President’s Foreword Welcome to the 2022 NEAC Annual Exhibition. Our members will tell you these are the most important paintings they do each year, and as you can see, they have – yet again – really pulled it out of the bag! The open submission was as great in numbers and quality as it has ever been. We are delighted to be attracting such a wealth of talent. As ever, I would like to thank our sponsors and supporters including Richard & Alison Chenevix-Trench for their enduring generosity year on year and Chris Beetles who supports many of our individual artists in addition to his generosity to the Club as a whole. We are grateful, of course, to all our prize-givers and I am very pleased to announce two new prizes: ‘The Milner Prize for an Emerging Artist’ and ‘The Anthony J. Lester Art Critic Award’. Thank you to both donors. It has already been a good year for the NEAC, with successful exhibitions at Chris Beetles Gallery in February, and a selected show at Panter & Hall in March. We are back in post-lockdown force as a prominent exhibiting society! We have also made good progress in developing our new scholarship scheme which you can read about in the following pages. In the NEAC engine room, our incredible behind-the-scenes team of Barry O’Donovan and Jess Miller has developed a brand-new website with all the bells and whistles anyone could wish for. Do take a look at www.neac.co.uk Congratulations to Dennis Gilbert who, in January, joined Diana Armfield in the

over-100 Club. He will tell you he is catching her up. We believe that to have two centenarians in our membership is a first for the Club’s history and we are delighted that both continue painting with full vigour. The NEAC is a society of artists who, for the most part, quietly get on with drawing, painting and printing. It is what drives us and what we live for. We are not by nature proficient self-publicists and whilst those in the know respect the Club, the NEAC sadly is not quite a household name. This is ‘sad’ in that if our qualities were better known, we could perhaps reach and empower those with promise who may not be in an economic position to consider the career of an artist as an option.
Thus, our future aim is to attempt to reach this hidden talent and to encourage and nurture it. The prizes we offer help towards this aim, as do our Education Programme’s classes and workshops; and our exhibitions provide a platform to showcase our offering. However, to spread the word, there is something our supporters and followers can do to help: Talk about us. Word of mouth is a powerful tool. It’s unlikely, this time next year, that we will be mentioned in households across the nation over bowls of cornflakes. But if something appeals to you on these walls, if you cannot buy it, tell someone about it. We hope you find something. Peter Brown PNEAC

The Land and the Mind
Thomas Hennell
The first major reappraisal of the life and work of watercolourist
In this year’s NEAC Annual Lecture, Jessica Kilburn – author of the recently published book, Thomas Hennell: The Land and the Mind (Pimpernel Press) – will describe who Hennell was, and illustrate why his work deserves to be more widely known today. She will show images of Hennell’s paintings and drawings (many discovered in private collections and never reproduced before), revealing an artist of a rare and versatile achievement.
and war artist Thomas Hennell in over thirty years THOMAS HENNELL (1903–45) said his aim was to ‘surprise his subject’ – to capture the transient quality of the moment. In watercolour he found his perfect medium, producing work which was, as his fellow artist Edward Bawden said, ‘fully expressive and technically perfect’. During an idyllic childhood in rural Kent Hennell discovered his love of the English countryside. He explored its fields, farms and woods, and later, travelling on a rusty old bicycle, developed an appreciation of England’s traditions and crafts. Much of his work records the countryside in a state of change, imbuing his sense of loss with poetic intensity. In the early 1930s, Hennell suffered a severe breakdown and later described the three years he spent in mental hospitals in his memoir The Witnesses (1938), an astonishing document in a period when stigma still attached to mental illness. Hennell’s remarkable talent for friendship survived his years of mental turmoil. Jessica Kilburn’s new biography brings Hennell the man vividly to life through extracts from his letters to friends and personal accounts by people who knew him. As this richly illustrated book shows, the artist’s final years were exceptionally productive. In 1943 Hennell was appointed an official war artist, yielding commissions in Iceland and northern Europe. After the pastoral evocations of inter-war England, his portrayal of war’s brutality is shocking: devastated French towns, emaciated prisoners of war. At the war’s end, Hennell received a final posting to the Far East. Tragically, he was caught up in the struggle for independence in Java and
Hennell was elected a member of the NEAC in 1943. His godson, Richard Bawden, is among the current members, and it was Richard’s father who summed Hennell up so adroitly: I S B N 978-1-910258-62-0

in late October 1945 disappeared in circumstances which Jessica Kilburn recreates more fully than in any previous account. Thomas Hennell was born into a remarkable generation of English artists that included Eric Ravilious, John Piper, Graham Sutherland and Barbara Hepworth. His peers regarded him as one of their finest creative talents; Jessica Kilburn’s sensitive and deeply researched new biography

‘Jessica Kilburn’s magnificent new biography... is so sympathetic, thoroughly researched and well-illustrated, that Hennell, unclassifiable individual that he was, can at last be seen to justify the claims made for him as the greatest English watercolourist of the twentieth century.’ Timothy Wilcox, The Burlington Magazine

NEAC Education Programme 2022 ‘The Great Unlocking’ proceeded at pace as far as the NEAC’s Education Programme was concerned. Both the autumn and winter terms saw a number of classes given; again, at Heatherley’s School of Art; again, to diligent and enthusiastic students. I gave just one myself and it was a pleasure to see old friends as well as new faces in the creatively messy studio which the Principal of Heatherleys makes available to us. Hats off to her generosity. This has been my last year as Curator of the Education Programme. I took on the role at the request of the President when it became vacant in 2019, and it has not – of course – been a particularly straightforward business in the main. The pandemic, closed premises, restrictions and – above all – uncertainty, sent us into educational limbo for quite a time. But we are striding forward again. A new team, rather than just an individual, will take over the organisation of our Education Programme. Among other things, it is hoped that we may secure the use of premises at times other than just Saturdays and that regular life drawing sessions will again be provided.

Juliet Levy
Just like the old days. This year’s Scholars, Juliet Levy and Nicholas Baldion, have been energetic and have sought out NEAC artists (in their studios) to talk to, to observe, or in some instances, to work with. I think the process is instructive for the artists as well as for the Scholars: it does one good to be asked questions sometimes. This coming Scholarship year, 2022-23, will be the last under the present dispensation. Our Scholarships will take a new form as Pete the President has outlined elsewhere in the pages of this catalogue.

NEAC Scholarships – The Future One of the prime feathers in the cap of the NEAC Education Programme is our Scholarship scheme. Each year, we select two scholars who receive an award of £250, free access to all our classes and workshops, and mentorship from NEAC members of the scholars’ own choosing. It is an excellent scheme, but we would like to make it better. We are very keen to add a third scholarship, offering an award of £5,000. This has been generously backed by Bath-based property developer Trevor Osborne who is providing half the money and also offering studio space for a period of time in Porthleven alongside inclusion in the Porthleven Festival. If you would like to join in supporting this scheme, please get in touch (see below). We will be launching this new award in January 2023 with our first new £5,000 Scholar starting in June of that year. The support and encouragement of emerging artists is a really important aspect of the NEAC’s ethos which our members support wholeheartedly, happily giving their time to mentor and teach. Two years ago, we lost Ann Le Bas. She left much of her studio contents to the club. I was lucky enough to spend a day looking through her studio and her life’s work at her home in Devon. One picture sang out to me, and we are offering it for sale at this year’s exhibition. We are also offering an artist’s-proof etching made from the drawing. All proceeds will go towards the Scholarship scheme.

Your lasting legacy will help the Club to continue championing the best in figurative art by supporting established and emerging artists.
Hooray for Halliday
It is no exaggeration to say that Charlotte Halliday has been quietly running the New English Art Club from behind the scenes for some 57 years. In August 2022, Charlotte will step down from her role as Keeper of the NEAC, a post she has held for 33 years. Charlotte was elected a member in 1958 whilst Rodney Burn was Honorary Secretary*. She joined the committee in 1965, by which time Burn had been replaced by Vincent Lines. Charlotte worked with Lines until his death in 1968, then with William Bowyer until 1998, and continued during the reign of the next five presidents. She was elected as Keeper (succeeding Edward Bishop) in 1989.
During Bill Bowyer’s term of office, she and Bob Brown formed a formidable duo. Full of energy, they were the swan’s legs frantically but effectively paddling below the surface of the water. Together they tirelessly catalogued our exhibitions, communicated with the membership, and sorted NEAC logistics, whilst we members moaned feebly about filling in our labels and floundered in our attempts to attach the right mirror plates or string to our pictures. Charlotte’s knowledge of the NEAC is unsurpassed. Her 64 years of membership and 57 years of service on the committee bring a unique understanding of the club’s evolution, including significant points,
*At this point in NEAC history, the club was headed by an Hon Sec rather than a President.
such as the birth of the FBA and the move from Suffolk Street to Mall Galleries. This knowledge, as well as her intelligence, cool head and sense of humour, have been of immeasurable value to the club. As each successive committee comes up with the next ‘big idea’, she refrains from rolling her eyes, referring instead to her archive of minutes, and informing us of the numerous times this ‘idea’ has already been raised and trialled in past years. Don’t think for a minute that Charlotte has not managed to keep up with the times. She skilfully operates her iPad (as indeed does her cat Alexander, according to her
Drawing of Charlotte drawing by her father Edward last Christmas card). Whilst not fond of them, she has embraced Zoom meetings, and partaken in online choir rehearsals. I will miss Charlotte’s beautifully scripted agendas and minutes, but most of all I shall miss her company on the committee, rocking up after negotiating London traffic from North London on her – now hybridelectric – bicycle. The debt we owe to Charlotte is incalculable and I would like to thank her (and indeed Bob while we are about it) on behalf of all the membership for keeping this ship afloat. Her father Edward was a founding member of the Federation of
British Artists. I wonder where would we all be if it weren’t for the Hallidays? While stepping aside from guiding the committee, she will remain Keeper of the Archive. Some years ago, she handed over a large amount of material to the Tate for its archive of the NEAC, but in her St John’s Wood home, the shelves of her ‘New English cupboard’ still sag under the weight of all sorts of documents: minutes, agendas, catalogues, posters and so forth… an invaluable record of meetings and exhibitions over the club’s 137-year history. Charlotte will continue, I hope, to be an intrinsic part of the NEAC proceedings – its
critics’ lunches and its communication with our members. As I write, she is still reminding me when we usually decide what. To be honest, I am not sure she will ever properly retire from looking after or ‘keeping’ us all. So let’s say it again from all of us: Thank you, Charlotte x by Peter Brown PNEAC
