By implementing a blockchain system to store patient records, the medical cannabis industry would be increasing its regulatory compliance. As a result, this will improve patient outcomes as physicians may use systems with automated compliance reporting and ledgers that securely store patient information. Blockchain can therefore offer medical cannabis companies a value-added service which enhances business efficiency and immutability, meaning that the data and metadata stored are unchangeable. Malta has the possibility of attracting new start-ups in a number of industries. What is truly needed is a concerted effort by all stakeholders to seek synergies not only within current economic industries but also between them. I am excited to see the possibilities and to see how this new technology can help the medical marijuana industry reach new levels of innovation in business, security and other areas. As medical cannabis and blockchain are currently reigning among the most popular topics in the global economy, I am truly satisfied that Malta, a tiny island in the Mediterranean, has embraced these industries and is actively looking at how these two forces can work together. Given that literally any entity may be used for illicit purposes, it is not possible to pinpoint a category or class of entities which is more susceptible to financial crime than others. This year, the Authority has published its AML and CFT Strategy which sets out how AML and CFT supervision has been fused into the conduct and prudential supervisory framework, and how the Authority intends to enhance its AML and CFT supervision. In this light, the Authority has recently set up a Financial Crime Compliance Function within the Supervision Directorate and has also engaged an international team of experts to boost resources and expertise in the area. With respect to cyber security, the MFSA is in the process of setting up a Supervisory ICT Risk and Cyber Security Function which will be housed within the Supervision Directorate. Furthermore, the Authority has, this year, published Guidance Notes to this effect. These changes and more will, in the end, lead to higher standards of regulation and supervision,

After a spell working in a couple of different industries in the late nineties, Brendan made his way back to aviation but was struck by how nothing had really changed, the same problems being faced by the airlines were still there – in fact the problems were getting more acute. IATA’s data on the sale price for an airline ticket in 2019 illustrates just how badly airlines are losing out. On average, the going rate for a ticket is $188, of which $47 (21%) is allocated to fuel, $47 to labour costs, $91 (55%) to all other costs and a final 3% to profit. The airlines take the full weight of the risk management in the aviation space; they take the full risk of the asset cost, which starts with the $200m aircraft. “There’s a lot of people making money in the aviation industry along the chain – but it’s not the airlines,” says Brendan. Brendan and David believe blockchain technology allows you to do things differently. In this industry it’s hard to for airlines to share their information as big operators have positioned themselves in the middle to be the brokers of that information and while some of them do a good job, they keep the airlines siloed and end up taking the lion’s share of the profit, which means the airline doesn’t get much at the end and has to invest further funds into administering and reconciling the transactions that go through all the applications they buy. “The airlines themselves are looking to deal directly with their customers and they’re also looking to collaborate, so if you can build a blockchain which stores all the pertinent information required to run an airline, to create an application to act as trusted

“Once that application goes onto the blockchain, it doesn’t matter who invested in it or built it, they all get their fair share back. The idea is three will get together and create an application on the blockchain which all the other airlines can rent. Instead of paying to build it again, they just use that existing application and pay a transaction fee going forward. The process can then be repeated with different groups, creating a blockchain for all. That’s how we create a community.” Aeroband doesn’t just run on any old blockchain however, through a partnership with Holochain they have avoided the limitations of a classical blockchain – such as low transaction rates. “When dealing with the aviation industry you’ve got to deal with very high transaction volumes and real time processing. Classical blockchain was not an option for us, and we didn’t have time to wait for someone to work out a way to make it catch up. “Holochain sets out not to replicate the classical blockchain but uses a distributed hashtable, so rather than having a full copy of the entire ledger on every single node, it shards and distributes the ledger across the entire network- so the network is not delayed by huge amounts of consensus or laboured by updates. We’re very happy with our choice and we believe we’ve chosen the right distributed ledger. As the network grows the efficiencies get better, the performance more robust – all the things that are important to us. “At the moment we’re running a proof of concept in house with Holochain on a controlled closed network, and we are overjoyed at the results. 50,000 transactions a second out of the box is exemplary against any yardstick you wish to measure it against. Decentralized Culture Magazine

Our aim is to create and broadcast the blockchain culture What is ÁGORA?

ÁGORA is the flagship community and magazine in Spanish where to educate and discuss in relation to the improvements and challenges that the blockchain technologies offer on decentralization, liquid democracy, education, freedom, privacy and transparency taken from a positive social impact on the commons.

The AgoraChain association is a non-for-profit organization and its main objectives are to create and broadcast the blockchain culture and paradigm along with the disruptive technologies across several media resources. It aims to establish and promote good practices between the projects derived from the use of such technologies, with special interest on blockchain.

How did it all begin? The project debuted in January 2018 with the first edition of the magazine along with the website and the Telegram groups and channels. On its first anniversary, the core team agreed to move forward and perform a full rebranding, including the name shortening from ÁgoraChain to ÁGORA, as well as propelling the partnerships and raising awareness among the Spanish speaking world population. Tell us about the ÁGORA magazine Rather than covering the news, the focus of the magazine, and hence its web blog, is placed on bringing insights and opening constructive debates around the challenges and proposals derived from these tools for financial freedom. The ÁGORA magazine is issued quarterly on digital support free for the community. Due to the growing demand, the magazine is also available on paper, both on meetups, shops and events, so as to further improve our audience reach, apart from the crypto niche.

Who is behind the project? Almost ten people are currently are highly involved in day-to-day work. All the workload of the association and the magazine is managed in an agile manner using several online tools and communication channels as we all live in different parts of Spain. On every new release we gather virtually to rejoice in good company and set up the procedures in order to keep improving. What are the future plans for ÁGORA? Latin America should have a clear and sound voice in the project. In that sense, we focus on strengthening the collaboration with their communities and learning from their huge potential. At the same time, we will keep spreading the word of blockchain between the wide Spanish-speaking community.
