Dear Friends, It gives me great pleasure to bring you the 2015 edition of the NEXT100 book that features the brightest stars of India’s IT manager community—and its future CIOs. Six years ago, the NEXT100 awards program was conceived with active support from senior leaders in the IT community. The aim was to identify people who had the skills, talent and ambition to become Chief Information Officers (CIOs). I am delighted to inform you that the NEXT100 awards have already become one of India’s most recognized accolades—and a highly coveted recognition by IT managers aspiring to make it to the top. Tens of past awardees have taken up bigger responsibilities and senior roles in their own organizations—and elsewhere—and are making a difference. Many have also become CIOs. I am confident that all our NEXT100 award winners will go on to accomplish great things in the future—whilst striving to meet the heightened expectations of their colleagues, supervisors, and their families. The 2015 NEXT100 award winners who are featured in this edition of the book have been selected through an intensive three-stage process that was executed over four months. The call for applications was made in mid-June, and hundreds of applicants responded. All qualified applicants were invited to undertake a set of psychometric tests to determine their personality traits and leadership styles. In the final stage, shortlisted candidates were interviewed by India’s leading CIOs and CFOs who comprise the jury panel. In parallel, reference checks for qualified applicants were also conducted. Every year, the selection criteria for the NEXT100 awards is reviewed and ratified by the NEXT100 jury members, and the final list of award winners is generated using a proprietary scoring model that assigns carefully calibrated weights to various factors, including educational qualifications, quality of work experience, jury interview scores and referee recommendations. On behalf of the entire team at IT Next and the NEXT100 jury, I congratulate all the award winners for 2015. We look forward to hearing about their continued success in the years to come, and wish them all the best. The continued success of the NEXT100 program depends on the efforts of many people. Methodology The selection process for the NEXT100 2015 commenced in June 2015 with a call for applications. The entire IT manager community was informed through a series of e-mails, print advertisements, and the social media. By the first week of August 2015, more than 3,500 aspirants had registered for the process. The selection of the award winners was done through a three-stage process, as in the past years. In the first stage, all award aspirants had to complete a detailed application form—and provide extensive personal and professional information, including education, technical skills and work experience. They also had to nominate referees who could support their claim for consideration for the award. In the second stage, applicants took two psychometric tests to evaluate their personality profiles and leadership styles. Both tests were administered online by Paris-based Central Test International. Every applicant who completed the two tests received a free, personalized copy of the assessment reports for reference. The NEXT100 jury members identified a set of criteria (including education, length and quality of work experience) to prepare a short list of candidates for the interview stage. Every shortlisted candidate was independently interviewed by two NEXT100 jury members. Separately, independent recommendations were obtained for each candidate from the designated referees, including current supervisors. The scores and evaluations assigned to all candidates in every stage of the selection process were input into a proprietary scoring model that assigns carefully calibrated weights to various factors. The final list of NEXT100 award recipients, listed in this book, is an outcome of this scoring model. To ensure that the NEXT100 awards are completely fair and unbiased, no member of the IT NEXT editorial team was involved in the selection or elimination of the award winners, nor are editors and staff of IT Next magazine a part of the jury panel. As in past years, the NEXT100 awards program draws on the knowledge and support of the CIO and CFO communities. Forty seven senior executives who comprise the jury of the NEXT100 awards, collectively represent many hundreds of years experience in IT and corporate management, were involved as advisors, interviewers and selectors this year. The jury panel debated, deliberated and decided on the award winner selection process—and conducted detailed interviews of all shortlisted applicants. 14 | NEXT100 | December 2015

Personality Test & Managerial Style Inventory Test All aspirants for the NEXT100 awards take two psychometric evaluations—a personality test and a managerial style test—that are administered by Paris-based Central Test. The results of the tests are factored into the total evaluation of the candidate. All candidates who take the evaluations receive detailed personalized reports that can be used for self development. The Central Test Personality Inventory for Professionals (CTPI-R) test provides an assessment of work related personality traits that play a crucial role in performance. According to the test designers, CTPI-R conforms to the standards of scientific validation set out by the International Test Commission, and the American Psychological Association. The workplace competencies are defined as “clusters of knowledge, skills and attitudes that are predictive of superior performance in a given job”. According to Central Test, the competency scores in the CTPI-R are not a ‘direct assessment’ of competencies but an ‘assessment of proximity’ of the test taker to the profile of others who have

demonstrated a high level of that specific competency. The assumption behind this method of evaluation is that people with similar profiles will be more likely to exhibit similar abilities. As the scores are derived from an assessment of proximity to an ideal profile, they give an indication of the extent to which the candidate is psychologically inclined towards high performance on a specific competency. The score on each dimension of competency also provides an indication of the extent to which the person is trainable on each competency. The second psychometric evaluation, the Management Style Inventory Test, assesses a candidate’s aptitude for leadership— and identifies their managerial style. The test uses seven important management dimensions (Innovation, Global Vision, Conceptual, Reflective, Affiliation, Intervention and People-Orientation) to determine the proximity of the candidate’s profile to typical management roles like Chief Executive, Motivator, Project Manager, Entrepreneur, Expert, Strategist and Executive Manager.

Personality Profile Workplace Competencies According to Central Test, the CTPI-R test has been standardized on an international group of 5000+ working managerial professionals. The test uses a continuous scale of 0 to 100% to deduce 21 competencies that are relevant in the workplace. The conclusions are based on statistical studies and theoretical models. This year’s NEXT100 award winners exhibited high scores on work competencies like Resilience, Mentoring Others and Team Building, and low on Supervision and Caution. Management Style The Management Style Inventory test assesses a person’s preferred style of leadership and management on seven dichotomous dimensions. Attributes like Innovation, Global Vision, Conceptual and Reflective Thinking, Affiliation, Intervention and People- Orientation are measured on a scale of 0 to 10, with 0 indicating a low level and 10 indicating a high level. The test has 49 questions in forced choice format, and the outcome is a graphical presentation of the inherent leadership qualities and management style. Overall, the NEXT100 group recorded relatively high scores on Innovation, Reflective and Conceptual Thinking, and low on Intervention. The biggest difference between the NEXT100 winners and other applicants was seen in Innovation. 7.0

ost employees aspire for designations—and many want to become the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of a company at some stage in life. Do designations reflect our work, or our achievements? Most of us remain confined to 9 to 5 jobs, and only perform within our defined (or not so well defined) roles. We assume that we cannot go beyond them, and wait for someone to direct or lead us. However, in our personal lives we behave and perform differently from work situations. In our personal lives, we assume the role of a CEO and continuously strive to create value for our family. No one tells us, but we assume ownership, responsibility and authority to provide a better life to our families—and continuously strive for it. Similarly, if we start behaving like a CEO, or an entrepreneur, and assume sense of ownership in all aspects of work life then that is the road to success. So, who is a CEO? The title of a CEO is one of the most coveted, but least understood postion in a company. Everyone believes that CEOs can do whatever they want, are all powerful, and are magically competent. By its very nature, the job description of a CEO encompasses the fulfillment of the needs of employees, customers, investors, communities, and the law. The CEO of a company is responsible for every decision—big or small. The buck stops with him (or her). His job is to design and

shape the organization to continuously create value for its employees, customers, partners and society at large.

In the Shoes of a CEO Behaving like a CEO is not easy—neither is the life of an actual CEO. You not only have your own problems and challenges, but you also need to solve the challenges and problems of your team, your employees, society and community at large Since people come from different parts of society, social, economic and educational backgrounds, they have different expectations and behave differently at work situations. As a leader and CEO, you have to cope with mood swings, ups and downs, personal likes and dislikes of all subordinates, and still maintain your cool and balance, and maintain a high degree of motivation. As a CEO, all your decisions impact not just you but t h e entire organization and its stakeholders. This means that CEOs need to put their act together—long before they become one. So, if you want to become a CEO, start thinking and acting now. The first step is to start viewing yourself as a CEO, and not an employee. We all are CEOs of the role and position we are in. So, instead of seeing yourself as a role player, view yourself as the head, coach or the director. Schedule time to think and plan. Make time to get away from the daytoday distractions and focus on deep thinking, planning, and decision

making. Isolate yourself to concentrate on strategic, bigpicture issues. Learn from actions and behaviors of those who have already made it. Focus on identifying the and acquiring the qualities that make a CEO successful.

Aspire for More Always think bigger than what you want. Most of us spend all our time and energy in managing crisis and transactions, trying to improve efficiency and revenue. But, we hardly spare time for thinking outofbox, seeing the bigger picture, and strategizing. Most of us are afraid of thinking big, or even thinking beyond the four walls. We are scared of taking risks. For many people, being rich is a pleasant dream— and they do nothing about it. But truly successful and wealthy people are committed to being rich and being successful. They are prepared to everything until the dream becomes reality.

Be a Role Model You may not be the CEO or a top officer in your organization, but all successful people set an example for others. Taking an initiative to do something great, creative or disruptive using unconventional thinking is the way leaders or role models are created. Great leaders set examples by leading from the front, a n d by doing things themselves; they do not delegate heavyweight tasks to subordinates. dirty. So, pick up the torch—and make things happen. Leading from the front is the most effective way to lead a family, a department or a company. Let’s not be afraid of heavy lifting or delegate the calluses.

Prepare for the Long Haul To be selfdetermined is to assert confidence in oneself, and whatever one intends to do. If you are determined then success is guaranteed. Leaders exhibit and perform their actions with full confidence and determination, irrespective of hardships and problems. With determination you will deliver with complete passion, energy and confidence— while enjoying your work. One constant factor that characterizes top leaders is the achievement of success at any cost. As Colin Powell s a y s , “A dream doesn’t become reality through magic; it takes sweat, determination and hard work”

Invest in Yourself Career cannot be developed without knowledge. Always strive to be better than what you are today. Don’t be afraid to take risks and make mistakes. Remember, failure is only a temporary setback on the road to success. Many of us stop learning and improving ourselves when we start working. We invest in good clothes, cars and luxury items—but very little in improving ourselves. Ensure that you are continuously learning and enhancing your knowledge to be better than others. You have to act with confidence and demonstrate abilities to be better than others.

Take Risks We are often taught that risk taking is not good—and can be dangerous to physical, metal and financial health. However, to be successful, we must evaluate all opportunities that we encounter in our journey of life—and take calculated risks. Challenge yourself, and move out of your comfort zone. Most successful people have taken risks. “The key enterprising skills I used when first starting out are the very same ones I use today: the art of delegation, risktaking, surrounding yourself with a great team and working on projects you really believe in,” says Charles Branson. 52 | NEXT100 | December 2015

The role of the CIO is critical and crucial to the survival and growth of any business today

Be a Team Player Being a team player is no longer optional; it is mandatory. If you want to achieve anything of consequence, you will need the help and cooperation of lots of people. Your main objective is to structure everything you do in such a way that is open to helping others, even as you achieve your goals. Remember, in all your interactions with your team, your role is to be supportive and helpful. Your role is not to challenge, criticize or argue— but to look for solutions and for opportunities to help other people make their maximum contributions as well. When you participate in a team meeting, you are “onstage”. Everyone is watching you. The best team players I have ever seen are those whose comments to the other members of the team are in the form of suggestions on how things can be done better. The best team members are always offering to help other people get on top of some aspect of their work after the meetings. This focus on collaboration and cooperation will get noticed, and it sends a signal that you are a person to be both liked and respected.

Admit to Mistakes

Be honest and optimistic As a CEO or business leader, you have to raise the levels of ethical behavior and be transparent and honest. Employees in any organization look up to their leaders and copy their behavior and values. A CEO is the reflection of the organization behavior. Honest business practices inspire staff and customers with respect for your mission. Honest business practices build foundations of trust with colleagues, competitors, staff, customers and society at large. When employers deal honestly with their staff, employees are motivated to drive the business forward. One of the most important lessons I have learned is that you must think differently to become successful. My largest struggle, when developing and creating ideas, has been to maintain a positive attitude and to stay focused on my vision for the longevity of the project.

Be willing to admit your mistakes, as this increases respect towards the leaders. Everyone makes mistakes and so do business leaders. However, it is important that one admits and corrects them. Poor decision making or denying to having made a mistake will erode the credibility of the leader amongst employees. As a business leader, we have to take hard decisions, so it is important to be honest and ethical. Behaving or acting like a CEO or a leader is a mindset change. Those who are able to bring about this change will go a long way, and will be happy and successful people—both in their personal and professional lives. Making this change is can be easy. Just take it one step at a time.
