free Local fun for the Bayside mum 1
fun times Welcome back Bayside mamas. I hope you are all surviving this chilly winter! August at mamamag has been a blast. I have drunk countless skinny lattes with many more wonderful mums and locals. I’ve had a fabulous trip to the snow with the kidlets, my lovely man, and seven other gorgeous families. Lots of fun, food and drinks. There may or may not have been midnight tobogganing involved! As September rolls in it’s time to say thanks to the other special parent in our children’s lives. This year will be the first time in years I have actually got to see my Dad on Father’s Day. He lives up in Canberra but coincidentally is in Melbourne at the time this year for an art course (creativity runs in my family!). So this month I have decided to dedicate mamamag to the Dads. And by that I mean putting a Dad on the cover and bringing you an article about the importance of Dads having a special part in their daughter’s lives. The rest is still for the mamas! No but seriously, Dads are a very important part of our little girl’s lives and some men forget to nurture that relationship. Dads naturally bond with boys. They do the sport thing, they have more in common, but it’s nice to take the time out and think of new ideas to keep that bond equally special with the girls. This month we feature Dörte Horn, our first ‘Mama of the month’ (page 20) and the first of many I hope. There are so many amazing mums who have started a new businesses or adventures since having kids and I plan to bring you their stories every month. Dörte is a Bayside mum of two who has recently written her first children’s novel ‘Sleep tight, Digger Dan!’ which is absolutely beautiful and on high rotation at bed time in my house! For the chance to win her gorgeous book enter the colouring comp (page 43)! Of course we also have lots of lovely local businesses bringing you many more fabulous stories and articles and of course we have included all the local goodies like our park and street review and and some more fabulous recipes from some great local foodies. September will be a busy time for mamamag. We are incredibly proud to announce that we are starting a second magazine for City of Port Phillip mums, launching in October. Why should Bayside mums have all the fun! So if you’ve got friends down that way, tell them to look out for their local mamamag from October 1st. And wish us luck! X /localmamamag

daddy daughter day As the first man present in a young girl’s life, fathers have a special responsibility to model respect, openness and appreciation toward their daughters. By letting your little girl know she’s valued and loved, a father can establish a positive precedent for her subsequent male relationships, and one of the best ways to do that is by spending time with her. This is especially true as she enters adolescence, which can be a challenging time. Having special father-daughter activities can bridge communication gaps and build more meaningful bonds. Here are a few of our favourite ideas:
Cook together
Picture this
Whether it’s whipping up a batch of cookies or creating a four-course meal, spending time in the kitchen with your daughter is an easy way to have fun together. For younger girls, keep it simple with brownies from a packet mix. Older daughters might prefer to attempt something more sophisticated, like baking a cake from scratch or you can teach her a few of your grilling tricks. Working out a menu together and shopping at the supermarket can reinforce life skills of teamwork and financial responsibility!
Instead of simply telling your daughter that she’s cherished and loved, why not show her?
If you are not handy in the kitchen, this may be a good opportunity for your daughter to turn the tables and teach you a thing or two. Finally, enjoying the delicious fruits of your labor will make for a sweet memory.
Get rolling For more indoor or outdoor fun, take your daughter skating. Whether you snap on in-line skates and take to the bayside beach tracks or hit the ice at Olympic Ice Rink in Oakleigh or the Medibank Icehouse, girls of all ages enjoy the challenge of skating. Mastering skating can also teach your daughter about the importance and fun of learning new skills. Younger kids tend to start by tentatively skating around the edge of the rink, but over time will learn to overcome their fear of falling and will be whizzing around with ease. If you skate outdoors, you can also teach your daughter the importance of safety by making sure she wears proper protective gear, including a helmet, wrist guards and elbow and knee pads before hitting the pavement.
4
If you have a camera, take turns photographing things around the house and outdoors. You could even make a day of it, drive around town and take pictures of special landmarks or her favourite places. Daughters who like to draw or paint may prefer creating their own pictures. After you’re done taking pictures or sketching, make an album or a handmade book for her to keep in her room.
Makeover madness For girly girls, the world may revolve around makeup, nail polish and anything pink. You might think that related activities are reserved for mothers and daughters only, but dads can also get in on the action. This will show your little girl that you don’t take yourself too seriously and that you’ll always make an effort to share in her interests. Turn the bathroom into a spa for a day. Stop by the local chemist, pick up her favourite colour of nail polish and paint her fingernails and toenails. Hey, even let her paint yours! Surely you can handle pink nail polish for just a few hours! Maybe mash up a couple of avocados for a homemade face mask and slice a cucumber to place on your eyelids. You could even find recipes online for homemade cosmetics. Then, if you’re game, allow your daughter to give you a makeover. Nothing’s funnier than seeing Dad wearing blue eye shadow and lipstick.
Camp out Camping out with your little girl is a great chance to teach her some practical skills and spend quality time together. Melbourne has plenty of great caravan parks with tent sites, and all the amenities you might still want at hand. During the day you can show your daughter how to build a fire or use a compass. At night, toast some marshmallows and see who can come up with the scariest ghost story. If you have a younger daughter who isn’t interested in roughing it, backyard campouts can be fun as well. Set up a tent and sleeping bags, but instead of a campfire, opt for flashlights or glowsticks.
Daddy date A daddy-daughter date doesn’t have to entail specific activities, like dinner and a movie. It’s more about emphasising a special time for you and your daughter exclusively. Make it a monthly event and something she can look forward to. If you have more than one daughter they could take it in turns each month so they get some special one-on-one dad time. Depending on what you plan, let her dress up any way she wishes. She may want to put on her best dress or wear a mish-mash of clothing and accessories. Maybe bring her a bouquet of flowers if she’s older or lollies if she’s younger just to make her feel special. Dates don’t have to be elaborate or expensive. When it comes to spending time with your daughter, it’s truly the thought that counts. A pre-teen might enjoy going to a bookstore cafe and reading magazines. Trips to the zoo, library, museum, Scienceworks, even a new local park could also work. Even making her favourite meal and renting a movie to watch at home can fit the bill. For an adventurous child, check out Clip ‘N Climb in Richmond or Xtreme Air for some extreme trampolining fun. Whatever you decide to do with your daughter, enjoy the time you spend together. The two of you will be making memories that you’ll both treasure for the rest of your lives. And she wont stay little forever.

Kick start your summer body Spring has sprung and we are now heading full steam ahead into summer. How are you feeling? Healthy, vital and comfortable in your own skin? Or do you need to make some changes? Here are my top tips that I have learned from the experts that will help you kick-start your diet and lifestyle so you feel and look fabulous for summer.
Ramp up your vegetables and eat adequate fruits. We all have heard the importance of eating five serves of vegetables and two serves of fruit a day to keep us healthy, but did you know that five servings of vegetables is actually the bare minimum we should be aiming for? Often we aren’t even achieving this every day. A great way to feel better pretty quickly is to load up on more vegetables. Sounds difficult? Well, there are many creative and fun ways to do this. For example drinking your greens (green smoothies) is a tasty and quick way to cram a truckload of nutrients in. There are many websites with great recipes for tasty veggie and green smoothies that you can make at home or else many cafes and shops now sell them.
8
Water Water Water The benefits of drinking adequate daily water are numerous. For example, hydration allows the body to flush out toxins and waste, keeps skin looking young, decreases fatigue, helps you burn fat, regulates your appetite and assists blood to carry oxygen to your cells. However, drinking water does not come naturally to everyone. If you find drinking adequate water is a challenge, then start with baby steps. Aim to increase your water count by just one glass per day. An easy time to remember to have a glass of water is first thing when you wake up in the morning or the last thing at night before you go to bed. Start creating this habit over a week or two, then build up by adding another glass at a set time each day and get into a routine. Keep building up over weeks until you are comfortably drinking 2-3 litres per day.
Alcohol Alcohol is something that many people enjoy (myself included!) If you can cut back on the quantity or frequency of indulging then your body will thank you for it. Alcohol is calorie dense and often mixed with other liquids that are high in sugar. Vodka and soda or red wine are better options when you do drink, due to their lower comparative calories. Alcohol is also processed through your liver, so when you are drinking alcohol, your liver has to stop all of its important bodily processes (such as detoxing), so that it can process the alcohol.
Rest Supplementation Unfortunately, in this day and age, we can no longer assume we are getting adequate nutrition from the fruits and vegetables we eat. The topsoil in which our produce is grown is deficient in nutrients due to modern farming methods and our produce is suffering as a result. Supplements can help fill in our nutritional gaps and help our bodies to thrive.
Rest is so important, but with our lives being so busy we have to ensure we are getting enough. It’s during times of rest that our body heals and hormones that affect our appetite and weight loss are regulated. Eight hours of sleep a night is a great aim.
Slip ups Cleansing When you first wake up in the morning, having a cup of hot water with fresh lemon juice can be a great way to get your digestive system going as well as creating alkalinity in your body. If you feel like you need a more thorough cleanse, then you might like to try nutritional cellular cleansing – which I personally love. A nutritional cellular cleanse assists the body to gently get rid of toxins and then floods your cells with incredible nutrients. This type of cleanse is great for people who want to lose excess weight, gain more energy, improve sleep, mental clarity and increase lean muscle, fitness and performance. For details please send me an email.
Just remember that we are all humans, and that even the most strong willed of us are going to have times when we slip up and eat foods that we know aren’t serving us or don’t get out and exercise or rest when had planned to. Please realise that this is all part of the journey. Don’t feel guilty or be harsh on yourself. In fact, the 80/20 rule is a great one to follow. Eat healthy nutritious foods 80 percent of the time and then relax your regime the remaining 20 percent. After a slip up, just start afresh the next meal/ day and work step by step towards your goals. For more information please email lucy@thewellgrowco.com.au
Move Your Body Our bodies thrive with optimal nutrition, but this goes hand in hand with exercise. We humans are built to move our bodies, yet we are often sedentary. There are many exercise options, so it is important to find a form of exercise, activity or sport that you enjoy. Exercising or playing sports with friends helps to keep you motivated too.

Babycino BATTLE Australia is experiencing a massive inflation. Don’t try and convince me otherwise. I know. And do you want to know how I know? Well, have you checked out Babycino prices lately? Have you? The first Babycino we ever bought was in 2010. At Christmas time. Well, I admit, it was not at a fancy high tea place in the city. It was at a car wash with a café attached. Some nice overseas students were trying to get rid of a year’s worth of dried in biscuits from the back seat of my Volvo while finding other surprises along the way. It simply took a bit longer so I thought it was a good idea to initiate my son to the Melbourne coffee culture. In hindsight I wish it had been at the Langham because reading now that he had his first coffee at a car wash doesn’t really make him much of Melbournian. Oh well – too late for that now. My point is, the Babycino there was $0.30. THIRTY CENTS. Yes – I agree, a bit on the cheap side, but I also had a small latte (which was still amazing if you compare it to any coffee outlet anywhere outside of Australia!). Ever since that day at the car wash, my son had been asking for Babycinos which I would buy him happily, after all it’s only a bit of frothed milk with no additives, sugars or any other nasties that will rot his teeth to the core. So he could have them. I usually even managed to get rid of the marshmallow before the Babycino arrived, which is a very mean thing to do, I know. But I really like marshmallows, whereas I reckon he didn’t need to start liking them. Well, at age 4.5 he has now started to ask for milkshakes instead anyway, so that opens a whole new chapter of sugary drinks for him. The years have been ticking by, we had a second baby and Babycinos are again back in fashion for us. You can imagine my surprise when the other day a café (and I won’t name or shame it here because I am polite!) charged a whopping $2.50 for a bit of frothed milk and some cocoa powder! I mean, come on! It’s milk! And last time I checked I bought 2L of milk for $2. So really? Can you really try and tell me that your gourmet frother has gourmetified (Is that even a word?) this 50ml of milk that you are trying to sell me for my screaming child? Or is it because you know that you can. Because by the time I have actually made it from the car to your café, my head is near explosion from the constant “Mum, Mum, Mum” and I will buy and pay whatever it takes to shut that beautiful offspring of mine up with a special treat (which is still good old MILK, for crying out loud!). Café owners of Melbourne – please read this: We are mothers. We live on caffeine. We also raise your future customers. Café- aficionados, Coffee-addicts – whatever you like to call them. If you don’t support us now, we can’t promise you that we won’t teach our children to value having a soda at a local servo… or a car wash! Would you really want that?

MAMA of the month The journey of creating mamamag has allowed me to meet so many amazing local mums who have managed to start their own businesses or start something new and exciting whilst juggling their other full time job, motherhood! It is both inspiring and fun to find out about each of their journeys and so we have decided to bring you a new ‘mama of the month’ every month! Perhaps their story might inspire you to take the leap into something new too! This month I met with Dörte Horn, a local Bayside mum of two, originally from Germany, who has recently published her very first children’s book called “Sleep tight, Digger Dan!” In one paragraph, tell us a little bit about yourself: I am a Bayside mum of two fun kids, Oskar (4.5) and Mathilda (1). I like to keep myself busy, which can be anything: a creative project at home or a quick kitesurf session with friends. Thank goodness my beautiful husband supports (most of) my crazy ideas. Many people dream of writing a children’s book. Has a book been on your ‘to do’ list for a while? Never! It was just a story that I use to tell my son when he was little and Philipp Stampe, a friend of mine who is a brilliant art director, happened to hear about it and said that he had always wanted to illustrate a children’s book. It took two more years until we had a published book in our hands!! Did you have a background in this area before motherhood? I am a journalist by trade and I used to work in the book industry, so I knew the ‘ins and outs’ of publishing but it was still a very steep learning curve. Where did the idea of ‘Digger Dan’ come from? My son’s first word was “Bagger” which is German for “digger”. He was obsessed with anything on a construction site. He was also a terrible sleeper, so we made up a story every night telling him that every vehicle was going to bed, hoping that he would fall asleep too! We were desperate! What is the most rewarding thing about publishing your first book? Definitely seeing other kids enjoying the book. The feedback I am getting is overwhelmingly good from both bookshops and story time sessions. Even if it hadn’t been received so well, I can still say to my kids “This one was for you guys (so now go and tidy up your room)!” What is your funniest parenting story so far? Oh it must be the fact that Oskar was saying “Bagger” (the German word for digger) as one of his first words, which sounds just like “bugger” in English. So I constantly had to explain myself “We speak German at home. He isn’t actually swearing!”… What does an average day look like for you? Our day starts at 5.38am because that’s when Oskar wakes up. I am not kidding – it is 5.38am every morning! Mathilda sleeps a bit longer and thankfully most mornings my husband is on breakfast duty for the kids. If we have kindy, it’s a mad rush to get Oskar there as I am terribly unorganised in the mornings. During the day I try to do some PR-work for the book, visit bookshops, do some story times or just potter along with Mathilda until it’s time to pick up the big boy again. I know it sounds like a cruisy kind of day but trying to get anything done with a 1-year old hanging off your leg is a nightmare!

Are you planning any more books? I don’t know! It really depends on Philipp Stampe, the illustrator. Sleep tight, Digger Dan! is as good as it is because his illustrations are just so gorgeous. I will have to sit down with him next time I am in Germany and see if we have another book in us. Where can we find you? Everywhere! Of course we are on Facebook, because you basically don’t exist if you are not on Facebook, right? We have some fun promotions and give-aways on our Facebook page. I also love to be invited to a kindergarten or playgroups for a special story time. Just drop me an email dorte@newblackpress.com More importantly, where can we find the book in Bayside? We are in bookshops around Bayside like Ulysses in Sandringham, Kidna Books in Hampton, Beaumaris Books and even if other bookshops don’t stock us yet, they can always order in a copy for you. And you can get a copy directly from www.sleeptightdiggerdan.com.au! We ship nation-wide.
Check out the gorgeous Digger Dan colouring in competition on page 43 for your chance to WIN 1 of 2 copies of Sleep tight, Digger Dan!

Parklife
Our park of the month is AT black Rock foreshore Opposite the roundabout at Bluff, Balcombe and Beach Roads. After a recent refurbishment this fantastic park with gated fencing from busy Beach Road ticks almost every box. Natural landscaping, tables with benches, bike racks, bbq facilities and a view to die for, all that’s missing is a toilet block. The hero of this park would have to be the amazing pirate ship with all the goodies you could want. Climbing nets, the slippery slide, a wheel for steering the ship and a tricky netted spot to walk the plank. Toddlers will enjoy exploring the space underneath the pirate ship which has lots of hidey holes and doorways. Within spying distance (through the telescope of course) is a dolphin and shark covered see-saw.
There are swings for both littlies and older kids including a large birds nest swing. There is also an enormous net pyramid which provides endless climbing fun. Lots of natural materials have been used to create other interesting features such as balance beams and a forest of poles, encouraging creative and imaginary play. We rugged up and visited during a gorgeous Winter sunset. It’s the perfect spot to enjoy the view over Black Rock beach. Once the kids have had enough of the playground, you can walk, scoot or cycle along the coastal path or check out some of the interesting shops and cafes in Black Rock Village.

Pilates - a must for a new life! Pilates is a unique form of exercise in that it caters for all abilities, ages and stages of life. Pilates does not discriminate and allows anyone of any capability to participate and benefit. At Pilates on 88 Bay we follow the philosophy of Joseph Pilates which advocates physical fitness will empower you to bring about positive change in the way you move, function, feel and perform.
Expecting mums need to do Pilates Pilates is one of the safest and most effective forms of exercise you can do while you’re pregnant. The benefits are enormous for you and your developing baby. Pre and Post-natal Pilates exercises are specifically designed, to: • improve your posture, • tighten your tummy muscles, • strengthen your pelvic floor, • relieve back ache, • challenge your balance, • tone your arms, legs and butt, • keep your cortisol (stress hormones) levels in check, • help reduce water retention, • decrease labour times, • contribute to a faster recovery after your baby is born • and give you the confidence to enjoy your body. New Mums must add Pilates to their recovery. Post-natal Pilates provides a gentle way to reconnect with your body after childbirth and help to get your pre pregnancy body back. Our classes are tailored to each clients individual needs as we recognise every pregnancy and recovery is unique to each person. In addition to strengthening and toning, Pilates will give you an understanding about how your body works, how to build strength and how to take care of your post pregnancy body. A well structured Pilates regime will improve your posture and core, and condition your muscles to help prevent backache and improve
support for the pelvis, lumbar & thoracic spine, shoulders, arms and legs. Specifically designed Pilates exercises will see the return of your pre-pregnancy body. Pilates for teenagers Ever thought your teenager should have better posture? You are not alone, over 80% of teenagers have some form of postural deficiency. With the increased use of phones, tablets, laptops etc teenagers are increasingly compromising their posture and their health. When you add in sports, heavy schoolbags and prolonged sitting there is no doubt this is becoming an endemic problem for all teenagers. Teenagers need to know how their body works, why it is vitally important to have good posture and ways to maintain good posture. The teenagers that develop an understanding about their body from a young age can really make a change in their posture, health & well being, sports and injury prevention. Barre Attack Barre Attack is a safe, dynamic fusion of Pilates, ballet and fitness. It’s an all body workout using the ballet Barre, focusing on the legs, butt, thighs and arms! It improves your cardio fitness and rhythm! As new mums regain their strength and recover from the birth of their child, Barre Attack is definitely a safe way to improve or re-gain their cardio fitness. Pilates is unquestionably a life long way to exercise. From teenagers to seniors it is without a doubt that Pilates will only benefit and improve the quality of life for all those who participate.

do you have a bed wetter? By Kate Madigan, Feet and Hands Reflexology
How common is bed wetting in children?
What are the common factors in bed wetting?
The clinical name for bedwetting is Enuresis and it is one of the most common non-medical conditions in early childhood. It is a frustrating problem for parents with all those extra sheets to wash and a worrying problem for children when they cannot have a sleepover at their friends’ houses because they may be teased.
Two out of three young bed wetters are male. As the child grows older the proportion of males and females with the problem usually evens up.
It is a problem that a child cannot prevent because the problem is not within their ability to control. Statistics show that at age four 25% of children are wetting their bed several nights a week. At five years of age 15% still wet their bed, at age eight years 8%, at age fourteen 4% and eighteen plus, 2%. Some children are dry for a few months and then the problem starts again. As these statistics demonstrate, bedwetting is not abnormal for young children. It is not a medical or physical problem, it is not their fault and they should not be punished for what they cannot control. So what is the problem? Some children take longer than others to adjust the nervous system connection between the brain and the bladder. For some children the brain just fails to interpret and act on the signal from the filled bladder. In a non-bedwetting child the brain gets the signal from the bladder, interprets that the child is asleep and switches off the muscle sphincter in the bladder until the child wakes up. In some children for a variety of reasons this just fails to happen.
There is usually a genetic basis to the problem and it quite clearly runs in families so if the mother, father or grandparents suffered from a delay in remaining dry at night it is more likely that the child will also. Bedwetting rarely has a medical or psychological basis and 98% of children will outgrow it.
Treatments There are a variety of methods to rectify the problem. However, most of the treatments only work while the method is used continually; e.g. Wake the child late at night, get a bed wetting alarm, ask the doctor for a prescription for medication, etc. One of the most effective treatments for bed wetters is Reflexology, an ancient therapy that is based on the scientific principle that there are pressure points found in the feet and hands which correspond to all of the glands, muscles, organs nerves etc. in the body. Reflexology therapy addresses the brain bladder connection, strengthens the bladder and assists with the nervous system while reducing the tension in the child. The number of treatments required may vary. Sometimes two or three treatments are sufficient, but more commonly a minimum of twice a week treatments for four or more weeks are required. What a relief for those frustrated parents who can now take their stress free children off to a sleepover with their friends and no more dramas with the school camp.

HEALTHYMAMA
Each month we bring you a different health, fitness & nutrition tip.
Those two words we hate... pelvic floor! Having strong pelvic floor muscles gives us control over the bladder and bowel. Weakened pelvic floor muscles mean the internal organs are not fully supported and you may have difficulty controlling the release of urine, faeces or passing gas. Childbirth is a common cause of a weakened pelvic floor and pelvic floor exercises are designed to improve muscle tone and prevent the need for corrective surgery. What are pelvic floor muscles?
How to exercise your pelvic floor muscles
Pelvic floor muscles are the layer of muscles that support the pelvic organs and span the bottom of the pelvis. The pelvic organs are the bladder, bowel and uterus in women.
Every pelvic floor muscle squeeze needs to be done as strong as possible as it is the ONLY way the muscle can be strengthened and your condition can improve.
The pelvic floor muscles stretch like a muscular trampoline from the tailbone (coccyx) to the pubic bone (front to back) and from one sitting bone to the other sitting bone (side to side). These muscles are normally firm and thick.
• First of all sit, stand or lie down with your legs slightly apart and the muscles in your thighs, buttocks and abdomen relaxed.
Although the pelvic floor is hidden from view, it can be consciously controlled and therefore trained, much like our arm or abdominal muscles. The pelvic floor muscles in women provide support for the baby during pregnancy and assist in the birthing process. They work with the abdominal and back muscles to stabilise and support the spine. Why should you exercise your pelvic floor muscles? • Women with stress incontinence, who leak urine when sneezing, coughing or exercising, can usually regain control of their bladder by doing pelvic floor exercises.
• Tighten the ring of muscle around your front and back passages drawing the muscles up inside. • Try to complete up to 10 slow squeezes and up to 10 fast squeezes. • Do this whole exercise routine at least 4-5 times a day. • Try doing your pelvic floor exercises when watching television, reading a book, or while sitting in the car in traffic. Note: While doing your exercises: Do not hold your breath. Do not push down instead of squeezing and lifting up. Do not tighten your stomach, bottom or thigh muscles. Do not go overboard on your first attempt, instead gradually increase your exercises.
• Pregnant women should do pelvic exercises to help their body cope with the growing weight of their baby. If your pelvic floor is strong and healthy prior to giving birth, your muscle tone will return to normal faster after delivery. • Mothers should exercise their pelvic floors so there’s less risk of muscles already weakened by pregnancy and birth being strained further when picking up growing children. • Women of all ages can enjoy a more satisfying sex life by doing exercises because a strong and healthy pelvic floor can heighten your sexual responsiveness. HealthyMama is brought to you monthly by Carolyn Smith from Inspired Fitness Solutions. www.inspiredfitnesssolutions.com 33
IVF and Acupuncture A combination gathering momentum Considering IVF, or know someone who is? Research has shown that acupuncture can increase the chances of a successful pregnancy by 40 to 60 per cent. While acupuncture and herbs have been used to treat women’s health for centuries, techniques and new treatment principles have been developed specifically to work alongside IVF and other forms of assisted reproduction. Acupuncture is a form of medicine that uses very fine needles to stimulate specific points on the body. These points are used to regulate and maintain free flow within the body, and to nourish and restore function of the organs.
Using acupuncture to support an IVF cycle Pre treatment: Although starting treatment at any stage has proven beneficial, studies have found that treatment one to two months prior to the IVF procedure increases chances of a successful pregnancy. During these early sessions, acupuncture is used to: • Improve ovarian function to allow for better quality eggs • Strengthen the immune system • Reduce stress and support hormone balance • Regulate the menstrual cycle • Address any concerns specific to the patient During the IVF cycle: Once the IVF cycle begins, there are a few phases of the cycle when an acupuncture treatment is most valuable.
Recent studies suggest the most crucial treatments are those on the day of the transfer. Two acupuncture treatments are recommended: A pre-transfer treatment will: • Decrease stress • Make the body more receptive to the embryo Post-transfer, acupuncture: • Decreases stress • Encourages blood flow to the uterus • Supports implantation
It’s not just for the ladies Acupuncture has been shown to improve sperm movement (motility) and shape (morphology), two parameters important for conception. Just as beginning treatment prior to the IVF cycle is important for women, early treatment is helpful for men. We also suggest a treatment within 24 hours of sperm retrieval, to encourage motility.
What to expect in a treatment Expect an initial session to last up to an hour, as a practitioner will do a comprehensive consult to gather a full health and fertility history, before beginning a treatment tailored to the individual. Acupuncture needles will be inserted into the muscles in various locations on the body and retained for anywhere from 15 – 40 minutes. In many cases, Chinese herbs, supplements or lifestyle advice will be recommended to support the treatment and ultimately promote the chances of a successful conception.
During the stimulation phase, acupuncture has been shown to: • Support stimulation in order to produce more follicles • Support egg quality • Prepare the body for the transfer • Decrease any side effects of simulation medications (Data taken from the American Society for Reproductive Medicine’s official journal – “Fertility and Sterility”. Please see www.theacupuncturecompany.com.au for full reference list).

7 mistakes to avoid Head over heart is a major dilemma when it comes to house hunting. Buying a new family home can be a very emotional process but it is also important to keep those emotions in check to make the most rational decision possible. Bayside mortgage broker, Michele Mansfield of EquityVision, has a wealth of personal and professional experience when it comes to house hunting. As a busy mum, Michele understands most of us are time poor and when it comes to major decisions, having free, expert advice on hand is the way forward. Michele has devised a list of the most common emotional traps we fall into when buying a home:
1. You know you can’t afford it, but you’ll just go and have a look. You know when you walk into an open for inspection house and you get ‘that feeling’. The home has got everything you want, the built in coffee machine for you, the wine cellar for him, playroom for the kids plus a fully decked out home theatre room – complete with popcorn making machine...but before you even got there, you knew it was out of your price range and you could never afford it. Now you’re just disappointed. To avoid feeling like this, only look at homes in your price range.
36 36
2. Thinking that this house is the only one for you There are 6390 dwellings in Brighton East alone (2011 Census) let alone the 6903 in Hampton or 6089 in Bentleigh, so it’s highly unlikely that the house you’ve just seen is the only one you’ll ever find that will make you and your family happy. So if you are thinking of overlooking some major flaws in ‘the’ house, remember all of the other potential out there and walk away.
3. Being so anxious about never finding ‘the one’ that you buy a home that doesn’t suit you When you’ve been looking for a while and nothing is coming up that you really want, or you are bidding at auctions, but walking away as an under-bidder all the time, it’s easy to start thinking that you’ll never find the right home. If you compromise and move into the wrong house in a moment of desperation, you’ll end up hating where you live. Buying and selling again will be very expensive, let alone the hassles of moving.
4. Ignoring defects in the structure, appearance or location of the house. See mistakes 2 and 3 – don’t ignore major flaws, problems that will be impossible to change or significantly expensive issues to fix in the house you are considering buying. Don’t forget that new properties are coming on the market every day.
when buying a home 5. Thinking you’re a handyman when you’re not We’re all busy, so don’t underestimate the time, money, expertise and energy you will need if you take on a fixer-upper. How many times have you heard your friends complaining about budgets being blown out on renovations or repair jobs and tradesmen who never turn up when they say they will? And if it’s a major renovation, you may not be able to live there for an extended period of time.
6. Putting in an offer before carefully considering all the pros and cons of the property Have you ever heard some someone saying that the Agent told them they were the only person wanting to buy a certain property, so there’s no real rush to put in their offer? Usually the exact opposite is true. If you haven’t had the proper building and legal inspections done and haven’t really had time to suss out the neighbourhood, don’t be rushed into making a big mistake. See mistake number 4.
7. Offering more than a house is worth If the property market is hot, houses are selling quickly and for high prices, and you’re serious about this house, it’s all too easy to get sucked into a bidding war – either at auction or private sale. To help you establish the worth of a property, I’m offering you a complimentary Property Profile report. This report provides a detailed electronic assessment of the property as well as comparable property sales and suburb details. All you have to do is email me the internet property listing.
Even knowing all of this, you may still find yourself making decisions based on emotion during the home-buying process. Slow down, overcome your emotions and ultimately, make a home-purchase decision that’s good for both your feelings and your finances. Traveling through motherhood By Rebecca Kahane, Mobile Travel Agent & Mum
When you become a mum you don’t realise that you are about to embark on a journey of scheduling. For many of us, it is a daily battle to keep up the smooth running of our families. From feed times to sleep times to school runs to football, tennis, gymnastics, ballet, karate, swimming to shopping, cooking, cleaning, washing to having 5 minutes to have a cup of tea. Everything has to be timed and scheduled otherwise chaos ensues! So, how do we fit in work? Well, we schedule a bit more, from au pairs to nannies, to grandparents, to childcare, kinder and school, somehow it all fits in - just! In my case, I have found a solution that works perfectly for me. Prior to starting my own family I worked in a traditional retail travel agency which I loved, but I knew would not be ideal with little ones in tow. I soon discovered that becoming a Mobile Travel Agent was the best fit for me. I could continue to work in a field that I am completely passionate about as well as work around the needs of my family. All I required was my laptop and I joined MTA. MTA is a highly awarded, respected and recognised brand within the travel industry, both nationally and internationally and it enjoys ‘big agency’ buying power with exclusive deals and unique travel experiences in both the corporate and leisure markets. I have become part of a national organisation, but I determine how much or how little I work. Some days as a mum you have more time than other days. Sometimes it suits me to work while
the kids are at school and other days I work after they are in bed. The other benefit that I have found in this arrangement is that it enables me to service my clients in a way that I was previously not able to. I can meet them for a quick coffee to discuss their travel requirements or for my corporate clients I can visit their workplace which saves them time and provides a much more personalised service.
It’s too important for us ‘mums’ to have our ‘adult’ time. Every family is different and every mum needs to find the work situation that works within that. It can be done and you can find a work solution that you are satisfied with. It may take some re-scheduling but don’t give up. It’s too important for us mums to have our “adult” time. Despite the financial benefits of working, I have found that going back to work has enabled me to be a better mum. I now feel that I am much more present when I spend time with the children and everyone in our household seems happier. It’s a WIN-WIN-WIN situation!
Rebecca supports local Bayside community groups, organisations and clubs by donating MTA travel vouchers for use in raffle giveaways, silent auctions or the like. If your club or organisation is looking for donations please do not hesitate to contact her for more information at rkahane@mtatravel.com.au or call 0419 953 288. 38

fun for the kids
Just for DAD! Super cute, super easy photo shoots just for DADs
As Fathers Day is this month I thought I would show you three really easy photo shoots you can do with your kids just for dad. Smile, giggle and have some fun. Don’t forget to visit me on facebook and say hello. Facebook.com/lizzyannstudio Photo Shoot 1. Feet love All you need is a Black marker and your kids. Write “We Love Daddy” on your kids feet. Watch out there will be lots of giggles. Get the kids to sit down with their feet up. You need to lie down and get the camera low to the ground, make sure the camera is focusing on their feet. And snap away. Photo Shoot 2. Dress up Grab some of Dad’s work clothes out of the cupboard. Try to use something that signifies who dad really is. Tradesman clothes with a tool belt. Suits with a tie and hat. Footy jumper with a football. I took the boys outside first then got them dressed to make sure they did not trip over in the big shoes! Just start taking pictures, sitting, standing, cuddling, pretending to be dad! Photo Shoot 3. Chalk background This one is a bit of fun! Create your own little stories or use one of my very simple ideas to create a cute picture just for dad. Try drawing a city scape and put the kids in capes flying above the city, or draw rain falling onto an umbrella and have the kids snuggling under it.
