WHY STUDY A LANGUAGE? At the University Language Centre we offer over 80 course units in up to 17 languages, which can be studied for credit or alongside your degree programme. All of our language tutors are native speakers and some of our languages include internationally recognised examinations.
Learning a language:
Post-Intermediate Chinese is the third language course I have taken here at Manchester and I cannot praise the quality of these courses highly enough! Whether you are a student looking to develop your language skills and complement your studies or a member of the public curious to try something new, language courses offer everything from beginners to advanced level classes in a variety of languages. I have been learning Chinese at the University Language Centre for eighteen months now and I have found my classes to be highly engaging and intellectually stimulating. Our teacher uses a range of resources to keep the lessons interesting because as well as learning the fundamentals of the language we read Chinese news articles, try to understand Chinese jokes, watch interesting videos and discover the Chinese world in general. In this way, the course has not only significantly improved my language skills but has also helped me develop an understanding of Chinese culture. The small class sizes have also been highly beneficial to my language learning. They allow the teacher to understand the strengths and weaknesses of the students; they facilitate the development of conversational skills and provide a pleasant learning environment to progress with one’s peers. We also have the opportunity to produce a dossier of independent learning which provides a platform for students to produce a piece of work on an aspect of language or culture that interests them. While it may seem a little daunting to start learning a language from scratch, enrolling on a language course will not only be an enjoyable and enriching experience but it will leave you with a valuable skill set and a deep appreciation of another culture.
