Letter from Valentina I’ve been struggling with a lot of things lately, but the truth is they can all be summed up to one thing: I can’t control everything. No one can. Not me, not you. And that’s not always na easy pill to swollow. But we can’t control how other people receive our energy, we can’t control how other people see us and we can’t control how we’re perceived. Everything we do or say is getting filtered by all the things people are getting through at the time. And that’s not about us. So even though this feeling can cause a lot of anxiety and, sometimes, makes life a little bit harder to live, we have to know that there’s no use in feeling bad for things we can’t change. All we can do is keep on doing our thing, doing what we love and giving the best possible energy to everyone around us – it does comes back to us, even better than it left.

Exclusive Interview with Sepideh Kahrizi
" Simply, I love beauty and I am so interested in presenting this beauty and confidence to all the girls and women"
Sepideh, how did your career begin in the world of beauty? Since my childhood, I was always so interested in drawing and playing around with different colors. I remember I used to participate in almost all of the painting courses at the time. A year after finishing my studies at the university, I suddenly realized that I am not really interested in the field of engineering. At this time, I started to take various makeup courses with my eyes wide open and take it more seriously. Thereby, I started my practice passionately as an intern in three of the most famous salons in the city of Tehran for almost two years. After that, I started my freelance career . How would you describe your signature look and what is it about your style that sets you apart from other makeup artists? In my home country, unfortunately the fashion make-
up and art makeup are not fully known to the public. The public's interests are more inclined towards light makeup or bridal makeup. However, I am not really interested in cliches. Therefore, I tried to design my makeup in a way to attract the public opinion and demonstrate my style and the real potential of creativity. As an example, I used stones, pearls, and colored feathers. I also like to use colorful eyeliners, which are somehow exaggerated. This is how I am, trying to be different from other makeup artists in my country. Sepideh, what is the most exciting or challenging opportunity you had as a freelance artist? What's the project you are most proud of? Simply, I love beauty and I am so interested in presenting this beauty and confidence to all the girls and women. I am extremely proud about the two of my projects, in which the models had vitiligo and
alopecia conditions. After attending those projects, I was exceedingly excited and happy about their happiness, and I completely felt it with my heart. Looking back, how has make-up artistry changed or influenced you as a person? As I mentioned before, working with eyeshadows and creating beauties had a great effect truly on my spirit. Doing the makeup helped me to better understand myself and my certain interests. Moreover, it made me more precise, and helped me to start all of my days with more motivation and great creative ideas. How do you keep up with all the new trends and styles? Where do you pull your inspiration from to help you with your work? I believe that one always needs to stay updated in any field and follow social media interests. I eagerly follow the YouTube and instagram pages of successful makeup artists, and I study newly published articles in the field of makeup designs and related products. All the time,I try to keep myself updated by participating in the masterclass courses of famous makeup artists. What do you think are some of the keys to being a successful makeup artist? Developing skills and knowledge base, following educational videos of famous makeup artists, getting familiar with the newest makeup trends in the world, trying to know the recently launched makeup products, participating in update courses, having creative performance in all makeup styles. Why is shooting for camera and lights, different then everyday makeup? In the process of photography, various types of lighting and the camera's flashing, can
make the colors used in the makeup look more washed-up. Therefore, in professional photography, we have to use more shadowing and contouring with much warmer undertones. However, in daily makeup the skincare related aspects of the products are more important to notice. Why is having an MUA essential to a photographer? In my opinion, MUAs, photographers, and hairstylists each, are the sides of a triangle. Ideas and the experience of any of them, affects the performance of the other two. Working in a group has always led to a better result than working individually. Therefore,in my opinion, a photographer needs to cooperate with hairstylists and makeup artists to create a piece of art. What is the most important beauty advice that you can give to women? All the women are beautiful. The two factors which have the most effect on their beauty are: healthy skin, and beautiful smiles. So in my view, they should know their proper skincare routines, and pay special attention to their oral health. What are your future plans/goals for the next couple of years? I hope to cooperate with famous makeup brands in the upcoming years! Where can our readers keep up with your work and get connected with you? It would be my pleasure to stay in touch with all my dear friends in the art of makeup and all passionate makeup fans. My instagram account is @sepidarsis. My LinkedIn account is Sepideh Kahrizi. Anokhina Yulia Yulia, how did your career begin in the world of beauty? I have loved the world of fashion since childhood. I even wanted to be a designer. Studied at art school. Why is having an MUA essential to a photographer? What can you provide to help a photographer's images stand out? In general, I think that the work of a makeup artist for shooting is a very responsible job. It is in the hands of the make-up artist to make sure that the mood is on top for both the model and the photographer. And after shooting there was no need for detailed retouching. I am often told that retouching is almost not needed with my make-up and it is very nice to hear it. Can you tell us about a memorable moment you had while doing makeup? Probably the most memorable moment is still when I did my mom's makeup for the first time. What are your tips for maintaining a youthful appearance? This is going to sound strange from a makeup artist, but if you want to stay young, use makeup as little as possible and choose your skin care products as carefully as possible.
What has been the highlight of your career so far and what are your hopes/dreams for the future? The highlight was my first make-up master class. I definitely want to conduct a make-up master class specifically for photo shoots. I want to teach make-up artists to understand the nuances for photo shoots in the studio and photo shoots on the street. Where can our readers keep up with your work and get connected with you? You can see my work on my instagram. I am open to communication in the comments and direct.

Exclusive Interview with Happy to have you here, Amy. Tell us your story, how did you got started modeling and where is your home at the moment? Thank you for having me! I started modelling around the age of 12 scouted by a local talent agency in Edmonton, Alberta. I instantly developed a passion. I knew how hard it was growing up being bullied, from a girl in a small town to a big city. Travelling the world & having a career with the most fulfillment. At the moment, I am the Head Instructor at LaVie Medical Aesthetics Academy residing in Edmonton, Alberta. Tell us more about yourself. What else do you do next to modeling? Next to modelling, I enjoy travelling, meeting new people and always being down for an adventure. I absolutely love Medical Aesthetics so being an educator is the most rewarding part. My goal is to be a mentor for boss babes (and dudes **wink). I also looooove yoga, and would someday like to teach a class! What do you love most about being a model? What I love most about being a model is getting to express my individuality by wearing statement pieces that you wouldn’t normally find on a rack. Trendy, in style classics – my favorite couture pieces are Chanel, so classic, elegant & poise. Oh & of course, I love to travel! If you could change something in the modeling world, what would it be? If I could change anything about the modelling world, it would be the scammy male “photographers” who deceive young women with the wrong intentions. What fuels your imagination and provides you with inspiration? I modelled professionally for 4 years, and within those years I developed a strong sense of my creativity resulting in what I wear, and how I portray myself. I fuel my imagination by envisioning the woman I want to be. It’s more than a pretty face in modelling, seriously. You need to be able to have the creative passion to think “out of the box” to develop that passion that goes
Amy Hope into creating the most interesting, noticeable shot. My modelling inspirations include Bella Hadid, Kendall Jenner, & none other than Kim K herself. What keeps you excited about life in general? What keeps me excited about life is waking up and being grateful for another day, another sunrise & another opportunity. If it doesn’t work today, maybe it will tomorrow. Looking back how has modeling experience changed your personal/professional life? Have you grown more comfortable with yourself since you started? I think growing up in a small town, comes with small town minded people. Expressing my individuality wasn’t easy. My mom would drive me to and from the city, 5 hours each way to attend agency meetings, events, etc. Talk about best mom ever, right? Modelling has truthfully changed my life in so many ways, I got invited to a modelling conference in Vancouver when I was 15 and got scouted to go to Tokyo. Although, I didn’t pursue Tokyo nor the modelling industry much longer, I met my best friend Ella at the conference. I have also met wonderful contacts that have helped me grow my business successfully and although I didn’t pursue it for much longer, I gained confidence, etiquette skills, business opportunities & a lifelong friend. What kind of life would you like to have? At the end of my life, if I do am half the woman my mama is, I would call it a successful one. My perfect life would include a healthy, and happy big family who’s always on a new adventure and making lifelong memories. If I continue to challenge myself, and work hard but also have passion; I will have the life I dream of. What are the achievements you are proud of most today? Some achievements in the modelling world that I am most proud of today include being featured in multiple magazines, art galleries, runways & movies working with talented, professional role models. Where can our readers keep up with your work and get connected with you? Your readers can keep up with me and my crazy adventures on Instagram @44AmyHope.

Fashion & Mental Health HOW ARE THEY CONNECTED Mental health it’s been a topic of discussion for a while, but now that fashion is starting to enter the conversation, some implications could happen. Fashion is one of the most universal things people consume, and while it might seem superficial, fashion is a powerful way of addressing mental health issues. Lots of people put much focus fashion figures as well as their clothing, forgetting that there is some link between the fashions displayed and the health of the people. Perhaps the key question here is: does fashion changes people’s health or does the health of the people changes fashion? To begin with, plenty of people find themselves having to strictly care for their health in order to fit the fashion world. Today, many people spend lots of time in the gym in order to do so. Mostly, people intent to conform to the fashions of their choice, so they make adjustments to their health habits either by changing their diets or by engaging themselves in exercises and in extremis, even taking pills. Generally, various factors dictate how one’s body image is perceived, such as the mass media, peer groups, ethnic background as well as the family values, all of which are traceable to fashion associated with these groups. While there is no such thing as an ideal or even a perfect body, humans strive to conform to standards of body health and to deem aligned to their fashion preferences at the same time. While different standards and norms are linked to various cultures,
44
there are not particular cultures that influence health; rather these are their designate fashions that constitute the health paths adopted by individuals. In most instances, it is believed that the average model should be approximately six feet tall and has a weight of approximately 130 pounds. Most women make use of this as a standard gauge for body health. Comparing themselves to models, they attempt to shed their weight as they consider themselves overweight. This is not always the desirable health measure standard and women find themselves living unhealthy lives in order to fit this idealized meaning of health. However, it is not just the women whose health is affected by fashion. Men also have their ideals. More often than not, men want to be shaped accordingly and fit into clothing they see their stars wearing. Often disparities in health and weight cause self-esteem problems especially when people find that they do not match an ideal body size as well as shape. All these impact the overall health of people which defines the link between fashion and health, both mental and physical. It cannot be denied that fashion is a crucial element in dictating how people manage their health and what society needs to ask is: is it justifiable for one to alter his or her health in order to conform to fashion ideals? As much it is possible to alter one’s weight, and hence health to conform to fashion; when this is done in an unhealthy manner, there is a likelihood of negative repercussions. It
Fashion & Beauty | July 2022
would rather be advised to follow healthy guidelines and have the fashion conform to the individual’s physique. Unhealthy means of losing weight always have side effects and should be avoided. In conclusion, it will be important to reiterate that fashion is part and parcel of society and as such, a person planning health-related issues must put it into consideration. Society cannot continue to live in the idealized scenario where fashion conforms to the health of individuals. The truth is that people are now changing their health to conform to society. This intertwinement or rather reciprocate influence is one that must put health practitioners on notice. Awareness needs to be put in place to explain
the risks of using unhealthy means in order to fit specific idealized fashion ideas. Not everyone can fit a given fashion, and that’s fine, because fashion sense and style should be something unique that makes one feel good, not the opposite. However, the range of fashions is extensive and basically one cannot lack a fashion that conforms to their standards of health. As much as fashion affects health, experts in the area need to be at hand to advise the clients on the health repercussion of trying to conform to certain fashion standards. While there are various ways to address mental health, fashion is one powerful universal art form to do so. The world could use a little more optimism and improvements in addressing mental health, and style can be one way to get there. First off, where are you located? How long has your photography been a hobby and a profession? What prompted you to start? I live in Moscow. Photography has been a hobby of mine ever since the advent of cell phones with cameras. I took pictures on the phone and looked at the photo for a long time, all my friends and acquaintances admired my work. I left photoshop on my own when on you tube there were no Russian-language lessons yet. Then I bought my first SLR camera, lens, flash and smoothly started shooting the wedding while working as an accountant. I combined many different professions, worked seven days a week, soon burned out and took a long pause in photography for 5 years. In 2018, I started taking pictures again, with the goal of quitting accounting and becoming a professional photographer (at that time I was working at BBDO). In 2019, I gave birth to a child and was on maternity leave for three years. During this time, I went through a lot of different training, I wanted myself in different niches and now I am ready to apply all my knowledge in the profession of a photographer. I finally quit my job in accounting and am now photographing my main source of income. In your own experience, what are the biggest challenges for a freelance photographer? big problems for the most independent photographer, the availability of reliable and highly paid orders. gaining from your experience, what is the key to earning an award from a model? I really admire and find her unique in some way. I always say only sincere compliments during the shooting, the models of this open up and open up to the maximum. What do you usually look for in photo models? What is "aha" to you? For me, her self-confidence is important in a photo model, it is always visible in her movements, so I don’t look at her portfolio, but only look at the video,
how she poses, with what kind of nature she does it, how she sits in the role. My model should be slightly larger. than an actress. It is better for models to pump acting skills and self-confidence in themselves than to memorize poses. What would you recommend to use to expand your portfolio? For models who are expanding their portfolio, I would look at Aliexpress as a professional event for photographers, where we need expensive equipment (cameras, lenses) as advertising, in such places the photographer wants to test the equipment, and common places are always crowded. For especially selected models who do not lose their visits, to photographers found to share. What do you think separates a good image from an average one? How do you choose which images you provide to your children? For me, a good image is a combination of a good angle, emotion, clarity and lighting. For me, there is no problem of selecting photos, I do it easily and quickly. How, in your opinion, does the beauty of a sane age feel? What does beauty mean to you personally and what really makes a woman beautiful? For me, beauty is the acceptance of oneself of frequency and completely, without hesitation and clamps. Self-confidence makes a woman beautiful and attractive. I met a lot of beautiful girls, they were not self-confident and it ruined them. We are committed to a high level of detail in all your work. Does your creative process start with a certain image in your future imagination, or are you looking for inspiration as you go? I always have a lot of interesting ideas in my head, more often I don't implement all my ideas. I like to fill photography with some kind of plot, and not to do a photo shoot for the sake of a photo shoot. The creative process in my head always starts with a topic that worries or hurts me a lot, after I have clarified
it with the help of photography, the topic resolves itself. Therefore, I really hope that by the time this article comes out, the topic in question in this photo shoot will have already been completed. What are the technical requirements for this kind of photography and how did you overcome them? Today in Russia the main technical difficulty is the price of photographic equipment.
What was the most important moment in your career and what are your hopes/dreams for the future? At the moment, the highlights of my career as a photographer, I am provided with the Kavyar platform, being here gives me the motivation to move higher and forward. When did you first realize you wanted to pursue a career as a creative? I don’t recall a specific time, I think I just knew. I would plait my grandparents hair from a really young age and would always thrive in art classes. I started doing freelance make-up around the age of 17 and fell in love with the feeling of making others feel beautiful and getting creative. How hard has it been establishing yourself in the industry and what are some of the most significant things you've faced? I’m really lucky with the few opportunities that have come my way but establishing yourself is very hard. You have to make a lasting impression which is something I always keep in mind when meeting new people. How would you describe yourself at work in so many years of your career? I’m still very early in my career and hoping to develop further in the industry now I’ve graduated. I would describe myself as a hard worker, I’ll constantly try and make others jobs easier by helping where I can whether that be in the industry or working alongside peers through university. Who is the person you look up to the most and why? My cousin is a huge inspiration to me. She has helped me a lot in the industry and I hope one day I can have a similar influence my cousin has had on me, on others. What makes a photo-session successful? What is your goal from the beginning to the end of the shoot on set? It really depends on the job. A successful shoot day to me is a team that share equal understanding of the goal and for everyone to be highly motivated and fun to work with. It’s nice to work in a team where you’re appreciated and people understand the importance of your role What is the best piece of advice you've ever gotten and do you follow it? A few years ago I met an established makeup designer and she said no job is too small, say yes to everything whether that’s be mak-
ing teas and coffees or sorting out pin boxes as you never know where it can lead. I will continue to follow that as I try and thrive in the industry Tell me about a time you had a very stressful day at work and how you handled it? I think all artists have had experiences where cast/models have come down with coronavirus at the very last minute. That’s always a stress as the hair and makeup design is suited to that exact person, things have to change and there’s a lot of problem solving. This happened on the set of Bloodshed, after conversations with the director and producers, we overcame it as best we could. If you could say one thing to someone younger who looks up to you, what would you say? Just to work hard and have fun! Working hard always brings me such a fulfilling sense of achievement whether that be in the moment or after the jobs done, it’s definitely worth it. Tell us one thing about yourself people might find surprising After receiving my place at university I considered changing from a make-up course to a fashion design course. I took a year out and after freelancing in that year, I decided on makeup. I can’t imagine I would have lasted long in the fashion design course looking back, I’m very glad I chose makeup! What are your future plans/goals for the next couple of years? Now I’ve graduated I would love to work in Theatre, Film or TV industry. I want to concentrate on wigs and makeup, furthering my skills in both and having fun whilst doing it Where can our readers keep up with your work and connect with you? Racism goes against everything we believe here in MALVIE Whether it comes in big gestures, like bullying and name-calling, or disguised as “jokes”, racism is violent. It is always aggressive and has the only purpose to oppress people. And that is something we can no longer tolerate. As we live in a world where people are being discriminated and even murdered for their skin color and genetic features, it is our mission to try to make life a little less scary.
You are not alone! You deserve to be respected and appreciated for who you are, and nobody has the right or the power to say otherwise. We know we cannot change everything on our own, but we are doing our best to help in any way possible and to show our support in the making of a society in which everyone is safe, respected and gets every opportunity they deserve.
We know it will take time for us to make big changes with worldwide impacts, but we can try and start somewhere. That’s why we created MALVIE Noir, a special edition destined to empower people of color and make their voices heard through the art. Also, in the immediate term, we are donating proceeds to a black led organizations that fights racial injustice.

John, how did your career begin in the world of beauty? I always had an interest in the visual arts, fashion and beauty and was steered in this direction after a career change from corporate accounting. How would you describe your signature look and what is it about your style that sets you apart from other hair stylists? My signature look expresses forward fashion avant-garde . It’s not the run of the mill catalogue work. John, what is the most exciting or challenging opportunity you had as a freelance artist? What's the project you are most proud of? Most exciting opportunity was doing a celebrity recording artist and also being asked to design a look for a book cover. Looking back, how has hair artistry changed or influenced you as a person? My hair artistry has given me respect in the industry, knowledge and confidence, that I can pass on to other stylists. How do you keep up with all the new trends and styles? Where do you pull your inspiration from to help you with your work? I love street fashion , music videos and watch most of the runway collections each season. What do you think are some of the keys to being a successful hair stylist? The key to a talented stylist is to have

a keen eye on the aspect of style and to understand and know your subject. What is one hairstyle trend you enjoy right now and one trend you don't like so much? One hairstyle trend I do love is long layers with hints of hand painted contrasts. My expertise is of a master colourist. I mostly dislike faded pastels of rainbow colours with shaved sides & mullet looks. Why is having an hair stylist essential to a photographer? A hairstylist is an important key element to cementing the final look on a creative shoot. It makes it look magazine quality, which most readers aspire too. What are your 5 hair don'ts? 1 Bangs too short 2 beached hair with the incorrect toner 3 keep up do styles current the this decade 4 do age appropriate hair for the client 5 don’t experiment on a shoot day , be prepared. What are your future plans/goals for the next couple of years? To mentor a team of stylists and pass on my inherited skills forward And possibly get published a few more times. Where can our readers keep up with your work and get connected with you? My work can be seen on my IG , FB accounts or my website @ www. Langtonsalon.com

INTERVIEW WITH
Svetlana Smirnova Svetlana, can you tell us more about yourself and how you get involved in the photography business? Hello, My name is Svetlana Smirnova - abbreviated Veta, I am 31 years old, I am a photographer and have been in the photo industry quite recently. For a long time, I was more of an observer - photography is what supported and supports in difficult periods, because photography focuses on the beautiful: aesthetic, on what is very lacking when it is not rosy around. To begin, where are you based? How long has photography been a hobby and career of yours? What motivated you to get started? I am from Russia, born and raised in Moscow. I have been professionally engaged in photography for half a year - since January 2022, I started as a hobby a little earlier - about a year, then I was still shooting with an amateur camera in auto mode and did not understand the settings at all. I turned to photography during professional burnout, I have been working in the IT for the last 5 years, but my education is Culturological, before IT I worked in the fields of interior design, event decor, even in printing and publishing, because the craving for art was, one might say, always, but the need for stable earnings was paramount. In 2021, my boyfriend Dmitry Lagutov (game developer) as part of the "Four Quaters" team released the popular indie game - "Loop Hero". Thanks to him, I had the opportunity to change my occupation, shift my attention from stable earnings: see, try what is closer to me and responds more. I quit my permanent job in January 2022, at the same time Sergey Gunin (Russian photographer, Instagram @sergeygunin), whom I had been watching on Instagram for a long time, was recruiting for an "introductory course in photography" at the "White" photoschool, where I signed up, this was my start as a photographer. Sergey is a wonderful professional in his field and an excellent teacher, a person who very tenderly and carefully immerses in the world of photography, you can follow him even with your "eyes closed" - it's not scary at all. He really believes in his students, faith is undoubtedly important for any creative person, both close people (friends, family) and an authoritative teacher - now these are my main motivators in my activities.
What type of projects are dearest to your heart? Why? Now my every project is dear to me, every shooting is something new for me: new experiences, new people, new ideas, new mistakes and achievements. This is what is shaping me as a photographer right now. What services do you provide and what does your "team" consist of? I provide services for individual photography, both professional models and people far from the photo industry. The team so far consists of me and makeup artist Maria Lagutova (instagram @ maria_lagutova), she often happens in the role of a model, always helps with various creative projects. Also, thanks to training at the "White" photoschool, contacts with modeling agencies have appeared (modeling agency aquarelle-models. com ), where the model Alla Yuminova (instagram @yumi_all), who took part in the project "Commedia dell'arte". I hope that soon we will implement more than one project together. What would be some tips you would give to a beginning photographer? First of all - to shoot, to practice a lot. For example, when I don't have filming and projects, I shoot flowers or other objects available in everyday life at home, it helps me learn to feel light and color, it's easier to experiment with objects than with people, at least they won't tell you that this angle, light or concept doesn't suit them. To read fiction, to study history and various types of art - to develop imagination. Develop technical skills of working with software, photographic equipment, lighting equipment. Develop your viewing experience - watch beautiful and interesting movies, TV series, theatrical productions, look for photographers whose work resonates with you. In general, it is very important to find exactly what resonates in you. Be less afraid to make a mistake, believe me, if you have found something that resonates with you, undoubtedly, in the future there will be
an audience and like-minded people who will respond to your creativity. Be patient - at first you need to invest a lot in your development, but I'm sure it's worth it. Is there something you always ask yourself/think just before you press the shutter button? And...what is going through your mind when you're behind the camera? I always ask myself before making a shot - "is the model comfortable now, in this frame?", probably, one of my biggest fears in filming that the model will not look natural, as in bad TV shows, when you see that a person is overplaying or looks out of place, as if he was taken and "pasted" into this role from somewhere else. Then there are already questions about the light: "how does it fall? does it fit the model? does it help to display the concept of shooting or vice versa?", but already looking at the result of the picture. When I take pictures, the only thing that happens in my head is the exclamation "God! How beautiful!". What is typically in your camera bag and what is your favorite photography accessory, other than your camera? In addition to the camera, you definitely need a spare memory card and battery, while incidents in this sense have not happened to me on the set, but you need to be prepared that something will need to be replaced. I also always take a music speaker with me and try to collect playlists for each project, music always helps to convey the right mood to all participants of the shooting. Do you plan each photo out or are they created more spontaneously? I do not plan every photo, as I have already said, it is very important to me in shooting that the model "lives in the frame" - feels natural, I can tell/show by poses what I would like to convey in a particular frame, use certain accessories suitable to the concept, but most of the successful shots I have are more spontaneous. You see that it's beautiful in the moment - the task is to catch and capture it.
Do you prefer working on location or in the studio? What's your favorite light source, and why do you choose it? I have more shooting skills in the studio than in nature, not because the studio is better, but nature is worse (I really love nature: flowers, fields, greenery, ponds, etc.), but because there is no bad weather in the studio - in Moscow, we can say, only 2-3 months a year is not cold/it's rainy/gray/dark (and I've been doing photography for half a year). In the studio, I am more confident that I will get the desired result, with natural locations - not always, but this does not mean that I shoot only in studios, I am interested in both here and there. It's just that I have less experience with natural locations that I need to get. As for the light sources, I also can't single out my favorite - in the beginning I had more experience working with pulsed studio light, I'm slowly getting now with natural - the sun: in the studio, on the street, at home; with permanent - colored lamps: at home, in the studio, on the street from advertising signs and traffic lights. It is ideal for me to come to the choice of a light source based on the idea of shooting, which light fits more to the concept. What has been the highlight of your career so far and what are your hopes/ dreams for the future? Because now I'm at the beginning of the journey, everything in this area is bright for me: right now one of our (me and a team of like-minded people who were close to the idea) filming is being published in a magazine in another country, I'm writing my first photographic interview. Isn't it amazing? It all seems incredible. My dreams and immediate plans are to do larger-scale projects, gather like-minded people who will be close to my creativity and, of course, continue to study, gain the missing skills. From hopes: the main thing is not to lose interest and form your vision, the secondary thing is to get a stable income in the photo industry. Where can our readers keep up with your work and get connected with you? My instagram - @vetka_photo, website - vetasmirnova.com

Carmen Armijo EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH
Could you tell us a bit about yourself and how did you get into the photography world? My name is Carmen Armijo, I’m 26 years old, I’m an architect and a photographer. Since I was a little girl, I was always unconsciously involved with the world of art, but ever since I had my first cellphone with a camera, I was addicted to taking pictures of anything, but I always saw it as a hobby and nothing more. One day I decided to learn how to use a camera professionally, and since then started a new adventure full of learning until I discovered that portraits could be a way of expressing myself and I knew I had found my place. You have a very unique style. How would you describe your photography to someone who has never seen it? Artistic, emotional, versatile. I try to approach photography in a way I can send a message or tell a story, highlighting the model’s beauty through a delicate and thorough process. In your experience, what are the most difficult aspects of professional photography? I think one of the most difficult things would be finding a style you really identify with. Finding the essence we want to put into our work without falling into monotony or losing sense or emotion. It is a long path but it is a path of leaning and personal growth. What's going through your mind when you are on set behind the camera? I’m always thinking if I am sending a message, if the main idea has been captured during the session. It’s good to mention that every single detail is important for the final result to be memorable, so that’s why my mind is racing thinking of a million things when I’m behind my lens. How do you use social media in conjunction with your business? What role does it play in your job? As of right now I don’t have an official web page to show my work, for that reason I rely on social media, specially Instagram, to work as my portfolio and way of direct communication with customers and allies. I like direct contact with people, as it lets me understand what it is that my customers want to express or the model’s best essence. That is way social media has been of great help, allowing me to build a solid relation with my customers. What advice would you give to someone looking at a career in photography? Perseverance is key. You could have the best camera, space of work, models and makeup artists but you need to work on what defines your art, build your own style and rhythm, learn what details will
help and little by little you’ll reach success. Learn to be yourself through photography. What does it take to achieve a unity of the artistic and the commercial aspect of fashion photography? In fashion photography there’s 3 key elements to approach during a session. 1: producing and impactful image. 2: making that image memorable. 3: sending a message of encouragement to buy. That is why I consider fashion photography to be more than capturing a piece of clothing; it is creating a harmonic and whole conjunction of every element in a picture. The main idea is that everything works together to send the message the designer wants to express and let the consumer feel identified. Carmen, tell us a secret, what is the key to getting the best out of someone for fashion and beauty shots? That moment when you understand how to capture the essence of what you’re portraying is when you know you’re doing a successful work. You need to study the model that’s in front of your lens (be it a person or a piece of clothing). You need to know its origin, history, mission and goal… and capture all that in a take. Do you look to other photographers for inspiration, or does your inspiration come from other sources? Generally, I draw inspiration from ideas that are born in my head. Normally, it’s a small wandering idea and I start working on it, molding it until I find the message I want to express. What has been the highlight of your career so far and what are your hopes/dreams for the future? I think there’s still a long path to walk in this world, but I’m grateful for every single opportunity I’ve got thanks to my work, from telling my story in a stage to showing my work in prestigious magazines as this one. I dream of working with big brands that can send an impactful message. I also hope to work with more hair and make-up artists to keep creating stories through photography. Where can our readers keep up with your work and get connected with you? My way of connecting with the world as of right now would be my Instagram account: carmi.ph where I’m constantly sharing my processes, work, thoughts, advices and stuff about myself.
