The menu reflects a hand-drawn chalkboard while being permanent rather than an actual hand-drawn chalkboard. Prices are on magnets to allow for flexibility in pricing for different events.

WSU Rural Communities Design Initiative Project 2014
The south east region of Washington gained its geographical characteristics through the Missoula Floods which broke the land and rebuilt it. Among many things, these floods also carried basalt rocks into the region The town of Lacrosse Washington has been a small farming community since the late 1800’s and has more recently experienced hardships of an economic downturn. There is an ongoing effort to bring interest and prosperity back to the town.

Background Information
These rock houses were built in the 1930’s out of basalt rocks brought in by the Missoula Floods. They have since been donated to the town for renovation and use.
Autoshop
There are five buildings in all on opposite sides of the street from each other. This design proposal utilizes them as a visitors center and museum to highlight the floods and history of the region. Like the floods breaking the land, time has broken down the Lacrosse Rock Houses, and they must now be restored to be strong again.

Project Goals:
Restore historic basalt houses; show uniqueness rather than conceal it. Visually connect the buildings on both sides of the street to create presence (done through continued pavement of the crosswalk). Create a space to draw people to the area while providing a space which the community can use as well. Represent history of the town as well as the spirit of the citizens to better the town through the design.

The front of the visitor center is opened which creates an inviting feeling as well as contrast the heaviness of the rock houses; a glass curtain wall is also added to the building to bring in more light and update the building slightly.
The two permanent exhibits are visually connected across the street from each other through the pavement in the street. The houses retain their integrity and match the other buildings.
Outside the center is a waterfall which reflects back to the Missoula Floods and create interest on the grounds. The pavement carries across the street to visually connect the buildings to each other and create interest.
