introduction Under the topic of ageing population, I explore the opportunity to design a better future that is senior-friendly. Dessau is the perfect place for this topic because Dessau is in top 3 European city ranking that has the most senior citizens living in. When you search on internet about senior problems, you will get load of articles about mental and health issue. I spent a month doing research on “What is the problem for senior citizen?” As a designer, I might not have the power to create high tech Innovation to cure ageing illness or Alzheimer, so I scope my topic to “What can I do to make senior happy?” Through out the research and observation, I decided to create a project that could give senior a space where they can have a healthy relaxation.

RESEARCH ONLINE RESEARCH The primary research about senior issue. I found a very interesting article about senior home business that also share space with children day care, where they share exercising and activities time together. The result of this integration is brilliant, because this bridges the generation gap, promote socialization and also reduce Depression for senior.



OBSERVATION The observation is based in Dessau. I regularly see Seniors walk in the park in sun shining day. What I attracted to the most is the way seniors hang out together on the bad weather day. In Dessau Center, i saw many seniors hang out in small groups on the bench without shopping. Some of them bring book to read. Some of them just sit there and watch people walking by. The question come to my mind‌What if there is no shopping mall, where can they gang out like this?



Concept development MACRO MICRO CHART Based on research and observation, we worked in team of 5, identifying issues and possible solutions. We projected a lot of Imagination without consideration of possibility. Finally, each person must choose 2-3 projects he/she loved and develop the initial plan for them. Pharmacy cafe derived from „Leisure/activity promote any activity to keep the senior healthy and prevent Depression.“ merging with „Control - be able to Monitor their physical performance“ I linked leisure and activity with place to hang out and socialize, cafe. Control is related to Pharmacy, in term of having health consultancy. Then, I started to develop the business plan and design.

BUSINESS PLAN A basic concept of pharmacy + cafe in Dessua is to promote senior socialization and combining service design to facilitate that process of buying medicine in a pharmacy. At the end, Cafetheke might be only suitable for he senior but can be a perfect place to hang out for health concerning people in Dessau. KEY PARTNER To understand the business is important. When you can identify all key players, you can see the overview of design process and where you can put design into. Cafetheke’s first concept is just an Bistro cafe that you can buy medicine. Since my main target group is senior, I develop Cafatheke to be a bit boring to teenagers by modifying all menu and drink to be healthy cuisine that fit for Seniors. The main concept is Healthy + Chilling space + Medication service. My key partners includes Pharmacy, Bio/organic food provider, Asian herbal company, and senior support organization. The drink are herbal Drinks from Asia, China and Thailand. And, food will be designed by nutritionist to fit with senior needs.

SERVICE DESIGN One aspect of this project is to Intervene buying medicine moment. When you hand in a prescription to a pharmacy, you have to wait to get the medicine and wait for pharmacist to validate the recipe. Or, you need to wait for a day or two, it they don’t have medicine you want in stock. I want to create a pleasant moment when you go to pharmacy. While you are waiting, you can have a zip of healthy Asian drink or coffee, or you can walk to see the arts exhibition in cafe gallery hall.

LOCATION

URBAN REDEVELOPMENT There are many abandoned beautiful in Dessau. Most of them remain perfect in term of construction and beauty. It is a good idea to renovate abandoned building to use. the location of Cafetheke is thought to be located in city center area. I found a huge abandoned building on Zerbsterstr., which is a perfect location because the building is in bar area and only 3 minute walk away from Rathaus.

ARCHITECT I imagine Cafetheke adopts a clean modern look but with cozy tone. After consult with my Architecture friend, he suggests that „Loft style“ is the perfect fit to my project. Since Dessau was a famous manufacture city, Loft style with classic brick wall element can reflect the city and also relate to seniors. wood, brick, and stone design elements blend modern and traditional design. Outdoor area with tree and garden is also provided in the cafe, with movable rooftop which can open on a sunny day and close on bad weather day. Considering the size and remaining construction of the building, I decided to keep the front design with Greek pole. And, turning the front shop on the first floor to complete window can let people see all the services Cafetheke provides.

LOGO Logo should reflect the concept of Cafetheke. When people see the Logo they should curious if this place is an Apotheke or CafĂŠ. I did a little research on Apotheke logo in Europe. Each European country has its own special design. This Gothik A wth snake is a German apotheke logo, which has been used since 1951. I designed a couple logos and do a servay of how people feel with each one. And, I ask them to pick the one that refect the concept of Cafetheke the most

BRANDING Identity branding is a crucial part to set up the image of the Cafetheke. Everything should be integrated together in the same style. As the style of the cafĂŠ will be designed in loft style the logo and retail stationaries should also adopt loft style.
