WHAT’S INSIDE
COME ON YOU REDS! It’s a belated start to 2022 for United, but what a few days we have in store – starting here at Leigh Sports Village against a Birmingham side that produced the shock of the WSL season so far to beat Arsenal last Sunday. We’re set to face Arsenal ourselves on Wednesday night, of course, in the Conti Cup quarters, before Tottenham visit LSV next weekend in what could be a crunch league encounter. But today, all the focus will be on overcoming Darren Carter’s resurgent Blues, as Marc Skinner’s charges seek a fourth straight win in all competitions...

HEAD COACH’S COLUMN
MARC SKINNER A big week lies ahead for the Reds, and the boss says his old club’s incredible result last weekend will only sharpen the minds as our WSL campaign restarts... Hello and welcome to Leigh Sports Village for our first fixture of 2022. This year will be a big year for us as a club, a team and the players as individuals. We’re excited to compete in the domestic cups this month and to get our league campaign back under way against my former club, Birmingham City, this afternoon. Birmingham come here on the back of an incredible result against Arsenal last weekend. Birmingham operate so impressively as a collective, a unit, all together, and that’s really important. As much as it was obviously a great result for them, I think it was also great for us. It prepares us in the best possible way to make sure we don’t take Birmingham lightly this afternoon. It’s a great reminder of just how competitive this league is, too. I have nothing but respect for Birmingham, but during this 90 minutes we have a job to do on the pitch. We all know we’ll have to work extremely hard to beat this very organised team.
04
This past week has been about getting the players back into a rhythm after the Christmas break. With no WSL fixture last weekend following the postponement of the West Ham match, we wanted to get them back working on the ball, but also on our principles, so we’re ready to hit the ground running with three games in a week, starting right here. We had a really strong finish to 2021 and though we’ve been delayed getting back to matches in 2022, I’m excited to pick up where we left off. Our focus remains the same and we’re looking to continue with our positive mindset in both boxes, while looking to dominate at every opportunity. With you behind us all the way, we’re confident we’ll do just that.
HEAD COACH’S COLUMN
to manage at the stadium. asrenal, bitter diss, dont think performed badly. lowest possession arsenal have had under JM but got to turn poss in chances, and turn those chanes into goalsm, and how we went in at half-time 1-0 down i’;ll never know. it was diss cos our sloippy poss turned over ball early doors, very much message was to stay in game as long as possible, dont conced, they have to win and willl come out and then we can capitalise, but early goal put on bvack foot, gave us alot to do. but have to be pleased with elements but key moments when didnt take chances cost us. unf not in our hands GD, they have still got to win all their games and we need to make sure we win ours.
“WE HAD A REALLY STRONG FINISH TO 2021 AND THOUGH WE’VE BEEN DELAYED GETTING BACK TO MATCHES IN 2022, I’M EXCITED TO PICK UP WHERE WE LEFT OFF. WE’RE LOOKING TO CONTINUE WITH OUR POSITIVE MINDSET IN BOTH BOXES”

BIG PICTURE
TWENTY PENS IS PLENTY... The postponement of our away fixture against West Ham United means it’s been nearly four weeks since the Reds last took to the pitch, on a day when Marc Skinner’s side secured our biggest win of the 2021/22 campaign so far. There were numerous positives to take from the 5-0 pre-Christmas win against Carla Ward’s Aston Villa – be it the brace from Ella Toone to lift her further up the WSL scoring charts, Martha Thomas continuing her good recent scoring form with another goal, a third straight win in all competitions (all secured with clean sheets), and a first United goal from the penalty spot this season, tucked away confidently by our captain Katie Zelem as she sent keeper Hannah Hampton the wrong way. It was Zel’s 11th converted spot-kick for United – and our 20th goal from the spot overall, including four from Ella Toone, four from Alex Greenwood and one from Martha Harris.

Conti Cup resumes with away tie on Wednesday night United have a big fixture coming up in midweek, as they head to Meadow Park in Borehamwood to face Arsenal in the quarter-finals of the Continental Tyres League Cup. For supporters looking to make the trip to Hertfordshire for the 7.15pm kick-off, visit embed.futureticketing. ie/c/arsenal-women to buy tickets, which cost £8-£12 for adults/£4-£6 for concessions. As ever with our away fixtures, it’s well worth following the Manchester United Women Supporters’ Club
Twitter feed – @MUW_SC – to learn about arrangements for travelling Reds, be it the best stand to buy tickets in, in order to be with fellow Reds, as well as coach travel to certain away games, as MUWSC are looking to arrange for our FA Cup tie away to Bridgwater United at the end of this month. At the time of writing, broadcasting details had yet to be confirmed
AFC Wimbledon’s home will host this year’s Continental Tyres League Cup final – the 11th in the competition’s history
for the Arsenal tie, but keep an eye on the FA Player app, as well as TV schedules, for updates. The other three last-eight ties are West Ham United v Chelsea; Tottenham Hotspur v Liverpool and Manchester City v Bristol City. This year’s final will be played at AFC Wimbledon’s Plough Lane home (known as the Cherry Red Records Stadium) on Saturday 5 March, with up to 9,000 fans potentially in attendance. Tickets are already on sale (£10 for adults; £2.50 for U16s) via afcwimbledon.co.uk/ tickets. If Marc Skinner’s side can get past Jonas Eidevall’s Gunners (inset) in midweek, we’ll be in with a real shout of being there too as the Reds chase a first major trophy.
AWARDS DOUBLE! Marc Skinner and Ella Toone both received Barclays FA Women’s Super League awards this week, after an excellent December 2021 for them and the Reds. We won both of our December WSL games without conceding, with Toone netting twice in the month to cap off a brilliant year in which she scored 12 goals and registered nine assists. Ella beat team-mate Vilde Boe Risa and four other players, including Arsenal’s Jordan Nobbs, to the Player of the Month award. In the Manager of the Month award, Skinner beat his namesake in Tottenham boss Rehanne Skinner to claim the accolade. “It means the world to me as the leader of the staff and players and everyone behind the scenes,” said Skinner, while Toone added: “I think it was a great month for us all. We really clicked, and for me personally this award is really special.”

CLUB ANNOUNCES NEW CEO Arnold to oversee ‘new phase in club’s evolution’, including creation of Fans’ Advisory Board, with representation from the women’s team Last week, Manchester United announced that Richard Arnold, formerly group managing director, will become the club’s chief executive officer, effective from 1 February. On the same day, Ed Woodward will step down from his role as executive vice-chairman. Arnold said: “I am honoured to have the chance to serve this great club and its fans. I am determined to return that honour in any way I can.” Executive co-chairman Joel Glazer said: “I’d like to thank Ed for his tireless work on behalf of Manchester United during his nine years as executive vice-chairman and 16 years with the club. We are now looking forward to Richard and his leadership team opening a new
phase in the club’s evolution, with ambitious plans for investment in Old Trafford, the strengthening of our engagement with fans, and continued drive towards our most important objective – winning on the pitch.” A recent development concerning engagement with fans came at the start of December, with the creation of a Fans’ Advisory Board, set up to strengthen dialogue between the club and supporters, and increase fan input into decision-making. Seven fan representatives were appointed to the FAB, all on a voluntary basis, to provide counsel to club leaders and create a new channel for consultation with
fans. The FAB will be co-chaired by Christopher Saad, an experienced barrister and lifelong United fan, and Richard Arnold, with Deborah Henry (inset), chair of the Manchester United Women’s Supporters’ Club, one of the elected fans. Collette Roche, Manchester United’s chief operating officer, said: “The launch of the Fans’ Advisory Board is a historic step to ensure the supporters’ perspective is always heard and understood right up to the highest levels of the club. This will improve decision-making and reduce the risk of conflict with fans on the most important issues.”

United’s opening scheduled fixture of 2022, against West Ham United on 9 January, was postponed due to a number of positive Covid-19 cases within the Hammers’ squad. The game at Victoria Road in Dagenham, east London will be rescheduled in due course, with all tickets already purchased remaining valid for the rescheduled meeting. The fixture – our first planned clash with Olli Harder’s side in 2021/22 – was one of three WSL fixtures postponed over the opening weekend of the new year, after the Friday game
between Chelsea and Spurs, and the next day’s match between Aston Villa and Everton. Between 28 December-3 January there were 40 positive Covid tests across the WSL and Championship, just down on 44 the week before, which was the highest figure since the FA began releasing such data. We’ll return to Victoria Road later this season
MATCH ROUND-UP
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT... Reds run riot ahead of Christmas Sunday 19 Dec, Leigh Sports Village; Att: 1,001 UNITED 5 (Toone 8, 79; Zelem 13 pen; Staniforth 50; Thomas 73) ASTON VILLA 0 United Women ended 2021 with a five-star display at home to Aston Villa, surging to a 5-0 triumph to sign off the year in style. The Reds raced into an early two-goal lead in the WSL encounter here at Leigh Sports Village, courtesy of Ella Toone’s opener and Katie Zelem’s penalty. That advantage would also be the difference at the break, before Lucy Staniforth and Martha Thomas got on the scoresheet in the second half. Toone completed the scoring in the closing stages with her second of the match, to round off a great day for Marc Skinner’s side. Buoyed by back-to-back 2-0 wins against Everton and Brighton in the previous week, United made a confident start in the foggy early-afternoon conditions. The Reds dominated the ball in the opening stages with the first real opportunity falling to Alessia Russo, who fired a low drive into the side-netting from a tight angle. Skinner’s side had to be patient in possession to break down the well-structured visiting Villans before

Staniforth makes it four soon into the second half
producing a fine sweeping move when the moment arose, to open the scoring eight minutes in. Hayley Ladd played the ball into the path of Vilde Boe Risa, who swivelled and picked out Toone just inside the left of the penalty area, with the no.7 taking a touch to set herself before rolling the ball into the far bottom corner. Another goal would deservedly become two just five minutes later, after Ladd was brought down inside the box by Villa goalkeeper Hannah Hampton. The Wales international drew contact while trying to take Staniforth’s through ball around the keeper, with Zelem stepping up to convert the subsequent penalty. Toone’s earlier strike was her fourth in five meetings with Villa, and the forward nearly added to that tally shortly before the half-hour mark. Ella drove forward from a central area before driving just wide of the target. It could still have been a three-goal lead at the interval, but for some brilliant defending from the away side. First, a good block diverted Ladd’s goal-bound strike away from the target before Russo was denied her fifth goal of the season after her improvised half-volley was superbly cleared off the line, on the stretch by a Villa defender. That third goal may not have been forthcoming at the latter end of the first half but the Reds were rewarded with it in the opening stages of the second period. Russo won the ball high up the pitch before setting up Staniforth, who made no mistake with a curled finish into the net. Lucy was replaced by Kirsty Hanson shortly before the hour mark and Hanson made an impact on 73 minutes. The Scotland international tricked her way into the area before battling brilliantly to get a cross off and pick out fellow substitute Thomas, who guided the ball into an empty net from close range with a cushioned header. It wasn’t to stay at 4-0 for long, as United made it five with 11 minutes left, Toone firing a first-time drive past Hampton after the ball had broken to her inside the box. Toone was inches away from securing a hat-trick late on, but sliced a first-time effort just wide of the target. Turn to p38-39 to see United line-ups for all fixtures

Manchester United Women v Brighton Hove
HAYLEY LADD
As she approaches a half-century of United appearances, our ever-reliable Wales international talks us through memories of lining up for today’s visitors, working under Marc Skinner once more and what’s changed in her two-and-a-half years as a Red... Interview: Harry Robinson
You spent two years with today’s visitors Birmingham before coming to United in June 2019. How did you enjoy your time there? I definitely have fond memories. I obviously had Marc there as manager as well, and it’s nice to be reconnecting with him at United. He’s a big reason why I enjoyed my time at Birmingham so much. Sometimes we forget that coaches can develop just like players can. Do you feel Marc’s changed at all as a coach since you last worked under his management? Part of the reason I enjoy working under Marc so much is that he’s got quite an eccentric personality. He really taps into the emotional side of football. For me, that’s his bread and butter really and that’s the main reason I like working with him so much. That’s obviously not something that’s going to change with him because that’s something that really defines him as a coach. There’s a strong ex-Birmingham contingent at United now in you, Marc, Lucy Staniforth and Aoife Mannion. How good is it to be working with them and particularly Aoife – how good is it to see her back playing every week after her injury struggles? Yeah, it’s so nice. We get on away from the pitch, and on the pitch you’ve got those relationships that have already been formed at old clubs, so it’s really nice to be joining up with those people again. Obviously, Aoife was in Manchester too [at City], even though we were at different clubs, and we met up and still managed to keep in touch. Me and Lucy tried to persuade her to join United
“TO ALMOST BE AT 50 GAMES MAKES ME REALLY PLEASED ... I’M SUPER PROUD TO BE NEARING THAT LANDMARK”
a little bit, and just give answers to any questions she might have about the club. We knew that she’d be a perfect fit for the team and it’s brilliant that she’s joined and that we’re all back together again. Birmingham come into today’s game off the back of a very impressive result v Arsenal, a 2-0 win against the league leaders and their first win of the season. That’s a huge result for them... Yeah, definitely. They had another good performance just before Christmas when they narrowly lost to Man City [3-2]. I caught a good portion of that on TV and they did really well and caused them lots of problems, so I think it’s something that’s been building. It’s not a fluke result or anything; they’ve been building something really decent there. We know going into any game that we can’t take any opposition lightly and we’ve got a real tough game whoever we play. Our focus is always the next game and hopefully Saturday will be a really good one. Your next appearance will be your 50th for United. How does it feel to near a landmark like that? I’m super proud, to be fair, to be nearing that landmark. I’ve really, really enjoyed my time at United and hopefully I’m still producing decent performances. I’m giving all I can to the team. I’m really happy to be part of the squad and to almost be at 50 games makes me really pleased and really happy to be in this position. ▶ ⊲

There are a few ahead of you in the appearance chart – mainly those who have been with the team since our Championship season – but really there’s a core group of almost 10 who have been here for some years now. We’ve signed great players, others have gone on to new challenges, but the atmosphere in the squad must be good when such a solid core has developed? It’s so important for teams to build that foundation of a squad over time. I think last year people were really keen for better results, but all good things take a bit of time. I think all the personalities that Casey [Stoney] brought in originally have been really good people so it’s produced a great core of players and people are always learning and growing together. It makes for an even better team and team environment, too.
16
Hayley was last ondgdgdgdgdgd target for the Reds away to Brighton last month – her third goal for United
It’s a sign of the success of that original recruitment that so many of the players brought in at the start are still here and have developed alongside the team? The squad was quite young in the first year, and the second year. The squad average for ages was probably quite young compared to other teams, especially the top-three teams. It’s something quite unique we have here at United in that a lot of young players have been able to grow into their best form and they will continue to do that. We still have a really young squad on the whole and that’s pleasing because the next couple of years look really good. Let’s have a look back at some of the highlights from the near 50 games. Your first was pretty special, a record-breaking game at City in front of 30,000 fans... That was a great game. The result didn’t go our way, but it was fantastic to see the scope of women’s football in this country, in this area of the country specifically as well. It was an amazing game. It was quite funny that I was playing right-back – I don’t know how many games I would have imagined playing full-back! But I did a role for the team, and it was a great game. Can you pick out your highlights? Goals must be some, but being named Player of the Year in your first season might be the big one?

Just to have that recognition from my team-mates and to know I’ve come into the team and made a good imprint, that was really nice and definitely one of my highlights, for sure.
nice moment for me. I probably have a couple of tap-ins or a header or something but that was a nice goal.
Can you pick out a favourite game so far? I think our first league game in last season’s WSL was quite a good one. We drew to Chelsea. Maybe that one or a couple of those first games against top sides where we’ve drawn or just nicked it. They were really, really good because I think people had quite low expectations, just not knowing what we could deliver and to come out and dominate spells of the game against the best teams in the league, I’d maybe say those were stand-out games.
How do you think the squad, the club and yourself have developed since your debut? Leaps and bounds. We’re training at Carrington now alongside the men’s team and benefiting from the best facilities, and we feel a bit more united within the club... excuse the pun! I think that feels really special as a female footballer playing for Man United, to be training there and working there every day. There are lots of little things like that in terms of the infrastructure, the coaching staff, things like that which you notice that are getting better all the time. I think the club is in a great place, but we’ll continue to push and get better all the time.
Can you pick out a favourite goal? There’s not that many to choose from! But I quite like my lob against Leicester in the Conti Cup. That was quite a

HAYLEY LADD
Our no.12 says the whole squad is looking forward to a big week ahead in the league and cup Hayley believes her decision-making on the ball has improved since she joined the club
“I’M STARTING TO DO MY COACHING BADGES... I’VE ALWAYS ENJOYED THE ACADEMIC SIDE OF STUFF AND BEING A FOOTBALLER, POTENTIALLY YOU MIGHT NEED IT” It’s a hard one to look into the future. I think part of Marc’s attitude, or strategy, is to take each game as it comes – literally. I think that’s a really nice focus for us as a team. We don’t get side-tracked by looking at the league table or anything like that; just literally staying focused on the next game, on the next game and so on. With that strategy, if we really want to get where we want to be, we’ll end up there and be worthy of being there. How do you feel your play has changed over the last couple of seasons? Have there been one or two things you’ve worked on specifically? I think something that’s been key throughout my whole time at United has been all the coaches’ attitude towards individual development of players. There’s always someone to watch clips with, always a coach to do an extra session on passing or whatever. So I feel from the get-go I’ve had opportunities to develop as a player which is so pleasing for me. I think my passing and my decision-making on the ball have improved, or I’d like to think they have. It’s obviously something I’ll keep trying to improve and keep working on as well.
As for the future, you’ve got quite a few qualifications already, is that correct? Do you have your sights set on coaching or another role within the sport? Well, I did an undergraduate degree at Loughborough University which was in human biology, so sort of different, but definitely with sports science links as well. And I’m starting to do my coaching badges so I’m looking into the coaching route as well. I’m focusing on my time here at United and my playing at the moment and hopefully, we’ll see after what happens. I’ve always enjoyed the academic side of stuff and being a footballer, you know that potentially you might need it, you need a fallback option just in case anything happens. I do really like the coaching route and it’s something I am exploring and I’ve got my degree as well as a back-up if need be. As for the next few weeks, you’ve said it’s one game at a time, but when the games come so quickly you must bear in mind all three upcoming games: Birmingham, Arsenal, Spurs. After the weeks off for Christmas, you must be working hard to be ready for this huge week. Yeah, definitely. We’ve always got to keep an eye on the next couple of weeks, just to prepare ourselves. We’ve got to trust in our coaching staff that we’ll be ready for those games. We’ve got a great squad and good depth as well. There are players that can certainly come into the fold and be really pivotal for us as well. What do you think we have to do well to win this game? I think there are always things that we can control. Our quality on the ball is a strength of ours as a team, so that’s something we always like to focus on. But I think matching Birmingham’s physicality will be a big one. They’ve got strength in certain areas of the pitch and they try to crowd out certain areas, but we’ll look to be wary of that and just look to exploit them where we can. ⬤

CAPTAIN’S COLUMN
KATIE ZELEM After the squad’s extended break from the pitch, the skipper says everyone is eager to get going – and hopefully lay down a marker for a successful 2022... It’s great to be back and – belatedly – kick off the new year with you and I hope you all had a great festive period. Personally, Christmas was amazing. It was so nice to spend time with family and friends, especially given the last year or so. And, to answer the question everyone always gets asked about presents: my standout gift was a lovely pair of heels! We had a training programme set for us over the break, but it was super flexible – as long as you got everything done, you could give yourself a few days off. We had a gym programme and a couple of 5k runs to do. Christmas Day and Boxing Day were all about recovery and I also had a couple of days in London which was lovely – a change of scenery while we’re not able to get away as much at the moment. There’s so much to look forward to in 2022. We’re back at Old Trafford in March, with you fans there for the first time, and we’re really pushing for a top-three spot. And then there are the Euros in the summer, which a few of us will be hoping to be involved in, and England’s first game is at Old Trafford, which will make the Euros more special. Even though we’re halfway into January, I haven’t got around to setting my new year’s resolutions yet. Setting
goals and aims at the start of each year is definitely something I like to do, and given this year has the potential to be a huge year, it’s on my agenda to do very soon. Though it’s great to look forward and set Zel works on her goalkeeping back at targets for the future, Carrington last week! today is all about Birmingham City. All credit to them for their result against Arsenal last weekend – they were unbelievable against a brilliant team and really got the result they deserved. Birmingham are an incredibly hard-working team, organised and those finishes were great. You really can’t underestimate anyone in this league, and we certainly won’t be today. Enjoy the game.

MU FOUNDATION
YEAR IN THE LIFE Here we look back at some of the many standout events from an eventful 12 months for Manchester United’s associated charity...
Manchester United Foundation prides itself on uniting all elements of the club in support of the local, and global, community. Fans, staff and players alike give their time generously in aid of the Foundation’s causes and 2021 was no exception. Following the Santa’s Red Helpers appeal during Christmas 2020, when 80,000 meals were donated to those in need, the Foundation and FareShare Greater Manchester once again joined forces in the new year to support families through the Foundation’s partner school network. For eight weeks leading up to Easter, 383,000 food items were diverted by FareShare and distributed by Foundation and club staff to 40 schools across Greater Manchester. United legend Wes Brown [inset], who was on hand to support the campaign, said: “This shows Manchester United Foundation and FareShare’s commitment to supporting local families during what’s been a stressful time for a lot of people, so if this delivery helps to take one thing off their mind then it helps out enormously.”
Ella was one of many United Women players to proudly support the Foundation in 2021
Further player support came from Reds skipper Katie Zelem, who was joined by men’s team captain Harry Maguire to help promote an initiative which provided 5,000 wellbeing books and balls to children as part of the Foundation’s work in the mental
health space. “The ‘book and ball’ [inset] is a great way for children to learn ways in which they can improve their mental wellbeing which is so important during this time,” Katie said. “I hope it really benefits many in the community.” Also providing support to our community projects were Ella Toone and Alessia Russo who, in November, visited Foundation ⊲

Stretford High students get into the spirit during an autumn training session with United players
partner school Stretford High to join in with a football session and field questions from the group. The visit was to generate excitement and promote interest in the women’s game ahead of the UEFA Women’s Euros this year. “It’s been great to visit the girls,” Ella said. “I was really impressed with the talent out there, which is why it’s important for us to get involved in sessions like these to show the girls what can be achieved if they continue to work hard.” There were also some incredible fundraising efforts from our loyal fans and staff, starting back in February when young United fan Samuel [inset] walked, ran and cycled the distance – 272 miles – between his home and Old Trafford. Then, in September, wellknown Red and United We Stand fanzine editor Andy Mitten cycled

from Land’s End to John O’Groats, covering almost 1,000 miles and raising over £15,000. This figure was matched by the club, with all proceeds going to help facilitate training and provide resources to thousands of young people so they can learn defibrillation, CPR and first-aid basics. There was more amazing work in the following month too, when eight runners – including Old Trafford staff – took on the Virgin Money London Marathon and collectively raised an incredible £18,000. And the year was to finish on yet another high during the second annual Santa’s Red Helpers Christmas appeal, which united fans, staff and players in helping to support the local community. Again proving the
unifying effect of the Foundation, players sent messages of support to young people in local hospitals and helped to pack presents [inset], which were delivered by staff. The Foundation again partnered with FareShare Greater Manchester, and in a joint donation with the club, pledged £100,000 to provide 400,000 meals . Fan groups including MUST (Manchester United Supporters’ Trust), The Red Army, MUWSC (Manchster United Women Supporters’ Club) and our global network of supporters’ clubs also embarked on their own donation and fundraising drives, highlighting a truly united effort. As ever, the Foundation’s valuable work will continue. If you would like to learn more, or perhaps even take up the fundraising baton yourself, then please visit mufoundation.org.

Few would have predicted the scoreline at St Andrew’s last Sunday, which has given the Blues a huge lift after a tough few months...
BIRMINGHAM CITY Not many gave Birmingham City a prayer when the WSL’s bottom club welcomed unbeaten league leaders Arsenal to St Andrew’s last weekend, but those behind the scenes at the Blues were always quietly confident of causing the eventual upset which has reignited their 2021/22 campaign. Birmingham’s 2-0 win, thanks to first-half goals from Libby Smith and Veatriki Sarri (above), may have been the club’s first home WSL triumph since October 2019 (some 805 days ago), but the victory was no fluke and reflected the renewed energy and tweaked tactical system which interim boss Darren Carter has introduced since replacing Scott Booth in the dugout in mid-November. “The players deserve all the plaudits – we asked them to be brave against an excellent Arsenal side,” said Carter at full-time. “I couldn’t be any prouder of them. To get the first win has been a long time coming.” Prior to that remarkable win, Birmingham had lost nine of their 10 WSL games this season – their sole point coming in a spirited 1-1 draw away to West Ham in October – but twice led Manchester City in Carter’s first game in charge before succumbing to a last-minute winner from former Blues forward Ellen White. Carter’s favoured back-three formation would seem to make better use of the multifunctional players at his
30
disposal, while also adding defensive solidity. Captain Louise Quinn, who has made more clearances than any other WSL player this season, now counts on Harriet Scott and Gemma Lawley either side of her, the latter deputising well for the injured Danish international Cecilie Sandvej against Arsenal, in what was the Blues’ first clean sheet in any competition this season. Further forward, Jamie Finn, who provided the cross for Sarri’s goal last weekend, and Rebecca Holloway offer thrust from wing-back, while Carter’s switch from a 3-5-2 formation in defeats to Manchester City and Leicester, to a 3-4-3 against Arsenal helped push Jade Pennock and Lucy Quinn into wide positions in support of centre-forward Smith. Sarri and Christie Murray, meanwhile, patrolled midfield areas impressively. In restoring a positive mentality at a club which has endured a couple of difficult seasons, Carter is now hoping to transfer the newfound belief into this weekend’s visit to Leigh Sports Village, after the Reds emerged 2-0 winners earlier in the reverse fixture at St Andrew’s earlier in the season. “Going forward, we’ve gone toe-to-toe with the best team in the league,” added Carter with a smile six days ago. “We’ve imposed ourselves, got into their final third and created chances.”
THE VISITORS
INTERIM MANAGER DARREN CARTER A born-and-bred Blue, Carter played more than 550 games for Birmingham, West Brom and Preston, among others, before retiring last year at Solihull Moors. The 38-year-old began his career in the dugout with third-tier West Brom Women in September but couldn’t resist the lure of the Blues when asked to replace Scott Booth on an interim basis in November. A basketball fan inspired by Chicago Bulls coach Phil Jackson’s ability to create a positive dressing-room dynamic, Carter’s upbeat philosophy has been vital to Birmingham’s recent uptick.
TEAM LEADER LOUISE QUINN Quinn’s reputation as a mobile centre-back and inspirational leader was such that the 91-time Ireland international was immediately named captain after her summer switch from Fiorentina. After eight years at Peamount United in Dublin, she joined Swedish side Eskilstuna United in 2013, before winning the WSL and League Cup in three seasons at Arsenal from 2017. The 31-year-old returned to England last summer after leading the Viola to fourth in the 2020/21 Women’s Serie A and has played every minute for the Blues this term.
ONE TO WATCH LIBBY SMITH Smith’s coolly taken opener in the defeat of Arsenal was just reward for the tireless work rate the 20-year-old has shown since establishing herself as Carter’s leading striker. Signed from hometown club Leicester last summer, having appeared 14 times as the Foxes won the Championship, she’s a former England U19s captain whose versatility and energy have impressed many at St Andrew’s. “The runs she makes in behind... she’s going to get in and get chances, it’s about showing that composure,” says Carter, who’ll be hoping last weekend is a sign of things to come.
