Mallett is probably the largest antique shop that deals in important English furniture together with fine decorative items and unusual objects of great excellence. It has a very special hallmark of high quality and decorative individuality. The firm originated in Bath, Somerset, in 1865 but opened in London in 1910 in premises at 40 N e w Bond Street. Many shoppers in Bond Street are familiar with Mallett's fagade and pause to admire the furniture displayed in the large curved w i n d o w s on either side of the door. Few however suspect the size of the shop behind; eleven spacious showrooms on two floors. Within this building there is ample room to display a very extensive stock of furniture, including mirrors, pictures and objects. The rooms are carefully arranged to re-create the atmosphere of a private house; furniture is exhibited with an eye to the general effect and care is taken to place every piece in such a way as to complement its neighbour and show it in an exemp ary artistic room setting. It is part of our philosophy that as well as the individual excellence of antique items, each piece should take its part in being carefully placed in the creation of a room and that the making of interiors is in itself a true art form that our clients can participate in and we can help with. Within the general layout, two rooms are arranged as dining rooms, with tables and sets of chairs, as well

as sideboards or console tables against the walls. There is a panelled library with bookcases, desks and library tables. Downstairs are two large rooms, also with period panelling, containing a fine collection of walnut and early eighteenth century furniture, while other areas are designed as drawing rooms or reception rooms of a more general nature. A grotto, conceived on Italianate lines by the architect Raymond Erith, has walls encrusted with shells and currently displays items from our new glass department. From these showrooms, pieces have travelled to m u s e u m s and private collections all over the world. Mallett's are particularly proud of their close association with the major international museums. T h e Victoria and Albert M u s e u m possesses more than fifty pieces of furniture which at one time or another formed part of the stock at 40 N e w Bond Street, and many items have gone to American museums. Complementary to the important furniture are Mallett's own special productions - many different lamps and exclusive low tables of a modern stylish design incorporating special decorative or antique features. These form an important element in our approach to furnishing, a careful control of quality in a 1 its varied aspects and an insistence on an overall decorative effect. Fine antiques should be not only a sound investment but also an embellishment and a pleasure in everyday life.

MALLETT at Bourdon House

Bourdon House, in the heart of Mayfair, until 1953 the London house of the late 2nd Duke of Westminster, has an interesting history. Built for William Burdon, Esq, in the years 1723-25, during the reign of George I, the house stood amidst fields and market-gardens between the then emerging Berkeley and Hanover Squares. T h e property came into the family of the future Dukes of Westminster through the marriage of Sir T h o m a s Grosvenor, in 1677, to Miss Mary Davies (hence Davies Street), the beautiful daughter of a local yeoman. Some fifty years later this land was leased to the Burdons who, shortly afterwards, started to build a house there. Bourdon House, as our second shop, 'P' still retains the character of a three hundred vear old familv home.

Within its period setting there are three floors filled with fascinating French and Continental furniture of the 18th and 19th centuries, objets d'art, decorative pictures, bibelots and amusing accessories. T h e stock is more eclectic than that at the shop in Bond Street; it includes rare masterpieces together with unusual and exotic items and other pieces of eccentric interest. The general taste is unique in combining unusual charm with quality of design and craftsmanship. Beyond a wrought iron grill on the third floor lies a charming octagonal treasure room where fascinating Indian gold tribal jewellery is displayed. There is also an attractive paved courtyard which provides the perfect background for antique garden statuary, ornaments and furniture, which are another exclusive feature of the business.

In 1988 the Christopher Wood Gallery became part of Mallett's and both the Bond Street and Bourdon House shops exhibit paintings from this gallery, which was established in Motcomb Street, Belgravia, in 1979. It specializes in fine Victorian, Edwardian and Pre-Raphaelite paintings, watercolours and drawings. Christopher Wood is an acknowledged authority in this field and has written definitive books on the subject. He has recently completed a six part series for Channel 4 television on Victorian artists entitled T'ainters to the People'. He continues to be the Managing Director at the Gallery but also assists with paintings for the two antique businesses.

Height: 50in (127cm) Width: 27i/2in (70cm) T h e first quarter in each plaque is that of the Poulett family the three swords. O n the simpler plaque we see in the centre the three battering rams on the inescutcheon which are the arms of the Bertie family, c o m m e m o r a t i n g the 1st Earl's marriage to Bridget, daughter and co-heir of the Hon. Peregrine Bertie. O n the top right (or second quarter), we see

50

the wings of the Reyney family. Their presence here celebrates the 14th century marriage of the earliest recorded Poulett, Sir John, w h o married a Reyney. The third quarter (bottom left) has the half lion of the Denehauds. This derives from another Poulett marriage, that of Sir William to Elizabeth, daughter and heiress of John Denehaud of Hinton St. George. By this alliance, the Pouletts acquired their family home. The fourth quarter is sub-quartered with a star in the top left hand section, which forms the arms of the Vere or De Vere family. This commemorates the marriage of the 1st Earl's grandfather, John Poulett, to Catherine St. John, daughter and co-heir of Horatio Vere, a grandson of John de Vere KG, 15th Earl of Oxford. Amongst the quarterings of the more complex plaque we see again in the first, the Poulett arms, in the second, Reyney, in the third, Denehaud and in the ninth, De Vere. The fourth quarter shows three chevrons which are the arms for Archdeacons; this seems to be here in homage to the quarterings recorded at the funeral in 1665 of the 1st Earl's

grandfather. The fifth quarter has one of the most famous arms in England - the lion rampant. This also appears in the eleventh quarter of the Garter stallplate of the 1st Earl but, as this is a crest borne by m a n y families, a specific connection has not yet been m a d e to the Pouletts. The sixth quarter shows the arms of the Mortimer family, but genealogical research has not yet found the connection between the Pouletts and the Mortimers. The seventh quarter is the Gifford family, the arms being three lions passant. This appears on the 1st Earl's stallplate and on his grandfather's funeral certificate. In the centre of the bottom we have the three crescent moons of the Kenn family. In about 1615, the 1st Earl's great grandfather married Elizabeth, daughter of Christopher Ken or Kenn of Somerset. From these two plaques, can be traced the marriages and alliances of the Poulett family to many great families of England and, in c o m m o n with other complex examples of heraldry, represent a fascinating slice of English history.

J o h n Roger Arnold w a s the son of J o h n Arnold, o n e of the pioneers of naval c h r o n o m e t e r s w h o s e works travelled with Captain C o o k aboard the Resolution. T h e elder Arnold had m a d e his n a m e with an extraordinary miniature half-quarter repeating watch. T h e w h o l e m o v e m e n t m e a s u r e d only fractionally more than a half inch in diameter. This watch was presented to G e o r g e III in J u n e 1764, for which Arnold was rewarded with 500 guineas. J o h n Roger joined his father's business in 1787 having studied in Paris with o n e of the greatest of French clockmakers - Breguet. Father and son worked successfully together combining English precision and French elegance, until the father's death in 1799. Both had been admitted as m e m b e r s of the Clockmakers C o m p a n y , the father in 1783, the son in 1796. J o h n Roger himself b e c a m e Master in 1817. After his father's death, J o h n Roger w e n t into partnership with E. J. Dent. This was also a highly successfu partnership, continuing the family tradition for beautifully made, very accurate clocks. Sadly, the end of the partnership and the early death of his son, brought the Arnold business in to decline. T h o u g h it is recorded that there was no fall in quality, the n u m b e r of pieces produced was dramatically reduced. John Roger Arnold died in 1843, no longer in business.

The derivation of this very distinctive Russian centrc-piece is unclear. What is known, is that this sort of ornament is not seen outside the Russian states. There are two such pieces at the Pavlosk Palace and another two in the Winter Palace. It seems, however, that these works were made somewhat in homage to the extraordinary tempietto in the malachite room of the Winter Palace. It is about f5 feet tall and is built from massive pieces of malachite and gilt bronze. The architect/ designer Woronkhin is usually acknowledged to be the foremost proponent of Neo-Classicism in Russia and he probably designed the fiermitage tempietto.

A machine for writing and drawing An extremely rare late 18th century version of the polygraph, invented by Mark Brunei and patented under the title of 'A Machine for Writing and Drawing' in 1799, patent no 2305. T h e design shows an adaptation from a portable folding writing desk; a mahogany frame attached to the slope supports a brass and ebony mechanism, which allows two pens connected by a brass rod to move in three planes in unison. T h e writing box's drawer contains rulers and specially divided compartments so that the whole mechanism can be folded away. England, circa 1800 Height: 41in (104cm) Width: 20in (51cm) Depth: 23in (58cm) According to Brunei's specification, the m a c h i n e was manufactured and sold by I. H. Farthing of Cornhiil, L o n d o n . This particular m a c h i n e is n u m b e r e d 174 and is very similar to the m a c h i n e in the Burghley House collection. Aside from the Burghley writing machine, there is only o n e o t h e r model k n o w n , which is an incomplete one, in the London Science M u s e u m . O n e of the most intriguing features of the writing machine is that no two machines are absolutely identical. As the construction of these m a c h i n e s progressed, the design b e c a m e simpler. This o n e being only n u m b e r 174, is o n e of the most complicated of the constructions k n o w n .
