Fab family fun

The school holidays may be over and lunchbox Mama back on duty but that doesn’t mean the fun has to stop! Tasmania has so many wonderful activities, events and adventures to keep your free time fun filled right through to the next school holidays!! Here are some of Mama’s favourites.

1. Healthy Hobart, Healthy Kids: Dance. Pat Murnane Hall, Lenah Valley. Fridays 9.30-10.15am from Feb 11 - Mar 18. Free.

Part of the Healthy Hobart program, join in these free 45-minute kid’s ‘active dance play’ activities that may include dance warm up, dance with ribbons, hula hoop freestyle, freeze dancing, parachutes, obstacles and a dance follow the leader conga line. Join in for some fun and learn new ideas to get your kids active in your home, community or school.

2. Healthy Hobart - Mountain Biking. Sunday, 13 March, 10-11am. Ages 8+. Free.

This high energy mountain biking session is perfect for anyone who wants to learn the fundamentals of mountain biking including body position, braking, cornering and more. Join the team in a safe and non-intimidating environment at the Queens Domain. You can bring your own bike or hire a free bike at the session. Remember your helmet!

3. mapiya lumi | around here Henry Hunter Galleries, Level 1 Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery. Bookings required.

mapiya lumi | around here is TMAG’s new long-term exhibition for children 0-7 years, a specially-developed, age-appropriate museum experience for young children and their carers, designed with the child’s perspective in mind. Journey through Tasmania as a ‘little big home’ – a place of deep oceans, soaring rock columns and tumbling waterfalls, but also a place for tiny nests, comfy kitchens and fire pit stories. Little ones will love the dedicated space for ages 0-3 and there’s plenty of fun for the bigger kids too, from glowing rocks to a prehistoric fossil, from beautiful paper-cut worlds to an ancient story in the sky! This is an adventure not to be missed!

4. National Penny Farthing Championships - Saturday 19th Feb, 10am-4pm. $15, under 16 free.

Did you know that since 1983 the historic village of Evandale has built a reputation for holding the most competitive Penny Farthing races in the world? This year promises to live up to the reputation and you don’t want to miss out. Race events, including the National Penny Farthing Championship, will be held throughout the day and you’ll be able to enjoy a small number of food stalls and entertainment, and explore this beautiful Georgian village too.

5. The Adventures of Peter Rabbit and his friends. The Playhouse Theatre, 106 Bathurst Street, Hobart. 20tApril - 1 May. $15 - $40.

Five delightful tales including Peter Rabbit, The Tailor of Gloucester and Jemima Puddle-Duck are interwoven with the fascinating life of their creator, Beatrix Potter, in this enchanting, enlightening entertainment for all ages. The play moves back and forth from the fantasy world she created to the intriguing story of Beatrix Potter herself, who overcame her lonely, strict childhood — in which her writings and drawings were discouraged in the maleoriented Victorian era — to become the most widely read children’s author of all times. We also meet Beatrix’s governess, Annie, and her children for whom many of the stories were originally written. Get your tickets here!

6. The Wider Earth - The Theatre Royal, Hobart - 31st Mar-1st Apr. Ages 12+. Tickets start at $30.

Look out!! The Dead Puppet Society brings together some of the most inventive artists in the country, tackling the big issues that animate our understanding of the world, and fusing technology and technical skill in ways that will captivate the imaginations and curiosity of young people and adults alike. The award-winning drama The Wider Earth tells the gripping story behind the rebellious 22-year-old Charles Darwin’s daring voyage on HMS Beagle to the far side of the world and one of the most important discoveries in history.

7. Deloraine and Districts Folk Museum, Great Western Tiers Visitor Centre, 98-100 Emu Bay Road, Deloraine. Tickets start at $4.

Take the kids back in time at the Deloraine and Districts Folk Museum and get some real insight into the region’s pioneering past. The Folk Museum and Pioneer village and reproduction heritage buildings showcase the lives and farming equipment of early settlers, set in lovely fragrant gardens of English flowers and native trees. The new family and history research room houses some amazing resources to assist you with project and family tree research which would be so much fun!

8. The Wiggles Fruit Salad TV Big Show Tour - Theatre North at The Princess. 20 Feb.

The Wiggles are excited to once again sing, dance and play music for their fans, and will be joined by the newest Wiggles (as seen on their latest YouTube release, Fruit Salad TV) Tsehay, Evie, John and Kelly, along with all of their Wiggly Friends too; Dorothy the Dinosaur, Captain Feathersword, Wags the Dog, Henry the Octopus, Shirley Shawn the Unicorn, Officer Beaples and Bok the hand puppet. This is your chance to dance those socks off to your favourite tunes, but you better be quick, tickets are selling like hot potatoes!
