularity of online dating has seen the number of Internet users finding love online rise from a reported 3% to 6% within a decade. Alongside helping people hook up, the Internet has a number of other advantages as well as disadvantages; one of these most notably is its reputation as a hotbed for crooks. Since its creation, the web has been rife with people who target the naïve under false pretences, often in a bid to procure money. In recent years, however, a documentary by Nev Schulman has brought a new type of online scammer to the public’s attention: the ‘catfish.’ To catfish is to construct a life, complete with a job title, alias, and another person’s photo, with the aim of luring someone into an online relationship. The documentary, the brainchild of Schulman following an experienced of being catfished himself, has preceded a hit TV show in which he is shown helping others who feel they are being deceived online. Building a life online by stealing someone’s identity seemingly appeals to young and old alike, who get a thrill from being able to control how other people view them. Catfish scams, according to Schulman, comprise typical
patterns. If an online profile contains photos of a person with other people, but none of these people are tagged, this should arouse suspicion. Similarly, if a profile only has professional shots of someone, this should raise red flags that a person is not who they claim to be, as it is very easy to access and redistribute professional photos online. Catfishes often claim they are in the modelling profession to support their use of professional photos. Another indication of a catfish scam is the prevalence of traumatic events, including illness or injury. This is a very common way for a catfish to avoid meeting the person that they have deceived. Additionally, these occurrences can be used to evoke sympathy from the victim, and buy the catfish more time. Online predators are happy to speak over the phone with their victims to conjure the impression of the perfect partner, by combining their own characters with their assumed identities. In almost all catfish scams, however, a person will be unable to access a webcam after repeated requests. With video calling so readily available in 2016, there is no reason why someone should not be able to see who they are speaking to in
real time. Some fraudsters may go to the extent of creating additional fake profiles posing as their friends, to support their façade. It is also possible to do a reverse Google Image search, which will show where else a photo can be found online. From my own experience of being catfished, I know firsthand how professional and convincing scammers are. Late last year, I was contacted via Instagram by who I thought was a young and incredibly good looking guy who I will call ‘Chase,’ that claimed to be from Florida. Chase told me that he travelled to the UK often, as he had a sister who lives in Essex. One particular morning, after telling me he had not long woken up, he even went so far as to send a stolen photo of his victim in bed. After a few days of messages back and forth, I told him that I would like to chat with him over FaceTime instead, as there was no other way I could be sure he was who he said he was. This was my final message to him as after this, his account could no longer be found. The TV show ‘Catfish’ has been said to make us more
privy to the dangers of online dating, but is it important to note that for some women, creating an online persona has served a more useful purpose: the confirmation that a partner is being disloyal. As farfetched as it may sound, there are women who have gone to the extreme of posing as other women, in an attempt to catch out potentially unfaithful partners. Monica Howlett, a 42 year old marketing manager, met the man of her dreams on a dating site but grew suspicious that he was still using the site after he had met her. She explains ‘ I justified what I was doing with each keystroke. I was operating under the mind-set that after all, it was I not him who had been scammed for nearly six months when he was obviously seeing and meeting other women behind my back.’ Although deceiving someone is never the right thing to do, it begs the question that if a man is willing to betray his partner with someone he has never even met, what may he be
already doing offline? Yes, duping a partner may be immoral, but have these women done themselves a favour? Separating the catfishes who cast a hook on the not-so-innocent, it’s clear that there are people who feel lonely, isolated or rejected, and these are no reasons to mislead a stranger. It goes without saying that people who resort to this kind

Are Superfoods hyped? Superfoods- foods that have supposed health benefits- have been a buzzword for health bloggers and nutritional supplement providers alike, as a result of a growing public interest in health. There are a number of foods bearing the superfood label including blueberries, beetroot and even chocolate, to name but a few. The verdict on whether particular foods possess more health benefits than others is still very much up in the air between experts, so in light of this, I will analyse the health claims behind some of the best loved superfoods. Beetroot is claimed to be a superfood due to the fact that it is a vegetable rich in nitrates. Upon consumption, these nitrates are converted by the body into nitric oxide, a chemical believed by scientists to lower blood pressure. An additional health benefit of beetroot was highlighted in a 2010 study, which suggested a link between a beetroot rich diet and the prevention of dementia, as the vegetable was shown to increase blood flow to specific brain regions. Beetroot has also been linked to improved exercise performance. Chocolate has been branded a superfood because, it is
produced from cocoa. Cocoa is loaded with health boosting minerals, including iron, magnesium and zinc, alongside antioxidants. The alleged health benefits of chocolate include it’s ability to reduce stress hormones in adults, a lowered risk of stroke, and even protection against bowel cancer. However, dietitian Alison Hornby points out that cocoa’s health benefits should be weighed against the fact that chocolate is also made with sugar and fat, meaning that “Chocolate is an energy-dense food that could contribute to weight gain and a higher risk of disease. As an occasional treat, chocolate can be part of a healthy diet. Eaten too frequently, it is an unhealthy choice.” A good source of Vitamins C and K and containing high levels of antioxidants, blueberries are the most super of the superfoods. It has been claimed that a diet high in blueberries can lower the risk of a heart attack, protect against heart disease and certain cancers,
and improve spatial learning and memory. Alison Hornby adds to this: ‘Blueberries are low in calories and high in nutrients, including phenolic compounds with an antioxidant capacity significantly higher than vitamins C or E.’ Due to their fantastic health benefits, nutritionists recommend blueberries as part of a healthy diet. While it’s true that some foods may be better for us than others, it is important to keep in mind that a superdiet, with the emphasis being on a healthy, balanced diet, is most effective to achieve optimum wellness.

Pork & Co, Canterbury price is justified. For a fiver, I could have bought a meal or a sandwich from another fast food restaurant, however, I am sure it wouldn’t have lived up to this standard.
