Animation of LIGHT and SHADOWS
How we Perceive Light
Source of LIGHT
The Structures and openings were designed to create a play of light on the structure, by which it enhances the aesthetics of the building.
VERNACULAR ARCHITECTURE Earlier the spaces were designed in a manner which leads the user to orient himself to different spaces. This was done by having a great understanding in Light and Shadows. None of the openings were designed unnecessarily, Each and every openings were planned and designed as per the need of light for particular function.
The perception of space is directly connected to the way light react to our environment. What we see, what we interpret, and etc. it is all affected how light interacts with us. Dynamics of different lighting, such as daylight and articial light create different mood and visual experience. Light helps us to dene the spaces where a person wants to connect to the space, light brings them together.
The uses of articial lightings has totally eleminated the essesnce of space. Where as, in Articial lighting the spaces is lit up with equal quantity of light and each and ever zone of the spaces has equal amount of light , which creates space more at and boring.
The spaces should be designed in a way where it creates the animation of light and shadow. Such spaces helps the users to orient themself into the spaces, and this also bridges the gap between user and architecture. Only few architects creates such elements to their design
We human beings tends to stay in an indoor environment, It is important to design the indoor spaces well lit. If we look at the current scenario, Despite the fact that most of the time people spend indoors, a huge number of buildings in the world are made without taking into consideration the natural movement of air and light. Currently, architects only think in one tangent which seems to them the most important and neglect the other. Because of this many issues and problems are created and later we architect has to face it and resolve this issue. Because of this small issues, many huge problems are created such as health problems, dark indoor and outdoor spaces, and so on.
My aim is to get back the essence of light and shade into the spaces, currently is it getting lost, by which create awareness among the people of ways to use natural lighting in designing the space and in usage. By this I will tend to create a bond between architectural spaces and people.
THESIS
Currently architects and designers provide windows without understanding the need of light for a particular program, and as a result they design window openings which are huge and windows are not designed properly, as most of the designers make replica of the existing windows.

Current human’s thinking
Earlier human’s thinking
Earlier human beings major concern for housing was Quality of living, and spaces should designed in a way , where it creates social interaction. Space and Area were not a big concern for them, the only need was better living condition.
Earlier human’s thinking
N
Unnecessary huge openings do kill the essence of light and quality of the space.
Current human beings major concern is space and area, where they are ready to neglect the quality of space and living condition. It’s almost the opposite thinking of the earlier times.
Current human’s thinking
Every activity requires a particular amount of light to perform a task, and the quality of light do changes as per activities.

MAJOR IMPACT ON SRA AND MHADA BUILDINGS.
The site context is of old chawls and low rise buildings. Most of this buildings and chawls are 40 to 60 years old.
INTENTIONS
DESIGN OBJECTIVES SPACE PLANNING Spaces should be planned on based upon their functions light requirement and on cardinal axes.
FACADE Facade plays an important role in building to get image of the building and also to get light inside the building. It is necessary to understand the material, thickness, and texture while designing.
OPENING Design openings which diffuses the natural light and get inside the spaces and also don’t blocks the viewport. It should also design where it blocks the harsh sunlight and wind in highrises.
Site area : 1.33 acres Earlier there was a 3 chawls which is now proposed as residential and commercial complex.
Better Living Spaces. Create spaces which are flexible and lighting is provided based upon their function. Ÿ Create Comfortable environment Ÿ Use Maximum Natural Light throughout the Day. Ÿ Design openings which blocks glare, heat, and unwanted wind. Ÿ Ÿ
PROGRAM Creating a Multifuctionable space where different kind of light can be explored. I am Designing a Commercial space, Rehab Housing and high-end living.
Based on the research and analysis it was found to take site which is centrally located in the city and new proposals are getting proposed in the locality.
Learning from the vernacular and traditional architecture to understand the openings design and space planning based upon different functions and activity.
When we look at to the vernacular and traditional housing systems we nd that they were well thought and each spaces and openings were designed as per the requirement of a particular function and that made the houses more livable and economical. In my thesis I am studying this techniques from vernacular houses and buildings to understand how the spaces should be zoned to particular location as per the activity happening. Even I am understanding the Openings and window to learn and redesign the openings of our current windows system.
Form Study
Learning from the PAST
My Concept was to camouage the two different topologies and create a hybrid. As Chawl blocks allows sufcient light and cross ventilation between the spaces, and the new upcoming high-rises lack into that. If I collaborate these two topologies and design a building which will lead to a better design.

A variety of heights and orientations create multiple characters of social interactions and outdoor activities that are visually and physically linked.
Expirements
Studying the light quality at different levels of the building. USER ANALYSIS - 25 level of the building From 12.30 to 1.pm diffused light lit up the indoor space and this makes the space comfortable. After 1.pm harsh sunlight from western side do remain till sunsets and makes the indoor space uncomfortable, increase the temperature, create unwanted glare which do affect the user. OBJECTIVE 1

Analysis and Resultant for Objective 2 It was analysed that when the light hits the surface, then the surfaces do obstruct the light to a greater extent and creates a lot of dark spots. The reection level is quite less and most of the light is getting reected only in one part of the object.
6.15.PM
USER ANALYSIS - 7 level of the building The user does nds the indoor space does have sufcient natural light entire day, but as a window is on the southern side there is glare and heat which affect during afternoon hours. Due to the unwanted glare and heat at times user do nd to keep the curtains on, which leads to use articial lighting during the day time.
8.AM
Analysis and Resultant for Objective 1 It was analysed that when the light hits the surface, then it gets reected more, but not to the greater extent. So the reection only happens only to the upper level only, and the light does not reach sufcient to the lower part.
6.15.PM
USER ANALYSIS - 2 level of the building The user does nd morning time more convenient to work and study, but to noon the space becomes a bit darker at times the users tends to switch on the articial lighting for study purpose or else seat near to the window area. During the evening hours the reected light lit up the space and it becomes easy to work and study. On an average it is analyzed the natural daylighting quality is soft / smooth, and doesn't affect the mood and glare is not created, by which work can be done without any obstruction or disturbance.
Analysis and Resultant for Objective 3 It was analysed that when the light hits the surface, the light doesn't pass through the object, but the reected light takes care of this and lit up the almost entire space.
Analysis and Resultant for Objective 4 Here I analyzed that there is a balance of positive and negative spaces. Where the amount of lit up area is equal as the darker space. This relationship creates harmony in the space.

Creating a clearstory above the window will allow more diffused natural light into the space, and helps to reduce glare into the spaces.
Adding vertical windows to the spaces where view is not required but light is, so at such places this windows will be provided.
Windows with balconies are designed with vertical surface, which will block the glare and only allows the diffuse light into the spaces.

The Kolis are the fishermen who are still doing the fishing occupation. Their activities starts at the mid night and last till afternoon, where they uses the jetties to get the fist to the island, then cleaning, storing, drying and selling activities takes place.
The Kolis houses are designed in a way where the dedicated spaces are provided to perform the various activities, and also divides their working spaces and residing space. As the kolis have a joint family system and incremental construction system is design for their future expansion.
The Boat repair users and the Fish sellers have the a connection between them as their working are depended on each other, so the houses are placed ontop of each other such that it create a easy work flow. The spaces requirements for both the users have many similarities.

Reading Pavilion YEAR PLACE
2014 MUMBAI
In the current scenario of a city life, we ď€ nd people are much busy with their work and less connected to the parks and forests, by which there is a disconnect seen between humans and nature. The Aim of the project was to bind this disconnected thread and create a satisfying bond between humans and nature. The brief was to design a reading pavilion inside a jungle where it should act as a public spaces and create a interaction zone with nature. The major program was to create a reading zone as mumbai city don't a dedicated reading zone/place. As books are an escape for us. The books are the easiest way to bring people out from their stressed life and connect them to the hypothetical world and live the dreams.
Build Space The build structures are constructed in a way, where it occupies less ground footprint. Open Space Most of the spaces are left open, and let the nature design the space.
Inward Spaces Cottages
Form Generation The concept was to keep the language of the design that relates to its context. Such that the inspiration of form is taken from tree’s trunk, which doesn’t overpower the build space into the forest.
Structures
Site
Neighboring Bldgs Ticket Counter

Circulation Pattern Internal Road
Circulation is designed in a way where people can meander inside the space how ever they want. Different nodes are created to have interaction zones.
The site which I took was Yeoor Hills National park in Mumbai. The National park is situated right in the center of the city, where it will be more convenient for people to visit. The site is completely covered with trees. A combination of large trees and small trees is easily seen. An Inspiration of tree is taken to derived the form of the structure. The strategy while designing was to create a monotony of man-made and nature. For an Individual who likes reading alone, semi open spaces created inside the structure where the ladder divides the space into four parts. The form doesn't allows to create disturbance between different levels.
Creating bridges between the structure to create connections.
Overlooking roofs creates a viewing deck and also acts as a creative space to think and write.
Structures are designed with having less foot print on the ground for not damaging the Forest soil cover.
The Structures are constructed in concrete where it is precast and the installed to the site. As this doesn’t affects the forest much during construction, and it will also reduce construction time.
