Mammut Testevent
1
A long haul to the perfect photo.
2
Pure Ascent means combining outdoor experiences with top performance. There is no doubt about the efforts required from the photo shoot participants before photographer Röbi Bösch pressed the button. A line of several hundred metres snaked up the side of the mountain. Kitted out with high-performance Mammut equipment, the participants had an opportunity to experience for themselves its light weight and outstanding safety before the photo shoot on the Julier Pass.

What started out as a relaxed tour suddenly became very demanding due to sudden fog and the high numbers taking part. However, the mountain guides from the Mammut Alpine School did a great job of managing the proceedings and keeping everything on schedule. In the words of one participant: “The sun was shining, I sent a text message and when I looked up 2 minutes later I couldn’t see a thing.” To protect themselves from the wind, the participants dug snow trenches. This gave them an activity to focus on as well as protection. In some trenches wine and Tyrol specialities were on hand to lift spirits. After waiting around for almost three hours, the mountain guides decided to call it a day. In an atmosphere of general disappointment, everyone started to get ready for the descent. However, at that precise moment, the sun started to break through. The participants immediately took up the chant: “Photo, photo, photo …” After a brief discussion, Röbi took over and the arrow was created in record time – in the bag! Mammut Pure Ascent
A battle against the elements. Despite foggy conditions, the photo shoot participants were able to look back on a great day. In the end, the Mammut Testevent once again clearly demonstrated how things work in the mountains. Despite top-class equipment, expertise and planning, at the end of the day it’s the weather that decides. And you can’t simply order that from the Mammut catalogue. However, lightweight and compact Pure Ascent equipment is perfect to allow the next record attempt to be launched without delay. Of course, Christian Stangl would always be ready …
11 Victors The team earned extra praise from Christian Stangl.
4|
12 Peak performers As well as the mountain, the team overcame fog and cold.
After a successful photo shoot, the participants were rewarded with Wini’s creative outdoor cooking, a diet lecture from Christian Stangl and a cosy evening with lots of mountaineering talk at the bar. The next morning, it was time for the eagerly awaited “Christian Stangl against all” race. However, sudden fog made this impossible. Nevertheless, six out of nine groups managed to scale their summits. Respect! (Even from Christian!)

To prevent a new record attempt from turning into a nail-biting experience. In addition to the outdoor experience, more and more ski tourers are focusing on the great physical effort and training effect of a mountain tour. We have developed the Pure Ascent collection especially for them. It is fast, lightweight, compact and safe. To ensure that goals are actually achieved.
13 Skyrunner Christian Stangl Everest in a day was yesterday. In 2010, Christian Stangl aims to be the first person to have stood on all “14 seven summits”: 14 summits – 11 countries – 7 continents. Christian Stangl is a skyrunner who has made a decisive contribution to mountaineering over the last decade. Stangl calls his style “skyrunning” – or scaling the world’s highest mountains in the shortest possible time. He successfully completed the “seven summits speed project” in 2007 with a total climbing time of 58 hours and 45 minutes. Christian Stangl needs to climb just two more summits to complete his current “14 seven summits” project: K2 (8,611 m), the best-known second-highest continental peak, and Mt. Tyree (4,852 m) in the Antarctic. Stay up to date at www.mammut.ch

Mobile safety application
Systematic shovelling
The Mammut safety application for the iPhone and iPod includes a clinometer, a GPS-based altimeter and links to all avalanche bulletins worldwide. Hold the iPhone parallel to the slope to display the approximate angle. Together with the avalanche status report and an assessment of the terrain, the angle of the slope gives important information to help you assess the avalanche status risk.
The minutes tick past relentlessly. After 15 minutes a buried victim’s chances of survival drop dramatically. In particular the shovelling eats up time. The right method, the V-shaped conveyor belt approach, makes shovelling faster and more effective. Avalanche rescue instructor Manuel Genswein has been investigating the most effective shovelling method since 2004.

Probe expert (320 cm) Steel cable with protective sleeve | Screw locking | Special packaging with instructions and emergency plan
Probe light (240 cm) Dyneema cord | Telescopic locking | Special packing with instructions and emergency plan
A field test in Norway has now shown: regardless of how deep the victim is buried and the angle of the slope, the conveyor band strategy comes out best. In addition to the PULSE Barryvox® and a shovel, Genswein recommends that people going on tours should also carry a probe. “It can make the difference between life and death.”

Recycling materials Made from used PET bottles, Cyclepet is the outer material found in the Nirvana Rocker, Nirvana Ride and Niva Ride models. In comparison to the use of crude oil-based raw materials, recycling PET reduces waste water volumes by 20 %, energy consumption by 50 % and harmful emissions by 60 %. Another significant contribution to protecting nature. TM

Indoor Climbing
Climbing for insiders. More and more climbers are turning halls into cliffs. For many young enthusiasts, this is their first introduction to climbing. It’s good to know that Mammut is making climbing gyms safer with a whole range of special accessories, from carabiners to ergonomic climbing harnesses.
Team Trip 2010: A Bit of a Rough In April, the Mammut Pro Team set off for the cliffs of the UK’s Peak District. As well as some very technical climbing, calling for a strong focus on movement, the ban on hooks makes the routes even more of a challenge. Only friends and wedges are permitted for securing. The team climbed classic after classic, from tricky boulders to spectacular ridges and walls. Including routes such as Master Edge and Parthian Shot, enough to send a shiver down your spine … Further information can be found at www.mammut.ch/teamtrip

Mammut – Worldwide Partner of IMFGA
150 years of rope teams, team spirit and solidarity
It all began with ropes, and ropes are still at the centre of our work. Even if they are now highly specialised and effective high-tech products, unlike their 19th century predecessors which were also used in agriculture. Top-quality products are particularly important in the mountains. However, as well as safe equipment other values have similar significance. Including rope teams, team spirit and solidarity. This solidarity is particularly important to Mammut in the run-up to a major anniversary. We are therefore extending our existing commitment with the International Federation of Mountain Guides Associations (IFMGA) into a partnership. With each individual anniversary activity, we and our customers are supporting the IFMGA. To allow mountain guides from emerging nations such as Kyrgyzstan (where Mammut is already active) or Peru to receive sound training from the IFMGA and modern equipment. As always, the best news is kept to last. You don’t need to wait until 2012 for some spectacular celebrations. You can be part of our rope team now and take part in the biggest test event of all time. Further information can be found at www.mammut.ch/150years

The countdown has begun: in 2012, Mammut will be celebrating its 150th anniversary. Celebrate with us and be part of an unforgettable experience. There are plenty of reasons to celebrate. The traditional ropeworks in Dintikon, founded by Kaspar Tanner in 1862, has grown to become an international company with innovative products which are setting new safety standards in mountaineering and climbing.
