TUNIS, TUNISIA – 27 October 2008 - Youth from 11 countries on both sides of the Mediterranean will come together in a Mediterranean fishing village between 3 – 12 November 2008. The youth will meet in Ghar El-Melh, Tunisia, to share the different cultures and heritages of the people of the Mediterranean. Participants will learn about the similarities and shared influences between Mediterranean cultures, in order to achieve intercultural dialogue between the people of the Euro-Med region. They will also discuss ways to make local communities more aware of their environments and able to protect it.

Mare Nostrum is a Euro-Med Youth Project co-financed by the Euro-Med Partnership under the Euro-Med YOUTH Programme III. It is organized by UNESCO and ALESCO Club of Bardo and promoted by the Euro-Med Young Artists Network (EMYAN) <<Mare Nostrum>> (Latin for "Our Sea") was an affectionate Roman name for the Mediterranean Sea. Type of activity: Euro-Med Youth Exchange. Main Theme: Heritage and environmental conservation. Location: Ghar El Melh; a fishermen village in the north of Tunisia, located near the ancient city Utiqua which was established by the Phoenicians.

The exchange will focus on: Fishermen, Seamen and Pirates of the Mediterranean Preserving and promoting the cultural heritage of Maisons de la Mer (Houses of the Mediterranean) and their inhabitants. Protecting the Mediterranean environment and learning about the effects of climate change on Mediterranean sea life and geography.

Mare Nostrum Youth Exchange has two phases: - Before coming to the venue: Each participant must visit a fishing village in his or her country. The participant will interview members of the village youth and older generations, and collect materials representing this village's culture and heritage. The interviews and cultural materials will become part of a short documentary on the life and culture of the fishing village. - During the activity:

Biremes and Triremes (Team building activities) The participants will renovate an old house in the village, where the cultural materials from each fishing village will be displayed. Fishing Trip (exploring different fishermen techniques with the local fishermen) Corsair's day (Corsair: Pirates of the Mediterranean). Piri Reis Explorer. Producing a full-length film with the material from participants' documentaries. The participants will also produce 30 second video clips promoting the preservation of the Mediterranean Environment. Environmental activities (Plant a tree, Recycling..) Round table discussion on illegal immigration. Throughout the conference, each participant will contribute to a video blog on the project webpage.

The project has 11 partner organizations from Egypt, Turkey, Greece, Bulgaria, Italy, Sweden, France, Spain, Portugal, Morocco and Tunisia.
