RNLI Tower of Refuge Walk
Event details
This event will take place on Saturday 7th April 2012. The walk out to the Tower will begin at approximately 5.45 pm, returning at around 8.15 pm.
RNLI Tower of Refuge Walk Outline of the Event The Tower of Refuge is an iconic structure in the bay of Douglas and we believe that there are a large number of Island residents who have never stepped onto Conister Rock, or been inside the Tower. We wanted to give the public the opportunity to do this safely.

This event is unique to Douglas, and we believe that the interest in this event will be considerable and could potentially become an annual event.
Who is this event aimed at? This event is aimed at all island residents of all ages. It will be of particular interest to those who are interested in the history of the Tower, and those who have always wanted to venture out to the Tower but never dared.
Charity Involvement The history of the Tower of Refuge lends itself perfectly to this event being a fund raising event for the RNLI. We are unable to charge the public to walk out to the Tower, however the RNLI will be in the area taking donations, selling their souvenirs and raising awareness of their charity.

RNLI Tower of Refuge Walk
The charity that saves lives at sea Volunteers are the heart of the RNLI. They rely on more than 40,000 volunteers - on lifeboats, at stations, on beaches, and in fundraising. Some crew members and most lifeguards are full time - they work with other staff to ensure comprehensive safety coverage around the Isle of Man and the whole of the British Isles. They provide a 24-hour lifeboat search and rescue service around the coasts of the Island, UK and Republic of Ireland, as well as a seasonal lifeguard service on many of the busiest beaches in England and Wales. • The RNLI also works to promote sea and beach safety. • The RNLI is an independent charity with a board of volunteer trustees. • Every year the charity must find £123.5 million to keep our lifeboats and lifeguards operating.

Tower Insurance Company Limited Tower Insurance is the leading general insurance company on the Isle of Man. Their history can be traced back to 1928 when a group of local businessmen formed the company to meet the growing need for a local insurer. Since then they have continued to focus on providing good value for local customers with support for individuals and businesses alike. Named after the Tower of Refuge in Douglas Bay, which forms part of their corporate identity, it seems rather fitting that they wanted to sponsor this event. Their offices on Victoria Street is open to their customers during normal business hours, and provides views across Douglas Bay and of the Tower of Refuge. The Isle of Man has a close bond with the RNLI as does the company with the Tower of Refuge and in sponsoring this event they will be contributing to the success of it, and more importantly helping to raise funds for the charity.
Extras We are also hoping to have an actor out at the tower reciting the famous William Wordsworth Poem, “On entering Douglas Bay” from which the Tower of Refuge gets its name. The RNLI will be present with a stall raising money and awareness for their charity. The Coastguard is fully supportive of this event and will be present on the day to ensure health and safety at all times. We will also invite other groups such as the sea cadets along to take part in the event.
